Every great bull has a story and this bull is no exception. Bill & Alicia Killing (pictured) Impact Farms, Stratford, ON purchased sexed Lambda embryos from a cow they really liked – Miranda P. They were surprised when a bull was born. Genomics came back a few weeks later and the bull had received all the right genes: Polled, Red Carrier, A2A2, BB along with nice proof numbers and especially great Type – they had just won the lottery! We really appreciate that Alicia & Bill gave us the opportunity to purchase the bull – and we thought the name they gave him was perfect - IMPACT. Isn’t it great that natural selection is one genetic trait that has yet to be controlled.

PRIORITIES CHANGE OVER TIME, AND THAT’S OK!

As I first looked through our All-Ontario results this year, something stood out to me: I wasn’t seeing a lot of the household names that used to appear in our listing. I know for a fact that these farms still have great cows, and I’m sure they still take great pride in their animals. But it got me thinking: was it the COVID fatigue that many of us seem to be suffering from that kept them away from the shows? Or was it just the fact that life changed…gotten even busier than usual, somehow? Maybe a new family member at home had taken precedent, or perhaps even a new barn left little time over to attend shows this year. Yes, our 2022 All-Ontario Competition looks a little different this year in terms of the winners, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing.

Priorities change over time, and that’s ok! As we move through this year, I encourage each of you to come up with an aspect of your life that you’d like to put on a pedestal this year. I’m not calling it a New Year’s Resolution, because by the time you’re reading this, most of us will have already broken those! I prefer to think of it as an area of your life you’d like to dedicate some time to. For me, it’s health and wellness. Sure, I’d like the scale to magically read less the next time I step onto it, but more importantly, I’d like to prioritize sleep, level up my vitamin game, and get outside for at least an hour each day to walk, skate or toboggan with my kids. And if that must take time away from other areas of my life (I’m looking at you, laundry pile!) then I’m perfectly ok with that!

What will you prioritize in 2023 that you put off last year? Will it be starting to work on that succession plan, finally? Will it be talking to your lender about financing a new heifer facility or buying more land or quota? Maybe it’s attending more industry events or taking a night off every month to go out for supper with your spouse. Whatever your area of focus, be selfish about it. Put in the time to ensure 2023 is one you’ll look back on with pride.

WISHING EVERYONE SAFE TRAVEL AND A HAPPY, PROSPEROUS NEW YEAR!

WWow, what a crazy couple of weeks of weather we’ve been having - from extreme cold and windy snow storms to warm and balmy temperatures. Let’s hope Mother Nature got all the craziness out of her system in 2022!

For many of us, winter brings meeting season – whether it is your local Holstein Club AGM, District Barn Tours, Milk Committee meetings, Soil and Crop meetings, Grain Farmers ... there seems to be no end to the meeting schedule. Although the lure of a warm and cozy Lazy Boy recliner is strong on these cold wintery days, I would encourage you to attend as many meetings as you can, not only for the social aspect of connecting with your neighbor, but many of these meetings are hosted in barns where we can observe the latest technologies or have guest speakers that are eager to share their knowledge with us. We are never too old to learn something new.

The 2023 Convention Committee has been working hard to organize a great time for us in Ottawa and are excited to be hosting the District Barn Tours and the EastGen Evening of Excellence, where we will recognize our All-Ontario Award winners and the newest Ontario Master Breeders on February 21st. This will be followed by our Annual General Meeting on February 22nd. Details on tickets and hotel reservations are on page 42, as well as on our website and social media.

Other branch events to look forward to are the District Barn Tours hosted by Oxford in the Western District, Dufferin in West-Central and stay tuned for details on East-Central District. I encourage you to also keep a close eye on our social media, as well, for information on Judges Workshops and the Ontario Dairy Youth Award applications.

ROCKWOOD AREA FARMERS LIGHT IT UP!

On December 8, Rockwood area farmers held true to tradition and lit it up during their 30th annual Rockwood Farmers’ Santa Claus Parade of Lights. Hundreds of parade-goers came to enjoy the decorated tractors and farm equipment, which included combines, sprayers, a tree cutter and several manure spreaders. Because let’s face it, nothing says Merry Christmas like a lit-up manure spreader! The parade made its way slowly through the community, one piece of equipment brighter than the next, and delighted visitors during its three-hour run.

Success at Cnossome HARD WORK PAVES THE WAY FOR

Buying a farm and starting your own Holstein herd isn’t easy. But that is exactly what Symen and Andrea Cnossen did in 2009. Today their attractive Cnossome Holsteins farm at Brunner, ON, is a testament to the hard work, drive and commitment this Perth County couple has put in to making their dairy operation viable and successful. Symen and Andrea’s story begins in Europe. Both grew up on dairy farms, Symen in the Netherlands and Andrea in Switzerland. Symen was 17 years old when he went to work for a few months in 1997 at John and Tineke Boschma’s Bosside Holsteins farm in Prince Edward Island (now located in Wisconsin). “That was where the Holstein fires started,” states Symen. “I saw these beautiful Holstein cows in Canada. I wanted those kinds of cows and was determined to come back to Canada once I was done with school.” About the same time, his parents, Rudy and Hinke Cnossen, had also started thinking about looking at dairy farms in Ontario because of the agriculture circumstances in Holland. In 2000, the Cnossen family bought a farm at Elora and immigrated to Canada. They established Cnossen Holsteins, which is currently run by Symen’s brother Harry. Andrea was 12 years old when her parents, Josef and Vreni Tschudi, moved their family to Ontario in 1992. They established Smilebrook Holsteins at Mitchell, where the farm is now run by Andrea’s brother Thomas. “I have always loved good cows,” Andrea says, “and I used to tag along to every show and sale with my Dad.”

After graduating with a degree in Animal Science from the University of Guelph, Andrea got a job working for Shur-Gain. That is how she met Symen. The couple married in 2007. The first calf they ever bought together under their own Cnossome prefix was a Jasper granddaughter of Rgncrest-RH Durham Bliss VG-89-USA-GMD, a full sister to Regancrest-PR Barbie. A daughter from that original calf, Cnossome Circuit Babe VG-88, would go on to make 123,517 kg of 4.8% milk lifetime for them, have five Superior Lactations, earn one Super 3 award, and pass her high fat trait on to all her offspring. Symen and Andrea decided to buy their own dairy farm in 2009. With

few ongoing farms for sale at the time, Andrea says, “We started looking for a farm where we could just start milking right away because we needed money to make this work.” An empty tie-stall barn on a farm near Brunner fit the bill. “When we bought this farm, the first bank we approached told us we were nuts and were never going to make this work. In fact, quite a few people told us that,” she recalls. “Dairy Farmers of Ontario (DFO) had just started the New Entrant program and we were one of the first ones to be accepted into it,” says Symen. “We started with 35 kilos of milk quota. We bought 25 cows. We didn’t buy the cheapest cows. We wanted good cows. I also brought along 30 heifers that I owned from my parents’ farm. That’s how we started. Both Andrea and I did all the work, plus had part-time jobs off the farm for a few years to make ends meet. And we had little kids. It was really tough, but we did it. We worked hard. We had no choice.” One of the initial cows they bought, an Igniter who was only classified Good, would ultimately prove her worth producing three generations of EX cows carrying the Cnossome prefix – Avalanche Gabi EX-90, Epic Greta EX-90-2E and Sid Georgia EX-91.

In 2014-15, Andrea and Symen’s parents both transferred some milk quota to them as part of a farm succession plan. “That really gave us the wind in our backs,” remarks Andrea. “Up until that time, I wouldn’t say we were struggling financially,” says Symen, “but it was tight. With the additional quota we were able to get things rolling.” With the barn now full, but their existing cows unable to fill the added quota, the couple built an addition onto their barn and put in another 20 tie-stalls. Even then, the Cnossens continued to buy quota. “When you are financially stressed, buying quota is a good investment for down the road. It is like a ball that starts rolling and gets bigger. Things go easier,” says Symen.

The Cnossens made other improvements to their 100-acre farm too, including tiling all the land. They rent another 170 acres and grow alfalfa, corn for silage and grain, soybeans and winter wheat. A few years ago, however, they reached another critical juncture. Their tiestall facility was full again. The ventilation was bad in the barn and

dry and transition cows weren’t doing well because they had no extra space. The heifer barn was falling apart. Their milking equipment was 30 years old and needed replacing. “We looked at putting another piece on the tie-stall barn but realized we probably would need to hire full-time help. We had struggled to get even part-time help so we saw that as an issue. We decided we needed something that the two of us could handle ourselves,” explains Andrea.

“At the end of the day, we are looking for the True Type cow. We want a profitable, correct, trouble-free and long-lasting animal that produces daughters much like herself. What is good for this farm is what we focus on and that is breeding for profitable cows.”

the kids would come to the barn with us. They still do. Our kids are very engaged in the farm today and are a lot of help,” say their proud parents. Ben and Ella are now in 4-H and both boys play hockey. The Cnossens believe it is important to be involved in the dairy industry. Andrea is President of the Perth County Holstein Club and Symen is part of the Perth County Milk Committee.

When they penciled the costs out, the Cnossens made the decision to build a new free-stall barn and parlour in 2020. The new barn features “tunnel ventilation”. “We really like our automated tunnel ventilation system because during the summer it keeps the barn really cool and comfortable for the cows,” says Symen. “Heat stress is not an issue anymore. Cows stay really persistent for production and reproduction. And it also eliminates problems with flies.” The freestalls are bedded with sand. The herd is divided into four groups in the barn – fresh cows, 2-year-olds, dry cows, and a bigger milking group. The cows are milked in a double-10 GEA parlour and fed a one group TMR of haylage, corn silage, supplement and chopped straw. Fresh cows also have unlimited access to dry hay.

The Cnossen family currently milks 85 cows who average 14,082 kg milk, 560 kg fat, 458 kg protein (316-336-320). Their herd includes 5 EX, 54 VG and 25 GP cows. “When we started to classify, we had 33% VG cows. Now we are at 70% VG,” smiles Andrea. “While we love good typed cows, our cows have to milk!,” she stresses. “Milk is number one here because we have to make money. It also helps if they have a really great personality. A cow’s personality is important because our kids are in the barn with us all the time and we want it to be fun working with the cows.” As she and Symen state, “At the end of the day, we are looking for the True Type cow. We want a profitable, correct, troublefree and long-lasting animal that produces daughters much like herself. What is good for this farm is what we focus on and that is breeding for profitable cows.”

The farm’s calves are now housed in single pens, and then bedded pack, group pens, in the old tie-stall barn until they reach breeding age when they move to free-stalls. “Our goal is to calve our heifers out at 1 year, 11 months, but 2 years is perfect. You have a bigger animal, she can handle the calving easier and produces more persistently in that first lactation than if you calve her out earlier,” observes Symen. Joining Andrea and Symen on their journey has been their three children: Ben, 14, Ella, 12, and Ryan, 8. The kids have been actively involved in the farm since they were born. “We used to have the baby monitor in the barn with us in the morning and then every

One of the best genetic investments the Cnossens made early on were some Windbrook embryos from the Ravenswell Lydia EX-92-USADOM 19* family that they bought from Larry Krantz of Carldot Farms, Stratford. “Larry was really good to us because he knew we were starting up,” says Andrea. Windbrook Leanne EX-90, who made 15,181 kg milk, 5.0% fat, 3.7% protein (289-387-322), and her full sister, Love VG-86 with 15,064 kg milk, 4.5% fat, 3.4% protein (311-383-329). The pair completed 13 generations of EX/VG and left a lot of descendants in the herd. Another group of Beacon embryos they purchased from Krantz gave rise to Carldot Beacon Daisy VG-85 and a GP full sister who were backed by eight EX/VG dams in the Hanoverhill Designer Miss EX 12* family. “Boy did they milk and so do their descendants,” exclaims Andrea. In April 2022, the Cnossens and Krantz bought an October 2021 Lambda heifer together, Valiant Spero Lambda Lotta. She also traces back to Ravenswell Lydia through the 2010 Royal Winter Fair Grand Champion, Winterbay Goldwyn Lotto EX-95-USA. “Lambda Lotta has the numbers and type and we are going to start flushing her soon,” says Andrea.

A recent purchase at the Welane Dispersal in Elmira has the Cnossens really excited. She is Martin-View Crushabull Bingo, a March 2021 Crushabull heifer from a VG-86 Doorman daughter of the popular Fraeland Goldwyn Bonnie EX-95-3E 16* at Fraeland Farms, Fergus. Bingo is A2A2 and due in the spring.

With their farm and herd now firmly established, the Cnossens’ next goals are “fine-tuning” things and paying more attention to the genetics they have. They began genomic testing all of their baby calves in early 2021. They are using genomics as a “guide” to help them identify the top and bottom 25% of their animals and then take that into account when breeding those animals. They have had some genomic “surprises” like Cnossome Mirand Nikita, a November 2021, Polled, Red Carrier Mirand daughter who came through with a GPA for Conformation of +13. She was Ella’s 4-H project calf this past year. “This is what I mean by fine-tuning,” says Symen. “When we started

with genomics there were actually certain animals that we didn’t think were as high as what they were. We are going to pay more attention now to the genetic potential in our herd and then use that information to get our herd to the next level.”

Personable and down-to-earth, the Cnossens are grateful for the encouragement they received when they decided to farm. “When you start up a farm, and are financially stressed, you need to surround yourself with positive thinking people, people who will give you strength to overcome the hurdles you face,” says Symen. “I always say: We learn from our mistakes in the past, but we should never look back.”

Symen, now 42, and Andrea, 43, credit “hard work” and “focusing on their cows” as the keys to their success. “The one thing I think we have done right is focus on our cows,” reflects Andrea. “We bought good cows, bred them to good bulls, fed them good feed, and used lots of bedding to keep them in good shape. There is no secret to our management. You just need to do it well. Our cows pay for everything so we started with them. We don’t leave the barn until every problem is addressed.” And then, add the couple, you also need some “luck”. “We bought our farm just before land prices went through the roof. We built our barn literally before Covid and building materials skyrocketed. We have gotten lucky a few times.”

The Cnossens conclude, “While it hasn’t been easy, we really appreciate how far we have come and what we have today at our family farm. We don’t farm for the money, glory or fame. We do it for the way of life. That is why we farm.” It is that dedication and love for what they do that makes Symen and Andrea Cnossen and their family a great asset to Ontario’s, and Canada’s, Holstein and dairy industry.

This was truly the trip of a lifetime! It was an amazing opportunity to get to meet and know other young farmers in Ontario, while experiencing some of the best cattle that Western Canada had to offer! The camaraderie and welcoming spirit of every person we met in Alberta was truly humbling.

After two years of interruption due to the Covid pandemic, the Young Breeders School (YBS) was back as part of the Agricultural Fair of Battice this year to mark its 20th anniversary. The YBS welcomed 123 young people representing 17 different nations from August 31 to September 4, 2022. The five-day training was provided in four languages and organised by the awé groupe in collaboration with the Agricultural Fair of Battice.

YOUNG BREEDERS SCHOOL –A CANADIAN SUCCESS STORY!

This past summer, Holstein Canada sent six delegates to represent our country at the Young Breeders School held in Battice, Belgium. This year’s delegates were James Pruim (SK), Alexandra Labbè (QC), Savannah Crack (QC), Madison Larade (NS), Derrick Knill (ON) and Matt Lange (ON).

After two cancelled flights, a connection delay, and filing a report for our lost luggage, the team finally made it to the fairgrounds in Battice! Upon our late arrival, we were notified that our display had been misplaced, so with some quick thinking and Savannah’s French abilities, we were able to gather some supplies and create a new display. After a bit of a hectic morning, our first day was comprised of bedding and washing workshops followed by some free time to begin working with our pre-assigned heifers. Later that evening, we were provided instructions on how we were to feed and water our string and went over the judges’ expectations of us for the remainder of the week. Each morning, we were to have our animals fed, watered, washed, bedded, and laying down relaxing by seven o’clock on as firm of a pack as physically possible to achieve full marks.

Our first evening in Belgium wound down by meeting our host families and enjoying a traditional Belgian dinner party where we had our first introduction to Belgian culture. The next few days were filled with workshops for marketing, clipping, show day preparation, classification, showmanship, as well as several classes of judging officiated by Canada’s Marc Comtois. Throughout the week we continued to work with our heifers and build connections with the other teams at the competition. We grew especially close to the teams from Australia and France, among others.

Our first show day was a conformation competition where the breeders were invited to watch their respective animals parade

around the ring. Our fitting abilities were judged as the animals marshalled for the ring and there were bonus points available for the top five showman in each class, as determined by the leaders of the school. Three of our heifers were in the top three of their respective classes which was a great start for Team Canada! The evening after the conformation show was spent networking with our fellow competitors at the Gastronomical Tour, a social event where each team was asked to bring a food and drink to serve at their pack that represented their country. Team Canada’s Maple Taffy and Canadian Club turned out to be a crowd favourite!

Our final day of competition was the showperson Contest and Canada had a great day! Derrick and Alexandra placed 1st in their heats, and Savannah and I placed 2nd advancing the four of us to the final. Of the 20 participants in the final, Alexandra, Derrick and myself were selected as the Top Six being considered for Grand Champion Showperson. We were all thrilled when Alexandra was named Grand Champion!

After the conclusion of the show came the awards ceremony where, in addition to her showmanship victory, Alexandra was also named Honourable Mention Champion Fitter! We were ecstatic with our team’s results when it was announced that five of our Teammates made the Top 12 in a competition of nearly 150 participants in the Fitting Competition! THE TD CANADIAN 4-H DAIRY CLASSIC

After a two-year break due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the TD Canadian 4-H Dairy Classic returned to the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair from November 7-8, 2022. Competitors came from five different provinces to compete and left nothing on the line while showcasing their animals during the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair’s 100th Anniversary. A total of 313 4-H’ers from Ontario, Quebec, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia took part in the event. Teams arrived and began to move in early Sunday morning to set up their displays and settle in their calves. Over the course of the prestigious competition, 4-H members competed individually in both showmanship and conformation, and vied as teams for Best Exhibit, Best Group of Three Calves and Premier County.

Dominic Fortier of St-Christophe d’Arthabaska, QC, was tasked with evaluating 4-H’ers on their showmanship skills in the Semex Ring of Excellence on Monday, with Kyle Rivington of Carp, ON, as his Associate Judge. Over the course of the high-caliber competition, Fortier competently selected top showman from several heats of Junior, Intermediate and Senior show people and chose champions from each respective group. The main event in Showmanship culminated just after 8 p.m. Monday night, when Tyler Canning was named Grand Champion

On Tuesday November 8, Conformation Judge Chad Ryan of Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, placed the many heats and classes of top 4-H Holsteins, Jerseys, Ayrshires and other coloured breeds from across the country. He chose his first-place Fall Heifer, MS-Aol Realist-RED-ET, shown by Nolan Allardyce of Brant County, as Grand Champion Calf. Reserve went to the first-place Spring Yearling, Kentville Chief Bodacious, shown by Keaton Phoenix of Durham West. Bosdale Lambda Lusteria, the first-place Summer Yearling shown by Rhett Terpstra of Perth County, was Honourable Mention.

This year’s “Breeder of Distinction” was Fraeland Holsteins of Fergus, Ont. Steve Fraser and his father, Jack Fraser, were on hand to bring greetings to participants and generously donated five Stanton Alligator embryos from Fraeland Emilio Blizzard EX-90, a fourth generation Excellent from their world-renowned Bonnie family. The winner of this year’s embryos was Taylor Vandermeulen of Northumberland County.

Nolan Allardyce – Taking his place in the Ring of Excellence

IIT’S BEEN OVER TWO MONTHS SINCE NOLAN ALLARDYCE CELEBRATED HIS BIG WIN WITH CHAMPION CALF AT THE TD CANADIAN 4-H DAIRY CLASSIC, BUT HE’S STILL RIDING THE HIGH. THE 22-YEAR-OLD BRANTFORD NATIVE KNEW HIS CALF WAS SPECIAL BUT HAD NO IDEA SHE WOULD BE AT THE TOP OUT OF OVER 300 BEAUTIES IN THE RING OF EXCELLENCE. AND

LAST YEAR OF 4-H, HE PICKED THE PERFECT TIME TO PULL OFF A BIG WIN!

Nolan’s journey to the winner’s circle has been backed by over a decade of hard work coming up through the ranks of the Brant 4-H Dairy Club. He joined 4-H at the age of 10, and although he has taken clubs in crops and curling, his focus – and love – has always been dairy. “My dad (Glenn)’s family milked cows ‘til I was nine and I was always interested,” he says. With his dad having shown in 4-H growing up, his mom, Tammy, serving as a leader and 4-H President in Brant County, and Nolan’s older siblings, Collin and Serena being involved in the program, joining the Brant Dairy Club was a no-brainer. He’s had some influential leaders along the way, including Gord Vellenga, the late Jean Charlton, and Terry Green, all of whom have been instrumental in what, looking back, has been a very successful and rewarding 4-H career.

Although winning Champion Calf at the Classic has been the cherry on the top of it all, some of Nolan’s most cherished moments over the years are rooted in smaller achievements that didn’t always yield a ribbon. Showing locally at the Paris Fair every year, for example, has been an annual highlight, as has purchasing heifers with his brother under their Allarway prefix (several of which have gone on to earn All-Ontario and All-Canadian titles) and forming special partnerships and mentorships that have opened more doors and opportunities than Nolan ever thought possible.

One such mentor who is top of mind is Gerald Vanderlip of Valmar Holsteins in Brant County. Living a few minutes down the road from Gerald growing up, Nolan milked cows there after school

and weekends during high school. When he and Collin first became interested in purchasing heifers, it only made sense to ask Gerald if they could house them at his place. Gerald had the space and was happy to provide guidance to the two brothers along the way. When it came time for Nolan to purchase an animal for his final year of 4-H, he knew he wanted a red one. “That’s kind of what got us started at Vanderlips,” he explains.

After missing out on a few at local sales, the Allardyce brothers and long-time partner, Colton Oughtred of Sunny Terrace Holsteins in Brantford, eyed MS-AOL Realist-Red-ET in the Best of Juniper Sale last spring. “They were selling her and a full sister,” says Nolan. “We liked her, though. Joel Phoenix was at the sale and gave us the low-down.” Nolan admits it felt weird not seeing her in person, but trusted Joel’s judgement and liked what he saw in her photo and pedigree online. Realist has 10 Excellent dams backing her, including several respected brood cows including Glenridge Citation Roxy EX-CAN 6* and Hanoverhill Tony Rae EX-US-3E 5*. Having to register Realist as his 4-H project before even meeting her felt odd, but with all this to back her up, Nolan took the chance and went for it. He was all-in.

The day she arrived at Vanderlips, Collin got her washed and sent a snapchat photo to Nolan, who couldn’t wait to finish up his day at work and go to see her. “She wasn’t quite ready for the show, but she led really well,” he recalls. Nolan and Realist had their fare share of success in the show ring in the leadup to the Classic, including

finishing as 3rd Fall Heifer at Brant-Wentworth, 1st 4-H Senior Calf at Autumn Opportunity, as well as 1st Fall Heifer and Honourable Mention Junior Champion at the same show. By the time of the Classic, Nolan was feeling confident and comfortable in his choice. “I knew all year she was probably the best calf I’ve ever had,” he says of Realist. But he also knew the stakes would be high in Toronto and many other competitors would be showing exceptional calves as well. Realist pulled out a first-place finish in her class and was pulled along with five others, to vie for Grand Champion. “When the judge was coming over towards me, I was just stuck in the moment,” says Nolan. “It felt surreal. It’s what I’ve always tried to do.” Nolan’s parents and brother and sister were all in the stands to watch him pull off the win, as were many family members watching online. He shared a big hug with Collin at the edge of the ring, before taking his place in the winner’s circle for photos. Nolan’s girlfriend, Clarissa McCallum, whom he says has been instrumental in helping develop his skills as a leadsman, was along ringside to share in the special moment.

This past Classic felt different for Nolan for several reasons, and not just because he had the Grand Champion. It marked only the second time he got his own calf ready for the big show without his brother. “I learned most of my clipping skills from him,” he explains. He’s also picked up some finer details from others he’s clipped with, including Ryan and Justin Crowley. Nolan credits the clipping work he’s done in the past two years for helping him build his skills and is thankful for those who have trusted him with their animals. He has been fortunate to fit animals for such prominent breeders as Winright, Riverdown, Willowcreek and Oakfield Corners.

Nolan has owned or partnered on 20 animals to date and currently owns animals (mostly heifers) under the Allarway prefix. He is always working hard to build up his cattle-buying fund, and his recent hire

last May as a Relationship Manager with FCC helps him realize that goal. Working out of FCC’s Simcoe office, Nolan manages a portfolio of 250 customers including cash croppers, and beef, ginseng and vegetable farmers and manages their lending requests. He was hired on with the organization after having worked for them in the Summer of 2021 and part-time when he returned to finish his last year at the University of Guelph. “Every day is different,” Nolan says of the job, “and that’s what I like about it.” He’d like to get into some dairy accounts in the future, but for now, loves the fact that he gets to work in agriculture every day. “It’s kind of fun of seeing the end product; seeing people achieve their goals and being able to help them is very rewarding.”

Nolan took the four-year Agricultural Business program while he was at Guelph and graduated in the Spring of 2022, just before starting full-time at FCC. While at Guelph, Nolan was part of the College Royal for four years, acting as the Treasurer for the last two. He had a lot of fun during his time at school and made sure his time in class was broken up by the many social events university life has to offer: participating in Wednesday night pubs, joining a slew of intramural sports, and forming deep friendships with others in the Aggie cluster, several of which he already knew through showing. “Never underestimate the connections you make through 4-H,” he says to that end.

In addition to building lasting relationships, Nolan has some straightforward advice that has helped him achieve success over his 4-H career: “Wash your heifer, work with her, spend that time at home; that’s the biggest thing and it will eventually pay off. It’s hard, sometimes, to put in the time late at night or after you’ve worked all day, but you’re more apt to do it when it’s your own.”

“And,” he says with a grin, “I would encourage anyone who’s thinking of it, to buy an animal...though it’ll probably spiral into more than one!”

1. Describe your family’s history with Holsteins.

The Elmcroft prefix has been around since the 40’s. My grandfather and father were both herdsmen for the farm. Dad became a partner in the 70’s. We became sole owners in the 80’s, with my wife Kerri and I joining later. Patrick and Rachel joined a few years ago. We are a 3x Master Breeder herd with a classification of 18 EX 25 VG 5 GP and a rolling herd average of 264-276-269.

2. What are your breeding goals?

I like bigger cows than most today. They have to have good udders and mobility to go outside. They must milk and test well, and last several lactations.

3. What genetic tools are most important in your breeding program?

We use classification and milk recording.

4. Describe the ultimate/ideal cow for your operation:

I like large, framey cows. They need to produce above average, and score high VG or EX. They should have good pedigrees and transmit well.

5. What cow in your barn is currently the “Heart of the Herd”?

Elmcroft Dundee Caria VG 6* isn’t here today but her daughters and their offspring are as “can’t miss” as any. A few years ago we purchased a Diamondback grand daughter of T-Triple-T Dundee Paige EX 96 4E. It’s early, but she appears to be making the right kind.

6. What are you most proud of in your herd/operation?

The fact that we are a family farm is important. We have several cow families that breed really well, and cows that last a lot longer than the industry average. I would like to think we are recognized as good “cow people”.

7. If you could improve one thing in your herd/operation, what would it be?

I would like to have better dry cow facilities. A few years ago we diversified into organic turkeys, and I would like to expand there as well.

8. If you could have ANY cow standing in your barn, who would it be and why?

Starbrite Lyster Lyndsay EX 96 5E 6*. She was a great individual that aged incredibly well. She was from a really good breeding family and transmitted that to her offspring that produced well. A cow everyone wants to breed and own.

9. What is one thing you would tell a young farmer starting out? Surround yourself with people who are concerned about your success and not just their own. Not everything will go as intended, have a plan B and learn from mistakes.

10. How do you use genomic information in your herd and what are your thoughts on the future of genomics?

We use more young sires than I ever thought we would, otherwise we use genomics very little. We make breeding decisions using our eyes instead of the computer. Everyone has to use the tools available as they see fit.

11. How many cows do you flush each year? How do you market your embryos that are for sale?

We flush two to three cows per year, mostly for ourselves. Embryos have never been a huge part of our income.

12. Being in the breeding business, what traits do you find sell the best? What trait do you value most?

Everyone that comes in is still attracted to the higher type cows, which we prefer to have. People want young healthy cows with good udders.

13. Which bulls do you feel has had the most impact on your herd over the years and today?

Our heifer pens are full of Master, Moment, Sidekick, and Dempsey daughters. Bulls like Dempsey, Jasper, Storm, and Rudolph have worked well for us in the past.

14. What are the management practices in place on your farm that you feel contribute the most to the success of your operation? Why?

Being a small herd with a limited land base, we need to put up good quality feed to try and keep extra feed costs down. Kerri feeds the calves and gets them off to a tremendous start. After that, we try and use common sense raising them.
