Ann Kirk Replacement Concept ~ Part Two It is September already and the Fall colors are just around the corner. Some of the best riding weather of the year is ahead as it usually is not very rainy and the temperatures are cooling down to comfortable. That also makes it more enjoyable to concentrate on training during rides. It can be fun to problem solve and using the Replacement Concept gives it the feel of a game instead of a chore. For those of you who missed the last article, let me briefly explain the use of the Replacement Concept. Basically, it is focusing on what you do want your horse to do instead of what you don't. It is attaching a particular exercise and response to a negative behavior so as to keep a positive attitude when riding. And it causes you to practice responses that are not repeated enough on an average trail ride. It is common for us to focus on the negative behavior and then get frustrated with the horse because he won't stop this behavior. But what if you decided to use that behavior as a signal to practice an exercise that you wanted better

anyway? This will totally change your attitude towards that 'unwanted' behavior and will give you a better trained horse by the end of your ride. The Replacement Concept can be used for all kinds of trail riding areas such as eating on the trail, jigging, buddy sour reactions, constantly trying to turn back, crossing obstacles....the list is endless. So let me give you more examples of using the Replacement Concept. Let's start with a horse that 'jigs' or trots on the trail when you don't want to trot. Most of the time, the solution is to hold back on the reins with constant pressure to slow the horse down but that “dumb” horse still trots even though he is trotting slower than he could walk. Mostly, this is due to you holding him back. When a horse walks, he nods his head; when he trots, he doesn't. So if you hold constant pressure on the reins, he cannot walk. If you let him out and only check him back to a walk before giving him slack again, he is still gaining ground every time he trots. But if you back him up and then give him slack, even if you have to do it every other stride for a while, he will figure out that if he walks, you let him go. And just think of how great your back-up will be in a very short time. Backing teaches your horse to soften and give you better speed control whenever you ask. Other exercises to replace trotting are working on diagonal work with his shoulders, picking up one rein to guide him into a circle and releasing as soon as he walks, teaching a

1-rein back-up and disengaging the hips. Be sure, if you are riding with others, that you have someone who will go just a little ways and then wait for you. If your horse finds himself getting farther behind when you back him, he will have a hard time learning due to the emotions from feeling abandoned. Another behavior to replace is eating on the trail. If you have a horse that thinks you are taking him out for lunch when you ride and grabs for food every chance he gets, he can be retrained in a couple short sessions. Disengaging the hip works great for the Replacement Concept approach. Start by taking your horse to a tempting location and give him some slack. Every time he reaches for a bite, pick up the rein and ask him to disengage his hip 1-3 times on that side. Release and give him some slack while you switch your hands for the other side. Just stay patient and relaxed while you let him figure out the connection between his attempts to eat and your request for him to move his hip. It won't take that long and you won't be able to convince him to reach for a bite. When he is good in an open spot, take him on the trails and practice it there. If the trail is too narrow to move the hip, backing also makes a good replacement exercise. After you have taught this, you need to be consistent and correct him on every bite. Soon, he will not eat while being ridden. But if you let him eat sometimes and don't want him to eat other times, it will be harder to stop. I make it a rule to never let my horse eat while I am riding or leading him. If I want to hand graze them, I use the head down cue to put his head down to eat.

There are lots of different areas to apply the Replacement Concept and get a better trained horse in the process. I find that I only use a handful of exercises but get great results. I use serpentines for calming a horse. I use backing and disengaging the hip for slowing them down. I use giving to the bit, to focus the horse on the trail ahead instead of looking to the side. But use your imagination and you can enjoy every ride just by using what the horse does to get him better trained and to take more responsibility for his speed and responses. Finding the Cause of Lameness

Lameness is by far the number one reason that horses are taken out of performance. Nothing is more frustrating to an owner than to have a highly trained competitive horse removed from performance. Returning these horses to performance has been my job for many years. Based on my experience, the number one most important thing we need to know to help return the horse to athletic performance is the cause of the lameness. Once we know what is causing the horse’s problem, decisions about treatment become easier, and treatment becomes much more effective. Finding the cause of the lameness is not always easy. The process can involve a lot of time, multiple examinations, diagnostic local anesthesia of the leg, and multiple different ways of “looking� at the horse’s leg including radiographs, ultrasound, and MRI. Diagnosis and treatment of lameness problems used to involve finding the area of soreness, taking radiographs, and if there was not a fracture, picking a location to inject anti-inflammatory drugs into the horse’s leg. When the radiographs gave us an answer, treatment was frequently

appropriate and effective. When radiographs did not give us the answer, treatment became a guessing game. Ultrasound improved our ability to diagnose soft tissue injuries in the horse’s leg, but it also has limitations. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has greatly improved our ability to find the cause of the problem in horses with performance limiting lameness. MRI is frequently needed to determine the cause of the horse’s problem. Knowing the cause leads to effective treatment which can result in a successful return to performance. I was fortunate to be involved with performing the first MRI on live horses at Washington State University in 1997. Since that time, I have been involved in more than 3000 MRI evaluations of lame horses. Fall Finals Can Mean Fizzling Equine Performance by Tiffanie Veltri

T

he Northwest’s season for equine competition seems to be winding down. For some of you seeing summer turn to fall means qualifying shows are turning to season finals. During this time in the competition calendar, I begin to see wear and tear and underlying injuries become setbacks to the horses’ and rider’s end of season finals. This time Tiffanie at 2012 NBCAAM in the competition season is when we really need our equine companions at their best, but now we start to see them at their weakest. As a Nationally Certified Equine Massage Therapist, my goal is to formulate a plan with the equine’s guardian during the beginning of the season for the best massage schedule to help the horse get to the end of the season at their finest. For those unfamiliar with equine massage, there are differences in the kind of massage an animal can have. The three main types are maintenance massage, performance (i.e. pre and post event) massage and rehabilitation massage. For competing athletes the massages may change depending on the time in the athlete’s season. For example,

the beginning of the season may call for and be considered a maintenance massage. Once the animal begins its rigors in training and competing, the massage turns into a performance massage. Once the season has concluded and the training and competing as slowed or stopped, the massage would turn back to a maintenance or rehabilitation massage depending on how the horse finishes the season. Having massage routinely done on a competitive equine athlete can be a key factor for addressing the fatigue in the horse’s muscle tissue that may lead to breakdown and could potentially make or break the season for them and their rider. The pre and post event massage can be a very useful tool to equine athletes because conditioning and training can place a high demand on the horse’s body, especially the cardiovascular and musculoskeletal system. Pre-event massage can help warm up the musculature system of the animal. This, in turn, helps to replenish the muscle with oxygenated and nutrient filled blood. Pre-event massage can also aid in relieving muscle tension and mental tension giving the athlete a calmer mind and body so that they do not expend energy that is needed for competition. Post-event massage is also important because it focuses on reducing the stress that may have occurred on both the mind and body. It can aid in flushing the waste products that can build up from rigorous muscle activity and therefore speed recovery time between active workouts and competitions. So, what does massage mean to an equine athlete? It can mean the competitive edge that is needed to not only perform at their best, but also make it to the fall season finals without the fizzling out effect. Massage practitioners that have been trained to work on performance equine athletes have to be very in-tune with the athlete’s competition demands and be able to detect the stress patterns and trigger points before they become an issue in the horse’s health. Equine massage should never take the place of veterinarian care. It may best suit an equine athlete to have their guardian work closely with both professionals for optimum equine health and performance. Like most human athletes, equine athletes are performing rigorous tasks and massage therapy is a highly beneficial tool to training and competing.

Perfect Pastures are Possible by Susan Allen

W

eed control is expensive, time consuming, critical for good livestock pastures and yet it often fails. The Noble Foundation, a nonprofit that assists farmers and ranchers, and conducts plant science research in addition to agricultural programs that enhance agricultural productivity, have posted an article by Eddie Funderburg Senior Consultant - Soils & Crops titled "The Top 7 Reasons Weed-Control Programs Fail". The first reason cited is spraying too early. Funderburg says not to merely spray the same time you did last year, but to spray the weeds at the proper time based on the stage of growth. It’s also important to know what weed you’re dealing with and match the herbicide that controls it. Remember that environmental conditions can wreak havoc on weed control. In a hot spell the weeds aren’t actively growing and won’t take up the herbicide; and wind drift often accounts for poor application. Using the cheapest herbicide is also a no no as often more expensive formulas are required for difficult weeds. Not calibrating the sprayer can be a big mistake. According to Funderburg, “ the majority of us don’t calibrate our sprayers.” This is a practice that should be done every season. Each year sprayers, their nozzles, screens, lines, and pumps should be inspected to insure the correct application volume. If you don’t know how to calibrate a sprayer, the Noble Foundation has instructions for calibrating both boom and boomless sprayers that are available for a nominal fee. Finally, the most critical of the seven, and it seems the most simple is failure to read the label. Not following instructions on herbicides not only impacts weed control it, violates federal law. If you follow the directions on the herbicide to the letter, the Noble Foundation says that is the best guarantee for weed free pastures. “There are many ways to conduct a weed control program that will work. Unfortunately, there are even more ways that will not work. Open Range evolved like a child. For years I wanted to produce a radio show that celebrates the components which make living out west unique. It's infancy began with an adventure/travel script, then a horse show, a rodeo report, pro-ag commentary and finally the American Rancher, all good ideas, programs and efforts. Yet, each failed to fully encompass my passion for the west, its lore and lifestyle. Unlike other regions, the Pacific Northwest is uniquely diverse. A fascinating cornucopia of people: urbanites in Portland and Seattle that flock to wine and ski country in droves separated by mere hours from buckaroos that crave solitude with cattle and horses under the hauntingly beautiful Steen's Mountains.

I fell in love with rodeo as a St. Paul rodeo princess traveling throughout the Northwest promoting the sport on my AQHA, Sammy Dee. Out of college my first "real" job was in PR with the Northern California Thoroughbread Association at Golden Gate and Bay Meadows racetracks. This led to a passion to rehabilitate OTB Thoroughbreds and a special place in my heart for those amazing athletes. I was also fortunate to spend a week with the BLM, learning to gentle wild mustangs as part of a project to promote more adoptions on the radio. Thus, I am a mixed bag when it comes to the equestrian disciplines. I team rope, with my familly on our horse farm in Walla Walla and love watching my son, Tommy, an accomplished horseman compete in tie down roping. I can be brought to tears by a clean round of Olympic show jumping or the Kentucky Derby. At least two days a week of the Open Range radio program are dedicated toward equine topics because horses, whether they be the wild Kigers in Eastern Oregon, Thoroughbred crosses at our University poll clubs (WSU and OSU) or a working ranch horse near Idaho Falls, are embedded deeply in our western culture and heritage. If the bald eagle symolizes a free nation, then the horse with its many disciplines; riding, roping, racing, running, working cows, jumping... stands alone as a vestige of the diversity and spirit of the West.
