The cold temperatures have finally made it to the Inland Northwest bringing with them promises of lots of plowing, snow forts, holidays and plenty of family. That’s what makes Thanksgiving and Christmas so rewarding; we have to work extra hard ensuring the safety of our animals, future crops, homesteads and roads.

We deserve a little merriment once all our chores are done! The late fall and winter are also a great time to start planning for the spring that will inevitably come out of hiding in a few months. It’s like silk. The Suri alpaca is the only alpaca in North America to have an association written and approved breed standard and Suri genetic herd improvement program. A pure Suri must come from two Suri parents.

SuperSuris is working hard to ensure the continuation of such a beautiful and irreplaceable breed.

Currently, their herd numbers about 120 alpacas, with this last summer introducing 20 new little babies into the world.

There are some who lump alpaca fiber and yarn in with wool, but it couldn’t be more different. Alpaca fiber is difficult to process, making it harder and sometimes more expensive to come by. There are only about 20 mini mills across the country that can process the fiber, and only a handful of those can actually process Suri fiber. Naturally hypoallergenic, alpaca products are a wonderful alternative to wool products that a lot of people have trouble wearing. They are also nonitchy, with the texture finer than cashmere and they don’t “pill”. Combine that with their anti-stain, water and bacteria resistant qualities, and it’s a wonder that more people don’t have their entire wardrobes made out of the stuff! It’s also twice as warm as wool, without causing you to overheat, so it’s perfect during the fall, winter and spring months.

Put Your Tool Shed To Bed

T

he growing season is finished, and our landscapes have been put to bed. Before we go inside and shut the door on the garden, letâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s give a thought to the tools that help us all season. From our favorite pair of pruners, to the trusty lawnmower, where would we be without our garden tools? Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s easy to forget that just like plants; these tools need some care and maintenance. With the garden needing less attention through the winter, this is a great time to give them an annual checkup.

Hand tools, like trowels and shears, donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t take much effort to maintain, but over time, soil and rust can build up and interfere with their function. Clean any build up off of your tools using a wire brush, if necessary. You may have to disassemble some of them to do a thorough job. A heavy duty cleaner will loosen up the dirt, but avoid products like bleach that will cause corrosion. After cleaning, a small application of lightweight oil will protect the metal, and keep parts moving freely.

You may have heard advice about storing tools in a bucket of sand mixed with oil. The idea is to protect the metal from corrosion. This may work, but then the problem becomes disposal.

Oily sand canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be added to the landscape; the oil would be harmful to plants, soil microbes and ground water. Oil recyclers wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t want oil with ten pounds of sand mixed into it.

Inspect cutting tools, like pruners for dull blades. Now is the time to sharpen them if needed. Sharper blades mean easier and cleaner cuts, which make for healthier plants.

Power equipment requires a few extra steps, but once done saves a lot of work.

To sharpen at home, use a hand file or a bench grinder. Match the angle of the cutting blade with your sharpening tool, and file just enough to hone the edge. If you have lots of blades to sharpen, consider buying an adjustable jig to hold the tool at the correct angle.

You may prefer to take them into a professional, who will already have the proper equipment and know-how for the job.

Power equipment requires a few extra steps, but once done, these save us a lot of work next spring. The fuel system is number one on the to-do list. Ethanol now mixed into gasoline is better for our environment, but it does not store well for more than 30 days. Over time, the ethanol will absorb water, which leads to rust on metallic parts. The mix of ethanol and water can also clog lines with a gummy residue.

To prevent clogging and wear inside the engine there are a number of options. Some sources sell “non-ethanol” premium gasoline. This costs more and may be hard to find depending on where you live. Many small engine repair experts recommend using this exclusively in power equipment, and say it pays for itself in reduced engine wear. If this isn’t an option all the time, consider at least using it at the end of the season. The non-ethanol mixes do have a longer life, but will still need treatment to last longer than 90 days.

This way it can be clean and ready to go as soon as warm weather hits. Many automotive stores will recycle the used oil, and in some areas, like Spokane, it can be taken to solid waste facilities.

If you haven’t checked the engine in more than a year, make sure they have clean air and fuel filters. With all the debris that typically flies past them, you’ll find these filters can get dirty qu ickly. While you’re at it, check the spark plug as well; if it’s black or oxidized, it’s time to replace it. Once you do, the engine should be easier to start and run more smoothly.

Taking good care of gardening equipment is really a Christmas gift for yourself. In the spring, you receive clean tools that are ready to use. Invest a little time in them now, and they will reward you with another season of service in the landscape. u

Putting Down Roots

W

e have had a glorious fall season this year. The trees slowly turned color and with little wind they held onto their glory for us to enjoy. If the snow and ground freezing weather holds off a bit, you still have time to plant dormant deciduous and conifer trees.

Many of the local nurseries still have good deals on trees as they clear their lots for winter. If you’ve already hung up your shovel for the year these methods will work anytime When planting trees and large shrubs, preparing the hole properly is the key to growing a healthy plant. Current arboriculture practices say dig a dish-shaped hole that is a little deeper than the depth of the rootball and two to three times the diameter of the roots when they are spread out. Set aside the soil from the hole. Do not add any soil amendments to the original soil as research has shown that trees and shrubs do better in native soil. If the soil in the hole is too good, the roots tend to stay where the good stuff is and not spread out enough.

When planting bareroot, potted or balled and burlapped trees, you must locate the point on the trunk where it flares out to form the roots and plant the tree no deeper than this point. Planting them with the root flare buried too deeply reduces the tree’s lifespan and ability to thrive. This may mean digging down into a rootball of a potted or B and B (balled and burlapped) tree to find it. Wholesale growers tend to bury this point too deeply so the trees are easier to handle.

If you are planting a bareroot plant, trim off any broken or extra long

roots before you set it in the hole. Make a small mound of dirt in the center of the hole and spread the roots over it. If the roots on potted trees are pot bound, rough up the surface of the rootball to loosen the roots. If you don’t, the roots will continue to grow in a circle and not expand away from the plant.

Gently backfill the hole with the native soil you set aside so the root flare is at the soil surface. As you fill, have a hose running in the hole to move the dirt into air pockets and thoroughly soak the roots. Don’t tamp the soggy soil; let it settle and drain. Then add more to fill low spots. Build a soil moat around the planting hole so that you can flood irrigate the tree. Plan on watering it regularly for the first couple of years. Mulch the area but don’t put mulch around the trunk. This will help hold in moisture. If you live in a very windy spot, stake the tree using broad soft bands to hold the trunk. Old water hose with rope run through the hose works well for this. Remove the stakes within a year.

Through the winter, take care to gently knock heavy wet snow off the branches to prevent damage. In the spring, fertilize the tree with a 10-10-10 fertilizer. Trim back any branches that may have been damaged over the winter. The tree will probably not grow a lot the first year as it is building root mass.

This may seem like a lot of work but in the long run, you will have a healthy tree for many years to come. u

Winter Freezes Out Chores Jack Frost Nipping At Your Chores

W

inter has a natural calming effect on country living. The list of chores to be done goes down dramatically in the winter without the garden, weeding, mowing, watering, building fence and all the other stuff one does when the sun comes up at 4am and goes down at 9pm. The trade-off is a different set of chores like feeding the critters, making sure the water troughs are free of ice and plowing the roads. And with less light, there is less time to accomplish what needs to be done. But when that first heavy snow of the season sets in, one can’t help but appreciate how quiet and beautiful the world has become. A beautiful blanket of snow covering the trees never fails to inspire the photographer in all of us, taking photos like we had never seen the stuff before. I freely admit to doing exactly that, thinking this one photo is the one that we frame. And yet the first blush of white quickly fades as the snow keeps falling and I realize I need to start shoveling.

The science behind proper shoveling and plowing starts with proper planning before the house and barn are even built. It looks so nice to have the driveway lined with trees and rocks until 4’ of snow has fallen and there is no place to put all the snow. As the win-

ter wears on, the driveway gets narrower and narrower and the walkways become tiny footpaths through nearly vertical banks of snow reaching over my head. One winter about 8 years ago, we were completely snowed in with a couple of major drifts across the driveway and the county road completely impassable. Weather like that is not uncommon

in this region and just as we prepare for fire season, we also need to prepare for that major snow storm that could keep us from getting out. Plenty of food on hand, a back-up generator to keep the power on, and lots of books, games and videos for the grandkids are absolute necessities. I loved the down time, catching up on some reading and getting a couple of small fix-it projects done that I can never seem to get to in the summer. The kids however, had a tougher time of it until we managed to hitch one of the big dogs to the plastic toboggan and had him pull them around for the better part of the day. The dog and kids were all exhausted and happy by the end of the day and all was quiet that night.

Living out in the country has its challenges but by my way of reckoning, they pale in comparison to living in the city. Out here I have clean air, lots of space, plenty to keep me busy and more than anything else, peace and quiet. I can’t hear or see my neighbors unless I want to. Winter is coming and I will be prepared for life to slow down just a little. I just have to change my venue for settin’ out from the back deck to looking out the window…

Balsam Fir- ¾” to 1 ½” short, flat, long lasting needles that are rounded at the tip; nice, dark green color with silvery cast and fragrant. These needles are 3/4 - 1 ½ in. in length and last a very long time. This is the traditional Christmas tree that most Americans grew up with. This tree has a dark-green appearance and retains its pleasing fragrance throughout the Christmas season.

Douglas Fir- good fragrance; holds blue to dark green; 1” to 1 ½” needles; needles have one of the best aromas among Christmas trees when crushed. The Douglas fir needles radiate in all directions from the branch. When crushed, these needles have a sweet fragrance.

Grand Fir- shiny, dark green needles about 1” – 1 ½” long; the needles when crushed, give off a citrusy smell.

Spruce Blue Spruce- dark green to powdery blue; very stiff needles, žâ&#x20AC;? to 1 ½â&#x20AC;? long; good form; will drop needles in a warm room; symmetrical; but is best among species for needle retention; branches Colorado Blue Spruce are stiff and will support many heavy decorations.

Colorado Blue Spruce- sharp needles are 1 1 ½ in. in length. This species is bluish-gray in color and has a bad odor when needles are crushed. This Christmas tree has good symmetrical form and has attractive blue foliage.

Another Success for Small Farms

mall farm producers from eastern Washington, northern Idaho, central Oregon and western Montana met October 19th in Spokane to share farming experiences and ideas at the third annual Inland Northwest Small Farm Conference Held at Spokane Falls Community College, the conference was organized by the Spokane Conservation District and the WSU Spokane County Extension Small Farm Program to help beginning and experienced landowners learn about new trends in land management, crop and animal production and farm business management. Nearly 100 attendees listened to a total of 15 workshops including presentations on agri-tourism, nuisance wildlife management, business planning, managing well and septic systems, permaculture, finding farmland, soil management, irrigation efficiency and integrating animals with farm operations to name a few. The conference theme for this year was “Farming with Purpose and Prosperity”.

Key sponsors for this year’s conference included The Exchange, the Community Building Foundation, Upper Columbia RC&D, St. John Hardware and Implement, Charlie’s Produce and Northwest Farm

Credit Services.

They helped the conference organizers secure space and provided scholarships for producers. A number of local agricultural-based businesses and organizations also set up information tables so that attendees could learn about their products and services.

“Learning and networking opportunities like the Inland Northwest Small Farm Conference are vital to letting small producers know about new trends in production, marketing and resource management,” says Pat Munts, small farm program coordinator and conference organizer. “It lets them visit with their peers and share ideas as well as expand their skills.”

The Spokane Conservation District held its annual meeting to review the many conservation projects completed by the District in 2012-13 to improve water quality, fish passage, soil management and wildfire protection planning in Spokane County.

The conference was also the initial meeting of producers interested in forming a producersâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; cooperative in Northeast Washington.

The purpose of the cooperative would be to provide its members with a way to aggregate their production to reach bigger markets, marketing and business planning assistance and access to liability insurance. More and more wholesale and institutional buyers are requiring the small producers they deal with to carry a million dollars or more of liability insurance before they can buy from them.

Inland Northwest Conservation Resource Guide

T

he Spokane Conservation District has compiled a list of agencies and organizations in the region that can provide information and technical assistance on a wide variety of environmental and natural resource issues, especially as they relate to living in the country. This directory is just a partial list of resources that could be available to you. There are virtually unlimited information resources that can be found on websites around the world. The ones listed here however, are local governmental entities that can provide not only information on

natural resource and environmental issues, but some can also provide on-site technical assistance. From production agriculture to nuisance wildlife and everything in between, this resource guide will help you find the information or assistance you need. Ingredients: • 1-1/2 cups cubed whole wheat bread • 3-3/4 cups cubed white bread • 1 lb. ground turkey sausage • 1 cup chopped onion • 3/4 cup chopped celery • 2-1/2 tsp dried sage • 1-1/2 tsp dried rosemary • 1/2 tsp dried thyme • 1 Golden Delicious apple, cored and chopped • 3/4 cup dried cranberries • 1/3 cup minced fresh parsley • 3/4 cup turkey stock • 4 Tbsp melted, unsalted butter

Directions 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Spread the white and whole wheat bread cubes in a single layer on a large baking sheet. Bake for 5-7 minutes or until evenly toasted. Transfer toasted bread cubes to a large bowl.

2. In a large skillet, cook the sausage and onions over medium heat, stirring and breaking up the lumps until evenly browned. Add the celery, sage, rosemary, and thyme; cook, stirring, for 2 minutes to blend flavors.

3. Pour sausage mixture over bread in a bowl. Mix in chopped apples, dried cranberries and parsley. Drizzle with turkey stock and melted butter, and mix lightly. Spoon into turkey to loosely fill or set out to serve on its own!

Homemade Caramels One of my favorite things to make in the fall and winter is homemade caramels. I make a variety of flavors and then have fun wrapping them up and giving them as gifts during the snowy months. You can also drop one in your hot cocoa for an ultra-rich after sledding treat!

Ingredients • 2 cups white sugar (I like to use caster or baker’s sugar) • 1 cup packed brown sugar • 1 cup corn syrup • 1 cup evaporated milk • 1 pint heavy whipping cream • 1 cup butter • 1-1/2 tsp vanilla extract Directions 1. Grease a 12x15 inch pan.

2. In a medium-size pot, combine sugar, brown sugar, corn syrup, evaporated milk, whipping cream and butter. Monitor the heat of the mixture with a candy thermometer while stirring. When the thermometer reaches 250 degrees F remove the pot from the heat.

3. Stir in the vanilla. Transfer mixture to the prepared pan and let the mixture cool completely. When cooled, cut the caramel into small squares and wrap them in wax paper for storage.

Note: My personal favorite is to dip them in melted semi-sweet chocolate and then top them with sea salt!
