Leffel, Otis & Warwick, P.S.

The 3 day Pacific Northwest Farm Forum will be held in conjunction with the Spokane Ag Expo, February 6-8, 2018 inside the Spokane Convention Center Complex. Keeping with tradition, there will be over 30 seminars and pesticide recertification courses throughout the event. Seminar topics range from Trump’s Tax Reform to Common Sense Succession Planning and even to Crop Nutrition. The wide variety of seminars and classes can be of use to small acreage farms and large scale operations. Dr. Art Douglas Tuesday’s opening session will welcome back Dr. Art Doug- 2018 Weather Forecast las, from 9am-11am on February 6. He will be presenting Tuesday, 2/6 • 9am his “2018 Forecast for Weather Conditions in the Northwest & The Impact of Climate Change.” Dr. Art Douglas is a Professor Emeritus, in the Atmospheric Science Department from Creighton University, and Long-Range Weather Consultant to the Mexican Government. On Wednesday, February 7 from 9am-10:30am Mike Krueger, President of the Money Farm, will be presenting his “Agriculture Economic Forecast.” The Money Farm has been a marketing advisory firm for over 30 years and they work with individMike Krueger Agriculture ual farmers, elevators and others associated with agriculture. Economic Forecast To conclude the 2018 Ag Expo and Pacific Northwest Farm Wednesday, 2/7 • 9am Forum will be keynote speaker Amberley Snyder. Beginning at 10am on Thursday, February 8, Amberley Snyder will be in the Centennial Ballroom for the FFA Main Session. Amberley’s story is truly one of determination and grit. In 2010 Amberley was involved in a car accident. She had looked down to check her map and had crossed the center lane. To avoid a collision with a metal beam Amberley overcorrected and her truck slid off the road and she was flung from her vehicle. Her back was broken and doctors confirmed that she would never be able to regain the use or feeling below her waist. Amberley set a goal to ride her horse again and after 18 months of rehab and hard work she was able to do just that. Since her accident she has not only competed in rodeo events she has used her story to inspire others. Amberley’s key note address is not to be missed! Amberley Snyder Hear all of the phenomenal speakers at this year’s Pacific FFA Main Session Northwest Farm Forum. Plan to arrive early as these seminars Thursday, 2/8 • 10am have filled up quickly in the past.

Homemade Hummus with Truly Unique Taste Hummus provides a delicious and healthy alternative to less nutritional dips. Versatile and available in various flavors, hummus can be whipped up at home for those who prefer to make their own dips. The following recipe for “Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread” from James Campbell Caruso’s “España: Explore the Flavors of Spain” (Gibbs Smith) includes some Moroccan flavors that give this easy-toprepare recipe a truly unique taste.

• 2 teaspoons chile flakes • 2 teaspoons Moroccan Spice Blend (see below) • Coarse salt and freshly ground black pepper • 1 batch Yogurt Flatbread (see below) In a medium saucepan, combine the carrots with 2 quarts water and 2 teaspoons salt. Bring the mixture to a boil then reduce the heat and simmer for 8 to 10 minutes, until the carrots are tender. Remove the pan from the heat and allow the carrots to drain and cool in a colander. Combine carrots and remaining ingredients, except for Yogurt Flatbread, in the work bowl of a food processor and puree until smooth. Season to taste with salt and pepper and garnish with the remaining cilantro. Serve with fresh, hot Yogurt Flatbread.

Moroccan Spice Blend Makes about 2 tablespoons • 1 teaspoon ground cumin • 1 teaspoon ground turmeric • 1 teaspoon saffron threads • 1 teaspoon ground coriander • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1 teaspoon ground smoked paprika • 1 teaspoon finely grated lemon peel In a small resealable glass or plastic container, combine all of the ingredients.

Yogurt Flatbread

Garbanzo-Carrot Hummus with Grilled Yogurt Flatbread Makes 2 cups • 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped • Salt • 1 cup cooked garbanzo beans, drained • 4 teaspoons chopped cilantro plus 1 teaspoon for garnish • 2 tablespoons chopped red onion • 2-1⁄2 teaspoons ground cumin • 1-1⁄2 teaspoons ground coriander seeds • 2 tablespoons lemon juice • 4 teaspoons olive oil

Serves 4 • 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1⁄4 teaspoon baking powder • 1 teaspoon coarse salt • 2-1⁄2 cups plain yogurt • Olive oil Sift the flour, baking powder and salt into the work bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the dough hook. Add the yogurt and mix on low speed for 2 minutes. Cover the work bowl and allow the dough to rest at room temperature for 30 minutes. Preheat a gas or charcoal grill to medium. Scrape the dough from the work bowl and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Roll the dough into a long log and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and use a rolling pin or tortilla press to flatten it into a 1⁄4-inch-thick tortilla shape. Brush each “tortilla” lightly with olive oil. Grill each for about 40 seconds then turn and cook another 40 seconds.

Women in Agriculture are Challenging Stereotypes (BPT) - About a third of the nation’s farmers are women, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. And most of these women are working family farms, since 99 percent of all American farms are family-owned and operated. Just under 1 million women farmers contribute $12.9 billion to the nation’s economy and are responsible for farming more than 301 million acres. More women are seeking careers in agriculture, and they’re breaking stereotypes about what their roles can be. Many women in the agriculture industry are farmers who grow crops and raise animals, while others are helping advance agriculture by fulfilling non-traditional roles: Seed sales representative Megan Moll grew up working on her family’s farm in central Michigan. Today, as a sales representative for Syngenta, she supports a network of independent seed advisers who sell the company’s corn hybrids and soybean varieties. She started with the company as an intern. “If you want to go after it, go after it,” Moll advises women who may be considering a career in agriculture, “Don’t let anything stop you.” Grape growers and winemakers

ated from Grand View University with a bachelor’s degree in graphic design, photography and journalism, and immediately went to work in agriculture for a crop insurance company. Inspired to draw attention to the roles of women in agriculture, she founded FarmHer, an online social community for women farmers. She now hosts the award-winning television show “FarmHer on RFD-TV.” “I think showing women who are successfully farming or ranching plants a seed in the younger generation,” Guyler-Alaniz says. “Younger girls who are interested in getting into agriculture or carrying on a family tradition can see for themselves that they can do it.” Agrobacterium researcher

Chilton, Ph.D., had the curiosity and drive to bring about major change. When one of her students turned in a paper suggesting bacteria that caused a common plant disease could actually transfer a portion of its DNA to the afflicted plant, Chilton thought his theory was wrong. In the spirit of the scientific method, she tested it and instead found her student’s theory to be true. Her research laid the groundwork for transforming how scientists conduct plant genetic research. Her work in plant biotechnology has significantly affected the global agriculture industry. “I give young people today the same advice I’ve given throughout my career,” Chilton says. “Pursue what you love and fascinates you, and the rest will follow.”

At a time when few women went to college, let alone pursued a higher degree in a scientific field, Mary-Dell

In 1999, Brenda Wolgamott and her husband, Duane, entered the wine-growing business; and in 2002, they created their own label - Marin’s Vineyard - named for their daughter, Marin Wolgamott. At age 14, Marin began delving into the science of winemaking, learning how to test grapes for sugar and pH levels in a lab, so she could provide the service to neighbors who would otherwise have to send their grapes to far-off labs for testing. Today, she is the winemaker for the vineyard. Marin’s experience and career path demonstrate “there are different avenues to get in,” she says. “Whether you want to do chemistry or love to get your hands dirty in the cellar, everyone’s job in the winery is always appreciated.” TV host and photographer Born and raised in rural Iowa, Marj Guyler-Alaniz gradu-

High-Tech Farming for Affordable, Sustainable Food Agriculture and technology both drive Washington’s economy. Agriculture contributes more than $51 billion to the state’s economy. Now, advances in technology help farmers improve our state’s food production systems, so high-tech farming means more people have access to affordable food and farming has less impact on our environment. Farming today looks far different than it did 50 years ago, or even 10 years ago. Ride along in a tractor on a typical Washington wheat farm and you’ll find yourself surrounded by technology, with three or four computer screens providing field data, satellite imagery and GPS guidance. Coupled with advanced sensors and applicators and steering automation, these technologies converge to help farmers manage their fields with precision so they can grow more food, more affordably, with less impact on our environment. AgTech’s Impact Depending on the crop, farms can span hundreds, sometimes thousands, of acres with variable terrain and growing conditions. New technological advancements help farmers grow crops in the most efficient and sustainable

way possible, accounting precisely for variations in soil type, soil nutrients, sun exposure, terrain and water. This allows them to ensure they’re applying what we refer to as inputs, including water, fertilizers and pest and weed control, only where crops need it and only in the quantities necessary to produce the best crops possible. This reduces chemicals added to our environment and conserves water. By controlling inputs, farmers can reduce costs associated with bringing foods from the field to the table. Reduced production costs mean less expense for consumers in the marketplace. Site-specific data also allows farmers to select plants that will thrive under specific conditions, and to respond appropriately to plants in distress. This increases productivity and allows farmers to produce more food per acre. Technology in Action GPS Yield and Soil Monitors for Field Mapping Using sensors and sampling in conjunction with GPS, farmers can create precise field maps, permitting site-specific management. It tells them exactly how well crops grow at specific sites and where they need to look closer to address problems, such as too much or too little water or diminished soil fertility. According to Dana Herron, a wheat farmer in Connell, WA, these technologies provide data a farmer just can’t acquire from hours walking and evaluating a fields. In fact, according to a study from the USDA Economic Research Service, GPS soil and yield mapping can reduce labor costs by 35%. GPS Autosteering and Variable-Rate Input Application Technologies (VRT) GPS auto-steer technologies are used in more than 50 percent of farmed acres, permitting such precision that farmers can ensure application of fertilizer, pest and weed control and seeding to within an inch of overlap. Based on field mapping, on-board computers can be precisely controlled so fertilizer and pest and weed control is applied only where it’s needed. This reduces the chemicals applied to crops and put into the environment and reduces planting costs. “It also

Mobile Applications on tablets as well as smart phone apps have become ubiquitous in daily life. Now they help farmers make smart decisions to conserve resources means we use less fuel and we have a smaller carbon footprint,” says Herron. According to the USDA Economic Research Service, VRT can reduce labor costs by 28 percent. A study from Purdue University predicts the use of VRT will climb to 64 percent by 2018. Mobile Applications Smart phone apps have become ubiquitous in daily life. Now they help farmers make smart decisions to conserve resources. “The goal is water conservation. We want more bang for the water we do use. We want more crop per drop,” says Troy Peterson, of WSU’s Center for Precision and Automated Agricultural Systems. He developed one application that allows farmers in Washington and 10 other states to precisely manage how much and when they water crops. “It keeps more water in our streams and keeps our water clean,” he says. Other apps help manage harvest, track productivity, and apply data from drones to evaluate the health of crops. Drones and Aerial Imagery Drones and other unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) entered the field several years ago, but their value to farm-

ing is still being developed. Aerial imagery provides data and insight that could never be acquired by walking the field. Using multispectral and thermal imaging, UAVs can identify different types of stress in crops at specific locations, allowing farmers to respond precisely where and how it’s needed. According to Cody Hodge of Washington Tractor, “this technology gives farmers a lot of data and saves a lot of money.” Drones can be used at a fraction of the price as hiring a plane to do the same job. “It can be used more frequently so you can catch problems throughout the growing season,” Hodge adds. Drones can also be used to help dry off cherry crops and to scare away birds that damage crops. The agriculture drone industry is expected to grow more than 28% by 2021, according to a recent study from Zion Market Research. Harvest Automation New harvest machinery and technology, such as automated picking platforms and high-volume bin transport systems, reduces fuel consumption, improves productivity, reduces costs and increases picker safety in the field. Wireworm Threat Abates Remember wireworms? Of course you do. It wasn’t so long ago the pesky critters which come in 14 different species in the Pacific Northwest, were eating many farmers’ lunch as they ate the roots of wheat plants. Numerous stories in Wheat Life have described the problem, which began with loss of the chemical Lindane in 2006. Newer generation seed treatments called neonicotinoid (neonics) appeared to deter the worm, but not kill it. The Washington Grain Commission acted quickly, assigning the Washington Wheat Distinguished Aaron Esser, Washington Professorship, a $1.5 State University Extension million endowment, to regional agronomist Washington State University entomologist Keith Pike in 2011. David Crowder took over the project upon Pike’s retirement. Pike assembled a team of researchers from around the Northwest, including Montana, to map wireworms, determine their species and destructiveness, and conduct research looking at chemical controls, including the proper threshold for neonic seed treatments. Although the distinguished chair funding has now been assigned to another WSU researcher, the wireworm effort continues to receive WGC funding as a separate $60,000 line item. In episode 26 of the Wheat All About It! podcast, (available on iTunes and the WGC website at www.wagrains. org) Aaron Esser, WSU extension regional agronomist based in Ritzville, said the distinguished chair funding from the WGC “did its job” in helping researchers learn much more about wireworms and how to control them.

ing chemical companies to higher neonic thresholds, he now believes higher rates do increase wireworm mortality.

wireworm, Limonius californicus, known as the sugarbeet wireworm and Selatosomus pruininus, known as the great basin wireworm.

“We see reduced populations, I’m assuming it is mortality, but the portion of the study didn’t look at counting dead wireworms,” he said, adding, “there were significantly less wireworms the following year. I assume they are dead.”

Information http://wagrains.org/wireworm-threat-

Although it appears the corner has been turned in the battle against wireworms, Esser said it’s important farmers and fieldmen understand what wireworm damage looks like as well as which species predominates on a specific farm. In Eastern Washington the three main species are Limonius infuscatus, also known as the western field

Wireworms are 1/4 to 3/4 inch long and have slender, semi-cylindrical bodies. They are a white, yellowish, or coppery color and have three pairs of legs behind the head.

“We really ramped up and learned a lot more about the species. That went a long way to learning more about what we are dealing with. It was tremendous,” he said. In the podcast, Esser noted the moment his wireworm project started: June 14, 2008. That’s the day he came upon a field that had been ravaged by the larval form of the click beetle despite the application of a seed treatment. “That’s when I realized we had something a lot bigger going on,” he said. Esser initially believed that neonics seed treatments against wireworms were suppressive, but did not affect their numbers in the field. WSU Scientist’s Species Discovery Helps Save Colorful Peony From Ugly Disease A symbol of good fortune and happy marriage, the peony has been a beloved centerpiece of floral arrangements and wedding bouquets for hundreds of years. Pacific Northwest farmers have found success growing these bountiful blooms for a thriving global market. But they’re held back by a devastating disease: a fungus called Botrytis. Stippling the peony’s emerald leaves with unsightly blotches of brown and purple, Botrytis can ruin up to half of growers’ crops long before they’re ready to sell. What’s worse, the fungus can strike invisibly, turning a shipped box of seemingly perfect flowers into a brownstreaked mess, leading to upset customers and cancelled payments. “Diseases caused by Botrytis are the peony’s number one health problem,” said Andrea Garfinkel, a fall 2017

graduate from Washington State University’s Department of Plant Pathology. Garfinkel is helping farmers put a stop to this pervasive pest. Working with growers and scientists in the United States and Europe, she has discovered that there is more to this disease than anyone ever suspected. Surveying 12 U.S. states using modern molecular genetics tools, Garfinkel discovered multiple new species of Botrytis, including one new species that affects grapes and peonies. She also found five other fungal diseases that had never been reported in the United States before. “Additional knowledge about diseases that impact peonies, such as Botrytis, allows for more efficient and effective use of costly sprays, while ensuring bigger, healthier peony crops,” Garfinkel said. “That’s a win for both peony farmers and consumers.”

Chevron Lubrication Specialists for Over 50 Years!

Answers for a growing industry “When you study an old disease but apply new technology to it, you come up with new answers,” says Patricia Holloway, emeritus horticulture professor at the University of Alaska-Fairbanks and member of Garfinkel’s research committee. For more than 15 years, Holloway has worked with Alaska farmers to build a successful export peony industry. But, as Alaskan farmers cleared forests to put in peony fields, Botrytis has plagued them “almost from day one,” Holloway said. Affecting every part of cultivation, from planting to harvest and storage, Botrytis is expensive and labor intensive to control. Holloway turned to WSU Professor Gary Chastagner, an expert on Botrytis in ornamental crops. Garfinkel, one of Chastagner’s doctoral students, accepted the challenge to find out what was happening to peonies in Alaska and other western states. Farm visits to collect DNA Over the last three years, Garfinkel worked with Holloway and Chastagner to visit growers in Alaska, Washington and Oregon. The researchers sampled diseased specimens at planting time, during the growing season, and when plants went dormant. After collecting samples from the blemished foliage and flowers, Garfinkel cultured the fungus, extracted its DNA, then used a process called polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, to find the code for its genes. With that code, Garfinkel could compare it with other samples of fungi to see how they are related. That was how she revealed several new species. “Correct identification is the first step to managing any disease,” said Garfinkel. “It’s just like when you’re sick, and if you use an antibiotic on a viral infection; it doesn’t work. If growers don’t know what’s really hurting their

plants, they could be doing a lot of work and spending a lot of money for nothing.” The first of her reported discoveries, a new species called Botrytis euroamericana, found jointly with Italian scientists, was detailed earlier this year in the journal Mycologia. Garfinkel also revealed, for the first time in the Northern Hemisphere on peonies, a fungus called Mycocentrospora acerina, found only recently for the first time on peonies in Chile. “Andrea has opened up a lot of eyes,” Holloway said. “She’s added almost one third as many names to our list of known species.

“Her work has shown us that the Botrytis disease problem is far more complex than any of us thought,” she added. “Andrea’s knowledge could make management more precise and economical, and educate peony growers worldwide.” Contact: Andrea Garfinkel, WSU Plant Pathology doctoral graduate, andrea.garfinkel@wsu.edu More information at http://news.cahnrs.wsu.edu/blog/ article/wsu-scientists-species-discovery-helps-save-colorful-peony-from-ugly-disease/

Funding Agricultural Research for a Sustainable Food Supply Wheat farmers in Washington breathe a small sigh of relief as wheat prices come in at slightly above the record lows of the past two years - but not high enough. Many of our farmers are unable to break even financially for a third year, due to factors such as increasing competition on the global market and issue of quality related to climate. Agricultural research is vital to keep our protect our state’s farmers and our sustainable food supply. In some years, low prices are exacerbated by an increase in an issue known as “falling numbers.” This refers to higher levels of a particular enzyme that reduces the quality of wheat for types of baking and cooking. Falling numbers occurs due to climate issues, specifically high daytime temperatures followed by sharp temperature drops at night. For the past two years, falling numbers have hit Washington wheat growers hard. Thankfully, falling numbers occurred far less frequently in 2017. Wheat Quality and The Global Market While farmers have seen higher yields this year and falling numbers didn’t prove to be as devastating, prices remain low. According to Michelle Hennings, the executive director of the Washington Association of Wheat Growers, to break even, wheat farmers need to earn $6 a bushel. Recently, farmers have seen returns less than $5 a bushel. In recent years, falling numbers have driven prices even lower, making our wheat less competitive on the global market, costing U.S. wheat growers between $30 and $130 million in 2016. Despite low prices, high yields disqualify farmers from receiving crop insurance despite the huge financial losses. Farming below the break-even point, lack of crop insurance inhibits farmers’ ability to insure future crops. With year after year of financial losses, more farmers are choosing to not grow wheat. As a result, the number of Washington acres in wheat production is declining and we’re losing a significant contribution to our state’s economy. Nationally, wheat acres have fallen by more than 30% since the peak in

1981, declining by 13% just in the last year. The U.S. exports 46% of our wheat. Losing share in the global market due to quality issues is an unnecessary blow to our farmers and the economy that could be resolved through research. Research is Vital for a Sustainable Food Supply Research to produce a product of the highest quality has become increasingly important to keep our agricultural goods competitive in an increasingly crowded global market. Falling numbers didn’t hit as hard this year, but that doesn’t mean next year’s climate won’t cause problems. Research to create new and stronger breeds of wheat could overcome these challenges in the future. Research takes funding. Initially, budget cuts proposed by the current administration would have closed 17 ag-

ricultural research facilities across the country. Keeping our agricultural labs open is vital to protecting the food supply and keeping our agricultural industry competitive in the global market. In the heart of Washington State’s Palouse region, at Washington State University, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Western Wheat Quality Lab undertakes the challenge of breeding the next generation of highquality wheat. Please voice your support for funding to improve all sectors of U.S. agriculture and protect our sustainable food supply. Vets on the Farm Cultivating the next generation that feeds this country and takes care of the land

A new generation of soldiers are separating from their military life and looking for work in something fulfilling and engaging. At the same time, America is losing our farmers and ranchers at an alarming rate. It is estimated that the average American farmer is over 60 years old and approaching retirement without a replacement. It is also estimated that we will need a million new farmers to feed America over the next 10 years. Vets on the Farm believes our Veterans can fill that need!
