Ann Kirk’s SENSIBLE HORSEMANSHIP In the Saddle - 1st Time Up! “Well, it’s about time!” many of you might say. If you have been following the lessons all the way through, you may have felt that you and your horse would be old and gray by the time I got to the riding part. But, I believe it is better to err on the side of extra caution than to get on too quick. If I try to steal a ride or two, I might have some healing up to do, then still have to go back and build a strong foundation. Experience says I get where I am going faster if I take my time and don’t have to back up to rebuild. And then there are those who have absolutely loved the ground work but are dreading the day when it is time to get in the saddle. I have been there too. Ground work is safer and if things go wrong, I don’t have to worry about hitting the ground. There are times when I have had to convince myself that I have done all the basics correctly, my horse is ready and then get in the saddle even if I am still a little concerned. If I am really in doubt because of something I do not feel is done well enough, I will make sure I have fixed that before stepping up.

The goal is to connect you with your horse by teaching you sensible, hands-on exercises that will reduce frustration and make your partnership possible.

So, today is the day you are getting. You have saddled and bridled him and warmed him up including a fair amount of trotting and loping just to be sure he has no ‘bugs’ about the saddle or is just feeling playful. My first mounting will usually be at the end of a ground work session. The ground session will use some of his excess energy while getting him better trained mentally and emotionally and he is more settled for mounting. Don’t misunderstand what I am saying here. I do not believe I can get a horse tired enough that he will not buck or bolt if he gets scared. That is impossible! But I don’t get on ‘fresh’ colts either. I do work that benefits my riding control and gives me the best chance for successful progression. As I go along, I spend less and less time ‘warming up’ and more and more time in the saddle until I can just saddle up and go. Some horses never get away from needing a little ground warm-up and it is safer to get in the habit of doing it rather than getting dumped off and hurt because you thought it wasn’t necessary. Though either side is fine to start with, I usually begin on the left side. Recheck your saddle to make sure it is tight. Any accident caused by a loose cinch should never happen. Pick up the left rein with almost all the slack out and gather a handful of mane just in front of the saddle. The right rein is loose but not enough that the horse can step on it. Pull

on the mane, then release and walk away, asking the horse to turn and face you. Repeat several times from both sides. I mount holding the mane with one hand as it is less pull on the withers and causes less discomfort for the horse. Remember to ask the horse to move almost every time so he won’t get locked up and surprise you. When the horse is comfortable with this, pick up the rein, grab the mane and put your foot in the stirrup by standing at his shoulder and facing his tail. Take your foot out and walk away. Gradually add weight in the stirrup, then release. Do on both sides. Advance until you can put weight in the stirrup, hold the mane and the cantle and bounce around to face forward like you will for mounting. When you take your foot out of the stirrup, disengage his hip before walking away. Do as many reps as it takes to be sure the horse is comfortable before actually stepping up in the stirrup. Next, you are going to stand up in the stirrup. Follow the pattern as before only this time pull yourself up until you are standing in the stirrup. Try to pull more on the mane instead of the cantle. Also, try to step up fairly quickly so as not to pull excessively on the saddle. Balance your weight over the horse but don’t lay on the saddle. Move your hand with the rein from the mane to the saddle horn so you won’t be leaning over the horn if the horse moves suddenly. You should have enough slack in the rein so you don’t pull on the horse when you move your hand to the horn. Stay up only a moment, then step down by rotating your back towards the horse’s head so you won’t be in a position to get kicked. Disengage his hip and walk away. If your horse jumps forward when you step up, just step off and disengage his hip. If he continues to seem overly concerned by the step-up, a bucket makes a great transitional tool. I explained its use in the June article. Another step, if you’re fairly bouncy, is to just bounce on the leg not in the stirrup. Start soft and get higher and higher, going in stages until you just bounce all the way up. This has worked well and gets the horse better sacked out. Progress until you can stand in the stirrup, reach over and pet the horse on his neck, shoulders, hips and rump and move the stirrup on the off side. Remember to step down, move the hip, walk away and start again often from both sides. Evaluate the horse carefully! When you are absolutely sure that you and the horse are ready, you should mount like you

are mounting a well trained horse. Make sure you have the rein properly gathered on your side. Decide before starting that you are getting all the way on and then mount up and sit down. Don’t put your foot in the off side stirrup and get right back off and walk away. Praise him and mount again, then off again. Advance to staying on longer and longer. Get on, pet him and get off. Get on one side and off the other. Move the hip from the ground occasionally. Remember when you dismount to do so in one smooth motion and step away from the horse. As always, this does not have to all be done in one session. Break it into several days and it will be a non issue. Next month, we will talk about moving the horse with the bridle and getting started on riding. This is just the ďŹ rst of many wonderful days ahead so keep up the good work and we will meet again next month. Until then, God Bless you and yours......Ann For more information on Ann Kirk and her Sensible Horsemanship Program, go to www.annkirk.com. PRINCIPLES Sometimes you have to choose between personal principles and sympathetic understanding. For example, as a public personality, I have deliberately chosen to decline invitations to do political fund raisers. Although I have strong opinions, I leave those national issues to pundits with thicker skin. Once I had a request to make a commercial for a lady running for ofďŹ ce. I explained politely for the reasons stated, that I wasn’t comfortable doing politics. “Fine,â€? she said, “Here’s what I want you to say‌â€? It was my mother-in-law. Of course I made the commercial! I have had occasion to decline paying jobs to be on programs where I would have had to be in the company of individuals whose amblings, behavior, or writings, I ďŹ nd obnoxious. Why put myself through the stress. Last month I received a package in the mail from a publishing

I thought I recognized the author’s name or the book idea. I vaguely remembered a phone call, but it was a nice kid’s book that was well illustrated. The short story was about a young girl ďŹ nding an abandoned horse becoming concerned, and eventually getting it in a horse-rescue facility. It was well done, an honest heart-felt story that didn’t get mushy and was realistic about the problem of abandoned horses. It was better than I expected. Then I looked at the last page. It listed organizations to contact for more information about horse neglect, rescue and therapy. Staring up at me like an obscene gesture in a passing car window was listed the Humane Society of the United States. I wrote back to the publisher expressing my regret that I would not be able to pass along or recommend the book because of their association with HSUS. A group that has such a poisoned reputation in the horse world among so many veterinarians, horse raisers, trainers, cowboys, auction operators, trail riders, packers, breeders, performance and show people, not to mention many horse-related associations. In large part because they bear a chunk of the responsibility for the tragedy of animal suffering and abandonment that has befallen the magniďŹ cent equine. They were at the front of the ill-fated closure of horse slaughter plants which severely diminished the value of all horses. HSUS is the Rod Blagojevich of the horse world. I admit I didn’t ponder long on my decision, because of my familiarity with HSUS. I do feel sympathy for the author and artist. They mean well and are genuine in their concern for the problem. But they are simply innocent of the HSUS that continues to be exposed for its less-than-honest portrayal of itself as a benign fundraiser that cares for abandoned or abused horses. The publisher fell in with bad companions and will be judged thereby. For info on the underside of HSUS ďŹ nd consumerfreedom. com www.baxterblack.com

6th Annual Mountain Trail Horse Classic by Erica Mordhorst

T

he Mountain Trail Horse Classic (MTHC) held annually each summer at Eastern Slope Ranch in Baker City, Oregon was a complete success again in 2010. Set against the picturesque Elkhorn Mountain’s is a haven to equestrian enthusiasts. The weekend’s events kicked off Friday morning, July 23rd @ 8am with a course walkthru. Giving the contestants & spectators a chance to walk Raina Jamison of Boise, the course and ask the course Idaho riding Macho designer & judge’s questions. Then at 9 sharp the first contestant was on course for a day filled with classes geared towards the younger horses & newer riders. Friday night ended with a meet & greet potluck. Then Saturday morning started the same with a course walk-thru & classes & obstacles got a bit harder & more challenging. Saturday night was a great BBQ followed by a fun game of bingo where everyone had a chance to win customized hay bags or D&B Supply gift cards. Sunday morning started with another walk-thru & then straight into the most advanced trail classes,

including the Open Classic & the Non Pro Classic, the toughest course of the weekend! The MTHC is an All Outdoor – All-Natural course & an adventure to the competitive Mountain Trail Rider. Riders are judged on how well their horses navigate an Macy Thomas of obstacle. Horses & riders Milton-Freewater riding Buck alike are then judged on their ease, poise & confidence when encountering an obstacle that you would typically find on a mountain trail ride. The courses range in difficulty from easy to extremely difficult, but all of the MTHC courses are designed for riders of every level & horses of every level. Leslie Maiwald & Percy Dickerson, owners of Eastern Slope Ranch, says, “Safety is our number one priority, every obstacle is safe & secure.” To see more pictures of the contestants or of the course, visit www.EntirelyEquineMarketing.com & choose ‘view my proofs’. Competitive Mountain trail competition’s like MTHC are becoming increasingly popular. This is a great way for the entire family to be competitive & compete without incurring

At the heart of the system is a series of small, tough plastic pods protecting a small sprinkler firmly attached to special K-Line low density poly pipe. The system can be run on low pressure and is designed to distribute water on a slow absorption method for up to a 24 hour period, firstly, to eliminate the need to shift irrigation several times a day and, secondly, to allow maximum absorption into the soil, reducing run-off and pooling. K-Line uses less water much more effectively. K-Line is also very flexible. Variables such as running time per day/night, rotations, application rates, etc., can be easily adjusted to suit your farm management style. Horses can also continue to use the paddocks being irrigated. Each paddock has its own sprinkler line, customized to suit the size and shape of the paddock, and is run simultaneously depending on water supply. However, you don’t need to run them all at once. You may choose to run only what’s needed, or what’s available depending on your water constraints. The small, flexible, strong, lightweight lines can be shifted in only minutes by an ATV, by simply driving across the paddock.
