president’s note

I

A REAL HONOUR It’s a real honour to serve as President of the Ontario Holstein Branch! Thank you to everyone for the great support since I came on the Board. I’ve really enjoyed coming up through the ranks and have always believed that it’s teamwork through and through when it comes to Branch decisions. Our industry is changing and no doubt things will have to change at the Branch level as well. These changes will be our biggest challenge as we go forward. During this time, the goal of assisting our membership will be kept at the forefront, as will promoting the youth activities for which Ontario is so well known. Having the opportunity to attend various Holstein events throughout Ontario over the years that I have been on the Board has only reinforced my thoughts on what a great industry we have. The people involved in our industry, whether producers, industry partners or upand-coming Youth never cease to amaze me with the passion they have for our industry and breed. We would like encourage our members to take advantage of all of the programs available through the Branch as well as Holstein Canada. The new herd book offers a lot of herd improvement tools that you as a member should take advantage of and in the end improve things on the farm. Welcome to the ‘newbies’ on the Ontario Holstein Board! Joining us to serve the Western district is Hans Pfister and from the Eastern district, Cole Verburg. I hope they both enjoy it as much as I have!

Sincerely,

Sandy O’Hara, Ontario Holstein Board President Great Friends!! Great Times!! Great Cows!!

DOING THE “RIGHT THINGS” What a great time to be in the dairy industry in Ontario, with recent years having enjoyed unprecedented quota growth! As a field service organization we have assisted many herds with full farm herd transfers along with many new enrollment herds starting up. It’s encouraging to see the passion and interest these new members have for doing the “right things” to maximize their return on investment. The “right things” in my opinion, always included registration, milk recording, and classification as the traditional basis for herd improvement at both the farm and also at the national level. More recently genomic testing has proven useful in providing information that can assist breeders in designing the next generation. A recent addition to the list of “right things” is cow comfort and many barns have been renovated or built with cow comfort and labour efficiency as the key cornerstones. Classifiers have been trained and certified as Animal Care Assessors and every dairy herd will be analyzed and evaluated in the upcoming 16 months. National Livestock Identification for Dairy (NLID-1-877-771-6543) tags will become mandatory in a few months, yet based on personal observation we note that likely 5 per cent are not NLID tagged, 20 per cent of Holstein calves born are never registered, 25 per cent are not milk recorded and 30 per cent are not classified. As a progressive dairyman reading this message, please continue to encourage your fellow producers to embrace these “right things” to maximize herd productivity. Soon my term as interim GM will come to an end. I wish to express a sincere thank to the support I received from members, club directors, industry partners and especially my Holstein Ontario teammates. I also extend a warm welcome to our new GM, Merina Johnston, and encourage you to offer her the same support I received.

THE JOURNEY TO HERE BY ANDREA EMOND

airy farming has been quite a journey for Wray and Carole Bowen and their family. There was the time their son Bob’s wife, Mandy, got her first lesson in teat dipping (quite an experience for a girl from town); the time Wray got into silo gas and spent a week in the hospital on a ventilator and six months after that recovering; the day they received their first Excellent cow and the night Wray delivered their youngest son, David, in the car while enroute to the hospital after a long day of ploughing. There were afternoons spent getting tractors unstuck; weeks spent housebound, black and blue, after being pinned by a heifer; months of training 4-H calves and years dedicated to raising healthy cows – and happy kids – on their family farm in Aylmer, Ontario. “Quite a lot has happened on this farm,” says Carole, pouring over memories from years past contained in photo albums spread across her kitchen table. But it all began with a young Carole Liddle, who was raised on this very farm and loves the farming life just as much today as she did back then.

Clockwise from top: Carole with her granddaughter, Claire (8), going through farm photos from years gone by; Carole’s parents, Percy and Hazel Liddle, took out their Liddlrock prefix in 1956; the farm has seen quite a few changes over the years as witnessed in these photos taken in the late 50’s, early 90’s and 2016. The original barn dates back to 1870. PHOTOS SUBMITTED.

Growing up as the youngest of three girls, Carole spent most of her time outdoors. In the barn, cleaning out stalls, feeding and playing with calves was where she felt most at home and working alongside her mom and dad whenever she had the chance was one of her favourite things to do. “I was a cow-crazy tomboy!” she says with a laugh. “The closest thing my dad got to a boy!” Her parents, Percy and Hazel Liddle, purchased the farm in 1939 and worked hard to make a living with a small herd of grade cattle and some pigs, horses and chickens. In 1942, Carole’s father purchased his first purebred heifer from his neighbour, Marshall McKnight. It was a simple transaction: the calf was sucking and McKnight wanted to get rid of her. At the same time, Percy was looking to buy. They settled on a price and the heifer made the two-mile trip down the road to live at the Liddle farm. After giving birth to a bull calf, she had four daughters, the first of which almost the entire herd at Liddlerock traces back to today.

at Liddlerock as much as he could. Friends, relatives and neighbours also pitched in after her father fell ill, holding a hay bee to bring in the harvest, helping with morning and evening chores and trucking milk to the Carnation Plant in Aylmer. When her father passed away in 1975, Wray and Carole took over the day-to-day management and came to the realization that the farm’s success now depended upon them. “It was a big thing back then – him leaving his folks and coming [to farm] here,” Carole says.

By the mid-1950s, the Liddles liked what they were seeing in their purebred cows and decided to take out a membership with Holstein Canada. On January 19, 1956, they registered their Liddlerock prefix, merging their surname with the name of their herd sire (Rockwood Lot-o-Joy), whom they had purchased from Rockwood Holsteins in Also uncommon at the time was a woman taking responsibility for Winnipeg four years earlier. the farm’s breeding decisions. Since Carole had grown graduating from high school, only one thing really seemed to make up with the cows and knew each of their strengths and weaknesses sense to her. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do so I came home first hand, having her choose the bulls seemed only natural. She’s to farm,” she says. She continued to work hard, gaining as much continued to make all of the farm’s breeding decisions ever since and knowledge along the way as she could. and Jack (1), love the farm and each has a favourite cow in the barn. Like his mom, Bob’s interest in the farm dates back to when he was a kid growing up here. “Ever since he was knee-high to a grasshopper, it’s been in his blood,” Carole says, recalling how her son would push square bales down the alley when he was hardly bigger than they were, and how at eight years old, he was ready to quit school and take over the farm when his dad was in the hospital recovering after inhaling silo gas. After high school, Bob worked off the farm for a few years, driving tractor for Mandy’s uncle and doing some custom work for neighbours. Then, he and two friends started a new venture growing 200 acres of vegetables in the area and and selling them to a processor in the Holland Marsh who processed them and later sold them to Loblaws. Milking at home in the morning, being gone all day and then coming home again at night to milk was no easy feat, and at the end of 2015, Bob decided to get out of the vegetable business. While all three children helped on the farm growing up, the oldest, Julie, currently works as an HR Manager for Agropur in Woodstock and their youngest, David, recently started a new job for Rogers in Toronto working on Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Wray and Carole are justifiably proud of each of them. In 2007, shortly after Bob and Mandy got married, plans for a new barn were on the horizon. “The four of us went on a honeymoon to Exeter to look at barns,” Bob says with a laugh, thankful that his wife is such a good sport. By October, construction was underway. During the planning phase, every effort was taken to ensure the barn would be properly grounded. In the early 1990s, the Bowens experienced tingle voltage in the barn, and in a two-year period, the quality of their herd plummeted. Cows all but refused to return to the barn after being pastured, mastitis was at an all-time high and the family had no choice but to dump milk and cull some cows. Ontario Hydro couldn’t find the problem, Wray says, until one of their technicians got tired of listening to their complaints and threw the ground rod into a wet trench, picking up a reading. Soon after, grounding rods were put in place on either side of the barn at the hydro poles on their property and a Hammond Filter was installed. Thankfully, their issues were resolved quickly after that and things started to return to normal.

But the Bowens weren’t about to deal with it again in the new barn and Wray recalls telling their builders, “We want this sucker grounded and we want it done right!” They worked with a great electrician and by July of the following year, they were milking in their new properly grounded barn. The Bowens breed for type and feed for production. They’re currently milking 55 cows with an average production of 41 kg of milk per day and a BCA of 255-262-268. In addition to putting emphasis on strong udders, udder texture and good feet and legs, they also focus on longevity. “We don’t buy any, so we want them to last,” says son Bob, who looks after the twice-daily milkings and feeds a TMR ration. Bob and Wray share the fieldwork on their 400 acres of corn, Above: Carole with her son, Bob, during a Twilight Meeting held at Liddlerock in 2015. Liddlerock is quite likely one of a handful of herds that hasn’t bought anything in over 50 years, yet they’ve worked with what they have and continue to see improvements with each generation. “That’s what dad and mom started and that’s how we stayed,” Carole explains. “We wanted to see if we could make changes and work on the cow’s strengths and see where we could go.” Right now they’re using sires such as Mario, Cinderdoor, Expander and Benji, though in the past they’ve had good luck with Windbrook, Reginald and Goldwyn. Dundee continues to be influential and is responsible for many of their Excellent cows over the years. Browsing through the latest sire reports, Carole explains her straightforward approach to breeding good cows. She relies heavily on classification papers and looks closely at cow families in order to find the strengths and weaknesses of each animal, trying to balance them accordingly. “Mom looks at a cow and immediately thinks, ‘how can we improve it?’” Bob says. “She’s always thinking ahead.” The family’s first Excellent cow came in August 1999 when Liddlerock Regatta Rosaly went Excellent in her fourth lactation. “We’ll never forget it!” Wray says of Rosaly, who went on to score EX-90-5E and make 86,350 kgs in nine lactations. Tracing back to the family’s very first brood star cow, Rosaly had six daughters including a Revue daughter who went EX 2* and another five by Charles, Cousteau, Progress, Outfielder and Outside, all of whom scored GP-81 or higher. “The first Excellent cow is hard, but after that they come a lot quicker!” Other notable families include Rosaly’s granddaughter, Liddlerock Outside Ricki VG-88 1*, whose Goldwyn Ring daughter scored EX90-3E in her sixth lactation and received a Longtime Production award earlier this year for 60,000 kgs of milk lifetime. Liddlerock Lee Beppie, another herd favourite, scored EX-91-6E 4* in her ninth lactation and produced 80,000 kgs lifetime, with her daughter, Liddlerock Charisma Becky VG-87 completing the same record a mere 16 months after. A final family, with Liddlerock Noble Kim VG-85 2* at the helm, produced four daughters (three of which were GP or better) and 13 granddaughters, (10 of which were GP or better). Kim was a strong brood cow who made her mark on the herd back in the 1980s.

and was sold to Brent Howe and his American partners in 1997. In 1998 she was second Senior 3-Year-Old at World Dairy Expo and was named Honourable Mention All-American Senior 3-Year-Old, eventually going on to score EX-92-USA. Though the Bowens no longer take cows to their County Show, they do enjoy providing 4-H calves for neighbour kids in need. Carole has a soft spot for youth going through the 4-H program as it was something she enjoyed growing up. In fact, she won the very first award for the Top 1st Year 4-H Member with a Holstein calf in 1961 and still has the calf blanket she received as a prize from the Elgin County Holstein Club. She spent five years as a leader of the East-Elgin Dairy Club and to this day enjoys helping to teach young 4-H’ers how to properly set up their calves. Bob says his mom works just as hard with these kids now as she did when he and his brother were involved. “When you went to the show, mom made a point of making sure that calf was ready to go!” These days, the Bowens look forward to the Breeders’ Cup competition that takes place in their county each spring and rank it as one of the highlights of their year. “It’s a good thing and it’s been good for a lot of farmers,” says Wray of the competition that allows them to keep their cows at home on the farm for judging. “Mom’s the first one to have her entries in each year!” Bob adds. Liddlerock has done well in the annual competition. As successful breeders, the family shares a few strategies that have helped them over the years. “Cross your fingers,” Wray jokes, before turning more serious. “And get some advice. If not from your parents, then from someone you respect.” He adds that no farmer is going to do everything on his own and is thankful to be part of a county where people help one another. “You need someone to mentor you along.” As for what the future holds, Bob says they plan to keep farming and pay off the new barn. He admits the hardest part will be when his parents have to slow down, though neither Wray nor Carole have shown any interest in that just yet. “The cows are her family and if she wasn’t into them like this, we probably wouldn’t be milking,” Bob says of his mom. “Hopefully one day we can get a Master Breeder shield for her.”

Then Wray, who knows his wife of 43 years all too well and understands her love of the farm and her desire to be close to her There’s no denying the number of impressive animals that have come cows, sees a window of opportunity. “Maybe she’d even go on a date out of Liddlerock, but without a doubt, the Bowen’s most memorable with me to pick it up.” cow is Liddlerock Charles Kees. Shown by their son David as a 4-H project in 1995, Kees placed first at the Elgin County Show that year And so, the journey continues.

Celebrating 100 years of good cattle and great people!

Elgin County RESEARCH BY CHARLIE JENKINS; PHOTOS SUBMITTED & COURTESY OF THE ELGIN COUNTY ARCHIVES

you ask someone from Elgin County what makes their W hen 100-year-old club unique, they’re quick to answer. It’s not

“There’s a real working-together,” adds Jim Jenkins, who grew up at Haldrey Farms in Belmont and later farmed under the Buttermoor prefix. Along with his cousins Gord and Charlie, he is the third generation of Jenkinses to have been President of the Elgin club. “The Holstein Club is not just about farming; there’s a social aspect as well.” As a kid in the early 1950s, Jim remembers going to the banquets, which he says always started with a euchre game and ended with a dance. “Us kids used to sit in the back and watch it all from the sidelines!” he recalls fondly. The yearly banquets continue to draw large crowds, although the euchre and dancing has been replaced with silent and live auctions and an awards program honouring veteran breeders, top producers, show winners and outstanding 4-H members.

Some 500 cows were sold to buyers from all over the world at the sale, which was the largest of its kind in Canada and the largest one-day sale in North America in 1973, according to its organizers. Auctioneer William Kent and Bruce Murchison appear to the right of Shore.

Nor is it the fact that the county was at one time home to not one, but two respected sale barns, one of which still operates today. While both of these things are remarkable in their own right, the one thing that makes this county stand out is the group of dedicated breeders that call it home. A Snapshot of Elgin’s Prominent Cows and Breeders Though the club officially began in 1917, the very first Holstein–Friesians arrived in Elgin County in the 1880’s when Alexander Woolley of Springfield purchased two from New York State. While cows at that time were fetching $20 or $30 a head, one of Woolley’s acquisitions cost $200 and went on to win the all-important dairy test at the Toronto Fair in 1885! Since then, many standout cows have been bred or developed of Elgin County; so much so, that the list is much too long to list them all here. A few include: 1908 Edmund Laidlaw of Aylmer (Ourvilla) purchased Dutchland Colantha Sir Abbekerk for $650. Two of his daughters, Homestead Susie Colantha (White Susie) and Ourvilla Susie Abbekerk (Black Susie) made over 26 lbs of fat in one week, being Canada’s first sisters to achieve this feat. Their offspring sold as far away as Japan, and they set the course for domestic and international buyers of Elgin County Holsteins! 1910 Many great cows and bulls were bred at Edgeware, owned by the Dennis family of St. Thomas, and several Championship records made. The herd, which continued until 1990, was the Top Honour List herd in Canada for many years through the 1950s and 60s. Late 1950s Denfield Dewdrop Sovereign EX 7* and Denfield Fond Hope Pansy EX 5*, a dam and daughter pair bred by Percy Dennis, made up the first two of three generations of the prolific Pansy Family to be purchased by the famed Agro Acres. 1950s – 1960s The Dufty family showed Willow Slope Royal Faith VG and Glencrest Maxine Supreme Pabst VG to Reserve and All-Canadian. 1960s – 1970s Pioneer Citation Peachy Flo EX 5*, owned by the Shively family of Springfield (Forest Lee), won countless Class and Best Udder Awards in her lifetime. Four

generations of Shively’s have headed this highly-decorated and well-respected herd (Daniel, Wellington, Bill and currently, Kirk) and many Peach Flo descendants are still at the farm.

1999 Elmvue Astre Collette VG was All-American and All-Canadian Senior 2-Year-Old for owners, Howes, Empey, Fisher and Shores.

1969 Howes Holsteins purchased Werrcroft Model Doris EX 16* as a 2-Year-Old and she was put on an embryo transfer program in 1977, being one of the first in Canada to act as a donor cow. She produced 98 live calves in Canada, six of which scored Excellent.

2001 Walnut Acres Jolt Pandora EX-CAN was 1st 5-Year-Old and Reserve Grand at World Dairy Expo with Howes Holsteins as a syndicate owner. With so much uncertainty after 9/11, she almost didn’t make the trip from the Howe’s farm down to Madison. “Knowing her potential,” Brent Howe says, “we took the risk and we ended up being successful and safe.”

1970s Bred in Elgin and owned by Shore Farms, 20-Year-Old Challenger Sovereign Princess VG 3*, became the first cow in Canada to produce over 300,000 pounds of milk lifetime. This record stood for many years. 1976 The first All-Canadian 4-H Calf Class was started and Charlie Jenkins’ 4-H project, Monoak Sun Anne, was nominated and eventually went on to classify EX-CAN 3*. Anne has descendants in the Monoak herd today, which carries 20 generations of home breeding. 1979 The Clintons showed Clintdale Maple Krista-Red EX-CAN to the first Red and White Elgin County Grand Champion. Krista was also Elgin’s first Excellent Red and White. Early 1990s Gerry Nooren’s Springday Climax Lois GP 2* became the new Lifetime Canadian Milk Champion with over 360,000 pounds milk at 20 years old. This record stood for a few years. 1993 Stenhouse Muir A J Topper EX-CAN-3E 13* was Reserve All-Canadian Senior 3-Year-Old in 1993. Bred by the Lyles of St. Thomas, this cow became the foundation of many generations of Excellents for her B.C. owners, Stanhope and Wedgewood. 1994 Purchased at a month old, Troybrook Lindy Lady lived at Monoak Farm for 18-and-a-half years and became one of only a few cows in Canada to achieve 10E status. 1994 – 1996 Howes BC Sassy EX 3* was All-Canadian Senior 3-Year-Old in 1994 and All-American 5-Year-Old in 1996.

surrounding counties. For a number of years in the 1960’s and 1970’s, the county also used to charter a plane out of London to go down to the States and tour farms there. One year, they flew to Quebec and Betty Jenkins (Ontario Dairy Princess in 1976 and a trained French teacher) acted as their interpreter. “Dad and I used to go on those trips together,” Doug says. His father, John, and his son, Jason, have also served as Presidents of the club, making the McKinlays a mainstay in Elgin County’s Holstein history. Another prominent Elgin County family whose Holstein history dates back to 1949 are the Dykxhoorns of Springfield. Lou Dykxhoorn immigrated to Canada from Holland with his mother, father and six siblings when he was 13. Life was hard at first and he remembers living in a chicken coop and earning $.20 per day working alongside his father on a farm east of Aylmer. A decade or so later, Lou purchased his own farm in Springfield. Silverridge was on the barn when he arrived and the name stuck. Today Lou’s son, Charlie, and grandson, Dan, run the three-time Master Breeder farm, cropping 470 acres and milking 135 cows.

www.ontario.holstein.ca

2007 Bred by the Dykxhoorns of Springfield, Silverridge Leduc Noleta EX-95 was Grand Champion at the Royal Winter Fair and named All-Canadian 5-Year-Old. 2009 Salem Goldwyn Theresa EX-94 was named 1st 3-Year-Old and Intermediate Champion at The Royal and All-Canadian for the Walkers two years after claiming All-Canadian 4-H Junior Yearling for John Walker III. Scott Walker’s 4-H Senior Calf, Sunspark Laramie Doobie, was also All-Canadian 4-H for him in 2007. 2011 – 2016 Eastside Gold Offering EX 93-2E-4* owned by the Vis Family of Maple Keys has captured Elgin County Grand Champion four times (2012, 2013, 2014 and 2016) as well as Honourable Mention All-Canadian 2011 and Reserve All-Ontario 2012. 2015 Silverridge September Rae GP-80 became the Canadian Champion for Fat as a 6-Year-Old with 1,337 kgs of Fat in one lactation for the Dykxhoorns.

“We had lots of support when we started out,” Lou says, “And with hard work and determination, we’ve hung in there.” The longest-standing membership to date belongs to the Jenkins family, whose patriarch James C. Jenkins took out his Holstein Canada membership in 1920 and joined the Elgin club shortly thereafter. Today his legacy continues through his grandsons Gord, Charlie (Monoak), Jim (Buttermoor) and David (Haldrey). Charlie and Betty’s son Michael makes up the fourth generation of Jenkins to be milking at Monoak. The Jenkins family is well-respected within Elgin County and beyond, known for producing generation after generation of homebred Excellents and helping to carry on the rich Holstein tradition in their county. Acting as Chair of the historical display for the club’s 100th Anniversary Celebration, Charlie Jenkins was an invaluable resource in providing facts and historical perspectives for this story and is hard at work gathering memorabilia to display at the centennial celebration to be held at Mistyglen Holsteins on July 8, 2017.

The Glory Days According to Jim Jenkins, Elgin was always a county that looked ahead. “We were a very progressive club,” he says. Elgin breeders are fortunate to have had two large-scale dairy auction sales arenas in their midst for many years, as well as access to a number of influential bulls via a breeding syndicate. In 1947 a group of 30 Elgin County Breeders formed the Elgin Holstein Syndicate, paying $200 each for the first few bulls. Breeding was managed by Bill Dufty of Union, prior to the unit amalgamating with Oxford and District Cattle Breeders in 1952.

on the modern day Holstein breed and was the maternal grandsire of Comestar Laurie Shiek. These two bulls were “game changers” long before the term was ever thought of. More recently the Dykxhoorns of Silverridge have put a number of high genomic bulls into A.I. and without a doubt are going to have a big effect on the breed as well.

In 1949 the Shore Sale Arena opened at Glanworth with the Shore family running this sale and export company for over fifty years. Monthly consignment sales and Dispersal Sales, as well as promotional sales made this “the place to be” and many record-breaking sales were Over the years, two major bulls with ties to the county made their auctioned here over the years. In 1981 the dispersal of their very own mark on the breed: King Tortilla Acme Extra and Fairlea Royal Mark Shore Farms Ltd. was held here, with the top cow fetching $31,500. (VG-Extra). King Tortilla Acme was bred in 1924 by the Innes family In 1962, Walker Dairy Sales began serving dairy farmers in Elgin of City View and purchased as a 6-Year-Old by Eugene Sweet of County and beyond. Its founder, John Walker Sr. got his start dealing Sweetholm in Belmont. He has had a huge influence on the breed, in horses and heifers in the 1950s and fared well enough to buy the siring daughters with both show style and production. Many of his top Aylmer Sale Barn in 1958. He sold it, however, soon after and began daughters were purchased as foundation stock by prominent breeders holding monthly sales at his own farm in Elgin County and later at and he left some great daughters at Sweetholm before being sold and a location up the road from his farm. He then got into the export going on to produce the All-American Get of Sire. It is safe to say he is business, selling to the USA and later to Mexico, Cuba, Asia and found in the family tree of almost every modern day Holstein. Europe. Today, three generations of the Walker family work together Fairlea Royal Mark VG-Extra, bred by the Martin Bros. of St. Thomas, to manage this successful sales barn that has become a longstanding was in service at W.O.B.I for a number of years in the 1960s and tradition in rural Southwestern Ontario. In the early 1930s Elgin breeders began showing Holsteins at Aylmer Fair. Up until 1966 when a cattle barn was built, the show took place at one end of the arena and the cows were stabled at the opposite end. In the early days, the show was open and saw breeders coming from Middlesex and Oxford counties to compete, with successful showmen moving on to a show at Woodstock thereafter. Many Elgin breeders also showed at the Western Ontario Championship Show in London each year, which continued into the 1990s. Betty Pake’s family has farmed under the Pavilla prefix since 1966 and some of her fondest memories date back to when they first started to show. Back then, she says, all dairy breeds were stabled in the barn at the same time, which took place over two days. Up until the 1970s, an inter-breed udder competition was also held and it took place at the end of the Holstein Show. Betty recalls one show back in the 1970s when they stayed overnight to mind the cows and she had her first-born beside her in a baby buggy! They took a few years off when they were raising their young family but got back involved when their kids became involved in 4-H. Today, Betty and Walt’s youngest granddaughter can’t wait until she can show too! In addition to the yearly show in the summer and their banquet in February, Elgin breeders come together as a group a number of times a year. They hold an Annual Meeting each January to plan for the coming year and meet again in April for their Breeders’ Cup Competition. The county has held the competition for the past six years and breeders view it as much as an opportunity to socialize with their fellow dairymen (they get together at Gerald Schippers at night for the presentations) as they do to get an unbiased evaluation of their animals. “Angela [Howard] takes pictures of all the cows and owners all day and puts a lot of work into putting together a nice slideshow for us,” says Charlie Jenkins, who has taken part for several years. “She makes it so special for everyone and we appreciate it so much!”

approved, every motion had a mover, seconder, most people wouldn’t even think of doing it that way today!” John had lost an arm in a corn picker accident, but that didn’t stop him from taking meticulous minutes at the club’s annual meeting each year. Many on the club will remember one year when John stood to read a particularly long set of minutes. “Johnny’s getting along in years and he had these minutes, all wrote out, detail for detail, who said what, on and on we go. Well, Kenny Zimmer, who was on as a Director at the time, stands up and says, ‘Boy oh boy that’s an awful lot of writing for a guy with one arm!’” “I knew [Ken] would fit in right then!” Steve says. “We still refer to that to this day!”

“Presidents come and presidents go, but secretaries stay forever - and we’ve had some good ones.” — Steve Walters John was a much-loved club secretary for 34 years and Ken took over for him in 1995. Organized, detail-oriented and quick-witted, Ken is described by his club as a tremendous secretary and every bit as capable as his predecessor. When members of the Elgin County Holstein Club meet to commemorate 100 years in July, there’s no doubt stories will be retold, laughs will be shared and milestones will be marked. There will be great cows to view at Mistyglen, a fun auction with a calf donated by Monoak and, of course, a great meal. But most importantly, there will be a group of people whose proud Holstein past has led to this very moment. And whose passion, dedication and stick-together attitude will see them into the next 100 years.

Active Club The relationship Angela has with Elgin breeders is a special one and after 24 years as their field rep, she considers many close friends. “They’re such a sweet group of people and it’s been an absolute privilege to work with them over the years,” she says. “They’re also extremely active and have had some strong leaders that have kept things running smoothly.” Golf days, curling bonspiels and family socials in Elgin all draw large crowds, and Steve Walters, who no longer milks cows but still sells hay and straw throughout the county and beyond, agrees with Angela: “Somehow if you run a good organization, people will stick with you.” “Presidents come and presidents go,” he adds, referring to the one-year terms they serve. “But secretaries stay forever - and we’ve had some good ones.” Steve remembers fondly the way John Coulter ran the club. “John made sure everything was done by the letter of the law! Everything was written down, documented, minutes were read,

Pavia Holsteins A 51 year Holstein Club Member, proud of breeding homebred “black & whites”!

Our History started with James C. Jenkins who acquired two purebred Holstein heifers in 1922 in exchange for stud fees for his draft stallion. The “Haldrey” prefix was established by James’ son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Audrey, in 1960. They sold embryos and cattle to over 40 countries world-wide and were the first Holstein breeders to use commercial IVF. With deep cow families and a popular sire, Haldrey Leadership (VG-Extra), Haldrey Farms Ltd. earned a Master Breeder Shield in 1997. In 1998, the third generation, Dave & Maureen began their Holstein History here with their children, Evan and Maggie. Sadly, in March 2014, Maggie passed away after a brief battle with childhood cancer. The herd was dispersed in April 2015, but with the Ontario Holstein Junior Show Program, the fourth generation of Jenkins is now involved with cattle through Evan Jenkins and his Montebello Holsteins. We are proud and thankful to be part of a Century of Holstein History here in Elgin County and look forward to watching the future unfold!

Congratulations to the Elgin County Holstein Club on its 100th Anniversary!

Above photos l to r: President Hank Hazeleger and his wife, Nancy, congratulate 2x Master Breeders, Embrdale Farms (l to r: Cathy Stockdale with granddaughter Kaylee, Erin Warwick and Brett Stockdale); this year’s fun auction raised $9,470 thanks to the wonderful prizes donated; 11 Ontario Master Breeders were recognized at this year’s banquet. The 35th Annual Ontario Holstein Branch AGM took place from February 21-22 at the Best Western in Brantford, Ontario and what a meeting it was! Nine area farms opened their doors for tours on day one and the mild weather helped attract steady crowds throughout the day. Whether a brand new robotic facility or well-kept original tie-stall barn, the quality of cattle and the hospitality extended to visitors was excellent across the board. Each stop offered something new to see, not to mention an abundance of beverages and goodies to sustain close to 350 tour goers throughout the day. After a full day of tours, Tuesday evening was dedicated to honouring Ontario’s 11 newest Master Breeders. EastGen graciously hosted the Wine & Cheese event and a good crowd gathered to enjoy the evening’s program. Wentworth’s James Cranston and Brant’s Pam Charlton congratulated Ontario’s 11 Master Breeders and provided a short commentary and slideshow on each of their respective operations. To change things up this year, the Ontario Dairy Women’s Achievement Award was also presented on the Tuesday evening. This year’s deserving recipient was Janet Ringelberg. Selection Committee Chairman Heather Parkin spoke of Janet’s passion for her family, community and the dairy industry, and her long list of volunteer pursuits, which make her an inspiration to many young women in the industry today. Past recipients were on hand to congratulate Janet and present her with a framed print and a bouquet of flowers. Next the Fun Auction was kicked off, complete with an array of donated items to suit a variety of tastes and price ranges. Auctioneers Doug Karn and Phil Watson worked their way through 28 lots, providing a good dose of laughter and generating plenty of friendly competition between bidders. Top-selling items included tickets to see the Maple Leafs play the Detroit Red Wings (donated by the Waterloo County Holstein Club

and purchased by Clarence Markus), two ABC paintings (donated by Bert Stewart and purchased by Rae Stadder and Gerald Schipper) and a Ted Burnside original acrylic painting (donated by Ted Burnside and purchased for the second consecutive year by Sean O’Connor). The Fun Auction raised a total of $9,470, which will go to support the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund. On Wednesday morning, Branch President Hank Hazeleger opened up the meeting and spoke about our ever-changing dairy industry. He admitted that although the Branch has faced its fair share of challenges in the last year, a positive attitude and a hardworking and committed staff have ensured that service continues at the level our members have come to expect. He thanked staff at Holstein Canada for their support, as well as the Ontario membership for their patience, during this time of transition. Hank then introduced the new Directors who will be replacing him and Past President Ian Fraser. Cole Verburg of Athens will fill the Eastern Director’s spot and Hans Pfister of Mitchell will replace Hank as a Director in the West. Interim General Manager Adrian Vander Wielen also spoke of the challenges the Branch has faced as a result of being down one team member for many months. He, too, thanked staff for their efforts and commended the team for managing to achieve a great deal of success under extenuating circumstances. Sandy O’Hara presented the 2016 audited statement showing an operational deficit of $87,655. After including the investment portfolio, the Branch showed a loss of $55,760. The Membership reappointed BDO, LLP Chartered Accountants and Advisors as auditors for 2017. Chairperson of the Resolutions Committee, Dave Johnston, presented four resolutions to the membership. The first resolution, brought forth

by the Ontario Judges’ Committee, requested the formation of a National Judges’ Committee comprised of eight committee members. The second and third resolutions, brought forth by the Durham County Holstein Club, called for greater accuracy and transparency on all Holstein Canada membership votes and the development of a printable cow sign for use on farm and at shows. The fourth and final resolution, brought forth by the Lambton County Holstein Club, asked for an adjustment in the number of Master Breeder shields that are awarded in each registration category. All four resolutions were carried. Following the resolutions, National President Robert Chabot brought greetings on behalf of Holstein Canada. CEO Ann Louise Carson congratulated Ontario members on a great year and noted that while registrations were up one per cent across Canada, they were up two per cent in Ontario. 5,323 herd visits were made and 92,721 cows were classified in our province, up 10 per cent from last year. Across Canada Genomic Testing was up nine per cent, while in Ontario it was down three per cent. Ann Louise discussed some areas of focus for this year, including adjustments to the Herd Book software to automate processes, enhance reports and save paper and changes to the way certificates are produced. She also touched on ProAction and the value it adds to our clients and networks.

Eastern Ontario Field Rep Kris MacLeod presented an interesting slideshow of the trip he accompanied the 2016 Dairy Youth Award winners on to World Dairy Expo. Recipients John Werry, Laura Schuurman, Derek Van Dieten and Jason Gould all gave excellent presentations of their respective operations and thanked the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund and Ontario Holstein for making the trip possible. The meeting wrapped up with Hank Hazeleger receiving a gift in appreciation for his term as President and Ian Fraser being presented with his Past-President pin. In the ‘Speak your Mind’ session, Brian Coleman encouraged the Ontario Holstein Board of Directors to evaluate and consider all options with regards to staffing the Branch to most efficiently meet member needs. To close the meeting, Dave Johnston invited everyone to attend the 2018 Ontario Branch Annual Meeting to be held in Stratford, Ontario, hosted by the Perth County Holstein Club.

Just before lunch was served, Bosdale Farms was presented with a plaque to commemorate their win in The Link’s 2016 Heart of the Herd competition with Bosdale Outside Portrait. Following a few short words from lunch sponsor, Ayr Farmers Mutual Insurance Co., a delicious lunch was enjoyed by all.

After lunch, the crowd was treated to a humorous talk by motivational speaker Eleanor Wood. Hailing from nearby Troy, Ontario, Eleanor spoke of the lighter side of rural life and reminded members that there’s “not a lot of room in farming for negative thinking.” She spoke of the importance of getting a good laugh – at least one – every day and encouraged those in attendance to count their blessings and be thankful for what – and whom – they have in their lives every day. Appreciating people is key, Eleanor stressed, and judging by the standing ovation she received following her speech, members truly appreciated her entertaining and thoughtprovoking talk that day. Adrian Vander Wielen named the 2016 AllOntario winners, sponsored this year by Canadian Livestock Photography, Quality Seeds and Select Sires Genervations. The Gay Lea Production Awards for Highest Fat and Protein in Ontario followed, with three of the awards won by Andy Senn of St. Bernardin, Ontario, two by Brabantdale Farms Ltd. of Navan, Ontario and one by Albadon Farms Ltd. in Teeswater, Ontario.

ONTARIO’S 2016

MASTER BREEDERS

The Master Breeder Shield is the most coveted award presented annually by Holstein Canada. This year, 20 breeders from across Canada were designated with the honour, with 11 of them coming from Ontario. Congratulations to the 2016 honourees!

CARLDOT - Along with part-time help on his farm, Larry milks 70 cows and crops 375 acres of hay, wheat, oats, soybeans and corn. He recently built a new free-stall barn with a robot and moved the cows in last November, with great results to date. He encourages those starting out to surround themselves with positive people who share your passion to succeed and use all tools available to you. Buying the best semen you can afford, adding new bloodlines when possible and selecting cows from good cow families will put you on the right track as well. Following two previous Master Breeder wins in 1988 and 2000, Larry wishes to thank all of the people who have worked for him over the years. “It’s been a lot of fun, a great learning experience and I look forward to the future!”

CLAYNOOK - Dennis & Betty Ann, Wayne & Mary and their son, Marcus, milk over 200 cows in a tiestall barn and crop a total of 670 acres of corn, alfalfa, wheat and soybeans. Running an operation of this scale takes a whole team and the Waglers acknowledge their family, neighbours and staff to their banker, vet, feed, AI and ET companies for the important roles they have played. Staying true to their goal of breeding cow families with index and taking calculated risks has led to the Wagler’s success. They stress the importance of doing one’s homework when purchasing animals and paying attention to IE flush history, marketability, genomic numbers DGV, LPI, TPI and RZG. “Stay true to your breeding values and stand your ground in order to achieve your goals.”

DONNANVIEW - Along with their three children, Katie, Brent and Greg, and full-time employee Ewan MacMillan, the Donnans milk 70 cows in a tie-stall barn and run 450 acres of hay and corn. They’ve won some of Holstein Canada’s highest awards and are thankful to have had the opportunity to work with some unforgettable cows over the years. Using good bulls and administering above-average cow care has brought the Donnans their success. In addition, their ability to persevere and never give up helped them through times of adversity. Their advice to young breeders starting out is to drive out the laneway and go to farms that do a great job. Ask lots of questions and never stop increasing your dairy knowledge. EMBRDALE - David & Cathy Stockdale, along with their sons, Brett (and partner Erin), Steven (and partner Kelsey), Cameron (and partner Emily) and daughter Rebecca, milk 65 cows three times daily in a tie-stall barn. David and Cathy are justifiably proud of their own family, but also of the cow families they have worked so hard to build for generations. They are proud of the fact that they have not only bred great cows, but that they have marketed cows that have gone on to do well for others. The key to their success is using higher type bulls and milking three times per day, which they’ve done since December of 1989. As for their words of wisdom for others: work hard and be persistent.

the

Link SPRiNG 2017

FRADON - For Frank and Don Donkers, this award is a nod to the hard work they’ve put in over the years breeding cow families that are recognized the world over. The brothers are proud of their sons Luke (Don’s son) and Jimmy (Frank’s son) who have worked hard to establish themselves as successful dairy farmers and carry on the Donker’s dairy legacy with pride. Frank and Don split their operation in 2014 in order to bring their sons into the operation. Don and Luke now operate under the Rose Vega prefix and milk 65 cows just outside of Branchton at the home farm. Frank and Jimmy kept the Fradon prefix and moved their 65 milking cows to a renovated free-stall pack barn near Woodstock. Using cow families with proven pedigrees and taking advantage of niche markets has led to Fradon’s notoriety and working as a team with future growth in mind is a game plan that paid off. www.ontario.holstein.ca

HAANVIEW - John and Bonnie den Haan milk 65 cows in a tie-stall barn and crop 450 acres of alfalfa, corn, soybeans and barley. The family’s deep commitment to the farm and strong work ethic has been key to their success. Cow families at Haanview have been built on longevity and nothing makes the den Haans happier than milking a ten-year-old cow with an udder that will still classify as Excellent. From the start, calves are treated as though they have the potential to become lifetime production winners and the results speak for themselves. Days before the den Haans were announced as Master Breeders, their herd was rolled into a corporation to allow the next generation to take ownership. According to John and Bonnie, “It makes passing the reins over so much sweeter and easier.”

HESSHOLM - Allan milks 55 cows in a tie-stall barn. His oldest son, Cassidy, works full-time on the farm while his younger son, Parker, helps out after school and on weekends. Allan’s brother, Don, works for ABS and helps advise on sire selection. The Hess family grows 500 acres of corn, soyabeans, hay and pasture. They’re most proud of the many long-time production awards they’ve earned over the years, as well as their practice of breeding for type, which has worked in their favour. Breeding for type has been key to the Hess’s success and still allows for good milk production and longevity. Although Allan has been home, farming full-time for the past 21 years, he wishes to acknowledge the efforts of his late father, John, and late brother, David, both of whom shared the dream of becoming Master Breeders.

KINGSWAY - For Gord and Pauline McMillan of Kingsway Farms, having a family farm where everyone can work together is the greatest source of their pride. Their children, Morgon, Emma and Ethan are all involved in the operation and the family says one key to their success has been that everyone is on the same page in terms of the type of cows they want to have in their herd. The McMillans milk 80 cows in a tie-stall barn in Hastings, Ontario. They farm 750 acres of corn, soyabeans, wheat and hay and reserve an additional 20 acres for pasture. Winning this Master Breeder shield is a testament to the family’s balanced breeding philosophy and they say that their success in both showing and breeding has allowed them to market many notable cattle and embryos over the years.

LOCHDALE - For the MacMillan family, becoming Master Breeders is a dream come true! The attainment of the award is a true family effort and serves as a benchmark for the level of success their herd has achieved. David, Ann Marie and Andrew MacMillan milk 60 cows in a tie-stall barn with a bedding pack for heifers. They grow 320 acres of alfalfa, corn, soybeans and wheat. The key to their success has been their willingness to improve in all areas. When making any big decisions over the years, the family always took the time to plan carefully and weren’t afraid to seek advice from people whose opinions they respected. This seasoned advice has, in part, helped them achieve a high-scoring herd of cows with great production that can also compete in the show ring.

WEBBVIEW - For Ian and Christina Pettey, receiving a Master Breeder shield is a tremendous achievement they have been working towards since they first started in partnership with Christina’s father, Jim Webb, and since he received his first Master Breeder shield in 2000. As the 6th generation at Webb View Farms, Christina, her husband Ian and their 5-year-old son, Austin, milk 77 cows in a tie-stall barn and crop 700 acres (550 owned) of high moisture corn silage, wheat and hay. Jim retired in 2012 but Ian and Christina are grateful to have had the opportunity to breed great cows from the foundation he developed and live out their dream. They’re also grateful for their extended families and say without their support, none of this would have been possible.

MEADOWBLOOM - For Paul and Marilyn Leis, receiving their Master Breeder award is a true honour and privilege. They are thrilled to be recognized for the hard work, dedication and attention to detail they have put into their family farm in the last 26 years. Along with their children, Brandon and Kristin, Paul and Marilyn milk 50 cows in a free-stall robot barn they built last fall. They crop 250 acres of hay, soybeans, winter wheat, mixed grains and corn. Their homebred herd has been continually improved and developed through each generation, a goal they have had from the start, and the passion they have for each individual cow in the barn has been key to their success. They would like to thank Paul’s Aunt Betty and Uncle Joe Grove for providing them with the opportunity to purchase their farm.

Branch News

Introducing the 2017-2018 Board of Directors

Cole Verburg named new Director for Eastern Ontario Hailing from Athens, Ontario, Cole farms with his dad, John, and brother, Ian, under the Roosburg prefix and milks 100 cows in a free-stall robot barn. After the family’s original barn was lost to a fire in January of 2013, the Verburgs rebuilt for the future and began milking in their state-of-the-art robot barn the next year. Cows are milked with a twobox GEA MIone robot and bedded on shavings. In addition to becoming part of the Ontario Holstein Board in February, Cole is Secretary of the Eastern Ontario Invitational Show (formerly the Tri-County Show) and is involved in the Leeds-Grenville Holstein Club. As Past President, some of his fondest memories include participating in the Branch’s AGM and District Tours when they were in his area and meeting fellow dairymen from across the province. He appreciates what the Branch stands for and looks forward to working with his fellow Board members to instill a passion for the breed that he believes is essential to dairy farmers today.

Hans Pfister named new Director for Western Ontario Hans and his wife, Marlise, and children, Sandra, Marco and Martina, immigrated to Canada from Switzerland in 1991 and began farming near Mitchell, Ontario, under the Ulmar prefix. They milk 80 cows in the three-row free-stall barn they built when they first arrived. In 25 years, Hans says he has learned a lot from great Canadian farmers and feels that becoming Holstein members all those years ago helped his family’s farm progress to where it is today. Hans’ main focus on the farm is on crops and feeding while Marco manages the herd. Along with Hans’ wife and daughter-in-law, Ashley Hall, they take care of the day-to-day operation of the farm and it brings him great pride to see everyone working together to make the farm successful. He’s also grateful for the hard work his daughters put into the farm growing up. After spending 10 years as a Director on the Perth County Holstein Club and currently volunteering on the Milk Committee, joining the Branch’s Board of Directors was a logical step for Hans. With Marco at home, Hans feels he’s in a position to contribute and looks forward to guiding the Branch in the right direction for the next generation of Holstein Breeders. Socializing is important to Hans and he takes every opportunity to have fun and celebrate the hard work they complete on the farm. He enjoys traveling and learning about new cultures and agricultural sectors and has visited Brazil and Argentina, with New Zealand next on his list. Besides keeping active on the farm, swimming, and dancing, Hans says taking time for the people he loves is what keeps him lively and happy. www.ontario.holstein.ca

Cole has been married to Anjela for the past 13 years and together they have four children: Ayva (11), Elias (9), Anneke (7) and Ellienne (3). He is a Level 1 Judge and enjoys taking a few head out to his County Show each year. In his free time, Cole loves to play guitar and sing and he regularly leads worship at his church. He keeps busy as a Cadet Counselor for boys ages nine to 12 and coaches the Senior Soccer Team and the Robotic Team at his children’s school.

Janet was presented with the award at the Branch’s recent AGM. Heather Parkin’s speech introducing Janet as this year’s winner is printed below. The Dairy Woman Service Award was first developed in 2011, with the intention of recognizing women in this business for their efforts to develop and maintain organizations which would support this rural way of life. The award honours someone who manages to find the balance between the passion for this business, the dedication she has for her family and the spirit to serve others within her community. This is not always an easy feat, but our winner seems to make it all work. Holstein Canada’s New Herd Enrollment Program Rocroft Farms, UXBRIDGE, ON

BY ADRIAN VANDER WIELEN

ROGER, JACKIE AND JASON FEASBY OF ROCROFT FARMS HAVE LIVED THROUGH SOME UNFORTUNATE TIMES ON THEIR FARM IN UXBRIDGE,ON DUE TO STRAY VOLTAGE. AFTER UPGRADING SERVICE WIRES AND SEEING SOME GRADUAL HERD IMPROVEMENTS AS A RESULT, THEY WERE ABLE TO MAKE USE OF HOLSTEIN CANADA’S RE-ENROLLMENT PROGRAM. TODAY THEIR 350-COW HERD IS REGISTERED, CLASSIFIED AND THRIVING AS IT OUGHT TO BE.

A

Although members of Holstein Canada for over 20 years, Roger and Jackie Feasby and their son Jason have had their fair share of poor luck in recent years. For many years, herd productivity was improving as expected, allowing the family to more than double its herd size since they first began farming in 1974. The farm’s quota base was also on a steady incline. Then, in early 2013, everything changed. The herd’s performance took a rather shocking downturn, cow behavior changed, productivity dropped, reproductive rates plummeted and the general health of the herd decreased. This was all due to one silent culprit: unhealthy levels of ground current. After 18 months of frustration trying to deal with Ontario Hydro for solutions and learning a lot about ground current, while at the same time trying to meet their quota obligations and manage a challenging herd, registration and classification was dropped. During the next two-year period, over half of the herd was replaced with purchased animals. Cow families that were being established were essentially ruined. Finally after trying many unsuccessful solutions, service wires were upgraded and productivity slowly improved. Herd records were maintained using Dairy Comp 305, which has each individual animal’s information, including identification with a photo, entry into the herd (purchased cows), birthdate, sire and dam and all breeding and subsequent calving information. “Holstein Canada (HAC) was very easy to work with to get all animals transferred and registrations caught up with the support of Dairy Comp and DHI. Having our animals in the HAC database ties in well with CQM, ProAction and our efforts to once again manage the herd and go forward,” says Jason.

www.ontario.holstein.ca

The Feasby’s care deeply about their animals and the highest level of attention is given from day one. They maintain a comfortable, well-bedded airy calf nursery to grow heifers and strive for calving by 24 months or less. Cows are later housed in retrofitted free-stall housing (previously a tiestall). Roger and Jason continue to make small adjustments to improve the health and well-being of their herd. Individual identification is the cornerstone of managing herd performance and according to the Feasby’s, it’s once again fun to farm and tend to their 350 Holsteins on a daily basis.

Roger and Jason Feasby have come a long way since they first started experiencing stray voltage-related issues in 2013. Holstein Canada’s Re-enrollment program has helped to get them back on track. PHOTO BY ADRIAN VANDER WIELEN.

Holstein Youth Thunder Bay native makes sen$e of things in Madison

EYBS Representatives Selected Congratulations to Vanessa Crowley of Peterborough and Trent Jones of Woodstock, both of whom will be representing Ontario at this year’s European Young Breeders School from August 30 to September 3 in Belgium.

BY ANDREW BREKVELD As a working 22-year old always eager to learn more about the dairy industry, I decided to sign up for Dairy Sen$e last year. In this amazing program held at the University of Guelph, we were able to learn more about financials, herd management, employee management and much more. After gaining knowledge from farm tours and many informative speakers, we were given the challenge of finding problems in a particular farming scenario and presenting solutions to a panel of judges. I had the great privilege of working with Victoria Eastman, Shaelyn Prins and Matt van Veen, and together we were able to deliver a great presentation that won us a trip to World Dairy Expo in the fall!

Vanessa grew up at Crovalley Holsteins and has been heavily involved in 4-H. The program has taught her necessary life skills including networking, public speaking and leadership, as well as dairy-specific skills such as clipping, which she looks forward to using during her upcoming trip to EYBS. Vanessa has also learned how to collaborate effectively in a team setting, having served for four years (including one as President) on the University of Guelph’s College Royal Committee. While representing Ontario abroad, she looks forward to making new friends and learning about the dairy industry in Europe.

Attending World Dairy Expo in Madison WI is a great opportunity that I would recommend to any person in the dairy industry. The quality of cows shown in the ring is exceptional and there is a very large tradeshow for all to enjoy. We had the great experience of riding on the Floradale Feed Mill bus, which allowed us to enjoy the company of some fellow dairy farmers and travel with them to farms in the United States. During the farm tours, we gained a good understanding of what it’s like to farm south of the border. My travel to both Dairy Sen$e and World Dairy Expo was assisted by the Northern Travel Grant provided by the Ontario Holstein Branch. This grant provides those in Northern Ontario to receive financial assistance when travelling to Southern Ontario for events such as Dairy Sen$e, the Ontario Holsteins AGM, Judging Schools, Regional Shows and more! Many thanks to the Ontario Holstein Branch as well as all those involved in the Dairy Sen$e Program. The event has increased my knowledge and skills and allowed me to use them in a practical way that will help me to run a successful dairy business in the future!

Trent has been involved in 4-H for many years and has acquired some valuable skills during this time including public speaking, organization and leadership, which he has used to his advantage while preparing for shows. For the past five years he has clipped and prepared his own 4-H heifer, thankful for the skills he has learned from his grandfather Frank Meisner and mentors like Barry Quickfall and Marty Hazeleger. Trent values team work and believes in a model in which everyone contributes according to their area of strength to meet the goal in sight. Holstein Youth

Geoff Carberry: Beyond the Skyline

BY AVA DONER

LEADERSHIP SKILLS, DETERMINATION AND HARD WORK HAVE SET GEOFF CARBERRY ON THE RIGHT PATH IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY. AS A GRADUATE OF THE 4-H PROGRAM AND A STUDENT AT RIDGETOWN COLLEGE, HE HAS ACQUIRED THE SKILLS TO BECOME A SUCCESSFUL FOURTH-GENERATION DAIRY FARMER IN PEEL COUNTY.

G

Geoff was raised on his parents’ dairy farm in Caledon, Ontario, just outside of the heart of downtown Toronto. Rick and Carolynn Carberry own and operate the aptly-named Skyline Holsteins, an 830acre farm that milks 75 cows in a tie-stall facility and strives for deeppedigreed Holsteins with good milk components. Geoff has always been interested in cows and is proud of the herd’s current classification of 16 EX, 72 VG and 15 GP.

As a young and eager nineyear-old, Geoff began his showing career in the Pre4-H Class at the Bolton Fair. Later, as an active member within his dairy club, Geoff took a leadership role to share his knowledge with younger members. Over the years, Skyline Holsteins has generously donated the use of 4-H calves to members who do not live Geoff, at home on the farm with his faithful friend, on dairy farms and Geoff Cooper. PHOTO SUBMITTED. takes great pride in being involved in the management of these heifers. Throughout the show season, Geoff tends to his animals by washing them daily, keeping them clipped and constantly blowing up their toplines. Lindsay Bebbington, Geoff’s 4-H leader, says Geoff’s passion for the dairy industry is something she has enjoyed watching grow each year. “His knowledge of the dairy industry is extensive,” she says, “and he has been an asset to our club and show teams, assisting in teaching the younger members everything from judging and fitting to filling their project on show day.” Throughout Geoff’s illustrious 4-H career, he represented Peel County at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic eight times. His favourite 4-H story features Quality Braxton Finess VG-88, the first calf he owned by himself under his Hardcore Holsteins prefix. In 2013, Geoff attended York Region’s 100th Anniversary for a fun night of celebration and socialization with fellow dairy breeders. Little did he know he would end up bidding on (and winning) the September calf that was donated by Quality Holsteins. Geoff had a great year showing Finess, but shortly after preparations began for the Royal Winter Fair, she sprained her leg and he wasn’t sure if he was going to be able to show her. Luckily, she recovered quickly and Geoff was able to take her to the Classic, resulting in a weekend he won’t soon forget. This was the first time he made the cut in showmanship at the Classic, where he went on to eventually place 7th in Senior Showmanship and 8th in Conformation. Finess continued her show career in 2014 as a Senior Yearling where

she captured 1st place at both Dufferin-Wellington and Halton-Peel. Geoff, too, continued to succeed and captured an impressive 3rd and 6th place in showmanship at the Classic in 2014 and 2015. Geoff’s passion for high-type animals, along with his previous experience on his family’s dairy farm, garnered him an opportunity to work as a co-op student for Quality Holsteins when he was in Grade 11. After finishing morning chores at home, Geoff would make the 15-minute drive to Quality to help them throughout the day with bedding up stalls, clipping and any other task that needed to be completed before returning to his home farm for night chores. Although this meant putting in long days, Geoff is extremely thankful for the time he spent at Quality as it opened up many opportunities for him. “My time spent at Quality was an amazing experience,” says Geoff, who worked for the Eksteins at Autumn Opportunity four times and the Royal Winter Fair twice. “It was an opportunity to learn from very knowledgeable people along working with some of the best cows in North America.” Currently Geoff is enrolled at the University of Guelph, Ridgetown Campus working toward a diploma in Agriculture. He aspires to take what he learns at school and bring it back to the home farm he eventually plans take over with his older brother, Kyle. In the near future, Skyline Holsteins plans to buy an ongoing operation or build a free-stall operation due to the urban development in their current location. Regardless of where they end up, Geoff says their goal is “stay engaged and remain interacting with our cows.” The next few years will no doubt be a time of change and excitement for the Carberry family, but with Geoff’s knowledge, determination and ambition, the future of the farm is bright. the

2017 Judges

Workshops

In 2016, the Ontario Judges Committee made significant changes to its judging program. The committee’s first goal was to hold an annual Judge’s Workshop for Ontario judges to hone their skills and discuss current topics in a classroom setting. That was done for the first time in early 2016, and this year again, two workshops were held across the province. Selby Hall played host to the East and East-Central District on February 8, and on February 17, the judges from Western and West Central Ontario met at Semex in Guelph. In total, over 120 individuals participated in the daylong events. Topics included a review of the overall Judges Program, including its levels and lists; a reasons evaluation by accomplished judges; a class of cows to judge and training in Showmanship. Also covered at the workshops was an update on show ethics and a panel on potential changes to the All-Ontario program.

Ralph, Jeff & Tim LeRoy Farm: Yorellea Farms Herd Size: 90 Milking Operation Type: 6-Row Perimeter Feeding Free-stall, 2 Robots Location: St. Eugene, ON (Prescott County) 1. What is your family’s history with Holsteins?

We have always had purebred Holsteins on our farm for as long as we can remember. The dairy side wasn’t always the main focus of the farm, but in 1967, we started our prefix and began registering the herd with it. We were milking 20 cows at that time and started milk recording. In the late 70s we began to classify the herd to help with genetic progress. In 1979 we built our first free-stall barn and dairy became our main focus.

rates in our calves and heifers which has led to better classification and higher milk production in our 2-Year-olds. We are very pleased with the results the herd is achieving from all of these facility improvements.

8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why?

We have one daughter from Ipod finishing her third lactation with 41,000 kg lifetime milk who is classified VG. Other daughters include a Windbrook who calved in March, two heifers from a flush to Goldwyn and a High Octane Senior Calf. Ipod is a prime example of the ideal cow we strive to breed and we hope to see her daughters follow in her footsteps!

sell any of the embryos. We implant the embryos into our own heifers or lower end cows to improve the herd.

12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best?

High type with a good mammary system seems to always sell best here. Since being in the new barn, a lot of buyers come in looking for young robot-trained cows. They always look at mammary systemsw first, then good feet and legs for mobility. These are important traits for a robotic operation.

We are very proud of the continuous progression we’ve seen in our farm over the years. Being able to keep moving forward, expanding the herd 13. 7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be?

In 2013 we built a new robotic free-stall barn and renovated the old free-stall barn to house calves and heifers. Improved cow comfort in the new barn has benefitted the overall health of the herd, which resulted in a tremendous increase in milk production and greater longevity. Calves are now raised in small groups and fed by an automatic feeder while heifers are grouped by age in free-stalls. We have seen increased growth

14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation?

We strive to do everything the best we can on a daily basis. Cows like routine so we keep our barn schedule as consistent as possible. Our new facilities have allowed us more time to focus on the cows and take better care of the herd. We harvest top-quality forages to feed the cows a consistent ration year-round. www.ontario.holstein.ca
