editor’s note

W

Well it’s a new year and a perfect time to make plans for your life and farm for 2016. I hope you will make plans to attend the Ontario Holstein Branch AGM that will be held in February in Cornwall in beautiful Glengarry! Also, plan to take in the many farm tours as breeders open their doors for the Annual District tours. All of the details are available further back in The Link starting on page 36. This issue is full of ‘results’ as well. You will find the All-Ontario results, write-ups on the National Holstein Show from the Royal, the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic, the first Ontario Holstein Junior All Ontario Program and summaries of regional shows. You will also find what results from fighting for your dream in our breeder feature on Kuiperscrest Holsteins or the results of spectacular management of Master Breeder herd, Summitholm Holsteins in our Black and White section. Lastly, they say ‘time flies when you’re having fun’! As I hand The Link back over to editor Andrea Emond, returning from her maternity leave, I want to thank the Ontario Holstein Branch for their continued trust in myself and 31st Line Communications to keep The Link going while Andrea was away. I sincerely have enjoyed meeting many breeders and industry people from across our great province. I will truly miss this position and memories I have made working on The Link. Sincerely,

Julie McIntosh, Interim Link Editor thelink@ontario.holstein.ca

What a great two months at Ontario Holstein! We had a successful TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic that gave 355 young people the opportunity to show their county pride and achievement of hard work with their animals. It was an opportunity of a lifetime to stay and show in the Ricoh Coliseum at the Royal Winter Fair. The excitement and high caliber of animals at the National Holstein Show show found the Grand Champion bred by one of our Waterloo Club members! Going through a number of Club Annual Meetings at the time of writing this, it is great to see the enthusiasm of our club members, directors, sponsors and host farms! As the year came to a close, we had committee meetings to review and time to wrap up the year and plan for the opportunities in 2016. The success of the events for Ontario Holstein members and your children is the willingness and energy of all the volunteers that make these events happen. There is always opportunity for more volunteers to help make good events great. Great events make strong clubs and strong clubs make for a strong Ontario Holstein Branch which in turn makes for a strong national Holstein Canada! I will invite you take the opportunity to attend your Ontario Holstein Annual General Meeting in Cornwall to celebrate another great year promoting our Holstein breed. There is a super program including farm tours to see and talk to your fellow members and share in the ideas of those farm operations. If you are unable to take the time to travel to the most easterly part of our province there will be District Farm tours closer to home in early spring 2016. Best wishes for a healthy and prosperous 2016! Regards,

Peter Brand, General Manager, Ontario Holstein Branch

Canadian Dairy XPO partners with Dairy Farmers of Canada – Embracing Blue Cow Spirit! Canadian Dairy XPO (CDX) and Dairy Farmers of Canada (DFC) embrace pride within the Canadian dairy industry by launching the blue cow spirit initiative at the 2016 XPO. The blue cow spirit initiative serves two purposes: promoting pride within the Canadian dairy industry and allowing producers to save $10 off admission into CDX, making regular admission now only $15. “The total value proposition for attending dairy producers has been calculated in excess of $150 dollars, but with the blue cow spirit initiative, producers pay only $15 in gate admission,” states CDX Marketing Manager, Donna Underhill. “Dairy producers can wear existing blue cow apparel or purchase blue cow apparel at one of two DFC Blue Cow Retail Outlets, located on-site at CDX. All blue cow branded clothing is accepted as part of this offer, but must be worn in and throughout CDX. The idea is to get a sea of blue cow walking through CDX 2016. We are proud to support the dairy industry and kick off our new spring operating dates (April 6th & 7th, 2016) with this exciting initiative.” “By working with motivated partners such as DFC, we are able to make producers and their families feel welcome and rewarded for their commitment to the Canadian dairy industry,” states CDX General Manager and Founder, Jordon Underhill. “With ongoing global trade pressure, there is more pride and passion for the 100% Canadian Milk symbol than ever before. Team CDX will welcome dairy farm families this April as our VIP guests.”

Kuiperscrest Keeping dreams alive at

When one walks into the barn at Kuiperscrest Holsteins, they will find two rows of deep-ribbed Holsteins with high quality udders in a tidy, well-kept barn. The observation is the result of attention to detail, strong management, investments in genetics, hard work and drive.

the milk cheque.

Often found joining Jasen at the barn is his wife Doreen and two daughters Meghan aged 6, Courtney aged 5 and son Jayden aged 3. Originally from a ranch in British Columbia, Doreen met Jasen while he was travelling in the province. She then came to visit him Jasen Kuipers grew up on the family dairy farm located near and broke her leg making her visit longer, allowing Jasen to get to Wellington, ON in picturesque Prince Edward County. Only a know her better. The rest is history. Doreen feeds calves, helps with few miles from wineries and minutes from the beaches of Lake shows and does other work around the farm when needed. Ontario, Jasen, 32, knew he wanted to farm, but with 50 cows and The Kuipercrest herd is milked three times per day with Jasen doing two brothers and his father, there wasn’t enough work. He started them majority of the milking with help from his mother Renee and working at a neighbour’s farm, Parksdale Holsteins, down the road brother Ryan. Ryan and his father Wayne handle all of the cropping at age 16. He worked to take over the management of the farm as on the farm as Jasen’s real interest is the cows. the herdsperson and was making all of the decisions, working there for 11 years. Always wanting a herd of his own, he asked if he could The cows at Kuiperscrest are fed a TMR haylage, corn silage, buy into the cows. Jasen started flushing some of the better cows supplement, dry hay (chopped with a hay chopper) and high moisture. and his own herd was started. The prefix he chose to use was his All the feed except the supplement is grown on the farm. Jasen’s father mainly looks after making the feed. The recent addition of the grandfather’s, Kuiperscrest. hay chopper has increased production. Jasen’s grandfather, Geert Kuipers got interested in purebreds with Gordon and Ross Parks. He was once the president of the county Feeding has not always been easy. Jasen has sold sexed embryos from Sizzle to Japan. One of the first flushes that Jasen ever did has a neat story. “Our vet He has an awesome Kingboy calf from Sizzle in the heifer pen. at the time saw a big black two-year-old and suggested that I flush Adam Hunt, Jasen’s Select Sires GenerVations sales representative, suggested breeding Sizzle to McCutchen, trying to find an outcross for the Goldwyn. Jasen wanted to sell embryos, but embryo agents were more into proven sires at the time so he ended up putting them into recipients. He did get a couple heifers, showed them and has sold embryos out of them. “I would like to get into higher genomic cows from strong families,” says Jasen. “I think about it. It all takes time. For me, genomics is a tool.” When Jasen breeds a cow he does his research, looking at a sire’s numbers as well as the cow family and will make the decision. He still considers genomic young sires as test sires. He has used

I didn’t want to because she was from a pasture bull but I did because of the cow’s pedigree,” says Jasen noting she goes back to Parksdale Minnie Mose EX-5*, a prominent cow owned jointly by Oak Ridges and Parksdale. He flushed the cow, Parksdale W Lynne VG-86 to Comestar Lee and got five black heifer calves. She had a couple other daughters plus the five that all went Very Good or at least Good Plus 83 points, which earned her eight stars. Jasen has always had a passion for showing. He grew up in the 4-H program and his dad showed cows off and on. He has been showing on his own for about 10 years. For the 2015 Prince Edward County Show, Jasen brought 18 head. “I only do that because there

are about four farmers in our county that bring cows to the show. I wanted to keep the numbers up and the show going,” he laughs. “I was Premier Exhibitor and got a lot of seconds.”

Looking ahead down the road, Jasen would like to see succession planning start for the family and him work into ownership. Someday, he would like to build a new dairy barn, probably with milking robots to ease the workload and allow him to spend more time with his family.

“I would love to be a Master Breeder in my career, to get that special call from Holstein Canada,” says Jasen. He appears to be well on his way with the constant improvement of the herd as another goal for Jasen. The current classification is 2 ME, 1 EX, 28 VG, and 25 GP. “When the classifier comes, I can really see how the bar is being raised to improve the Holstein breed through classification,” says Jasen. “I have realized how much pickier I need to be and take the time when picking a sire to mate to a cow.” Family time and free time (when they get it) is important to Jasen and Doreen. They spend that time training calves, going to auction sales and taking part in family and church events.

Jasen is young at the age of 32, but is proud to be the third generation to work on the family farm. He speaks with words of wisdom on his continuous journey to becoming a dairy farmer. “It can be difficult being young and ambitious, not having quota of your own,” says Jasen. “Fight for what you want and don’t do useless work that won’t get you anywhere. Don’t give up and have determination, as there is usually a way for things to work out if you really want something.” With this attitude Jasen, Doreen and their family will achieve all of their dreams in the future.

The third generation farm is owned by Joel’s parents Steve and Marg Hartman. Owen’s dad Matt works at the farm as well. Owen’s parents Matt and Lisa Hartman also operate a 200-acre organic cash crop farm not far away. The families often help each other out. The boys have always been found at the dairy barn, helping with milking, bedding and feeding since they were young. Presently they milk 60 cows in a parlour with a compost bedding pack and crop 450 acres organically. Joel and Owen say they are the only members of the third generation interested in taking over their parents’ operations. Looking towards the future, Joel and Owen could see themselves working with each other, whether it is on the same farm or different farms.

Joel Hartman Joel is currently in grade 12 at St. Michael Catholic Secondary School in Stratford, ON. After graduating, he plans on advancing his knowledge in agriculture at Ridgetown College. Some of the highlights include: second at the Perth County 4-H show, fourth at the Perth County Open Show, and fifth at the Western Ontario Championship show. A NEW EXCELLENT COW OR A VERY GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLD IS A BREEDING ACCOMPLISHMENT. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. From September 2015 through to the end of November 2015, there were 438 1st time Excellent cows and 201 Very Good 2-year-olds classified in Ontario. These numbers are a true testament to the commitment our breeders have to breeding structurally sound cows that will stand the test of time. Congratulations to the owners and breeders of Ontario’s new 1st time Excellent cows and Very Good 2-year-olds! SEPTEMBER EXs

Holstein Canada’s New Herd Enrollment Program Ferme Delurenic Ltd, ST-ISIDORE, ON

BY KRIS MACLEOD

FERME DELURENIC LTD WAS ESTABLISHED IN 1879 WHEN ERIC GRATTON’S GREAT GRANDFATHER, DELPHIS MOVED TO THE ST-ISIDORE ONTARIO AREA FROM ST. MARTINE, QC. THE FARM NAME AND HERD PREFIX, DELURENIC, PAY HOMAGE TO DELPHIS AS WELL AS HIS GRANDFATHER AND FATHER’S NAMES LUCIEN AND RENE RESPECTIVELY AS WELL AS HIS OWN. an excellent cow. For production, at one time they had thought 12,000 kg was really high, but their rolling average almost reached it one time at 11,825 kg. Eric feels a goal of getting the herd to 12-13,000 kg and a 300 BCA average should be reachable. When asked to pass on advice to someone who is thinking of registering, classifying and milk recording Eric said he felt it is money well invested.

“It allows you to compare with a bench mark what you are doing right and what you might need to focus more on,” says Eric. “I also feel networking with other breeders is important to see what worked for them over the years and what they are currently working on.”

Four generations have been involved with the farm so far. In 2010, the farm was purchased from Eric’s father and it is run by Eric Gratton and Becky Miller with their daughter Hudzen, aged four being the fifth generation and “junior management” department.

In 2013, he had enough 2-yearolds to be official and in 2014 the herd average for the year was 10,925 kg of milk with a BCA of 247-272-256. The farm received an award from their local Co-op, putting them into the “Club Synchro 750” for herds over 750 total BCA.

Today’s operation has 30 milking cows in a tie-stall barn with about 30 replacements. They own 400 acres, but farm a total of 600. Your Ontario Holstein Branch

...working for you

285 Fountain Street South, Cambridge ON N3H 1J2 • 519-653-6180 • branch@ontario.holstein

Across Canada, provincial Branches of Holstein Canada were formed to work closely with members in the province and promote the services provided by the Branch and Holstein Canada. Each province’s Board of Directors sets its activity fees based on the budget it requires to carry out Branch activities and services for the year. Ontario’s fee – currently set at 12% – is added to each registration, classification, verification and pedigree completed by a member. We are one of only two provinces to employ a fulltime staff and pride ourselves on offering an exceptional level of service and value-added activities to our members. Leadership also comes from the provincial Board of Directors that sees policies and represents our members’ visions for the future.

OUR MISSION: To assist and grow the membership of the Ontario Holstein Branch through youth activities, education, breed promotion and act as an advocate for the dairy industry.
