DID YOU KNOW Some interesting facts about Co. Leitrim Leitrim has Ireland’s shortest coast line of approximately 3km long!
Carrick-on-Shannon Wins Gold in Entente Florale
Leitrim has the smallest population of any county in Ireland with only 25,799 inhabitants (Census ‘06) Seán MacDiarmada, one of the 7 signatories of the famous 1916 Proclamation, was born in Kiltyclogher. As a leader of the 1916 Rising he was brought before a court martial, sentenced to death and shot in Kilmainham Jail, Dublin in May 1916. John McGahern, a native of Leitrim was one of Ireland ’s most famous writers in recent times. He wrote mainly about his childhood and growing up in rural Ireland in the 1930s and 1940s. Two Australian Prime Ministers were sons of Leitrim men - Stanley Melbourne Bruce served from 1923 to 1929 and his father hailed from Gortletteragh. While the father of Francis Forde, elected in 1945 was from Tullynaha, Ballinaglera Phil Fitzpatrick, native of Aughavas, wrote the song “Lovely Leitrim” and was later shot dead in New York in 1947.
President McAleese claims Carrickon-Shannon is an inspiration in this tough economic time and said that Ireland should look to the town of Carrick-on-Shannon for “inspiration and guidance”. Carrick was awarded a GOLD medal in the 2010 Entente Florale Europe competition. The Entente Florale promotes a greener and more pleasant environment, and the improvement of the quality of life for both inhabitants and visitors. Twelve countries participated in the towns category, with Carrickon-Shannon one of only four towns
in Europe that won gold. When in Carrick, to unveil a commemorative plaque celebrating the gold medal triumph, the President commented on Carrick’s quick turn around from a town “under flood water” to a gold medal winner. President McAleese said that it was ironic but also metaphoric, that despite “one of the worst recent experiences, the town never looked better.” She said the country should now look to Carrick for inspiration “a miracle occurs when people work together with the same spirit.”

the smallest chapel in Europe
Located on the corner of Bridge Street & Main Street, Carrick-onShannon, The Costello Memorial Chapel is the smallest in Europe & reputedly the 2nd smallest in the world!!! This tiny chapel was built in the 19th Century by wealthy merchant, Edward Costello as a memorial and burial vault for his beloved wife, Josephine. It may be a mere 16 feet long, 12 feet wide and 30 feet high but it is a truly beautiful testament to their love.
