THE YOUTH OF TODAY ARE THE LEADERS OF TOMORROW – Nelson Mandela

We didn’t initially intend for it to be this way, but in addition to the many shows highlighted each year in our Fall issue, there is a major focus on the industry’s youth! Call it a happy mistake, but I am always excited when I get to showcase great young people like the ones appearing in this issue who are making such positive contributions to the dairy industry.

Our youth coverage in this issue commands over 10 pages! Starting on page 22, you’ll read about our four Ontario Dairy Youth Winners. After a two-year COVID-related delay, these young adults finally got to go on their trip! No doubt they enjoyed some great conversation and bonding over cows along the way. Other Youth features in this issue include the 2022 Ontario Dairy Youth Fund Scholarship Winners, the Western Canadian Classic, highlights from the four Junior Shows across the province and a story on Arnprior’s own Sarah Dean. I encourage you to reach out to some of these great youth in your area to congratulate them on their success. And, if you know an exceptional young person who should appear in a future issue of The Link, please feel free to reach out to share that with us, too.

Behind every successful young person in this issue, whether they are mentioned by name or not, is a group of supportive parents, generous 4-H leaders, and encouraging mentors. Thank you for helping to shape our industry’s leaders of tomorrow!

Sincerely, Andrea Emond, Link Editor aemond@ontario.holstein.ca • 519-209-5553

GENERAL MANAGER’S MESSAGE

AND JUST LIKE THAT…IT’S FALL! A TIME FOR THANKSGIVING AND REFLECTION.

Here is what I am thankful for:

• My staff – we are a small team but we are getting things done! They have proven to be resilient, strong, flexible and dedicated. No matter what get’s thrown at them, they rise to the challenge and succeed. Thank you!

• The Board of Directors – for always encouraging and supporting me as I explore my role as your GM. Thank you!

• The Holstein Clubs – for hosting local events and volunteering your time to offer producers and the public opportunities for a glimpse into the dairy industry. Thank you!

• The Sponsors – from near and far, both big and small, for continuing to support our activities and events. Your sponsorship is critical to the success of the county shows, youth events, regional shows, breeder’s cups, judging schools ….the list goes on. Thank you!

• Committee Members and Volunteers – to those of you who generously give of your time and resources to make things happen. Thank you!

• To you, the Members – for giving us purpose. Thank you! As we wrap up county show season, our focus turns to winter events and planning begins for next summer’s opportunities. The Ontario Dairy Youth Award winners from 2020 finally got to go on their trip, although not to Madison this year. We traveled to Edmonton and visited farms along the way to Red Deer, where we attended the Westerner Dairy Showcase. Soon it will be time for the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic, November 7-8, at the Royal Winter Fair in Toronto. Planning is underway for our Convention and AGM being held in Ottawa this year on February 21-22, 2023 and we hope to see many of you there for our traditional in-person event. Also on our list is a return of the winter Judging Schools, review of the Junior All-Ontario Program and the return of the Inter-County Judging Competition. Throw in district meetings and county AGM’s and it will be another busy time ahead!

Wishing you all a safe and plentiful harvest season,

Pam Charlton, General Manager

WORLD DAIRY EXPO ACCOLADES

Cannington Ontario’s Joel Phoenix was presented with the KlussendorfMacKenzie Award at this year’s World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI, in memory of Duncan MacKenzie, the 1961 Klussendorf winner. Joel was recognized with the honour thanks to his positive attitude and good sportsmanship both in and out of the ring. According to those who know Joel best, he never has a negative word for the judge, even after a difficult defeat, and is extremely humble when successful in the showring. Although he has spent more than 15 years as a professional fitter and has had the privilege of working with many great people and animals, Joel never forgets where he came from nor who his family and friends are. Congratulations to Joel on this deserving honour!

“FEED LOT REFLECTIONS”

Photographer Sheila Sundborg was one of several individuals who generously stepped up to raise funds following the tragic accident that occurred after this year’s Western Canadian Classic. She donated a beautiful 8x10 framed photo called “Feed Lot Reflections.” The photo was taking in Ponoka, Alberta, where one of the drivers who was killed in the accident used to make regular stops to pick up and drop off animals. It was auctioned off in conjunction with the ‘4-H Giving To 4-H’ live auction and brought $1,000 to be donated to the WCC Fund. Full details on this show, as well as similar gestures to raise funds, can be found on pages 26-27.

JACK’S FIRST SHOW!

You always remember your first show, and judging by this picture, Jack Henderson (9, at right) of Arthur, Ont. won’t soon forget his! Jack took part in the WestCentral Junior Show in August with his cousins Earle (l) and Dylan Marks. They showed calves from MarkA-Valley Farm in Arthur, Ont. PHOTO SUBMITTED.

Congratulations to all the Ontario Youth who participated in this year’s World Dairy Expo’s Showmanship Competition. After seven heats, Ontario counted six winners in the top ten: 2nd place - Nadia Uhr / 3rd - Emi Lange / 5th - Jordan Hawthorne

7th - Jack Lange / 8th - Emma Finch / 9th- Courtney Orser

The Junior division of the Showmanship Competition was judged by Fergus Ontario’s Jason French, former GM of the Holstein Ontario Branch. Claire Swale, who has roots in the UK and currently resides in Aylmer, Ont., judged this year’s Senior Showmanship division. PHOTO OF JOEL

SPIRIT OF 4-H WINNERS

Jack Vickers of the Wiarton 4-H Dairy Club was selected as the club’s 2022 Spirit of 4-H Winner. He was presented with a portfolio by Alice Bumstead recently. “Jack is an amazing 4-H member and young person with a very bright future ahead of him,” his club leaders and nominators say. “We are a better club and county for Jack being involved.” PHOTO SUBMITTED.

The Spirit of 4-H Award is sponsored by the Ontario Holstein Branch and aims to recognize the outstanding contributions of 4-H members in their respective counties. We encourage all 4-H Dairy Club Leaders to take advantage of this opportunity and contact the Branch to receive a leather portfolio to present to your county’s winner.

ELGIN COUNTY CELEBRATES!

The Elgin County 4-H Dairy Calf Club members had a great time celebrating at their year-end awards family fun night held at Dave Clinton’s Farm, on Hwy 4 in Elgin County. The night was filled with dinner, dessert, speeches and awards, followed by games and sports for all. The leaders, pictured 3rd from top, Brent Howe, Don Catt, Henry Helder, Jason Vis and Jenna de Corte were happy to announce the award recipients. Pictured 4th from top is (l to r) Overall Top Member, Marielle Roos, Best 4-H Spirit, Destinee Pake-Dygos, and Best First Year Member, Dennis Roos. PHOTOS SUBMITTED.

THE FRASER FAMILYBreeder of Distinction

The Fraser family of Fraeland/Spring Farms, one of Canada’s most prominent and respected Holstein breeders for over 90 years, are being honoured as the “Breeder of Distinction” at this year’s TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic slated for November 7 & 8 during the 100th Anniversary of the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Ont. The Frasers will be recognized on the final afternoon of the Classic, at which time a lucky Classic 4-H participant will also win five embryos in a draw from the Fraeland breeding program.

Three generations of Frasers have guided the successful breeding program at Fraeland/Spring Farm in Ontario, while giving back of their talents and leadership to the Holstein industry they love. They share a long history with the Royal.

J.M. (Johnson Magill) Fraser established the Spring Farm herd in 1928 at Streetsville, Ont. (now Brampton), founding the herd mainly on daughters of King Toitilla Acme. In 1945, he earned a Master Breeder shield from Holstein Canada. J.M.’s ability to breed and develop great

cows and bulls, establish strong cow families, and spot “diamonds in the rough,” resulted in the Spring Farm prefix appearing in the lineage of many of Canada’s best animals of that era. In fact, the legendary A.B.C. Reflection Sovereign EX-EXTRA traces, on both sides of his pedigree, to Spring Farm breeding.

J.M. exhibited at shows wherever, and whenever, possible, many times going head-to-head successfully in those early years against such formidable, millionaire owned farms like Mount Victoria. This highly regarded “farmer-breeder” took his first animals to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair’s Holstein Show in 1928. A member of the Spring Farm/Fraeland herd has shown at the Royal Holstein Show ever since, with the exception of one year, 1996, when J.M.’s son, Jack, judged the show. In 1949, J.M. showed the Grand Champion bull, Spring Farm Sovereign Supreme EX, and the Grand Champion cow, Spring Farm Juliette EX 5*, the only time the same exhibitor has “bred and owned” both Grand Champions in the same year. Juliette

was one of J.M.’s most memorable show animals. This speckled cow was Royal Grand Champion two more times, 1950 and 1953, and is one of only seven Holstein cows to ever secure the Royal crown three times. Juliette won All-Canadian honours seven times in her career, five times as a mature cow from 1949-53. She was a member of the All-Canadian Produce in 1950-51-52-53 with her brother, Spring Farm Fond Hope EX-ST. Fond Hope, among the first Canadian bulls to have semen sold privately, rather than through an A.I. unit during the initial days of artificial insemination, was All-Canadian three times in his own right. He sired the 1960 All-Canadian Get, and his son, Lakefield Fond Hope, is the sire of No-Na-Me Fond Matt.

J.M. judged the Royal Holstein Show in 1959 and 1969. He was President of Holstein Canada in 1948, the first farmer to be President of the Canadian National Exhibition in 1963-64, and a member of the Royal Winter Fair’s Board of Directors. He was inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame in 1975. At one time the small showring at the Royal, which was the site of the Sale of the Stars and smaller livestock shows, was called the “Fraser Ring” in honour of J.M. and his wife Bessie.

J.M.’s two sons, Jim and Jack Fraser, took an active role in the Spring Farm herd while growing up. Both were exceptional showmen, with Jim winning the first Lawara Showmanship contest at the Royal in 1953 and Jack winning the Lawara Trophy in 1966. They eventually took over management of Spring Farms from their father. It was during this time that such esteemed cow families as Fond Myrtle Rose EX 4* and Spring Farm Fond Pathfinder VG 5* were developed. The Roses gave rise to such beloved cows like Spring Farm Citation Rosetta EX 21*, 1977 Royal Grand Champion and All-Canadian Mature Cow who completed seven generations of EX/VG and was nominated for All-Canadian eight times. Rosetta, who was Reserve All-Canadian three times, was also Reserve All-American Aged Cow in 1979 after being Reserve Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo. That same year, Rosetta and three of her sisters, all natural daughters of Spring Farm Master Rose EX 10*, combined to win All-Canadian Breeder’s Herd honours. Eight out of nine years, from 1971-79, Spring Farms earned All-Canadian nominations in the Breeder’s Herd class, with Roses a part of every one and Rosetta a member of seven of them. Rosetta also anchored five consecutive All-Canadian Produces (197579). The Frasers’ long established Pathfinder family, known initially in the 1950s for its production abilities, has gained well deserved notice for its type in more recent times as a result of Ravenswell Lydia EXUSA 6*, the noted brood cow whose maternal line of Spring Farm bred dams leads to Spring Farm Fond Pathfinder as her fifth dam. Three Royal Grand Champion females – Idee Lustre EX-95-3E-USA 10* in 2002, Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto EX-95-USA in 2010, and Idee Windbrook Lynzi EX-95-3E 2* in 2019 – all trace to Lydia and Spring Farm bloodlines, as do many other recent All-Canadian and All-American nominees and winners.

The strength of the Spring Farm breeding program led the Fraser family to be Premier Breeder at the Royal Holstein Show four times (1958, 1975, 1977 and 1979) and Premier Exhibitor once (1951). In addition to Royal Grand Champion females Juliette and Rosetta, they showed Juliette to Reserve Grand in 1951 and Spring Farm Nancy Reflection EX to Reserve in 1963, and had the Junior Champion female in 1947, 1952 and 1966. They captured first place in the Royal’s Breeder’s Herd class nine times.

Spring Farms earned a second Master Breeder shield in 1978. Following J.M. Fraser’s death in December 1979, the Spring Farm

herd was divided in 1980 between Jack and Jim. Jack and his family moved across the road and established Fraeland Holsteins, while Jim and his son Brad retained the Spring Farm prefix and home farm for several years before exiting the business.

Jack carried on the family’s proud tradition of breeding, developing, showing and marketing outstanding Holsteins at Fraeland. He earned a Master Breeder shield in 1996 and would continue amassing AllCanadian and All-American recognition with animals bearing his new prefix. He was a partner in Don-A-Dale Jet Crystal EX-4E 3*, the 1990 Royal and 1989 and 1991 World Dairy Expo Reserve Grand Champion. Crystal was All-Canadian 4-Year-Old in 1989, Reserve All-Canadian three times and Reserve All-American twice in her lifetime. Jack judged the Royal Holstein Show in 1996, following in the footsteps of his father who had done it twice. Only two families have ever had a father and son judge the Royal Holstein Show. A past President of Semex and Gencor, Jack won the Curtis Clark Achievement Award at the Royal in 2004.

Jack’s son, Steve, inherited the Fraser family’s passion for Holsteins. As a 4-H member, Steve was the top individual in the 1995 Ontario InterCounty 4-H Judging Competition and was part of the Ontario team that competed at World Dairy Expo. At the Scotiabank Hays Classic in 1996, he exhibited the Champion Calf, Willsona Stardust Lotto VG-87 1*, and followed that up the next year as Champion Showman, one of only four people to ever win both Classic titles. Steve returned home to farm with his father after graduating from the University of Guelph in 1999. That spring, the Frasers relocated Fraeland Holsteins to their current location at Fergus, ON. Steve took over the farm in 2005. In 2011, he achieved a second Master Breeder shield for Fraeland. Like his father and grandfather, Steve is an accomplished judge. He has judged shows in Australia, the United States, and across Canada, and been the showmanship judge at many 4-H shows including the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic (2019), Western Canadian Classic and World Dairy Expo. He is now a director on the EastGen Board and previously was President of the Wellington County Holstein Club and a 4-H leader.

Today, Steve and his wife Jackie, and 3-year-old daughter Scarlett, operate Fraeland Holsteins. They currently milk 95 cows on this 470acre farm where efficiency and producing profitable milk are key. The herd consists of 18 EX, 56 VG and 17 GP cows and has a herd average of 12,300 kg milk, 3.9% fat, 3.3% protein. From a tie-stall barn in the Spring Farm and early Fraeland days, to a free-stall barn and milking parlour in 1999, and the installation of two Lely A5 robots in 2020, the Frasers have continually adopted and made use of the latest technology and labour-saving devices for their operation.

Both Steve and Jackie share a love for the breeding, genetics and marketing side of their business. Cow families remain at the heart of their program. By regularly injecting new cow families in with their old, they have been able to diversify and adapt their breeding and marketing strategy to meet the changing times, thus ensuring continued success for Fraeland. Showing remains an integral part of their endeavours where the top ribbons and awards continue to abound, bolstered further by Fraelandbred show winners in other countries.

Buttertart VG-89, a nominated All-Canadian Senior 2-Year-Old and member of Fraeland’s nominated All-Canadian Breeder’s Herd in 2021 and Reserve Intermediate and Reserve Grand Champion at Ontario Summer Show in 2022.

“The Royal has been an important week to the Fraser family. It has been an honour and a goal to compete with the ‘best of the best’ for 90 plus years.”

In 2013, Steve bought Snowbiz Brewmaster Swan VG-88 5*, a Red Factor Brewmaster from the Glen Drummond Splendor family, as a calf. Swan became a number one GLPI cow in Canada and a huge ambassador for Fraeland, producing sons in A.I. and generating embryo sales that have resulted in many high indexing progeny around the globe. A 2015 Fraeland purchase that traces to their Pathfinder line, Saanwood Elite Stanley Cup EX-92-5E, is still going strong here at nine years of age. She has several show winning daughters in the United States including Fraeland Chief Liberty EX-92USA, All-Canadian and All-American Summer Junior 2-Year-Old in 2021.

One of the Frasers’ top cow families currently is the Bonnies. This family traces to Fairvale Jed Bonnie 94-ET EX-AUS, an Australian bred and based cow that Steve became partners in after seeing her in 2004 on one of his many trips to International Dairy Week in Australia.

Jed Bonnie was Grand Champion at International Dairy Week in 2005 and 2007 and a class winner there seven consecutive times. An imported Goldwyn embryo from her resulted in Fraeland Goldwyn Bonnie EX-95-3E 14*, a show cow in her own right who made over 103,000 kg milk lifetime and has six EX and 27 VG daughters in North America to date. Among her many exceptional daughters are Fraeland Doorman Bonnie EX-94-USA, nominated for All-American as a Junior 2 and 3-Year-Old in 2018 and 2019, and Fraeland

As the Frasers draw closer to their own 100-year milestone in the Holstein business, this personable, down-to-earth family looks forward with great pride and anticipation to being part of the 2022 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair as it celebrates “A Century of Champions.”

“The Royal is a special place,” says Steve. “Every year it is a showcase of the finest in crops, crafts and livestock Canada has to offer. Walking into the barn every year with the display of incredible dairy cattle, familiar faces, or meeting new people from near and far that share the same passion, is a joy for us. The Royal has been an important week to the Fraser family. It has been an honour and a goal to compete with the ‘best of the best’ for 90 plus years.”

The Fraser family’s talent, dedication and hard work has kept them at the forefront of Canadian Holsteins and makes them most deserving of the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic’s Breeder of Distinction honour.

ONWARDS AND UPWARDS!

This year marked a successful year for the county shows across Ontario. Most shows were up in numbers over last year, and additional counties had resumed their show. A lot of work goes into a Holstein show before, during and even after the event itself. Congratulations to all of the breeders and exhibitors of the many outstanding cattle shown at the 24 county shows across Ontario this year!

STEPHEN SIKMA

Stephen hails from Durham County where he owns and operates Sikmadale Holsteins. A lot has changed since 2009 when he first became involved in the farm operation. He more than doubled the quota holdings, switched to a TMR feeding system, now breeds all his own cows, and has renovated several barns to improve cow comfort.

At Sikmadale, 55 cows are housed in a tie-stall facility. Calves are started in hutches and then grouped in super hutches before being moved to a pack barn until calving. The dry cows are housed in a separate pack barn with ‘close-up’ and ‘far-off’ pens. Cows are fed a TMR ration with all hay and corn grown on the farm in an eightto-nine-year rotation. Corn, soybeans, wheat and hay are all in the rotation allowing for a heavy hay diet harvested from rented land with his father and brother who cash crop.

Sikmadale has always had a heavy emphasis on type in their breeding program. Currently, the Sikmas are using mostly proven bulls, but aren’t afraid to use a young bull that catches their eye. They use sexed semen when they can. Stephen is flushing three or four of the best cows in his herd regularly and has sold embryos locally and to Japan. Utilizing professional resources, keeping days-in-milk low, and using sexed semen on the best animals (and beef on the lower end of the herd) are some of the management decisions Stephen believes ensure a profitable dairy farm. To this end, he limits the days a cow is open and focuses on timing heats and utilizes veterinary and nutritional services to ensure a healthy herd.

Stephen is proud of initiating, implementing, and completing a succession plan that allows for his father to enjoy his retirement from the dairy operation while he has full ownership of the farm. He is working toward improving cow comfort through upgrades to his current setup and hopes to one day build a new facility to accommodate more cattle. A new barn will also provide his sons with an opportunity to join the operation if they so desire in the future.

In the community, Stephen has served as President of the Durham County Holstein Club and is currently a Director. He is a former leader of Durham East 4-H and still volunteers to judge, mentor and supply calves for 4-H members. Stephen serves as a Gay Lea delegate and is Director of Durham County Farmers Co-op.

AMANDA COWAN ALLENSITE FARMS, VANKLEEK HILL

Amanda works alongside her family, comprised of her grandfather, mother, sister and brother-in-law on Allensite Farms where they milk 130 Holsteins and a few Ayrshires in a free-stall, double-12 parallel Westfalia parlour. She also works full-time for Select Sires Canada as an SMS Evaluator covering Eastern & Central Ontario and Western Quebec.

In the main barn they house their milking and dry cows with a separate heifer facility, which they are hoping to renovate in the future. The Allens own 800 acres and rent 55 to ensure they’re making feed that is cost and time efficient. They feed a TMR ration consisting of a 50/50 mix of corn silage and haylage with straw and dry hay mixed in, along with high moisture corn and a protein supplement.

In terms of breeding strategies, they choose bulls based on production with good conformation. Amanda works with her brother-in-law, alongside a technician, to do the farm’s breeding by monitoring and breeding on natural heats. During the winter months, they choose to run a herd bull with the heifers. They strive for longevity in the herd and work to maximize mastitis resistance, disease resistance and overall herd health.

Amanda says one of the biggest accomplishments since she became involved in the farm is having some homebred cows score Excellent on their classifications! While continually striving for the best possible animals for the herd, it is very rewarding to see the genetics continue to improve as well. After graduation from school, Amanda purchased a few animals and some embryos here and there with her dad with the long-term goal in mind of having those homebred Excellent cows. The first was achieved in 2018. Currently the herd consists of 4 homebred EX and 28 VG.

At Allensite Farms, they have made a few changes over the last few years, one of which included changing from straw to peat moss as a bedding pack for the dry cows. Although this was slightly easier to manage, they have since switched back to straw bedding. They have also switched to milking the fresh group last which has helped with disease transfer. In the future, the ideal plan on the farm would be to move all cows and heifers under one roof to increase labour efficiency. They also hope to move toward feeding more straw and less dry hay and grow a strictly silage variety corn instead of the dual variety they’ve previously been using.

Within the industry, Amanda has been a 4-H leader for the past 14 years of the Prescott County Calf Club. She is the Past President and current Secretary of the Prescott County Holstein Club and is the Second Vice President of the Vankleek Hill Agricultural Society. Her three young boys also keep her busy and she enjoys volunteering her time to the activities they enjoy as well.

ELERI MORRIS CONDON

KINTORE

Eleri farms at Condon Holsteins in Kintore, Ont. with her parents, Trevor and Isobel, younger sister, Rhian and her partner, Charlie Hooker. The Morris family moved to Canada from Wales in 1999 and first settled in Simcoe County for several years before ultimately moving to Oxford County in 2013.

Eleri and her family milk 65 cows with two Boumatic MR-S1 robots in a free-flow free-stall. Calves are fed with a DeLaval automatic feeder before being moved to larger bedding pack pens once weaned. At six months old, calves return to the main barn where they will eventually be bred. Eleri has worked toward using primarily sexed semen for the top third of the herd and beef on the remainder. This ensures the best genetics are maintained while also keeping birth weights lower to reduce calving issues. It also helps to control heifer inventory and maximize the return on the beef crosses at the sales barn. At Condon Holsteins, the ideal cow is one that is robot-ready, trouble-free and moderately sized with good type and production.

Since graduating from the University of Guelph last year, Eleri has worked full-time on the farm. Her role has expanded over the past few years to include vaccinations, breeding and matings, as well as general herd management. She’s most proud of her initiative to update and modernize many of the management practices and protocols around the farm. Such practices include maximizing cow lactation persistency, changes in breeding protocols to include higher health and fertility trait bulls and utilizing more vaccines to reduce antibiotic use. The installation of a new dry cow pack barn in 2021 provided further progress in reducing calving issues, improving fresh cow transitioning and increasing peak milk potential.

In the future, Eleri hopes to further increase herd production and fat yields, reduce transition times and better manage the number of heifers in the herd by tightening cow selection for sexed semen use. As margins continue to tighten and commodity prices increase, Eleri says only the most efficient farms will be able to generate consistent profit. As a smaller farm, individualized cow care, matings and management decisions can help to elevate each animal’s potential for production.

Eleri was a keen 4-H member and Ambassador (2010) and attended the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic as a member of the North Simcoe Dairy Team every year she was eligible. She graduated from Alberta’s Olds College with a diploma in Ag Management and completed her Agricultural Science degree at the University of Guelph where she was an active member of many executives and clubs including College Royal, Judging Team and the OAC Leadership Conference. In 2013, Eleri worked as a Classifier for Holstein Canada and values the program for helping farmers make sound, data-based management decisions.

JON MARTIN DREAMVIEW HOLSTEINS, WELLESLEY

For the past eight years, Jon was the herdsman at Lebold Farms Inc. in Wellesley, Ont. where he was involved in the day-to-day operation with Ron and Terry Lebold. Though he no longer works on the farm full-time, he still own cows under his Dreamview Holsteins prefix and houses them at the farm. Ending on a high note, Jon returns to the farm to fill in as needed and still looks after the herd’s hoof trimming needs.

Lebold Farms is home to 90 milking cows and 110 heifers. The Lebold family grows corn, soybeans, wheat and hay on 400 acres (300 owned and 100 rented). The soybeans and wheat are sold for cash crop, the remaining crop is fed on farm. During his time at the farm, Jon and Terry did a good job of splitting work 50/50. They would meet daily to come up with a list of jobs to be completed and work together to ensure everything got done. The arrangement suited Jon just fine and he thoroughly enjoyed working in an environment where his work was meaningful and valued.

Cows at Lebold Farms are housed in a new sand-bedded robot facility built in 2019. Jon is exceptionally proud of the new barn, noting the hours of research and input that went into its construction. The farm has a rolling average of 13,000 kg of milk with four per cent fat. Jon credits high quality feed paired with exceptional cow comfort in the new barn for the increase over the past few years. Heifers at Lebold Farms are in a bedded pack barn, with pregnant heifers moving to the new barn to become familiar with the free-stalls. Calves are housed in hutches and receive 4L twice per day. The dry cows receive a straw diet.

While production is important at Lebold Farms, high type cows are also desirable. To that end, they have started genomic testing heifers to figure out which ones should get sexed semen, and which ones should get beef. It costs too much, Jon says, to raise all your heifers! The farm aims to put a few bulls into the unit each year, and in their own breeding strategy, have started to put more emphasis on feet and legs since moving to the new facility. Using bulls that will help them increase production and make healthier cows is also a priority.

Jon is a Director on the Waterloo Holstein Club and was recently hired full-time as an A.I. Technician with EastGen. In his new role, he travels across Southwestern Ontario covering for other technicians while they are on vacation. In his free time, Jon and his wife keep busy with their three young children.

Established in 1980, the competition recognizes young people aged 25-35 who are actively involved in the operation of a dairy farm, who have demonstrated leadership and taken an active role in their communities. In the past, winners traveled to Madison to take in World Dairy Expo. This year, the group enjoyed an all-expenses paid trip out West to attend the Westerner Dairy Showcase in Red Deer, AB in October. After waiting more than two years for this trip, the participants were thrilled to get on a plane and enjoy some of the most the breathtaking scenery and cows our country has to offer! Watch for their report in our next issue!

2022 SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS

ASHLEY STANTON ILDERTON

Ashley is enrolled in the Bachelor of Applied Science at the University of Guelph, where she is majoring in Child Studies. She enjoys learning about the different ways children develop and appreciates the hands-on experience she is gaining, which she hopes to use in a future career as a speech and language therapist. For the past six summers, Ashley has worked at her family’s home farm, Stanton Farms. There is always lots to do on the 900-head farm, and Ashley’s responsibilities include scraping the alleyways, washing water bowls, and marking cows that need vet attention. She also helps with herd health and feeding and registering calves. Along with her sisters, she has raised 300 meat chickens for the past three summers, from day olds to processing time, and looked after the marketing and sale of the whole chickens. Ashley has been part of the Ilderton Dairy 4-H Club for the past five years. In this time, she has developed her leadership skills and progressed into becoming the President of the club, as well as Vice-President during a very difficult COVID year. At university, Ashley is part of the Child Studies Counsel and the Motionball Club. These clubs saw her planning special events, coordinating sponsorship and raising awareness. Though her ultimate career goal may not be in agriculture, Ashley knows she will always stay involved in the industry, whether it be as a 4-H Leader, Agvocate or helping on her home farm.

ISABELLE BARR NORWOOD

Isabelle is attending Queen’s University, where she is studying Biology in the Bachelor of Science program. Her program emphasizes research, interactive labs, and field courses that will enrich her learning and provide a strong foundation for her to eventually pursue a career as a large animal vet. Agriculture has long played an important role in Isabelle’s life. Stemming from her involvement in 4-H, Isabelle was eager to get involved on her family’s operation, Bargeolane Farms, in Norwood, Ont. Here, she takes care of the cows, handles registrations, helps with milkings, and lends a hand wherever needed. Finding herself interested in animal health, Isabelle began volunteering with the large animal vet who deals with her farm, eventually going on to obtain a co-op placement with the clinic. Shadowing a professional in the field allowed her to take on extra responsibilities and gain practical experience to validate her future career choice. Isabelle participated in 4-H for several years, focusing on dairy and vet clubs. Through vet clubs based in Northumberland and Waterloo counties, she learned the basics of surgical suturing and various ways to diagnose common illness in large and small animals. During the school year, Isabelle participated in her school’s women’s soccer and volleyball teams, demonstrating outstanding commitment, leadership, and sportsmanship. She also helped coach children’s basketball, which helped teach young kids the importance of sportsmanlike conduct and focused on having fun. Isabelle’s ultimate career goal is to become a large animal vet, but for now, she is enjoying the many research opportunities available to her. She is very grateful for the experiences she has been afforded and knows they have helped her to discover the aspects of her life that motivate and drive her to succeed.

JASMINE UHR CRYSLER

Jasmine is attending the University of Prince Edward Island where she is enrolled in the Bachelor of Science Program, majoring in Biology, and specializing in Life Sciences. GRACE RISEBROUGH

UXBRIDGE

Grace is majoring in Child Studies in the Bachelor of Applied Science program at the University of Guelph. Growing up with twin sisters who have autism and other developmental exceptionalities allowed her to see the positive role that therapy can play and steered her toward this field of study. Grace plans to eventually obtain a master’s degree in occupational therapy and is working hard to achieve that goal. She was an Ontario scholar upon graduating from high school, and during her first year at Guelph, managed to put her name on the Dean’s Honour’s List in both first and second semester. She began her educational journey at Guelph with the Clara E. Elliott Entrance Scholarship, which is awarded to two individuals in her program each year for academic excellence and community involvement. Grace enjoys helping on her family’s farm, Maplebrough Holsteins, in Uxbridge, Ont. Here, she milks, feeds and beds cows; feeds calves and works to keep the barn tidy. She takes great pride in living on a farm and credits her strong work ethic to the devoted lifestyle it requires. Extra-curriculars and community involvement are important to Grace and have positively impacted her life. In year’s past, she has been a Student Leader and Mentor, and has shared her passion for dance by teaching young children. Much of her volunteer experience has focused on supporting individuals with special needs, including her work with Best Buddies, Precious Minds and most recently, Campus Friends. The latter saw her partnering with Community Living Guelph while away at university and mentoring an individual weekly with a developmental disability. Grace’s involvement in these opportunities has given her a lifetime of skills, memories, and friendships for which she is truly grateful. Grace’s dream would be to one day open an on-farm therapy facility to help children and adults with special needs. She has seen the success of such facilities first-hand and loves the idea of combining her passion for agriculture and her desire to work with people with exceptionalities as a career. She hopes to one day raise her kids in a rural setting and stay close to her family farm.

JOCELYN TAYLOR

OSGOODE

Jocelyn is completing a Bachelor of Public Affairs and Policy Management at Carleton University, with a specialization in Public Policy and Administration. The program looks at economic policy and allows her to develop a deeper understanding of the Canadian Dairy sector and explore policy options to help pursue environmental targets. Studying a topic she is passionate about makes school fun and meaningful for Jocelyn. Jocelyn hails from Taylorcroft Farms in Osgoode, Ont. where she grew up completing such afterschool chores as milking cows and feeding calves. That hands-on work has now shifted towards work in dairy sustainability. Jocelyn is currently completing her honours research paper, which looks at the transition to net zero emissions for the dairy sector. She spent her summer interning with Dairy Farmers of Canada on their sustainability policy team, while also working full-time with the government’s Privy Council Office. Jocelyn believes this hands-on work experience coupled with her dairy background gives her a unique perspective for a promising career in dairy policy. Jocelyn has completed over 48 clubs in her past 11 years as a 4-H member. She has had the honour of winning top member and top judge in her county and has been fortunate enough to compete at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic. Her volunteer work with the Metcalfe Agricultural Society and her time in 4-H influenced her career choice and upon graduation, she looks forward to making a positive contribution to the future of dairy in Canada.

At home on the farm, Josh’s main role is feeding and field work. He also works at a local cash crop and broiler operation, completing field work there, handling grain, working with the grain elevator and other daily barn chores. Josh has been active in 4-H since he was nine-year-old and has completed 71 clubs to date. He recently attended Dairy Sen$e, which gave him a new perspective and challenged him to think more about the future of his family farm. Off farm, Josh is involved in a band and guitar ensemble, his youth group at church, the local fair, as well as hockey and baseball. His family hosts an annual farm-inspired Christmas parade, which he enjoys being part of. Josh sees the value of volunteerism and looks forward to giving back to future generations by becoming a 4-H leader. Josh enjoys all aspects of farming and has known from a young age that he wants to farm when he is older. He is interested in learning new ways to be efficient and produce the safe, quality food that Canadians enjoy.

AUGUST 28 – A SAD DAY

As calves and participants returned home from the competition, the semi-truck carrying approximately 28 head of cattle (24 from Team B.C. plus a number from the Alberta and Saskatchewan) was involved in a collision with an Eastbound transport truck near Golden, B.C. The two men transporting the calves, as well as the driver of the Eastbound truck, lost their lives in the accident. All but one of the calves perished. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of Brandon Johnson, Tanner Liefting and Jagsir Gill.

The agricultural community is resilient, and it has been uplifting to see its members come together to show support. WestGen and Holstein Canada are accepting donations on behalf of WCC. A shipment of clippers and equipment to replace what was lost was procured by Carol Wright, a founding member of the WCC, and two further donations of clipping equipment have generously been made by Keen Ontario’s Kyle Stockdale of KyVision Sharpening & Clipping. Ella Wright, who for years competed at WCC, donated photos of all the calves lost to the respective 4-H members. Another act of generosity included a calf being auctioned at the Frankhaven Dispersal and Consignment Sale, with close to $10,000 being raised to support the families who suffered losses. It is gestures like these that make our industry strong. If you would like to contribute, donations continue to be accepted by etransfer to wccsupport@westgen.com or kyle_ky-vision@hotmail.com.

Sarah Dean – Taking Chances and Reaping Rewards

Sarah grew up on her family’s dairy farm - Carleton Holsteins - and was involved in the operation from an early age. She regularly fed calves and cleaned pens when she was young, and later began milking cows alongside her two older brothers. “All of us were very involved,” she says, “and whatever needed to be done, got done.” Her dad had always had an interest in “typier” cows and Sarah appreciated those same animals even before she was old enough to join 4-H. She has fond memories of attending the Carp Fair each year for Achievement Day and recalls, at the age of four, showing an orphaned lamb in the dairy ring so she could be part of the action!

Sarah has come a long way since then, but still enjoys the magic of the show ring. Every year, she takes her calf and some heifers out to the open shows in her area, and to her county show in Metcalfe. She has attended the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic twice for Carleton County, finishing 6th in Showmanship and 11th in conformation in 2017. In addition to the dairy club, Sarah has also enjoyed such 4-H clubs as Bread Club, Pie Club, and a Real Dirt on Farming Club, with her mom, Leah, acting as one of the leaders.

Sarah graduated from the University of Guelph’s Agricultural Science program last year and returned this fall to start her Masters in Animal Bioscience. She loves the hands-on research aspect of the program and looks forward to deepening her knowledge of animal nutrition, which has always been a passion for her. This year Sarah decided to do something a little different and stay in Guelph during her summer off from university. While it was the first time she was away from her family for the summer, the decision allowed Sarah to

work in Southwestern Ontario, breeding cows for ABS. In the past, Sarah has also worked as a Crop Scout for Maizex and as a Dairy Sales Intern for Purina Feeds, positions she believes gained her a deeper appreciation for how other farms operate. “As much as you might love your own farm,” she says, “it’s really beneficial to see what else works for other people and learn from that.”

Staying in Guelph also meant missing her home farm – including the cows. She had already taken the leap of joining 4-H in Dufferin County earlier this year and finding a calf to show in what would be her final year of the program was the next big step. Some friends from university suggested reaching out to the Canning Family of Canhope Holsteins in Drayton, Ont., an idea that seemed daunting to Sarah at first. But she took the chance, and the rest, as they say, is history. “It’s been awesome!” Sarah says. “I’ve learned a lot from the Cannings, and they’ve really helped me develop my show skills. I’m so fortunate that they took me in!” Ron and Shelley were more than willing to let Sarah borrow a calf and were great from the beginning. After some initial back-and-forth, Sarah ultimately chose Canhope Unstopabull Affection. “She’s a really sweet calf and she goes back to a great family!” Sarah says, referring specifically to Affection’s 3rd dam, the famous Kingsway Terrason Allie EX-95-2E 8*.

Sarah and Affection have fared well this show season, landing a thirdplace finish in the Winter Heifer class at the Dufferin-Wellington Open Holstein Show and taking Reserve Champion Showperson in

REPORTS

“Take risks, take opportunities, and step outside of your comfort zone.

the 4-H Show. Sarah has also competed with Affection at several other area 4-H shows including Listowel, Drayton, Lucknow, as well as Eastgen Challenge. The Ontario Summer Show brought with it a 12th place Winter Calf and a 3rd place finish in the 4-H show. Sarah is looking forward to taking Affection to the Royal in a few short weeks.

When she’s not busy with school or her calf, Sarah lives and breathes sports. When starting at Guelph, she decided to take a gamble and try out for varsity rugby, having played the sport competitively growing up. Unfortunately, she was forced to hang up her cleats after first year, suffering from a recurring shoulder injury she sustained in high school. After that, she joined the University’s Ringette team. For the past two years she has served as the class’s Female Sports Rep, organizing and running tournaments for the OAC. If her background in nutrition has taught her one thing, it’s that proper nutrition is key to optimal performance. While her pre-game routine consists of varied carbohydrates, reaching for chocolate milk to replenish her body post-game is a no-brainer for Sarah. “Gotta support the dairy industry!” she says with a laugh.

Sarah is grateful for the wonderful mentors she has had in her life. In her native Eastern Ontario, she looks up to herds like Hendercroft and Glennholme, two farms who really encouraged her along the way and never said no when she asked to tie in with them at a show. Photographer Vicki Fletcher has also been an inspiration and is someone Sarah has always looked up to in the show industry. Lastly, Sarah is grateful for her dad, Glenn Dean, whom she says instilled in her a passion for showing and taught her strong work ethic from day one.

Sarah is thankful to these individuals for helping her achieve her goals, but also knows that being willing to take chances along the way has been paramount to her success. Whether it was trying out for a varsity team, staying behind to work in Guelph while the rest of her friends and classmates returned home for the summer, or joining 4-H in a new county and securing a calf from a local family, being willing to take chances has paid off for Sarah.

In that vein, she offers this advice to her peers: “Take risks, take opportunities, and step outside of your comfort zone. It’s scary at first, but looking back, I’m thankful I did.”

MISSION

The Junior All-Ontario program was established to provide opportunities for holstein youth (ages 10-25)

• Develop knowledge and skills related to the dairy industry by owning, breeding, and developing their own holstein cattle;

• Learn and experience the advantages of holstein canada programs, including junior or regular membership;

• Take part in unique opportunities for recognition at shows and seminars.

Entries can be made each year in July via AssistExpo.

Loyalyn Holsteins

HERD SIZE: 45 COWS

OPERATION TYPE: TIE-STALL LOCATION: OWEN SOUND, ON

1. Describe your family’s history with Holsteins.

We both grew up on dairy farms. Rob’s parents, Lloyd and Rosalyn, bought the current farm in 1967 and Rob bought the farm next door in 1988. In 1972, Lloyd started registering under the Loyalyn prefix, and in 1986, Rob joined under the prefix Ledgerock. When we took over the farm in 2000, we dropped the Ledgerock prefix and continued with Loyalyn. Cynthia became a Junior member in 2022. We were honoured to become Master Breeders in 2017 and are proud of our current BCA (248-277-249) and herd classification: 18 EX (11 ME), 18 VG, 8 GP, and 1 G.

2. What are your breeding goals?

Our breeding goals are to breed healthy, profitable and long-lasting cows. We aim to make a cow that has high yields of butterfat and protein and one that will score Excellent in her 3rd lactation.

3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program?

We believe in herd testing and classification to verify that we are achieving our goals and to build the data base that will benefit all producers in the future.

4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation:

Our ideal cow has a great udder with ideal teat placement, and has excellent mobility, stays healthy and produces high yields of fat and protein. We also like wide and deep front ends with a slight uphill run. A cow that will work in any barn setup: robot, tie-stall or parlour.

5. What cow in your barn is currently the “Heart of the Herd”?

Loyalyn Stanleycup Trillium. She is EX-92 6E, a fourth generation homebred excellent, and recently passed 100,000 kg, following in the footsteps of her Goldwyn second dam, who was also a 100,000 kg 6E cow. Her next dam, an Outside was EX-92 6E with over 80,000 kg lifetime.

6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation?

We are proud that we could improve the herd that was started by Rob’s parents. It gives us great satisfaction that cows we have sold have done well and are valued by their new owners.

7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be?

We would improve our heifer facilities to make them less labour intensive.

8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why?

Loyalyn Goldwyn June EX-97 6E has already stood in our barn, however, she now resides at Ferme Pierre Boulet in Quebec, who developed her, and made her into the cow she is today! They both seem quite happy together!

9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out?

Build a team of trusted advisors, and remember that farming is a serious business, but it goes by fast, so be sure to have some fun along the way!

10. How do you use genomic information in your herd and what are your thoughts on the future of genomics? Genomics is here to stay and will only become more accurate and useful in the future as long as producers continue to milk record and classify to maintain the accuracy of the data base. Like many genetic tools, it is up to each farm manager to decide how they want to use it, both now and in the future.

11. How many cows do you flush each year? How do you market your embryos that are for sale?

We flush a few cows in the June family each year and market the embryos through Semex and more recently have enjoyed great success in the Frozen Genetics Sales run by fellow Grey County breeders Kim and Corey Rae.

12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do you value most?

For us, our customers appreciate cow families with lots of high scored dams, long time production and known bulls in the pedigree. It certainly doesn’t hurt if June is in the pedigree!

13. Which bulls do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years and today?

We have always tried to use balanced bulls for both production and conformation. Way back, bulls like Allen, Rudolph, Lee and Aeroline; then Shottle, Fever and Goldwyn; and most recently Impression, Unix and certainly Doorman. We are now using Alligator, Sidekick and Randall and have just purchased Bullseye and Lemagic.

14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Why?

We really try to look after the health of the animals by keeping vaccinations up to date and we feed dry hay to our younger animals to help develop their rumens. Alice is really good at developing protocols for us to follow and we try to stick to them as much as possible.
