THE HOYA

In the early 1900s, Coco Chanel revolutionized women’s fashion, incorporating and normalizing traditionally masculine elements. For its spring ’16 women’s line, Louis Vuitton selected Jaden Smith as its muse. Last year, fast-fashion brand Zara debuted its “Ungendered” line, featuring unisex clothing. While admirably making non-binary options available to a wider audience, Zara came under fire for selling only unimaginative versions of clothes traditionally deemed masculine, like sweatpants and t-shirts.These aspects of style aren’t supposed to be bland or just trends in the world of fashion — they are long-standing institutions of queer style aesthetics and reflect our society’s evolving views of gender. Clothes should not be limited by gender, just as people should not be limited by their clothes. In this spring fashion issue, we wanted to demonstrate the versatile and variable nature of clothes. At the end of the day, fashion should be a reflection of who you are and who you want to be — let’s celebrate that. To see more photos, visit thehoya.com and thirtyseventhgu.com.
