Plan Ahead for Disaster By Michelle Binder-Zolezzi

In Washington right now so many fires are burning. I do not know anyone having horses who has not considered what to do if an evacuation is necessary for themselves, their families and their livestock. I hope this article helps you become prepared for such a time, and I pray that the information presented here is never actually needed. After a disaster of any kind, it can take months to reunite horses with their owners and that process is much easier if you have planned early and know what you will do in case an emergency evacuation is called for your area. Not having a plan increases risks including the refusal of animal owners to evacuate, early return of animal owners to unsafe areas, large animals spreading disease and becoming a danger to people in the area, abandoned animal carcasses and economic loss. The old adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” is equally applicable as the saying “Plan for the worst and hope for the best.” There are many things to consider and some long term planning is actually common sense. 1. Transport: Be able to transport your horse readily. If you own your own trailer, make sure it is in working order, licensed and road worthy. Train your horse to load easily. In an emergency situation, horses may be nervous and difficult so training can be critically important in a situation where speed is everything. It is better to move them early as a precaution

Fire near Addy, WA

than to wait to transport when flames are crackling. If you have to hand walk a horse out of an evacuation zone, start early so you are not trapped by fire or flood before you have reached safety. 2. Know Where You Will Go: Before a wildfire threatens your home and animals, make some calls to find out what resources are available to you during an emergency.

Sometimes local facilities outside the disaster zone will act as livestock shelters. Other possibilities are equine veterinary hospitals, fairgrounds, racetracks or boarding stables. Make a list of facilities and directions ahead of time. Make sure you contact facility owners before you haul your horse. Local extension services may have lists of people willing to shelter animals, your local vet, or contact a rescue organization. 3. Feed: If you have to haul your horses to a local area emergency shelter, facility or fairground, feed may not be provided. Water may or may not be available. If you own your own trailer, keep a bale or two of hay stored in the trailer. If water isn’t available at the shelter, use lidded buckets or large garbage cans to hold and transport water. Figure on 12-20 gallons of water per day per horse. 4. Identify the Animal: Take photos from every angle to show unique blazes, whorls, scars, spots, etc. If the horse has permanent identifiers such as a microchip, tattoo and/or brand, carry your documentation. Other ways of identifying your animal are a name/address tag attached to the halter, a waterproof name/address tag braided into the tail, important papers in a zip-top bag duct-taped to the halter, or even a phone number spray painted on the horse’s flank. If you leave a halter on your horse for ID purposes, make sure it is a leather one since web ones can melt. Clever use of standard livestock identification products like ear tags with names and phone numbers written in indelible ink can make a huge difference in the speed with which a found animal can be returned to the right owners. contact information on the horses hoof. Use clear hoof polish over the marker to make sure the ink stays. One company, EquestriSafe, has produced horse ID collars that go around the neck, as well as “Fetlock ID Bands which are simple and safe to put on. Branding is one of the oldest types of identification. Freeze branding is a newer development but both methods permanently mark information on the body of the horse. Microchipping is also being used more frequently to identify large livestock so talk to your veterinarian about the value of this procedure. 5. Immunize: Use the standards, Eastern and Western equine encephalitis (EEE and WEE), West Nile Virus, tetanus, and rabies. Your veterinarian may also recommend equine influenza, strangles, equine herpesvirus, or other vaccines depending on your horse’s risk factors. Also make sure your horse is current on his Coggin’s test, a test for equine infectious anemia. This is required if you have to cross state lines to evacuate to a safe area. 6. Pack Items: Be sure you take extra lead ropes, extra leather halters, buckets, hoses, tack, and towels to blindfold nervous horses. Fire extinguishers, walkie-talkies, wire cutters, and flashlights and good old fashioned paper maps should all be easily accessible. 7. Leave Them Behind: In the worst cases, you may not have time to evacuate, especially in the case of fire or flash flooding. Fill water troughs, open gates, cut fences if you have to. A tilled field of dirt can provide safety from fire in extreme circumstances. Experts recommend leaving the animals out in the pasture rather than in the barn or stall, as long as the pasture is without power lines or many trees. If there is flooding, horses can travel to high ground if they’re loose. Hopefully you’ll never have to leave your beloved horse behind, but make plans to cover all contingencies, know evacuation routes, take the precautions you feel are appropriate and you, your families and your horses will have a better chance to make it out of a disaster zone safely.

Art of Acupuncture

veterinary knowledge

a geless

by Dr. Misty Parker, DVM McKinlay & Peters Equine Hospital - Spokane, Washington

horsemanship

It is human nature to fear or be skeptical of what we do not know or understand. As I started my journey into the world of homeopathic therapies, including chiropractic, acupuncture and herbal therapy, I most certainly did not know or understand how my life would change. Ten years ago, when I graduated with a DVM degree, I did not believe in these “alternative” approaches. Today, I can proudly say that I have made a positive influence on the equine population by adding homeopathic therapies to the way I practice veterinary medicine. So I hope over the next few paragraphs I can steal your attention long enough to offer some education, and therefore some re-assurance about a topic that is still considered by some to be foreign and not widely understood. “Never be afraid to try something new. Remember amateurs built the ark, Professionals built the Titanic.” Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (TCVM), which

consists of Chinese food therapy, herbal therapy, acupuncture and Tui na “twee-na”, is a relatively new phenomenon to Westerners. Acupuncture did not gain popularity in the United States until the 1970’s. However, in a global sense, acupuncture is not new; TCVM has been successfully used in China for over five thousand years. In fact, the Chinese have been using, and recording, the use of TCVM in horses for over two thousand years. Today, acupuncture is practiced in all 50 states. Acupuncture involves inserting very sharp, solid, thin, stainless steel needles in the body at very specific points in order prevent and/or treat disease, including pain. The acupuncture points are located where nerves either divide or penetrate tissue planes and where there is low electrical resistance and high electrical conductance of the skin. At these points are free nerve endings, arterioles, veins and lymphatic vessels and tissue mast cells. Insertion of an acupuncture needle causes micro-trauma to the tissues which stimulates a local inflammatory effect, mast cell degeneration, improvement of blood and lymph flow, muscle relaxation and conduction of nerve impulses to the central nervous system. Through a complex cascade of events there is release of serum beta-endorphins, endogenous opioids, serotonin, and norepinephrine. Simply put, acupuncture needles stimulate

nerve endings which send signals to the brain that then tells the body to produce chemicals and hormones that stimulate the body to heal. An ancient Chinese acupuncture philosopher, Shen Nung, hypothesized that every person and living thing has an energy force that travels throughout the body. This energy force the Chinese call “Qi” (Chee). Qi consists of spiritual, emotional, mental and physical life activities. It is an essential part of everything in nature and is made up of two parts, yin and yang. Yin and yang represent balance of opposites, or positive vs. negative (for example, there would be no concept of light without dark). Qi flows throughout the body along what we call “meridians” (channels). There are 12 paired channels (running on both the right and left sides of the body) and 2 unpaired channels (running along the front and back midlines of the body). If the flow of Qi is disrupted, unbalanced or deficient or the meridians are obstructed, then yin and yang become unbalanced and result in disease, illness and/or pain. Acupuncture will restore the balance and promote healing. Acupuncture techniques include dry needling, electrostimulation, aquapuncture, moxibustion, hemoacupuncture and pneumoacupuncture. Dry needling is strictly inserting needles into the acupuncture points. Needles vary in gauge and length. Typically 28 gauge needles are used on horses, ranging from ½ inch to 4 or 5 inches long. Electrostimulation involves attaching electrodes to the needles that send an electrical current through them. Varying intensities, frequencies and pulsating patterns are used. Electroacupuncture was first used in China in the 1930’s and is used to get a stronger and more continuous level of stimulation. Aquapuncture is a method of injecting fluids, such as saline, vitamin B12, the patient’s own blood, or local anesthetics into acupuncture points. It is used to get a longer duration of stimulation. Moxibustion is when the herb Artemisia vulgaris is burned on or above the skin near acupuncture points. The heat and herbal essence warms the Qi and blood and will therefore increase flow. Hemoacupuncture is a technique in which a blood vessel is punctured with a hypodermic needle in order to draw blood out of the animal and release heat. It is counterintuitive to bleed weak, debilitated or pregnant animals, as well as animals with zoonotic blood borne diseases (diseases that are contagious to humans). Pneumoacupuncture is the practice of injecting air into acupuncture sites. It is most commonly used in cases of suprascapular nerve paresis (A.K.A. Sweeney). Prior to any acupuncture technique, an acupuncture scan will be done. The scan consists of applying pressure to the 14 different meridians and looking for reactivity, changes in temperature, and swelling or inflammation. The scan is very important and useful in obtaining a diagnosis as well as for finding sub-clinical problems. Your veterinarian will also assess tongue color, pulse quality, and ask questions to determine your horse’s constitution. Many different conditions can be treated with acupuncture. Some of the most common conditions acupuncture is used to treat and/or manage include back soreness, osteoarthritis, bowed tendons/tendonitis, laryngeal hemiplegia, uveitis, caudal heel pain/navicular disease, laminitis, tying up, colic, ulcers, diarrhea, pulmonary disease, reproductive disorders,

regulating ovulation, facial paralysis, allergies, non-sweaters (anhidrosis), SI pain, behavior problems, heart disease, liver disease, skin disease, insulin resistance, Cushing’s and WTEE (we’ve tried everything else). I do like to stress, however, that acupuncture works well with traditional veterinary medicine. It compliments routine veterinary care and is not a substitute or replacement. I hope this information helps to dispel the fear and myth of the unknown, and inspire you to explore the advantages that acupuncture might offer. The study and discipline of acupuncture is very intense and difficult to fully explain in less than 1000 words, however, there have been hundreds of research studies and numerous papers published that are available to those who wish to better understand TCVM. The American Journal of Traditional Chinese Veterinary Medicine (AJTCVM) is an excellent source for accurate, high-quality, peer-reviewed publications in all branches of TCVM.

Ann Kirk Sensible Saddle Basics – Part 3 How did your saddling lesson go last month? Did your horse pass the test with high scores or did you find yourself in the middle of a wreck? Putting the saddle on for the first time can be a great test of how well you have taught the Bridle Dance and emotional control exercises. Some of you will be high-fiving and grooving while others will be trying to find and fill in the holes. Either way, don’t get discouraged. Every time you add another step, it is just a test of how well you taught the one before. And, when you add something new, what you did before may get a little messy until your horse learns to tell the difference between the cues. Last time, we ended with saddling the horse, cinching him loosely, walking him through the Bridle Dance, tightening the girth a little more and repeating until the saddle was cinched on securely. I trust it all went well and that you repeated this process several times in the last couple months. I’m sure many of you have already moved your horse off into a trot and even a lope. But let me tell you how I usually do this to try to avoid bucking and possible injury to the horse. I teach this lesson to the horse without the saddle on first so they don’t have to learn a new lesson with the distraction of the saddle complicating things. Starting at the walk, I will work my horse through the Bridle Dance just like before, doing at least 10 reps on each side before advancing to the trot. Holding the rein close to the bit on the left side, I will cue

the horse forward on the circle. As he goes around, I will begin kissing and cueing with the whip until he breaks into a trot. Remember to stop cueing the moment he breaks into the trot and progress him to a continuous trot. Then disengage the hip and change sides. Do this until he will consistently break into a trot on the verbal cue and stay there until you move his hip. Now I will saddle him up as before, taking the time necessary to cinch him respectfully and do at least 10 reps of the Bridle Dance. I will hook a 12’ lead to the left side of the bit and do the above lesson again under saddle, switching the lead each time I switch sides. If he should buck, the lead allows me to still have some control without being so close to the horse. Now, holding the lead close as if it were the rein, I will again cue the horse into a circle. I will ask him to trot and will drop the lead out longer and longer until he is trotting on a bigger circle. If he stops and won’t move back into the trot,

I shorten the lead enough to reach his hip with the whip for the go-forward cue. If he tightens up and stops, that is great. I want my horse to stop if he is in doubt rather than buck. If he stops, I will praise him, wait until he is relaxed and just start again until he will trot to the left comfortably. If he bucks or thinks of bucking, I will try to slide my hand up the line, disengage his hip and start again. If he really bucks, I will try to bump the bit enough to stop him if I can do so safely. Otherwise, I will let go of the rope and let him work it out. Then pick up the lead and start again. When he is going fine for a few circles, slide up, disengage his hip to a stop, switch the lead to the other side and repeat. When you think he is ready, you can move him to the lope. He will probably need to have a longer line hooked to his bit as a 12’ line will be too short. This also should be taught without the saddle first. Be patient and let him work it through. I keep mine at a trot for several days before going to the lope. Given time, he will get comfortable changing speeds with the saddle. Next, bring him back in close with your hand holding the rein (not the lead) near the bit. From a standstill, start sacking him out. Starting softly, move the stirrups, slap the seat, flap the stirrup leathers, etc. and disengage his hip if he Dmoves. D DIncrease the intensity as he gets more comfortable with the movements and sounds. When none of this phases him, do it as he walks on the circle, asking him to keep his D D D D head dropped and relaxed as he gives to you. Stop him and

praise him often. Switch sides regularly to get him good on both sides. If you have sacked him out with stuff, without the saddle on, you could also sack him lightly with those props as he works the Bridle Dance around you. Another thing I will do is sack my horse with a rope from the saddle horn before getting ready to mount. I like to use a medium soft rope that is long enough to easily reach around the far side of the horse when he is against the fence and I am near the middle of the pen. With the reins tied up out of the way or the bridle/bit removed, I send the horse off to the left. The rope is hooked on the saddle horn, coming off on the inside. Be sure the saddle is tight as you will be pulling on the horn and you don’t want the saddle turning on the horse. As the horse goes around, I let the rope drag in the middle while I hold near the end. Starting soft and getting bigger, I start flipping the rope around the horse; on his sides, shoulders, hips and such. Get it up in the air and in against his legs. If he gets panicked, stop moving the rope so much or at all and step towards the front to encourage him to slow down. Have him turn in and stop. Flip the rope over his head or walk up and put it over his head to the other side and send him off to the right. This is also an exercise you can do without the saddle by attaching the rope around his neck and working from there. When he is accepting of the rope on the inside, try flipping it over his rump so it goes behind his back legs. Or you might have to stop him and put it in place, then send him back off. Leave slack in the rope. If you apply pressure too soon, it may be too much. Starting soft, begin to take out the slack and then drop it back in. Work up to keeping a steady pressure for a few seconds before releasing. If the horse gets really frightened, ask for an inside turn and drop the rope to the ground when he comes across. This puts the rope back on the inside. Be careful that the rope doesn’t get under the tail. If it does, don’t pull on it. Let the horse work it out until he relaxes and then the rope should drop out on its own. If not, do the turns until he stops and help him out. In the course of the turns and flips, you will most likely get the rope between and around his legs. If it doesn’t look dangerous, use it to your advantage. Apply pressure and release, flip and bump the rope, etc. until he is quiet. If he starts to get tangled and it looks like a wreck is coming, turn loose of the rope and have him stop so you can get him loose. When you are satisfied, take the rope off and call it a day. This does not all have to be done in one session. Break it into as many as you want. You will ride your horse for many, many years so taking a little extra time to get him prepared will be worth the investment. Until next time, keep refining and having fun — Ann Kirk For more information on Ann Kirk and her Sensible Horsemanship Program, go to www.annkirk.com. Developing the Trail Horse & Rider by Ken Carmichael, IEBCH Last year we held a very successful open house for the Riverside State Park equestrian area where we introduced the public to our arena, round pen, trail course and campground. This year on Saturday, September 26 we will follow that up with a new event called “Developing the Trail Horse and Rider”. This is brought to you by the Riverside State Park Foundation (RSPF) with support from the Inland Empire Chapter of Back Country Horsemen of Washington (IEBCH). All profits from the event will be dedicated to the development of the equestrian area in Riverside State Park. This is not a Trail Challenge. It is designed to help horses and riders be more confident with what you will experience on the trail. There will be a course to go through, written material to take home, a spaghetti feed, door prizes & a good time for you, your friends and your horse. Our goal is to have a fun, non-competitive event where we all come away with more knowledge and a safer horse. The Tough Enough Equestrian Drill Team will perform a grand entry and at noon break. There will also be live music to eat by. Because RSPF and IEBCH are interested in promoting safe and enjoyable equestrian experiences for our youth there is no charge for those under 18 years of age. Pre-registration ends September 18 for the best price but you may register at the door. Registration information is at www.iebch.com Thank you for supporting Riverside State Park and all the equestrian opportunities it provides.

On The edge Of COmmOn SenSe by Baxter Black, DVM

About Horses I've Known About horses I’ve known…My first was named Maggie. A Standard bred. I was in the 3rd grade. Father gave me an old cavalry saddle, split down the middle, light enough I could lift it. It was so uncomfortable I rode bareback. I went to a one-room schoolhouse with six grades. I was the only kid in the 3rd grade! Our house was on one side of the horse pasture and the schoolhouse was on the other. I rode Maggie to school and walked home. When we moved from Texas to New Mexico, my new horse was named Buck. He was a good horse to grow up on. In the ensuing years in Colorado I’ve had Cricket, who went with the divorce, Coyote, who raised my daughter, Bay who had ring bone, Leo, a rope horse who wore a bikini top over his right eye to keep him from turning out, one with a King Ranch brand who tore down my tack room, Reven Bubba, a colt, then Sonny, a left-handed heeling horse. Not to mention several I just bought and sold.

In Arizona, we made Sonny a ranch horse. Others followed; Rex Allen who raised my son, Paint that I took in trade for speaking to the Paint Association, Chaco, who became my “movie” horse in addition to his ranching responsibilities, Maria, a paint mare that I traded for Winchester who had a little Thoroughbred in him, and Tom Perry, a solid buckskin. Today we have Copper, Missy, José, straight from Mexico, and Bravo who is as big as a school bus. They all do ranch work. In my life of travelin’, I’ve ridden many borrowed horses on trail rides, at ropings, parades and grand openings, but one deserves my highest praise. I was participating in the Reba/Ben Johnson Celebrity Roping at Gaylord Arena in Gutherie, OK. Red Steagall lent me his ambidextrous white horse named Toby. I drew up with Fred Whitfield, 8 times World Championship roper. I saw Fred during the afternoon practice warm up. It was a little intimidating. I was horseless, afoot and USTRC ranked as #2 in skill, which is like kindergarten level. He rode over to me and said, looking down from his throne, “You just go out there and rope him, if you can, and if, by some chance you do I’ll rope the heels.” I stammered, “Uh…I’m left-handed.” He looked at me like I’d just pooped on the carpet, turned his horse and rode away. That evening he said, “Okay, I’ll rope him and try to drag him real slow so you might be able to catch at least one foot.” I said, “Fred, rope him as fast as you can and turn him hard.”

HORSE LOVER’S PARADISE ~ $225,000

Coldwell Banker Tomlinson of Spokane 8205 N. Division, Spokane, Washington 99208

He gave me the eagle eye. I could imagine him thinkin’, “He ain’t seen nothin’ yet.” I climbed on Toby, in Red’s saddle and backed in the box. We roped the first one in 9.0. When we came tight Fred looked across the steer at me and said, “We might have a chance,” and did his ‘raise the roof’ hand gesture. 27.7 seconds on our second steer and made the cut. Our turn on the third go we did in 7.8. Fastest in the roping so far. Toby was PERFECT! We waited. The last team to go was a team of 19-year-old boys, Ty O’Neil and Trey Miller. What are the odds, I was thinkin’. They shot out of the box like jet pilots! I think I saw contrails. Their ropes sang as they flew and in less time than it takes to drive a horseshoe nail, the horse faced and the crowd exploded! 7.7 Toby understood. He knew we just got lucky and proved my team roping philosophy; the farther you go down the arena, the faster the wheel comes off the wagon! www.baxterblack.com
