Mt. Spokane Trail 104 Repair by Holly Weiler

Each winter Washington Trails Association crew leaders meet with land managers around our local area to identify priority projects for the upcoming trail work season. For 2016 at Mount Spokane, that priority project was Trail 104. This is the short connector trail that starts at the Lower Mount Kit Carson Loop Road near the intersection with Trail 110 and heads up a short, steep hill to tie into Trail 100. It’s a popular trail that has a history of erosion issues due to the steepness of the grade. In order to help prevent erosion and make trails sustainable, trails that ascend a slope should average approximately 10% grade. When measured with a cli-

nometer (a tool for determining trail grade), parts of trail 104 were at 20% and even 30% slope. There were also exposed tree roots at the upper end of the trail segment, with measured dropoffs of up to 19”. For this project, we focused on short trail realignments in some areas in order to reduce the grade. At the top of the climb, a realignment wasn’t possible, so we instead installed crib steps. We built the crib steps to standards established by the US Forest Service as appropriate for multi-use trails, including both equestrian and mountain bike travel. We devoted a total of fourteen volunteer days and 1,077.5 volunteer hours to this project in the summer of 2016.

www.AccuTroll.com

If this sounds like a fun project, there will be time to get involved in 2017! We have a little finishing work at the top of the project site, and we also intend to replace some old failed structures at the bottom of trail 104, where a retaining wall is currently crumbling. Watch for work to begin sometime in May 2017. Register at wta.org/volunteer or look for these opportunities to be posted to the Friends of Mount Spokane volunteer site: www.mountspokanetrails.wordpress.com

Bears are one of the few species that cannot be rehabilitated back into the wild. Once they have made any type of human contact, they have lost their fear and have an irreversible impression that humans are an easy source of food. Our love for these magnificent animals provide them safety, food and medical care, so they can live long and happy lives.

The Great Bear Show obtains most of the bears as orphaned cubs due to hunters who don’t know the difference between a bore and a sow with cubs. The cubs as a result will not survive on their own. When the State Fish and #5424 Wildlife Agencies find these orphaned cubs or the U.S.D.A. finds unlicensed owners, they are sometimes contacted by these agencies to find a home for them.

Here are just a few ways that families can experience the fun of the outdoors while at the 2017 Big Horn Show. Fishing World Les Schwab’s Fishing World returns and is a mustdo activity for the whole family! Pick your favorite pool, each filled with hundreds of live fish, and drop a line. One of the staples of the Big Horn Outdoor Adventure Show is the Trophy competition. All species of North American Big Game recognized by the Boone and Crockett Club are eligible for awards. First place in each species will receive a custom-made belt buckle! Entering Trophies Trophies may be entered Thursday & Friday, March 16th - 17th from 9am to 8pm and Saturday, March 18th, from 9am to 12pm.Trophies are not allowed to be brought in through the Main Entrance. Enter through the door at Bay 3, accessed via the South Entrance. All trophies will be measured by Boone & Crockett or Pope & Young judges or qualified measurers. Once an entry has taken first place within its species (regardless of division), it is ineligible for future competitions, but may be entered as display only.

lers must have a minimum of five points (at least one inch in length). Both antlers need not be from the same species. Judging & Awards Judging will be divided into two divisions, all trophies taken during the hunting season immediately prior to the Bighorn Show and all trophies taken during any other hunting season. Winners must have harvested the animal in fair chase. Fair chase, as defined by the Boone and Crockett Club, is the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit and taking of any free-ranging wild, native North American big game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper advantage over such animals. Commercially-raised animals are not eligible.
