HOME IS WHERE THE COWS ARE! Happy New Year to you! I hope you all got to enjoy some quiet time during this busy holiday season, surrounded by those you love and embraced by the comforts of home. Everyone has their own idea of what makes a house a home, and the transformation from one to the other takes time (and a lot of hard work)! Not only have the renovations we are busy completing at the fixer upper we purchased last year taught me that, but a recent visit to Almet Farms - home of Maifield Holsteins - really drove the point home! In the five years since purchasing their current farm, Ron and Brenda Metcalf and their adult children have shuffled houses, amalgamated five different Holstein prefixes, renovated two barns and managed to run a successful dairy and laying operation in the meantime. There have been some sleepless nights, for sure, but if you ask them today, they would do it all again in a heartbeat! Today, the renovated brick barn is simply stunning; the retrofitted parlour is spic and span and working well; and the level of cow comfort at this place is second to none. The folks at Almet Farms have created a new home for themselves, where the cows are thriving, and they, too, are happy. Read more about their journey on page 44. Wishing you and yours a wonderful 2019, wherever you may call home! Andrea Emond, Link Editor thelink@ontario.holstein.ca • 519-209-5553

LOOKING FORWARD TO 2019!

To say this has been a challenging year would be an understatement. Dairy farmers across Canada have had everything thrown at them, forcing difficult conversations and number-crunching as farmers figure out how to thrive in a crucial industry within a demanding world. Despite these difficulties, dairy farmers across Canada, including our Ontario Holstein members, have persevered. Every conversation I have with our members, I continue to be blown away by the dedication and passion for milking cows, or as I like to think of it, feeding the country. It takes great courage and determination to push through times like this, and I commend every dairy farmer for their strength in doing so. As a Branch, we are looking at this changing industry as an opportunity to ensure the Branch is meeting the needs of our members. As the industry changes, it is understandable that our members’ needs will also change, and we must be prepared to step up and meet those needs. Your voice plays an integral piece in shaping the future of your Holstein Ontario Branch. Please consider sharing your thoughts on the future of your Branch with your directors, or consider joining us at our AGM in Peterborough (see page 9 for info) for discussion. Thank you for your dedication in 2018, and may we work together for a successful 2019 and beyond!

Tidelywinks One of the best gifts we received at the office this Christmas was a book written by a longstanding Holstein member John Sonneveld of Bath, Ont. The story features a premature calf named Tidelywinks, and chronicles her day-to-day adventures growing up on the farm. John wrote the book to teach children that farmers really do care about their animals and want to see them succeed. His granddaughter helped illustrate the story and loves to share it with her friends from school. The book is available for $15 through John directly (613-354-4574).

Thank you Secretaries!! A big shout out to the following club secretaries, each of whom have been an integral part of their county club for 10 years! Matt Bailey – Hastings; Brandy Matheson – Renfrew; Joe Krol – Stormont. Thank you for all you do! PHOTOS SUBMITTED.

Hooray for New Halters!

Three Generations

The Mitchell 4-H Dairy Club held their annual Achievement Day at the Mitchell Fall Fair. All first year members were pleased to receive show halters from the Perth Holstein Club. Presenting the halters on behalf of the Perth County Holstein Club is Ontario Holstein Director Hans Pfister and grandson Ben. PHOTO SUBMITTED.

Heather Peart of Into Holsteins shared this photo of three generations on the farm. Dougal Lea Toby Triscuit (r) is out of a cow that she purchased at the Dougal Lea dispersal in May 2008. Her daughter, Toblerone (Gold Chip), is shown in the middle, and her granddaughter, Twix (Potter), is pictured at left. It has taken 10 years to develop this family, but they’ve certainly been worth the wait! PHOTO BY HEATHER PEART.

96x96=Two awesome cows! Congratulations to Hendercroft Holsteins, who achieved Canada’s first 96x96 dam/daughter duo in the fall!! As confirmed by Holstein Canada, only 38 cows have ever reached 96 pts nationally, and only 23 of these have ever produced EX daughters. Hendercroft Lheros Gumball scored EX-96 in 2010; her daughter Hendercroft Fever Bazooka achieved the same feat in October, while standing in the same stall as her mother stood in eight years ago! What an achievement - congrats to everyone at Hendercroft on taking the breed to new heights! DESIGN BY EMMA CALDWELL.

he question reads like a riddle straight out of a fifth grade joke book, meant to get you all caught up in the details before you realize the answer is right in front of you: What do you get when you cross a 22,000 hen laying operation with five Holstein prefixes and various quota holdings, mix in 1,100 acres of land, several direct family members, two sons-in-laws and five houses? For most people, the punch line would be: ‘a whole lot of trouble!’ For the folks at Almet Farms in Tyrone, Ont., the answer leans toward something more positive. You get a successful corporation led by an ambitious family, who in five years’ time, has come to realize that going out on a limb is one of the best decisions they’ve ever made. As Brenda Metcalf notes over coffee and homemade treats from her kitchen one brisk afternoon in late November, the major changes that have taken place within the family’s farm in recent years are best appreciated when the farm’s history, dating back to 1921, is explained. That was the year that her husband Ron’s grandfather, Norman Metcalf, began farming. Ron’s father, Alvin, later took over the dairy herd starting the Almet prefix and added chickens in the late 1960s. Ron quit school to farm full time in 1968, and in 1973, he added his Metdale prefix so he could register cattle of his own. Today, Ron and Brenda continue to play a major role and their children and grandchildren make up the fourth and fifth generation to be involved in this dynamic and thriving operation located 20 km northeast of Oshawa.

In 2007, Ron and Brenda’s daughter, Nancy, and her husband, Dan Aitken, became part of the team. Dan hailed from Master Breeder herd Aitkenbrae in Holstein, Ontario, and as a past Dairy Specialist with Grand Valley Fortifiers and Classifier for Holstein Canada, you could say cows were in his blood. In fact, he and Nancy actually met while Dan was classifying cows at her family’s farm. They have been happily married since 2004 and have a 12-year-old son, Rylan, who loves hockey, baseball and life on the farm. When Dan and Nancy joined the operation, they added several bloodlines to the herd from the Honeyfield prefix they held together, some of which had originally come from Dan’s home farm. After several years of hard work, overcoming the hurdles of merging four different herds together, things were going well and everyone had settled into roles that kept them busy, yet content. That’s why it came as such a surprise when, one year after Thanksgiving dinner, Ron announced to the family out of the blue, “I think we should buy Willsona.” “We all looked at him and thought, ‘really?’” says Brenda, thinking back to an idea that seemed so far-fetched at the time. “We finished our pie and went on with the week.” That was October 2012, and a week later when the family met for Sunday supper, they started considering the idea more seriously and discussing ways they could make it happen. On February 14, 2013, they signed the deal, and three months later, they took over Willsona Farm “lock, stock and barrel,” as Brenda says. Even the shovels leaning www.ontario.holstein.ca

day, with the cows milked and happily settling in, the family was back in the house by 7:30 p.m. for supper. The first day had gone smoothly, The family began working with the Willsona cattle at the new location but the coming months would be marked by a series of challenges that in May of that year, while still milking the Almet herd 15 minutes away could only be overcome with lots of trial and error. in Bowmanville and looking after the 22,000 hen laying operation there. At the same time, they were making improvements to the empty “You literally go from a spot you know inside out and backwards,” tie-stall barn that had stood at Willsona for the better part of 60 years says Dan, “to walking in the first day and you aren’t sure where the in order to be able to house all of the cows in one location. In the Spring of 2013, Ron and Brenda’s youngest daughter, Emily, and her husband, Spencer, joined the team, along with their three children, Jack (9), Ruby (6) and Emmett (4). Spencer had been working as a site manager for new home builds and was looking forward to a change. His formal training as a carpenter came in handy during the renovation process and move to the new farm. Shortly after gaining possession of the property, windows in the original barn were replaced in the tiestall and lighting was changed to be more efficient. Cement mangers were removed and matting was added with an eye on cow comfort. In the years that followed, major changes took place in the free-stall, too, where stalls were changed to accommodate sand-bedding in the fresh group, head rails were raised and stalls were opened up at the front.

“The first little while was spent straightening the ship out.” One of the first challenges they faced that winter was frozen water lines. Or more to the point, figuring out which of the five wells they draw water from was causing the problem. Another obstacle was that the previous owner had passed away, so the information they were able to glean from the hired help was limited. Still, they were thankful for whatever insight could be shared, and over the years, have continued to build on that knowledge. Five years on, they think they have it figured out.

Almet Farms is a corporation, and as the sign at the end of the treeline lane reads, it’s now home to Maifield Holsteins. With four preexisting prefixes in the mix, the family decided to start fresh with one December 12, 2013 was move-in day, or as Brenda clearly remembers all-encompassing name that would signify the start of a new chapter it, “one of the coldest days that year!” They milked in Bowmanville in in their lives and sort out some confusion at the same time. Adding two sons-in-law to the mix provided an extra layer of complexity, and as The farm is very much a family affair, and everyone here has an Brenda explains in the nicest way possible, you can say things to your important role to play. we come to the barn every morning.” They have 30 Excellent cows in such as theirs. “Don’t be afraid, particularly in a debt situation. I know the herd and many more Very Good’s. it is easier said than done, but take the chance.” Dan’s eye for good cows has been many years in the making. In 1992, “Take that leap of faith and believe in what you can accomplish when he won the Inter-County 4-H Dairy Judging Competition and traveled you go out on a limb.” to compete in Madison as part of the Ontario Dairy Judging Team. According to East-Central Holstein Rep, Adrian Vander Wielen, Dan is quite possibly the only Canadian to have scored high enough to win that competition. Though the results of international competitors are not officially recognized, records show he finished first amongst 152 participants. Today, he sits on Holstein Canada’s Classification Advisory Board and meets annually with his counterparts from across the country to oversee the future needs and direction of conformation improvement in Canada. Sire selection is done using a 70:30 ratio of proven to genomic bulls, and currently, Impression, Kingpin, and a lot of Doorman bloodlines are being used. In the past, Windbrook, Seaver and Dempsey have done well at the farm, yielding the stylish animals Dan desires. The family enjoys showing their animals locally and has competed - and done well - in their club’s Breeders’ Cup for several years running. Many of their best cows date back to a cow Ron bred: Almet Skychief Kim. Her great granddaughter, Metdale Denison Kyla, was Grand at Durham County show in 2014 and 2017. For the past three of five years, the family has had Grand at the show.

1

In 2014, they sold Honeyfield Sanchez Madison, a cow that Dan and Nancy had bred, to Budjon Farms and Peter and Lyn Vail of Madison, WI. She was second in her class at the Royal that year and later went on to capture the title of Reserve All-Canadian Jr 3-Yr-Old. Another cow family they’re focusing on at Maifield traces back to Aitkenbrae Starbuck Ada, a cow originally from Dan’s family’s farm. When the family hosted Durham’s Twilight Meeting in 2015, Brenda shared the farm’s rich history, which goes back to the McLaughlin family who invented the whiffletree (leader bar) in 1867 and later went on to lay the groundwork for the start of General Motors in Oshawa. George McLaughlin, who was the first chair of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board, also has roots here. Ron and Brenda also thanked everyone who played a part in the farm’s success over the years. At the top of that list were their kids. While not all of them are involved in the farm, they have all helped in one way or another while growing up and Ron and Brenda are proud of their many achievements, both on and off the farm. Their daughter, Sara, lives with her husband, Terry and their three children on a farm in Enniskillen. Son, Mike, lives in Hastings now where he is in the restaurant business and serves as a Municipal Councillor. Another daughter, Kim, is an auto mechanic and she and her husband, Peter, and their two children live in Ron and Brenda’s old home in Bowmanville.

Today, life at the new farm in Tyrone is good. The family - and the cows - are settled in and comfortable. There’s room for expansion, and with several eager farm kids running around, the future looks bright. But, it took time to get to this spot, and the road here wasn’t free from stress or worry. “Financially, it was a huge move,” says Dan. “We were significantly increasing our land base and tripling the dairy in one step.” To some, that might sound terrifying, but having lived to tell the tale of their experiences over the past five years, Brenda has some encouraging words to share with others considering a major change www.ontario.holstein.ca

Holstein Canada’s New Herd Enrollment Program Rantine Holsteins, NEWTON, ON

FAMILY IS AT THE VERY HEART OF EVERYTHING RANDY AND KRISTINE SCOTT DO AT RANTINE HOLSTEINS IN NEWTON, ONTARIO. WHETHER IT’S CONGREGATING TOGETHER IN THE BARN AT MILKING TIME, OR AN AFTERNOON TRACTOR RIDE WITH GRANDPA, THE INCLUSION OF ALL GENERATIONS IS KEY FOR THIS COUPLE AND THEIR CHILDREN, MADISON (7) AND SHANE (1). “I love working with Randy and I wouldn’t trade the opportunity to spend more time with our kids,” beams Kristine. The added bonus of being a valued asset for book keeping has allowed her to use her skills for data entry and enhance their farm. Rantine Holsteins is a 40-cow tie-stall operation nestled on a 100-acre property. The Scott Family from l to r: Randy, Shane, Madison and Kristine. PHOTO SUBMITTED. After a barn fire in 1998, Earl built the Such simple joys as walking to the barn and existing tie-stall with open box stalls on one working together each day are never taken for side. Since the couple took over in January granted for this couple, who once lived 20 min of 2018, they have installed a new TMR away in nearby Cranbrook. Prior to returning to system and instantly saw an increase in the farm full-time, Randy spent 12 years as an yields and components. The consistency of automotive paint technician while helping out these increases is what impresses the couple on the farm after work. Randy’s father, Earl, the most. They are looking at increasing the farmed his entire life at this location and was comfort of their bedding, possibly by adding joined by his wife, Brenda, once they married 40 mats, and installing an updated ventilation years ago. Without hesitation, both Randy and system in the near future. At some point, the Kristine offer credit to Randy’s parents for their herd may grow to a size that warrants the generous and unending support and to Randy’s construction of a new barn, but for now, this uncle Don for his assistance on farm. As a “city girl”, Kristine brings an entirely new dimension to farm life! Working in the health care profession - first in a long-term heath care facility and then at the Listowel Hospital as a scheduler - her expertise and outside perspective serve her well as the farm’s record and bookkeeping expert. The timing is perfect as the Ag industry is transitioning to more documentation; something that is critical in the health care sector. Although she misses her former employment, there are no regrets for this farm wife.

incorporating their genetic selections into the herd. They enjoy using the background info on their cows to mate the next generation. “It is important to benchmark the herd in order make improvements,” says Kristine, in reference to the DHI reports they currently use to see what’s working. Recently Dairy Comp was installed to assist with data entry and collection and Kristine credits this userfriendly program with making her job easier. EastGen offers their genetic mating reports to assist with breeding decisions, but Randy

is looking forward to classifying their herd to learn more about what to look for in functional type cows. “We only have 40 stalls in the barn, so I want to fill them with the best cows I can,” he states. The herd has not been classified in a number of years so the couple is excited to implement this new tool to maximize their genetic potential and achieve their goal of high production and longevity with functional traits. In the future, the Scotts would like to build together as a family and expand their operation if and when opportunities present themselves. Their goal is to be as efficient as possible and hope for a future for their children in the industry if they so choose. “We are living the dream right now, working as a family,” says Randy. At the end of the day, what more could anyone ask for!

EXPERIENCE THE BENEFITS OF ANIMAL REGISTRATION AND CLASSIFICATION! • Available to all herds who have not classified in two or more years. • Herd consultation visit with an experienced classifier. Discuss the benefits of classification and how the information can be used on farm. • No charge herd visit fee (regular or mid round) for first classification. • For qualifying herds with no registration activity for 3 or more years the program will also offer:

– Registration fee discounted by 50% for all animals (excluding base) registered within 6 months of commitment to the program. – No charge to transfer ownership of animals resident in the herd prior. – To qualify for the registration savings herds must agree to participate in at least one classification visit. • Ontario Holstein Field staff are available to help you with the registration process.

On the morning of Monday, October 1st, 2018, four enthusiastic young dairy farmers awoke early to prepare for their upcoming roadtrip adventure to World Dairy Expo! The instant that the fab four’s cell phones were flipped onto Facebook and Twitter that morning, every person’s news feed was flooded with comments about the signing of the new USMCA agreement and the impact on the Canadian dairy industry. While touring through the USA, we asked each farmer about their understanding of the trade deal and the impact on the dairy sector in the USA. From our discussions, none of these farmers really felt that USMCA would make a difference on their market as they all recognized that they have a significant oversupply problem themselves. To put the numbers in perspective, there are 1.3 million cows in the state of Wisconsin alone, whereas the Canadian dairy industry is less than 1 million cows for the entire country. www.ontario.holstein.ca

Our fearless leader for the trip was Angela Howard, who has been the Western Ontario Holstein Rep for the past 25 years. Though a veteran with the Branch, Angela forewarned us that she hadn’t done this trip in over 12 years, so we were the guinea pigs for her 2018 Dairy Youth Trip adventure in the classy 2018 GMC Tahoe. We sincerely appreciated Angela’s pre-trip shopping spree at Costco for delicious snacks, which provided us fuel to keep going, as we were so jam-packed with farm stops on day three that we even missed lunch! To make up for skipping lunch that day, we dined in style at the PineHurst Farms Golf Course restaurant, which was the former site of the illustrious PineHurst Farms.

TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic 2018 HIGHLIGHTS » Another exciting TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic is in the books after months of hard work and training on the part of the 351 keen 4-H’ers. Competitors congregated from near and far to take part in the three-day event, with counties from Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia represented. Teams arrived very early on Sunday November 4 to set up their displays and settle in their calves. Over the course of the event, 4-H members competed individually in both showmanship and conformation competitions, and vied as teams for Best Exhibit, Best Group of Three Calves and Premier County. The Ring of Excellence was once again the show’s venue and exhibitors and spectators alike enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere, set in the middle of the Royal Winter Agricultural Fair and all its glory. Claire Swale of the U.K. did an exceptional job in the ring, taking her time to allow 4-H members to display their showmanship skills. Steve Fraser of Fergus, ON was her capable Associate Judge. Over the course of the highcaliber competition, Claire selected top showman from each of the respective junior, intermediate and senior heats and chose champions from each group. On Tuesday, November 6, Conformation Judge Bloyce Thompson, who made the trip all the way from P.E.I., placed the many heats and classes of top 4-H Holsteins, Jerseys, Ayrshires and other coloured breeds from across the country. Results from both days can be found (at right). Congratulations to everyone who took part! The Classic would not be possible without the commitment to youth from our major sponsors, TD Bank, Semex and Holstein Canada in the form of generous donations. Thank you also to the many supporting sponsors for their contributions. The organizing committee and all of the 4-H members attending are truly grateful for their support. Many 4-H members would not be able to make it the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic without the support of many local sponsors at home, parents, leaders and other volunteers. They deserve a huge thank you as well. We look forward to welcoming everyone to the 40th TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic next year!

Brandon Scheepers: Aiming for the Top

BY COLE VERBURG

A DOWN-TO-EARTH FARM KID FROM WINCHESTER ONTARIO, 19-YEAR-OLD BRANDON SCHEEPERS IS LOOKING FORWARD TO A BRIGHT FUTURE. CURRENTLY IN HIS SECOND YEAR OF A THREE-YEAR PROGRAM AT THE MACDONALD CAMPUS OF MCGILL UNIVESRSITY IN SAINTE-ANNE-DE-BELLEVUE, BRANDON IS STUDYING FARM MANAGEMENT AND TECHNOLOGY. HE PLANS TO RETURN HOME TO HIS FAMILY’S WINWOOD HOLSTEINS WHEN HIS STUDIES ARE COMPLETE.

W

Brandon was one of two recipients of the 2018 Paul Adam Memorial Award from McGill. Presenting the award is Farm Management and Technologies program director Peter Enright (l) and MacDonald Campus farm Manager Paul Meldrum. PHOTO SUBMITTED.

With the word “sold” ringing in his ears, Brandon Scheepers smiles at the new addition to his herd. Nasholm DB Tease Me-ET* is a Diamond Back September calf from a VG-89 2-Year-Old Absolute Cow. The latest in a recent string of purchases, Tease Me was purchased at the New York Summer Picnic Sale and serves as a promising extension to Bravin Holsteins - a blossoming young herd that Brandon is passionate about developing into a household name.

Brandon has certainly caught the bug for buying good cattle and enjoys attending auctions both near and far. In addition to Tease Me, he also purchased another Diamond Back calf (Rocklan Lightning Struck) from the Rocklan Dispersal in New York State last spring and is part owner on two animals with Crovalley. However, the buyer’s chair is not the only seat that Brandon occupies at auctions. In June, Brandon spent ten days in Iowa to earn his auctioneer license fom the World Wide College of Auctioneering and now works part-time at Rideau Auctions. He plans to start a side business as an auctioneer once he’s home on the farm and hopes to get into herd dispersals and other auctioning gigs.

Nine years in 4-H has given Brandon a wealth of knowledge about fitting, showing, and the Holstein breed, and through that he developed his passion for dairy cattle, specifically conformation. Brandon loves showing and has taken a small string to the Eastern Ontario Invitational every year. He has also exhibited at shows of all Whether it’s buying cows, levels, including the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal. selling cows, showing cows “I’m more of a cow guy,” says Brandon of his involvement with the or breeding cows, not a day breeding program on his family’s farm. For many years now, he has goes by without Brandon been helping his mom make mating choices and plans to one day learn immersing himself in what he to breed cows himself. Despite his focus on conformation, Brandon loves, and what he does best. is always breeding for a well-balanced cow, a cow with high type that His passion for Holsteins and can also pull her weight in the milking line. To achieve this, he is using ambition to breed top-quality bulls such as Doorman, Brewmaster, Epic, Unstoppabull and Control cows will be the driving force and hopes to one day earn the farm their first Master Breeder shield. behind his dream one day Brandon will not be caught settling for less than the best. “Don’t aim coming true. to be just average, aim for the top.” To this end, Brandon was recently awarded one of two Paul Adam Memorial Awards from McGill. The award, established in memory of Paul Adam by his friends and family, recognizes individuals who will be pursuing careers in production agriculture and is awarded on the basis of interest in dairy production and soil stewardship.

Industry Insider

BY DEREK KLUMPENHOUWER

Darrell Weber: Serving The Dairy Farmer Norwell Dairy Systems DRAYTON, ON

DARRELL WEBER IS A DAIRY SERVICE TECHNICIAN WITH NORWELL DAIRY SYSTEMS WHERE HE WORKS OUT OF THE DRAYTON LOCATION. HE HAS BEEN IN THE DAIRY SERVICE INDUSTRY WITH NORWELL SINCE FEBRUARY 2000. DARRELL IS ONE OF THE MOST RESPECTED AND PROMINENT MEMBERS OF THE DAIRY SERVICE INDUSTRY. HE WAS BORN AND RAISED AT FLORAVIEW FARMS IN ELMIRA. OUR SUMMER STUDENT, DEREK KLUMPENHOUWER, SAT DOWN WITH DARRELL AT THE DRAYTON OFFICE RECENTLY. Derek (DK): How long have you been in the dairy industry? Darrell (DW): I was born and raised on a dairy farm and then I drove feed truck. I have had numerous jobs, but it was always dairy-related in one way or another. So basically I have been in it my whole life. DK: Why did you choose to work within the dairy industry and what makes it enjoyable? DW: I was born into it! It is where I am comfortable. I find it an enjoyable industry with lots of variety and variety is the spice of life! I enjoy fixing things and helping people. Helping dairy farmers for me is just the best place to be. You get to fix their problems, help them out and keep them going. DK: What does a typical day look like for a dairy service technician? DW: Unpredictable! You never know where you are going to be, what you are going to be doing, how long you are going to be there or what the weather is going to do. There are just so many variables.

Darrell Weber poses in front of his Norwell service van. He has been with the company for 18 years. PHOTO BY DEREK KLUMPENHOUWER

DK: What is the worst service call you have ever been to? DW: The worst service call has to be the morning that a Huron County I enjoy fixing things and helping dairy farmer went out to milk his cows and found a car had crashed into his utility room. It had smashed both cooling units, two air compressors, people. Helping dairy farmers for two vacuum pumps and knocked the utility room half off the me is just the best place to be. foundation. I got the page at about 4:00 a.m. and phoned another technician to assist me. The utility room was chaos when we arrived. 9-5 job; it’s the service industry (that’s not just here, that’s anywhere in We worked fast, and by 10:00 a.m., we had him up and running fully the service industry). It is an on-call basis. You have to be willing to do again. However, the cows got milked and that’s all that was important! anything, anytime, anywhere. And you are dealing with people usually at their worst times, so you have to be a good listener, too. DK: What is one thing that people might not know about the life of a dairy service technician? DW: The unpredictability of it. You’re basically on call 24/7. That’s why it has to be something that you enjoy. It’s certainly not for everybody. It’s one of those things that you just never know what’s going to happen and sometimes it can be tough to handle, but you need to have a pretty open attitude. You need to be able to adapt to pretty much anything. In the service industry in general, plans can change in a heartbeat because there can always be a bigger priority somewhere else. You can be loaded up and just about ready to go and then you have to unload because you are headed in a totally different direction. Your mind always has to be going at 90 miles an hour to keep up. DK: What would be your advice to someone who wanted to be a dairy service technician. Where should they start? DW: I don’t think there is a definite starting point. They must be “handy”. They have to be able to pick up and do just about anything. If you’re not mechanically inclined, it’s not going to work well. For young people getting into it, it’s something that you have to have a drive and passion for because it’s also going to be your way of life. It’s not a typical www.ontario.holstein.ca

DK: You’ve been in the dairy industry a long time, what is the biggest change you have seen throughout your time? DW: All the automation. The computerization and digitalization of so many things. For me, that’s been the biggest change that has affected me. I know in the cow end of things, the biggest changes I’ve seen have been in genetics and cow and feed management. There has just been so much change in everything. The size of the farms has changed a bit, too, but we still have our big farms and many small farms. For example, the farm where I grew up and where my brother now farms is still milking 44 cows and there are still lots of guys milking around 30 cows. DK: What keeps getting you out of bed in the morning? DW: Just the drive I have to look after my farmers. I have been looking after them and working with them for forty years. This passion started while driving feed truck and continued through my 14 years of building silos and working on silo unloaders and feed equipment. Most of my adult life has been spent servicing farms and the farmer. Mind you, before it wasn’t only dairy farmers, it was all farmers; but at Norwell I have had the opportunity to work with dairy farmers specifically. It has kept it interesting and given it lots of variety. the

Peter Christie Farm: Chrisland Holsteins Herd Size: 50 milking Operation Type: tie-stall Location: Caledon, Ontario The Christie family, from l to r: Katie, Peter Jr., Marsha and Peter. PHOTO SUBMITTED.

1. What is your family’s history with Holsteins? My father, Keith Christie, started with a Jersey herd in Streetsville in the late 1940s and later began milking Holsteins in the early 1950s under the Christeen prefix. When I came home to farm in the 1970s, I started my own prefix with Holstein Canada - Chrisland. We moved from Streetsville to Caledon in the early 1980s and have been milking Holsteins here ever since. The Christeen herd earned a Master Breeder in 1984. Up until 10 years ago, we still had some Christeen in the herd, but these days, all of our cows carry the Chrisland prefix.

and they last a really long time. We’ve been milking so many of them for so long. They’ve been good cows for us.

10. How do you use genomic information in your herd and what are your thoughts on the future of genomics? Genomics is a tool, similar to DHI. We use a moderate amount of genomic semen in our herd. Genomics has rapidly increased the rate of genetic gain and progress in the breed. However, on the flip side, genomics also makes it more challenging for a breeder to put a bull into stud. With AI companies able to purchase high-genomic heifers, and in turn, reap the rewards of their sons, we believe the need will be smaller 2. What are your breeding goals? We aim to breed balanced, high-type cows with longevity, high butter for AI companies to come on farm in search of up-and-coming sires. fat and low Somatic Cell Counts. We also strive to breed cows that can 11. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do do well in the show ring, as well. you value most? Well-grown, balanced 2-year-olds, with good udders and feet and legs, 3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program? We use classification, DHI and cdn.ca. We also use sexed semen as a who have the ability to produce a lot of milk, sired by well-known, popular bulls, will create the most demand. The trait we value most breeding tool for our better cows and virgin heifers. here is udders, but at the end of the day, balance is important too. They 4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation. need to have the complete package. The ultimate cow in our operation calves at 24 months and scores Very Good as a 2-year-old. She also tests high for butterfat. That same cow 12. Which bulls do you feel have had the most impact on your herd? continues to calve out regularly, scores Excellent in her third lactation Citation R, Prestar, Starbuck, Goldwyn, Windbrook and Doorman and remains in the herd for 10 or more years. Ideally, she is also trouble- have had a great impact on our herd in years past. Currently, we’ve been having good luck with Doorman and Sidekick. free throughout her lifetime and can hold her own in the show ring. 13. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Why? An array of preventative practices have helped us do well. Whether it’s been preventative maintenance on the tractor and baler, or preventative medicine such as boluses, vaccines, dry cow treatment, and foot baths, prevention has been key to helping our operation run smoothly and keeping our herd healthy. Regular hoof trimming is also 6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? very important and we owe great deal of thanks to our hoof trimmer, Today, we are most proud to have our son, Peter Jr. and his wife, Katie, Kiyoshi Kamei, for his expertise - he’s the best! Team work is also key; working with us on the farm and transitioning to take over the farm here at the farm, everyone has a role, but we all work together. I do the in the future. feeding, my son does the milking and my wife feeds calves and does the books. Daily communication makes it all work. 7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be? We’d like to make the farm more labour-efficient and be able to steadily increase our size and production. 5. What cow in your barn is currently the “Heart of the Herd”? Eight-year-old Chrisland Goldwyn Beauty is the heart of our herd. Today, Beauty is definitely the most outstanding cow in our barn at EX-93-4E. She’s made over 60,000 kg lifetime with 4.8 per cent fat, and has two daughters in the herd - a VG-86 3-year-old Windbrook, as well as a Doorman calf that looks promising.

8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why? For us it would be Quality BC Frantisco. She’s a tremendous cow, who still to this day, has a major influence on the herd at Quality Holsteins. 9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer that you wish you had been told? You can’t have too many daughters that work well in your herd. For us, that would have been Goldwyn daughters. They have amazing udders
