S
summer Lovin’! Summer is here, (or at least the calendar tells us it is) and for many of us the change of season brings a change of pace. For some it is a time to maybe get away from the farm for a few days to visit the cottage or go camping. For others like myself, it is show season and we spend time training cows and calves to lead and working with 4-H members. Or summer brings on hay season where people try and make the best quality feed for the next year. Summer seems to create so many different memories for different people. In this issue, we meet a variety of breeders who have memories and goals that have been created throughout their career. They all strive to breed balanced cows and make important changes of their farms. Some of them have been forced like Roosburg Holsteins after their fire or the Dairy Youth Winners whose changes have improved efficiencies and cow comfort. I wish you all a fabulous summer and hope that you can enjoy some family time while the kids are home from school. Sincerely,

Fortunately for us, the farming community is changing for the better. Many look at the future and have the hope of the family farm staying alive, some say they are going to be a thing of the past. But as we have seen from history, as the next generation starts to become more and more involved in the day to day work, they bring with them new ideas, breathing new life into the family farm. As I raise my two young children, I wonder what changes they will bring to the farm and how those ideas will keep the family farm going for another generation. One thing I know for sure is that they will become part of the great farming community. Recently with mixed emotions, we announced that our General Manager, Jason French would be leaving the Ontario Holstein Branch as he embarks on the next path in his career after eight years. On behalf of the board of directors, I would like to thank Jason for his guidance and leadership. We wish him the best of luck in his new adventure. As the Ontario Holstein Branch heads into this time of change, I know we will build on the solid foundation of our past as we head to our future. Day on the Farm
Educating the public about where their milk comes from and how dairy farmers raise and treat their cows are key to keeping our industry alive. These photos are from Sheldon Creek Dairy, owned by the den Haan family of Haanview Holsteins who hosted a Day on the Farm event on June 21 where they had over 1,000 people visit. As part of Dairy Farmers of Ontario’s 50th Anniversary, 14 farms hosted Open Farm Days on the weekend of June 27th and 28th where thousands of people toured dairy farms as well.

Lowell Lindsay Named 2015 National Dairy Shrine Pioneer
University of Guelph Students earn top honours at the North American Intercollegiate Dairy Challenge OAC fourth-year students Laura Donkers, Myranda Morrison, Courtney O’Neill and Kevin Reijnen competed against teams from eight other schools and came up with the best plan to improve farm efficiency. During the annual event, teams visit and evaluate a dairy farm business and prepare a presentation of recommended management enhancements, including suggestions for nutrition, reproduction, milking procedures, animal health, housing and financial management. This year, 32 teams competed in four farm groups. The other first-place winners were California Polytechnic State University, Washington State University and University of Tennessee. It is the fifth win for Guelph in 10 years. Retired U of G professors John Walton and Ken Leslie, along with alumnus Mark Carson, teach the course and coach the team.
Each year the National Dairy Shrine honors three or four ‘pioneers’ of the dairy industry. An anonymous selection committee selects these pioneers based on their professional affiliations and activities, civic and community involvement and outstanding contribution to the dairy industry. “It is a great pleasure and honour to support the nomination of Lowell for the National Dairy Shrine Pioneer Award on behalf of Semex,” says Paul Larmer, Semex Chief Executive Officer. “When I think of Lowell’s career, it is a reflection of this man’s love and passion for our industry, including his career, cows and also his various and significant accomplishments. And, while his career has been highlighted by the sires acquired, the daughters of these bulls will continue to influence our industry well into the future, as will the thousands of keen breeders, showmen, fitters and dairy youth worldwide that have been fortunate enough to learn from one of our industry’s true artists.”

The annual Black and White show has been a focal point of the summer calendar for breeders in the Glengarry area for 75 years. It has provided breeders an opportunity to don their whites, bring out their best animals to compare with neighbours, and get together with friends and colleagues from this great business.
the famous herd before it was sold by T. B. Macauley’s estate. Some of these young bulls bought as calves, were thrown into the backseat of the family automobile for the trip home to Glengarry. This would never happen in present time, but at the time, a bull from Mount Victoria was a huge family farm investment.
The show got its beginning in 1940 with the help of John Dalrymple and Bob Holtby and was held at the St. Lawrence Valley Agricultural Society Fair in Williamstown. Bob Holtby was the Holstein fieldman who helped originate many of the earliest Holstein shows in Ontario. A show history notes there were 88 entries of purebreds shown by 13 exhibitors with a total of $296 paid in prize money.
Howes also remembers the time when it was common for people in the county who had nice bulls to show them at the fair. Bulls that were shown usually sold fast and at a premium prices.
“The Naylors had this great big bull that they showed,” recalls Howes. “They used to give him a ‘twenty-sixer’ of rye before the show. It was kind of like a tranquilizer. It seemed to keep the bulls quiet and easy It was a custom at the time that the county show would alternate enough to handle. But looking back, it was pretty dangerous,” adds from one year to the next between the two agricultural societies in Howes. For many years, farming life for the Verburg family was just as it ought to be. Their registered Holstein operation in Athens, ON, was running smoothly, with the fifth generation starting to come on board. They were producing high quality milk in their two-row tiestall barn and developing deep cow families carrying their Roosburg prefix. Life was good. Then, in an instant, all that changed. At 12:45 am on January 27, 2013, the Verburgs received the devastating news that their tie-stall barn was on fire. Despite their best efforts, over 130 cows and calves were lost. For the Verburgs, it would change the way the family milked cows forever.

Cole and Ian returned home to the farm after attending Kemptville College in 2004 and 2008, respectively. Cole also works on contract basis for GEA Farm Technologies and assists with robot milking startups in Eastern Ontario and Quebec.

After recovering from the initial shock of the fire, the Verburgs toured many barns to see what they liked and what they wanted to build. “We received a lot of advice from people, but the best advice was to ‘close your eyes and picture yourself doing chores in a new barn,’” says Cole. It was important for them to picture what kind of a barn it was and how they would do their chores, he adds. After doing just that, they eventually made the decision to build a five row, freestall guided traffic barn with a GEA double box milking robot. The barn was modelled after the Kiestra family’s, near St. Marys, ON. A Bedding Master was also installed to provide the bedding from composted manure and bedding. “A new barn and milking system is nice, but the operation didn’t come cheaply”, says Cole. “Fire insurance is good, but it never covers everything. In his family’s case, insurance only covered about half of the costs of the new facility. After the fire, the community rallied around the Verburgs to show their support. Representatives from the farming community, members of the Tri-County show committee Cole is involved with, and residents of the town of Athens organized a benefit dinner and dance. Over 700 people attended and collectively raised an astounding $50,000 for the Verburgs.
by several top breeders in the area. “We were trying not to cry,” says Cole, referring to the embryos coming from Sunnylodge, Gillette, Stoneden, Maple-Ain, Velthuis, Hillview, Mark Moreland and Riverdown. “We are really looking forward to these embryos becoming a foundation herd of great cows.” Losing all of the milking herd and young calves in the fire meant that they would have to rebuild the herd, as well as the barn. When it came to buying replacement cows to fill the new barn, finances were a bit of a challenge. They were given $2,500 per cow lost by their insurance company. In some cases, they bought a few lesser value cows and spent a little bit more money to get a better cow. They purchased some cows from deep pedigreed families that caught their interest to begin the foundation of the new herd immediately. While the new barn was being built, heifers were calved out and milked by Cole’s sister and brother-in-law Dani and Geert. When construction was complete, those heifers came home as well as an additional 70 the Verburgs purchased from John and Dawn Wynand.
Cole feels there is nothing worse than buying an ugly cow. The Verburgs love a good cow with a great udder, who is tall and framey, with good depth of rib. John has always liked good cows and cow families, too. “I remember when we got our first excellent,” says Cole. “Dad was so excited!” The passion for breeding good cows At the benefit, the family was called to the stage and presented continued when, at age 12, Cole started choosing a lot of the bulls with an envelope. As they opened it, they realized it was a group and started breeding at age 16. Ian became interested in bull selection of registration papers for a package of embryos that were donated about three to four years ago and now Ian and Cole make joint decisions while keeping their dad in the loop.

favourites, rhyming off several generations of their pedigrees with ease. “We wanted to change the mentality of not being able to have show-quality cows in a free-stall,” says Cole. “We didn’t want to breed for smaller cows. We just love good cows.”
Since moving into the new barn on March 18, 2014, the Verburgs have seen a few challenges. A huge hurdle was making enough milk, which they initially thought was caused by the stress of so many new cows coming together in a new environment, but that wasn’t the case. Upon further investigation, they figured out the corn was full of mycotoxins. They solved that problem by feeding less corn and more energy to the cows. The herd is now averaging 34.5 litres per cow per day with three milkings per day. As cows and heifers are calving out for the first time since the change, they are starting to see many now hitting 50 litres by 30 days fresh. Currently they have three cows over 60 litres.

The Verburg’s breeding philosophy is to breed a well-balanced cow. They put high emphasis on conformation and feed for milk, but feel genomics have a place, too. “Genomics are a more reliable set of information than parent averages, but a genomic bull is still a test bull,” says Cole. The Verburgs have started rebuilding cow families, and consider themselves fortunate to still have several young cows in the herd carrying the Roosburg prefix. One such cow is Roosburg Magnetism Opposite GP-84-2YR. Her dam is a VG-88 Modest followed by a 2-E Champion and two more generations of Very Good after that. They have flushed her and look forward to the results. Another promising cow is Roosburg Seaver Jenyka, who recently classified VG-86-3YR. She completes eight generations of Very Good or Excellent and is the start of a line the Verburgs will be working with now. They have a Doorman daughter from her and she is pregnant to Bradnick.
The robot has eased the amount of time and labour spent on milking. Cole says they now use that time to better manage the herd and keep the bedding in the stalls clean and dry to reduce cases of mastitis. One of the Verburg’s goals is to have an open door policy to the community, whether it is the dairy community looking at the barn or robot, or urban people seeing a dairy farm for the first time. “Our open door policy is key to educating the public about dairy farming and where milk comes from,” says Cole. In May, the family hosted a Doors Open event where over 250 people visited with nine signing their name in the guest book from Toronto. A baby calf was born that day with many people seeing it happen. “We never say no to a tour,” says Cole.

Presented annually at the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON, the Curtis Clark Award goes to the dairy cattle exhibitor who possesses the ability, sportsmanship and character necessary to be respected by their fellow breeders and showmen. To be eligible for the award, the nominee must be an “active” showman, breeder or manager of any dairy cattle breed in Canada who is exhibiting cattle at major shows in this country. The person who wins the award “must be present” at the Royal Winter Fair to accept it. Nominees will be judged on their support of breed activities and ability to breed, manage, develop and exhibit dairy cattle. The Curtis Clark Award is sponsored by the Alberta Holstein Branch. Selection of the winner is made by former recipients of the award. This year’s winner will be announced on November 13th during the Royal’s National Holstein Show. National Holstein Convention 2015
Ontario Master Breeders Twelve Ontario Master Breeders were honoured at the gala banquet held earlier this spring in New Brunswick. Congratulations to Albadon (Teeswater), Deric (Ste. Century of Holstein Awards
National Young Adult Convention Youth from across the country participated in the National Young Adult Convention in conjunction with Holstein Canada’s National Convention. Three Century of Holstein award presentations were made to three Ontario families, recognized for 100 years of continuous membership with Holstein Canada. All of the awards were accepted from outgoing President Mario Perrault. 1. Although not able to make the convention, Robert Bauman of Floraholme Farms Ltd. was presented his award at a later date by Mary Poirier of the Ontario Holstein Branch.

On Saturday June 27, judge Pat Conroy of Angola, Indiana sorted through the 129 head presented to him, including 96 heifers. Prior to By Brad Eggink the conformation classes, two showmanship classes took place with The 2015 Ontario Spring Discovery had a well-attended show when 26 competitors. Judge Lorne Briscoe of Renfrew, ON chose Brett it came to the number of cattle exhibited in the Jersey and Holstein Stockdale to win the Junior class and Tamara Hamilton to win the shows as well as the number of spectators in the crowd. Established in 1980, the competition recognizes young people aged 25-35 who are actively involved in the operation of a dairy farm, who have demonstrated leadership and taken an active role in their communities. These talented winners will receive an all-expenses paid trip to World Dairy Expo in Madison, Wisconsin this fall. The Ontario Dairy Youth Award is funded through the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund, the Ontario Holstein Branch and Gaylea Foods as a supporting sponsor.

Ted milks 50-55 cows in Grey County, in partnership with his brother Allan and parents Blain and Joyce. The 450 acre tie-stall operation in Dundalk ON is home to a total of 135 head who are milked in a double 4 Herringbone Ted Clarke and family. Parlour. The farm has a current classification of 5 ME, 3 EX, 42 VG and 15 GP Holsteins. Blayjoy has bred two All Canadian/All American nominations, Blayjoy Jasper Mallory and Blayjoy Pundit Patrice. The heifers and dry cows are housed in a newer pack barn. Feed is grown entirely on 370 acres of owned land, with excess feed sold to market.
Adam and his wife, Amy, in partnership with his parents, Evan and Marilyn, milk 54 cows in a head to head bank barn in Campbellford Ontario. The 350 acre, 2-time Master Breeder operation in Adam, Amy, Evan and Marilyn Petherick Northumberland County is home to 41 Holsteins and 12 Jerseys, with a current classification of 8 EX, 34 VG, and 18 GP, with a current herd BCA of 253-263-257. The herd averages eight generations of VG or EX dams, with some animals as high as twelve generations. This success may be due to the breeding philosophy that Adam’s great grandfather used: “breed for type, feed for production”. Their breeding process requires bulls to have high-type numbers and at least average milk production, with close attention paid to health traits such as SCC and fertility.
Ted took over the breeding program in the fall of 2000, and breeds for type and longevity and feeds for milk. The farm uses half proven and half genomic bulls to accomplish this. Genomic bulls must be higher than DGV, be plus 15 for type and have plus deviations for fat and protein. He has also begun adding pedigreed cows from local Master Breeder herds to increase the quality of genetics in the herd, which has improved their herd classification average to 85.5 points. In addition to this, Ted has also built an addition on the barn bank with 23 tie-stalls for a total of 50 stalls on farm, changed stalls in the bank barn to wider single head rail stalls, increased quota holdings from 23 to 73 kilograms, built a new heifer barn, added a low line to the parlour, added a bigger bulk tank, built a second tower silo sized 20 x 80, bought two neighbouring farms, dropped age at first calving to 24-25 months and started using a modified live vaccine program. Ted has many goals for the future generations of the farm, and within the next five years there are plans to build new facilities for dry cows and springing heifers.
Many changes have occurred in recent years. A 50 X 120 foot tarp barn built in 2013 to house calves from age four days to one year old, an open front heifer barn built in 2005 which houses animals aged one year to three weeks prior to calving, along with numerous upgrades to the number and dimensions of the stalls to improve animal comfort and capacity. Since returning from university, with the support of his parents, Adam has initiated and overseen many changes to the farm, such as the dairy barn renovation completed in 2009, increasing the farm’s quota holdings by 50%, adopting herd management software on the farm, switching the herd to a TMR based ration, and investing in more labour saving automation like an automatic calf feeder. Though a lot of changes have taken place on the farm, Adam is always looking to the future and sees the possibility of a new robotic milking barn in the next ten years. This would help maximize labor efficiency, facilitate higher production goals and help to achieve the balanced breeding program of type on production and increased longevity.
Ted is a busy father of four children, aged 8, 7, 3, and 1 and enjoys judging 4-H competitions, volunteering with the Grey Milk Producer Committee and currently is the president of the Grey County Holstein Club. He is a strong believer of being willing to learn in the dairy industry, because “there are always areas in which you can improve.”
Adam enjoys volunteering his time with the Northumberland County Dairy Producer Committee, Campbellford Agricultural Society, is a member of the Purina Leader’s Council, and participates in programs and initiatives that not only benefit his farm, but the dairy community at large.

Dairy Sen$e hosts largest group to date and promotes management skills to young dairy farmers
The annual Dairy Sen$e workshop, held April 30 to May 2 welcomed 45 young people, the largest group of youth yet to the University of Guelph, who were ready to learn more about the business side of dairy farming.
T
Through a variety of sessions, farm tours and a detailed case study the delegates aged 18-25 become more prepared to become leading dairy producers. “Dairy Sen$e is an incredibly informative and unique conference,” says Lindsay Bebbington, Coordinator, Sen$e Programs, 4-H Ontario. “In three short days the delegates are able to interact with 20-plus professionals in the dairy industry and they are provided with information that they can take home and apply to their own farms. It is amazing to see the difference in their plans for their farms from when they arrive and then again when they leave.” The first day started off with Jason French from the Ontario Holstein Branch and Marianne Fallis from 4-H Ontario bringing greetings from their organizations as they worked together to co-manage the event. Heather Hargrave from Farm and Food Care Ontario was the first speaker of the day as she gave examples of “How to Make Your Point!” when delivering speeches. She allowed everyone to make some notes of what they would say in an elevator speech and then gave the opportunity for all delegates to stand up, introduce themselves and give one interesting fact about them. The first producer speaker of the workshop was Ben Loewith from Summitholm Farm and he addressed the group on his top management tips for high production. The group then broke up into four smaller groups to rotate through four speakers during the afternoon session. The speakers included

Jeff Williamson from FCC speaking on Business Plans, David Rose of CIBC on Interpreting Financial Statements, Carolyn Lee from AgCareers.com on Building a Good On-Farm Team and Chris Buchner of Elmwold Farms on Benchmarking Your Herd. After supper that evening, David Rose lead the introduction into the Case Studies part of the workshop where financial information from the AgriTel benchmarking program was explained. There are four farms (owners unknown) with extensive information that needed to be analysed by the groups of four and one farm was to have recommendations regarding improvement to the operation. The groups worked hard that evening to prepare themselves for the presentation that would occur on the Saturday morning. The second day always is the most enjoyable for the delegates as they were able to visit two well-managed farms and see how they organize all the activities on their operation. The first farm was the home of Mark and Josh Ireland at Albadon Farms at Teeswater. The Irelands have seen great success in receiving the Top Management Award from DHI for Ontario and Western Canada and this year winning Holstein Canada’s top award, the Master Breeder shield. The delegates were glued to every word that Josh said about their farm as they toured the large facility where they currently milk 170 cows. Speakers held positions at three different locations around the farm with Mark Carson from EastGen speaking on Reproductive Performance, Vic Daniel on the Value of Hoof Trimming and Josh Ireland giving details on their own Protocols for Calves and Heifers.

Cameron Stockdale’s competitive nature and passion for the dairy industry have led him to achieve the success that many youth only dream of. His hard work and determination to be successful in the show ring paid off when he was named Reserve Grand Champion Showman at the Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic in 2014. He also placed 4th in the Junior Yearling class with Vanderway Snowin L Red. As well, he was Reserve Grand Champion Showman and Overall Champion at EastGen Challenge East and Grand Champion Showman at his achievement day. To achieve success in the show ring, Cameron works with his 4-H project two to three times a week for at least one hour, training her to dance in the show ring. Cameron says “Don’t give up. It doesn’t matter where you stand in the line at a show, always keep trying. It takes a lot of practice.” At an early age, Cameron knew he wanted to pursue a career in the dairy industry. “It’s a lifestyle that allows you to be your own boss, set your own hours and work with what I love – cows,” says Cameron. “I look forward to the future of dairy farming because I think there will be many changes in the next fifteen years and it will be interesting to see the outcome.”
Farms in Norwood, ON. Embrdale Farms has been in the family since 1943 and Cameron will be the 4th generation to operate the farm that milks 65 cows three times a day in a tie-stall operation. On the farm, Cameron helps with cropping, morning milkings and works with the showstring. Cameron spends approximately 60 per cent of the time on the road, working and fitting at shows and sales across Ontario and Quebec. He credits Barclay Phoenix for introducing him to the show industry and getting him started. Cameron attended the Holstein Convention that was hosted in Belleville a few years ago, which is where Barclay asked him “when are you going to start working for me,” and Cameron hasn’t looked back. Cameron has learned a lot about caring for show animals and cow management by working for some of the best cow people in the industry. They have provided him with different insights that he can apply on the home farm. By gaining hands-on industry experience, Cameron has set himself up to be very successful in the dairy industry. He completed a co-op placement in high school working for Rob Heffernan and continued to work there for two years. Cameron thanks Heffernan for teaching him the skills to become a good fitter and how to prepare heifers for the show ring. He also often helps the Troup family of Vale-O-Skene Holsteins at shows. Recently, he was a member of the sale crew for both the Willdina and Trent Valley Herd Dispersals.
Cameron has been a 4-H member since the age of 10 and has been continually selected to be a part of his county’s 4-H Dairy Classic team since he was eligible to attend. He has taken advantage of the opportunities 4-H offers and attended Youth Adventure Camp, Provincial Leadership Camp and Future Leaders in Action. Scholarship Winners Announced
The Ontario Dairy Joint Breeds Committee is excited to announce the recipients of their fourth annual Future Leaders Scholarship. These are given to young people in the agricultural industry for their involvement, accomplishments and leadership achievements. The winners have begun to take on positions of leadership within various organizations and demonstrated an outstanding commitment and shown potential for future achievement. These future leaders have focused their post-secondary education in the agricultural field as well as actively participate in community activities where they have taken on a leadership role. Derek Van De Walle & Ava Doner are the winners of the $1000 scholarships.
Derek Van De Walle is from St. Mary’s and is currently enrolled in the Bachelor of Science in Agriculture program at University of Guelph, majoring in Animal Science. He has been an active member in the Kirkton Dairy 4-H Club since the age of 10, and has continued to lead in both community activities and university sports teams. Derek is the 2018 Graduating Class representative for the Student Federation of the Ontario Agriculture College (OAC) for 2014-15 and 2015-16. Derek has also become an avid breeder since taking on the Vandeholm prefix. He has won 1st place in the 2014 Perth Breeder’s Cup. Derek owns a dozen purebred Holsteins, housed at Avonbank Holsteins where he has worked for 5 years. Derek plans on going to the Ontario Veterinary College to become a bovine veterinarian after completing University.

Ava plans on combining her two passions, the Dairy industry and teaching, after she finishes her Bachelor of Science in Agriculture at the University of Guelph. She is aspiring to be a communications representative for an agriculture company and plans on visiting schools teaching the importance of agriculture. Her academics, humanitarianism and commitment to extra-curriculars have definitely contributed to Ava becoming the well-rounded individual she is today.

Holstein Canada’s New Herd Enrollment Program Mulbrook Holsteins, Moorefield, ON

Despite tragedy, Mulbrook Holsteins continues their family tradition of dairy farming since 1961 by expanding and planning for the future of their farm Dairy farming isn’t new for the Mulder family of Moorefield, Ontario, as their roots in agriculture start long before they were in Canada. The family originates from Holland, where Harry Mulder’s parents immigrated from and bought the farm in 1961 to expand their dairy business. Harry and his wife Margaret bought the operation in 1990 from his parents, and raised their two sons and four daughters on the 700 acre, 100 cow farm, with another 400 acres rented. The Mulder farm is truly a family operation, with all the fieldwork and day-to-day work done by the family, primarily Harry Sr. and his sons Harry Jr. and Dave. Before their daughters went to school, they all helped in the barn as well. Margaret still hand feeds the calves until seven to nine months old when they are moved into the heifer barn. The family works closely with ABS Genetics and the farm’s herd heath expert Kelly Barratt, a veterinarian from Heartland Animal Hospital Vet in Listowel who visits the farm every two weeks. Not only do they have a passion for their cows, but they also do field work and custom work like bailing and wrapping hay, planting and spraying. Up until November 30, 2002 Harry Sr. found pride in registering his purebred herd, until a devastating fire burned the Mulder’s milking barn to the ground. The family was able to save all the milking cows and heifers thanks to the heroic actions of Harry’s son, Dave, who opened the doors for the cows to escape, however 40 calves were lost in total. The Mulders moved their milking cows to local farms and continued milking for nine months until their new barn was completed in August 2003. Because of this tragedy and the BSE outbreak, Harry Sr. discontinued registering and classifying his herd. That is, until two years ago. Harry Jr. and his brother Dave will soon begin the succession process of the farm and started reregistering their herd. Harry Jr. lists benefits like “improving genetics, age verification, and traceability for the herd” as the main

Although they do not classify their cows currently, Harry Jr.’s goal is to see all their cows classified and registered in the near future to provide streamlined back-up records of herd data. There are big changes in the future for Mulbrook Holsteins, and expansion is underway. At the time of this interview the Mulders were in the process of building a new house, a new 12 x 100 manure storage tank, and have plans for a heifer barn with a solar roof. Harry Sr. sees this heifer barn as an investment for the future, as they will be able to house their own heifers and expand their numbers right on their own farm. They want to build cow families that are strong in their feet and legs, who produce milk and calve easily and have good longevity. His sons plan to buy more quota and improve milk production and genetics with the heifer barn investment and by classifying and registering their herd with Holstein Canada. The Mulders hope to continue the family tradition of dairy farming with the next generation.

A new excellent cow or a very good two-year-old is a breeding accomplishment. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. From March 2015 through to the end of May 2015, there were 526 1st time Excellent cows and 269 Very Good two-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. Dairy Cattle Evaluation Clinics
Congratulations to Ian and Jen Fraser on the birth of their son Reid. He arrived on April 10th weighing 7 lbs. 10oz. Ian is the current president of the Ontario Holstein Branch board of directors.
Two of three Dairy Cattle Evaluation Clinics were held in May and June. East-Central’s was hosted at the Napanee Fairgrounds and Western/West-Central was hosted at Bobmur Farms. A huge THANK YOU to all those involved in putting these on. Over 150 attended the events. The Eastern Ontario Clinic will be held on July 15 at the Vankleek Hill Fairgrounds.
Save the Date The 2016 Ontario Holstein Branch Annual General Meeting will be held in Cornwall at the Best Western on February 23-24, 2016. Mark your calendars and stay tuned for more information on the farm tours and the AGM.

She was Junior Champion at the Middlesex County Show as a Senior Heifer and a Senior Yearling and Honorable Mention as a Senior 3-year-old. 6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? We are proud that we are a 3-time Master Breeder herd, classified 94% VG or EX, entirely homebred, Leucosis and Johnes negative herd. Our current 305 day milk value is $9,200. 7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be? WE NEED A NEW LARGER BARN! We have a lot of cattle in a small area and the last two winters have been less than desirable to put it politely. Construction is planned to start next spring on a new barn. 8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why? We would have Bosdale Gold Luster VG-89-2-YR in our barn. She is an exceptional individual with a tremendous cow family behind her. In the future she will achieve great accomplishments both in the show ring and through her offspring. 9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out? Be honest, work hard and ask questions. You cannot make money using bulls that are minus for fat and protein as we are paid on components. Breeding a herd of high component cows is very profitable.
Curtis, Vanda & Glen McNeil 1. What is your family’s history with Holsteins? Heather Holme Holsteins was established by Cliff and Evelyn McNeil in 1933. They became members of Holstein Canada in 1950 earning their first Master Breeder Shield in 1980. The farm was purchased by Glen, Vanda, Katie and Curtis who received Master Breeder Shields in 1996 & 2010. Recently the farm became incorporated with Glen, Vanda and Curtis being partners in the business. 2. What are your breeding goals? Our philosophy is to “Breed the kind of cow dairymen like to milk world wide”. 10. How do you use genomic information in your herd and what are your thoughts on the future of genomics? Genomics are a great tool if used correctly and for how they were intended to be used. The accuracy of genomics are still a prediction and they do not have the reliability of a daughter proven sire. 11. How many cows do you flush each year? How do you market your embryos that are for sale? We generally flush two to three cows per month. We market them through Facebook, Twitter, our website, hard copy and brochures. By far the best marketing is having visitors come to visit our farm. 12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do you value most? Everyone wants consistent reliable genetics. Our philosophy is “Breeding the kind dairymen like to milk world wide.” Dairymen want genetics that are high in conformation and are profitable.
