Educating the Public It’s show season! For the last few months, we have been taking our best animals out to the 4-H, county and championship shows that have been happening across the province, often held at local agricultural fairs. Today, local fairs and The Royal are some of the only places urbanites are likely to come into contact with the animals that produce the food they eat. Through some recent experiences, I have realized yet again, how little the public knows about their food or where it comes from. Currently, there are several advertising campaigns and YouTube videos by fast food restaurants in both Canada and the US that are misinforming consumers about how their food is raised. During a recent trip to Abbotsford, British Columbia, where farms are intertwined with urban spaces, I did see an example of how local consumers are connected to farms and know where their food comes from. Urbanites can be informed! As you head out to the last few fairs and The Royal this fall, as well as when talking with urban friends and family, I encourage you to answer questions and be open to them about where their food comes from and how it is produced. Educating our consumers about Canada’s high quality standards for food production and having them support Canadian agricultural products will ensure a viable future for us all. Sincerely,

Julie McIntosh, Interim Link Editor thelink@ontario.holstein.ca

Building Value – What number means most to you? When selling or purchasing registered Holsteins, you are able to obtain a great deal of information on that animal if she has been recorded by breed improvement programs. With a registration, you receive age verification, parentage and PA-LPI. Now with genomics, that PA-LPI has changed to GLPI which has increased the reliability of how that animal can transmit their genetics. Classification gives not only the conformation value on that cow but a history of what her family looked like compared to the average in that time period. When on DHI, a great deal of information can be seen with kg milk, fat and protein percentages and BCA with deviations along with other health information that can be passed on by the owner. Should more of that health information be public? Johne’s, Leukosis, and Somatic Cell Count (SCC) are some of the tests that can be done for a health record on a cow. We have seen cows go through public auction sale barns without SCC numbers and are discounted due to the lack of information. If this information was public, sale barns would be able to have access to it, announce it and be able to bring more value to your cow. If you want to build value to our Holstein Breed…what number means most to you? Sincerely, Jason French, General Manager branch@ontario.holstein.ca

County Club Spotlight

A

Featuring

Northumberland County Holstein Club

By EL petherick

A STRONG AND UNITED HOLSTEIN CLUB IS A SOURCE OF PRIDE AND TRADITION FOR MANY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS. At the Ontario Holstein Branch, we work closely with County Holstein Clubs from across the province and get to witness first-hand the dedication and enthusiasm of club executives and members alike. We are pleased to showcase the history and achievements of county clubs across Ontario. 1. What is the club’s background and history? (When was it started, how was it formed, etc) The Campbellford Holstein Club was organized in 1920, but it wasn’t until 1934 that Northumberland County Holstein Club was formed. Bob Holtby and Jim Henderson were instrumental in organizing the Club on April 2, 1934. The first President was Edward O. Butler. Many of the county breeders had shown at local fairs but not until 1937 with the impetus of Canada’s first fieldman, R. M. “Bob” Holtby, were the black and white shows organized. The first show was held in August at Port Perry in Ontario County in 1937, with the second black and white show ever held in Canada staged in October at Roseneath, Ontario. The judge at the first show was A. D. “Bunny” Runions of the Kemptville Agricultural School. The grand champion cow of the show was named Mabel Triumph Dutchland for J. C. Nelson and Sons. Black and white shows became quite popular and again inspired by Bob Holtby, the first championship show in East-Central Ontario was held in Roseneath in October in 1942. The judge was Tom R. Dent of Woodstock, whose Springbank herd was already famous. The championship show was switched to Orono in 1943 but returned to Warkworth in 1944 and 1945 before moving to Peterborough where the Championship show was held for many years. It then moved again to the present area show at the Lindsay fairgrounds known as the Ontario Summer Show. The Northumberland County Black and White show was also held at Warkworth until 1965, when the show held in August moved to the current site – the Campbellford Fair. From the very beginning, the Northumberland Show has been a very competitive and high quality show with many animals moving on to be successful at regional shows and the Royal Winter Fair, resulting in many All-Canadian and AllOntario nominations. Northumberland County is home to 18 Master Breeders: 1964 & 1978 – Almerson; 1967 – Linmack; 1972 & 1991 – Covista; 1972 Morwill; 1981 – Ingholm; 1984 – Trenthill; 1986 – Dunco; 1990 & 2001 – Lovshin; 1992 & 2004 – Combhaven; 1994 – Nelcam; 1999 – Stonybrook; 2000 – Webb View; 2002 – Kingsway; 2007 – Merlholme. Northumberland County is also home to 3 Century of Holstein Recipients – 2005 – Hoskin Farms Ltd.; 2007 – Wm Merrill; and 2010 – Grillsdale Holsteins. 2. What has the club accomplished in recent years? Barn tours/meetings within Northumberland occur each year in the spring. In 2007, Northumberland County hosted the barn tour for East-Central when Northumberland was host to the Ontario Holstein Annual Meeting. Bus trips to other counties were an annual feature and plane trips to Wisconsin, Connecticut and Western Canada were organized in the past. In 2011, the Club organized a bus trip to World

Dairy Expo in Wisconsin and we went again this year! Each year since 1997, the club has recognized an individual to receive the Distinguished Achievement Award at the Campbellford Fair. This award is presented to individuals who have contributed to the Holstein industry and have been great supporters of the Northumberland Holstein Show and club activities. This has become a highlight of our Holstein show each year! We are also pleased that we have had a new exhibitor for the past four years at the Holstein show. The club presents a show halter to each new exhibitor. 3. What annual activities does your club organize? How do you promote club activities? Over the years, banquets, picnics, and twilight evenings have been annual events looked forward to by county Holstein enthusiasts. The main event is the annual Twilight Family Night generally attracting about 600 people. Each July, this social event is held at a Holstein breeder’s farm with a catered BBQ dinner, milk from Gaylea, Empire cheese and ice cream. Veteran Breeder and member awards, cattle judging, 50/50, drop in the bucket prizes and door prizes all make for a busy and successful evening for the club. The Club has had successful Breeder’s Cup contests for the past 4 years. Judging occurs in March with winners announced at a Bowling night a couple of weeks later. A family skating hour in February provides another activity to bring Holstein members and families together for a fun social event. The club also decided to feature county news and promote club activities by advertising in the Link magazine each issue! 4. How do you support youth in your club? The Club provides support to the local 4-H clubs, providing a show halter to all 1st year members at the Twilight meeting. The registration fee for youth interested in attending Dairy Sen$e is provided to encourage attendance. Over the years, the Northumberland Club has provided financial support to the 4-H Classic team and also provides a True Type model cow to the top 4-H showman at the annual 4-H Awards night. Northumberland supports the Ontario Summer Show, sponsoring the Senior 4-H Showmanship Class. 5. How do you communicate with your members? We send a newsletter out to all Holstein Canada members in Northumberland County 3-4 times each year. We have a Facebook group to appeal to tech savvy members. The spring barn tour, summer twilight/family night, exhibitor meeting, and our annual meeting each year all provide opportunities for direct communication with members and industry partners; information sharing about issues and concerns; as well as social events to encourage interaction and dialogue about the Holstein and dairy industry.

Eastern Ontario Holstein Representative Kris MacLeod spotted the vehicle belonging to Valerie Quesnel from Ferme LCM Quesnel Inc. She is part of a family farm operation Kris signed up and helped her set up online registration.

Scott Gordan of Bydand Holsteins shared this “family portrait” with The Link. He said “When I went to get this calf from the pasture, I saw a few cows around it. As I got closer, I realized there was four generations standing in front of me. The new mom, Bydand Shottle Jackie is in the middle behind her Windhammer heifer and she is flanked by her dam, Bydand Climate Jacobi VG-87 and grandam Bydand Farley Jessica VG-87. There is actually five generations on the farm but the full sister to Jessica’s dam, Bydand Champion Jocelyn EX-91-5E, was in the dry cow pasture.

Simcoe County has a long history of breeding great Holsteins, and this year the Simcoe Holstein Club is celebrating 75 years of breeding cows and bulls with impact. The first Holsteins to arrive in Simcoe were purchased by John Brethet and sons in 1908. There were very few Holsteins in the county during the First World War as the county was known for its beef, swine and poultry. In 1921, JJE McCague was appointed agricultural representative for South Simcoe and Holstein herds started to develop. By 1937, there were sufficient Holsteins to organize a county club with 23 members.

and Wrico. Simcoe has also benefited from a number of breeders moving north from York County including Savagedale, Fieldholme, Sunny Maple and recently Farisview. Many cow families have been developed over the years in Simcoe County. Some of these have gone on to national prominence. A branch of the Roxy family developed at Bond Haven, The Amanda’s from Savagedale, and the Effie family of Wrico all have offspring around the country and the world. A current sire, Picston Shottle is the son of a cow exported to England by Don McLean of Elmvale. Sires from Simcoe have reached around the world including Rosafe Citation R, Bond Haven Nugget, Glenafton Enhancer, Meadolake Jubilant and Wrico C Mark Kanso.

The first president was Gordon Brethet. The first secretary was CJ Cerswell, who later developed many great animals at his farm, Bond Haven. Charlie Cerswell was a National Director of Holstein Canada and travelled to over 50 countries promoting Canadian Holsteins. Another charter member, JJE McCague developed the great Glenafton herd. JJE McCague went on to be Holstein Canada County exhibitors have strongly supported other shows as well, President and President of Dairy Farmers of Canada. exhibiting at Championship shows and the Royal Winter Fair. The Simcoe County Dream Auction was the first of its kind. For the last 25 years, The Farmer Open, the Simcoe County Golf Tournament has been the major club fundraiser. Originally started by Jim Beck, area sales rep for United Breeders, then Gencor, now EastGen, this tournament usually has over 100 participants and raises in excess of $3,000 for club activities.

include Bruce and Robert Keffer, Burton and Wayne Somerville, Allan and Ron Orr, Gordon and Robert Wright, Bill and Murray Clark, and Ken and Jeff West. This speaks to the longevity of the club and the interest and involvement of its members.

The club has been sustained and kept going all of these years by the dedication of the individual club members and the club executive and directors. Every year, an annual banquet is held. In county and out of county car and bus tours have occured but these have given way to the district tours now held every year. Every year but one, a twilight meeting has been held. We have hosted the district Livestock Evaluation Day a number of times. The county show has happened annually since 1950.

In addition to involvement with the county club, many county breeders are also active in the 4-H program and other activities. Scott Brethet, Kevin Harvey, Collin Walker, Jeff West, John Denhaan, Vern Lange, Kim Nelson and Doug Lloyd all serve or have served as 4-H leaders. John Denhaan is currently the president of 4-H Ontario. A number of members are or have been official judges for Holstein Canada. Jeff West is serving as associate judge for the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic this year. Robert Wright has served as a director of Gencor, EastGen and the Semex Alliance. Allan Orr, Don McLean and Wayne Somerville previously served in this capacity. County breeder, Gordon Coukell is a former chairman of DFO.

Simcoe County has a deep history in the breed. Two long standing herds, now gone, were world renown. Glenafton and Bond Haven farms, exhibited 21 of the Grand Champion cows over the first 30 years of the county show. In 1966, Glenafton Nettie Bonheur Maud sold for a then world record price of $42,000.

I have been privileged to have served the farmers of this county for almost 35 years, first in general practice and then as reproductive veterinarian in the AI Industry. I was also proud to serve as Club Secretary from 1983-1996. With the recent passing of Allan Orr, it looks the mantle of club historian has fallen to me.

In 1971, Glenafton received 10 nominations for All Canadian. Bond Haven Signet Sally was a 3 time Grand Champion at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in 1961, 1962 and 1963. Other recognizable prefixes in the breed include Meadolake, Condon

Simcoe County has shown tremendous resiliency over the years. Breeders in this county have developed a dairy cow to suit the future and developed educational programs for youth to help them meet the challenges of the future.

Award Recognitions

H

Holstein breeders and those involved in the industry provide valuable leadership and dedication to agriculture. Others do an outstanding job with their farms or businesses and have been rewarded for this. Ontario Holstein Branch and The Link want to congratulate these individuals for their commitment to agriculture.

Paul Ekstein of Quality Holsteins named fifth Robert “Whitey” McKown MASTER BREEDER AWARD WINNER Paul Ekstein of Woodbridge, Ontario has been selected by the Klussendorf Association as the fifth recipient of the Robert “Whitey” McKown Master Breeder Award. The honor was presented at the 47th World Dairy Expo. This award recognizes a wellmanaged breeder herd that has been successful at showing and judging, while emphasizing all qualities of the Klussendorf Award, including ability, character, endeavor and sportsmanship. Ekstein, who immigrated with his parents to Canada from Czechoslovakia as a child, is known for his passion for breeding, showing and developing outstanding Holsteins. In the beginning of his career, Ekstein was building his seed business, Quality Seeds Ltd., while housing his cattle at Sunny Maple Farms. It wasn’t until 1980 that all of his hard work materialized into a farm on 650 acres of land and his herd, Quality Holsteins, in the barn. Currently, Quality Holsteins is 95 per cent homebred. Ekstein is said to have an “innate ability to see potential in cows.” This keen eye led him to purchase Plushanski Valiant Fran EX-90-USA, the dam of seven Excellent and 29 Very Good daughters, and five Excellent and 10 Very Good sons. Fran’s legacy of producing stellar offspring earned her 35 stars and the title of the highest Star Brood cow in Canada for many years. From Fran came Quality BC Frantisco EX-96-3E, and Frantisco’s granddaughter, Quality Goldwyn Flansco EX-95, Canada’s first and only third generation EX-95 homebred cow. Ekstein has made an impact on the Holstein breed through his development of deep cow families and strong sires, like Quality Ultimate EX, who helped put Quality Holsteins “on the map.”

Lowell Lindsay to be inducted into The Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame Lowell Lindsay along with three others will be formally inducted at a ceremony on Sunday, November 3, 2013 at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, Ontario. Lowell Lindsay has represented Canadian agriculture at home and abroad during his lifetime work improving Canadian dairy cattle genetics. A sire analyst, judge and genetics promoter, Lindsay has been responsible for selecting some of the most in demand sires in the global dairy industry. Lowell Lindsay lives outside Guelph, Ontario and was nominated by Semex and EastGen. “It was with great and unreserved pleasure that Semex and EastGen, submitted the nomination of Lowell Lindsay for induction into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. Lowell achieved a great deal in his career, however, Canadian agriculture and specifically the dairy cattle industry has been the true benefactor,” says Paul Larmer, Semex Chief Executive Officer. “It is impossible to measure the economic impact that Lowell has had, however his career spanned 53 years, and when one looks at the genetic progress made in Canada over that time period it is immense. Working for a ‘Producer Owned’ company for his complete tenure, Lowell always knew who he worked for… The dairy producers of Canada.”

EastGen General Manager Brian O’Connor comments, “Lowell was influential in turning artificial insemination, sire selection and young sire testing programs into the most impactful breed improvement tools to date within the dairy industry. Furthermore he was a driving force in establishing Canada as the world leader in Holstein genetics, and became In his career, Paul Ekstein has bred 200 Excellents: 163 females and 37 an international industry icon for sire selection, cattle evaluation, judging males. He has been awarded three Master Breeder awards, along with and exhibiting cattle while also inspiring young people to drive the being inducted into the Canadian Agriculture Hall of Fame. Quality industry further in these areas.” Holsteins has been honored with the title of All Canadian Breeders’ Herds eight times in the last 23 years. All of these accomplishments, along with Paul’s dedication to breeding and developing superior Holsteins and his passion for doing so, earned him the honor of McKown Master Breeder.

Patti Alsop has been involved with the Glenwin herd The biggest influence in Patti’s life was her grandfather. He had the her whole life, but it traces back well before that, as cow sense that has passed on to Patti. “One of my goals is to always breed the same kind of cows as my grandfather,” says Patti. “His cows a homebred herd since 1947. were tall with nice rib and good udders. He always bred to keep that “The herd was my grandfather’s. My dad was an only child, a plumber going.” and not interested in the cows. I went to the barn everyday with my grandfather and I was his right hand man,” says Patti. “He had a heart Patti says that her cows are right up there after her kids. The herd has been home bred since 1947. She has all of the pedigrees of cows dating back to then. All of the cows can be traced back to bulls such as Lonelm Texal Highcroft, Roeland Reflection Sovereign and ABC Reflection Sovereign from Maple Cattle Breeders, of which her grandfather was a member.

Patti’s other children have off-farm jobs. Meghann does payroll in Fort Erie, Jessie is working towards becoming a nurse practitioner at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto and Claire attends Wilfred Laurier University majoring in biology.

CHANGING WITH THE TIMES www.ontario.holstein.ca

All of the kids milked cows, had chores on the farm or helped with all for feed. She has 150 acres in corn (100 for corn silage and 50 for babysitting. Everyone came to the barn in the morning before school high moisture corn), 120 in barley and the rest in hay. Located in the and after school they were all there again. Dundalk Highlands, the farm averages 2,300 heat units per year. Patti admits raising five kids and farming full time has been a challenge over the years. “My kids always appreciated the work that I put into the farm,” she says. “They have all been really good kids. If I came in to the house and asked them to make supper they always would. They go ahead and do things. They have made things work over the years.”

Much of the cropping has been custom over the years, but now the only custom cropping is corn silage harvesting and liquid manure pit emptying. She purchased the first large tractor, an MX 120 when Matthew turned 14. Patti said it was tough with the kids being small and being a single parent to do the cropping.

Patti is proud that she has sent all of her kids to college and university Patti absolutely loves her cows and they are the most important thing and her cows have paid for everything. to her after her kids. Kevin jokes that Patti is a cow collector and she will not sell anything. “She has trouble getting rid of cows and wants Patti’s fiancé and neighbor Kevin Seeley, helps out a lot around the to keep everyone,” he says. Every heifer gets a chance and will not be farm as well. He fixes much of the machinery, helps with cropping and sold until at they are at least two years old. Patti will not sell calves was a great help when building a new barn. He used to be a carpenter. because she wants to see how they will turn out. The original family farm was in York County near Schomberg, ON. Patti farmed there with her brother for 10 years. In August of 1989, Patti purchased a farm near Singhampton in Grey County. “We moved up on what seemed like the coldest day ever, December 27, 1989. The roads were all blocked from a huge snowstorm and we couldn’t see the barn from the house,” says Patti. “The previous herd had sold in October, so we wanted to get the cows into the barn for the winter.”

Although Patti loves all of her cows, there is a family that has stood out for Patti over the years. More than 85 per cent of the Glenwin herd traces to three generations of Excellent cows. Glenwin Stylist Cindy EX-2E-CAN 4* was born in 1979 and went on to complete 11 lactations. Cindy, her daughter, Glenwin Challenge Clover EX-CAN 5* and Clover’s daughter Glenwin M A Chrissy EX-2E-CAN 7* (by Mark Anthony) all had a lot of daughters and lived to 13 years The family moved up to Grey with 35 cows. In the winter of 1997old. Chrissy was sold to Japan, but Patti 1998 she added a piece on the barn and added 20 more stalls. Patti was decided to keep her. All three cows have milking a lot of cows in box-stalls at the time. The tie-stall barn had had a huge influence on the herd. 62 tie-stalls and with continued growth they were swinging ten and milking another 20 cows in box-stalls. Growing gradually over the years, Patty is now milking 100 cows. Patti jokes that she is on her sixth bulk tank since starting to milk cows. She has out grown them all. She doesn’t plan it, it just happens. Everyone was tired of the old barn and feed efficiency was getting to be a problem. One year ago, the Glenwin herd moved into a new labour efficient sand-bedded free-stall barn with 134 stalls and a double eight parallel parlour. When building the barn, Patti went with the top technology available, including Afilab from DeLaval. It measures protein, fat and lactose in the cow’s milk each milking to help detect subclinical ketosis. Pedometers are used to help with heat detection on cows and heifers. It is tough to see heifers in heat as they are housed at a different pole barn. Dry cows are in a yard.

steins

Since moving into the new barn last summer, the herd is now fed mainly a corn silage diet through TMR. This was the first time a TMR had been used. In the tie-stall barn the cows were fed a high grain and baleage diet as well as hay from a hay robot. The corn silage diet has proven to be much more cost effective. Patti now owns 600 acres of land. When she moved to Grey, she bought 200, but has continued to purchase land as it becomes available. She rents another 100 acres bringing the total to 700, used

Another ten per cent of the Glenwin herd descends from another cow, Glenwin Roland Pet EX-CAN 5*. Her mother, Glenwin Mark Pepper had two daughters, with the other being Glenwin Royalstar Salty VG86. Salty’s daughter was Stylist Cindy from whom the rest of the herd descends.

every year to the County Show. Glenwin A Jet Jessica EX-2E-CAN 2* was a favourite show cow that showed in York and Grey. She was Best Bred and Owned in 1991 at the Grey County Show. When they first moved to Grey they showed a bit, but not so much now, as there is just not enough time.

A current day favourite is the Cheech family, a branch of the Clover cow family. Glenwin Lheros Cheech VG-88 has an Excellent daughter (who has a Sid daughter) and a Good Plus 83-2-year-old and a terrific Seaver heifer. Cheech had some mastitis problems so she never got to be Excellent. Patti really likes how this branch of the family is developing.

The daily routine at Glenwin is to milk the cows two times a day. They make feed two times a day in the summer and one time in the winter. The cows are bedded with sand one time every three weeks. Patti does most of the milking. Her son Matthew helps with the two year olds and then goes to make feed.

Patti has a technician come in to do the breeding. She likes the interaction with them. They come into the barn and she finds out what bulls other breeders are using. For other suggestions on what to breed cows to, she will go to barn meetings or the Eastgen Challenge. Patti notes that 99 per cent of the bulls she uses are from Eastgen as the company traces back to Maple Cattle Breeders. Currently she is using Chelios, Reginald and Doorman. She has a lot of Stanley Cup sired calves on the ground and wants to see what they look like. She really likes her Sid heifers. She The current herd classification at Glenwin is seven Multiple Excellent, used Fever early on and flushed to him and likes those heifers that are six Excellent, 59 Very Good, 54 Good Plus and three Good. The cows calving in. Patti doesn’t use a lot of genomic bulls. are milking well with a current herd average of 11,800 kg of milk and 3.6 per cent fat and 3.3 per cent protein. The herd’s BCA is 246-243- Patti would like to continue purchasing land in the future. “If you 242. For several years, Glenwin was the highest production herd in don’t buy it, it is gone forever,” she says. Patti also plans on milking cows for as long as she is able, joking that the new barn is wheel chair Grey County. accessible so she can milk cows when she is in a wheel chair. Being a woman and completely running the farm in a predominantly man’s world can still prove to be a challenge. Patti always wanted the Patti would like to be able to take a couple of days off. She has not cows and her brother didn’t. Very modestly Patti says that she hasn’t travelled anywhere having to look after her cows and kids. She and done anything that nobody else could not do. “Women get hung up Kevin have dreams of travelling to Australia and the Dakotas. that they cannot run machinery for example,” she says. “If you cannot Free time is at a minimum as Patti spends most of her time in the barn do something, hire someone to do it.” with the cows. She has a two-year-old granddaughter in Fort Erie and She says to find someone that you can look up to, to get advice, but she would like to spend more time with her. also someone who challenges you by saying ‘why are you doing that?’. Though things have changed over the years for Patti and her family at It makes you look at a problem a different way. Glenwin, her love and passion for her cows have held steadfast. They Patti has an innate cow sense and an ability to do it by herself. She is have been with her and been her rock along the journey of her life and through the challenges as well as the joys. Patti’s future with her family very patient with her cows. and cows looks bright as she moves forward doing what has brought Patti used to show some animals. In York, they would take animals her this far. As difficult as it was, Patti did sell Glenwin Goldwyn Calipso EX-952E-CAN to Pleasant Nook, Marty Unholzer and Glenvue Holsteins. Calipso recently placed sixth out of 21 in the 5-year-old class at the 2013 World Dairy Expo. She was a nice looking cow from whom Patti still has 2 daughters. She is keeping an eye on that family to develop in the coming years.

County Show Report

ontario’s

Don’t wait for the people to come to see your cow, take the cow to the people! Your local county show is not only a great socializing and networking event, but it is also a great marketing opportunity for your herd. Whether you take a string of 20 or just one animal, your farm name gets put on the map and just maybe, the next time someone is looking for a show or sale animal, they will turn up at YOUR barn door. 2013 was another successful year for the county shows across Ontario. Some were up in numbers, some were a bit down, but all in all, the shows were well attended by exhibitors and spectators alike. A lot of work goes into a Holstein show before, during and even after the event itself. Congratulations to all of the breeders and exhibitors of the many outstanding cattle shown at the 26 county shows across Ontario this year!

Breeder and Exhibitor of both the Junior and Senior divisions were won by Crovalley Holsteins. One of the constant strengths of the success of the show is the energy and enthusiasm provided by the East-Central district 4-H members as they compete in showmanship and clipping competitions. Winning Championship Showmanship honours went to top Intermediate, Peter Leach, Reserve Dan Werry and Honourable Mention Taryn Campbell. Other class winners included Junior Showman Caden Finley and Intermediate Showman Siobhan Teel. The second Senior Calf, Duckett Federal Taz owned by Gracehaven & Royal Lynn Holsteins and is the 4-H project of Christine Armstrong was Honourable Mention Junior Champion and the Champion 4-H entry. Reserve Champion 4-H Calf went to Shawn Potter on Century Star Fever Sassy. Honourable Mention 4-H went to Bethany MacDonald. Earning the Champion Clipper award was Kyle Stockdale followed by Quinton Baird, Ryan Crowley and Dan Werry. The Ontario Summer Show continues to be recognized as one of the premier shows in Canada. This is a result in large part due to the efforts of a hard working show committee and the great support of area sponsors. Other highlights of the week included a very competitive Inter-County 4-H Judging Competition and a tag sale hosted by Hanover Hill Sales and Marketing at Salem Holsteins. The 2014 show is scheduled for July 25th, we look forward to your participation.

Ontario dominates in many a The 2013 World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI will be memorable for many people as Ontario residents claimed many prizes in different competitions. The first blue ribbon claimed by an Ontario person was Adrian Franken of Teeswater who won the Youth Fitting Contest over other clippers from the US, Canada and Germany. The Red and White Holstein show continues to impress spectators for the size of the show but also for the continued improvement of Red and White Holsteins over the years. A scream of excitement came from the rail when Hanalee G Busty Babe won Junior Champion of this show. Babe won the Junior Yearling class and is owned by Hank and NancyLee Hazeleger and Marty Hazeleger of Embro. Ontario

bred animals placing 4th in class were Calbrett Rdlnr Suprise-Red-ET in the Summer Yearlings, Lochdale Shaquille Missy in the Junior 3 Year Olds and Valleyriver Jup Rudy in the Four Year Old class. On the Thursday evening, World Dairy Expo hosts a showmanship contest with a different judge for the Junior, Intermediate and Senior divisions. A total of 288 participants took part over the three divisions. Carl Phoenix of Sunderland judged the Intermediate division and placed Madison Dyment of Burgessville as his first place competitor. In the Senior Division, Murray Reissner of Woodstock placed the class with two Ontario participants taking part. Reissner placed Vanessa Crowley

aspects at World Dairy Expo of Peterborough as his top showperson and Adrian Franken of Teeswater as his third place showperson. Congratulations to these Ontario 4-H members for their excellent work in the showmanship contest. The World Classic sale celebrated their 25th anniversary and a calf from Ontario topped the sale. Oconnors Aikman Scarlet-Red-ET was sold for $131,000 for owners Genervations, Mapel Wood and O’Connors to the Scarlet Syndicate c/o Patty Jones of Puslinch.

Hanalee G Busty Babe was Junior Champion of the Red and White Show for Hanalee Holsteins and Marty Hazeleger, Embro.

Madison Dyment placed first in the Intermediate Showmanship class (second person in from the left) beside Judge Carl Pheonix.

The Holstein Show was judged by Justin Burdette of Mercersburg, PA and he was challenged to place 412 animals over the two days of the show. Crovalley Holsteins of Hastings took four heifers and placed 5th in Junior Calf, 6th in Junior Yearling who was also 1st Best Bred & Owned and 3rd Junior Best Three Females anchored by their 3rd place Intermediate Calf, Crovalley Lavanguard Adele. Eastern Ontario’s Signature R Katness placed 3rd in the Summer Yearling class for Signature, Edwards, Seavalley, Glennholme, Eaton and Coates. Benrise Gold Jewellry bred by Tom Benshop of Bowmanville placed 2nd in the Junior Yearling class for her new owners from Ohio. Phoenix GR Gloria is bred by Barclay Phoenix of Greenbank and High Point Holsteins of Port Perry and she was 3rd Senior Yearling for Siemers of WI. Charwill Farms of Wallenstein bred the 1st prize Senior 2 Year Old, Charwill Attic Marcy who is out of Dixellen Leduc Mavis. Marcy is now owned by GenCom Holsteins. The class that everyone was anticipating was the Four Year Old class and it did not disappoint with a tremendous group of cows. Heading to the top of the class was a pair of cows that were bred in Ontario. Winning the class was Cookview Goldwyn Monique that was bred by Kevin Cook of Stratford and now owned by Butlerview. Placing a close second was Robrook Goldwyn Cameron and she is bred by Robin Parish of Woodville. This pair went on to claim Intermediate and Reserve Champion and then Reserve and Honourable Mention Grand Champion behind Bonaccueil Maya Goldwyn for Ty-D, Jacobs, A & R Boulet and Droulet of Quebec. Other strong finishes for Ontario cows was Willowholme Goldwyn Jessica placing 3rd in the Mature Cow class for breeder Howard Elliott of Lowbanks and now owned by Blondin and Villyvon of Quebec. Perenial favourite, Starbrite Lyster Lyndsay graced the ring again and placed 2nd in the 125,000 lb class for owner and breeder Starbrite Holsteins of Mildmay and partner Hodglynn Holsteins of Kincardine. Congratulations to all of the exhibitors that took part in World Dairy Expo and to all the Ontario breeders that have bred so many great cattle to show on the coloured shavings.

Holstein Youth

hlights Ontario Dairy Youth Award Trip

T

The four winners of the 2013 Ontario Dairy Youth Award did not know each other prior to their trip to World Dairy Expo but they had one thing in common, the love for the Holstein cow. The trip included Amber Kilgour from Maxville, Cameron Graham from Picton, Kevin Klages from Neustadt and Dan Dykxhoorn from Springfield and were accompanied by Jason French from Ontario Holstein.

On the way to World Dairy Expo on Thursday, the group stopped at Rosy Lane Holsteins where junior partner, Jordan Matthews showed how they manage their 800 cow herd. They breed for animals that have strength but not stature and give high volumes of milk.

After leaving our hotel in Fond-du-Lac, WI on Wednesday morning, the group headed to one of the farms of Milksource. Tidy View Farms is where their head office is located and they milk 6,000 cows at that location. We also toured their show barn where they house many recipients for ET. Ragnar Holsteins was the second stop where Mark and Angie Ulness toured us through their 80 cow tie stall herd and fed us lunch while we discussed with them how they manage their operation with current milk prices. Ever-Green View Holsteins is owned by Tom and Gin Kestell and their herd boasts a 17,500 kg herd average with Tom selling 3,500 embryos a year. His new clients are in India and China along with Russia, where he spent 20 days visiting to make contacts for sales. Ryan-Vu Holsteins is owned by the Ryan family and they milk 80 cows in a tie stall environment. Chad and Amy Ryan manage this marketable herd as well as work off the farm. Therefore they start their day at 3:20am with kids in tote! The final stop was to Abel Dairy where Steve Abel is the fourth generation on the farm and has grown the herd to 1,500 cows. They are housed in two Cover-All buildings and one conventional barn. A new Heat-Time system has been installed with each cow being monitored for ruminant trends as well as activity.

The four winners of the Ontario Dairy Youth Award agreed that this trip was an unbelievable experience. They got to know more people in their industry, pick up management tips at the farms visited and learn more about what genetics are working to make the kind of cow that they are striving to attain. They would encourage all dairy producers to apply for this award as it will be amongst the top things that they have been a part of during their career.

The National Dairy Shrine in Fort Atkinson, WI is the curator of information and pictures of all dairy breeds for World Dairy Expo and the state of Wisconsin. Pictures from each breed’s grand champions at Chicago and Madison are on display and it is The first day of touring farms took the group to Butlerview interesting to see the development of each breed. Holsteins where they viewed their show barns and saw the large number of heifers that were on IVF. The Engel family’s Luck-E The 2013 World Dairy Expo did not disappoint our group with the Holstein herd impressed the group with their highly classified cows incredible quality of cattle on display and the enormous size of the with many backed by Ontario bred cows. The final stop of our first trade show. When at this international event, we were proud to be day was Budjon Farms where they have their own herd plus over 100 Canadian with so many of the country’s cattle placing at the top of the classes. ET calves and show cows boarded at their farm.

A special thank you to the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund and GayLea Foods Ltd for sponsoring this award. Interviews for the 2014 award will take place in early April 2014 and young producers are encouraged to send in their application prior to March to your local county club secretary.

purchased as a fresh two year from Hugh Fawcett in Winchester. Rosalie currently has five pregnancies on the way and two heifers on the ground. She has a projected rolling BCA of 320-366-300. Another favourite is Midas Touch ATWD Revlon who scored Very Good as a two-year-old and is due in December. She has five pregnancies on the way and two heifers so far.

Brian Berry is proof that a young person can start small and build some exceptional Holstein genetics quickly. Brian owns and operates Rock-A-Berry Holsteins along with his grandpa, William Berry and parents David and Lisa Berry. The Berry family is currently milking between 2025 cows in a tie-stall barn near Seeley’s Bay. The property has always been home to livestock and been owned by a Berry family member since it was first purchased in 1820 by ancestor John Berry. Along with the dairy operation, the Berry family runs 400 acres of alfalfa, corn and soybeans and custom operates 1000 acres. Six years ago, the Berry family became a one hundred per cent purebred herd and started to register animals under the RockA-Berry prefix. They currently have a herd classification of two Excellent, 15 Very Good and nine Good Plus with a rolling BCA of 248-253-243. Brian was a huge influence when the family moved to become a purebred herd. He started talking to fellow 4-H members at the EBI Showcase in Spencerville and learned the benefits of having a purebred herd and using tools such as classification to improve the genetics and overall management on the family farm.

Brian currently works full-time on the home farm where he manages the breeding and feeding and does some of the milking. When he is not busy at home, Brian can be seen fitting at Holstein shows in Ontario and the United States and has recently started helping picture bulls for Select Sires with Adam Hunt. “I learned to not be afraid to ask questions,” Brian says. Gordy Black, who raises heifers for Brian Berry, has been a mentor to Brian in the past as he becomes more informed about dairy genetics.

Brian Berry (centre) was Reserve Grand Champion 4-H with Junior Yearling, Montdale Dundee Jenny at the County Show. Honourable Mention Grand 4-H went to Emma Farlinger (left) and Colleen Halpenny (right) took home Grand Champion 4-H.

Last year, Brian competed at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic for the first time with his homebred 4-H project, Rock-ABerry Tencount. This year, his 4-H project is Montdale Dundee Jenny. She was recently first place Junior Yearling and Reserve Grand 4-H heifer. In the future, Brian hopes to take over the family farm where he would like to continue to build deep pedigrees in hopes of being able to breed an Excellent 97-point cow one day. He also wants to be able to compete competitively at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair Holstein show.

At the age of 13, Brian purchased his first animal Stoneden Skyfame Beauty with his dad David and worked on the farm during the summer to pay off his portion of the purchase. Now 21, he has purchased eight animals himself under the Rock-A-Berry Prefix. Brian’s favourite cow in the barn is Bullsbrow FBI Rosalie, an EX-91-2E cow that he

Participants began the day writing a quiz based on material from the “You be the Judge” manual, which all young judges use to hone their skills. After completing the 50-point quiz, the 4-Her’s evaluated three classes of Holsteins, three classes of Jerseys and one class each of Brown Swiss, Guernsey and Ayrshire cattle.

Courtney O’Neill was named High Individual winner in the senior category. She also won many other senior category awards. High Individual Runner-Up was Alan Nanne.

After lunch, participants reconvened to give their reasons for evaluation by the official judges of the day: Murray Reissner, Ken Empey, Bert Stewert, Jennifer Peart, Dean Warner, Stephanie Warner-Murphy, Brian Carscadden, Kevin McLean and Terry Beckett. Senior members gave reasons on six of the classes they judged in the morning while juniors gave reasons on three. The official judges gave their official placings and cuts to finish off the afternoon. A fabulous roast beef dinner was enjoyed by all participants, volunteers and sponsors as the group looked forward to the announcement of the four participants who had won the 10-day all-expenses-paid trip to Madison, Wisconsin to attend World Dairy Expo. Jason French of the Ontario Holstein Branch thanked the sponsors and volunteers for the successful day. Sarah McIntosh of John Deere, the event’s premier sponsor, congratulated all participants and wished the Award High Team & Coach

Holstein Canada’s 2013 Enrolment Program Eastedge Holsteins, Springfield, ON

W

By Angela Howard

Wim Muilwyk knew just what he wanted for his 21st birthday, to register his herd of cattle, and for me it was a great day to call on this keen young dairy farmer! Wim has had a great deal of working experience in his short lifetime, but there is no question that he has found his calling in dairy farming. His keen knowledge of genetics and his love of the industry make for a great future in this industry. Wim grew up on a dairy farm in Oxford County, just outside of Brownsville. He, along with his older brother, 2 younger brothers and a sister, assisted his parents with milking around 250 head of Holsteins.

Since purchasing the farm in July of 2011, a new 4 row sand bedded free-stall barn has been erected to further improve on cow comfort and allow for the opportunity to expand if possible. A double-eight parallel parlor was chosen over a robot simply due to the fact that Wim truly loves working hands on with his cows and feels that milking them twice a day is the best way to know them.

Wim is very proud of the animals that he is working with and Although his parents didn’t register appreciates the solid breeding of their animals, they taught their the previous owners. His interest in children the importance of good genetics and the desire to have more management and knowing your information on cow families drove animals. This is something that his decision to register his herd, has resonated with Wim. From a that was already on DHI. Wim very young age, he developed a uses registration as a management very keen interest in pedigrees and tool for inbreeding and sees it as he has gained a great knowledge in a financial benefit when selling breeding and genetics. To this end, animals from his Eastedge prefix. his knowledge of both modern Classification will be next for this Wim Muilwyk in his new barn. day and earlier used bulls would herd. Wim feels that it will help impress even some of the greatest him to select bulls more accurately cow men in our industry. and sees this program as offering a great satisfaction to see good cows score well. When asked what his goals are, this young dairyman would Wim started making breeding decisions on his home farm at the age like to sustain a herd with high production/components along with of 15 and was doing the breeding himself at 16. He started working high classification. at Nagelhaven Farms during his high school years which only fueled his interest in attaining more knowledge about genetics. Wim recalls Experience the benefits of animal registration seeing an animal in the parlor that he considered to have great and classification! confirmation and he would write down her registration number so that he could look her up on the farm computer after work and see • Available to all herds who have not classified in two or more years. • Herd consultation visit with an experienced classifier. Discuss the what her pedigree was. Once Wim graduated from high school he took a job with an excavation company for a year. His parents were looking for ways to ensure that their two oldest sons could continue in the dairy industry and as luck would have it, they were able to purchase a 100 acre farm with 49 kgs of quota and 120 head of cattle about two miles from the home farm just in Elgin County. Wim’s older brother chose to stay on the home farm, so this new venture was offered to Wim. Then 19, he gladly jumped at the opportunity.

benefits of classification and how the information can be used on farm. • No charge herd visit fee (regular or mid round) for first classification. • For qualifying herds with no registration activity for 3 or more years the program will also offer: – Registration fee discounted by 50% for all animals (excluding base) registered within 6 months of commitment to the program. – No charge to transfer ownership of animals resident in the herd prior. – To qualify for the registration savings herds must agree to participate in at least one classification visit. • Ontario Holstein Field staff are available to help you with the registration process.

A new excellent cow or a very good two-year-old is a breeding accomplishment. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. From June 2013 through to the end of August 2013, there were 411 1st time Excellent cows and 211 Very Good two-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. Robert & William Raines Farm: Raivue Holsteins Herd Size: 55-60 milk cows, 160 head total Operation Type: Tie-stall Location: Sunderland ON (As told to Julie McIntosh) 1. What traits do you like the most about the Holstein breed? I like the production size and stature. Also with the Holstein breed, I have to say that I love the people involved in the industry. Through my years in 4-H and going to the Royal and Madison, the friendships I have developed with people throughout the province, county and continent are extremely valuable. We always discuss what works on their farm and what doesn’t and ways to improve things. Something as simple as the length of chain on tie-stalls is valuable information. These friendships will last a lifetime. 2. What are your breeding goals? Our goal is to always try to improve type, production and longevity. 3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program? Classification and milk recording are the most important tools in our breeding program. In the past, embryo transfer has helped to shape our herd. 4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation: Our ideal cow is easy to care for with good production and high components. 5. What cow in your barn is currently the “Heart of the Herd”? We would have to Raivue Sanchez Pamela VG-89-3YR-CAN who recently was Reserve Intermediate Champion at the Ontario Summer Show is our current “Heart of the Herd”. She goes to our best line of breeding, White Cow. We hope to breed from her and get some embryos. 6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? My dad won two Master Breeders and we earned the third one. We are a family farm settled in 1850’s and have continued on to this day. I am also proud that we are mainly a homebred herd. 7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be? We are always trying to improve overall type and feet and legs. 8. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out that you wish you had been told? Don’t be afraid to make mistakes, everybody does. You will always learn from your mistakes and bumps along the way. Also, breed the kind of cow that you want and farm the way want to. Do what will fit your operation. 9. How do you use genomic information in your herd and what are your thoughts on the future of genomics? We use about 95 per cent proven bulls on our farm. We are not against genomics, but we think there are too many people treating genomics like they are 100 per cent accurate not 68 per cent they are. We like to work with high type bulls. Genomics are a good tool to help weed out bad bulls. It is a great improvement. We think that genomics will settle down and may someday get closer to 100 per cent.

The Raines Family: Back (l to r) Tamara, Robert, William and Tina Front: Patricia 10. What are your thoughts on sexed semen? Do you use it? We have bred a lot of heifers to sexed semen for the past two years on heifers and cows that have good heats and had good conception with it. This year we have had 28 heifers and two bulls. We used six different bulls and it is bringing our heifer population up. Now, if we see an poor heifer, we can replace them because we have a lot more. 11. How many cows do you flush each year? How do you market your embryos that are for sale? We usually do two to three flushes a year. We used to sell lots of embryos but that market has changed to elite show cows and high genomic cows. We implant most of our embryos recovered. 12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do you value most? Red cows, genomic or show cows always sell really well. Still, a good type cow at the auction barn is usually at the top end of the sale even if it is only $1,800. 13. Which bulls do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years and today? Bulls over the years that have had the most impact are; Lindy, Leader, Goldwyn and Gibson. Today we are using Windbrook, Sid, Lauthority and Chelios. 14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Why? We try and do a good job of all management practices on our farm that will lead to success. Practices like vaccinating, hoof trimming, proper milking procedures, and using tools like DHI to watch for cows that have problems with SSC will ensure that our operation is successful. Also, growing good crops and harvesting them on time enables us to get the best quality feed and in turn allows us to keep feed costs down.
