editor’s note

I

Embracing Change It’s taken me a long time to realize it, but I’ve come to accept that change is good. Becoming a mom has definitely taught me that lesson, but so has letting go of the reigns of The Link this past year. A big thank you to Julie McIntosh and her team at 31st Line for putting their own special touch on the magazine and making some small - yet important - changes that have made The Link an even better publication! In reading this issue’s feature on Murrayholm Farms, or our profiles on this year’s Ontario Dairy Youth Winners, you’ll find that they’re embracing change too. Whether they’ve installed a robot, purchased a new TMR mixer, raised headrails in the barn, started milking three times a day or outsourced their harvest work to custom operators, every change made was done with a goal of making things better. Better for cow comfort, better for productivity, and ultimately, better for the bottom line. It’s easy to get into a rut when you perform the same tasks on a day-to-day basis. But as you go about your chores, think about all the little changes you could make that have the potential to lead to big results. As George Bernard Shaw is famous for saying, “Progress is impossible without change, and those who cannot change their minds, cannot change anything.” Sincerely,

Andrea Emond, Link Editor aemond@ontario.holstein.ca

T

general mana ger’s messa ge Wide scope of dairy farms The entryway of the barn belonging to the Catt family of Narwood Holsteins in St. Thomas displays signs from the various agriculture groups they are associated with. As a tour stop on the District Tours last February, I was certainly thankful to see they had their Ontario Holstein sign as part of the group! The Catt’s display made me realize just how many different organizations a dairy farm is involved with on a regular basis. Certainly, the milk industry in Ontario is a predominant one, and showing the public that the blue cow means that their milk products actually come from Ontario farms is a benefit. Ontario dairy farms are also a large part of the beef industry and that is evident by the high price of bull calves and cull cows in the past year to fill demand for beef products. Farm acreages have increased due to higher commodity prices and dairy farmers are taking advantage of opportunities to sell extra crop not needed for feed. Although the Canadian dairy industry benefits from supply management, and our milk is marketed and sold to processors, dairy farmers themselves have become more of an advertisement and marketing tool for milk. There are billboards, transport trailer wraps, social media, print advertising all illustrating the connection between the products Canadians consume and the farmers who produce those products. The strength of our industry has come from people who have become involved in organizations that are associated with their operation. We ask that you continue to show our next generation that it is rewarding to be involved in community organizations that help shape the industry that they will be a part of in the future. Sincerely,

Jason French, General Manager branch@ontario.holstein.ca

County Club Spotlight

A

Featuring

Lambton County Holstein Club

By Rebecca Tamminga

A STRONG AND UNITED HOLSTEIN CLUB IS A SOURCE OF PRIDE AND TRADITION FOR MANY HOLSTEIN BREEDERS. At the Ontario Holstein Branch, we work closely with County Holstein Clubs from across the province and get to witness first-hand the dedication and enthusiasm of club executives and members alike. We are pleased to showcase the history and achievements of county clubs across Ontario.

Mawacres Warden Patricia EX-3E-15*

Errolea Milan Penny EX-92-4E 6*

1. What is the club’s background and history? After the formation of the Lambton Cattle Breeding Association, the Lambton Holstein Breeders Association was started on May 29, 1950. The founding members included Arnold Steven and Russell Williamson of Plympton, Merton Todd and William McRorie of Warwick, Murray Dewhirst of Enniskillen, and Harold James and Donald McLennan of Sarnia.

2. Describe the makeup of your club. Today the club is comprised of nine Directors and one Secretary/ Treasurer. Sandy Kingdon is our first female President. Rebecca Tamminga has been the club Secretary/Treasurer for three years, taking over from Richard Somerville who acted in the role for a remarkable 24 years prior. Kevin Somerville is our Councilor.

3. What annual activities does your club organize? The club meets approximately five or six times a year. In July we hold our annual Family Day and BBQ, which attracts close to 200 people at one of our members’ farms. We also host a day of golf in August for all of the golf enthusiasts among us. 4. What advice would you give to other clubs wanting to grow their membership and become more active? We would suggest starting with small activities and ensure you organize, advertise and specialize these events. This will ensure they stay manageable for your club and will allow room for later growth if they are successful. Another key piece of advice is to engage the younger members! They have fresh ideas and are eager to get involved. 5. How do you involve youth in your club? We support the Lambton TD 4-H Dairy Classic team each year, as well as the Britespan show. Also, each member who brings his or her 4-H project to the county show receives $20. One third of our executive is under 30 years of age, which is a positive reinforcement that youth is continuing to stay involved after their 4-H years. 6. What is one area you would like to improve? It would be great to follow the lead of other clubs and start to use more technology in our communications. At the moment we communicate through e-mail, phone and a yearly newsletter, which is sent to our members. We are currently looking at the possibility of a quarterly e-newsletter. 7. Where do you see the club in a few years down the road? Though the herd numbers in Lambton have decreased significantly in the past years, the club itself has continued to thrive. With a strong membership, we hope to continue our success into the future. www.ontario.holstein.ca

Meet the Stratford Beacon Herald’s 2013 Citizen of the Year! Not only has Gary West been the booming voice behind the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic for more years than we can remember, he was recently named the Stratford Beacon Herald’s 2013 Citizen of the Year! Gary - a dairy farmer turned egg producer from Shakespeare, ON – has spent countless hours volunteering his time with organizations such as the Stratford and District Agricultural Society, the Optimist Club of Shakespeare, the Shakespeare and Community Athletic Association, the Perth and Waterloo zone of the Egg Farmers of Ontario and Family Services of Perth-Huron. “You’re always given a lot when you’re younger,” he said in an interview with the Beacon Herald on May 21. “It was time for me to give back.” Congratulations, Gary, and thank you for all you do for your community!

Golden Girl Cynthia Bumstead (our winter cover girl) was thrilled to receive a gold medal recently at the Bluewater Regional Science & Technology Fair for her project examining the correlation between show calves and their later classification scores. As a keen participant for the past five years, Cynthia has studied such issues as grey whales, plants and fish. Her parents, Rob and Alice Bumstead of Loyalyn Holsteins in Owen Sound, ON couldn’t be more proud. “She’s won a medal every year, but this is her first gold,” says Alice. “It’s a real honour.”

“A proud county is only that because of the children of its soil,” reads a faded newspaper clipping taken from a March 29, 1956 edition of The Statesman. The clipping – preserved by the Brown family of Browview Farms in Newcastle, ON – pays tribute to the late Ed Summers, a well-known and amiable Agricultural Rep for Durham County who served in this position for 27 years and coached many 4-H judging teams to victory during this time. Though Summers and his achievements are highlighted in the article, there’s no denying the fact that scores of men and women from Ontario’s “Banner County of Durham” have gone on to achieve great things, both within the agricultural industry as a whole and the dairy sector in particular. According to a 2012 Directory published by the Durham Club, only 29 producers within the county were actively still shipping milk. However, the pride these members have for their cows, their farms and their families is as strong today as it was when the Holstein Friesian Breeders Club of Durham County was first established back in 1917. In early December of that year, A.A. Powers and A.A. Gibson decided to gage the interest of Holstein breeders in the area on forming a club. They sent out invitations and on Dec. 7 at 8 p.m., about a dozen enthusiastic gentlemen gathered at the S.O.E. Hall in Newcastle to discuss the idea further. The men decided to proceed with the club’s formation and adopted the bylaws of the Brant County Holstein Club, with a few amendments. Mr. Stephen Jose of Newcastle was elected 1st President and A.J. Tamblyn of Orono was elected Vice. Six directors, including R.R. Stevens of Glen Rae Dairy in Bowmanville, were elected to the Board. Membership fees were set at $1 for the year.

Ontario’s “Banner Celebrates 75 Yea

“When a cow makes a single record that has never before been achieved in Canada, it is a matter for commendation. It is even more so when continuous year-by-year production creates a total yield in excess of all others under similar conditions. It is in this field of continuous production that Olive Burke Fayne 283103 has distinguished herself by becoming the Canadian Champion for fat production in first four lactations, all in the 305-day division. With the excellent start which you have given her, your friends in Durham County look forward to the day when they may boast of one of Canada’s greatest lifetime producers developed by James T. Brown, Newcastle, Ont.” By 1957, the Durham County Show had grown to be the largest in its district, with 156 head shown and $638 in prize money awarded, and by 1966, Holstein Fieldman Gerry Nelson claimed it was the largest in Ontario. The show has always been held at Orono and over the years, the club has done a lot to support the fair. In the late ‘70s, members helped to financially support the construction of a new building at the fairgrounds and even after putting in long days on the farm, came together to help with the build. Though the show is now held indoors in that very building, past Secretary-Treasurer, Brenda Metcalf, recalls one of the last times the show was held outside. “It was held at night, in a tent with borrowed bleachers and pig tail lighting in 1978,” she says.

This year will mark 75 years of Durham’s Holstein Show and current club Secretary, Natalie Kellogg, is excited about what’s in store. The club is holding a raffle to help celebrate the milestone, which includes a two-night stay at the Westin Harbour Castle in Toronto from November 13-15, passes to the Royal Winter Fair and spending In 1939, R.M. Holtby of neighbouring Ontario County introduced the money of $600. During the show, Natalie says the club is organizing first Holstein Show in Durham County. The Tamblyn family’s Holstein roots run deep in Durham County, with the first record of them owning Holsteins dating back to the early 1900’s. Bill’s grandfather, Fred, and his great-uncles, Milton and John, were all cow enthusiasts. They bred and owned exceptional purebred Holstein cattle and lived on adjoining farms near Orono within ¾ of a mile of one another on a road now named after them.

One cannot possibly discuss the quality cattle that have come out of Durham county in years past without making mention of the famous foundation cow, Balsam Brae Pluto Sovereign. Known simply as “the white cow,” Sovereign was owned by R.B. Brown of Bowmanville and sold to Roy Ormiston for $700. She was nominated for a slew of All-Canadians in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, winning All-Canadian Mature Cow in “The quality of cattle in Durham County is Bill recalls a story of his great1956. She was Canada’s second greatest cattle in Durham County is a testament to the skill and knowledge milk and butter cow in 1917 and a number of today’s distinguished our breeders have,” says Kellogg. “You can see this at our county herds date back to her. show and the judges have commented on the quality right down the line in many classes.” Other famous cows followed. In the 1950s, Erla and Francis Jose’s high-production duo of Mina Fayne Korndyke and Gladibrae Governor Elsie became the first dam-daughter pair ever to reach 200,000 lbs of milk respectively. The news quickly travelled across Durham County and the Holstein Journal covered the story the same year.

Gerry Brown (whose grandmother was a Tamblyn) has fond memories of showing at Orono over the years. “We had 24 head there one year,” he says. “I remember being 15-years-old and being responsible for trucking some of them!” he adds with a chuckle. He also recalls his dad showing bulls years ago and remembers selling a lot of purebred Browview breeding stock in the years that followed.

One of Elsie’s full brothers, Gladibrae Governor Dandy, was sold as a calf to a small AI unit in Galilea, Israel, in 1946 and went on to sire At 80 years of age, Gerry also remembers back to the days when milk over 2500 daughters. A milk truck would then come and take the cans into Toronto and bring back the empties at night. “I still wake up at 4 a.m. most mornings,” Gerry says. “I just don’t get up anymore!”

All-Canadian 2-year-old the same year. She was sold to Hanover Hill and went on to become All-Canadian 3-year-old the next year. She was one of the last cows the Muirs took to the show. “You wonder how you kept up with it back then, but when we were young, it seemed like no big deal.”

In the early ‘50s, Browview Farms became the first farm in Canada to receive bulk tank pick-up of milk. Gerry remembers it like it was yesterday and recalls how his dad, who became President of Holstein Canada in 1958, first learned of the technology while attending a conference in Wisconsin. He was so interested in the idea that he contacted a supplier upon his return. As luck would have it, the DeLaval dealership in Peterborough was in the final stages of developing a bulk tank prototype and Gerry’s father volunteered to test it out on his farm. “My dad was an innovator,” says Gerry, “and cows were the backdrop of his life.” Gerry’s brother, Lynn, echoes that sentiment. “Dad was always seeking the best agricultural technology available,” he says. “He had the first tractor in the county, but was the last to let the horses he loved go.” James Brown passed away in 1960 as the result of a brain tumor, but Gerry and his wife, Shirley, continued on with the Browview prefix until the herd dispersed in 1992. “I still miss those cows,” Gerry says.

In 2013, the Muir family was presented with a “Century of Holstein” award from Holstein Canada, and although Sandy wasn’t alive to see it, it made the family – including his mother, Mildred - very proud.

A quick scan of past Durham County show champions shows one prefix appearing over and over again. Elderslie Holsteins were a mainstay in the Orono show ring from the early 1950s until the mid 1980s and the Muir family had Grand Champion nine times during this period. In fact, one cow, Elderslie Fond Moolie, won the show three years in a row from 1978 to 1980! The Muirs moved to Durham county from Scarborough in 1921, and since that time, have been breeding exceptional high-type cows under the Elderslie prefix, a name which originated from their ancestral home in the west of Scotland.

“My mom was the backbone of the operation,” Alex says. “She washed the blankets and kept everything running smoothly,” he adds. “At 86-years-old, she lives on the home farm and still likes to look out the window and see the cows.” At the centerfold of Durham County’s latest breeder’s directory is an aerial shot of a well-kept homestead and farm, with some remarkable cows carrying the tag line, “Where Families Have a Meaning.” The ad belongs to none other than three-time Master Breeder herd, Altona Lea Farms and pays tribute to its founder, the late Frank Barkey. Frank was a well-respected industry leader and served as the Ontario Holstein Branch President in 1988. He was a mentor to so many in the dairy industry and countless young 4-Hers looked to him for guidance. A familiar name both within Durham County and across the province, Altona Lea’s focus on homebred excellence has earned them great show success over the years. They had Grand Champion at Durham seven times from 1982 to 1998 and have been Premier Breeder at the show a remarkable 22 times! The Barkeys are proud of the legacy their father has left behind and are looking forward to completing an eighth generation of homebred Excellent cows at Altona Lea in the near future.

On September 4, the Durham County Holstein Club will come together Alex Muir, who runs the operation today along with his brother, to commemorate 75 years of Holstein shows at Orono Fairgrounds. James, says that the county show was always a highlight for their With a rich history behind them, there will be a lot to celebrate. family. “My dad, Sandy, was always real active in showing,” he says, “We are not a big county but we have a very strong and passionate “and he had quite a few champions over the years.” group of breeders,” says Natalie. “With several new young members Elderslie Johanna Judy was Grand Champion in 1981 and Reserve involved, the future of the club is very bright.”

Maxville Holstein Show Grand and Reserve Champion at Spring Discovery Show

Spring Discovery Show

by Teresa Osborne

This year, exhibitors from across Ontario and Quebec made it out in the chilly weather on March 26 and 27 to exhibit at the Ancaster Fairgrounds in Jerseyville Ontario. Kyle MacLeod from Woodstock, Ontario, did a great job testing the skills of the exhibitors in the Showmanship Competition. The competition was split into three categories, Junior, Intermediate and Senior. The Junior showmanship was awarded to Emily DeKlein, and the Intermediate went to Joceyln Forster. Judge MacLeod then named Deanna Ringelberg as the Senior Showmanship winner. Each exhibitor was presented with an Ontario Spring Discovery garment bag, and class winners were each awarded a Jensen show halter. The Holstein show began Thursday morning as Judge Julien Chabot began sorting through the animals. Junior Champion was presented to the first place Junior Yearling, Mapel Wood Windhammer Elegance, owned by Mapel Wood Farms. Reserve Junior Champion was awarded to the first place Intermediate Yearling, Ms Andis GW Arian, owned by Howard-Haven Holsteins, and the Honourable Mention Junior Champion was presented to the first place Summer Yearling, JM Valley Lavanguard Solo, owned by Mapel Wood Farms.

Murrayholm Holsteins

Ahead ofThe Curve T Every multi-generational farm has a story about its beginnings and Murrayholm Farms of Martintown, Ontario is no exception.

Photos by Tara McKinven

The story gives us a small insight into the determination, passion and pioneering spirit of the Murray clan. William Murray, Campbell Murray’s great-grandfather, went to California during the gold rush in the mid 1800’s and used the money he accumulated to buy his homestead in the eastern tip of Stormont County. Campbell’s father, Marland, was active in the export business in the 1960’s and was Holstein Canada President in 1969. Campbell and Alison started out by buying a farm adjacent to the home farm in 1963. They put in a milking parlour in 1967, certainly a progressive and bold decision at that time. A new free-stall barn was built in 2002, and with renovations and additions, they now have the potential to milk up to 115 cows.

Campbell and Alison and their family continue the tradition of striving to improve their farm, while at the same time stressing the importance of family and contributing to their community. Their eldest daughter, Sandra, and her husband David Fawcett (Coachside – Master Breeder Herd 2009) farm in Winchester with their two children, Will and Abigail. Daughter, Susan, and her husband Todd Brownlee, live in a house adjoining the farm with their two children, Madison and Sam.

Currently, 80 cows are milked by two A4 Lely robots installed in 2011, with the total cattle numbers now at 180 head. Campbell and Alison continued to purchase more land as they grew and now own approx 750 acres. Campbell was President of the Ontario Holstein Branch in 1985 and both he and Alison have been pillars in their community and church.

Growing up, Dale always knew he loved cropping and farm equipment and remembers asking his parents for a new tractor as his graduation gift when he graduated the University of Guelph from the agricultural program back in 1990. He knew he wanted to come home to the farm after graduation, moving into a house just off the main farm where he now lives with his wife Karen, and their two

daughters, Maggie and Myrah. Dale is meticulous about his cropping old; and Murrayholm Goldwyn Leah, Nominated All-Canadian and practices and the results speak for themselves. All-Ontario 4-H Summer Yearling back in 2009 for Alex Chabot. Devon was a little more uncertain growing up in what he wanted to do, but in the end, the love of ‘his cows’ brought him happily back home to farm. Growing up, local veterinarian Dr. Brian MacNaughton, helped Devon learn the ropes of herd health, furthering the teachings he received from his parents. A few years ago, Devon moved into the home he grew up in with his wife, Gwynydd, and the couple welcomed their first son, Owen, in February 2014. To this day, Devon’s concentration is still on the cows, whereas Dale continues to love the crops. These different interests allow the brothers to complement one another and concentrate on the areas of farming they care most about. Even with these separate responsibilities, both brothers are eager to help in any area and get the chores done together. Devon describes the current state of farming as an exciting time.“Before, you couldn’t afford to buy from top cow families, but now, you can buy good cows from big-time families and big-time bulls.” It’s no surprise then, that the best thing about farming for Devon is the “constant quest of improving the herd.” This quest has pushed Devon to branch out into genetics, embryos, and the show ring, building upon his parents’ legacy as he goes. Highlights to date for Devon include co-bred Cherry Crest Aspen Leek, who was 1st June calf at Quebec International Holstein Show in 2009; Murrayholm Goldyn Tania, who was Grand Champion at Stormont County Show in 2009 as a Senior 3-year-old and Honourable Mention at Stormont County Show in 2010 as a 4-year-

The KPMG Partnership bought three lots in the 2012 Sale of Stars, including Rugg-Doc Obsv Carmindsay VG-86 2-year-old daughter of the famous Ralma Goldwyn Carmel EX-92-2E DOM GMD. She is a daughter of Supersire from Larcrest Cordial, a VG-87 2-year-old and the #1 Genomic Type cow in the U.S. at 4.52 GPTAT at time of purchase. Her embryos have in been in demand around the world and she is an example of the opportunities available in the business today. When considering partnerships, Devon has been keen for the opportunity to learn from his knowledgeable partners. In terms of decision-making, he says it is a simple as getting together as a group over breakfast to talk things over and decide on the next steps. The

Leading her way to the top York County’s Kandice Coates’ strong leadership skills and involvement in 4-H and at Ridgetown College has positioned her to follow her passion in the dairy industry.

A

As a competitive senior member of Sutton 4-H Dairy Club, Kandice has taken on a leadership role by providing 4-H projects from her home farm for members who do not live on a farm. She has given up her time to teach and guide less-experienced kids to lead 4-H heifers. Each year, between four and six members borrow calves from their home operation. Kandice has been privileged to represent York County at the 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal Winter Fair every year since 2008. “My most memorable moments in 4-H are when I can see my hard work pay off through my successes at shows and our achievements as a county,” Kandice says. One of her fondest years was in 2010, when she made the showmanship cut at the 4-H Dairy Classic with Coateshill Sahara Soleil. That same year, she was recognized as the most outstanding 4-H Dairy member in York County. Last year, 4-H leader Gary Pegg encouraged Kandice to compete at the 4-H clipping competition at the Ontario Summer Show in Lindsay. Kandice says participating in the clipping competition was very rewarding because she was able to receive advice from experienced fitters and it gave her the opportunity to improve her skills. She plans to compete again this year.

BY CELESTE COOK Kandice says that the Dairy Barn Management course, taught by Rob Reid, and Dairy Production as well as Dairy Nutrition and Selection, taught by Phil McEwen, were among her favourite classes while attending Ridgetown. Phil McEwen’s enthusiasm was evident in the way he taught and he has since become one of Kandice’s mentors in the industry. She always appreciated the way he always encouraged students to get involved and included students in his research trials that were held on the campus. “Going to Ridgetown College for Agriculture were the best two years of my life!” Kandice says. Kandice was very involved in several student-run groups while attending school. She was the dairy head for Spring Expo this year, which required her to organize the dairy show and help ensure everyone knew how to show properly, as participants had a wide variety of experience levels. She was a volunteer for Orientation week and also dedicated her time as a member of student council. Kandice truly took advantage of the opportunities that being a West Ag at Ridgetown offered and was awarded the Paul Patten Beattie Memorial Award as Most Personable Student recently at her graduation ceremony.

“Gary has helped me to push my boundaries and improve my workmanship, especially as a team member representing York County,” says Kandice.

Currently, Kandice is working at North York Farmers store and after her “day job,” she Kandice is impressively also a Holstein Canada Junior Member and still helps at home with chores. a success in its fifth year

From May 1 – 3, a group of young dairy enthusiasts came together at the University of Guelph campus for a conference in dairy management, co-managed by the Ontario Holstein Branch and 4-H Ontario. The conference, now in its fifth year, saw 40 participants ages 18-25 from across the province gather to learn valuable finance and business skills that will help them manage successful dairy operations in the future.

T

The workshop was developed by the Ontario Holstein Branch and 4-H Ontario in 2010 in order to fill an education gap in business management within the industry. “Five years ago when we decided to put this program on, our goal was to give young people more education on the business side of dairy farming,” says Jason French, General Manager of the Ontario Holstein Branch. Though the program has expanded and new topics are explored each year, the initial aim is the same. “We’re really trying to make sure the Dairy Sen$e program gives them some practical and financial knowledge that they can take home and use in their own operation,” he says. The conference was kicked off by an energetic presentation from Andrew Campbell of Fresh Air Media. Campbell, a past Dairy Sen$e participant and co-coordinator himself, now farms alongside his parents on a dairy farm in Middlesex County. was one that resonated with the young, tech-savvy crowd. “You don’t have to use technology to be a successful farmer,” he quotes from Rick Youlton of Southwest Ag Partners, “but you have to compete against those who do.” Campbell reminded participants that they should be ready at any time to answer some of the tough questions the public may have about dairy farming and that as producers of a product consumed daily by so many people worldwide, dairy farmers earn a high degree of trust. “People trust you as farmers. Be proud of who you are; be proud to show off your farms.” Philip Armstrong of Armstrong Manor, a sixth generation 500-head dairy farm in Caledon, Ontario, was the conference’s next speaker. He focused on the importance of cow comfort and stressed that even a series of small changes can result in big improvements. “One thing I want everyone to take home is cow comfort,” he says. “You don’t have to build a new barn, but there are so many little simple things we can do to let that cow meet her potential.” Always keeping the bunkers full, hiring experts to help with nutrition and installing mats and sawdust are just some of the keys to their success Philip noted.

And consistency, he added – doing things right every day – is what he says will move you from average to better. The day continued with participants receiving information from Farm Credit Canada, TD Canada Trust, CIBC and AgCareers.com in a series of breakout sessions. The after dinner speakers were Simon and Kristina Signer of Moorefield who told of their recent succession plan for Simon’s family’s Brown Swiss herd. To have a successful plan, they advised the group to use financial professionals to work with on the financial side, but noted that working with a mediator or succession-planning specialist is just as important. The key, they say, is to have open communication about every aspect of the business in order to eliminate any surprise decisions later. Day two of the conference began bright and early with participants boarding the bus for a day of farm tours. The first stop was a tour of Heeg Dairy Inc., a dairy farm owned by Sytse and Anita Heeg located in New Hamburg, Ontario. Sytse Heeg moved to Canada with his parents and brother in 1999 and he and his wife Anita have installed two DeLaval automatic milking system to milk his herd of 120 cows. While at the farm, participants learned about using DeLaval’s Herd Navigator for reproduction, disease prevention and transition cow management. In the afternoon, the group continued to DenLee Farms Ltd., in New Hamburg, Ontario, owned by Dennis and Sandy Kuepfer and their son and daughter-in-law, Greg and Shelley. Here participants admired cows under both the Den-Lee and Trinity prefixes while hearing from industry speakers about the important role that milk quality, land stewardship and genetic selection play in any successful dairy operation. That evening, after returning from the farms, DFO board member,

42

Ian Harrop, brought greetings and explained the numerous markets that they manage. He also discussed the future of dairy product marketing and how he suspects this will occur in the future. Following Ian’s presentation, participants were divided into smaller groups and tasked with the job of analyzing farm financials in order to make recommendations in a formal presentation the next day. The following morning, the groups presented their findings to their peers and a panel of judges including David Rose from CIBC, Mark Carson from EastGen and Jason French of Ontario Holstein. The winning team included Kathleen Baird, Melissa Stewart and Eric Wright and they will receive an all-expenses paid trip to World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI this fall. To conclude the conference, Doug Jack from the firm of Borden Ladner Gervais LLP spoke to the group about Succession Planning and the importance of open communication and involving all members of the family in the plan. Finally, all Dairy Sen$e participants were presented with certificates for completion of the conference and the Ontario Joint Dairy Breeds recognition award for Outstanding Individual at Dairy Sen$e was announced. Ashley Knapton of Almonte, Ontario, was this year’s recipient and was recognized for showing great passion and dedication throughout the three-day event. She will serve as an outstanding ambassador for the dairy industry as she accompanies her winning peers to World Dairy Expo this fall. The Ontario Holstein Branch and 4-H Ontario would like to thank all of this year’s sponsors, supporters, participants, host farms and guest speakers for helping to make fifth annual Dairy Sen$e such a success. www.ontario.holstein.ca

Holstein Canada’s New Herd Enrollment Program Jamaine Holsteins, Wallenstein, ON

By Angela Howard

Dairy farming may not have been what they grew up with, but 26-year-old James Gingrich and his wife, Elaine, are very pleased with their choice to milk cows under the Jamaine Holsteins prefix in Wallenstein, Ontario.

James and his wife, Elaine, milk cows under the Jamaine Holsteins prefix in Wallenstein, Ontario. (Above right) The milking lineup at Jamaine. The farm takes a balanced breeding approach, with an emphasis on type, to assist with longevity within the herd. (Below right) Westside Sive Laura is one of the herd favourites at Jamaine Holsteins. Bred by Westside Farm in New Hamburg, Laura is scored VG-87 and turned 10 this year.

W

When the neighboring dairy farm became available for purchase, James – a member of the old-order Mennonite community - and his father discussed converting the barn to beef, the type of operation that they already operated. After some careful consideration, James realized that this could be a great opportunity to expand into the dairy industry and try his hand at this new farming opportunity. With his new entry into the world of dairy farming, James knew that he could use some sound advice from someone already established in the industry. A meeting with an acquaintance of his, and long-time dairy farmer, Stewart Snyder (Westside Holsteins) proved to be life changing for James. Stewart was overstocked with cattle at the time and was able to sell James and Elaine his entire milking herd of 40 cows and 12 young stock. With his keen interest in genetics, Stewart also served as somewhat of a mentor for James, helping him to get started into purebred cattle and the programs offered. James and Elaine quickly realized the value of owning purebred cattle and the importance of the programs offered to better their management. James feels that registration, classification, DHI and AI all work together and are beneficial to maintain optimum management practices. While still learning about the art of breeding cattle, James uses his ProGen reports, which combines the information he gets from DHI and Classification. In the future he would like to spend more time analyzing conformation traits to select bulls more accurately on his own. The breeding goals at Jamaine Holsteins are to achieve a solid type herd with good production. James feels that a balanced breeding approach, with emphasis on type, will assist with the longevity in his herd. His ideal cow would be a trouble-free EX cow with a tremendous udder, balance and depth of rib that offers high production over several lactations. Although it is not an immediate goal, a Master Breeder shield

www.ontario.holstein.ca

would be a great accomplishment, but for now James is looking forward to the day that he receives his first EX cow during a classification visit. He sees the value in Embryo Transfers and would like to flush some of his favorite cows in the future as well as bring in some new genetics through the purchase of embryos. James feels fortunate to be able to work with his father and brothers, sharing equipment and feed if needed. He is very pleased with his 33cow tie-stall barn but could see a slight expansion to 40 stalls if he can acquire more quota. James sees a good future in the dairy industry and hopes that if his boys (Daryl, 2 and Ryan, 7 months) want to farm in the future that he will be able to set them up. For now, this young couple is very satisfied with the choices that they have made thus far and are grateful to the service providers that they work with and the dairy farmers that have assisted them. The future looks bright for the Gingrich family at Jamaine Holsteins! Experience the benefits of animal registration and classification! • Available to all herds who have not classified in two or more years. • Herd consultation visit with an experienced classifier. Discuss the benefits of classification and how the information can be used on farm. • No charge herd visit fee (regular or mid round) for first classification. • For qualifying herds with no registration activity for 3 or more years the program will also offer: – Registration fee discounted by 50% for all animals (excluding base) registered within 6 months of commitment to the program. – No charge to transfer ownership of animals resident in the herd prior. – To qualify for the registration savings herds must agree to participate in at least one classification visit. • Ontario Holstein Field staff are available to help you with the registration process.

pursuit of

A new excellent cow or a very good two-year-old is a breeding accomplishment. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. From March through to the end of May 2014, there were 450 1st time Excellent cows and 912 Very Good two-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. mission statement

Branch News

Ontario Holstein Branch expresses dissatisfaction with the closing of Kemptville College

to Jason and Amanda O’Connell, winners of this year’s Ontario Outstanding Young Farmers Award. Jason and Amanda operate Sunol Farm, a 125 head dairy operation in Lanark County. Since taking over Amanda’s family dairy farm eight years ago, they have moved from milking 127 cows filling 70 kgs of quota to milking 90-95 and filling in excess of 120 kgs daily. They grow corn, soybeans and wheat with some pure alfalfa and grass hay on 1500 acres and scout all fields weekly to ensure optimal harvests. The couple embraces new technology

Congratulations

The program was founded in 1979 by the Canadian Junior Chamber/ Jaycees and is open to farmers or couples who derive at least two-thirds of their income from farming operations.

RN TE EC ES EB W U

The Ontario Holstein Branch was disappointed to hear the announcement of the closing of the Kemptville College and that students looking to enrol in the Diploma program will have to seek education elsewhere. After discussion at the Ontario Holstein Board of Directors meeting in April, it was agreed that a letter from the Branch should be written to voice our dissatisfaction with the decision. The letter was addressed to Premier Kathleen Wynne with Hon. Brad Duguid, Minister of Training, Colleges and Universities, Steve Clark, MPP Leeds-Grenville, Randy Pettapiece, MPP Perth-Wellington, Charles Bennett and Hon. Lyle VanClief copied on the letter, due to their efforts to regain education at the college. The letter focused on continuing an agriculture education facility in Eastern Ontario to give young people in this part of the province an opportunity to attend a post-secondary school locally. To keep Kemptville College viable, it was suggested that they continue with an agriculture program that takes in more practical experiences for the students and targets more of an “in the barn” teaching approach rather than strictly an in-class method. As the saying goes, “Good Things Grow in Ontario” and we want to continue to say that “Good People are Educated in Ontario.”

Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers Program (OYF) is a unique program designed to recognize farmers and farm couples who exemplify excellence in their profession.

E O AS NT T ARER IO N

Ontario Holstein Branch President, Gary Cain, and General Manager, Jason French, were recently invited to represent the dairy industry at a recent Farm and Food Care meeting in Niagara. IMPACT (short for Innovative Management and Practical Animal Care Training) is derived from a two-year government funded project designed to discuss the agriculture industry’s animal welfare issues. The meeting’s discussion was built around current conditions and how to ensure animal welfare issues are handled properly in the future. The goal of the project is to target key components that need addressing and develop a plan to make sure that proper animal handling protocol is in place. Further meetings will be held in 2014 to build on the thoughts generated at this meeting and continued support will come from all of the livestock industry.

while aiming to achieve high yields in both milk and crop production. The O’Connells were nominated by the Ontario Holstein Branch and will compete this fall with all regional winners to be named Canada’s Outstanding Young Farmers.

E O AS NT T ARER IO N

Making an IMPACT

To assist and grow the membership of the Ontario Holstein Branch through youth activities, education, breed promotion and act as an advocate for the dairy industry.

Alan & Penny Hawthorne Farm: Bobmur Farms Herd Size: 54 Milk Cows Operation Type: Tie-Stall Location: Listowel, Ontario 1. What is your family’s history with Holsteins? The herd originally was a grade herd of cattle. My parents, Bob and Muriel, took over the farm from my grandparents, Austin and Elizabeth, in the early ‘60s. Purebred Holsteins were introduced with the purchase of a heifer calf and a two-year-old from a local purebred herd. With the influence and encouragement of Western Ontario Field Rep, Gordon Bell, my father began milk recording and classifying in the late sixties. My wife Penny, and I purchased the home farm, cows and quota from my parents in 2005. 2. What are your breeding goals? Our breeding goals are to breed great functional cows that have the ability to produce milk efficiently. We strive to improve the udder quality, feet and legs and longevity within our herd.

had in the herd as well as the continued improvement on udder quality and feet and legs. 7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be? The one thing we would like to improve on within the herd would be fertility, and within the operation, we would like to improve on our heifer raising facilities. 8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why? Rocky Mountain Talent Licorice. We love her frame, openness of rib, great udder and dairy quality and she is backed by generations of great sires and great cows.

3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program? We continue to use classification, as well as milk recording, to assist us with our breeding program. We also continue to implement embryo transfer as well.

9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out that you wish you had been told? Set attainable goals for yourself and stick to them. Don’t be afraid to ask questions from people that you admire and respect within the industry and recognize that not everything happens quickly; 4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation: The ideal cow for our operation is a stylish, high scoring cow with breeding cow families takes time and patience. several generations of high-scoring dams behind her. She’s trouble- 10. How do you use genomic information in your herd and what are your free, great-uddered with great feet and legs that produces quality thoughts on the future of genomics? milk with high components. We use genomic information to improve on certain traits on a per animal basis. We look at the animal individually see what we would 5. What cow in your barn is currently the “Heart of the Herd”? We have several favourites within the herd. Bobmur Kite Nina like to add and go from there. Our focus has been on type, health VG-89 was Intermediate Champion at the 2010 Royal Agricultural traits such as calving ease, somatic cell score and production. When Winter Fair Red and White Holstein Show and presently has nine using genomic young sires, we stick to the cow families that we daughters at the farm. They’re sired by McCutchen, Colt P, Alchemy, know and trust. Attitude and Aladdin, and although none are milking, they all look very promising. Nina herself is due to calve back to Golden Dreams. She is special because she goes back to a cow my parents bred that has produced several generations of VG and EX cows that have performed well both in the barn and in the show ring. Nina stems from the Maudie family, which includes Bobmur Warden Nicky EX 7E.

A second favourite is Bobmur Aftershock Eva VG-87. She is a secondcalver that just keeps getting better as she matures. She classified GP-84 as a two-year-old and was recently raised to VG-87 after calving the second time with a Doorman heifer. She is one of the ones that make you look forward to going to the barn everyday and is an eighth generation homebred VG or EX. Two more that come to mind are Whittier Farms Demello Jitterbug VG-88 and Bobmur Colt P Lavish GP-83. Jitterbug is the result of an embryo purchase and her dam is Fradon Redman Jlow EX-92 USA, a descendant of the Jodie Family at Fradon. Lavish is a polled red and white Colt P from the Stonetown Star Lillian Cow family that was nominated All-Canadian Junior 4-H Calf. She’s just fresh and is milking like crazy.

11. How many cows do you flush each year? How do you market your embryos that are for sale? We do utilize embryo transfer within our herd usually three to four flushes per year. We have marketed embryos both privately and domestically but usually implant the embryos in for ourselves.

12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do you value most? We typically don’t sell a lot of animals as we are still trying to perfect and build our own cow families but find that good functional type traits always sell. Most people want good udders and feet and legs. The traits we value most are mammary system as well as feet and legs. 13. Which bulls do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years and today? The bulls with the most impact in our herd in the past have been Warden, Tempo, Starbuck, Broker and Lee. The bulls that have impact on our herd today are Gibson, Sanchez and Aftershock.

14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Why? We try to practice good management all around with emphasis on cow care. We feel exercise, good feed quality and cow comfort is 6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? We are proud to continue to be able to breed cows from a strong most important. Healthy, happy cows make profitable long-lasting foundation base. We’re pleased with the production increase we’ve cows and cow families.
