On Our Front Cover

‘Wake Up Horse Owners’! IT CAN and WILL happen to you! (or someone you know) What you should know about impaction colic: The main reason for impaction colic is simply, the horse eats too much dry feed or does not drink enough water. Not drinking enough water may simply be caused by a severe weather change. Horses drink when weather is warm, but if it suddenly drops overnight to 20 to 30 degrees or lower; the horse does not feel thirsty, so they do not drink adequate amounts of water. Impaction Colic is the number one killer of horses. If your horse does not drink an adequate amount of water, the digestive flow will move very slowly. This results in trapped food stuffs in the small colon. The small colon keeps doing its job of pulling out the moisture to rehydrate the horse and make fecal balls. When movement of digestion is slowed down, the colon actually pulls so much water out of the feed stuff, that it is now sticking (adhering) to the mucosal lining. If given mineral oil as a treatment for impaction colic, this may not work

because of the barrier made in feed stuffs sticking to the mucosal lining. Also, giving muscle relaxants (NSAIDs) as a treatment for impaction colic may not work because you need the smooth muscles to help with peristalsis (wave like movements) in moving partial digested feed stuffs through. SayWhoa! product assists in reversing the situation to aid in bringing body fluids back into the colon which supples up the mucosal lining which then releases the adhering feed stuffs. Then the ionic solution of calcium plus other natural ingredients aid in stimulating the smooth muscles needed for peristalsis which assists in elimination of retained stools. SayWhoa! is what you do first when you see signs of colic. With a 5 year shelf life, no temperature control and the horse just swallows (even your care taker can give). Use as your first defense when you see signs of colic in horses. For more information, go to www.HorseSenseSolutions.com or call 800-448-8180. See why veterinarians recommend this and leading trainers won’t be without it.

SayWhoa! at Monty Roberts’ Flag Is Up Farms. Well known as the “Horse Whisperer.” In our experience here at Monty Robert's Flag Is Up Farms we had 100% success with using SayWhoa!. We had several wild mustangs that we adopted from the BLM and three of them had colic in the span of two weeks. We used your product and saved all three including one that was severe and thought to not survive. I highly recommend this product and would always keep a few bottles around for safety’s sake. –Kind regards, Laurel Roberts (Monty Roberts’ Daughter)

Directions to Riverside State Park Equestrian Area By Ken Carmichael The Riverside State Park Equestrian Area may be the best kept secret in the Spokane equestrian community. This area, at the south end of the park, provides camping, arena, round pen, trail course and miles of equestrian trails. But it can be hard to find. People come to this area for many reasons. Horse trainers are using the facilities, along with riders that just do not have these facilities at home or equestrian groups that want a place to meet and maybe hold some drills. In addition, there are some great equestrian shows, training and fundraisers put on by local equestrian organizations. Some of the later that come to mind are: September 17: Free Rein Therapeutic Riding 2nd Annual Ride/Hike-A-Thon. This hiking & trail riding event helps support the equine therapy programs for children and adults with disabilities. It’s a great program. Contact: www. freereinspokane.org.

September 24: Scavenger Hunt sponsored by Ponderosa Chapter of Back Country Horsemen. There will be chili, a raffle, door prizes, a crazy hat contest and lots of fun – contact: www.pbchw. com 4or Ken Carmichael: kcarmichael2225@gmail.com, or (509) 466-2225. The Equestrian Area is not the easiest place to find if you have not been there. Directions can be confusing and the name of the road has been changed so Googling can put you on the wrong side of the river. SO, the following directions should help you find the area so that you may use these great facilities and attend some fun and interesting events. On most days a Discover Pass is required. DIRECTIONS TO RIVERSIDE STATE PARK EQUESTRIAN AREA: There are 7 trailheads in the park, see maps. The main equestrian trailhead is at the Equestrian Area at the south end of the park. Other trailheads can be found on a map. If coming from the west on I-90 take Exit 272, cross over the freeway, then turn right on Hayford Road and a quick left to be headed north on Hayford Rd. Go through the light at Highway 2 and past the Northern Quest Casino. The road takes a natural right then a natural left which puts you on Trails Road. About 2.5 miles you turn left on Equestrian Lane. If you start going uphill you have gone too far. Note the name was recently changed to Equestrian Lane from Aubrey L White Parkway. On Equestrian Lane go about a mile and turn right and through the white gate. If coming from the east to keep from driving through city traffic, we recommend that you stay on the freeway through Spokane and take Exit 277 to Highway 2 and Davenport. From the exit go 3.3 miles to Flint Road, this is the first light. Take a right on Flint Road and go 2 miles to Hayford Road. This is the stop sign at a “T” intersection. Turn right on Hayford Road which turns into Government Road. After taking the right go 2.3 miles to Equestrian Lane. If you start going uphill, you have gone too far. Go left on Equestrian Lane. Note, the name was recently changed to Equestrian Lane from Aubrey L White Parkway. On Equestrian Lane go about a mile and turn right and through the white gate.

The Scoop on West Nile Virus and Your Horse Freya Stein, DVM, McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital

horsemanship

West Nile Virus has appeared in the Northwestern horse population. These are the first horses in the Inland Northwest to test positive and die from West Nile Virus. As horse owners we are understandably concerned about our beloved steeds. The best way to protect your horse is Freya Stein DVM, through knowledge McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital of the disease and its prevention. The virus was first detected in Uganda in 1937 and arrived in the eastern U.S. in 1999, quickly spreading across the country and causing disease in humans, birds and horses, with rare reports of disease in dogs and alpacas in the years since. Birds are the host for the virus (meaning the virus can live and replicate in the animal), and mosquitoes acquire the virus from biting infected birds. Mosquitoes, in turn, infect humans and horses, neither of which are capable

of transmitting the virus to other animals. Thus, WNV is not a communicable disease and affected horses are not contagious to other horses or humans. The virus can cause a range of neurological signs, resulting in anything from mild, transient illness to death. The virus directly infects and destroys neurons and supporting cells, as well as causes inflammation within the central nervous system, eventually causing flaccid paralysis. Clinical signs of disease include depression, widespread muscle twitching (particularly noticed in the muzzle), and weakness and instability. The gait will often appear abnormal and range from dragging the toes to swaying from side to side at the walk and even falling down. Depending on the virus strain, some horses will develop Cataplexy, a type of transient semi-sleep state that is triggered by eating or exercise. Severely affected horses can lose the ability to stand or even lift their head or neck. Horses that reach this stage of disease are much less likely to recover, but more mildly affected horses who remain standing will usually recover with appropriate supportive care. However, return to full function may take weeks to months, and some horses will retain a degree of weakness and/or gait deficit. Case fatality rates in horses have ranged from 30-40%. There is no specific treatment for WNV, and care involves reducing inflammation and supporting normal function. Antiinflammatory drugs such as Bute or Banamine are frequently

used, as is DMSO. Vitamin E is given orally as a neuroprotectant. For horses that are not drinking on their own, intravenous fluids are used to maintain hydration. Horses unable to stand can be placed in a sling to prevent muscle damage from lying on the ground for an extended time. Vaccination is key in disease prevention. There are multiple vaccines available, all of which require an initial vaccination followed by a booster vaccine approximately one month later, then once yearly booster vaccinations thereafter. Horses should ideally be vaccinated in the spring to have maximum protection prior to mosquito emergence. While all horses are at risk, young horses less than 5 years old and geriatric horses are at particular risk. Foals born to mature and vaccinated mares are protected until about 4 months of age, at which point they should begin their vaccination series. If your horse has not been vaccinated yet this year, it’s not too late!

Ann Kirk Sensible Trailer Loading - Part1 This is an article that I’ve meant to write for a long time but haven’t because the steps can take so long to explain. Though it does not take many steps, each step needs to be done several times, advancing in baby steps to the next phase to let the horse really learn the lesson. When it is done properly, you will never have a problem loading your horse again as the horse will trust you and you will know how to insist the horse load without creating an emotional crisis. This trailer loading technique does not involve force, but instead, provides the horse with proper training for the task at hand. The horse’s anxiety will be calmed as he learns that there is no force to fear. This lesson will give the horse a specific system of cues to get him to load safely and willingly. You should never be in a hurry when you are trying to teach a horse to load. Do not use equipment such as stud chains, pitch forks, pulleys, come-alongs, butt ropes, etc. Using such equipment can cause injuries to you or the horse. Fear and force will not get the horse to calmly load into the trailer. Your priorities should be to keep yourself safe, keep the horse safe and the horse should be calmer after the lesson than when you started. Have you ever wondered why your horse reacts so strongly to things like loading that to us seem minor? When we humans approach an obstacle, we analyze it, determine its purpose and usually judge its safety fairly quickly. Things

such as a puddle on the road or an enclosed area such as a horse trailer don’t raise red flags to us. But a horse does not reason like we do. They do not think in terms of how badly they might get hurt when encountering something new. With a prey animal, it is life and death. They are always thinking of living and not dying. So, when we come upon something they are afraid of and we pressure them to just do it, we can do some serious damage to their trust and it makes them very anxious about obstacles in general. They may resort to extreme behaviors to avoid being forced into something they perceive as being deadly. Some people think that if they force the horse in once, then the horse will be okay with it the next time. But, adding fear to an already uncertain horse will only make them worse the next time. Soon, you won’t be able to even get him near the trailer, much less inside. But it doesn’t have to be that way. Teaching your horse to calmly negotiate obstacles such as the horse trailer is a great lesson for any horse, not just the ones that are going to be shown or hauled a lot to the trails. When done right, your horse will approach the trailer with an understanding of what you are going to ask him to do.

He will trust that he will be guided, not pressured, through the correct steps. The horse learns to trust your request to approach new things. He gets this respect and trust from having been taught in a safe situation to go over things, under things and into places he is not familiar with and that he did not get hurt while doing so. This lesson is for the handler as much or more than the horse. The handler must learn how to approach this unfamiliar setting of trailer loading in a manner that allows the horse time to negotiate it calmly and safely. The horse, in turn, learns to approach the trailer in a calmer, more confident manner. It will soon become apparent that it is really not just about loading in the trailer but about teaching your horse a pattern for dealing with whatever obstacle or environmental setting

you might come in contact with in your daily travels. Building trust is priceless and develops confidence for the future. If you approach trailer loading as a test to see what your horse has already learned, you will pay closer attention to the lessons that are solid and the areas that need work. Your horse will need to be solid on leading, giving to the halter when excited, yielding to your space, head-down cue, responding to a “go forward” cue, etc. If you can not put your horse wherever you want away from the trailer, you will not be able to put him into the tight, noisy confines of a trailer. Again, this is a lesson to be taught when not in a hurry. I have made that mistake and still make it sometimes; especially if I have the expectation that the horse will load without an issue. I can still get caught up in the rush and start insisting on compliance to soon but I can tell you it does not get the goal accomplished any faster. Trying to hurry a lesson such as trailer loading just puts the horse on the defensive and instills fears I then have to go back and “unteach” the horse before starting again on the baby steps that make for an easy-to-load horse. Next time, I will walk you through the basics of the Lyon’s method of trailer loading. Until then, stay safe and God Bless — Ann Ann Kirk is available for Sensible Horsemanship Clinics or Workshops in your area. HORSE PSYCHOLOGY Some people are just flat good at handlin’ horses. They’ve got that good “horse savvy.” Matter of fact, there are people actually makin’ a livin’ trainin’ horses! I admire these folks’ ability and special talent. It’s always a pleasure to see a good horse workin’ right. But horses look at veterinarians like kids look at Sunday School or cowboys look at weddings. They make’m uncomfortable. Even though everybody tells ‘em it’s for their own good, they’d lots rather be someplace else. But, in the case of the horse, you can’t really blame them. Most every time I have to handle a horse it’s to stick something in him like a tube or a shot or a plastic sleeve! And, they remember you! I’ve seen horses go bug-eyed and snorty at the sight or smell of a vet truck! The only way you could give’m a shot was to sneak it to the cowboy and let him do it from horseback. Years back I went to a lecture and demonstration on “horse psychology for vets.” The gist of the whole philosophy says it is a matter of wills. Since the horse is a social animal, each band

has a pecking order. It’s not always the strongest or fastest or biggest that’s the leader. It’s the one with the most dominant personality. So every time a person meets a horse one has to dominate the other. Well, I took the schoolin’ seriously and came back ready to test my new horse psychology skills. I practiced on several “bronky” ones before I tried it out on my archenemy. He was a dark brown, non-descript, bad-headed, ill-tempered, big-footed, long-haired typical Nevada-raised feedlot slogger named Scrap Iron! In six years I had never tube-wormed Scrap Iron or given him so much as a vitamin shot! He wouldn’t let me within 20 foot of him! Following my instructions, I crouched real low and approached him. He mistook me for the Ferrier and let me pick up a front foot. I buckled on the one-leg hobble and stood up. He realized immediately the trick I pulled on him and promptly went into his “bad actor” routine. He ran around the corral on three legs, he reared, rolled, snorted, slobbered, kicked, fell, cussed and generally just made a fool of himself. Which, of course, was the plan. After soakin’ him like this for twenty minutes, I went over and humiliated him in every way I could think of. I tickled his flank, handled his tail, patted his belly, stuck my fingers in his mouth, nose and ears. He stood and took it, glaring at me. Then I took off the hobble and repeated the tickling, handling, patting and poking while he stood there shaking and hating me. But he did stand. I tubed him two or three times and gave him his first full series of vaccinations without a twitch, a foot up or an ear. The only restraint was a halter, my voice and his knowledge that when it was him against me, it was ME in charge. It took forty-five minutes and was the pinnacle of my horsedom. He never forgot and the times I worked on him over the years he allowed it. It was a good arrangement, I got him vetted and he still hated me. For those of you who think this little experience swelled my head some of you’ll be pleased to know that the last time I wormed Scrap Iron, I turned my back on him and he bit me on the shoulder. I whirled around and he had this innocent look on his face. I stared at him. He smiled just a little and seemed to say. “I’m just keepin’ you on your toes, kid, so you don’t get too cocky. It’s for your own good!” www.baxterblack.com
