editor’s note
I
Start with why I recently saw a video with Simon Sinek, a popular public speaker in the US. He talks about your “why”. Most of you reading this will be Holstein breeders and dairy producers. Why do you do what you do? And why do you get out of bed in the morning? These are questions that you must ask yourself. It is more than to make a living! Do you get up in the morning to produce a product to feed the world? Do you aim to breed the best cows that will have great conformation and produce high volumes of milk? We celebrate and congratulate a new crop of Master Breeders here in Ontario and Canada. Why have they achieved this honour? For some of them it is a life-long dream to win the shield and have done so with a goal of breeding high type and production cows. For others becoming a Master Breeder is the result of top management in their Holstein herd. Whatever it is, for the new and old Master Breeders they have achieved the greatest honour that can be bestowed on them by Holstein Canada. Congratulations to you all! Lastly, all good things must come to an end. This year editing The Link has been an unbelievably amazing experience. Thank you to all the Ontario Holstein breeders for their support and to Jason and Andrea for the opportunity. I look forward to continuing to see you at Holstein events in the future. Thanks again, Julie McIntosh, Interim Link Editor thelink@ontario.holstein.ca

Holstein Breeders For members of Holstein Canada that register their young Holstein calves into the national herd book, they are known as breeders of Holstein cattle. This should not give them any stereotype on what style of Holsteins that they are trying to breed. Because you are a breeder, does not mean that you are trying to breed the next Royal Winter Fair champion. If you are a breeder of Holsteins, you have chosen this breed because you feel that this type of cow will suit your dairy operation. But what every dairy operator needs to develop is a breeding strategy for their herd to find their ideal cow. For some operators it is developing a high type cow that can grace the show ring but for others, they prefer cows that have traits that give cows longevity and superior health traits. We see cows that are red and white, polled, high genomic values, high production, or high protein and fat. Is one strategy better than another? The answer is no because every operator has different opinions and a vision on what kind of cow they want to work with, which therefore gives us a variety of Holstein Breeders. The next time that someone comments that they are a Holstein Breeder then ask them, what kind of breeder are you? We may be able to learn from each other and bring other peoples’ opinions into your own breeding strategy. Sincerely,
Jason French, General Manager branch@ontario.holstein.ca

County Club Spotlight
A
Featuring
Wellington Holstein Club
By MARY FRASER
A STRONG AND UNITED HOLSTEIN CLUB IS A SOURCE OF PRIDE AND TRADITION FOR MANY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS. At the Ontario Holstein Branch, we work closely with County Holstein Clubs from across the province and get to witness first-hand the dedication and enthusiasm of club executives and members alike. We are pleased to showcase the history and achievements of county clubs across Ontario. 1. What is the club’s background and history? The inaugural meeting to organize a Wellington County Holstein Club took place on May 30, 1938. The meeting was called by S.B. Stothers, the Agricultural Representative for Wellington County. Byron G. Jenvey of Ingersoll was present to outline the organization of county clubs. J. H. Fox and F. Townsend moved that a club be organized in Wellington County with an annual fee of $1. There would be 12 directors, one from each township in Wellington and that the executive would include a president, four vice presidents and the secretary-treasurer. Byron Jenvey, Fieldman for the Central Organization read the constitution that has been used by most of the clubs in the province. It was moved to adopt that constitution, but that it conform with the suggestions regarding directors and the annual meeting where the directors and executive were to be elected. The first executive and directors were as follows: • President – Mr. J.D. Gale of Guelph (Guelph) • 1st V.P. – Frank Townsend of Belwood (West Garafraxa) • 2nd V.P. – Wm. N. Lawless of Moorefield (Maryborough) • 3rd V.P. – S.C. Whale of Alma (Peel) • 4th V.P. – Earle Moore of Orton (Erin) Directors: • Minto – Archie McEarchern (Palmerston) • Arthur – George Francis (Mount Forest) • West Luther – Erral Dickson (Arthur) • Puslinch – Wm. Winer (Guelph) • Nichol – Wm. Fair (Guelph) • Pilkington – Noah E. Miller (Elora) • Eramosa – Sims McLean (Rockwood) The club held what they called “Field Days” with the Yorkshire Club (Swine). They judged two classes of dairy and two classes of swine, one class being a carcass class. They also had sports and speakers for the day. Prizes were $3., $2. and $1. for each of the swine classes. In the Holstein classes the prizes were to be divided between Junior and Senior and the top overall would receive a true-type Holstein model. They had a calf club in 1939 and the club display was the same day as the county Holstein show. The show was at the Fergus Fall Fair that year. 1942 was the year they started calling the show the “Black and White Day”. In 1943 the Wellington Holstein Club decided to organize a club for the purpose of securing a bull or bulls for the artificial insemination of cows. 2. What has the club accomplished in recent years? We amalgamated the County Holstein Show with Dufferin County to make one larger show. The Breeders’ Cup competition was started and the twilight meeting was changed to an evening with a meal, judging and slide show of the entries in the Breeders’ Cup.
8
the
Link SPRING 2014
3. What annual activities does your club organize? How do you promote club activities? Our club is a busy club throughout the year. Annually the club organizes in-county barn tours, the twilight meeting, Breeders’ Cup competition, a clip and show day for 4-H dairy members and help with the joint Dufferin-Wellington Holstein Show. Club activities are promoted through a newsletter sent out by the club secretary. 4. What advice would you give to other clubs wanting to grow their membership and become more active? We would suggest holding activities where the majority of the membership lives. Also, changing how activities are run occasionally helps to attract participants. 5. Where do you see the club in a few years down the road? We see possibly a larger participation in the Breeders’ Cup and not so many cows going to shows. Also, more communication happening through emails or social media will hopefully keep the interest of younger members. 6. How do you support youth in your club? The Wellington Holstein Club gives all first year 4-H dairy members with a Holstein calf a new halter. We also give a donation to the 4-H Junior Show held at the Elora Raceway and have been doing the cleanup after the show. As well, the club will pay the registration fee if needed for 4-H members attending the Inter-County 4-H Judging Competition and support the Wellington TD Dairy Classic team going to the Royal. 7. How do you communicate with your members? We mainly communicate through newsletters and now email. www.ontario.holstein.ca

The Master Breeder shield is the most coveted award presented by Holstein Canada. Only 944 Master Breeder shields have been awarded in the award’s 84-year existence. These “Master” breeders are recognized for having mastered the art of breeding balanced cattle – high production and outstanding conformation with great reproduction, health and longevity. This year 20 breeders from across Canada were designated with the Master Breeder honour, with nine of them coming from Ontario. Congratulations to this year’s honourees!

Huron County Holstein Club
O
On July 5, 2014 the Huron County Holstein Club will come together and celebrate 75 years of Holstein breeding at Heather Holme Holsteins in Goderich. The rich history of the Huron Holstein Club started in 1939. The Sept. 26, 1964 Farmers’ Advocate newspaper reports that the formation of the Huron Club was reversed in comparison to other Holstein clubs in Ontario. Most Holstein clubs had formed and assisted with the organization of calf clubs, but the case wasn’t so for Huron. The Huron Calf Club was formed in early 1939 under the auspices of the Goderich Agricultural Society. The Holstein Club was organized later that same year to provide support to the Calf Club.

A postcard by famous Goderich photographer, Reuben R Sallows of Bill Bisset squirting milk at village friend Harold Maedel.
On July 30th, 1939, the club was organized in the office of then Agricultural Representative J.C. Shearer, with Brian G. Jenvey, Western Ontario Holstein Fieldman from Ingersoll in attendance. Gordon Bisset of Goderich was elected president with Colin Campbell of Bayfield as first vice president and Willis Van Egmond of Clinton as second. Hume Clutton of Goderich was named secretarytreasurer. The directors included Leonard Leeming, Fred Cox, Wm. Treble, Earnest Johnston, Wm. Sparks, and R. Serag; the ten Charter Members. Over the years, the club has been concerned with providing guidance and suitable calves for calf club members but in giving its members, particularly new breeders of Holstein cattle a sound knowledge of the practical aspects of breeding and developing superior animals. The first Black and White Day, sponsored by the club was held in connection with the Goderich Fair, September 8, 1939 with 26 entries. These were judged by Inman Thompson of St. Pauls. To long-time Huron member Glen McNeil’s knowledge, the Black and White Show was in Goderich for a number of years and then moved around to Blyth, followed by Seaforth and finally Clinton. The show lasted until the late 1990s. Due to a lack of participation it was cancelled and Huron breeders are now invited to attend the Middlesex and Bruce-Grey shows. Huron County has made itself known, having not only been recognized with many Excellent and Star Brood Cows, but also on the national and international stage. Some of the successes include having bred such animals as:
The sons of Sam Bisset. From left, Bob (the ice cream man), Bill (the butter man), Pete (the crop man), Jim (machinery man) and Gord (the cow man and Huron’s first president).

Celebrating 75 years Glen noted that the first president of the club, Gord Bisset and his family were the principal owners of Saltford Heights Holsteins and Bisset Brothers Ltd. which produced butter and more famously ice cream. Glen remembers one summer in the 1960s taking milk to the Bisset creamery. “While at the creamery, we would walk Saltford Heights Holsteins barn photo taken in 1981. Since through the production then the barn has fallen to pieces and the two silos have line. Gord Bisset was there now been integrated into a new home by a local contactor. and he reached back with a Dixie Cup filled with ice cream for me. It was an amazing product.”
Hume Clutton, the club’s first secretary-treasurer was presented with the 34th Master Breeder shield from Holstein Canada in 1949. Many other herds would go on to win the prestigious shield including Heather Holme Holsteins who have won it three times. The Farmers’ Advocate article from September 1964 also notes that Hume Clutton “considers that the herd evaluation program recently sponsored by the club, with the assistance of Fieldman Gordon Bell, is one of the most educational projects yet offered to their members… Holstein cows classified ‘Excellent’ in Huron included two bred in the herd of Thomas and George Hayden of Gorrie. One of these became a six Star Brood Cow and the other sold for $6,000 last year.”
Another strong herd in the 1960s mentioned above, was that of George and Thomas Hayden under the Benella prefix. George was an astute breeder and used all of the great bulls of the day. He had daughters of Romandale Reflection Marquis and crossed them with Rosafe Citation R. The Huron County Holstein Club is proud to have members that have represented them beyond the county. Two individuals have served on both the provincial and national levels. Ross Marshall was nominated and elected to the Holstein Canada Board of Directors, and ultimately became President of Holstein Canada in 1974. Glen McNeil was nominated and elected to the Ontario Holstein Branch Board of Directors, becoming President in 1998. Furthering his commitment to promoting and preserving the integrity of Holstein Canada, Glen was nominated and elected to the Holstein Canada Board of Directors, and as well, became President of Holstein Canada in 2012. Huron has had a high number of winners of the Ontario Dairy Youth Award (ODYA). They include Glen McNeil in 1981, Wayne Bos in 1995, Larry Baer in 1999, Dwayne Feddes in 2001, Paul Winkel in 2003 and Steve Hern in 2007. All of these ODYA Winners went on to Continued on page 28.

2014 District Farm Tours It’s tour time! Although the weather this winter has been a challenge for visitors to make it out on the district tours, many braved the elements to visit over 40 farms. The Branch would like to extend their appreciation to the host farms for their overwhelming hospitality. A lot of hard work goes into hosting and the success of these tours would not have been possible without you! The Western Ontario tour (hosted by Elgin) was held in conjunction with the Ontario Holstein Branch’s Annual Meeting in February, while the West-Central tours (hosted by Haldimand-Norfolk), East-Central tours (hosted by Peterborough) and Eastern Ontario tours (hosted by Dundas) were held in March.

Red and white ambitions for the future.
BY CELESTE COOK
Dedicated and confident, nineteen-year-old Dennis Hoogerbrugge of Middlesex County is aiming to be quite successful in the dairy industry.
D
Dennis’s realization that farming is becoming operated more like a business led him to enroll in the Agricultural Business program at the University of Guelph. As a second year student at the Ontario Agricultural College, Dennis embraces true aggie spirit by being a member of the Dairy Science Club and the 2016 Sabres Men’s Hockey team. While completing his degree, Dennis has impressively taken on the responsibility of investing in a house where he lives with four fellow aggies. In addition, Dennis takes on leadership roles in the community by coaching his younger brother’s U15 Taxandria team in Arkona. He also enjoys playing soccer himself, as he plays on the 2nd Division Men’s Team in Taxandria that his father Adrian coaches. Dennis’s interest in the dairy industry developed on the family farm, High Bridge Farms near Parkhill, Ontario. Seeking new opportunities, Dennis’s family immigrated to Canada from Holland in 2000. Building from the ground up, the Hoogerbrugge family purchased quota to milk 45 cows and gradually increased to the present herd size of approximately 110 Holsteins in a free-stall barn. The barn was built in three sections to accommodate the increasing herd size. Currently, H-Bridge Holsteins has a running BCA of 229-234-230 and 80 per cent of the herd is classified Good Plus or better. H-Bridge is owned and operated by Dennis’s parents Adrian and Jolanda Hoogerbrugge and brothers Stefan and Frank. High Bridge Farms are truly a family operated farm as the entire family does their part on the farm in order for it to run smoothly. On the farm, Dennis is responsible for the general chores such as for milking, feeding and fieldwork.
the breed. At H-Bridge, almost all the breeding stock is bred to red and white bulls or red carrier bulls. This has allowed them to build up red and white genetics and take advantage of the increasingly popular polled genetics. They currently flush once or twice a month and breed all heifers with embryos to improve the genetics on their farm. The Heart of their Herd is six Star Brood red and white, H-Bridge Faber Jennifer-Red which traces back to A Cloverlands Skylar CherryRed. Jennifer was scored Very Good as a two-year-old, and today the majority of the herd is made up of her offspring. Jennifer has twelve milking daughters that are all classified Good Plus or better. Dennis has inherited the family’s love for the red and white breed and has taken an interest in showcasing their genetics at both local and national shows. Dennis’s latest 4-H heifer was a great granddaughter of Jennifer, H-Bridge Demello Jefferson-Red. Dennis was named Reserve Champion Showperson at the Ontario Red and White Show with Jefferson. He was privileged to represent Middlesex County twice, at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic. In 2012, Jefferson placed in the middle of the Senior Heifer class. In the future, Dennis plans to follow in his father’s footsteps by planning to become a dairy farmer. Dennis is currently registered in the new entrant program so that he can start farming shortly after graduating.
Dennis’ enthusiastic personality and interest in the dairy industry has not gone unnoticed. His impressive work habit, passion to improve While farming in Holland, the Hoogerbrugge’s dairy farm was the red and white Holstein breed and leadership at the University of entirely made up of red and white Holsteins. The farm had an old shed that they remodeled for calves and they decided to build a new free-stall barn with cow comfort being key. Two silos were also built.
The move to a new country was a trial for the whole family. Not knowing very much English was difficult for the German speaking family. They soon picked it up by going to English school in Stratford, the kids going to school, television and at the coffee shop in town.
After building the new barn, Hans made the decision to milk Holsteins because that was the main breed in Canada. He bought his first 35 cows and pregnant heifers at the former Tavistock Dairy Sales on October 23, 1991. Just speaking a little bit of English, he says he bid on animals but didn’t know if he got them or not and didn’t really know the prices, but when the ring men were looking at him he figured he had bought one. Those first cows ranged in price from $800 to $1,700. Hans remembers the first cow calved the night they brought her home from the sale. The calf barn wasn’t done so they made a pen out of straw bales. Every month, Hans bought cows and quota to build the A funny story the family tells about borrowing equipment is when herd to the 70-75 they are milking today.
With their interest rate at eleven per cent and money spent on a new barn, there was no money left over for equipment. Hans knew from his days as a farm manager that equipment didn’t make money, it just drops in value. They purchased a skid steer to clean the barn and a little used pickup truck and car. Custom harvesters were hired and they borrowed tractors and even crow bars from neighbours, especially another Swiss immigrant in the area named Rudy Rauser. Son Marco remembers it was a big day when he was 11 and the farm bought a cement drill.

The Ulmar herd was recently named a 2013 Master Breeder herd by Holstein Canada. Hans didn’t flush many cows over the years, but consistently bred his cows to good bulls and got good production. They don’t use a bull under 500 for milk and the type numbers have to be high. A cow with good conformation lasts a long time in his barn and is able to breed on. Since starting in 1991, many of the cows were grades or percentages when they were purchased and their descendants have been raised in percentage to purebred and helped to win the Master Breeder. Many different cows and families contributed to the award.
The current classification at Ulmar is 14 Excellent, 44 Very Good and 25 Good Plus. Marco and Hans have recently used a lot of Windbrook in the breeding program as well as Chelios, Shottle, Aftershock, and Fever. They have gone back and used some Allen on cows that needed more strength. Marco says they are using about 20 per cent genomic sires as well.

Thunder Bay Tour
The Northumberland Holstein Club along with Select Sires’ Ben Bilker organized a tour of the Thunder Bay area where they visited ten herds over two days. Ben Bilker had worked in Thunder Bay after immigrating from Holland and the Northumberland Club members are always keen to see and try new things, so the trip was a perfect opportunity to see Thunder Bay area dairy farms.

After an “Amazing Race” style of trip (the bus didn’t show up resulting in a mad dash in cars, parking and hopping a ferry at 7:30 a.m.) in to the Toronto Island Airport. The 27 travellers boarded the Porter aircraft at 8 a.m. on the Tuesday morning. The Holstein enthusiasts included people from Northumberland County, neighbouring county breeders as well as Ontario Holstein General Manager Jason French. After landing in sunny Thunder Bay and organizing the five vans and cars, the group caravanned out to visit the first herd. Peter, Rens and Henry Aalbers lost their barn to fire in 2012 and have rebuilt a new 100 cow free-stall barn with a double 12 parlour. The building of barns continued as the group visited Gert and Peg Brekveld that are building a new pack barn for their 70 head herd. Chrishar Holsteins greeted the group while owner Arie Grootenboer gave a history of the herd. The herd of Jed Blekkenhorst impressed the group with their herd of great udders and frame. Lorne and Cynthia Vis welcomed everyone to their Joalfarms Holsteins and introduced the three generations that are involved in their high type herd. That evening, Select Sires Canada hosted the group for dinner at a local hall where the group was able to sit with dairy producers from the area and learn more about how they manage their farms. Jason French led a discussion on the Canadian Holstein Breed Strategy to allow the Thunder Bay members to give their opinions on how they see the breed progressing into the future.
www.ontario.holstein.ca
The next morning was a clear and cold day as they headed to see the Terry Fox Memorial that is situated on a hill that overlooks Lake Superior and the City of Thunder Bay. They were greeted at the first farm by the Bolt family as they showed off their double Lely robot barn and how they manage their herd. Joel Veurink’s herd was the next stop and their tie-stall barn showed off their great uddered cows. The Thunder Oak Cheese Farm is operated by the Schep family and is a popular destination for area residents. This family operation uses milk from their Holstein and Jersey herd and is excited about their new store that will include larger space for cheese making, sales and lunch counter. Trustmore Holsteins is the home of new genetics to the area and the Streutker family has shown successfully at their local shows. Ed and Aaron Breukelman’s free-stall herd has the Nor’Wester Mountains in the background and had a group of heifers that sparked a lot of interest. The final stop was at the herd of Richard and Sherry Tempelman where they milk in a free-stall barn and provided their house for people to change out of their “barn” smelling clothes prior to getting on the airplane! The Thunder Bay Holstein members appreciated the effort that the Northumberland Holstein members and friends made to travel to see their herds and welcome any other club to visit them at any time.

The Elgin County Holstein Club was host to the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Ontario Holstein Branch held February 25th to 27th and they started the festivities with the popular farm tours. A rare, sunny, no snow day greeted visitors to the open houses of Hartveld, Futurecrest, Mistyglen, Liddlerock, Maplekeys, Narwood, Springerhill, Monoak, Forest Lee, Silverridge and Skipwell. Thank you to these members for allowing visitors to see your facilities and great herds. The Best Western Stoneridge Inn near London was the hotel location for that evening’s events featuring a wine and cheese reception, sponsored by EastGen, the Master Breeder presentation and fun auction. Hank Hazeleger and Dave Jenkins read biographies on the nine Master Breeders that hailed from Ontario while President El Petherick presented a certificate and etched blue milk jug to each family. Congratulations to all the Master Breeders on their achievement and we look forward to continue celebrating their accomplishment in Quebec at the National Holstein Convention. With Jimmy Doan and John G. Walker serving as auctioneers, the fun auction had 36 items that ranged from children’s John Deere bicycles to antique sale catalogues. Serving on this committee were Sandy Walters and Nancy-Lee Hazeleger, with the proceeds of the auction benefiting the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund.
The 2014 Ontario Holstein Board of Directors.

The organization had an exceptional year in 2013 with registrations. The Holstein Canada classification department is fully staffed therefore scored a high level of cows. The Holstein Canada Board Of Directors have made a large commitment to visit members and take their ideas to making the organization stronger. Dan Dykxhoorn, Cameron Graham and Kevin Klages were given a plaque to remember their award and their time in Madison, WI. Amber Kilgour was unable to attend. To finish the annual meeting, Gary Cain thanked President El Petherick for his tenure on the board and he was joined by his wife Joy in a presentation of a thank you gift. A special thank you to the organizing committee of the annual general meeting, consisting of Sandy Walters, Hank and Nancy-Lee Hazeleger, Dave and Maureen Jenkins, Angela Howard and Ken Zimmer for all of their hard work and talent on organizing a successful event. The final day of the annual meeting schedule was the Dairy Management Workshop, however an unscheduled blizzard closed roads and a small crowed was on hand. The Ontario Holstein Branch worked with the Progressive Dairy Operators on the agenda and the workshop was supported by sponsors Genex Canada and Holstein Canada.

Marking its 4th year, the Outstanding Dairy Women Service Award is annually presented to recognize the contributions of women in the dairy business. Congratulations to this year’s winner, Sandy O’Hara of Dandyland Holsteins near Schomberg. A speech that was delivered recently at the Ontario Branch’s annual general meeting by the award’s chairperson, Tara Bullock can be found below:
Service by definition is the ACT of HELPFUL ACTIVITY. For many in this room the act of serving others is inherently part of their person, it’s what makes them who they are, it’s what drives and inspires them every day whether looking after their family, their farm or their community. The Outstanding Dairy Women Service Award was first developed with the intention of recognizing the women in this business for these efforts to develop and maintain organizations which would support this rural way of life. The service these women provide to their communities comes from a basic need to “get things done”.
5. Work your butt off, make your efforts count for something. Our winner this year has an extensive resume filled with so many accomplishments. Over the years she has helped to build and develop their very successful family farm. She has helped to raise two very accomplished amazing children and to see them succeed in this industry as adults. She has been dedicated to the local 4-H program, her church, community committees, local charities, and her local Holstein club. She has helped to have other pioneers in this business recognized for their lifelong efforts and she is an ambassador for the dairy business both locally and regionally.

A new excellent cow or a very good two-year-old is a breeding accomplishment. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. From December 2013 through to the end of February 2014, there were 428 1st time Excellent cows and 210 Very Good two-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. Holstein Canada’s 2014 Enrollment Program Randale Holsteins, Picton, ON
By Adrian Vander Wielen
For many years Paul and Patti Guernsey of Picton, Ontario have been raising their family and improving and growing their farm business. Son Randy, a recent high school graduate had an interest in farming and at the insistence of his parents, was encouraged to work off the farm before making any long term farming commitments. In 2006, following a five year career in the tree removal business, Randy indicated a strong desire to return home to officially be a part of the farm.

Paul and Patti Guernsey, grandson Payden and son Randy with his wife Michelle.
At that time Paul, who had a long time interest in registered Holsteins and had been tagging and keeping breeding records for many years decided to become a member of Holstein Canada. With the support of area Holstein Ontario field representative Adrian Vander Wielen the cows were registered at 50 per cent pure and most of the heifers at 75 per cent. Just a few short years later, over half of the herd is purebred with most of the remainder at 87 per cent and 75 per cent. Today the calves are registered by the local DHI customer service representative.

The Guernseys are pleased with their herd progress in production and conformation and in particular mammary systems with an average score of 81 and feet and legs with an average score of 82. The current herd favourite is Randale Buckeye 146, who classified VG88 in her third lactation and has since calved again. She has a promising Reginald daughter due soon.
Not a large farm by today’s standards but with a focus on efficiency and attention to detail, along with dedication, hard work and a passion for As an enrollment herd they had their first classification in June 2007 farming, Randy married Michelle in 2009. Cows enjoy pasture in the summer and a daily trip outside for exercise and heat detection. Although the herd is small by today’s standards, a focus on cow comfort, improved longevity and improved fat tests remain the key components to maximizing the herd profitability long-term. The herd BCA is 209-206-230 and current classification is eight VG, 16 GP, one G and seven not classified. Warren & Trudy MacIntosh Farm: Glengarry Stock Farms Herd Size: 65-70 Milk Cows Operation Type: Tie-stall Location: Apple Hill, Ontario 1. What traits do you like the most about the Holstein breed? Since I was young, I have always liked the dairy strength and overall width of the best Holsteins in the breed. From their muzzle to their rump, that width is the Holstein cow’s advantage in regards to potentially producing large volumes of milk with ease.
9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out that you wish you had been told? Be honest with yourself. Breed from the honest cows in your herd and you will be rewarded with honest hardworking cows – it’s not always the show animal that breeds the best for the future. It would be nice to think this but certainly not always the case!
2. What are your breeding goals? Breeding cows with balance and longevity from bulls that have 10. We have tested just under 20 per cent of the herd. It’s a great tool for selecting the poor ones in a population, but I’m not convinced we 3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program? I like to focus on daughter proven and genomically proven sires can separate good from great which makes up a majority of a herd that exhibit high values for LPI, TPI, udder health, net merit and that is selected highly on LPI or TPI. Which bulls do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years and today? I started breeding the cows here at Glengarry when I was 11 to 12 years of age. My father liked my interest in mating the cows from 4-H club work, and hence my interest in reading the Holstein Journal and the Holstein World magazines began at a young age. Starting from the mid 70’s my favorite bulls were Seiling Rockman, Northcroft Admiral Citation, Roybrook Starlite, Butlerview Mattador, To-Mar Blackstar 7. Comestar Laurie Shiek VG-88-23*, she had great bone quality and around that you like working with and they care for animals, has a femininity. Laurie Shiek contributed greatly to the breed. 6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? We have a herd consisting of mostly one cow family of reasonably high producing milk cows that complete eight to ten generations of Very Good or Excellent cows at this time. Our milk records are modest, (around 11,000 kilograms on average) – no real extremes, no really high indexes or no really high deviations within the herd, however are quite genomically friendly for production and health traits.
