NEW CHALLENGES AND NEW OPPORTUNITIES

As I sit on my porch listening to the long-awaited sounds of spring, I can’t help but feel excited about the possibilities of what is to come for Holstein Ontario and its members. It has been a long winter and the warmth and sunshine can’t come soon enough. Spring is always a time of renewal and new possibilities and what better season than now to start my time here at Holstein Ontario! The last two years have been challenging in many ways and so many things have changed over that time but here we remain - ready to take on new challenges and new opportunities. With health measures and restrictions finally lifting, we look forward to getting back out there to connect with you, the members. As we move forward with plans for the traditional events and activities we have offered in the past, this year will be a time to assess, evaluate and explore those events and programs and look for new ideas and opportunities to reach more of you across the province. You each have different priorities, interests and challenges and we need to find ways to engage everyone in our activities. Going forward, you will see some different faces representing Holstein Ontario as new staff and new directors come on board. They are keen to hear and learn from you, so please reach out and share your thoughts and ideas; collaboration brings out the best in all we do, and together, we can do great things! I would like to thank everyone, near and far, who has reached out with phone calls, emails and messages welcoming me to Holstein Ontario and offering assistance and words of encouragement. I can’t wait to get out there and see you all this summer across the province at shows and events, starting with our Summer Social and Branch Anniversary Celebration, June 22 & 23, in Elora. LOOKING FORWARD TO A TREMENDOUS 2022!

I am honoured to have been elected President of Holstein Ontario for the 2022-23 year. For those that don’t know me, I farm in Brant-Wentworth, where my parents and I milk 75 cows in a compost pack barn under the Cranholme prefix. In a time of change and transition for the Branch, I would like to thank Merina and Mary for their years of work and contributions to the Branch. I have enjoyed working with you and you both will be missed. I am also very excited to have Pam Charlton on board as our new GM. Her ideas and positive attitude will have a big role in shaping the success of the Branch going forward. Heading into spring and summer, I am looking forward to a full slate of junior and county shows, farm tours, and of course, the Holstein Ontario Summer Social in Elora on June 22 and 23! As we emerge from a pandemic that upended normalcy for the last two years, and face uncertainty due to global conflict, inflation, and political division, I feel it’s important to take time to enjoy the small moments that happen in a day: a sunrise, something funny your child said, or just a moment spent watching heifers eat hay. It’s ok to take a moment and breathe. Looking forward to a tremendous 2022,

Congratulations to Cathy Stockdale, appearing above, left, who was a recipient of 4-H’s distinguished Arbor Award. Cathy was recently recognized at 4-H Ontario’s Volunteer Conference and Annual Meeting in Richmond Hill, Ont. She farms with her husband, David, under the Embrdale Farms prefix in AsphodelNorwood and has been a volunteer for close to 30 years. Other winners presented with the honour included Raymond Wilson, Hamilton-Wentworth and Janet Campbell, Chatham-Kent. To be eligible for the award, 4-H Ontario volunteers must be nominated by their local 4-H Association. GO KNIGHTS GO!

On Wednesday March 2, 2022, Holstein club members from Perth, Huron, Middlesex, and Oxford counties made their way to the Budweiser Gardens to watch the London Knights face off against league rivals, the Guelph Storm. “It was a great game, and well worth the price of admission for three solid periods of hockey, followed by overtime and a shootout!” says Perth County Club Director Dave Van Den Tempel. Holstein Ontario holds 40th Annual General Meeting

Although we had high hopes of holding our Annual General Meeting in person at the newly renovated GrandWay Events Center in Elora this year, the COVID-19 pandemic had other plans. Like many others in 2021, Holstein Ontario’s Board of Directors made the decision to move our meeting online. This had several unforeseen benefits, the biggest of which was that members from all parts of the province were easily able to participate. We saw record participation, with almost 70 individuals logging onto the call. Our meeting took place on February 23rd from 10:00 – 11:40 a.m. and was recorded live out of the Holstein Canada offices in Brantford, Ontario. As President Wilf Strenzke noted, we will have lots to celebrate when we meet at the Branch’s Summer Social in June. Our four Master Breeders from Ontario were announced at the meeting, and we look forward to highlighting their accomplishments in person in June. Additionally, several Gay Lea Combined Component Award winners for 2021 were recognized for highest fat and protein in each age group (see page 34 for these top-placing cows). Our 2021 Heart of the Herd winner will also be announced at our Summer Social. Congratulations to all winners on their significant achievements! Vice-President James Cranston presented the financials, noting that the Branch was in a positive financial position, with strong reserves. To review the full Financial Statements of the Branch, please view the Annual Report on our website. Holstein Canada President Elyse Gendron and CEO Vincent Landry presented a report and unveiled plans for an exciting year ahead. They encouraged everyone to attend Holstein Canada’s Convention, which took place in Saskatchewan April 20th to 23rd. We look forward to seeing everyone at our Summer Social, taking place June 22nd and 23rd in Wellington County (for more details, see pages 18-22). Join us to celebrate award winners, staff milestones, and the 40th anniversary of the Branch!

Since its beginning in 1929, the Master Breeder Award recognizes the breeding achievements of Holstein Canada members. What is one thing that you would like people to know about your farm? The farm was bought in 1972 by my grandfather. I (Shawn) purchased it from my parents in 2020 and it continues to be, by and large, a familyrun operation. Today, we are focusing on Polled Genetics and the A2 gene. 75 per cent of the herd is Holstein and the remainder are Brown Swiss and Milking Shorthorn. Looking back, what has been the key to your success? A few highlights so far have been breeding and selling Koopycrest Jasper Vivian EX-93, who was Grand Champion at The Quinte Exhibition. Also having the highest milk value for Holsteins in Ontario a few years ago. A key to our success is milking 3x/day to achieve high production numbers.

Who are your mentors? Who would you like to thank? There are a lot of people in the industry who are willing to share their thoughts and give different ideas and that has been appreciated. I would like to thank my parents who let me take control of the breeding program (their prefix was Scottview) at a young age. Investing in the Future

aking decisions that will benefit the family farm in the future has been a long-standing objective at Combview Farms Ltd., Castleton, ON, where today the fourth and fifth generation of McCombs to farm this land, Bob and Marion McComb and their son Matt and wife Shannon, are carrying on this proud tradition. And what a legacy they are creating with their Combview Holstein herd recently moving into a brand new freestall barn with robots. The McComb family has a long history in Northumberland County. Bob’s great-grandparents settled on what is now Combview Farms in 1906. They had six daughters and two sons. One son ultimately took over the home farm, while the other son bought a farm just to the west. “My Dad, Marvin (who grew up on the second farm), came to work here for his bachelor uncle Alex after high school and never left,” Bob explains. Alex, who bred purebred Holsteins under the Bar M prefix, lived with two unmarried sisters, Sarah and Grace, who were also very much a part of the daily farming activities. Marvin and his wife Shirley eventually took over the farm and established the Combview prefix in 1987. In 2019, they were inducted into the Quinte Agricultural Wall of Fame. “My brother Dale and I were pretty much raised by Dad’s maiden aunts because our mom was a teacher,” says Bob. “Dale is now an Environmental Management Specialist with OMAF and lives in Guelph with wife Trish and son Jared.” Marvin also had three brothers who had Holstein herds at one time in this neighbourhood – Dave (Combhaven), Russell (Midcomb) and Bruce (Combdale).

Over the years continued improvements to this farm helped move it forward and ensured the next generation of McCombs had the best chance to succeed. For example, in 1987 an automated feeder on a track was installed in the tie-stall barn to feed the cows six times a day. “It increased our cows’ intake, was better for their health, and boosted production quite a bit,” Bob recalls. Bob and Marion bought Combview in 1992 from Bob’s parents. They started out milking 48 cows in the tie-stall barn. Their son Matt and daughter Olivia, who along with her husband Sommer Abernaithe are now nurses in Peterborough, were actively involved on the farm growing up. Matt, who like his father is a Kemptville Agricultural College graduate, decided to return to the farm fulltime in 2013. Today Bob, 60, and Matt, 34, share in the decision making at Combview with Matt taking the lead on the dairy side and Bob on the crop side. A sixth generation of McCombs now makes their home here as Bob and Marion work to complete a succession plan that will bring Matt and Shannon and their two children, 4-year-old Evan and 3-year-old Alyssa, into the business. The McCombs began talking about expanding and building a new free-stall barn after Matt came home in 2013. “Our old tie-stall barn was locked into how many cows we could milk and it was already quite labour intensive,” says Matt. “We either had to spend a bunch of money in the old barn to revitalize it or build a new facility that would allow us to grow.” As lumber and other building costs started to climb, however, those plans kept being put on hold. In 2017,

the McCombs built a new manure pit and switched over to a TMR (resulting in a 30 BCA point production increase) believing they could build a new barn the following year. But with costs continuing to rise, Matt says, “We started looking at what we could do to make our overall project cost less money. Our original plan was for 120 stalls. So then we came up with a blueprint to do an 80-stall barn with robots and use a Lely 120 manure collector, instead of alley scrappers, that would make it easier for us to expand later. We would do our expansion in two steps and bring our initial costs down.” With revised plans in place, construction started on the McCombs’ long-awaited free-stall barn on September 14, 2020. On October 5, 2021, the cows moved into the new barn. The attractive 184 x 108foot barn has 80 free-stalls and four rows (cows head-to-head), two box stalls, two Lely A5 robots, and utilizes a Lely Juno automatic feed pusher for perimeter feeding. Cows are fed a one-group TMR of baleage, corn silage, custom pellet and rolled corn, plus a pellet in the robot. Chopped straw is used for bedding on mattresses, with new straw added 3 times per week. The Lely manure collector has eight routes programmed into it and can be targeted to cover certain areas more often.

Bob and Matt are pleased with their new barn. “While it hasn’t changed our time schedule a lot, chores do take less time and it is less physically demanding,” they say. “Our cows have responded fairly well to the robots. It has been amazing to see how quickly the milk has come up on our fresh cows because they are being milked 3-4X/day instead of 2X/day and can milk as much as they want.” The McCombs are currently milking 60 cows who average 38 litres of milk per day with 4.1 per cent fat and 3.2 per cent protein. This homebred herd includes five ME, four EX, 27 VG and 25 GP cows. They have been a “closed” herd since 1985. The family has 400 workable acres of land and grows corn, soybeans, wheat and hay. They have one full-time and two-part, student employees. Calves and heifers continue to be raised in the old barn. Bred heifers and dry cows are housed outside on a bedding pack and for now still calve in the old barn before moving to the new facility.

And what’s nice about classification is that you have somebody else coming in to look at your animals and picking out the strengths and weaknesses so that you can use that information to breed your cows accordingly,” states Matt.

THE HERD MATRIARCHS

The McCombs aim for a medium-sized cow with a well-attached udder and good feet and legs - that cow who is going to stick around for several lactations. “When breeding cows, I try to find a cow’s weak point and correctively improve on that,” explains Matt. “If she is a higher-producing animal, I try to breed her to a little more type bull and vice-versa. I stay away from extremes and look for bulls that are more balanced. Right now, we’re using more proven bulls because of their reliability.” Prelude and Windbrook worked “We have always had a low Somatic Cell Count (SCC) and try to run well in this herd in the past. Justifiably proud of these honours, they hope to continue replicating such achievements in their new barn.

The McCombs use DairyComp and were one of the early adopters one time. The most impactful of Soo’s four daughters was a Gibson, of this herd management software program. They are staunch Combview Soo Sylkie VG-87 2*, who made 111,753 kg milk, 3.9% supporters of milk recording and classification. “We like classifying fat, 3.3% protein in nine lactations and had two EX, two VG and

five GP daughters. A Good Plus Derby daughter from Sylkie is the mother of Combview Sophie Sandy EX-93-4E, the McCombs’ highest scored cow ever at 93 points. This 9-year-old herd favourite by Windbrook has over 87,000 kg milk lifetime to date and four daughters. Two other branches of the Soo family can also be found here. One line comes through Sylkie’s Modest daughter, Combview Sylkie Dart EX-91-4E 1*, who made over 66,000 kg milk lifetime and had one EX and three VG daughters. Another traces to a sister of Sylkie, Combview Soo Sheena VG-86, a Leadmaster who has many descendants. “The Soos are all-around cows,” says Bob, “cows with a will to milk who keep chugging along, getting pregnant and giving us lots of heifers.” Two other cows whose influence is growing here are Combview Gail Gwen EX-92-5E and Combview Alanna Alice EX-90-4E. Gwen, a 10-year-old Lauthority, is on track to make over 100,000 kg milk lifetime and has several young daughters. Alice was a Denzel who made 85,943 kg milk in eight lactations before leaving the herd. She left three milking daughters including a 9-year-old Fever, Combview Alice Arctic EX-91-5E, who is headed for over 75,000 kg milk lifetime in seven lactations.

COMMITMENT TO BUILDING THE FUTURE The McCombs are very involved in their community and local agricultural organizations. Bob is a member and past president of the Northumberland Dairy Producer Committee, and a director for the Northumberland County Cattlemen’s Association and Soil & Crop Association, while Marion is chairperson of the Northumberland Agricultural Awareness Committee. They are also very involved with their local church. Matt, taking a cue from his communityminded parents, has served as a director on the Northumberland County Holstein Club Board since 2015. W W W. With their cows in the new barn, the McCombs are beginning to look ahead to their next steps. “Now there is room to expand and that has been our main focus for several years,” states Matt. “There are several things we can still do in the new barn that we didn’t tackle right away, but did lay the groundwork for so that we could do as needs and finances permitted. We are buying milk quota every month. We would love to get up to 80 cows and we do have the plan that we could make the jump up to 120 stalls to maximize our two robots. That is the second stage we talked about, but we are a few years away from that.” While hard work and perseverance are at the core of the McCombs’ success, they credit several other reasons as well. “We have a lot of good people working with us like our veterinarian, feed/agronomy representative and A.I. inseminator,” acknowledges Matt. “We need these people to make our business successful. We don’t do it on our own. The friends I made while at Kemptville also continue to be a great source of support, tips and information for me personally.” But perhaps the greatest contributing factor to this farm’s continued success lies with the progressive decisions and investments each generation of the McComb family made for this farm. “Every generation has made some jump that most other people weren’t doing, but that looked like it was the way things were going in the industry,” states Bob. “They made decisions that would benefit the farm down the road. They invested in the farm.” As Matt prepares to become the fifth generation of McCombs at the helm, he is quick to acknowledge the groundwork done by those before him. “It is those decisions made by the generations before that has helped make this farm successful for the next,” he says. “I am very lucky to be able now to build on what my family has laid out for me.”

Af ter 47 years of dedicated service to the Holstein family... Mary Poirier announced her plans in early 2022 to retire this spring. Mary’s last day in the office was April 1st.

Mary’s career with Holstein Canada began in 1975, when she took a summer job working in the Pedigree Department. Shortly before she started, she recalls announcing to her father – a hardworking, salt-of-the-earth dairy farmer from Holland - that she planned to take the summer off and have a bit of a break before heading off to Conestoga College in the fall. He was none too impressed and gave her two options: work on the farm or find a job. Mary chose the latter. She replied to a small, two-line ad in the local newspaper for a job at Holstein Canada and started three weeks later, right after she finished high school, at their office in downtown Brantford, Ont. Mary worked for Holstein Canada for five years in several departments including Pedigree, Promotion, Research and lastly, the Ontario Extension department under Murray Hunt. Then, in 1980, in the leadup to forming the Ontario Branch, Mary was offered a job working as the assistant for its first Secretary-Manager, Joe Snyder. Mary worked with five different GM’s in her time with Holstein Ontario: Joe Snyder, Bill Dobbin, Jason French, Peter Brand and Merina Johnston. She has always been a proud ambassador of the Branch and a recognizable figure at many Holstein events over the years. When plans were announced to move the Branch back to Brantford in the fall of 2017, Mary was somewhat apprehensive after having been at the Cambridge location for 30 years. The change, however, proved positive, allowing her to reunite with several former colleagues and make many new friends at the Brantford office, too. In her time at the Branch, Mary has held a wide array of responsibilities; too many, in fact, to list. She has always kept the office running smoothly, proving a great source of knowledge on past decisions and processes thanks in part to her remarkable memory and recollection of details. She says that although she has been working for the organization for over four decades, her role was always evolving and she was never, ever bored. In addition to her contributions to the Branch, Mary was also an integral part of the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund for many years, an organization close to her heart given her dedication to youth in this industry. We will miss seeing Mary at the office, as will the many Board members, industry partners, 4-H leaders, volunteers, and Holstein members with whom she has worked with over the years. We have no doubt that once she settles into her new role, she will be enjoying some well-deserved Cabernet Sauvignon while relaxing with Paul at their place on the water in St. Williams. She also looks forward to enjoying family dinners with her two adult children and their spouses; attending tea parties hosted by her four treasured grandchildren; touring the countryside on the back of Paul’s 3-wheeled Spyder and spending quality time with all those who mean so much to her. An overdue trip somewhere warm may also be in her future. Wishing you all the best in your retirement, Mary. You will be missed!

Mitchell Anderson – Commitment at its Finest

A NEW EXCELLENT COW OR A VERY GOOD TWO-YEAR-OLD IS A BREEDING ACCOMPLISHMENT. These cows are the highlight of any herd visit and a source of pride for their breeders and owners. We are excited to announce that Martina Arth has joined the Holstein Ontario team as our Office Coordinator! Martina grew up on a dairy farm in Jerseyville, ON. A University of Guelph graduate from the BSc.Agr. program, she has never strayed far from her agricultural roots. She has many years of experience in administrative and bookkeeping rolls and has served on several volunteer committees and Boards of Directors. She has been actively involved in 4-H both as a member, and then for the past 30 years as a leader of the Dairy Club in Wentworth County. Martina’s longtime involvement with the Ancaster Agricultural society both as a volunteer and as a staff member have given her valuable experience working with volunteer based, non-profit organizations. She has been a member of the Ontario Spring Discovery show committee, the National Jersey show committee and serves as the Cattle Committee Chairman at the Ancaster Fair. She is a strong supporter of youth dairy activities. Martina and her husband Andy have three grown children and enjoy country living on their small hobby farm in Jerseyville, ON. In her free time, Martina enjoys riding, driving, and showing her Haflinger horses, as well as many other outdoor activities including mountain biking and gardening.

MARTINA ARTH JOINS THE HOLSTEIN ONTARIO TEAM

Adam Hunt has accepted the role of Director for EastCentral Ontario, replacing Tara Bullock whose term came to an end in February. Adam hails from Elginburg, Ontario where he raises 25 purebred Holsteins under the Trekili prefix. He has owned several All-Canadian awardwinners and nominations, including his first homebred nomination in 2015 with Trekili W A Lola Braxton. Off the farm, Adam is a Sales Representative and Dairy Progeny Specialist for Select Sires Genervations. He also serves as an Official Judge for Holstein Canada where he has had the opportunity to judge multiple 4-H shows, Breeders Cups’, and County shows. We welcome Adam and know he will be a great addition to the Holstein Ontario Board!

At our February 2021 Annual General Meeting, bylaw 2.1 was voted upon, which would see our three Holstein Ontario Field Reps move under the Holstein Canada umbrella. This transition has been referred to as the “Field Services Project”. The vote was passed, and in January 2022, the Field Reps made the transition. As a member, the main change you will notice is in your billing (your Ontario membership fee decreased from 13 per cent to 6 per cent). It is our intention that the level of service you have come to expect from the Field Reps remains the same. Knonaudale Muddy is a direct descendant of Knonaudale Jasmine EX-96. 6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation?

We’re proud of the offspring that we have been able to sell. It’s so Goldwyn and Doorman have worked well in the past. We are currently rewarding to see them go on and preform well for the buyers. If you could improve one thing in your operation, what would it be?
