What do breast cancer awareness, singing, dancing, and skits from popular movies all have in common? They are all part of Zeta Tau Alpha’s annual Big Man on Campus philanthropy event, often referred to as BMOC. The Branigin room was filled to the brim with FC students as the 11 male contestants, representing Greek organizations and clubs, competed for the title of Mr. BMOC. And ultimately, freshman Jackson Schafer, representing Lambda Chi Alpha, was crowned as the winner. In preparation for the event, two ZTA sisters coached each contestant, which included a talent portion, a theme and formal wear section and a final interview question. The judges for the event were Dean of Students Ellis Hall, Professor Casey Hayes and two FC Kelly Marcelo: The Franklin ZTA alumnae, Keri LeBeau and Emily Jones. Sophomore Melissa Kerfoot headed Senior Dominique Boyd answers a question as senior Aaron Blair and junior Joey Green emcee the event, and junior Joey Green (top left) and freshman Jackson Schafer sings (bottom) during Zeta Tau Alpha’s Big Man on Campus philanthropy event Tuesday night in the Branigin Room. Schafer won the title, and junior and senior Aaron Blair emceed. Eli Curry, last year’s winner, presented him with a sash (top right) at the end of the event.
This year, Big Man on Campus included a social media aspect, straying from last year’s event. Kerfoot urged students to use the #bmoc2013 hash tag and individualized hash tags for each contestant to get them more involved in the competition. Before the show, Kerfoot said she was excited to see how this year’s competition would go. “I can’t wait to see what it all looks like put together,” Kerfoot said. “And I can’t wait to see all the contestants and their hard work pay off.” Kerfoot said this year’s competition saw a better variety of contestants and was more focused on the sorority’s philanthropy. “This year we have a more well-rounded representation of groups involved,” she said. “There’s more focus on breast cancer awareness and how it hits home.” Junior Eli Curry won the title of Mr. BMOC last year as a sophomore representing Drama Club.
