THE HOYA
Global Fashion Georgetown University’s campus buzzes with international energy, as it hosts students and faculty from 130 countries. This vigor manifests itself through student showcases like Rangila and Reventón, academic pursuits in the SFS and the abundance of languages spoken and taught on campus. In this issue, we celebrate brands and designers inspired by their home countries. We partnered with three local brands and boutiques to showcase the rich designs and creativity of these cultures. Within these pages is a diversity of fashions from around the world. Just like Georgetown’s campus, these designs abound with international energy and reflect the vibrancy of cultures around the globe. The distressed three-quarter length pants with a red flannel and my wornout Converse artistically represent the resilient aspects of my personality. It speaks to the way that I take what I have, despite being on the verge of falling apart, and turn it into something good.
I’ve always been one to prefer being overdressed to underdressed, wearing skirts, blazers, dresses and heels to a high school where sweatpants or hoodies were the norm. Growing up on classic Hollywood films, my earliest style icons were Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn and my mom, all of which is reflected in my sartorial decisions. I have always loved clothes and like to reflect that passion on every wardrobe choice I make.

I have been exposed to French language and culture all my life. I spend most of my summers in Paris, and, as a child, my parents often read French children’s books to me, including a series called “Martine.” Since Martine is the French translation of my name [Martina], I grew particularly attached to the books, as shown by the shirt in my outfit. I paired the top with a dark pair of highwaisted jeans and a white pair of sneakers. I love taking walks, so comfortable shoes are a must!
My grandmother is always my style inspiration; she chose these jeans [from a Spanish clothing company called Desigual] and b ought me these shoes [from Banana Republic]. My shirt represents my identity as a woman from a community that’s underrepresented in my fields [science and healthcare]. It inspires me to continue being a bada-while representing the language and culture that I love despite the challenges faced by our community.
