Welcome

to the 2nd Annual Spokane Speed and custom Show! By attending and supporting this event, you’re part of a life-long adventure for show creator Brian Anderson.

Brian says, “I grew up around cars and car shows. my parents, Glenn and Jeannie, were very active in the show scene since before I was born and I just grew up in it. I judged my first indoor custom car show in 1986 and still judge some of the biggest indoor shows in North America. I’ve helped decide the most prestigious awards in the country like the Don Ridler memorial Award at Detroit Autorama and the America’s most Beautiful Roadster award at the Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, california. Now that I’m organizing my second Spokane Speed and custom Show, I’ve come to realize I’ve been training for this my entire life!”

“my family and friends have all been huge supporters of the show and helped make it a reality. It may have been my idea and a lot of the work falls on my shoulders, but without the support from friends, family, the local car community, and the sponsors, none of this could have been possible. I need to give special thanks to my parents for instilling in me a love of cars at an early age, and my kids, Taylor, Hannah, and logan for their endless excitement and support of the show. my girlfriend Theresa has my deepest gratitude. She has encouraged and supported the idea of this car show and has helped in ways she may never fully understand. Her words “If anybody can do it, I know it’s you!” give me inspiration to improve the Spokane Speed and custom Show each year!” “I am humbled, honored, and thankful to the volunteers and to you, the attendees, for making this “The New Spring Tradition” for Spokane.

2015 America’s Most Beautiful Roadster. Bobby Alloway has a history of making history. In fact, this is his second top win at the Grand National Roadster Show. And while this ride’s beauty is more than skin deep, the blacker-than-midnight finish and sizzling flames exemplify his dedication to perfection. That’s why when it’s time to spray another flawless finish at Alloway’s Hot Rod Shop, they use the paint with a reputation equal to the name above the door. The DELTRON® System. Maybellene

Tad & Sue Leach of Coeur d’Alene are the proud owners of this 1958 Lincoln Continental MKIII, built by Kindig-it Design in Salt Lake City, UT. Lincoln produced only 3,048 of these 229 inch nose-to-tail monsters, making them the longest production convertibles made other than the ultra-rare 1934-37 Cadillac V16s. Despite the low production of this model, extensive modifications have been performed like the removal of all trim, flush door handles, bumpers tucked and smoothed, and a custom built cowl panel backing up the stretched hood with custom clear hood bubble. You may

also notice the front fender scallop having been elongated and replicated at the rear of the car to eliminate the fender skirts while showcasing the one-off EVOD Industries 22'' wheels and whitewall Pirelli tires.

GM 4L80E transmission handles all that power and a Borla exhaust expels the spent fuel. The rest of the Art Morrison chassis features AccuAir suspension, a Strange Engineering Ford 9'' rear end and Wilwood brakes.

A look under that clear hood bubble gives a glimpse of the behemoth lurking beneath. You’ll be forgiven for not recognizing the Ryan Falconer Racing Engines aluminum 600CI V-12. Not many Falconer engines are in circulation, and this is the only V-12 that’s been supercharged. 940hp and 1,040 ft/lb torque are created by the MoTeC fuel injection and dual Magnuson TVS/1900 superchargers. A

So while that engine and the body mods are show-stoppers in their own right, when you combine that gorgeous AzkoNobel “Teal Later” blue paint with the Bentley “Beer Foam” interior crafted by JS Custom Interiors (Salt Lake City, UT) you’re confronted with a custom car that has it all. Horsepower, looks, and a comfortable ride; a winning combination.

Mulholland Speedster

The Mulholland Speedster is the culmination of an eight year journey initiated by Bruce Wanta of Bellevue, WA. Bruce commissioned Troy Ladd at Hollywood Hot Rods and Erick Black of eBlack Design to create an America’s Most Beautiful Roadster contender after seeing Troy’s “Black Widow” AMBR contending pickup at the 2009 Grand National Roadster Show in Pomona, CA. What they ended up with was not just a contender, but the 2017 AMBR winner! Starting with a Packard grill, a rusty 1936 1401 Packard, and a pile of virgin steel; HHR hand-built this tribute to the art deco cars of the 1930’s. The Mulholland Speedster is a masterclass in custom touches like hood vents and a grill that open and close based on engine temperature or driver control, crystal hood emblems, a DuVall-style windshield, and handcrafted grille emblem. A completely custom aluminum hardtop retracts beneath the decklid

with the push of a button. It’s truly a work of art. Troy designed the chassis with figure 8 framerails, twin I-beam front axles and an independent rear based around a Winters quick-change center section. The suspension is quarter elliptical springs front and rear with hidden adjustable suspension controlled via smartphone. The engine is a 1941 Lincoln flathead V-12 with Hogan aluminum heads and a vintage Latham supercharger fed by two mirrored Winfield carburetors. A BorgWarner T5 transmission transfers the power and HHR fabricated sweeping headers and in-pipe mufflers. “Mulholland Merlot” was the color created with PPG paint, sprayed by Mick’s Paint and set against the deep tan leather interior by Elegance Auto Interiors and engine-turned gauge panel makes a stunning, award-winning combination.

Judging a Show Car You’re at the Spokane Speed and Custom Show with some absolutely gorgeous vehicles. Some stand out more than others for one reason or another, and some you’re drawn towards based on your own bias. But if you were to JUDGE these cars, trucks, bikes, or boats, what should you really be looking at? Every part of a show vehicle should be clean. Paint should be shiny (if it’s designed to be), chrome should gleam, and glass should be squeaky and clear. Pay attention to doorsills, air vents, under floor mats, the engine bay, and suspension components. Top to bottom, front to back, it should be CLEAN. What is the quality of the exterior? Are the body panels aligned? Is the paint lustrous and deep, or merely shiny? Is there any orange peel to the paint, or drips, runs, overspray, or chips? Are there dents? Is the body altered, and if so, is it well done? Are the bumpers crooked or the doors sagging?

Once you get to the interior, examine the condition of the upholstery looking for dirt in the crevices, stains, or rips. Do the carpets look clean and new, or is there wear? Do the screws in the door sills

have dirt embedded in them? Is the weatherstripping torn or dry rotted? If aftermar- Heath Harmon Photo ket equipment like gauges or seats have been added, have they been installed carefully and professionally, or do they look like they’ve just been bolted in with no consideration for “flow”? In addition, if a modern stereo has been included, does the installation detract from the interior or is it integrated in a way that it is unobtrusive?

Anthony Anderson Photo

When evaluating the chassis and engine compartment, this too should be CLEAN. Are there any oil leaks or greasy parts? Is the wiring hidden or at least tidy? Have the fluid or vacuum lines been routed out of the way? Did the builder take the time to align bolt heads or rivets? Does everything look like it was done properly and safely? Take a good look at the tires and wheels. They should be clean and free from chips or scuffs. Brake dust should Tim Stromberger P.O. Box 640 Davenport, WA 99122 (509) 926-1429

be nonexistent. Are the calipers or drums painted? Have additional features been added like sway bars or camber plates, and have they been installed correctly? Lastly, we come to the overall concept of the vehicle. This is subjective, but really it comes down to how well the car works as a whole. If the engine has been fully built and customized, the suspension should show the same level of attention. And if the paint is over the top, the interior should be up to the same standard. Look to see if the vehicle is built correctly and nothing has been neglected. Judging a show vehicle comes with some basic rules, the golden rule being don’t touch them. If you need to see inside a closed portion of the vehicle, politely ask the owner. Don’t allow your clothing or anything else touch them either. And no matter the condition of the vehicle, respect the work the owner put into their vehicle and don’t eat, drink, or smoke near them. A judge should know the vehicle they’re judging if originality is important, like in a concours type event. This is less important in modified classes, but you need to be consistent. Don’t let your bias affect your judgement, and be prepared to defend your evaluation.
