editor’s note

W

THANK YOU VOLUNTEERS! We are now well into what has been a lovely fall season. The leaves have changed colours and the many fall fairs that happen across the province have wrapped up. A lot of these fairs play host to our County Holstein and 4-H shows. These events would not take place if it wasn’t for the volunteers who tirelessly give their time serving on fair and show committees, help with set-up and take-down and as 4-H leaders to name a few. Many people take on leadership roles or simply work quietly in the background making sure the work gets done. I personally give up a lot of my free time volunteering, including being a 4-H calf club leader and director on the Embro Fair Board. I do this because I love it and feel it is important to give back to the community that raised me, but it really feels good when I receive a text or an email thanking me for my work. As you read through this issue of The Link, you will find reports and summaries of the Junior Shows, the Inter-County 4-H Judging Competition and County and Regional Holstein Shows. I encourage you to not only take in the show winners, but think about the countless volunteer hours that were spent organizing these events. Next time you are at an event, I hope you will say ‘thank you’ to the volunteers who helped put it on, they will truly appreciate it. Sincerely, Julie McIntosh, Interim Link Editor thelink@ontario.holstein.ca

general mana ger’s messa ge The dairy industry is a great place with many opportunities from grassroots organizations to working within our industry partner organizations. Participation in our programs is very high compared to our friends south of the boarder and that is because you see value in our services and programs as a united group. Our Breed Association membership is strong both nationally and provincially. Having spent the past 25 years in different industry positions, I have always had a common focus and that is you, our producers. Having grown up on a dairy and cash crop farm in Goderich Township (Huron County), I can appreciate your lifestyle. After a short return to the family farm after graduating from the University of Guelph (OAC 89A), the farm was sold and I started my career in this industry with United Breeders. Back in that time there were questions about our quota system and the potential impact free-trade talks would have on the system. In 25 years we’ve seen different trade talks and here we are again with TPP threatening our supply management system. We have strong programs that provide information to assist you with the trade threats. As margins get tighter on your farms, we need to utilize information to raise the most efficient milk producing Holstein possible. I’ve spent many years working with data relating to dairy production and my passion is to assist with interpreting this information with dairy producers. I would like to thank you for the opportunity to be your General Manger and WestCentral field representative for Ontario Holsteins. You have a strong organization and I look forward to working with you to keep it that way! Regards,

Peter Brand, General Manager, Ontario Holstein Branch

Longtime Club Secretaries THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND ANY COMMITTEE, CLUB, BOARD OR OFFICE IS THE SECRETARY. Secretaries are the people who make sure things get done. They are the point people for fielding questions, they are the go to people for organizing events and they are the communication contact for all things related to their business. Holstein Club Secretaries are no exception.

Holstein Breeders Inducted into the Quinte Agricultural Wall of Fame On September 20th, 2015, several Holstein breeders were inducted into the Quinte Agricultural Hall of Fame; Lee Dunk of Dunco Holsteins and Gene and Helen Brahaney of Yenaharb Holsteins both of Northumberland County, Ted Ray of Ralanes Holsteins and Wilma and the late Carman Huffman of Huffmandale Holsteins of Hastings County and J. Donald Baxter of Brooknoll Holsteins from Prince Edward County.

In 2015 we had four County Holstein Club Secretaries that we recognized for their years of service to their local Holstein Club. They devote countless hours of their personal time to make sure events run smoothly and club business is taken care of. We thank the following for their service to their respective Holstein Clubs and ultimately the Ontario Holstein Branch.

The Winger Family of

By Julie McIntosh

A passion for cows and love of family

T

On a county highway in rural Haldimand County, with windmills off in the distance and flat cropland all around lies Keylas Holsteins, owned by the Winger family of Cayuga. Doug and Diane Winger got started in the Holstein business back in 1976 when they purchased Doug’s father’s 10 purebred Holsteins and quota and immediately began growing Keylas Holsteins. To make the finances work in the early years with high interest rates, and to allow for expansion, Doug had an off-farm job doing construction and Diane worked at the bank. Doug and Diane were married in 1973 and had three girls, Lori, Jana and Julie. All three were involved in the farm and 4-H over the years, but it was Lori who had the true love for the cows and there was no question that she would be involved and make dairy farming her career. Today, the family milks about 75 cows in their tie-stall operation. Lori works full-time on the farm, doing all of the milking and making the breeding decisions. Doug looks after feeding and deals (L to R) Lori, Diane and Doug Winger. with the fresh cows. The next weekend after graduation she moved home and started her career milking cows. “I had two loves, “Mom would go back to school shopping with Jana and Julie and farming and sports,” says Lori. “By the time I was 18, I wanted to I would want to go to the barn,” laughs Lori. “Grandpa died when try something different, which led me to Western. Matt and Julie now work full-time with their own cash crop and trucking business. Matt, Julie, Doug, Diane and Lori work together and have helped each build their businesses. Matt makes many of the cropping decisions at Keylas and helps with filling silos, bunks and haying. He also relief milks as needed. Lori and Doug haul wagons and run the batch grain dryer for Matt during harvest, trading labour. Jana and her husband Jason own and operate a Home Hardware store. Jason also works and is a part owner with his father in their family construction business. Any new buildings at Keylas are built by them.

and a girl. They can often be found helping Grandpa, Grandma or Aunt Lori and as soon as each of them are old enough, start showing calves. Lori loves having her nieces and nephews help her so much she purchased a camping trailer that is kept at the barn. She and the kids sleep in when they are having a sleepover and they know to come into the barn when they wake up. (Lori and Doug and Diane’s homes are not at the dairy barn location.)

Stardust classified VG-87 and EX, 1 VG-87 by Hanoverhill Raider, a VG-87 Carnation Counselor, an EX Comestar Leader and a VG88 by Hanoverhill Lincoln. “She was a prolific cow,” says Doug. “She crossed well with a variety of sires.”

4-H played a big role in the girls’ youth, participating in both dairy and other projects. Lori and Julie were selected to represent Haldimand County at the Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic at the Royal many times and Jana once. “We have a lot of good memories and friends from 4-H,” says Lori. “At the Classic, we won the stable competition several times. We didn’t all have calves that would win, but we just kept sweeping and packing the pack.”

The Wingers annually flush one to two of their better cows and implant the embryos as a tool to improve the herd. They have also sold some at their Holstein club sale.

The other cow was Willowholme Beulah VG-87 7* by Hanoverhill Starbuck. Doug and his son-in-law Matt’s dad, Grant Richardson bought her at a Tavistock sale in 1990. She was out of Howard “The kids are always here. We get their baggies filled with snacks Elliot’s Willowholme Sheik Nadine VG-85 cow, the only one he and throw them in the tractor with us or they come to the barn,” ever sold. She was flushed many times and was 14 before she left the herd, completing 8 lactations. Beulah had 6 VG and 9 GP daughters. says Lori.

The Wingers have always bred for type in their herd with plus numbers for production. More recently they have started to look more at health traits, somatic cell, fat and production in general. Bulls used in the last few years include Atwood, Aftershock, Jett Air and Fever. They have now moved on to using Brewmaster Doorman, High Octane, Sid and Dempsey.

Keylas Skyline Shadow EX-91-4E, who descends from Keylas Astro J Stacy has flushed really well in recent years producing 3 EX, 6 VG and 15 GP daughters by many different sires. The current classification of the herd is 4 ME, 6 EX, 50 VG and 44 GP. The Wingers annually exhibit some cows at the Haldimand-Norfolk Holstein Show held at the Norfolk County Fair in October. It is a family affair with many of the grandchildren showing the calves they have trained. A few cows and older calves are also shown. In 2014, they had Junior Champion with Keylas Sid Berla and Honourable Mention Grand Champion with Keylas Windbrook Nova. For 2015, the results included winning four calf classes and Junior Breeders’ Herd. They also won a couple cow classes. The Keylas prefix has become a popular name in the showring this past summer with the success of Keylas Sid Roxanna VG-87-2YR, who was the Intermediate Champion and Reserve Grand Champion at the Ontario Summer Show (OSS). “We thought she was something special so we asked Rob Eby to come and see her,” says Doug. “We sold Rob and Julie Eby half interest in her and she went to their farm to get ready for the shows in 2014. They have the talent and the eye. They are the reason she is what she is.”

They have used some genomic bulls and continue to use them a bit, but it isn’t the biggest key in sire selection. Some sexed McCutchen and Superpower semen was used and the first batch of heifer calves are now on the ground. Lori prefers to use proven sires on the farm. They have not tested their own animals for genomics. “More and The night before the OSS, Roxanna was sold to Quality Holsteins, more we are getting used to the idea of genomics,” says Lori. “We Beckridge Holsteins and Agriber Societa Agricola Srl of Italy. “This will see where it goes.” is something new, to have a cow bred by us going to Madison. to see Roxanna show and she placed seventh. Doug visited Madison in 2014 and loved it, so had made plans to attend in 2015. “Madison and the Royal are the only places Dad likes to go,” jokes Lori. “Cows are his interest, besides the Blue Jays.” The Keylas herd is milked two times per day in the head to head tiestall barn. Doug laughs when he says head to head as they have built on to the old barn over the years, with the most recent in 2008 where they added 18 more stalls, redid the front of the barn and added a new milk house and office. The cows are fed a TMR three times a day of corn silage, haylage, a complete pellet and chopped dry hay or straw. All of the feed except the pellet is grown on the 650 acres that they own and rent. In addition to the various additions to the main dairy barn over the years, the Wingers built bunkers for corn silage which has allowed for more feed storage. They recently renovated an old implement shed to become a calf barn. The calves were housed in individual hutches outside, but it got to be too much for Diane feeding them, especially in the winter. The shed was renovated by putting in a cement floor and turkey curtains on the walls for ventilation. The calves are housed in individual pens that can be cleaned out with a tractor. The calf barn includes an insulated warm room for mixing milk replacer. They have had great results with this barn as calves are now being weaned at 2.5 months vs. three. After weaning, the calves are placed into a group pen in the calf barn for another month or two before going to the heifer barn. “This is a big improvement for the heifers,” says Diane. “They don’t go backwards after moving to the heifer barn. Being able to drop the weaning age is worth the investment too.”

“Dad always used to say get the chores done and go play ball.” Lori Winger

Not in the very near future, but something that could happen one day, is a new dairy barn with robots to help with labour. “As for advice, for people starting out with dairy farming, they should always keep an open mind,” Lori. “We have always went on bus trips and car tours to see other farming operations. We always pick up helpful tips, big and small that we can incorporate into our own day to day work.” Although the Wingers are kept busy on the dairy farm, they do manage to get away and have fun. Lori has always played competitive fastball. “Dad always used to say get the chores done and go play ball,” says Lori. She continues to play now and enjoys hockey, bowling and other sports. Doug and Diane always get away to the Royal Winter Fair for a few days each November to watch the National Holstein Show. They also really enjoy spending time with their six grandchildren who are always visiting the farm and try to get to other county Holstein shows.

“We want to continually improve growing better heifers,” says Lori. The love of cows that Doug, Diane and Lori have is evident as they “A good heifer in the first place gets bred earlier and into the milking talk about their farm and herd and this will continue to propel them forward in the dairy industry. Lori sums it up succinctly, “It’s all row sooner. Older calving heifers tend to have problems.” we ever thought about doing. You have to have the passion. It’s too Looking to the future, Doug says if the right farm came up for sale much work to not have the passion.” they would look at buying it to continue to expand their land base.

CountyShow Report ontario’s

Don’t wait for the people to come to see your cow, take the cow to the people! Your local county show is not only a great socializing and networking event, but it is also a great marketing opportunity for your herd. Whether you take a string of 20 or just one animal, your farm name gets put on the map and just maybe, the next time someone is looking for a show or sale animal, they will turn up at YOUR barn door. 2015 was another successful year for the county shows across Ontario. Some were up in numbers, some were a bit down, but all in all, the shows were well attended by exhibitors and spectators alike. A lot of work goes into a Holstein show before, during and even after the event itself. Congratulations to all of the breeders and exhibitors of the many outstanding cattle shown at the 29 county shows across Ontario this year!

OntarioSummerShow 2015

By Adrian Vander Wielen

The 19th annual Ontario Summer Show was judged by Carl Phoenix of Cannington, ON in the coverall show ring at Lindsay Central Exhibition grounds on a beautiful summer’s day, with 192 head being evaluated. Carl and his associate and ring man Joel Phoenix both commented on the honour and privilege to judge the well presented high quality cattle on display. This year’s Grand Champion went to the winning four-year-old and High BCA cow Mystique Goldwyn Boreale owned by Ferme Blondin. Premier Breeder banners were won by Kingsway Farms. Premier Junior Exhibitor was won by Crovalley and Premier Exhibitor by Ferme Blondin. One of the constant strengths of the success of the show is the energy and enthusiasm provided by the East-Central district 4-H members as they compete in showmanship and clipping competitions. Winning Championship Showmanship honours went to top Senior Showperson Vanessa Crowley, Reserve to the Intermediate Showmanship class winner Brett Stockdale and Honourable Mention to the second place Senior Dan Werry. The other class winners were Abby Reed and Taylor Vander Meulen. Trent Valley Gold Chip Abra 6 shown by Jessica Brown was selected as Champion 4-H Heifer followed by second place Senior Heifer Kingsway Doorman Ace for Matt Forestell. Honourable Mention was earned by Vanessa Crowley on Crovalley Tnt Ammo. Earning the Champion Clipper award was Dan Werry followed Evan Stanley, Kandice Coates and Conner Sikma. The Ontario Summer Show continues to be recognized as one of the premier shows in Canada. This is a result in large part due to the efforts of a hard working show committee and the great support of area sponsors. The 2016 show is scheduled by for July 22nd and we look forward to your participation.

World Dairy Expo 2015

Another year of the World Dairy Expo (WDE) in Madison, WI has come and gone and the clock now starts ticking towards the 50th anniversary of the WDE. A visit to WDE this year provided the opportunity for dairy farmers from across the globe to see almost 2500 head of cattle from the U.S. and Canada compete for top honors in seven breed shows. Ontario Holstein breeders and youth competed at WDE and strongly represented the province.

I

The Senior Showmanship top ten finishers at WDE. Six of the 10 were from Ontario including, Emma Farlinger placing 3rd (4th from left) Chris Deklein placing 4th (5th from left), Ava Doner placing 5th (6th from left), Deanna Ringelberg placing 7th (8th from left), Jocelyn Forster placing 8th (9th from left) and Derek Van De Walle placing 10th (3rd from right). Photo: Linda Derber

In July, the Inter-County 4-H Dairy Judging Competition took place in Metcalfe, ON and the four top seniors were selected to make up the Ontario 4-H Dairy Judging Team. Connor Sikma, Deanna Ringelberg, Madison Dyment and Derek Van de Walle were selected, however Conner Sikma was unable to attend. Chris Deklein, the next highest competitor attended in his place. The team was capably coached by Murray Reissner and Bert Stewart. Because this is a national competition, the Ontario team placings are not announced at the banquet; however the organizing committee does give a set of scores and placings to the team. After a long day of judging, the Ontario team was pleased to find out they had placed 12th. WDE also hosts a showmanship competition that divides up the Junior, Intermediate and Senior categories into three rings with three different judges. This competition takes place on the Thursday evening of the WDE week where a total of 306 competitors participated. Serving as judges this year were Brian Behnke from Albany, WI, Junior division; Kathy Beerwort of Canton De Hatley, QC, Intermediate division and Brian Carscadden of Guelph, ON, Senior division. Madison Dyment of Burgessville won the Intermediate showmanship. The Senior division represented Ontario well with six of the top ten finishers, including Emma Farlinger of Morrisburg placing 3rd, Chris Deklein of Mossley in 4th, Ava Doner of Courtice in 5th, Deanna Ringelberg of Troy in 7th, Jocelyn Forster of Lynden placing 8th and Derek Van De Walle of St. Marys placing 10th.

The Red and White Show was judged by Pat Conroy of Angola, IN. and associate judge JoĂŤl Lepage of Amqui, QC. Together they placed 236 animals in total. Ontario was well represented with the Junior Champion and first Fall Yearling, Earincliffe Redliner Sarah Red. She was bred by Scott Brethett of Tottenham, but now owned by C&B J Hill, C&S Umbel and M&S Hawbaker of the U.S. Other Ontario bred animals placing at the top of the class were Kawartha Absolute Teaghan-Red (3rd Spring Yearling), Legend-Maker Larson GizzelRed (6th Spring Yearling), Sunnylodge Reali Laurel-Red (3rd Junior 2-Year-Old), Valleyriver Secure Ericka (4th Four-Year-Old), Lochdale Shaquille Missy-Red (4th 5-Year-Old), and Harvue Contender BrittaRed (5th 5-Year-Old). Ontario owned cows that placed near the top of the class include Blondin Destry Sally-Red (6th 4-Year-Old), owned by Oscar Dupasquier and Ferme Blondin and Lookout Advent Flicka (2nd Aged Cow), owned by G. Coughlin Jr of Peterborough and C& J Hill and St. Jacobs of the U.S. The highlight of WDE for many Holstein breeders is the International Holstein Show held on the Friday and Saturday of the event. Judge Nathan Thomas of Cable, OH and associate judge Eddie Bue of Fithian, IL judged 387 animals including many Ontario genetics for their Ontario or American owners. Starting off in the Spring Heifer class, Crovalley TNT Ammo placed 7th for Crovalley Holsteins of Hastings. Ontario-bred Claircrest Sid Deli won the Winter Heifer class for her American owners. College studying Farm Management and Technology where he studies all aspects of agriculture from livestock management practices, crops, soils, and machinery to managing a successful farm operation or farm business. He has been involved on his home farm his entire life, from milking to record-keeping of all aspects of the family business. Derek’s goals include taking over management of his home farm in partnership with his older brother and to expand the farm to become more profitable and efficient with new milking barn facilities.

Liam is currently enrolled at the University of Guelph-Ridgetown Campus in the Associate Diploma of Agriculture Program. He helps with various tasks on-farm, including crops and also works for neighboring farms as a relief milker and driving tractor in crop season. Recently, he has expressed interest in achieving his Insemination Course and applying to become an apprentice in diesel mechanics, both skills that will be useful in his future. Liam’s future goal is to eventually become a partial or sole owner of his family dairy operation.

Deanna is currently working towards a Bachelor of Commerce in Food and Agriculture at the University of Guelph. She is keenly involved in her family’s dairy operation, does relief milking at local dairy farms and works for Sylvite Agri Services Ltd. as a crop scout. After graduation she would like to use the knowledge she has garnered through her program to help bridge the education gap between consumers and producers.

Derek is enrolled in his second year of the Bachelor of Business and Commerce in Food and Agricultural Business program at the University of Guelph. He plays an active role in the University of Guelph Dairy Science Club while at school and is also a member of the Future Dairy Leaders Club in Oxford County. He has been working on his family farm since childhood and has saved up to purchase six of his own cattle. His goal is to graduate from the University of Guelph and apply what he learned to owning and managing his own dairy farm.

MICHAEL JENKINS, Belmont

JUSTIN VELTHUIS, Ottawa

VANESSA CROWLEY, Hastings

SHAELYN PRINS, Corbyville

Michael is going into his second year at the University of Guelph-Ridgetown Campus in the Associate Diploma of Agriculture Program. He has actively been involved on his family’s farm in Belmont his whole life, and as he has aged, he has gained more and more responsibility on the farm. Michael’s future goal is to become the fifth generation to farm on the same land, keep developing their purebred Holstein herd and earn another Master Breeder Shield to their farm.

Justin is currently enrolled at the University of Guelph-Ridgetown Campus in the Associate Diploma of Agriculture Program. He has worked on his family farm, Riverdown Holsteins his entire life and is involved in many aspects. He hopes to develop deepfamilied marketable animals and that this breeding strategy will lead to the farm’s second Master Breeder Shield.

Vanessa is studying Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics in the Bachelor of Science in the Food and Agricultural Business program at the University of Guelph. Being involved in her family farm has allowed Vanessa the opportunity to be involved in many aspects of the operation and she takes great pride in ensuring the facilities are clean when visitors come and see the Crovalley herd. Her goal is to become an agricultural financial consultant for a financial institution in the future.

Shaelyn attends the University of Guelph in the Animal Science program with a minor in Business Administration. Shaelyn recently took an insemination course and has begun to breed the cows and make all the breeding decisions on her family farm. She has also recently taken interest in feeding and TMR mixing for the cattle to improve the herd. Upon graduation, she wants to own her own dairy farm where she can improve the herd’s health, production and type.

2015 Inter-County 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Competition de Walle of Perth. They were among the top winners of the day and will travel to Madison for 10 days in October with Bert Stewart and Murray Reissner as coaches. (Conner Sikma was not able to attend World Dairy Expo, so Chris Deklein of Middlesex attended in his place).

Despite a rainy day, 80 junior and senior 4-H members from across the province participated in the 26th Annual Inter-County Judging Competition on July 30 at the Metcalfe Fairgrounds in Metcalfe, ON.

Ava Doner was named High Individual winner in the senior category. She also won the High Reasons, High Other Breeds and was Runner-Up for High Senior Quiz. High Individual RunnerUp was won by Jenna Elliott of Lambton.

Participants began the day writing a quiz based on material from the “You Be The Judge” manual, which all young judges use to hone their skills. After completing the 50-point quiz, the 4-Her’s evaluated three classes of Holsteins, three classes of Jerseys, two classes of Ayrshires and one class of Brown Swiss.

Winning High Senior Team and Coach this year was the Lambton County team made up of Michelle Slaughter and Jenna Elliott, coached by High Junior Individual Brent Sayles with sponsor Phyllis MacMaster. Brian Slaughter. The Runner-up High Team was made up of Josh Karn and Lars Zeldenrijk of Oxford. They were coached by Dean Karn.

Chairman Murray Reissner thanked the sponsors and volunteers for the successful day. Regis Tardif of John Deere, the event’s premier sponsor, congratulated all participants and wished the winning team well in Madison.

The junior division saw many well-rounded participants this year. High Individual was won by Brent Sayles of Brant, and the High Individual Runner-Up was Mikayla Ringelberg of Wentworth. This year’s High Team in the junior division was won by Emma Roszell and Chloe Grabell of Niagara South and coached by Brenda Roszell. The Runner-up junior team was won by Wentworth County with Mikayla Ringelberg and Jack Melia making up the team, coached by Janet Ringelberg. High Senior Individual Ava Doner with sponsor Bert Stewart. With the long distance for many 4-H members to travel from the west end of the province to the east end, a bus was rented to transport about 30 members and chaperones to the event. A huge thank you to the sponsors who stepped forward to make this possible; the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund, Scotiabank, Norwell Dairy Systems Ltd., Sparlings, Floradale Feed Mill, Main Street Animal Hospital, Oxford County Holstein Club, Grand Valley Fortifiers and Oxford Bovine Veterinarians.

The following winners were to represent Ontario at the World Dairy Expo where they would compete in the National 4-H Dairy Cattle Judging Contest; Connor Sikma of Durham East, Deanna Ringelberg of Wentworth, Madison Dyment of Brant and Derek Van

Without the dedication and support of the Ontario Holstein Branch and premier sponsor John Deere as well as the many other sponsors, committee members and volunteers, the InterCounty Cattle Judging Competition would not be possible. They made the event run smoothly.

A fabulous chicken dinner was enjoyed by all participants, volunteers and sponsors as the group looked forward to the announcement of the four participants who had won the 10-day all-expenses-paid trip to Madison, Wisconsin to attend World Dairy Expo.

Leadership and practice

BY CELESTE COOK

Sisters Kyleigh and Caitlin Jampen’s leadership skills and “practice makes perfect” work ethic have opened up doors of opportunity both in 4-H and high school. encourages young adults to make a difference in their community.

Along with parents, Andreas and Angela and younger siblings Patrick and Riley, Kyleigh and Caitlin operate Mountain Ridge Holsteins in Hallville, Ontario. As a family, they milk 40 registered purebred Holsteins in a tie-stall operation. Both Kyleigh and Caitlin help with daily chores on the farm; Kyleigh feeds the older heifers and steps in to complete extra chores when her parents are busy doing fieldwork. Caitlin feeds the young heifers and calves on milk.

“Put yourself out there and get involved, stand up for what you believe in,” says Kyleigh. “Any positive difference is a big difference.” Kyleigh’s determination to be the best person she can be also pertains to 4-H and the dairy industry. She is a youth leader for the second consecutive year for the Dundas Central Elite 4-H club. Kyleigh enjoys taking time out of her day helping fellow 4-H members improve their showmanship skills.

Both Kyleigh and Caitlin, are very involved in their 4-H community and St. Michael Catholic High School. They have joined several different 4-H clubs and hold executive positions within the clubs and high school extracurriculars. They both also play on their high school rugby team. In addition, they have been members of several other 4-H clubs in their region completing projects such as pizza, sports, woodworking, scrapbooking and apple.

Kyleigh owns a couple calves under her own prefix, District 12. She decided to call her prefix after one of her favourite movies, The Hunger Games. In the movie, District 12 is the home district of the main character, who symbolizes leadership and the continued determination to bring equality to their nation. She owns Serenityhill Sid Rebeca “aka Babe” as Kyleigh calls her under her prefix. Rebeca was purchased at the Cherry Crest dispersal in 2012. Showing Rebeca was her most memorable moment in 4-H so far as she consistently did well in showmanship and conformation. She enjoyed showing an animal that she could call her own.

Kyleigh and Caitlin both comment that their friendly sibling rivalry can be attributed to their success in the 4-H show ring. At just 11 months apart, they are constantly competing directly against each other, trying to come (L to R): Caitlin and Kyleigh Jampen. out on top and represent the Jampen family well. Kyleigh’s passion for agricultural education and politics is very evident. Kyleigh Jampen Kyleigh is extremely involved within her high school. She is currently the student council president, a member of the student senate and a past president of the athletic council. Kyleigh’s involvement allows her to be instrumental in making high school an enjoyable and fun environment for her fellow students, helping to run and organize events throughout the year.

Caitlin Jampen

Caitlin is also very involved within her school and community. She sits on the athletic council at her school where she helps organize athletic events. She also plays for the Kemptville Storm Midget Hockey Team. Caitlin’s determination to be successful in the show ring is quite apparent when she describes her routine with her 4-H projects.

Every year, Kyleigh attends the Ontario Student Leadership Conference (OSLC) Caitlin with Mountain “In 2013, my 4-H project Harmonyview held in Niagara, Ontario with students Ridge WB Primrose. Holstein Youth Caitlin has attended the Royal every year since she has been eligible and each year has made the showmanship cut at the TD Classic. Her most memorable year in 4-H is when she showed Cherry Crest Lavanguard Roz as a March calf. Caitlin and her parents purchased Roz that spring at the Cherry Crest dispersal. Caitlin mentions that Roz got overlooked at the sale as she was just a young calf and sold along with some high profile animals. Roz went on to become All-Canadian 4-H Junior Calf, All-Ontario Junior Calf and Honourable Mention All-Canadian Junior Calf. That year at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic she placed 5th in showmanship and 2nd in conformation. “I love the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic, you are competing against the best of the best. It’s a great feeling to do well at such a competitive show,” says Caitlin. Caitlin remembered showing Roz in the National Black and White Holstein Show at the Royal as an exciting and nerve-racking experience, as she showed in Roz in the ring against the experienced leadspeople in the industry. Roz placed 3rd overall and 1st 4-H in the open show in the Junior Calf class in 2012.

This year, Caitlin is showing Mountain Ridge WB Savannah (Windbrook), a daughter of Roz this year in 4-H. She hopes to work towards placing in the top 5 at the TD Classic this November. In the future, Caitlin hopes to get the opportunity to work at larger open shows to get more experience with showing animals. She is also currently in the process of becoming a Junior Member and hopes to continue to own animals under her prefix with her parents. Kyleigh and Caitlin would thank the family of Cherry Crest Holsteins and Randy Sequin (aka the “gum man”), of EastGen for always being positive mentors as they strive to be competitive in 4-H. The girls say both have given their time in different ways to help them be successful in 4-H. Randy is a main reason they got interested in showing and always comes to shows to support the 4-H participants. The Cherry Crest family always works so well together and they strive to have the same goals as a family. Nancy and Don have both taken the time to come to meetings and teach their club about judging and showing.

Together with Stefen Robinson, Ted Clarke, Gary Markus, and Adrian Vander Wielen, I arrived back at home October 4 following a weeklong trip to the United States. What began with a tour of assorted dairy farms and culminated with the World Dairy Expo in Madison, WI, was a trip that truly showed me the full spectrum of the American dairy industry.

that their objective is always to breed a great animal and sell it so they can breed another great animal. Budjon Farm and Milk Source have groups of cattle that most people could only dream of owning but unlike Luck-E, these animals were specially housed. These two extremely impressive show barns boast a collection of only the finest animals and bring the best of the industry together under one roof.

The farms that we visited ranged from small tie-stall herds, to massive multi thousand cow dairies, to extreme show and genetic herds. The most popular stop among the group was Mooville Dairy, a small family farm that had evolved to support a large family. To allow the dairy to remain profitable while the next generation got involved, the farm built a processing facility to market their own ice cream and milk. This not only served as a vital part in keeping the whole family in the business, but provided a very effective way for them to manage low milk prices by providing premium, valueadded products.

The trip was a good balance of both high type and management. We saw herds that had a clear emphasis on cow families, breeding type, and marketing genetics, contrasted by intensively managed herds intent on capturing economies of scale. Rosy Lane Holsteins was one production focused tour stop, which put great emphasis on Net Merit, achieved impressive cow efficiency and demonstrated superior herd management. Everything on this farm had been meticulously costed, as they showed us with internal reports and detailed ration sheets. Animals were never sacrificed for the sake of money but every expense was justified. Great animal care was also evidenced at all of the other stops on the tour, which included Our group also agreed there was no shortage of impressive cows Ever-Green View, Ragnar Holsteins, Sunnyside Dairy Farm, Krull to see during the farm tours. It is a true dairy spectacle. Almost 2500 cattle from the seven major dairy breeds were in attendance. There were exhibits, displays, innovative technologies, and classroom sessions that offered new ideas, explained emerging trends, and tackled some of the challenges facing the dairy industry. In the show ring, it was clear to see the high degree of influence that Canadian genetics, and individuals, are having on the global dairy industry. We were all impressed by the domination of Canadian cattle in the Holstein show’s Champion Bred and Owned class. Having toured the farm only days before, it was thrilling to watch Milk Source Genetics capture the Grand Champion title in three separate breeds and then also win Supreme Champion with Lovhill Goldwyn Katrysha. This truly was an amazing trip, full of great people and great animals. Engaging with our tour hosts and networking with industry partners at the Expo provided mutually beneficial exchanges of information. All of the individuals we met expressed their respect and admiration for the Canadian dairy farmer and of the supply management system. As we eagerly toured and learned about the different farms we visited, we were well received and treated as ambassadors to a respected Canadian dairy industry. It was a unique experience for all of us on the trip and a great opportunity. Thanks to Adrian for

A new excellent cow or a very good two-year-old is a breeding accomplishment. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. Peter Brand named General Manager The Ontario Holstein Branch Board of Directors is pleased to announce the addition of Peter Brand as the new General Manager of the Ontario Holstein Branch. Peter will assume the role on November 1st 2015. He will work out of the Ontario Holstein Branch office in Cambridge, as well as serving as the Field Representative for West-Central Ontario. “Peter brings a unique combination of skills and background to this role,” says President Ian Fraser. “In these fast-paced times, the Board is thrilled to support someone who offers both industry experience and a vision for the future, including the increased use of data in day to day herd management.” The son of Holstein breeders, the new General Manager was raised on a dairy farm in Huron County and has dedicated his career to the dairy industry. A graduate of Ontario Agriculture College at the University of Guelph in Farm Operation and Management, Peter’s career has included a variety of roles including serving as a technician for the former United Breeders; coordinator of Field Systems with the former Gencor; and over 14 years with Canadian Dairy Network (CDN) in a variety of roles, the most recent being Industry Service Manager. Major projects during that time include the Canadian Test-Day Model; Data Exchange System including health trait data; and SNP genotyping for the use in genomic evaluations. Most recently, Peter has served as the Manager of Business and Technology Solutions at Holstein Canada for the past three years. Peter has been the main force behind the complete rewrite of the Herdbook software at Holstein Canada to be launched later this fall. In effort to see this project through this major milestone, Peter will remain with Holstein Canada until November 1st. “With Peter playing such a key role in the rewrite of Holstein Canada’s Herdbook software, and with the Herdbook software also being a very important tool for the Branch, we are very supportive of having Peter join later in the year,” says President Fraser. “I’m looking forward to reconnecting with our producers and working with the Ontario Holstein Branch staff and Board of Directors,” says Peter Brand. “We have a great industry that is constantly changing, and working closely with grassroots and industry makes us strong to navigate through these changes.” The Board of Directors would also like to acknowledge the deep appreciation they have for the current Ontario Holstein Branch team for their support during the transition this summer. “The summer and fall are always very busy with member events, and their dedication to the Branch and to its members is highly motivating. We know they will make a great team with Peter. The future for the Ontario Holstein Branch is bright,” adds President Fraser.

Holstein Canada’s New Herd Enrollment Program Gorriemorrie, Gorrie, ON

By Angela Howard

Encouragement from an industry partner while visiting the farm inspired Heike Hofman to consider registering his 210 cow herd. My visit shortly thereafter resulted in a complete registration of the Gorriemorrie herd and an interest in the programs and services that are offered from the dairy industry!

H

Heike came to Canada with his parents where they began dairy farming in an older 40 cow tie-stall barn in 1991. The family purchased a 100 acre empty dairy farm outside of Gorrie in Huron County. At the time, they were anxious to start milking and compiled a herd by purchasing cattle from a number of herds, purchasing grades and some purebreds. In 1996, the family made the decision to build a new barn to improve cow comfort. A 120 cow free-stall barn was built with a double 10 parallel parlor. In 1998, Heike’s parents took a step back from the farm and allowed him to take over more of the day to day work and decisions for the herd. 2003 was a big year for Heike with marrying his wife Sharon and building another new barn. Again, to allow for growth and cow comfort, a 220 cow freestall was erected. At that time, space was left for the building of a rotary parlor, but the cattle were still milked in the old parlor. As fate would have it, in 2008 Heike was drawn to the robotic age and installed 3 Lely robots in the new barn. This decision proved to be very positive and the Hofmans have been very pleased with the choice they made to install robots. Not only has it offered great flexibility, but it has been a positive for their cows. Today, they are milking between 210-220 cows and have replaced one of the original robots with an A4 and added another A4, totaling 4 robots. They are also now farming 650 acres. Heike and Sharon have 4 children, Derek 11, Kirsten 9, Jason 7 and Janelle 5. The entire family enjoys farm life and each plays a role on the farm. Heike is happy to be starting his herd on registrations and DHI as it offers a great start for his children if they are interested in the future.

and he sees continuous improvement with the implementation of robots in the herd. Long-lasting, powerful cows can be seen throughout the herd of this new member. Although the herd is predominantly black and white, you will see a few red and white animals as well to satisfy an interest of this young breeder. Heike truly enjoys working with his cattle and loves to see what is coming in the next generation. By enrolling as a new member with Holstein Canada, and registering his cattle he is able to more effectively analyze these generations. I certainly look forward to working with this enthusiastic member for years to come.

Back (L to R) Heike and Sharon Hofman and son Derek. Front (L to R) Kirsten, Jason and Janelle.

he receives from DHI and recognizes that even though the robot will offer information on the herd, he still receives more from DHI and registrations. This is stored information that will always be there to access. When considering the benefits of registration, Heike felt that being able to individually track and trace cow families would assist with more effective mating of his herd. He also heard that by having registered animals, he would see greater prices when selling his animals. With all animals now registered from birth, he has seen a tangible difference in prices when selling, even for cull. Heike has participated in the AAA program for about 4 years, but is considering classification as well in the near future.

Management is of the utmost importance to the Hofmans. They use DHI and the information from the robots to individually manage the cows in their herd and to selectively When breeding cattle, Heike focusses on mate them using AI services. Heike is a firm high lifetime production and functional believer in the herd management reports that type. Longevity is a real goal for him as well

Across Canada, provincial Branches of Holstein Canada were formed to work closely with members in the province and promote the services provided by the Branch and Holstein Canada. Each province’s Board of Directors sets its activity fees based on the budget it requires to carry out Branch activities and services for the year. Ontario’s fee – currently set at 12% – is added to each registration, classification, verification and pedigree completed by a member. We are one of only two provinces to employ a fulltime staff and pride ourselves on offering an exceptional level of service and value-added activities to our members. Leadership also comes from the provincial Board of Directors that sees policies and represents our members’ visions for the future.

Our Mission: To assist and grow the membership of the Ontario Holstein Branch through youth activities, education, breed promotion and act as an advocate for the dairy industry.

Jim & Carol, Scott, Andrew &ElyseLockie Farm: Lockmar Holsteins Herd Size: Milking 80 with 260 head total Operation Type: Tie stall with TMR Location: Sutton, Ontario

6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation? We are proud that we are a Master Breeder Herd that is currently 84 per cent VG or EX, which is entirely homebred. Also, we are most proud that the next generation will be carrying on our love and passion for cows here at Lockmar. 7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be? We currently have a modern, well ventilated tie-stall barn which makes chores fairly straight forward. We do think one day, a free stall barn with robots will be something to consider as labour is a big challenge for any dairy farm. 8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why? Being a Holstein breeder from York Region how could you not love Quality B C Frantisco EX-96-3E. She was truly an amazing cow. She achieved great accomplishments in the show ring and also through her offspring. Who wouldn’t want a 27 Star, two-time Royal Grand Champion and Cow of the Year like that in their barn! 9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out that you wish you had been told? Starting with a grade herd, the main goal was to achieve a Master Breeder Shield, but it seemed so far out of reach. But listening to Master Breeders and asking questions got us within reach of our ultimate goal and eventually achieving it. Always hold your head high, sometimes you will be faced with tough decisions but you will get through. Work hard and ask questions, you are never finished learning.

Scott, Carol, Jim, Andrew and Elyse Lockie 1. What is your family’s history with Holsteins? Jim’s great grandfather and grandfather moved to the current farm in 1921. Jim’s father Byron and himself became members of Holstein Canada in 1974 and started to register cattle. In 2001, they were honoured to earn a Master Breeder Shield. Currently the farm is managed by Jim and Carol and two sons Scott and Andrew.

10. How do you use genomic information in your herd and what are your thoughts on the future of genomics? We try to use genomic bulls with proven families. We think genomics can help if used in the right situation, but being old fashioned we still love to breed our cows to proven bulls. 11. How many cows do you flush each year? How do you market your embryos that are for sale? Currently we don’t flush as often as we used to. Recently we have had some bad luck with embryos and felt it had not been worth the investment. We mostly keep the embryos and use them to improve our herd.

2. What are your breeding goals? Our main objective when breeding cattle is to breed “The Canadian 12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait Kind.” Our goal is to be able to produce high component milk do you value most? (milk, fat and protein)from high type cows. We find that udder and leg health is a huge selling point. When a cow has those traits, chances are she will have longevity which ultimately 3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program? equals profitability. We value udder and leg health, these traits most The most important tools in our breeding program consist of often make for a reliable, healthy and profitable cow. classification, DHI and the herd mating provided from EastGen. 13. Which bulls do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years and today? 4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation. In the past, Comestar Leader and Silky Gibson had a huge impact The ideal cow for our operation would have to be a good sized, well- on our herd creating strong, powerful and real dairy cows. Recently, balanced cow with a great mammary system and correct feet and we have had tremendous success with Braedale Goldwyn and legs. Having a cow with depth of rib and lots of capacity enabling Regancrest Design. Currently, we are very pleased with our milking her to produce larger volumes of milk is also a must. Pine-Tree Sid and Gillette Windbrook daughters. 5. What cow in your barn is currently the “Heart of the Herd”? The Heart of our Herd is Lockmar Gibson Allison, EX-91-6E. She is an extremely powerful cow, a real barn cow! She has a current lifetime production of 105,518 KG in eight lactations. Her most recent lactation in her 11th year produced 17,695 KG of milk at 851, 4.8% fat, 611, 3.5% protein (327-424-342). Other members of this cow family, herself and her progeny have been huge contributors to our herd’s success. Her grand dam, Lockmar Astro Jet Allison was our first homebred excellent. Allison is the definition of a cow that combines type, conformation and longevity.

14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Everything on the farm contributes to the overall success of our operation. Attention to detail is crucial, making sure each calf, heifer and cow is healthy and happy. A comfortable cow is a happy cow. Cow comfort and quality feeds leads to a more profitable cow. It all begins the moment the calf is born. Everyone can agree that the success of a cow all begins when it’s a calf. The main contributing factor to the success of our operation has to be the hard work and dedication from our entire family involved on the farm. www.ontario.holstein.ca

“Our two Meridian daughters both scored 86 as 2-year-olds. They have developed really nice since calving and have excellent udder texture. These cows are the nicest uddered 2-year-olds we have ever calved. They have a great will to milk and sit way above average for milk production. I purchased both these daughters because I liked their conformation and pedigrees and I had seen enough Meridian daughters that I decided I needed to own some! Tom and Tracy Benschop of Benrise Holsteins, Bowmanville, ON, currently milking two Meridian daughters.
