POCO LENA HICKORY

Standing at Collier Ranch, Springdale, Washington

Last year about this time, Barb and I were traveling to Montana to pick up a new addition to our herd. We had located a really well bred filly we felt would be a great addition to our bloodlines. While there, we looked at the broodmares and foals, then was introduced to the sire of these foals, Poco Lena Hickory, an own son of Doc’s Hickory. We were so impressed by Poco and the foals, we bought both fillies and the colt. This past spring, we called about breeding some of our mares to Poco and asked if the owners would consider selling Poco. We feel so fortunate to have been able to work out buying and bringing Poco home to live with us at Collier Ranch in Springdale, Washington. Poco is a finished cutter and an NCHA money earner. We took Poco to our trainer, Rhett Rigby of Drummond, Montana, for his opinion since he will be starting the colts. Rhett has been showing Poco at RMBA

shows this summer and won a first, two seconds and two thirds in Ranch Horse Competition. Poco is truly impressive when he is working a cow – regardless whether cutting, working cowhorse, or roping. Poco’s personality and disposition are such that Rhett’s 8-year old son loves riding him and told Rhett “we need to buy him, Dad.” Rhett said, “but he’s not fo sale.” Wyatt added, “but dad, we need to buy him”! Poco passes those traits on to his foals. Jack, Hanna, and Sis are very gentle and have a million dollar disposition – curious, intelligent and trainable. They are so willing and eager to learn - a real joy to work with. Poco’s colt, Jack, has that “wow factor” everyone is looking for in a great cutter or reining horse. I have spen approximately 3 hours with him so far and he trailer loads picks up his feet, side passes, crosses tarps and bridges, does rollbacks in the round pen and is well sacked out, in fact I can crack a whip all around him. Mind you he hadn’t even had a halter on him till about a month ago. He seems very eager to learn and is a joy to work with. Not bad for a yearling! To assure breeding to this great stallion, early booking is important. On the internet www.collierranchllc.com Greg & Barb Collier, 509/939-0585 Photography by Teresa Rigby

Just Being a Mare - By Betsy Kelleher If you are excusing a mare’s misbehavior with those words, “just being a mare,” a different perspective would be more effective. Husbands have been known to shrug off a wife’s emotions by saying, “she’s just being a woman,” and it only makes things worse! Mares are like women. They are both female and their problems deserve to be taken seriously. Wise mare owners recognize hormonal behavior, but they don’t use that as an excuse for a lack of understanding. When mares behave badly, look for a physical reason or a training issue before blaming everything on hormones! You can’t fix something until you know what needs fixing. Let me tell you about a certain mare that became dangerous to ride. Everyone told her owner to just trade her in for a gelding. But this owner kept looking for an answer and didn’t give up. She finally found someone to look at the situation objectively, and the solution had nothing to do with gender. It had to do with a badly fitting saddle. Once that was changed and the mare was comfortable, this owner was able to enjoy her mare and find great satisfaction in the relationship. A friend of mine bought a mare that kicked at other horses while ridden. Instead of accepting this as “mare behavior,” she worked to change it. It took consistent effort and some help from a trainer, but this same mare now can be ridden safely with other horses. Distinguishing “mare behavior” is the key. In a natural herd, mares have a great responsibility to take care of things and

it helps to understand their instinctive role. When a mare is acting rude or dangerous, modification is needed. If the problem really is hormones, there are several natural supplements that can help a mare become calmer. I’ve used chamomile tea as well as Mare Magic with good results. Quite often, it is a training issue. Mares definitely need good training to help them overcome their emotional dispositions. Pain can often cause bad behavior, whether it’s a saddle or bit, or a need for chiropractic care. Riders can seek help from a good trainer to be sure the way they ride isn’t causing the problem. Some mares have experienced past trauma or abuse that causes unusually fearful behavior. Extra patience and understanding plus basic exercises can help create needed confidence and trust. Ride a gelding and put him away, and he probably won’t care. But a mare wants a close relationship (just like a woman). She wants your full attention and appreciates extra fussing and grooming - my Lady gives me hugs as I put her bridle on. If a woman feels loved, she will do anything for her man. A mare will give her all and more for an owner she trusts. Treat her like a lady, or you may regret it! Full stories of both mares mentioned in this article are found in a book compiled by Betsy Kelleher, along with many other stories about mares. For more information about MARES! ON THE EDGE OF COMMON SENSE by Baxter Black, DVM

30TH YEAR EDITORIAL This year marked my 30th writing this column. The column runs in 150 papers around the country and in Canada. For the most part they can be described as trade publications, or as a smaller weekly or daily. It is impressive to me how many of these publications continue to remain in business when their larger metropolitan counterparts are falling victim to the internet and 24 hour television and radio news stations. The obvious reason that the smaller weeklies and dailies weather the storm is that they cover the local news that no one else covers. As is the case in trade publications, that cover a speciďŹ c topic such as rodeo, horses, farming, feedlots, ranching, stock dogs, purebred anything, regional agriculture, rural living and western style or fashion. However, in my 30 years of working with these publications, I would say the factor that most affects their success is the editor/publisher’s “loveâ€? of the newspaper business. I could use the word dedication, commitment, tenacity or endurance, especially were I able to print them alongside a rogue’s gallery

of portraits showing these ink-stained, sleeves-rolled-up, scuffed shoes, stacked desk, tie loose, harried, phone-in-hand, always-behind, captains of their trawler on the high seas of deadline. It really matters to them that their publication is good in content, quality and accuracy. They routinely seem to be penny pinchers. Thrifty, often suspicious of columnists and cartoonists who seem to place a higher value on their own work than the publisher does. “Come on,â€? I say, “I just want to raise it a dollar a week. Postage has gone up again, pencils cost more, my children are in rags, my wife is pregnant, my horse is lame, my dog got run over‌â€? “That’s over $50 a year, son!â€? says the editor. “That would feed a dozen photographers for three days, two reporters for a week or pay for one ad salesman’s lunch with a customer! Besides, you’ve been sending your columns by e-mail for three years! I was actually going to deduct the cost of postage and handling from your fee‌sort of spread the wealth, so to speak.â€? Most editor/publishers I have known have a toughness for negotiation, be it words or wages. I think that comes because they are ďŹ ercely possessive of each and every issue that carries their name. Who knows, they think, it might be read on the desk of the Oval OfďŹ ce! Or quoted on Bill O’Reiley, or on the bottom of a bird cage on the space shuttle appropriately opened to my column and placed directly under the parakeet! My thanks to all those hard working, deadline-driven, dedicated true believers in the printed word, who keep us honest and informed. I’m proud to be in your bird cage. www.baxterblack.com

K-Line is a revolutionary flexible hose line sprinkler irrigation system designed to reduce the time and money you spend on irrigation. At the heart of the system is a series of small, tough plastic pods protecting a small sprinkler firmly attached to special K-Line low density poly pipe. The system can be run on low pressure and is designed to distribute water on a slow absorption method for up to a 24 hour period, firstly, to eliminate the need to shift irrigation several times a day and, secondly, to allow maximum absorption into the soil, reducing run-off and pooling. K-Line uses less water much more effectively. K-Line is also very flexible. Variables such as running time per day/night, rotations, application rates, etc., can be easily adjusted to suit your farm management style. Ann Kirk’s SENSIBLE HORSEMANSHIP Handling the Reins Happy Thanksgiving to all the readers and horse lovers out there! The holiday season is fast approaching and that usually doesn’t leave much time for our horses but you can always learn more for the next time you get a chance to spend time with your friend. Did you know that even just taking 10-20 minutes every few days to work on something will keep your horse tuned up and ready for the days when you can do the ‘big’ stuff? The bridle work from the ground or directional control exercises are great stuff and it all makes the horse quieter and safer for later. Don’t make it all or nothing. The little sessions add up to big rewards. Before we go any farther in the saddle, I want to talk about handling the reins. How you handle your reins is very important, especially when riding a green-broke horse. He will need lots of guidance but he will also need enough slack in the reins to develop his responsibility for self-control. When I see people get hurt on a ‘new’ horse, it usually can be linked to one of these 2 common mistakes; either too much slack or

The Tack Trunk

not enough. Either one can be dangerous and I will explain why. I ride and teach almost exclusively in a snaffle bit. Because I have used one for so long and am so familiar with how to get exceptional control with one, it is the logical piece of equipment to put on the horse. It is an accepted fact in the horse training world that we use a snaffle to start a horse. Well, if I have the best communication and control on a horse who knows nothing about being ridden, why should I need a more severe bit, the longer I ride my horse? John Lyons first pointed this out to me and I totally agree. So, unless I need to change bits for showing or something specific, I still prefer the snaffle. But, most people equate, riding in a snaffle with riding 2 handed. They think of ‘plow-reining’ or driving and tend to hold the reins separately with one in each hand. This makes it harder to gather slack quickly when needed but still leave enough slack in the reins to not desensitize the horse to the bit when all is well. If I ride with constant contact on my horse, he will learn to tolerate the pressure and lean more and more on the bit. When I need him to be light or when an emergency arises, the amount of pressure it will take to effect a change may be more than I can apply. But, if I ride with too much slack in the reins, I will not be able to gather the slack quickly enough

to correct sudden reactions. Horses can accelerate so fast and I will be left scrambling for control. Either scenario reduces my ability and safety while riding. So I want to ride with a little slack in the reins when I am not asking the horse for some response. Having slack in the reins also gives the horse more responsibility. But how do I do this with a rein in each hand and still maintain control if something spooks my mount? I either have my hands too far back to be efficient or I have to ride with my arms extended forward too far for comfort. One way gives me a backache and the other finds me trying to pull the reins through my body or over my head to get enough slack out to make a correction. Neither one is the best option for a fun, safe ride. So, what is my solution? Ride with a ‘middle hand’ and an ‘active hand’. I introduced these terms last month and will build on them here. You will still be riding with 2 hands in a sense but will be working more with one side or the other. By holding the reins in one hand and having the other free, your corrections can be quicker, smoother and more effective than before. Here’s how. Hold the reins in one hand. We will start with the left side of the horse so your right hand will be the ‘middle hand’. Hold both reins the same length in your right hand with just enough slack to not have pressure on your horse’s bit. This leaves your left hand free or ‘active’. Whenever you need a response on the left side of the horse, you take the slack out by lifting with your ‘middle’ right hand and letting the left rein slide through your ‘active’ left hand until you have the contact

you need to get your response. Close your ‘active’ hand on the rein and drop the ‘middle’ hand to give the slack back into the right rein so it won’t interfere with your request. When you are done with what you asked, just release the left rein to return the slack. When you switch to the right side of the horse, you will switch hands on the reins so your ‘middle’ hand will be your left and your ‘active’ hand will be the right. If you need both rein control, your ‘middle’ hand will lift the slack and your ‘active’ hand can slide down and take hold of both reins to effect the change you are looking for. When done, turn loose with the ‘active’ hand and the slack drops right back to the horse. The best way to practice this way of handling the reins is either in the house at night while watching TV or while on a well started horse that you don’t have to be worrying about your safety. I am not saying that I never ride 2 handed. Many exercises work better that way. But for trail riding and other exercises that work laterally, this is my favorite way of handling the reins. If you have any questions about this or anything else, write me and we will chat. Until then, take care and God Bless.........Ann For more information on Ann Kirk and her Sensible Horsemanship Program, go to www.annkirk.com.
