TAKING CHANCES It’s true what they say – life is all about taking chances! Whether it’s picking a new genomic sire to use on your heifers, taking a cow out to her first big show or signing for a big loan to build your dream barn, the choices we make and the chances we take every day can be life changing. Sometimes these choices result in epic failures, but more often than not, we come out on top, steadfast as ever to reach new goals in the future! We’re happy – and extremely grateful – that a handful of prominent breeders chose to take a leap of faith and enter our annual Heart of the Herd competition this year! It takes a lot of courage to throw your name in the proverbial hat, but we’re so glad they did and we hope you will take the time to admire their entries and vote for your favourite. On a similar note, our All-Ontario competition is now open! Entries are due in Assist Expo by November 18. If you’ve never entered, why not try your luck this year? Taking chances and trying new things seems to be a common theme running throughout many of this issue’s features. As you take a read through, I encourage you to recognize those who have put themselves out there in order to achieve greatness and invite you to be inspired by their example. All the best,

CHANGE ON THE HORIZON Many of you may have heard of the recent change that's taken place at the Ontario Holstein Branch. The Board of Directors thanks outgoing General Manager Peter Brand for his contribution to the Branch over the last year and wishes him the best in the next chapter of his career. The Ontario Holstein Board and staff looks forward to continuing to serve our members and youth with the utmost integrity in the months ahead and looks forward to seeing many members at the numerous upcoming events and club meetings. The General Manager position will be posted in the very near future. In the meantime, we thank Adrian Vander Wielen for stepping in as the Interim General Manager. In addition to handling his East-Central district, Adrian will act as the point person for all Branch-related issues or concerns until a new General Manager is appointed. Change is never easy and we thank all of you for your understanding and support during this time of transition. Adrian can be reached by email at adrianvw@cogeco.ca or by phone at (705) 927-3701. 2016 BMO Ontario Farm Family Awards Four Ontario Dairy Farms were recently recognized as 2016 BMO Ontario Farm Family Honourees at this year’s International Plowing Match & Rural Expo in Minto, Ontario. The BMO Ontario Farm Family Awards recognize the outstanding contributions made by farmers across the province. The Awards are an exciting way for the community to come together to celebrate these exceptional families, as well as show support to the increasingly important urban-rural relationship. The winning families were treated to a day of Plowing Match events, as well as a plaque presentation, lunch and a family photograph session.

Victory for Vogue!

Each year, the World Dairy Expo Herdsmanship Contest highlights the dedication and drive of individuals in the dairy industry. Herdsmanship Awards are given to individuals or dairy farms demonstrating exemplary exhibit organization, cleanliness and co-operation with fellow exhibitors and show management. This year, Vogue Cattle Co. of Brighton, ON, was named the World Dairy Expo Overall Herdsmanship winner. Congratulations to the entire team at Vogue!

County Show Report ontario’s

DON’T WAIT FOR THE PEOPLE TO COME TO SEE YOUR COW, TAKE THE COW TO THE PEOPLE! Your local county show is not only a great socializing and networking event, but it is also a great marketing opportunity for your herd. Whether you take a string of 20 or just one animal, your farm name gets put on the map and just maybe, the next time someone is looking for a show or sale animal, they will turn up at YOUR barn door. 2016 was another successful year for the county shows across Ontario. Some were up in numbers, some were a bit down, but all in all, the shows were well attended by exhibitors and spectators alike. A lot of work goes into a Holstein show before, during and even after the event itself. Congratulations to all of the breeders and exhibitors of the many outstanding cattle shown at the 30 county shows across Ontario this year!

TwincrestHolsteins BUILDING A FUTURE

A

STORY & PHOTOS BY ANDREA EMOND

“On a scale of 1 to 10, we give the new barn a 12” – Jerry Keunen

fter building a brand new robot barn on his family’s third-generation dairy farm in Caistor Centre, Rick Keunen has some regrets. But they’re not what you might think. According to Rick, the free-flow barn is both cowfriendly and easy to work in. Somatic Cell Counts are down and cow comfort, milk production and longevity are up. “It’s 100 per cent better than it was in the old barn,” Rick says. Still, there’s one thing Rick wishes he had done differently. “I almost wish I would have done it when these guys were young,” he says, nodding to his son, Brad. And, he adds after giving it some more thought, a bigger plug for hoof trimming would have been nice, too.

While relocating the cows to the new barn and getting them accustomed to the robots went smoothly, frozen water pipes in the new barn added an extra headache on moving day. Finding 300 feet of garden hose to provide a temporary water solution on one of the coldest days in February was tricky, and when Rick’s wife, Elaine, called from Canadian Tire to make sure he really wanted to spend $400 on the only hose left in the store, Rick didn’t hesitate. “We need it,” he told her. “We’ve still got some really good hoses left!” says Rick, now able to appreciate the humour in the situation. Today, after 18 months in their new environment, the cows have adjusted remarkably well. The Keunens went from filling 82 kgs of quota with 85 cows in the old barn to filling 101 kgs with 81 animals on the same rations in the new facility. It took about three weeks for the cows to find their groove, Rick says, but once they were comfortable, things really started to ramp up. The herd’s BCA currently sits at 259-263-259, up from 181-191-184 before the move, and milk value has increased by $1500 per cow. The Keunens couldn’t be happier with the result.

All in all, minor details for the large-scale project that took a yearand-a-half to plan and six months to build. During the planning phase, Rick and his family toured countless barns across the province before settling on what would become their final design. The sprawling 70x260-ft, three-row barn boasts two maternity pens and six free-stalls for close-up cows. It’s outfitted with two Lely A4 robots and is almost an exact replica of a robot barn they saw near Peterborough while on tour with their local Lely representative. The Keunens broke ground in May of 2014 and moved the cows over “On a scale of 1 to 10, we give the new barn a 12!” says Jerry Keunen, from the old barn the following February with the help of about 20 Rick’s dad. Approaching 78, Jerry is justifiably proud of what his family has achieved in almost 60 years in Niagara County. His family neighbours. Their dad purchased a farm on sixteenth side the journey to the new barn – a short distance from where the old road, named it Beatrix after his homeland’s then-queen and milked one stands – began. A wall of hay bales and stone screenings on cows there for almost a decade. In 1966, the brothers bought out top of the snow ensured no one slipped and all the cows stayed on their dad and started Twincrest. They continued until 1978 when course. The family started coaxing cows into the robot for their first John purchased his own operation near Drayton. milking at noon and finished about eight hours later. After a quick supper in the barn office, the process started all over again. Another cow the family purchased in the early 1970s, Clayburn Baron Dotty EX 4*, has over 30 descendants in the herd dating back to her.

The family now makes a point of spending time together doing what they love most – fishing on nearby Lake Ontario, getting away for a weekend of camping or vacationing down south in the winter. “I tell everyone, ‘Take time for your family and hug your kids; you never know when they’re going to disappear.’”

These days, lots of good things are happening at Twincrest and the family has much to celebrate. Brad graduated from high school in June and recently started a two-year Agriculture program at Ridgetown. Elysa will complete her studies in Psychology at Laurier in the spring and plans to take an eight-month course specializing in Autism after that. This past July, the family hosted Niagara’s third annual “Dinner at the Dairy” to rave reviews. Over 2,300 people – with an estimated 80 per cent hailing from the city - visited their farm and were treated to wagon rides, barn tours (including front-row seats to the robot), face-painting, bouncy castles and, of course, dinner on hay bales underneath a stunning summer sky. Put on by the Niagara Milk Committee and the Niagara Holstein Club, the volunteer-run event aims to give the public a better understanding of what life on a dairy farm is really like. Although it was a lot of work, the Keunens are glad they did Most days Jerry is still at the farm, either helping in the barn or it. “We’ve received a lot of emails from people telling us how much making feed and his wife, Agnes, still keeps the books. He and they enjoyed it and thanking us for opening our doors,” Rick says. Agnes still maintain shares in the limited company but these days they can make their own hours and get away more easily. They enjoy He adds that they’ll host several groups at the farm this fall, camping trips in the summer and getaways to Florida in the winter. including one from Sweden. Now, more how important that is when planning such a large-scale project. than ever, he and Elaine value every minute they’re able to spend To that end, the Keunens have some advice to share for anyone with their kids. A devastating day two years ago made them realize considering building a new barn. just how valuable that time is. On September 26, 2014, their 17-yearold son, Adam, died after being struck by a front loader during his “Do it for yourself,” says Brad, echoing the advice his dad received first week on a co-op placement not far from the family’s home. from fellow farmers along the way. Though Rick definitely took into A volunteer fireman for the Township of West Lincoln, Rick was account both of his sons’ ideas during the planning process, Brad the first responder on scene. Adam was Brad’s twin brother and a says that ultimately it was important that his dad build a barn he younger brother to Rick and Elaine’s daughter, Elysa. would enjoy working in. Rick and his younger brother, Jeff, were always involved in the farm growing up. Jeff completed his Masters degree in Animal Nutrition at Guelph and today works as a Dairy Nutritionist for Grand Valley Fortifiers, which comes in handy when formulating the farm’s rations. After graduating from Kemptville and working at the Holstein Journal for a year, Rick came home to farm full-time in 1990. He married Elaine, who was raised on a dairy farm in Campbellford, and together, they took over ownership in 2010. Though Elaine’s full-time career as a nurse at the Hamilton General Hospital occupies most of her time, she still helps in the barn whenever she can. She also does a meticulous job on the farm’s landscaping, making sure visitors feel welcomed by well-kept flowerbeds that greet them at the laneway and appear in abundance across the property.

Rick says that when Adam died, he didn’t step foot into the barn for a week. He adds that the support of the neighbours was incredible and anything they needed was provided. Getting back in the barn and picking up some semblance of a routine was tough, but Rick felt he had no choice. “Life doesn’t stop; it’s not easy but you have to keep going.”

Have enough quota to back up your barn is Jerry’s advice. “Buy it first,” he says, “not the other way around.”

Staying busy with the new build helped, and although Adam never got to witness its completion, his presence can be felt all around. The desk is Rick’s office is flanked with photos of the boys smiling together, one twin almost indistinguishable from the other in their brightly coloured dress shirts and flashy ties at grade eight graduation. Adam’s lacrosse and hockey sticks hang on the wall and a large framed photo of him clearing land for the barn’s footings is the first thing you see when you enter the barn. “My daughter calls it my ‘Adam shrine’,” Rick says with a distant chuckle. “It’s all part of the recovery process.”

“If you’re going to do it, do it. If you don’t, we may not have an industry.”

As for Rick’s words of wisdom? “Don’t be shy about doing it,” he says. “We’ve got a decent industry here.”

When people heard Rick was thinking about building, everyone told him, ‘Wait five years.’ His friends at the fire hall balked at the prospect of borrowing over a million dollars to fund the project. But after everything he and his family have been through, Rick’s decision to move forward with the build when he did makes even more sense today. “I’m 48,” he says. “Why not enjoy it now?” www.ontario.holstein.ca

OntarioSummerShow 2016

BY ADRIAN VANDER WIELEN

The 20th annual Ontario Summer Show was judged by Mike Farlinger of Morrisburg, ON and his associate, Kyle Rivington of Carp, ON, in the coverall showring at Lindsay Central Exhibition grounds on July 22, 2016. The day was hot but 239 head showed, marking the fifth largest number of cattle exhibited in Summer Show history. Both judges commented on the honour and privilege it was to judge the wellpresented high-quality cattle on display. Mike congratulated the show committee on the foresight 20 years ago to organize such a long-running and high-calibre show. Grand Champion went to the winning four-yearold, Bosdale Gold Luster, owned by Quality Holsteins of Vaughan, ON, Beckridge Holsteins of Keswick, ON, Oscar Dupasquier of Guelph, ON and Agriber Societa Agricola SLR of Italy. Reserve was earned by the second place four-year-old, Morsan Dempsey Della, owned by Trent Valley Holsteins of Peterborough, ON, Tim & Sharyn Abbott of Fairfield, VT, and Jason David Mell of Merrill, WI. Honourable Mention went to Nipponia R D Lizabeth, the winning entry of the show’s new Production Class (Lifetime over 60,000 kgs of milk). Reserve 4-H Champion was Kyle Campsall of Woodville with his project, Corrcroft Doorman Chita, and Honourable Mention went to Vanessa Crowley with Crovalley Armani Alareece. A recent addition to the showring is the Junior All-Ontario competition for exhibitors aged 15-25. The show featured 19 head exhibited by 11 young individuals with Jessica Brown of Lilyking Farm earning Junior Champion on Lilyking DM Firstlily of Elginburg, ON. Reserve went to Christine Armstrong of Royal Lynn Holsteins with Royal Lynn Solomons Desire and Honourable Mention was Century Star Doorman Magic, exhibited by Spencer Nelson of Century Star Holsteins of Elmvale, ON. Premier Breeder & Exhibitor banners were won by Kingsway Farms and for the Junior show, were split with Kingsway earning the Junior Breeder banner and Crovalley Holsteins taking Junior Premier Exhibitor. One of the constant strengths of the success of the show is energy and enthusiasm provided by the East-Central district 4-H members as they compete in the showmanship and clipping competitions. Championship 4-H showmanship honours went to top Intermediate, Mariah Beckett, followed by Senior Showperson, Vanessa Crowley, and Honourable Mention to the winning Junior, Caden Finley. Lily Beckett won the Novice class. Earning the Champion Clipper Award was Evan Stanley, followed by Connor Sikma and Emma Allen. The Ontario Summer show continues to be recognized as one of the premier shows in Canada. This is due in large part to the efforts of a hardworking show committee and the great support of area sponsors. The 2017 show is scheduled for July 28th - we look forward to seeing you there!

The team was made up of Brett Stockdale of Durham East, Laura DeKlein of Middlesex, Josh Karn of Oxford and Collin Allardyce of Brant and together with coach Murray Reissner, they travelled to Expo to compete. Because this is a national competition, the Ontario team placings are not recognized at the banquet; however the team does receive a set of scores and placings from the organizing committee. Nerves were high heading into the competition but after a day of “Go Big or Go Home” judging, the Ontario team was thrilled with their fifth-place finish, Ontario’s secondbest score to date!

In the Senior 3-Year-Old class, Ontario-bred Beaverbrock Goldwyn Zoey-ET took fifth place and Walnutlawn McCutchen Summer was seventh for Dave Dyment. Kingsway once again fared well in the Best Three Females class, this time on the cow side, claiming an impressive third place finish. In the 4-Year-Old class, all eyes were on Windy-Knoll-View Pantene, the cow owned by Reese Burdette of Mercersburg, PA. Burdette endured burns to more than 35 per cent of her body and suffered damage to her heart and lungs from smoke inhalation during a house fire at her grandparents’ home in 2014. During her long and intense recovery process that saw her spend over 600 days in hospital, it was her favourite cow, Pantene, that kept her fighting. Reese returned “home to the cows” in March, just in time to start training for show season. Her mom, Claire, showed Pantene to a third-place finish in the 4-Year-Old class and claimed Best Bred and Owned. It was a touching moment for everyone in attendance. This year’s show lived up to its expectations and provided some wonderful memories for everyone watching in Madison or right here at home. Congratulations to all the Canadian-bred animals that walked on the gold shavings at this year’s World Dairy Expo! the

Eastern Ontario Western Quebec Championship Show Turns 75!

BY KRIS MACLEOD

The 75th Anniversary of the Eastern Ontario Western Quebec Show took place on October 13, 2016 in Metcalfe, ON. By noon, 120 heifers were shown to Judge Mike Heath of Maryland, US and he commented several times on the quality and depth in the classes and how impressed he was with what these breeders had to present. Of the eight heifer classes, five had Bred and Owned winners. Junior Champion went to the winning Senior Calf, T-TripleT-Ent Paparazzi-ET owned by Velthuis Farms Ltd. of Osgoode, ON. Velthuis Farms also took home Reserve Junior Champion with Intermediate Yearling Milksource Sid Desire while Honourable Mention went to the winning Summer Yearling, Brismer Dempsey Sugar owned by Jean-Guy Brisson & Betty Mercier of QC. Seven Junior Herds came out this year and taking home first place was Peter Rylaarsdam of Winchester followed by Riverdown Holsteins of Metcalfe, ON and Signature Holsteins of Morrisburg, ON. Both Junior banners were won by Peter Rylaarsdam. Runner up Premier Breeder was a tie between Signature Holsteins and Riverdown Holsteins. The Runner-up Exhibitor was Velthuis Farms Ltd.

A 60,000 Kg Production Class was added the night before the show and it ended up with five strong entries. Signature Holsteins of Morrisburg, ON took home both

In the afternoon Kelly Fawcett made a speech about the show’s history. Cake and coffee was served after the show as part of the 75th anniversary celebration. A number of the founding committee members were on hand to see the show and must have been proud to see what they had started all those years ago still going strong today.

The EOWQ Show has always had a strong committee behind it. According to Karen Velthuis, the “very small group of multitalented volunteers” is a big part of what makes the 75-year-old show so successful. PHOTO SUBMITTED

Before selecting his Grand Champion, Judge Heath thanked everyone for inviting him to judge such a special show. He was very impressed with the quality of animals brought out for him and was proud to have been a part of the 75th Anniversary. He selected his winning 4-Year-Olds as Grand and Reserve - Lochdale Windbrook Rena owned by Lochdale Holsteins of Alexandria, ON and Hendercroft Fever Bazooka owned by Herbert Henderson of Ashton, ON. B What is your connection to the show?

D

HUGH HUNTER, Exhibitor I’ve been going there since I was a kid. My family started show there in the 1960’s – 1963 was the first year. I was actually born the day before the show in 1976 so I guess you could say it’s been part of my life literally since the day I was born! That year, my dad had planned to take some head down but instead my grandfather ended up taking them in a snowstorm and a neighbour looked after the cows. I turn 40 this year so we’ve been at it a lot of the years!

KAREN VELTHUIS, Exhibitor & Committee Member We have been exhibitors at this show for as long as I can remember. When it was part of the Ottawa Winter Fair in the 60’s, 70’s, and 80’s, my mom and her friends always put together a feast for the Hospitality Hour at the completion of the show. I joined the committee in 1983 and have worked on many aspects including advertising, awards, food, sponsorship, photography and 4-H showmanship. With the event now being held in Metcalfe, my focus has shifted to the little What’s made the show so successful? details that are much easier for a person who lives five minutes away to organize. I guess you could call me a middleman now! KAREN: A number of factors have contributed: the continuous energy and dedication shown by a very small group of multi-talented KELLY MATHERS, Exhibitor & Committee Member volunteers along with the tireless efforts of some very dedicated My great-grandfather and great-uncle were exhibitors at the show and KCAT staff (Albert Koekkoek, Ben Melenhorst and Gord Black); my grandfather and dad and uncle have all shown over the years. I’ve a group of exceptional sponsors who have the will to see the show shown here, too, and this year my daughter Taylor led her 4-H calf, strive; talented judges, many of whom have officiated at major shows making up the fifth generation of our family to be involved! I was also throughout the world; the exhibitors, a large number of whom have part of the committee for five years. It felt great to be able to carry on been part of this show for generations; and last but not least, the something my grandpa and dad have been involved in for so many quality of cattle, which attracts a large following each year. Through years and it was a nice committee to work with. Everyone has their set the years, Holstein Field Reps Grant Smith, Lynn Boyd and Kris responsibilities and many hands make light work. I’m also involved on MacLeod have also put a lot of effort into making this show tick! the sponsorship side of things with TD Bank. LOIS KEYES, Show Secretary I worked for Eastern Breeders at the time and was the show’s Secretary and Treasurer up until 2002. I was responsible for sending entry forms out, putting together the catalogues and looking after the financials. I remember it being quite a bit of work back then as everything was done by hand! It was a wonderful experience though – I met a wide range of people and broadened my circle of friends.

KELLY: Good engagement – all the way from exhibitors and a strong, organized show committee to the show’s generous sponsors who have been involved year after year to support its continuation. Also, the committee has always been really focused on running a clean show and ensuring the animals coming into the ring haven’t been tampered with. I think that’s something the show can be proud of.

SANDY SNEDDEN, Judge & Exhibitor My dad was always a strong supporter of the show. He showed at the first show and every year after that. We used to take a whole tractortrailer load along – sometimes up to 26 head! I also had the privilege of judging the show in 1988. I had judged all over Eastern Ontario, but to be asked to judge this show was quite special as they didn’t normally get judges from the area who knew all the exhibitors. It didn’t seem to bother me though – I just looked at the animal and not the person leading her and made a decision from there.

DON: I think a combination of things. Originally the show was just for Eastern Ontario and Pontiac but they’ve expanded it over the years so that’s helped. Also, Eastern Ontario has always been very breeder-oriented which instills a sense of pride. It’s not someone coming in, buying 12 cattle and sweeping the show. It’s local breeders who have done their own breeding showing their best animals. It’s like any competition - if someone comes in really strong, it’s hard to compete. At this show, everyone has a chance.

LOIS: The location in Kemptville had a lot to do with the show’s DON CARSS, Exhibitor success. Taking it out of the city and into a bigger area helped. It has We’ve been involved in the show since the early 60’s. We used to show always been a well-run show with a good reputation and people are a full string every year and always took the limit you were able to show! eager to get out to it each year.

SANDY: Well, the Fieldman Grant Smith had a lot to do with it. He was very personable and encouraged people to show. In those days, he would come to the farm and help you select which animals to take. He was very knowledgeable, always smiling and everyone liked him. In forty years on the job, he made quite an impact. The Fawcetts had a lot to do with it too. HUGH: It’s the show’s volunteer committee. There’s a pretty devoted group involved and I give a lot of credit to them for keeping it so well organized, even through the moves that have taken place. It’s a really classy show, really well done and a nice one to show at. Also, there’s a core group of breeders from Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec who always bring a few head and have for years.

What are some of your fondest memories?

KAREN: Some of my memories from this show centre around great individual animals while others are more concentrated on the people I have met, and in many instances, they are some of my best friends! Back in the 80’s, there was always a Bull Calf class for bulls who were born in October to December. In 1980 we won with Riverdown Senator Gilligan. Bob Lang, Assistant Manager at EBI, presented me with some Holstein cuff links as my prize. He was most embarrassed to be giving me a male-oriented prize so he got them made into a necklace and earrings. When he brought them to the farm a short time later, we had a great visit and we negotiated what was the start of my AI career at EBI. Another time, we took out three Summer Yearlings who lined up 1-2-3. The first one – a member of our Lynn family - was Reserve Junior Champion and went on to do well at the Royal. Most recently, we were thrilled to win the Junior Premier Breeder and Exhibitor Banners in 2015. KELLY: Coming to the show is something I always look forward to each fall and it’s hard to pinpoint just one memory that stands out. I remember being really happy when my uncle’s cow - Rainbowvalley T T Chandra EX 6E 5* – won first 4-year-old in 1990. I always enjoy singing O’Canada at the start of the show. I’ve done this for the past 15 years and in years past, my great uncle Ralph Fawcett used to sing too. This year I was honoured to provide commentary on the show’s history and help with the 75th Anniversary celebration. LOIS: The people. Being involved in the committee that moved the show was a lot of fun too. It was a new venture and with a lot of different aspects to it including designing a logo. It was an exciting time!

www.ontario.holstein.ca

G DON: We were Premier Breeder 17 times and runner-up quite a few times too. It’s always a great show to visit with all the other breeders. Certainly when they moved to Kemptville – it was a good move. It added to the atmosphere of the show. Showing the cattle and always visiting with the other breeders is what I remember most. I also remember back in 1966 my dad had one of his best cows there – Sandy Crest Ragapple Anne. He showed her there as a calf, Junior Yearling and a 2-year-old and she won her class every year. My mom wouldn’t let us go to the show with dad as we were just little. Instead we stayed home and waited for Frank Ryan of CFRA Radio in Ottawa to come on and give his noon hour update. When we found out Anne was Junior Champion that day, we were pretty excited! She was sold that same day on her way out of the ring It’s always been a great show and a great time. It’s in good hands now. SANDY: We had Grand Champion three times, twice with homebred animals. Mississippi Rag Apple Fury VG-85 was our most recent one in 1979. I have lots of memories from the show. I remember my dad would pretty near stay up all night to make sure the cows stayed clean. Then, he’d have a big pot of coffee on in the morning and everyone would gather round and talk. There was a friendship amongst the breeders – I think that’s what’s kept it going for so long. HUGH: My personal memories are of being a young kid and going into the big city of Ottawa for the show as in those days, it was held at Landsdowne Park. I remember being nine years old going along with my dad. The cows were tied in this big old building that we called the “cattle castle” and you had to walk them down this long tunnel, which was kind of like a hole in the ground. It was a cold, tough place by the time we were done showing cows there and the show moved to Kemptville but it has since been restored to a beautiful building. We also won a few banners and have had Reserve and Honourable Mention. I’m kind of proud of the fact that we’ve been showing at EO/WQ for three generations – my grandfather, Donald, my father Gerald and myself have all had the pleasure of showing there. PHOTOS:

Lois Keyes (l) was the show’s secretary up until 2002 and presented many awards, including this one in 1988. Sandy Snedden judged that year’s show. D. Riverdown Kassie Lynn was a prominent Summer Yearling who did well at both the EO/WQ Show and The Royal in the early 90’s. E. Allison Fawcett has been a part of the show since its inception. His great granddaughter, Taylor, pictured with him here, makes up five generations of the Fawcett family’s involvement. F. Flowers were presented on behalf of Tessa Dwyre, who was a member of the Ontario Dairy Judging Team Bert coached in 2001.

The sun was shining and the barns were hot, but that didn’t stop 86 junior and senior 4-H members from across the province from participating in the 27th Annual Inter-County Judging Competition on July 28 at the Ilderton Fairgrounds in Ilderton, Ontario. Participants began the day by writing a quiz based on material from the “You Be The Judge” manual, which all young judges use to hone their skills. After completing the 50-point quiz, the 4-Her’s headed to the barns to evaluate three classes of Holsteins, three classes of Jerseys, and one class each of Guernseys, Ayrshires and Brown Swiss cattle.

European Young Breeders School: Back from Belgium ON AUGUST 29, 2016 SIX AMBITIOUS AND ENTHUSIASTIC CANADIANS BEGAN THEIR TRAVELS TO THE EUROPEAN YOUNG BREEDERS SCHOOL (EYBS) IN BATTICE, BELGIUM. OUR ONTARIO AMBASSADORS, AVA AND CAMERON, SHARE THEIR EXPERIENCE BELOW.

E

EYBS is a week long competition that sees over one hundred young dairy enthusiasts coming from 13 different countries around the world. It is designed to teach all aspects of training and preparing animals for shows, along with courses in marketing dairy genetics and learning about different classification systems. Ava Doner and Cameron Stockdale from Ontario, Maxime Montplaisir and Julie MacFarlane from Quebec, Kathryn McCully from Prince Edward Island and Katelyn Crest from Ava Doner sets up her calf in the showmanship Alberta were thrilled to be Canada’s ambassadors on competition. PHOTO: HOLSTEIN QUEBEC a trip that they will never forget. The first day of our trip was filled with so many emotions. We were excited to meet up with our team, eager to see the beautiful country of Belgium, and anxious to find out what the week was going to bring. We arrived to the capital of Belgium where we got to spend the day exploring local venues and touring local dairy farms including the Belgium Blue bull facility. We also got to meet our host families for the first time. Most of the host families lived on a dairy farm, giving us the opportunity to learn more about the dairy industry in Belgium and connect with international breeders. Additionally, during our free nights with our host families, we were able to go on a hike that looked over Holland, drive around town in a fire truck and enjoy various local cuisines!

classes and finished the day with Maxime’s calf being named Junior Champion of the show! After the show, we had a big barn party where each team had a national food and/or drink from their country for the rest of the competitors to enjoy. We went around to each display where we got to meet everyone that we hadn’t met already, dance to their country’s music and share many laughs!

Our first competition day was Saturday, where we began with conformation classes put on to thank the breeders for allowing us to use their animals. We had the opportunity to show cattle for a very reputable breeder in Belgium: Hautmont Hill Holsteins. Team Canada was extremely happy with how our heifers performed with Judge Yan Jacobs from Ferme Jacobs, Quebec. We all placed well in our

and celebrate the week with them on our last night in Belgium. We were soon back on the plane to return to our homes Canada, but the memories and friendships that we made in Belgium will be forever remembered and cherished.

The next morning was the day we had all been waiting for! The calves were sparkling, the tails were fluffed and our whites were on. It was the time to demonstrate everything we had practiced and waited months for. When we got to Belgium, we agreed we were not there to do well for just ourselves, but also for our country. We were there to represent Canada to the best of our ability and we were overwhelmed with the support we had from back home throughout the entire competition. Canada’s support pushed us to work harder in Belgium and gave us the confidence that we needed to perform well. At the end of the day, we were extremely happy with our placings, which included two firsts (Maxime Mont pla iser and Ava Doner), a second (Katelyn Crest), two thirds (Cameron Stockdale and Kathryn McCully) and a fifth (Julie Team Canada showing some red and white pride! l to r: Katelyn Crest, Cameron Stockdale, Julie MacFarlane, Kathryn McCully, Ava Doner and Maxime Montplaiser. Memories of Madison

BY LAURA SCHUURMAN

Cows, cheese, steak and football: all part of this year's trip

T

This year marked the 50th anniversary of the World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin, and I was privileged to be able to attend. The Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund sponsors a group of four young dairy producers to travel to the Expo for a week, visiting farms and area attractions along the way. Jason Gould, of Gouldhaven Farms, John Werry of Loa-De-Mede, Derek Van Dieten of Van Dieten Farms, and myself, Laura Schuurman of Summitholm Holsteins were selected as this year’s participants. With Ontario Holstein Branch rep Kris MacLeod as our guide, we made our way down to Madison over the course of two-and-a half days. Our first tour stop was just a few hours past the border in Michigan. Mooville Dairy is run by the Westendorp family. They milk 240 cows using four Lely robots. In an effort to diversify and create ways for all 6 of their children to stay involved, the Westendorps started an on-farm processing plant when their youngest children (triplets!) were in high school. The farm has since become a local agri-tourism destination, with a petting zoo, cafe, and processing plant. They produce several different milks, over 50 flavours of ice cream, and cheese curds. Another few hours of driving brought us to the south side of Chicago for the night. Tuesday brought four new farms to tour, two in the state of Illinois, and two in Wisconsin. The first farm of the morning was Luck-E Holsteins, specializing in red and white Holstein genetics. The family milks 200 Holsteins in a 38 cow tiestall (yes, you read that correctly!) After seeing the amount of work that the Engel family and their interns put into just getting the cows milked every day, we all agreed that we felt a bit lazy. Highlights of the Luck-E farm included seeing several family members of the bull Awesome Red and Adonis Red. Golden Oaks was the next farm on the list, a large operation just outside the suburbs of Chicago. Owned by the Crown family (who also own parts of several professional sports teams), the farm milks around 630 cows. It is a sand-bedded free-stall facility with a focus on type breeding. Heading to Budjon Farms brought us into Wisconsin, to the town of Lomira. The Cull family farms here, with over 400 head of cattle on site. Having been heavily invested in the business of showing

cattle for many years, the farm took a slightly different direction a few years ago when they decided to become a boarding facility as well. Today approximately one third of the cattle on site are their own, with the others being elite show or genetic cows. They house many cows from Alta Genetics Peak program. John Cull estimates that the majority of the farms income still comes from genetic sales, with milk production and boarding equally contributing the rest. Our last stop was Westphalia farms. The work force consists of a father, a son, another son part-time, and a daughter-in-law part-time. They milk 85 cows in a free-stall with a heavy emphasis on type. No cow in the barn has a pedigree with any less than a Very Good classification. Wednesday morning we switched gears slightly, heading to Vir-Clar farms near Fond du Lac, Wisconsin. A 1500 milking head operation, the farm has undergone drastic expansion in the last 20 years. Having bought out his parents in 1995, Gary Boyke increased the size to 300 milking head. The expansion continued in segments over the years to become what it is today. Today Gary and his wife have stepped back a bit, allowing their adult children to take over the day to the overseeing of the farm and its employees. They are currently cropping over 3,000 acres and running a successful manure digester in an effort to help with public relations. A short jog from Fond du Lac brought us to Ragnar farms, home of the Ulness family. Mark and Angie and their four children run this 50 cow tie-stall operation with great pride. All crop work is custom done so that the family can focus on what they enjoy and what they do best: milk and breed good cows. This was another farm with a heavy red factor presence. Mark admitted to having to revamp his breeding strategy slightly in recent years, having been caught several times by the Haplotype associated with Cholesterol Deficiency (HCD) gene. Sunnyside farms milks around 300 cows three times a day in a double-8 parlour. Production averages over 30, 000 lbs of milk. The barn is tunnel ventilated and the stalls are sand bedded. Sunnyside places an emphasis on type and has a small pen separate from the www.ontario.holstein.ca

Sudbury 4- H’ers take Orono Junior Show by Storm FOR MANY YOUNG 4-H’ERS AND THEIR LEADERS AND PARENTS, ATTENDING ONE OF THE PROVINCE’S FOUR JUNIOR SHOWS EACH SUMMER IS AN EXCITING ENDEAVOUR. right at home there now. Working two-weeks-on, two-weeks-off as a Maintenance Supervisor on Baffin Island means that Steve was free to help trailer the calves to Orono and lend a hand where needed. While down for the week, he was lucky enough to be able to catch up with his old friend from high school, Charlie Stuart, who was busy getting ready to host the Northumberland Twilight Meeting. Steve and Keith also took several 4-H’ers to attend the local judging night for Dufferin East where members had the chance to judge everything from raspberries to garden tools and meet many new people at the same time. They had no trouble filling their time from the end of the Orono Show to the kick-off of EastGen Challenge, where several senior members competed later in the week. Opportunities for youth in the north are sometimes few and far between but Keith and his wife, Dianne, are doing what they can to make sure local 4-H’ers take advantage of the ones that are available. The Massey club was able to access the Northern Ontario Promotion www.ontario.holstein.ca

Budget Program made available by the Ontario Holstein Branch to assist those living in the north with travel expenses incurred when taking part in events far from home. Since some of the calves were competing at EastGen Challenge on Friday and the Orono Show wrapped up on Tuesday, boarding the animals was another consideration. Fortunately, Keith’s connection to 4-H and his friendship with Durham East 4-H Leader, Angela Fairfield, came in handy and all nine calves stayed at her farm between shows. Though sleeping in a tent may not have been everyone’s idea of a good time, all of the kids were great sports and left Southern Ontario with a handful of ribbons and several new friendships to show for it. If all goes according to plan, Keith says, one year the senior members will come down to compete in the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic, which would mark another first for Massey 4-H. “For some of these kids, just to come and experience the Royal would be life-changing!” the

A NEW EXCELLENT COW OR A VERY GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLD IS A BREEDING ACCOMPLISHMENT. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. From June 2016 through to the end of August 2016, there were 655 1st time Excellent cows and 960 Very Good two-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. Congratulations to the owners and breeders of Ontario’s new 1st time Excellent cows and Very Good two-year-olds! EX’S

Holstein Canada’s New Herd Enrollment Program Just-a-Dream,

T

SOUTH MOUNTAIN, ON

BY KRIS MACLEOD

JUNE 1, 2013 WAS A MEMORABLE DAY FOR DWYER AND CHANTAL PENK. IT WAS THE DAY THEY PURCHASED A FARM IN DUNDAS COUNTY AND BEGAN TO REALIZE A LIFELONG DREAM OF BECOMING DAIRY FARMERS. The farm came with 60 kgs of quota plus 180 acres of land and was a good start for the young couple. Realizing the benefits of owning purebred, registered animals, the Penks decided to take out a membership with Holstein Canada and chose “Just-A-Dream” as their prefix.

the paper trail that the registration process provides and allows them to keep track of lineage. They have also just started using the Progen Mating Program from EastGen now that the younger cattle are all in Holstein Canada’s system. In past years, bulls were selected for feet and legs, mammary and conformation, followed by milk and fat and the Penks plan to use the same criteria going forward. On the land side, the family now works 260 acres in total. Dwyer and Chantal held off on classification until this past February as they wanted to wait until they had some animals to do under their own prefix. During their first classification, several cows went Very Good, with most of the balance going Good Plus. They plan to continue to classify yearly and value the information it gives them to work with on the mating side. In the first year they owned the farm, a fire destroyed an old dairy barn that was being to house young heifers. Thankfully, all of the animals were saved. The couple now houses anywhere from 20 to 40 heifers at Chantal’s parents place, Thurler Farms. Calves are moved there after weaning and return once they’ve been bred and are a few months away from calving. Because Thurlers are doing a number of flushes on their herd, some of Chantal and Dwyer’s heifers are getting implanted with embryos which is helping to give them a boost up with genetics.

Chantal and Dwyer Penk at Headline Dairy Ltd. with their daughter, Kylie (18 months) and son, Carson (4 months). PHOTO SUBMITTED

Record keeping had fallen by the wayside under the previous owners and initially only 14 out of 90 animals qualified for registration. Many of these included cows that Dwyer and Chantal had purchased from herds in Western Ontario. With the help of Western Ontario Field Rep, Angela Howard, the necessary breeding information needed to process the cows was obtained. All of the animals the Penks have purchased since have always been purebred. Since the original purchase three years ago, a lot has changed at Headline Dairy. Detailed records are kept and all animals are registered as they are born. In addition to growing their herd, Dwyer and Chantal also started a family of their own. Kylie is 18 months and Carson is 3 months. They have been milk recording since the start and because they now have enough identified two-year-olds, they’re currently in the process of changing over to publishable records. Production has been steadily increasing and the Penks are currently filling 80 kgs of quota with 60 head, milking three times a day with some hired help. Cows are averaging 39 kgs per day with an unofficial BCA of 229-237-225. They like www.ontario.holstein.ca

Future plans include growing the herd to between 150-200 head in the next 10 years and building a new barn along the way to house them. The Penks plan to continue to register and upgrade their herd over time as well as increase their milk production. “Just a Dream” is a fitting prefix for a dedicated family like the Penks who are working hard to make their dreams a reality.

EXPERIENCE THE BENEFITS OF ANIMAL REGISTRATION AND CLASSIFICATION! • Available to all herds who have not classified in two or more years. • Herd consultation visit with an experienced classifier. Discuss the benefits of classification and how the information can be used on farm. • No charge herd visit fee (regular or mid round) for first classification. • For qualifying herds with no registration activity for 3 or more years the program will also offer:

– Registration fee discounted by 50% for all animals (excluding base) registered within 6 months of commitment to the program. – No charge to transfer ownership of animals resident in the herd prior. – To qualify for the registration savings herds must agree to participate in at least one classification visit. • Ontario Holstein Field staff are available to help you with registration.

Branch News

Congratulations Adrian!

Adrian Vander Wielen Marks 30 Years!

Adrian's passion for Holsteins was ignited on his family's dairy farm in Glengarry County where he was involved in 4-H growing up. He is the oldest of eight children, four of which are still dairy farming today. After completing his Master’s Degree in Dairy Science in 1983, he took a position at Ridgetown College as a Researcher and Lecturer. On September 1, 1986, he was hired to replace Gerry Nelson as Field Man, or as we now call it, Holstein Rep for the EastCentral district. Since that time, Adrian has accomplished many great things in this position. In addition to registering herds and signing up new members in 18 counties (10 in East-Central, two in WestCentral and six in the North), Adrian capably assists clubs with their annual shows, AGMs, planning meetings, banquets, twilights, and more recently, Breeders’ Cups. He is an instrumental part of the Ontario Summer Show each year and organizes the Junior Show Adrian was recently honoured for his 30 years of Service with the Branch at the Ontario Summer Show. in Orono every July. He recently celebrated 34 years of marriage to Congratulating him are (l to r) Peter Brand, Sandy O'Hara, Meg Vander Wielen, Tara Bullock, Angela Meg and has four adult children: Tina, Hannah, Ben and Darian. In Howard and Kris MacLeod. Lovshin Holsteins has been operated by the Lovshin family of Cobourg, ON since the 1960’s. PHOTO SUBMITTED 1. What is your family’s history with Holsteins? Mom and Dad (Lois and Norm) started farming in the mid 60’s. Since then, the herd and farm has grown. It now supports the immediate family, with both sons (Mark and Dan) now part of the operation. We are a two-time Master Breeder and close to a third Master Breeder.

7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be? We are tight for space. It would be nice to have more room for heifers and dry cows. 8. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out that you wish you had been told? Cull your cows with poor udder health as much as possible. The milk cheque is what pays the bills.
