Maintaining Our Horse Trails

For those of us that like to trail ride there is nothing better than heading out on the trail with a clear mind and a good horse under us. We are fortunate around Spokane that there are so many places to ride within a short distance of home. In past articles we have talked about some of these.

Unfortunately our public land managers do not have the staff or other resources to maintain trails that meet our standards of safety, experience and facilities. That is where we come in as volunteers.

This summer the Ponderosa chapter of Back Country Horsemen (and other chapters) has been working on several projects.

Escure Ranch (BLM Rock Creek Recreation Area): This Spring we installed some trail markers and gate springs. This PONDEROSA CHAPTER project is not finished and we have permission now to put in some “You Are Here” signs on the trail. We also built a manure bunker in the equestrian camp. This is a great place for overnight camping.

Riverside State Park: In June we started a project of picking up barbwire on the Trautman Property. Some of this is standing fence and some is buried. We will finish this project on September 16. This will make riding on this close to town property much safer.

Lakeview Ranch (BLM Lakeview Recreation Area): This project has been in the planning stages for a year.

Now we have the Recreational Trails Program (RTP) grant approved and we will start removing some corrals that are in poor condition and rebuilding them suitable for trail stock September 8 and 9.

This is a great riding area that allows you to see some new country.

Rustlers Gulch (Washington Fish & Wildlife Land): This is another RTP grant project headed up by the Inland Empire Chapter of BCH (IEBCH). They obtained the grant and together the three BCH chapters (IEBCH, NEBCH and PBCH) will improve the trailhead on the west side of the property. There is a great day riding trail down to the creek and through the trees.

Colville National Forest: The Back Country Horsemen of Washington just returned from a work party camped at Gypsy Meadows. A crew of about 25 men and women spent 4 days improving trails out of the camp. This crew meets annually

somewhere in the state to improve trails. Members come from around the state to help.

As you can see there are several projects where BCH has worked with a number of different land managers to improve our riding opportunities near Spokane.

It is a pleasure to work with these managers and they welcome the help that BCH provides.

Ann Kirk What’s so great about the Round Pen? I meet many new people each year and I’m constantly amazed at how many horses lack the very basics in their training. It is sad to me that so many people get hurt each year when many accidents are preventable. The majority of problems can be traced back to the method used to lay the ground-work upon which every thing else was built. So let’s talk about the foundation that I use to build a working relationship with almost every horse that I train, the basic roundpen lesson.

Every horse, regardless of their level of training, can benefit greatly from the round-pen lessons. If I have a horse come to me that is very gentle, well behaved with respect to leading, standing tied, being caught, being haltered or bridled, etc., I may not do this lesson with them. But usually, if they are coming to my place, it is because there is a problem or they are not started. Whatever the case, this lesson is the starting point I use for establishing control and attention. It is a way for me to rapidly gain the horse’s trust without focusing on negative behaviors.

The round-pen gives me a way to evaluate the horse’s temperament, its way of going, willingness to follow, emotional control, attention span, trust level..... the list is endless.

Oftentimes, the behavior that is viewed as the problem is no more than a symptom of a foundational step that has been missed in the horse’s initial training. And also realize, if you

have a horse on a halter and lead line, (long or short) that horse also has you! The roundpen allows me to control the horse without being connected to a thousand pound animal that can hurt me. In most cases, no force is needed to get the pecking order in place and the horse willing to follow my lead.

And what about the horse? What are the benefits for it? Remember, horses are prey animals and pecking order specialists. So the round-pen gives me a way to use their language to teach what I want. For self-preservation reasons, as seen with the fight-flight response, horses will respond with their body first and their mind second. In the round-pen, I can control the flight response while helping the horse develop the mental response I am looking for. The process allows the horse to think on his own without any assistance from devices. The horse will benefit when he has to think through the logic as to why he is making a particular move.

Round-pen training will put more of a demand on the horse because he has to use his mental abilities in conjunction with his body control. With practice, he will learn to think then move. You can teach your horse to spook in place or to turn and face what frightens him instead of running. If you only get a brief warning, it is often enough for you to get the proper control to guide him through the scare.

This will replace his natural response to take off when he does not understand changes in his environment. When a horse learns to control his own instinctual responses, you are much safer and he is much calmer. You are not at the mercy of his instincts, hoping to control him by having just the right contact on the bridle at all times. I can assure you, you cannot control a frightened horse with just a bit in his mouth.

If you do use lead ropes, lunge lines, long lines, etc. to train your horse, you can get the same results, but I find it takes longer. If the horse decides to take off and you stop his action with the line, the line itself controls the feet, not the horse’s mind. When you leave the horse free, the horse learns for himself how to use his own thought process to control his emotions and movement. I do not want to take this opportunity away. The lessons will become more ingrained and permanent for the horse because he figures out the answers for himself. Having figured it out for himself, the horse will remember it longer. I have done 1/2 hour lessons with young foals just to teach them to be caught properly and had them fully remember within 5 minutes as 3 yrs old! It is amazing!! I have found that after I have completed the round-pen basics,

when I do go back to the halter and line, the horse will learn much faster than if I had not started with these techniques.

Let’s finish this article by getting set up to begin the lesson. The round pen should be 55-60 ft in diameter. The size is important because too small of a pen can make the horse feel trapped and it may try to jump out. Or it may resort to the fight response and that is not a good option either. So the horse needs to have enough room to stay at a comfortable distance yet not so far that you have to run to keep them moving. Get some type of tool that will work as an extension of your arm so you can motivate turns and movement. Some suggestions would be a lariat, lunge whip or line, halter and lead etc.

I prefer the lariat. I tried the lunge whip – too short for lazy horses. I tried the lunge line or a softer rope – they tangled too easily and didn’t throw well. It took me awhile to learn to wind the lariat back up but it definitely works best for me.

Whatever you use, practice your throwing and winding up apart from working with your horse so it will be easier when your focusing on your horse’s performance. I’ve also found it helpful to practice driving and turning your “horse” by using another person who can tell you if you are confusing in your signals.

That Time Again It’s fall on the cow outfit.

Time to get out the WD 40 and grease up the handles on the squeeze chute. Maybe find the three or four syringes that work, buy some new gaskets and barrels along with a box of needles.

Time to look for the ear tagger, nose tongs and dehorning saw.

You could stock up on hot shot batteries and plastic whips and shovel out the chute floor before it freezes.

That’ll be the easy part of workin’ your cows this fall, the mechanical tasks associated with good management. Yet, laying in wait like the hangover after the night before, is that ominous responsibility that all good cowmen dread… that’s right, boys… the open cow.

You know they are in the bunch. And you can bet your hired help, your neighbors and your family will all be lookin’ over your shoulder anxious to see your decision. They will be full of advice. But, in the end, whether you keep that open cow or not, will be strictly between you and her.

Say she bangs into the chute. Her teeth are good, she’s fat,

five years old and just weaned a 550 lb calf. The vet shouts “Open!” The vaccinators are poised waiting for your decision.

You rapidly calculate that open cow will bring $$880 at the sale Wednesday.

You dither, remembering her first calf. You had to pull it. It was a cold night in February. The two of you spent four hours in the shed getting’ that calf to suck. Once he was goin’, she took’im and never looked back! Dang, you hate to see her go.

You bite the bullet… “Cull her!” you say, but you can’t look her in the eye.

In comes a first calf heifer. Sorta thin, not full grown. She’s showin’ some potential but when the preg checker calls out “Open!”, you realize she won’t have a calf next spring. If she settles, she’ll wean her second calf 24 months from today.

That’s a long time to hold your inventory. “Cull’er,” you say.

Wow! Yer, feelin’ like a business man!

In the last chute load, an old red neck mama comes through.

You recognize her. When the boy punches her with the hot shot, you wince. Popcorn teeth, hollow flanks and a scruffy tailhead. Her bag hangs like a four dollar drape. She raised a big strappin’ calf this year but it took all she had.

She was in the first bunch of heifers you bought when you took over the ranch 12 years ago. She put you over the fence a time or two but now she doesn’t seem to care. Too old, too wore out. “Open,” comes the intrusion.

The silence is heavy. Your eyes travel down her spine and back to her lifeless eyes. “Run’er one more year!” ‘She’ll die on this place.’ Nobody says a word.

Deworming in the First Year of Life Freya Stein, DVM, McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital

One of the most impactful myths of foal management is that a foal with worms will always look “wormy,” i.e. pot-bellied with a dull, shaggy hair coat and poor growth or weight loss. In fact, it has been demonstrated that healthy, shiny, robust foals can have very high parasite egg Freya Stein DVM, counts. Please do not depend on your foal’s appearance to determine your deworming protocol!

Foals require a slightly different approach to deworming than adults mainly due to their lack of immunity against intestinal parasites. Over the first few years of life, horses gradually build enough immunity to parasites to keep infestation to a dull roar (which still requires human intervention to prevent a higher incidence of parasite-associated disease). During their first year of life, however, foals are quite susceptible to heavy infestations of gastrointestinal parasites and their associated ill effects.

The two main genera of worms infecting foals are Parascaris species (aka round worms, ascarids – long, thick white worms as adults) and large and small strongyles (aka blood worms – small, thin red worms as adults). After ascarid larvae are ingested from the environment, they migrate through the intestinal wall and into blood vessels, eventually migrating through the liver and lungs. The larvae are then coughed up, swallowed and returned to the GI tract for maturation.

Respiratory infections and inflammation can result from larval migration through the respiratory tract as larvae drag bacteria from the intestines and liver through sensitive lung tissue.

The most notorious effects of both ascarids and strongyles are gastrointestinal. Inflammation and damage to the lining of the intestines can result in the poor body condition seen in stereotypically “wormy” foals, but the pathology can have more devastating consequences. Migrating strongyle larvae can cause significant damage to the gastrointestinal vasculature, potentially preventing lack of blood flow to sections of intestine, ultimately resulting in bowel necrosis and severe colic. Ascarids are responsible for intestinal blockages, as adult worms can reach high numbers in the small intestine and tend to “ball up” and cause strong spasmodic intestinal activity. These worm impactions may require surgical correction, with a variable prognosis for survival. A little over

50% of foals survive to discharge post-surgery, but only 30% survive past one year. We suspect that this survival rate is due to the significant damage to the vasculature and intestinal walls, with high rates of adhesions and intestinal dysfunction occurring later.

To avoid these consequences, we recommend the following deworming protocol for foals: 1. Deworm the dam with ivermectin at 10 months’ gestation to prevent transmission of Strongyloides westeri via milk ingestion (and to reduce environmental egg load).

2. At 2-3 months of age, deworm with fenbendazole to kill ascarids.

3. At 4-5 months of age, bring in a fecal sample to determine which worm species the foal is carrying, then deworm accordingly (fenbendazole for ascarids, ivermectin for strongyles).

4. Repeat step 3 at 7-8 months and again at 11-12 months.

The importance of deworming with fenbendazole for ascarids include minimal drug resistance, and most importantly, lack of paralytic effect on the worms prior to death. The clumps of paralyzed and dying worms seen after deworming with ivermectin can lead to intestinal blockage and colic. This effect has not been associated with fenbendazole. Deworming at more frequent intervals does not appear to have an advantage and can lead to resistance to a dewormer. As we do not have any new dewormers in development, preservation of drug efficacy is essential.

In addition to deworming, environmental management can help reduce parasite transmission. Try to maintain a “clean” pasture or dry lot for foals - one which has had few horses on it and has been regularly cleaned of manure. There is evidence that ascarid eggs are extremely hardy and can survive freezes as well as hot, dry conditions, so manure left from previous years can harbor a large and persistent ascarid population. Ideally, avoid commingling foals of different age groups. Peak ascarid egg shedding occurs in foals 4-5 months old and 6-8 months old. Housing older foals with ones a few months younger may expose the younger, more susceptible foals to higher worm populations.
