Inaugural year brings changes New president engages in college community By Leigh Durphey

The inaugural year for the college’s 16th president means a lot of listening, engagement and blue and gold attire. Thomas J. Minar, who was named as the college’s new president eight months after former president Jay Moseley announced his retirement in May 2014, said he wants to hear community opinions about the college’s future. “As a new president in a substantial community, I’m at a listening point,” Minar said. “I’m engaging in a listening tour essentially—which we’ve themed ‘thinking forward’—just to think forward about the college and to seek people’s thoughts on the development of a common vision for the future of Franklin College. The strategic planning process will be focused on just that and honing in on what that vision is.” Minar officially began his role as president July 1, and since then, he has quickly immersed himself in the college’s atmosphere in what he calls a “24-hour job.” He’s spent a lot of this time meeting and getting to know students. “The interactions with students¬—which are often really very short—are really wonderful, which is sort of a reminder of why we do what we do,” Minar said. Senior Danielle Faczan said she met Minar a week ago at Faught Stadium at the football game.

“He was really nice,” she said. “He was friendly. He had a good sense of humor, and he’s easy to talk to.” Because Faczan was in Uganda when Minar held meet and greets with the students, she said she hopes there are more of those events in the future so she can get to know the new president better. As a first year president, Minar said there are many areas he needs to focus on, but some of his principle concentrations will be on alumni relations and branding the college. Minar already met with alumni in the region and in his former home near Washington, D.C. He also spoke with alumni around the country electronically. “Right now, alumni are making a difference to me in helping me understand the importance of this college,” he said. “Down the road, I think the question is, ‘how do we bring more alumni even closer to the college? How do we engage them in the life of the college? How do we engage them in the students? How do we help alumni make a difference in your lives just the way your faculty do?’” Minar will work closely with the alumni engagement staff and faculty to answer these questions and develop a plan of action.
