Franklin College students and staff will see nine new faces in Student Congress this year. On Tuesday, 20 percent of the student body voted for three new freshman Student Congress representatives and a new Hoover-Cline representative. Additionally, two new sophomore representatives, a new commuter representative and two new at-large campus representatives are joining Student Congress this year. The two at-large campus positions were added to the ballot due to what a Student Congress email called “unforeseen vacancies.” The elected representatives were announced via email on Wednesday afternoon after each
candidate accepted their positions earlier that morning. Freshmen Kurt Kurman, Erica Moore and Holly Short were elected 2015-2016 Student Congress freshman representatives. “When I was notified that I was elected for the position, I was so happy,” Short said. “Student Congress was the one club I really wanted to be a part of in college. To be informed that I would be able to continue doing what I loved most about high school was so satisfying.” Junior Kelsey Richardson took the vacant Hoover-Cline representative position. Sophomore Seth Eckert holds the role as commuter representative.
Sophomores Jessica Baker and Samantha Gutierrez were named sophomore class representatives. Lastly, the at-large representatives are freshman Logan Thompson and sophomore Dean Elrod. At her former high school in Elwood, Indiana, Short was named class president for three consecutive years. She said she was an active member of student council in middle and high school. “As a freshman representative, I want to be a link between the students and faculty,” Short said. “Additionally, I plan to search for opinions from freshmen on what they like about Franklin and any improvements they think can be made.”
Richardson said she has similar plans as the new Hoover-Cline residence hall representative. Richardson, a mentor for College Mentors for Kids and a Greek Life Rho Gamma, said she enjoys being involved on campus and looks forward to being involved in Student Congress. “Student Congress is directly involved with the student body, different from other campus organizations I’m involved in,” Richardson said. “Franklin has provided me with a lot of opportunities for personal, professional growth. I figured [becoming a representative] would allow me to grow in these ways while being a voice for students.”
