2013년 한국국제교류재단 봄 정기음악회가 4월 17일 저녁 8시 금호아트홀에 서 개최됩니다. 한-오스트리아 수교 50주년을 기념하여 개최되는 이번 음악 회는 클래식의 본고장인 오스트리아 연주자들과 한국인 연주자의 협연무대로 꾸며집니다. 오스트리아 리히텐탈 트리오의 한국계 피아니스트 디아네 바알, 바이올리니스트 사스키아 록첵과 한국의 첼리스트 김민지가 베토벤, 모차르 트, 멘델스존 등의 곡을 연주할 예정입니다. 한국과 오스트리아의 젊은 연주 자 3인이 꾸미는 이번 공연은 음악을 통해 양국 간 우정과 화합을 다지는 기회 가 될 것입니다.

This Apr 17 at 8 pm, the Korea Foundation’s Spring Concert will be taking place at Kumho Art Hall. The event will bring together musicians from Korea and Austria – the homeland of classical music – to commemorate 50 years of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Korean-born pianist Dianne Baar of Austria’s Lichtental Trio, violinist Saskia Roczek, and Korean cellist Minji Kim are scheduled to perform pieces by Beethoven, Mozart, Mendelssohn, and more. This international trio’s performance is sure to be a great occasion for bringing Korea and Austria closer together through music.

세계의 축제장식

전 세계 곳곳에서 일 년 내내 벌어지는 다양한 축제의 모습을 보여주는 전시가 주한 대사부인회 주최로 4월 3일부터 6일까지 KF문화센터 갤러리에서 개최됩니다. 이번 전시에서는 화려한 의상, 장인의 손길이 깃든 공예품, 악기, 음식 문화 등 각 지역 의 문화 예술이 다양한 지역 축제 및 종교행사와 어우러져 만들어진 축제장식을 소 개합니다. 브라질 카니발, 이탈리아 베니스 카니발 등 우리에게 익숙한 축제뿐 아니라, 산 자 가 죽은 자를 초대해 삶을 기념하는 멕시코의 죽은 자의 날과 같은 이색적인 축제 도 소개합니다. 많은 나라에서 가장 중요한 축제로 여기는 결혼식과 추수감사절을 비롯해 가톨릭, 개신교, 동방정교회의 최대 축일인 크리스마스와 부활절, 인도의 빛 축제 디파발리, 라마단 기간의 저녁식사인 터키의 이프타, 스리랑카의 석가탄신 일 웨삭, 스페인의 공현제, 세르비아의 슬라바 등 총 28개국의 주한대사부인들이 본국을 대표하는 축제장식을 선발했습니다.

본 전시에는 알제리, 브라질, 이집트, 엘살바도르, 인도, 아일랜드, 이탈리아, 케 냐, 쿠웨이트, 말레이시아, 멕시코, 모로코, 오만, 파키스탄, 파라과이, 폴란드, 포르투갈, 루마니아, 러시아, 르완다, 세르비아, 슬로바키아, 스페인, 스리랑카, 튀니지, 터키, 영국, 미국(알파벳순)이 참여합니다.

Celebrations of national festivals take place around the world all year round. To show the nature of these festivities, the Spouses of the Ambassadors in South Korea will hold an exhibition Festive Decorations Around the World at the KF Cultural Center Gallery from Apr 3 to 6. A myriad of cultural and artistic manifestations associated with local, religious and secular festivals in the form of amazingly rich and colorful vestments, skillfully crafted objects and structures, musical instruments, delightful gastronomy and others will be shown. The exhibition not only presents familiar festivals like Carnival of Brazil and Carnival of Venice of Italy but also introduces unique the Day of the Dead which shows how Mexican celebrates life by building Altars for the Dead combining Aztec and Hispanic characteristics, where the living welcomes the souls of the dead. In many countries, weddings are considered very important ceremonial events. Thanksgiving festivals are usually associated with harvest season and are a time for joyful family reunion. Christmas and Easter are the most important events in the Christian calendar. Following Orthodox Christian tradition, Romania and Russia consider Easter as a very important holiday. India’s Deepavali or Festival of Lights, Turkey’s fast–breaking dinner in Ramadan, Sri Lanka’s Vesak, commemorating the birth of Buddha, Spain’s Epiphany and Serbia’s Orthodox Christian custom of honoring a patron saint, Slava will also be presented. The 28 countries participating in this exhibition are: Algeria, Brazil, Egypt, El Salvador, India, Ireland, Italy, Kenya, Kuwait, Malaysia, Mexico, Morocco, Oman, Pakistan, Paraguay, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Rwanda, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Sri Lanka, Tunisia, Turkey, United Kingdom and United States of America.

바로크, 로코코 이야기

2013 Cultural Lecture Series I: Baroque & Rococo KF문화센터는 ‘바로크, 로코코’를 주제로 서구문명사에서 국제교류가 활발했던 17~18세기 유럽의 사회·건축·예술 등을 다루는 세계문화 강좌를 개최합니다. KF 문화센터는 2006년부터 우리 국민의 다문화 이해를 돕고자 <이슬람 문화> 강좌를 시작으로 <월드뮤직>, <세계문화유산>, <르네상스 이야기> 등 세계의 역사와 문화 를 지역별, 시대별, 문화권별로 나누어 진행해 왔습니다. 이번 강좌는 작년 <지중 해 이야기>에 이어 유럽의 문화와 역사를 좀 더 넓게 이해할 수 있는 좋은 기회가 될 것입니다.

The KF Cultural Center is hosting a lecture series on the Baroque and Rococo periods, with talks on European society, architecture, and art during the 17th and 18th centuries, an especially rich period for exchange in the West. Since 2006, KFCC has been working to promote the Korean public’s understanding of world culture through lectures in which experts share their knowledge on various areas of world history, culture, and art. Topics in the past have included Islamic culture, world music, world cultural heritage, and the Renaissance. This latest event, which follows last year’s letcture series “Mediterranean Story,” is a wonderful chance to broaden your horizons on European culture and history. 일시 Date

한국국제교류재단이 지원하는 《한국현대디자인전-KOREA POWER》가 4월 26일부 터 8월 25일까지 독일 프랑크푸르트 실용예술박물관에서 개최됩니다. ‘역사적 개 요’, ‘현대의 섬들’, ‘변화하는 정체성’ 총 3개의 테마로 구성된 이번 전시는 한국 근현대 산업디자인 제품들과 광고, 포스터, 서적 등 그래픽 아트를 연대순으로 전 시해 ‘한국의 정체성’을 담아낼 예정입니다. 20세기 초부터 현재까지 한국의 정체 성이 발현되고 변화된 양상을 살펴보는 좋은 계기가 될 것입니다. 특히 이번 전시 는 2012년 6월 27일부터 9월 9일까지 재단이 주최한 《독일박물관 소장 한국유물 특별순회전》의 후속 연계전시로, 지난 전시가 독일 대중에게 신라에서 조선까지 한국의 전통적인 모습을 소개했다면, 금번에는 근현대 한국의 역동적인 모습을 보 여줄 수 있을 것입니다. 전시와 더불어 관련 공연 및 강좌가 마련돼 현지인들에게 한국의 다양한 면모를 선보입니다.

The KOREA POWER exhibition will be taking place from Apr 26 to Aug 25 at the Museum of Applied Art in Frankfurt, Germany, with support from the Korea Foundation. Focusing on three themes–“Historic Overview,” “Islands of Contemporary,” and “Changing Identities”– it captures Korean identity through a chronicle of the country’s modern industrial design, including products, advertisements, posters, books, and more. This is a great opportunity to learn how Korean identity has been expressed and transformed since the early 20th century. It is also a follow-up to KF’s 2012 special touring exhibition Korea Rediscovered–Treasures from German Collections (June 27–Sept 9, 2012). While the focus for that exhibition was on introducing examples of Korean tradition from the Silla to Joseon eras to the German public, the latest offers a glimpse at a more dynamic modern and contemporary environment. Performances and lectures will also be available to help German visitors discover the diversity of Korea.

The Consuls Ball of the United Nations Association of Greater Boston will be organized on Apr 26 featuring a special recognition of Korea. This event selects a different country every year and shares its performing arts, food, costumes, and more. Attendees include local delegation members in the Boston area and major figures from the political, economic, cultural, artistic, and academic communities. Inviting Overseas Scholars & Intellectuals 한국국제교류재단은 4월 22일~27일 5박 6일 동안 15개국 22명의 해외석학, 학계 해외인사를 초청합니다. 이번 방한일정 동안 초청 인사들은 주요 대학, 한국교육개발 원, 국립국제교육원 등 한국의 주요 교육개발기관 등을 방문하고, 우리 학계 인사들 과 상호 관심분야에 대해 관련 지식을 공유하며, 학계 분야에서의 국제교류를 확대할 예정입니다.

The Korea Foundation is inviting 22 great scholars and intellectuals from 15 countries for a six-day visit on Apr 22–27. 출간도서 소개 New Publications

The Embassy of Finland, Seoul, and the University of Turku Centre for East Asian Studies are joining forces to organize a 2013 Korean Speech Contest in Finland at the university’s second auditorium on Apr 26. The event will also feature performances of pansori and other music, helping to share Korea’s culture with Finnish audiences and motivate Korean language students.

Koreana is a quarterly journal that offers information on a diverse range of topics in Korean culture, arts, people, literature, and nature, with featured columns in each issue highlighting a specific topic. Since its first Englishlanguage edition was published in 1987, it has been made available in a total of nine languages (including Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, German, French, Russian, Arabic, and Indonesian), with 75,000 copies printed each year. The latest edition features the city of Seoul, including the origins and future of the historic capital, the Gangnam neighborhood (now world famous from the song “Gangnam Style”), a contributor’s experience of living there since the post-Korean war era, reflections of the contemporary city by a Seoul correspondent for the Economist, and a wealth of valuable historical facts.

Faces of Australia: Photographs and Children’s Book Illustrations

Ann James of Books Illustrated, Melbourne 유머러스한가 하면 세밀하다. 알록달록 생동감이 넘치는가 하면 파스텔 톤의 그윽한 분위기가 풍긴다.

KF문화센터 갤러리에서 3월 7일까지 열리는 《호주의 얼굴》 전시회장을 둘러보며 든 생각이다. 개막식 직전, 전시회의 공동주최자이자 출품 작가이기도 한 앤 제임스를 만났다. 올해 예순하나인 그는 20년 넘게 동심의 세계에서 살아온 덕분인지 눈이 반짝반짝 빛나는 것이 동화 속의 지혜롭고 착한 할머니 같은 인상이었다. 전시회 성격에 대해 물었더니 자부심에 찬 답이 흘러나왔다. 세계적 아동도서전인 볼로냐아동도서전에 지난해 출품한 전시를 옮겨온 것이다. 호주 아동문학계관작가 앨리슨 레스터의 삽화를 비롯해 호주 대표 일러스트레이터들의 최근 작품들을 볼 수 있다. 일러스트레이터로 알려진 그가 이번 전시회에 관여하게 된 배경이 무엇인지 궁금했다.

10년간 미술 교사로 활동하다 1988년 앤 해이든과 함께 멜버른에서 어린이 책 전문서점이자 갤러리인 북스일러스트레이티드를 열었다. 북스일러스트레이티드가 이번 전시회의 공동주최처가 되어 작품 선정 에 참여하게 됐다. “그림을 통해 이야기와 아이들을 연결해주는 작업이 흥미롭고, 아이들을 좋아해서” 본격적인 일러스트 레이터로 활동한 지 25년, 그는 70여 권의 책을 출간했다고 한다. 자신의 대표작으로 『아기낙타 험프 티』, 『캄캄한 밤에 아기들은 무엇을 할까?』, 『나는 더러운 공룡』을 꼽았는데 그의 작품세계에 반한 영 국 작가가 직접 요청해 작업한 적도 있다고 했다. 보통은 출판사 편집자의 요청을 받아 작업을 하는데 한국 출판사의 의뢰도 있다고 귀띔했다. 글 작가를 거의 만나지 않는다는 그에게 일러스트의 아이디어를 어떻게 얻는지 물었다. 꼬집어 말하긴 힘들지만 좋은 일러스트는 스토리를 잘 전달하는 것이라 믿기 때문에 기본적으로 이야기 내용 자체에 충실하려고 한다. 그리고 다른 작가의 전시회도 열심히 보러 다닌다. 한국 일러스트레이터들에 대해서는 어떻게 생각할까. 많이 보지는 못했지만 한국 일러스트의 수준은 아주 높다. 볼로냐아동도서전에서도 여럿 수상한 것으로 안다. 기억나는 작가로는 미국에서 활약하는 이수지가 떠오른다. 일러스트레이터로 오래 활동하다 보면 스스로 글을 쓰고 싶은 욕심이 들지 않나 싶어 슬쩍 떠봤더니 손사래를 친다. 관심이 없는 것은 아니지만 아티스트와 작가의 길은 서로 다르다. 게다가 호주 각지에서 순회전시회를 하면서 갤러리 운영에도 관여해야 해서 너무 바쁘다. 솔직히 5년 전에 소설을 써보려고 시도한 적이 있 었는데 몇 달 쓰다가 내버려둔 상태다. 지난해만 세 차례나 호주 각지를 돌며 순회전시회를 가졌다니 작품 활동하랴 전시회 준비하랴 ‘딴생각’ 할 틈이 없어 보이긴 했다. 게다가 그는 전문가 양성을 위한 워크숍 활동에도 열심이어서 중국, 한국 등도 여러 차례 방문했다고 한다. 한국 방문도 이번이 여덟ㅇ번째로 작년에는 파주 출판단지에서 개최 된 ‘북소리 페스티벌’에 참여해 워크숍을 열었다. 이번에도 어린이와 일러스트레이터 지망생을 위한 두 차례의 워크숍을 가질 예정인데, 참가 희망자가 많다는 한국국제교류재단 실무자의 귀띔에 기대에 찬 표정이었다. “책 일러스트는 기본적으로 미술의 한 분야인 동시에, 이야기의 감동을 키워주고 이해를 돕는 이미지를 만드는 일이어서 늘 도전하는 느낌”이라는 앤 제임스. 번뜩이는 재치와 미소를 자아내 는 아름다운 터치로 유명한 그의 작품세계의 비밀을 엿본 느낌이었다. 8

Humorous but meticulous. Swirling with vivid colors, rich with mellow pastel tones. Those were my impressions while viewing the works on display at the Faces of Australia exhibition, staged through Mar 7, 2013 at the KF Cultural Center Gallery. Just before the event’s opening ceremony, I met up with Ann James, the well-known Australian illustrator who contributed a number of her works to this exhibition. James, who turns 61 this year, has been working in the children’s illustration world for more than two decades. With her sparkling eyes, she seemed every bit the friendly, wise grandmother right out of a fairy tale. On her pride in the quality of the exhibition: “I brought in works that were shown last year at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair, which is one of the world’s biggest children’s book events. You can see a lot of the top work from recent years, including illustrations by Alison Lester, one of Australia’s Children’s Laureates.” On how she came to take part in the exhibition as someone known for her illustrations: “I was an art teacher for 10 years until 1988, when Ann Haddon and I opened the children’s bookstore/ gallery, Books Illustrated, in Melbourne. Books Illustrated took part in the selection of works as co-organizer for this exhibition.” James has contributed to the publication of some 70 books in the 25 years since she started working in earnest as an illustrator–a career she chose because of her love of children and the enjoyment she gets from bringing stories and children together through pictures. Her best-known work includes the illustrations for Little Humpty, The Midnight Gang, and I’m a Dirty Dinosaur. She also recalled being asked to contribute to a project by a British writer who loved her work. Explaining that she typically works at the request of publishing company editors, James noted that she has received some inquiries from Korean companies. On how she comes up with illustration ideas even when she doesn’t have a chance to meet the writer: “It’s a bit tough to explain in words, but I try to stay true to the story. I believe that good illustrations are ones that convey the story clearly. I also travel around a lot to exhibitions by other artists.” Her thoughts on Korean illustration: “I haven’t seen much of their work, but what I have seen has been very high quality. I believe they won a number of prizes at the Bologna Children’s Book Fair. One who does come to mind is Suzy Lee, who is well known in the US.” On whether her career as an illustrator has inspired her to take up writing as well: “I’m not completely uninterested, but artists and writers work in very different ways. I’m also extremely busy with the gallery, which organizes a traveling book fair all over Australia. To be honest, I did try writing a book five years ago, but I gave up after a few months.” Last year, the traveling book fair made no fewer than three treks around the country, leaving James with little time to think about much else. She is also very busy with professional workshops, which have taken her to such places as China and Korea. Now in Korea for the eighth time, she recalled holding a workshop last year at the Booksori Festival at Paju Bookcity in Gyeonggi Province. During this visit, she is scheduled to conduct two workshops for children and aspiring illustrators. She seemed excited to hear from the KF staff about the large number of people who had registered to attend her workshop sessions. “At its root, illustration is a branch of the arts,” she said, “but it’s also always a challenge, because you’re creating images to spark children’s emotions and help them understand.” It was as though she was sharing the secret of her art–its characteristic sparkling humor, its knack for producing a smile.

K-Pop 댄스배우기 – 싸이 ‘강남스타일’ / 정월대보름 ‘부럼깨기’ Learning K-Pop Dances: PSY’s “Gangnam Style” & Jeongwol Daeboreum “Nutcracking” K-Pop 댄스배우기 행사가 2월 23일 ING댄스아카데미에서 진행됐습니다. 싸이의 ‘강남스타일’을 땀 흘려 배운 참가자들이 선생님의 당부처럼 ‘말춤’ 하나만큼은 제대 로 출 수 있으리라 기대해봅니다. 24일에는 정월대보름에 ‘부럼깨기’를 할 수 있도록 서로 부럼을 나누고 연하장을 주고받았습니다.

A K-Pop dance workshop was held on Feb 23 at the ING Dance Academy. After an intensive session with PSY’s “Gangnam Style,” the participants should be able to horse dance with the best of them, as their teacher hoped. The following day, the event finished with an exchange of New Year’s cards and nuts for the traditional “nutcracking” on the Jeongwol Daeboreum (first lunaryear full moon) holiday.

한국에서 만나는 세계 - 말레이시아, 인도 편 Meeting the World in Korea: Malaysia and India 3월 ‘한국에서 만나는 세계’는 청운아동복지관을 찾아가 인도와 말레이시아를 알리 는 의미 있는 시간을 보냈습니다. 인도의 아미트 씨 부부는 인도에 대한 열정적인 강의를 펼쳤고, 아이들과 함께 전통음식 사모사를 맛보고 인도식 보드게임을 즐겼 습니다. 말레이시아의 윌리엄 씨는 인사말 배우기, 말레이시아 국기 색칠하기, 전 통놀이 등을 준비해 알찬 시간을 보냈습니다.

For this March, Meeting the World in Korea visited the Cheongun Children’s Welfare center for a meaningful experience with some visitors from India and Malaysia. Amit, from India, gave an enthusiastic talk on his country, made traditional samosas with the center’s children, and shared Indian board games. William, from Malaysia, taught some local greetings, led the children in coloring in a Malaysian flag, and introduced some traditional games. It was a rich experience for everyone.
