Spring is just around the corner and summer classes are beginning to fill up.

But there is something different about classes this summer at Franklin College: the price tag.

Classes will now cost students $200 per credit hour, instead of $400. Housing will still cost $300 during each session.

The first session is June 1 through July 24, and the second session goes from July 6 to Aug. 5.

The cost for housing in between the end of the spring semester and beginning of session one will be $100 with the month of August set at $200.

“We noticed that the enrollment in summer classes at the college had really begun to decline in recent years,” said David Brailow, vice president of academic affairs and dean of the college.

But that does not mean that there will be fewer classes.

Brailow said he expects the same amount of classes to be offered.

He said Franklin just could not compete with the likes of Ivy Tech Community College when it came to class costs.

Now, Brailow said he thinks Franklin could have the upper

hand as students will now have professors that really care about what they are teaching and how the students are doing in class.

Senior Rosette Nkulu has taken summer classes at Franklin before and thought the options were limited during the time.

“I paid more than $2,500 just for 8 weeks of summer school,” Nkulu said. “There were not many options or fun classes either.”

That is something the college is hoping to offer more as time goes on.

“We want students to not only be able to take classes they are required to take, but to also take classes that they want to take,” Brailow said.

And with the lowering of the prices, the college is expecting – or at least hoping – enrollment for summer classes will go up.

Administration does not expect to see an immediate change but hope to see an increase as the years go by, Brailow said.

“I think that the addition of new classes would benefit and motivate students to learn more over the summer, especially now that the rate per credit hour has been reduced,” Nkulu said.

Nkulu said that taking summer classes offers some big benefits to students.

“This will allow you to not only graduate on time, but also to have a lighter load your senior year or opportunities to study abroad,” she said.

Sodexo Behind the Glass: Menu board inaccuracies

The college remodeled the dining area two years ago, adding five 46inch TV screens above each of the stations to serve as menu boards.

Food Services Director Les Petroff said this is an improvement over the 8.5 by 11 sheets of paper Sodexo previously used that somebody had to type up every day and that were hard to see if the line was very long.

“It’s obviously the newest technology,” Petroff said. “It’s just awful nice to have a 46-inch TV above each station so as you’re in line, you can look and see for nutritional reasons and for health reasons. It even lists-

some of the nutritional information such as sodium and calories.”

Melissa Harvey, Sodexo’s supervisor, said that all menus should be accessible via the Franklin College website and nutritional information via Sodexo’s website.

The program Sodexo uses to create the menu boards is called Scala, but sometimes it is the reason behind mistakes on the boards. Harvey said the screens take information from Scala, which takes the menu information from their web program.

“Sometimes that communication gets messed up in that area,” Harvey said.

Petroff said incorrect boards can also be a result of human error or a delay in Scala’s programing.

There is a box that has to be checked or unchecked in order to put menus up on the screens, and sometimes when the screen is flashing yesterday’s menu, it is due to human error.

Running out of items in specialty lines can also cause incorrect boards.

“Basically what’ll happen there is if they say ‘Uh oh, I don’t have enough of this,’ or we run out,” Petroff said.

“When you go to change it, it’s about a 15-minute delay. On fish days it’s been interesting. I guess because of Lent we’ve been going through so

much fish that we’re going from cod to pollock or whatever happens.”

Senior Taylor Thompson said she thinks there could be some improvements with Sodexo’s use of the boards for students and patrons of Sodexo who do not have unlimited meal swipes.

“I think that they should have put a small screen outside the area so that we could see what was being served without wasting our money and time only to find out you don’t want what is served,” Thompson said.

College searches for new cable contract to satisfy students

The college let its contract with the current cable provider expire.

Comcast will still provide cable for the remainder of the academic year, but the college is currently searching for a new contract that will begin next fall.

The college was in a contract with Comcast for the last 10 years, but opted out of an auto-renewal.

“We wanted to look at our options,” said Jacob Knight, director of residence life. “So there’s no guarantee that we’re leaving them, but we have opted out of the auto-renew part of the contract and we’re asking them to rebid.”

the student body is interested in and potentially higher quality picture.

“I feel like the selection is lacking a little bit, but it’s all right,” freshman Alaina May said. “I wish we would have BBC and HBO if we could add channels.”

Knight also said letting the current contract expire could force Comcast to provide a lower price and better deal for the college.

“We also hope that in doing so they will relook at us as a customer and offer us the best deal, especially knowing that they’re competing against other companies,” Knight said. “Maybe they might offer a better deal, because when we signed the contract there were no competi-

tors in the area for them. Now with other cable providers in the area we think that’s some leverage for us.”

The college anticipates having three bids – one from Comcast, and the other two from Metronet and Campus Televideo.

“A number of students and me myself would prefer to have potential high-definition cable, if not at least digital cable,” Knight said.

“We’re also considering or looking at offering a premium channel or something like that, but it’s also one of those things where we don’t want to save a bunch of money and then spend it all back on cable.”

Earlier this month Knight sent out an email with an attached survey

to help gauge what channels students like within the current package and what channels students would like to see added. Those answers will help Knight and the college determine which company would be best for the students.

“We hope it will cost less and at least on the bids we have gotten so far it will be less,” Knight said. “But it’s also how much do we add to our package. If anything, that might increase that. And that’s part of the reason why we sent out the cable survey to all students last week (March 5).”

Knight said the change in cable provider will not affect the price of room and board for students because that price is already set.

news Animals not allowed in residence halls due to student, animal safety

Although the college has rules restricting students from keeping pets in their dorms, some students break this rule.

The only pets allowed in residence halls are fish in tanks under one gallon, but some students are known to house hamsters, cats and even dogs in their dorms.

“It really comes down to people having allergies,” said Jacob Knight, director of residence life.

Having different types of pets require attention, hygiene care and shots, but fish don’t require intensive care, Knight said.

“It’s a low-maintenance pet,” Knight said. “It can’t get out, and it can’t cause any harm to any-

one, and I think that’s the important piece for us,” Knight said.

Having a dog or cat in a residence hall that is confined to a small area is not ideal “for the animal’s wellbeing” Knight said.

“If you have a hamster in its cage in your home, all it knows is that it’s in a cage,” sophomore Leah Jackson said. “It doesn’t care if it’s in a dorm room.” She said having small animals in a cage in a residence room is “the same thing” as having one at home.

Smaller animals may not require the same amount of space as a dog or cat would need, but “they come with other concerns as well,” Knight said.

Sophomore Cody Fenderman said he does not think Franklin College residence halls have a prob-

lem with animals in the halls and agrees that only fish should be allowed because “it would be bad to have a dog stuck in a room.”

Knight said finding an animal in a residence hall is not extremely common, but it does happen.

Senior and Resident Assistant Rosette Nkulu said she has not encountered any animals in the halls she has been in charge of. If she were to find an animal she said she would get in contact with her residence hall coordinator and inform him or her that there may be an animal running around. The coordinator would also have to determine who was housing that animal.

When a situation occurs where a resident is caught with an animal

in their room, he or she has to donate the pet to an animal shelter or take it back home, then they would have to go through the campus judicial process, Knight said.

“They would meet with a staff member of the college and would have to talk about why they wanted to violate the college policy and explain themselves,” Knight said.

“We will remind them of the college policy, answer any of their questions and provide them with sanctions that are appropriate to the situation.”

Knight said the consequences could be community service, paying a fine or writing a reflection paper. Depending on the situation, the animal found and the student’s judicial history will determine their consequence.

College welcomes Norwegian student to campus for study abroad program

For the first time in years, the college has welcomed a Norwegian student to Franklin College.

Herman Tangen was able to apply to Franklin because of a long-standing partnership that Franklin has with his home university, Telemark University in Norway.

At Telemark University there are several different exchange programs that Tangen could have chosen from, but he ultimately picked Franklin to study abroad.

“It was a small campus, and there were no Norwegians there,” Tangen said.

Tangen will be able to satisfy credits here he needs for his major, international marketing.

The Norway Program is not a new program at the college: Franklin has had a 15-year partnership with Telemark University. Students are told about the option of traveling to Norway, but many do not take advantage of the option.

If they travel to Norway, students need to be aware that they are not in an exchange program. With the

Norway program, students will be going to the country by themselves.

Students apart of the program would be attending Telemark University. The college’s atmosphere is very similar to Franklin College.

There are about 5,500 students at Telemark University. Franklin students would get to choose between three different campuses that each offer a variety of courses.

Most of the time students are set up in apartment style living, similar to Johnson-Dietz. These apartments usually have a kitchen, living area, and two or three bedrooms. There are typically three or four other people living in the apartment.

It is not a requirement to speak Norwegian in order to enroll in the program. Most Norwegians start learning English at a very young age and therefore speak English very well.

The Office of Global Education does advise that interested students take a history or culture class before going.

For students on the fence about traveling to Norway due to financial problems Jenny Catalidi, director of global education, has words of advice.

“The Norway program is a very affordable option,” Cataldi said. “And there are many scholarship options students do not always take advantage of.”

The college’s website administrator is finishing her first year as the college’s web strategy expert by looking for new features to meet student demands.

Ann Kish, a 20-year veteran of web design and online brand strategy, is the main administrator of the college’s official website. Although 130 people on campus have the capability to edit portions of the website, Kish’s main priorities as the website administrator are to provide direction for the website and promote the college’s brand through digital communications in a mission-focused way.

“A brand exists for an institution whether you like it or not,” Kish said. “That’s the truth of who you are and what is communicated. …

What we want to do is make sure that we are asserting what is best about the college to others and to ourselves. We want to make sure that the way it looks and sounds and works agrees with those qualities.”

One of the main components of Kish’s role is to guide the way the site looks and its navigation features in regards to prospective students, current students and their families, donors, alumni and the community.

She addresses problems with the site, makes sure information is easily accessible and ensures that people will feel “engaged and energized” when using the site, Kish said.

In order to make sure that Franklin College is competitive in regards to other colleges, Kish said the marketing department researches other school’s websites and compares their content and features to Franklin’s to better understand other higher-education practices.

Kish stresses the importance of an updated and manageable website for the productivity of the college.

“In 20 years of experience, people still seem to not understand that the site is their business,” Kish said. “It doesn’t just represent the college – it is the college.

Website Administrator Ann Kish, who is finishing up her first year in this position, ensures that the college’s website remains competitive and up-to-date.

The website consists of both posts and pages. The posts are the news releases and informational pieces that appear on the home page of the website. The pages are the other portions of the website that aren’t updated as often as the posts, which Kish said could be updated almost hourly.

For the academic aspects of the site, each department’s faculty has control over the content on their pages. Kish said that some departments utilize their pages more fully than others, such as science, kinesiology and fine arts. Kish is working with some departments in order for them to expand their pages and engage more prospective students.

“Ultimately, departments are in charge of their own,” Kish said.

“If a department doesn’t stay very proactive, it is not going to be good

for the health of the school. If a department doesn’t keep their site current, it could impact enrollment numbers for the department.”

In order to keep up with fast-paced advancements in technology, Kish is constantly trying to establish new features to cater to the needs of the site’s users. For example, this week, the website is doing a trial run for a chat feature on the site.

This chat feature allows users to immediately speak with a website administrator about inquiries or concerns on the site. The chat box is located in the lower right hand corner of the screen and flows throughout the site to the different pages.

Kish said this feature doesn’t cost much to maintain and will be a great asset to the website’s manageability.

However, one student said she thinks that some of these advanced features aren’t entirely necessary to the website.

Junior Ashley Smith said that she does not like the change to the website compared to the old structure prior to the 2013 launch of the current website structure.

Smith said specifically that she sometimes has trouble with finding certain information for current students like herself.

“It’s a little confusing compared to how it used to be,” Smith said.

“There’s a lot of little extra things, and sometimes it’s too much. It could be a little more user-friendly for students.”

FC in History: 1966 brings a string of ‘panty raids’

If you thought campus was crazy now, get this: In the spring of 1966, approximately 100 male Franklin College students executed a panty raid on Elsey Hall, an all girl’s dorm at the time.

The boys—who had a goal of stealing panties and causing commotion—broke in a side door and entered some of the girls’ bedrooms.

They were reportedly running around the building for 15 minutes— some wearing stocking masks—before the dean at the time, Dwight Klinck, and Franklin Police showed.

The president, who was away at a convention, didn’t respond.

Five students, two seniors and three freshmen, were suspended for the rest of the year for taking part in the raid and for being in a girls’ dorm past curfew.

Students responded in a big way.

Shortly after the suspension was announced, a small group of students burned a stuffed look-a-like dummy of the dean from the flagpole in the center of campus.

They deemed the suspension unfair, as only five of the nearly 100 students involved were in trouble.

The night after the burning, about 250 students—almost two-thirds of the student body—marched to the downtown courthouse in a torchlight parade. The senior student council president led the march.

A sophomore student acted as a spokesperson for the body, standing on the top of a car downtown and criticizing the dean for his decision.

According to an April 1966 article in The Franklin, the students banded together at the march and prepared a list of grievances for the dean. He didn’t budge.

In the following days, frustrated male students tried to orchestrate panty raids. A writer for The Franklin called the raids “another failure,” although the men were successful in grabbing a few unmentionables before dorm staff quickly put down the uprising.

A second letter, written by a student committee, was delivered to the college’s president at the time, Wesley N. Haines, after his early return from the convention later that week.

The letter resulted in successfully reinstating four of the five the students.

One student violated his disciplinary probation and was not reinstated.

The reinstated students remained on disciplinary probation for the rest of the year. The three freshman students were to remain on probation for the next year, too.

But the news doesn’t stop there.

At a meeting the same day as the reinstatement, Klinck suffered from a stroke.

In the April 9, 1966 edition of The Franklin Star, a local newspaper, it is reported “Klinck remained in critical condition at Methodist Hospital after suffering an apparently massive stroke. … The stroke is said to have been caused by the tremendous amount of stress the dean had been under during the President’s leave.”

The panty raid trend hit Franklin a little later than the rest of the nation. The trend dates back to 1949, when pranksters at Augustana College in Illinois made headlines in the Chicago Tribune, Time Magazine and the New York Times.

None of the pranksters were charged.

Katie Burpo, lecturer of English, first went abroad for an extended period of time when she was a sophomore at DePauw University.

The trip to Rome and Paris inspired Burpo to change her major to art history, as well as aspire to reach a new life goal.

“I decided on that trip that it would be my dream to someday become a professor and take students abroad so that I could be a part of that experience, which is so transformative and amazing,” Burpo said.

Burpo said the trip was beneficial to her because professors let students make their own way on the trip.

“It was a great experience because they expected us to take care of ourselves to an extent, so we wandered the city and ate all the food and saw the sights,” Burpo said.

Her trip as a sophomore was not the only one she took during her college career. The first trip she took empowered her to later spend a month in Spain, Italy and France with her then boyfriend, now husband. Burpo said she got engaged on that trip.

She went for a third time during grad school to study with one of her favorite writers in Prague.

Burpo was asked last minute to go on the Winter Term trip to France this January.

“I love travel,” Burpo said. “And it’s so expensive, and finding the time and the opportunity and the resources to go abroad is so difficult sometimes, so when I was given the opportunity I had to think of it for all of about two seconds.”

Burpo said she thinks the Winter Term length is perfect for students.

“I think an experience like Winter Term is ideal because the students are given the freedom and are expected to take care of themselves and take responsibility for the experience,” Burpo said. “But they’re also guided by the professors.

So it’s kind of the best of both worlds.”

Missing plane should not be forgotten We’ve just passed the one-year mark of the disappearance of Malaysian Airlines Flight 370, but that anniversary passed by without much acknowledgement.

Ever since the plane seemingly disappeared into thin air last March, the world has been fascinated with how a plane could go missing. The multiple-month search for the remains of either the plane or its passengers turned up virtually nothing, and soon the news appeal of the missing plane faded.

But the memory of that day has not faded from the minds of those whose family members were aboard that flight. Parents who lost children, husbands who lost wives, children who lost moms and dads; the sting of that mysterious day is still fresh in the minds of those most closely affected.

But much of the world is starting to forget.

It’s natural. When we don’t hear about something often, it falls into the recesses of our minds. But even if we don’t think about those missing people all the time, we cannot forget them completely.

If we stop talking about MH370, it’s as if we’re giving up on the families still waiting on word about their loved ones. When we stop caring about that plane, we’re essentially saying, “Sorry for your loss, but it’s time for you to move on now.”

Though we cannot comprehend the pain those people must be going through, we have to show them that they have worldwide support. The disappearance of Flight 370 was a world tragedy, and we should not dismiss it so easily.

Disregarding impact, history of slurs perpetuates harm, marginalization Too often the response to someone telling us we “can’t” say a certain word or phrase is “it’s just a word, it doesn’t matter.” But is that really the case?

If you were asked to make a list of words that you “shouldn’t” say, it wouldn’t be difficult. Go ahead, think of some right now.

As these words pop into your head, some may be thinking they are “just words.” If you are, congratulations, you are probably privileged enough to ignore the violent, oppressive and damaging history of many of these words.

Let’s start with an obvious example, like the “n-word.” You shouldn’t say any form of this word if you are not black. Full stop. Before someone cries that making this statement is somehow “unfair,” let’s think about it for a moment. This word was created by white people (white slave owners, to be specific) in the 1800s as a way to demean and separate themselves from the black slaves, who were, as we all know, barely accepted as human beings. Today, some, though not all, black people choose to reclaim or reappropriate the term as a way of empowering themselves or injecting their own power into it. Others who are black choose not to say it because of the history of pain and violence behind it, and that’s fine, too.

What’s not fine is when a white person decides to say it. What happens then is that the white supremacist foundation behind the word is reinforced and replicated, regardless of the intent. If you choose to ignore years of violence and hatred by writing it off as “just a word,” well, that’s on you. Enjoy the privi-

lege you have to be able to choose to ignore these things. But also know that you don’t get to create or determine the meaning of a word just because you don’t like its history or because it makes you feel cool.

That goes for any slur, be it racial or gendered or anything else.

Another commonly used one is the “r-word,” which is used to demean people with disabilities.

“Well, I don’t mean it that way. It just means ‘stupid’ or something.”

Explain that to the developmentally disabled person who was bullied in high school who just heard you say it.

Replacing “stupid” or a similar word with the “r-word” insinuates that you would just as soon call someone who, back in the day, would have been medically considered “retarded” the same thing.

Your intent is practically invalid. It’s the impact that matters.

Even with all that being said, people will continue to fight for their right to say whatever they want. Freedom of speech and all that, sure. And while freedom of speech may grant you the right to say anything, it does not mean that you should say everything. It also doesn’t mean that you are exempt from any consequence or criticism in response to what you say.

More than that, though, just because you can say something, doesn’t mean you should want to.

You can spew all the slurs you want and likely get away with it.

But why would you want to? Why would you want any part in perpetuating harm, discrimination and belittlement towards any kind of person? Some will roll their eyes at the suggestion of “political correct-

Our Position: The Franklin editorial board believes students should be considerate of the meanings and impact of the words they use. ness,” but there’s less harm in being “politically correct” than in being deliberately racist, sexist, ableist, and the like. We can and should be better.

Students of Franklin College, we have the power to make a difference. Think about the impact of your words. Don’t be afraid to speak out when someone says something you think is offensive or harmful, and be honest in how you do so. And if someone comments on your use of one of these words, take a second to stop and reflect before getting defensive. We all slip up, and no one is impervious to being wrong.

Additionally, please don’t ask, “what about ‘cracker’?” Calling a white person “cracker” will never be oppressive. Is it nice? No. But there’s a big difference between being systematically oppressed and having your feelings hurt.

As a little kid, you never want to leave home. And your parents are the world.

When you reach middle school, you never want to be home and your parents are totes the lamest and worse human specimens to ever exist.

And as a college student, you get homesick and kicked down by a life a little bit when you try to be independent for the first time.

But upon graduation, society has such a negative connotation on moving back in with the folks. And I don’t really understand why.

Obviously, you have to give up some freedoms you were accustomed to in college. You will probably have to help do the dishes and do your own laundry, which you should have been doing the last four years of college anyway.

But you don’t have to pay rent. Rent is expensive. Rent is really expensive when you’re broke and starting a new low-level job for $8 an hour if you’re lucky.

Also, because your parents have got this whole surviving in the real world thing down, they have food in the house. Guess what else is expensive? Yup, food.

It may be an adjustment to revert back to your kid bedroom and Scooby Doo sheets along with your parent’s watchful eye, but with the money you’re saving, I think you can deal for a little while.

And the real world is hard, way harder than MTV’s “Real World” makes it look. What’s so wrong with having your biggest support system there for you while you take your first real strides being a big kid?

For most of us, going away to college is the first real taste of freedom from our parents: You can eat what you want, sleep when you want, watch what you want and go out when you want.

My first semester living alone was weird. I remember thinking, “Oh, I need to tell somebody that I’m going to Wal-Mart.” It probably took me the whole semester to get out of that mindset.

So, going back home now is weird. It’s like getting into a time capsule that takes me back to being 16 again: my teenage bedroom, the town I went to high school in and the rules that haven’t changed for me since I first got my driver’s license.

I’m going to be 22 when I graduate, not 16, and I personally don’t think any amount of money I’m saving could convince me to go back to that setting.

I love my parents, but we can’t, and shouldn’t live together with me as an adult. There’s an important divide that happens when you go away to college that allows you to finally start becoming friend with your parents and moving back in would effectively ruin that.

It’ll be a financial strain, but ultimately, I think not moving back in with my parents when I graduate next year will help keep our relationship healthy.

For a small liberal arts school, Franklin College has a lot going on.

Ever since I was a freshman forever ago (or so it feels like), I’ve had opportunities presented to me. But there was a catch: I had to act on them.

Some I did without question, and some I skipped. But what I realize now is that most opportunities were geared to help me become a better, more hirable liberal arts graduate.

I attended a play with a leadership class, a documentary at the Indianapolis Museum of Art for my web design class and a seminar for collegians at St. Jude Children Research Hospital. And these are only a few of the opportunities I have acted upon since coming to Franklin.

On the other hand, I’ve missed some due to other commitments or a lack of understanding of their potential importance. For example, I wish I’d gone to more career services events about resume writing, because resumes are hard. But I have attended other professional development events like etiquette dinners and networking outings.

The thing is, many students don’t want to do much outside of homework and activities they are personally involved in. I get that. I get tired, too, but I know that I may never get chances like these again.

So that’s what I did: I took the chances and opportunities that I could manage within my schedule. Now, I can tell everyone from students to professors to future employers that I invested more in my education. And most importantly, I loved it.

Colts all in for next season The only trophy that teams in the NFL want to win is the heralded Vincent Lombardi trophy. A victory in free agency during March is not the one that matters the most, but it is the first step towards a Super Bowl title.

General Manager Ryan Grigson and the Indianapolis Colts are off to a solid start. After signing free agent veterans such as Andre Johnson, Frank Gore, Todd Herremans, Trent Cole and Kendall Langford, the Colts and Grigson deserve a pat on the back.

Gore, 32, is a running back the Colts have been searching for since the Edgerrin James era ended.

Gore is durable and reliable. He hasn’t missed a game since 2010.

During his time with the San Francisco 49ers, the veteran rushed for 1,000 yards in eight of the last nine seasons. The Colts haven’t had a 1,000-yard rusher since 2007.

Johnson, 33, fills the hole the Colts lost when they released future Hall of Famer Reggie Wayne. The 6-3, 230-pound All-Pro receiver has been to seven Pro Bowls, has 1,012 catches and 13,597 yards. All of those accomplishments have been without a quarterback nowhere near comparable to Andrew Luck.

Cole is a big risk, but fills the void of a pass-rusher on the opposite side of Robert Mathis. The veteran pass-rusher told the Indianapolis Star that he has a lot left in him.

I believe in him. Cole has tallied 85.5 sacks over his tenure.

With the return of Mathis, and the new signings, the Colts further secures themselves as a team that should be reckoned with in the NFL in 2015. The Colts are in Super-Bowl-or-bust mode.

The Colts got older, yes. But by getting older, the Colts just put all their chips in the middle for a Super Bowl run in the 2015-16 season.

Women’s lacrosse adjusting to first varsity season

The women’s lacrosse team has taken to the field four times in its inaugural varsity season.

They have yet to win a game in the program’s short history, but it is not for a lack of effort.

The team has improved each game, and the scores are showing. In almost every game they have scored more goals than they did in the last.

This season also marks another first – the first season that Stephanie Eft is at the head coaching position.

Last season, she was an assistant coach under Veronica Mitchell, who has since stepped into an assistant role.

But Eft does have previous head coaching experience.

She has been the head coach at North Central High School since 2012 after being an assistant coach at Bishop Chatard High School from 2010 to 2012.

During her time as a player, she was a three-year team captain and four-year varsity letter winner at Hamilton Southeastern High School

before playing one season at Eastern University in Pennsylvania.

“Coach Steph has really transformed our team,” sophomore Carley Campbell said. “Honestly, I have never seen a group of girls learn the game so fast. She really brought us all together and pushed us to be better – even as a first-year varsity team.”

Campbell said the first year has basically been going as expected.

“We may not be winning every game, but we are giving it our all,” Campbell said. “As a first-year team with only a few really experienced girls, I am amazed with the progress that we have made. The scoreboard may not show it, but if you compare our first game to our most recent one, you will see how much we have changed.”

Senior Audrey Wilson agrees.

“We are working hard to improve each day at compete at this level,” Wilson said.

She said because it is the team’s first year, there has been more commitment from players.

“I have never been on such a selfless team before, and I absolutely love it,” Wilson said. “We understand that things are going to be tough, but that does not stop us from having fun and enjoying the game.”

The team has plenty of room for improvement, especially when it comes to transitions, Wilson said.

“We have been cooped up a lot, and a lot of girls are learning the differences in transitions across the field,” she said. “If we make a few adjustments there and on attack, we could really change our game.”

The team has a pair of home games this weekend as it faces Thomas Moore at 1 p.m. Saturday and Mt. St. Joseph at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The stretch of home games will conclude Tuesday as the team plays Hanover at 7 p.m.

sports Men’s golf prepares to kick off spring season

The men’s golf team will kick off its spring season at the Mount St. Joseph Invitational in Cincinnati, Ohio.

Coach Roger Lundy said he thinks this weekend is the perfect opportunity for the Grizzlies to bond and get better together as a team. “(I hope) we get better each day on the way to the conference championship.” Lundy said. “I hope the weather is good, and we have fun playing.”

This is the first invitational for the Grizzlies since the fall season in October. The team concluded its fall season by winning the Wabash Invitational with four top-eight finishers, led by sophomore Jack Knue and senior Chris Arnold.

After the October Wabash Invitational, Knue was named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference player of the week.

Knue is looking forward to the season and thinks the team has high potential for what lies ahead.

“I’m excited for the upcoming season,” Knue said. “I think this weekend’s invitational at Mount will be a good opportunity for us to get off to a good start.”

Knue said he thinks the spring season is a little tenser than the fall because of the conference tournament.

“With our conference tournament being in the spring, the spring season always seems to bring a little

more excitement and demand a little more focus,” Knue said.

Sophomore Sam Pollock said the biggest threats to the Grizzlies this upcoming season are Transylvania University and Mount St. Joseph.

“As always, the HCAC is led by Transy and MSJ,” Pollock said. “They are both highly ranked in national polls throughout the season.”

Pollock has high hopes for Franklin.

“We believe we can contend with them,” Pollock said. “At times (we) have contended with them in the past.”

The team tees off at 10 a.m. on Saturday. The team will continue play with a tee time of 9 a.m. Sunday.

Men’s baseball set to open conference play this weekend

The men’s baseball team will kick off conference play Friday against Bluffton University.

The team continues play Saturday with a double-header against Bluffton. Franklin finishes the weekend with another double-header on Sunday. The team will play St. Francis in a non-conference game on Sunday.

So far the team is 5-5 on the season. The team is also struggling at home going 1-3.

Senior Tyler Ison said he knows the team is capable of turning things around quickly heading into conference play.

“Early on this season our bats have been dead,” Ison said. “We haven’t put up as many runs as we usually do and we haven’t got the timely hits that we need to have big innings. I think once we get our bats woken up and we start getting those timely hits, we will be a very tough team to compete with.”

He also said the start of the season will prove very helpful for the team.

“I think that the games that we have played so far early on this

season have helped us mentally prepare for what we need to accomplish,” Ison said. “These games have allowed us to get some jitters out and build up some confidence as we embark on conference play.”

In the preseason polls Franklin was selected to finish fourth in the conference. Manchester University was selected as the early favorite. Rose-Hulman and Anderson were close in points but come in at second and third respectively.

Ison said he believes that Franklin is the best team in the conference. He said part of that is the depth the team has in the roster.

“I believe our team has the chance to do something special this year,” Ison said. “We have depth everywhere in the lineup, where we haven’t in previous years. I strongly believe that we are the best team in the conference and have a very good chance at winning conference if we play the way we are capable of playing and execute when we need to.”

At this point in the season, Franklin sits in eighth place in

the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference. Seventh place is Bluffton with a 7-5 record.

“Our team has a very strong bond,” Ison said. “We push each other and hold each other accountable for standards and goals that we have. Our hard work and effort off the field has helped us build strong team chemistry that is vital for winning championships.”

“I think that the games that we have played so far early on this season have helped us mentally prepare for what we need to accomplish.”
