EDITOR’S NOTE

SIMPLE IS BETTER

As I put the final touches on the issue you now hold in your hands, I’m left wondering where the time has gone. How are we half way through summer already? How has life become SO busy? With the world opening again, the answer is right in front of me. Yes, life was uncertain during the early days of the pandemic. But it was also slower, easier, and more care-free. I’m thrilled the kids are back doing the sports and activities they enjoy, but I sometimes find myself longing for those days of quiet again – the days when we didn’t rush to three activities in one evening and sit down for supper at 7:30 each night! The one thing I have come to realize is that lowering one’s expectations (especially if you’re a perfectionist like I am) and simplifying things is necessary if we want to make it through in one piece! “Simple is better,” says Tom Babcook, who runs Crater Farms in Hartington, Ont. Read their story on page 19 to find out how creating efficiencies on their Frontenac County farm has allowed them to get in and out of the barn faster and rely on help when needed. Whether it’s work, a 4-H event, or even entertaining friends over the summer, simplifying things doesn’t mean you’re taking the easy road; it just means you’re being smarter about your time. And with the switch from no events to all the events, that’s key! Wishing you a simple, stress-free summer,

A CALL TO ACTION

What a busy few months it has been at Holstein Ontario! It doesn’t seem possible that August is almost here! As quickly as COVID shut everything down, life has just as quickly opened back up and events and shows are back on track! Ontario Spring Discovery, Holstein Canada National Convention, our office relocation, Holstein Ontario Summer Social, National Judges Conference and three successful Junior Shows have kept us very busy with planning underway for a Provincial Judging School, the fourth Junior Show, TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic and so much more. In preparing for all of these events, one thing is abundantly clear: our dairy industry is full of dedicated, hard-working and enthusiastic volunteers and industry partners. All these events rely on the contributions of volunteers and committee members for fundraising, manpower, promotion and execution. Without them, the many events that we all enjoy would not be possible, so I want to take this opportunity to say a big thank you to all of you for all you do for the broader dairy community. That includes your local club directors and secretaries.

The county clubs are the foundation of Holstein Ontario and work hard to organize Twilight meetings, Breeders’ Cups, County Shows and other events. And like many other community groups, some of them are struggling with maintaining a volunteer base to draw on to help organize and manage these events. So…consider this a call to action! If you haven’t before, now is the time to reach out and offer some help or assistance. Maybe it’s hosting a Twilight meeting, maybe it’s helping to set up for the county show, or perhaps it’s driving the judge around for the Breeders’ Cup. It could be a day here and there, or it could be stepping up to be a director. Whatever you can manage would be welcomed and will help keep these events running. If you are not sure who to contact for your local club, please reach out to us at the Branch and we can provide you with a contact. This is also a great way for our teenagers in high school to earn their required volunteer hours. With that in mind, I hope to see lots of you out and about this summer, sharing the love of all things Holstein. Sincerely,

CALVES FOR A CAUSE After its success in 2021, a second successful Calves for a Cause sale took place this year on May 21. All proceeds from the online sale went to the Children’s Health Foundation at London Children’s Hospital in London, Ont., where Darryl and Sarah Markus’ two-year-old son, Brooks, has spent over 200 days as an inpatient. His rare congenital disorder requires ongoing care from multiple specialists and teams.

In the Spring of 2020, we had the chance to visit the Evans family of Highview Holsteins in Port Perry, Ont. to see the province’s 2019 Heart of the Herd winner, Highview Rambo Tanner, in all her glory. This past June, we received the below update from Grant Evans: “Just thought I would pass on that Tanner has reached the EX 11E status! The classifier was in this past Thursday. She is still doing very well. The classifier was amazed at how well she looked as she is on her 14th lactation. I am not sure, but she could be the 1st 11E cow in Canada.” As it turns out, Tanner is indeed the only living 11E cow in Canada, but not the first. In 2007 Floydholm Starbuck Polly, bred by Earle B. Floyd from New Brunswick, was made EX 12E in her 15th lactation. Two tremendous cows and undoubtedly the Heart of each of these respective herds! We are always thrilled to receive such happy news! MIDDLESEX DAIRY DAY A RESOUNDING SUCCESS! Close to 250 people came out to celebrate Middlesex Dairy Day on June 30, 2022 at Cavanaleck Farms Ltd. in Belmont, Ont. The day kicked off with a BBQ lunch at 12:30 pm, followed by an afternoon program filled with activities for the kids, a judging class and some special awards. Kris Pettit of Mistyglen Holsteins was the guest speaker and she shared her farm’s journey of opening an on-farm processing plant and creamery. The successful event was presented by the Middlesex Dairy Producer Committee and the Middlesex Holstein Club. PHOTO BY MEL O’SHEA.

“With the love he and our family has received through his admissions, we wanted to give back and Calves for a Cause is our way of doing that!” says Darryl. “We are beyond thankful to the dairy community for the tremendous support of this sale.” A total of $34,000 was raised this year. HOLSTEIN CANADA HONOURS THE JENKINS FAMILY KUEPFER REPRESENTS ONTARIO DAIRY FARMERS LIVE ON TV Thanks in part to an initiative organized by DFO, Shelley Kuepfer did something earlier this spring she never imagined herself doing. “Jumped out of my comfort zone and did a LIVE television segment on Breakfast Television this morning!” she says on her social media account. Shelley shared what life is like on her family’s 5th generation dairy farm and expressed her gratitude for being able to provide others with quality milk products while enjoying the life she, her partner Greg and their three girls have built on the farm. The Century of Holstein award recognizes the dedication and contribution of Holstein families through their long-standing membership with Holstein Canada. If a family’s relationship with the Association can be traced to 100 years of active, continuous membership, then it is eligible for this distinction. In 2019, Charlie Jenkins of Monoak Farms in Belmont, Ont. were recognized with the award. The Jenkins family have been members of Holstein Canada since James C. Jenkins joined in 1920. NATIONAL JUDGING CONFERENCE

A WORD FROM THE NATIONAL JUDGING CONFERENCE COMMITTEE CHAIR, NANCY BEERWORT: It has been five years since Holstein Canada has held a National Judging Conference so a key word for this year’s Conference was “consistency” - aiming to have all our judges on the same page. The Conference was attended by 47 influential judges from across Canada. A variety of topics were discussed and there was feedback from these judges as to how we can make our Judging Program even better. I really appreciate the commitment these judges made to attend, and I especially appreciate their positive attitude and input.

In the evening, the group took part in a Showmanship Panel, moderated by Mike West and delivered by Matt Lange, Shawnda Enright and Dominic Fortier.

MONDAY, JUNE 27

Participants were welcomed in the morning with Glen McNeil moderating.

•

Brian Slaughter brought greetings as the new Chair of the Show & Judging Committee.

•

A series of presentations were given over the course of the morning at the hotel from Dan Doner (“The Professional Judge”); Mike Farlinger and Murray Reissner (“Selecting the Champion”); Dr. Gord Atkins and Vincent Landry (“Show Ethics - A Judge’s Role”).

•

Dr. Gord Atkins introduced the idea of Functional Conformation to the attending judges.

•

After lunch, the group traveled to Dandyland Farms in Schomberg, Ont. to work on Functional Conformation in a real-life setting. Brian Carscadden, Bruno Jubinville and Dr. Gord Atkins led the session.

•

Official Judges, Mike Farlinger and Stephanie Murphy presented on Reasons.

•

In the evening, Devin O’Hara, Kenton Lindenbach and David Crack sat on a panel discussing “Tips for Judging Breeders’ Cup Competitions.”

After breakfast at the hotel, the judges traveled to Quality Holsteins to judge six classes of dairy cows (1st Lact., 2nd Lact., Mature Cows in the morning and Jersey 2-year-olds, Winter Calves and Jersey Summer Yearlings in the afternoon).

here may be lots of trees, rocks, hills, a lake and even a meteorite crater on their farm, but it is the outstanding Holstein herd of Tom and Karen Babcook and family of Crater Farm, Hartington, Ont., that truly takes centre stage at this Frontenac County dairy operation. A family farm where keeping things simple and efficient is key, the Babcooks’ success in breeding Holsteins with great conformation has kept the rewards coming.

now 49, and Karen, 48, bought the farm in 2013. They have three children. Dylan, 19, is now working here full-time, while his sisters, Katie, 21, a full-time nurse, and Stella, 15, also help out with the 140-head Holstein herd. Alfalfa and grass hay and corn for silage are grown on the 500-acre farm. Tom’s Dad and brother Vince, plus the occasional part-time student, help out with fieldwork and relief milking. A work-life balance is important to the Babcooks. “Our kids are involved in a lot of sports and activities like 4-H and we try not to miss those events,” says Karen. Tom is a long-time Frontenac County Holstein Club Director and Karen was a 4-H leader for 10 years. Tom, Dylan and Irwin all play on a farmers’ pick-up hockey team. In the summer, the family enjoys spending time at their cottage just a few minutes away on Knowlton Lake.

Five generations of Babcooks have owned Crater Farm since it was established in the 1860s by George Babcook. Purebred Holsteins were introduced in the 1950s by Tom’s grandfather and greatgrandfather, Ray and Gerald. They took the prefix “Crater” after the Holleford Crater located on the farm. Scientists estimate that the crater, revealed in aerial photos in 1955, was created when a meteorite, travelling 55,000 km/hour, smashed into the earth THE INDIANA FAMILY eons ago blasting a hole 244 metres deep and 2.5 km wide. 2009, this Goldwyn daughter competed at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic as a senior calf for Karen’s niece Sophie. After Indiana calved as a milking yearling in September 2011, Sophie’s boyfriend (now husband), Kyle Rivington of Riview Jerseys/Glennholme Holsteins, Carp, wanted to see her. Tom recalls, “It was raining that morning. When we opened the big door to let the cows in, we heard a big bang. Indiana had been thrown into a 6-foot water trough, was on her side and flaying her head. Luckily there was a loader tractor nearby with two bale spears which fit perfectly around the trough. We lifted it up and slowly tipped her out. Indiana got up, shook it off and went into the barn and started eating. When Kyle got there, he said, ‘Oh, you’ve washed her already.’ I never told him differently for months,” laughs Tom. Interest from buyers intensified in this stylish heifer as she placed second in the milking yearlings at Kemptville Championship Show that fall and then went to Gerald Coughlin’s Trent Valley Farm until the Royal Winter Fair. When Indiana arrived at the Royal, the phone calls started. Indiana was purchased by Mario Comtois of Gen-Com Holstein, Drummondville, QC. She went on to win her class at the Royal as a thrilled Babcook family watched. Later, she was named All-Canadian Milking Yearling for 2011. In 2012, Indiana was nominated for All-Canadian and All-American Senior 2-Year-Old after another solid show season. While the decision to sell Indiana was an emotional and difficult one, Karen says looking back, “It was a good choice. Indiana really opened up a lot of cattle markets for us in Quebec in the years to come. That was so good for us.” As fate would have it, a few years later the Babcooks were able to reacquire Indiana privately before the 2016 Gen-Com Dispersal where her progeny were among the top selling families. Back home, this beloved cow joined her dam, Crater Santana Linjet EX93-6E 10*, and a slew of sisters. “Indiana and Santana were big, powerful, wide cows. We ET’d them and on the first flush got 59 sexed embryos between them,” beams Tom. “They are still the main family in our herd.” Indiana lived to be 10-years-old, made 107,799 kg milk, 4.1% fat, 3.4% protein lifetime. She has two EX and 11 VG daughters to date with several VG daughters still at Crater, along with an Absolute-Red calf. Santana, who was Grand Champion at the Frontenac County Show in 2012, lived to be 13. She had six EX (all Goldwyns), 15 VG (eight Goldwyns) and four GP daughters. It was Indiana’s fourth dam, Crater Janet Broker EX-2E 1*, that gave the Babcooks the “show bug”. “It was 1998, the same year we got married,” the couple says. “Classifier Don Aylsworth had just made Janet 89 points and said we should get her to a show. We had never showed at that point. We took Janet and one calf to the Frontenac County Show in Kingston where the fellow Frontenac breeders welcomed us and were really encouraging as Janet went on to win Grand Champion. We have only missed one or two Frontenac Shows since. We always have a lot of 4-H calves and enough cows in our string to make a Breeder’s Herd. We have had four of the show’s last eight Grand Champions.”

Creating lots of excitement currently for the farm is a March 2020 heifer, Crater Camilina Sidekick, from the famed Camomile family. Five years ago, Tom bought six Doorman embryos from Silvermaple Damion Camomile EX-95-USA 5*, the two-time All-Canadian and All-American by Damion. While they ended up with only one viable daughter, a Sidekick flush to that VG Doorman produced Camilina, a high genomic heifer with +13 GPA Conformation (4/22). Camilina was flushed as a virgin heifer. She now has three bulls and three heifers born in 2022 by Delta-Lambda who are all over +3200 GPA LPI, with the top bull at +14 GPA Conformation and a heifer at +15 GPA Conformation. The bull has generated interest from A.I. companies. “We have bred five EX-93 and one EX-94 cow in the last ten years,” says Tom proudly. The heart of their herd today is 6-year-old Crater Magda Doorman EX-93-3E. This third generation, homebred EX by Doorman just gained her 3E in June and has young heifers by Sidekick, Chief and Delta-Lambda. Magda is from Crater Melon Sanchez EX-93-4E 3* and then an EX-90 Goldwyn. The highest scored Crater bred cow, Crater Lia Goldwyn EX-94-3E, is owned by Fermes Silvercrest, Belgo and Belgarde, Acton Vale, QC, and was Grand Champion at Expo Richmond in 2018.

KEEPING IT SIMPLE “We try to keep it simple and efficient on our farm,” says Karen. “Efficiency is a big deal for us.” As Tom reiterates, “Simple is better. That is a big key when it comes to management. By streamlining things, and keeping it simple, we can get in and out of the barn faster and can have other people step in and help us when needed without much problem.”

The Crater prefix also appears in the pedigree of a noted Red & White show champion in the U.S., Dyks Kite Linda-Red-ET EX95-4E-USA, a three-time All-American and 2008 Reserve Grand Champion at World Dairy Expo. Her Rubens dam, Double-G Rubens Lindsay EX-94-4E-USA, was nominated for All-Canadian Milking Yearling in 2001 and is a daughter of Crater Broker Lucky, The Crater barn, built in three stages, is a reflection of the Babcooks’ who was sold in dam by the Babcooks in 1993.

progress and more than 160-year history. The original barn, with its low ceilings and worn wood, is in the middle, while to the left is a barn put up in 1986. On the right is the attractive tie-stall barn, with its automatic window curtains and great cow comfort, built in 2002. The Babcooks currently milk 70 cows with automatic take-offs in this barn where cows are fed a TMR of corn silage, haylage, dry corn and protein supplement. “Six months of the year our cows are outside on pasture and just come in for milking,” say Tom and Karen. “They seem to stay healthier, have less trouble with their feet and legs, and their mobility is really good because of the pasture. They travel up to a 1/2 mile each way on the county road past our farm to get to their pasture. Lots of cameras come out from city people travelling through the area who have never seen a live cow,” they smile. “I want a good legged and uddered cow with a wide frame,” states Tom. Those goals are reflected in the present Crater herd of three ME, six EX, 40 VG and 13 GP cows who average 210-228-230 BCA for production. There is even an Excellent Jersey in the lineup. Karen explains. “One day, Tom had a weak moment and said, ‘I would even milk a Jersey if I had one.’ I made the phone call and within five minutes had bought Tom a Jersey. We bred her and we now have our first homebred, Excellent Jersey.”

The number one Delta-Lambda heifer for Dairy Strength in Canada, Crater Belleva Lambda, is a product of these crosses being from a fourth generation VG Sidekick who traces to Crater Lexus Linjet EX92-3E. Two-thirds of the bulls used at Crater are proven and 80% of the semen is sexed. Beef semen is used on the lower end of the herd. The Babcooks have genomic tested quite a few animals recently. “We do it for marketing, to see what the animal is lacking, and what, or whether or not, to breed them,” says Tom. For years, the Babcooks boarded out at least 20 bred heifers to other farms during the winter. But with slower cattle markets and rising heifer raising costs, Tom says they made a conscious decision two years ago to cut costs by keeping all their heifers at home, reducing their heifer inventory, and “becoming more efficient”. They also lowered their age at first-calving from 29 to 24 months. Genomic testing, and the use of sexed and beef semen, means they can concentrate even more on their best genetics now.

As Tom looks ahead in the industry, he says, “I think there is a future for A2 milk. I know people who have bought A2 milk because they have digestive issues and it has really helped them. But they can’t necessarily get it where they want to because it isn’t in every store. This is a market our dairy industry is missing and should be filling more. While a lot of our cows are A2A2 just by coincidence, I think if more commercial dairymen used A2A2 bulls and we focused on Tom became interested in breeding and selecting bulls as a teenager. that market it could boost milk sales and increase the amount of “I learned a lot from my Dad. to the Smith family on their province-wide Heart of Herd winner, Smithden Shottle Aphrodite! A past county winner in 2019, Aphrodite was a remarkable cow whose combined beauty and utility brought her to the top of the provincial Heart of the Herd standings for 2021. In Aphrodite’s nine lactations, she made 127,492 kgs of milk, with a BCA of 262-259-262. As a fiveyear-old, she made 14,993 kgs in 305 days. As a three-year-old, she made 17,377 kgs, earning her a Superior Lactation award. Scoring 81 points as Two-year-old, Aphrodite quickly developed into a well-balanced cow who could do it all, with a 92-point Mammary System, 93-point Rump, 94-point Feet & Legs and 96 points in Dairy Strength. By her third calving, she had reached VG-85 and shot up to an EX-91 after her fourth calf. She settled in at EX-93 points in her fifth lactation, consistently adding an “E” to her score each year until her final classification in July of 2020.

Mentorship Leads Jack Melia to Success

IT MAY HAVE BEEN DESTINY THAT HAD A HAND IN BRINGING JACK MELIA TO THE DAIRY WORLD.

By chance one day, a young Jack happened to attend a local 4-H show where his cousins were showing their calves. He was instantly hooked. “As soon as I was old enough, I started showing,” says Jack. “It fast became my entire life.” Neither Jack nor his cousins had any experience with dairy calves until 4-H. It happened that his aunt was friends with 4-H leader Martina Arth and that’s how his cousins got involved, followed by him. “Sports were the biggest part of my life. Once I started showing calves, sports petered out quickly,” laughs Jack. “It was eat, sleep, breathe sports, then it was dairy cattle.” He hasn’t missed a year in the dairy club since he joined, now in his ninth year for 2022. Growing up on a rural property near Lynden, Ont., the logical place to get a 4-H calf for the first few years was at Summitholm Holsteins, run by the Loewith family. This led to Jack’s first part-time job. “I was there all the time anyway leading calves and helping out, so they started paying me,” joked Jack. He fed calves there for about seven years. He also chased cows for milking, cleaned stalls, milked and helped with cropping over they years. As he got older, he gained more responsibility. Jack has been extremely lucky to have some top players in the dairy and showing world act as mentors for him. That mentorship has played a key role in Jack developing his skills and success within the 4-H program and his career. At 13 years of age, in his third year of 4-H, Jack’s first big mentor was Jeff Stephens. “He took me on, taking me to the bigger shows. He helped me fine-tune my skills in showmanship and getting animals ready.” Jack would go on to work with Jeff for four to five years. Jack’s next big mentorship opportunity came when he started

working with Len Vis of Mapelwood Holsteins. Jack worked on the farm for two to three years and went to bigger shows like the Royal, all the while continuing to learn from Len. “Len taught me the finer points of getting cattle from the barn to the ring,” says Jack. Len Vis also introduced Jack to the folks at Vogue Cattle Company. Following his time with Mapelwood and Vogue, Jack was the herdsman for Joe Russworm and learned about boarding high end show cattle. Unfortunately, with that year being the first of COVID, most shows were canceled. In 2021, Jack took the skills he’s gained over the years and went on his own boarding 15-20 in Len Vis’s old recipient barn. In his time at Summitholm, he saw how an extremely well-managed dairy operation can be so successful and learned a lot from one of the top managed dairy farms in the country. It has proven to be extremely valuable for him. “At Summitholm, I learned 95 per cent of my management and cow knowledge. I apply that and the knowledge I’ve gained from my other mentors on the show side to get the best out of my clients’ calves and my own,” says Jack. Jack continues his quest for knowledge and is now learning from David Dyment, currently boarding cattle for him as well. Alongside his boarding, buying and selling and fitting career Jack now has his dream job. After helping with social media for a year and a half, he is now the Director of Marketing and Sales for online bull company AG3, owned by David Dyment. “I’ve always been able to talk to people and sell. Now I get to do that for a job,” says Jack. While some 4-H members want a high-type calf to try to win conformation classes, Jack wants to reach his highest potential in

showmanship. “My biggest focus point since I started has been showmanship, always wanting to be the best,” he says. “My favourite part of it is working with the calf at home and getting to know her on a personal level.” He has done well over the years at Wentworth County shows, being Champion Showperson a number of times and winning the various age groups. This has led him to representing his county at the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic, where he has consistently placed close to 10th in showmanship the three times he has participated. His goal for this year and next is to win his class in showmanship and be Champion Showperson. “I don’t like being the centre of attention, but I love being in the centre of the ring.”

Currently, there is a huge demand for fitters. Having always clipped his own 4-H calf, he now does it professionally as well. “Learn how to clip,” he says to younger 4-H members. “You can go a lot of places. That clipper bag is your passport. If you can clip well or know how to get a cow ready you can go anywhere.” For the last two to three years, Jack has been going to the United States clipping and working at shows. He’s experienced the various aspects of the US dairy industry. “It’s a big world out there,” says Jack. “I find it very cool how one industry can be so profitable with so many different ways of doing things. I was in Utah in March, and they just have a roof, and the cows live in a yard. Compare that to New York state where they have such different styles of barns. Cattle breeders can be successful in so many different ways.”

Dairy Sen$e was back, live, this year for a three-day event taking place May 5-7 at Durham College in Oshawa, Ont. The new location provided access to a different base of dairy farms for the on-farm visits that took place on day two of the conference. During the conference, participants spent a day in the classroom, learning from guest speakers from within the industry as well as farm leaders to gain an understanding of some of the real-world skills and practices needed to run and thrive on a successful operation.

Adam Petherick, who owns and operates Almerson Farms Ltd. near Campbellford with his wife and parents and represents Region 4 on the DFO Board, spoke about the many opportunities available to young farmers, but also some of the challenges he faced. “Hard work, flexibility, and surrounding myself with a good team has given me the opportunity to serve my industry and try to make a difference,” he said. Dr. Tim Henshaw spoke on Mental Health and Building a Resilient Life. He shared firsthand his mental health challenges throughout his life and how he sought to improve his situation and become successful while helping others. Farm tours on day two were a highlight of the conference for many and included stops at Maryland Farms. Here, the Callaghan family milks approximately 240 cows in a double 16 parlor and crops 3,000 acres of owned and rented land. Two digesters on their farm use cow manure to produce 500 kw of power, which is sold back to the grid. Enniskillen Jerseys and Sargent Family Dairy were stops two and three. The Sargent family milks 53 purebred Jerseys, focusing on high type cows that last. They opened the dairy in June of 2021 and rely on high fat (5.13 per cent) and high protein (4.15 per cent) milk from their Jersey herd to make the products sold in their store. Their current offering includes 2%, homogenized and flavoured milk; butter, cheese curd, cheddar cheese, flavoured cheeses, and camembert, with more products to come. HOLSTEIN ONTARIO SUMMER SOCIAL

“It’s SO nice to see people again!” was a commonly heard phrase at our Summer Social, held June 22-23 in Elora, Ont. And how true it was. Our last big coming together was back in late February 2020, when we were hosted by Frontenac County for our Annual General Meeting. We haven’t held an in-person Branch event for a long time, which means many of us haven’t had the chance to see our Holstein friends socially for a long time. After two long years, everyone was ready to let loose and enjoy each other’s company and the newly built GrandWay and Events Center in Elora, Ont. was the perfect setting to do just that! Designated “Farm Tour Day,” day one saw visitors take in some of Wellington County’s finest dairy herds. Cows were clipped, tails were washed, and barns were tidied, all in preparation to welcome tourgoers from near and far. Farm Tours were followed by the EastGen Evening of Excellence, where three of our Ontario Master Breeders from 2021 were recognized and presented with a personalized farm sign, as well as one recipient from 2020. A BBQ dinner, horse races and a fun auction in support of the Ontario Dairy Youth Trust Fund rounded out the evening. The morning of day two was spent recognizing some very important people and cows! The All-Ontario awards for 2021 were presented in the morning by the competition sponsors, followed by the Gay Lea Production Awards, Heart of the Herd winner for 2021 and the Outstanding Dairy Women’s Service Award. Smithden Shottle Aphrodite EX-93-7E 5* was the province-wide Heart of the Herd winner for 2021. Congratulations to the Smith family for breeding this once-in-a-lifetime cow! More details on Aphrodite can be found on page 22 in this issue. Heather Parkin delivered a heartfelt presentation, recognizing two deserving winners of the Outstanding Dairy Women Service Award. Congratulations to Diane Jarrell-Ray and Jessie Weir on this wonderful achievement (see page 30 for more details). The afternoon portion of the Branch’s Summer Social was spent celebrating the Branch’s 40th anniversary. Glen McNeil, who was part of the Holstein Ontario Board and served as President in 1998, was the emcee and traced through the Branch’s history, touching upon many highlights along the way. Glen also recognized long-time employee Mary Poirier’s retirement after 47 years with the Holstein family, and paid tribute to her many accomplishments. He thanked Mary for her years of dedication to the Branch and to the membership. Mary received a standing ovation and delivered a lovely speech, thanking all of those she had worked with over the years. Congratulations, Mary!

COMMITTEE HONOURS TWO OUTSTANDING WOMEN WITH SERVICE AWARD

After making the difficult decision to forgo selecting a winner last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the committee for the Outstanding Service Award for Dairy Women chose to announce two deserving women to bestow the honour upon in 2022. “We had two nominations that rose to the top,” says Heather Parkin, who was the inaugural winner of the award and has since served as the coordinator on the selection committee. “And we wanted to be able to recognize them both for their tireless and ongoing work.” Parkin delivered the exciting news at Holstein Ontario’s Summer Social, held at the GrandWay Events Centre in Elora on June 23. The two deserving winners were Diane Jarrell-Ray and Jessie Weir.

DIANE JARRELL-RAY Diane Jarrell-Ray has been a 4-H leader for many years, offering calves to youth for over 20 years, often to kids with no farming background, and mentoring them with showmanship pointers and closely following their progress. Provincially, she is a passionate supporter of the Jersey breed in Ontario, evidenced by her strong involvement with the Central Calf Rally, the Quinte-Trent Parish Show, Belleville Championship Show, Summer Show, and the Royal. Nationally, Diane was a board member of Jersey Canada, and only the second female president of that organization. Her passion and forward thinking is seen in many positive changes that she has initiated on different committees, specifically at shows, which she seems to have a great love for.

Before presenting the winners with a framed print and a bouquet of flowers, Parkin spoke to the merits of each of these accomplished women. Having always worked full-time off the farm, Diane raises the calves and looks after all the farm books, and yet still finds time to volunteer in these many positions. Those who know her will say she is determined to achieve all that she sets her mind to. “Diane is never one to shy away from adversity of difficult decisions, whether it be at her home farm or serving on one of our industry committees,” wrote one of her nominators. “Her passion and enthusiasm for the dairy industry has encouraged not only her daughter to become involved in the industry, but also countless other youth in the community.” Congratulations Diane and thank you for your contributions.

Being involved in one of the smaller breed organizations, Jessie has always strived to ensure all breeders were offered the same level of service excellence, achieving a high level of service for members in an efficient manner with limited resources. As one of the first women to manage breed associations in Canada, Jessie is a great example to young women aspiring to have leadership roles in the dairy industry. Her support of her colleagues and the industry as a whole is inspiring to up-and-coming leaders.

Jessie lives out her passion daily as co-owner of her family farm. She is the energy behind the operation and successfully manages to balance her work off the farm with her family and farm responsibilities, including chief of finances and accounting, as well as daily chores, cattle management and cropping during high pressure months. The family farm recently underwent expansion, building a new robot barn, and they have been recognized as one of the best managed herds in the province, as well as one of the top robot herds nationally. One of Jessie’s letters of support indicated that she is as comfortable in her coveralls and boots or at the controls of a huge piece of farm equipment as she is behind her computer at work. Whereas historically Holstein Canada stamped classification results on registration papers, and; Whereas breeders relied on these updated registration papers for recordkeeping and marketing purposes, and; Whereas registration papers are currently updated to reflect genomic details as they become available, allowing the owner to reprint the updated version of the registration paper if they choose to;

According to Holstein Canada, James Watson Roulston founded Beechwood Holsteins and officially became a member of the Holstein Association in 1921.

Be it resolved that Holstein Canada investigate means to provide updated classification results on registration papers, including the option of updating the electronic registration papers following a classification scoring, to enable members to print updated registration papers if preferred.

One of the farm’s greatest accomplishments over the past 100 years is that Beechwood Citation Carol, a descendant of Beechwood Simone Sue, set a Canadian record for butterfat production. NOMINEES SOUGHT FOR 2022 CURTIS CLARK ACHIEVEMENT AWARD After a two-year absence, presentation of the prestigious Curtis Clark Achievement Award will resume at the 2022 Royal Agricultural Winter Fair in Toronto, ON, in November. The Clark Award, established in 1988, was suspended in 2020 and 2021 when the Royal Winter Fair was forced to cancel due to the Covid-19 pandemic. With the Royal slated to take place again this year and mark its 100th Anniversary, the Curtis Clark Achievement Award Committee is once again seeking nominations for its award. The Clark Award goes to the Canadian dairy cattle exhibitor who possesses the ability, sportsmanship and character necessary to be respected by their fellow breeders and exhibitors. The award is sponsored by the Alberta Holstein Branch. To be eligible for the Clark Award, the nominee must be an “active” showman, breeder or manager of any dairy cattle breed in Canada who is exhibiting animals at major shows in Canada. The person “must be present” at the Royal Winter Fair to accept the award. Nominees will be judged on their support of breed activities and ability to breed, manage, develop and exhibit dairy cattle. Selection of the winner is made by former recipients of the award. The 2022 winner will be announced during the Royal’s National Holstein Show scheduled for November 10th and 11th. 1. What is your family’s history with Holsteins?

5. What cow in your barn is currently the “Heart of the Herd”? The current “Heart of the Herd” would be Carldot Windmill Layla EX90-4YR, out of Carldot Doorman Lindsay EX-93. Layla gives a lot of milk and went Excellent at just over four years old. She has a tremendous will to work, making over 18,700 litres of milk in 365 days. We dried her up giving 40 litres a day. She will make 19,000 litres this lactation. She has three nice looking yearling daughters that I’m quite excited to see how they turn out.

12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do you value most?

They must have a good udder and be milking well when they are for sale. The cows also to have good mobility. A good cow will always sell. I recently sold Carldot Bautista Emma to Kingsway who sold her to Ducketts. She went through their sale. She was 6th at Madison, 3rd Sr. 3-Year-Old at Wisconsin Summer Championship Show and nominated All-American. That was neat to see.

6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation?

I’m proud that all my cows are deep pedigreed and have a real will to milk. I like my pedigrees! There is only one cow in the barn that has a Good Plus dam (and that was Good Plus 84 when I sold her), she is Excellent herself. All the other cows have dams with multiple generations of Very Good. I’m also proud to be a three-time Master Breeder (1988, 2000 and 2016).

13. Which bulls do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years and today?

Bulls that have the most impact over the years are Lee, Outside, Goldwyn, Windbrook and Doorman. The Windbrook daughters really had a will to live and work hard. Today I’m using Fuel, Alligator, A2P2 and Barolo. I’ve just bought some Comestar Lemagic, possibly for a flush.

7. If you could improve one thing in your operation, what would it be?

I would maybe build a calf barn for baby calves. The hutches work 14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you ok, but a calf barn would be nice.
