HISTORY OF PATTAYA Pattaya - Thailand’s capital of fun is a popular resort on the North Gulf Coast of Eastern Thailand, 150 km south-east of Bangkok. Once a sleepy fishing town, Pattaya first boomed as an R & R spot during the Vietnam War and has been a popular tourism destination ever since. Currently, Pattaya is booming and the opening of the Suvarnabhumi Airport has made visiting easier than ever. Pattaya is popular not only as a beach resort and for its entertainment, nightlife and shopping, but also for the broad selection of recreational activities it caters for, from golf and horseback riding to bungee jumping, karting and shooting - not to mention a wide variety of watersports such as scuba diving, jet-skiing, sailing, water skiing, windsurfing and kitesurfing. Pattaya, unlike other beach resorts, shows no respite after sundown, Pattaya’s nightlife is unique and fascinating with Walking Street, South Pattaya in the centre of it all. This is the most popular place to go amongst tourists and expats here you will find many go go bars, beer bars, discos, street entertainers and the odd ladyboy. Food is another one of the highlights of any trip to Pattaya. From giant prawns to spicy som tam salad, there is every imaginable cuisine here. Cajun, Chinese, Indian, Italian, English, French, Vietnamese, German, Russian and many more. Today Pattaya attracts annually more then a million tourists from all over the world. Pattaya provides high standard hotels, restaurants, sports, entertainment and shopping. It really has it all and a whole lot more. history of pattaya | THEPATTAYAGUIDE

GETTING AROUND Pattaya is a very easy city to get around although the busy traffic causes frequent hold-ups at peak times (07:00 – 09:00 and 15:00 – 18:30), particularly on the major roads. Unusually, for Thailand, there are no tuk-tuks in Pattaya, so everyone usually gets around on the baht-buses (songtaews) or on motorbike taxis. There are literally hundreds of both all over Pattaya. MOTORBIKE TAXIS Motorbike taxis are a way of life in Pattaya. They are your best bet of getting around if you want to get somewhere quickly or conveniently, particularly at busy times. On every corner in Pattaya, no matter how small the Soi (street), you will find a gathering of motorbike taxis. They are operate 24 hours a day 7 days per week and provide a very convenient service. However, this option is not for the faint-hearted and can be dangerous. These guys, and the occasional lady will take you anywhere but agree on a price first! RENTING CARS AND MOTORBIKES Another practical way to get around Pattaya is by renting a motorbike. Most people simply don’t have the nerve to tackle the traffic and bizarre driving habits here, but if you do, renting a motorbike is your best option for getting around Pattaya. You can rent a motorbike for around 200 baht a day or cheaper for longer periods. There are scooter type bikes which are actually extremely easy to ride, with no clutch when changing gears, and very reliable, larger motorbikes are freely available as well, but obviously more expensive. 10

THEPATTAYAGUIDE | Getting Around

In Thailand it is illegal to ride a motorbike or to be a passenger without a helmet, to ride with more than two passengers, to undertake in traffic, to go the wrong way down one-way streets, to exceed the speed limit, or, to jump red lights, which means very little to anyone in Thailand and driving habits here are dreadful. If you decide to rent a motorbike, make sure your medical insurance is up-to-date as accidents here are a daily occurrence. Cars can be hired too, but driving them in and around the city is likely to be a frustrating experience, particularly at school times, market days, rush hours and on Sukhumvit Road. There are many car rental companies around the city with prices starting at around 500 baht a day for the older cars, to a more realistic 1200+ baht for more modern or four wheel drive vehicles. WARNING… Driving habits in Thailand are appalling and most drivers are quite irresponsible and ignore simple safety rules. In contrast to the Thai’s usual polite and peaceful behaviour, they become quite inconsiderate behind the wheel. Be very wary of your speed and always look out for bad drivers, Pattaya is full of them. Unlike many Western countries, it’s very easy to pass a driving test here, so many drivers have little or no experience of driving either in town or on main roads. Many simply don’t have a licence at all or any awareness of road rules. Be prepared at any time for other drivers to suddenly pull out in front of you without even looking, stop without warning, overtake dangerously (and on the inside) and ignore motorcyclists. Some people just stop and park where it suits them, weave through the traffic with a death wish, ride the wrong way up the road into oncoming traffic and more. Do pay careful attention and drive conservatively. Accidents are regular in Pattaya and when they do occur, the offender is usually reluctant to accept any responsibility, should the worst happen however, the Pattaya police and ambulance services are exceptionally good, as well as being very quick to the scene.Getting Around Getting Around | THEPATTAYAGUIDE

GOOD FOOD GUIDE With a wealth of international restaurants offering delicious food. Pattaya is truly the crossroads of cuisine in Asia. French, Mexican, German, ltalian, Indian, Chinese, Scandinavian, Korean, Japanese and of course, Thai plus many other varieties of restaurant are located within the city. For most visitors to Pattaya the experience of new and interesting dishes is an exciting alternative to the traditional foods available at home. However, along with wonderful Thai dishes, one should sample the culinary delights available from other countries. Try “Kimji” a type of Korean spicy salad or maybe “sizzling Fajitas” a popular Mexican dish. Also, why not take this opportunity to find new ways of cooking traditional ingredients… there are now several cooking schools around the city where for a nominal fee you can learn to cook local dishes as well as go shopping to local markets and buy the ingredients you will need. Local specialities include: Tom Yam Gung (spicy prawn soup), Gaeng Kiewan (green spicy curry). If you like your food “hot” then try some of the food served from the vast number of vending carts across the city. At these you can sample such delicacies as: Som Tam (spicy salad) or Hoy Tord (fried mussels or oysters with egg) and the amazing variety of seafood. 16

CAFE DES AMIS FRENCH BISTRO RESTAURANT REVIEW This month the team at the Pattaya Guide decided we would enter into the abundance of restaurant review floating around Pattaya and write one from our very own experience. We opted to choose a relatively new but much talked about restaurant named Cafe Des Amis. This is quaint, elegant, French style Bistro and wine bar is located in a quiet area at the end of soi 11 off Thappraya Road just 3mins taxi ride from walking street towards Jomtien. The restaurant and experience lived up to all the good things we had been hearing and we had a wonderful meal and very enjoyable evening We were greeted on arrival by a charming young Thai lady called Pia the Matradee, and friendly owner Blu. There is a spacious bar lounge area where guests can casually enjoy a drink, cocktails or wine by the glass before entering the main dining room. The bar area is comfortable and beautifully decorated. We were made to feel very welcome and felt very relaxed in Blu’s company. The ambience is wonderful, with a French provincial feel to it. You can see immediately that Blu and Pia have spent time training the very professional service staff who work very efficiently around the restaurant and in a team, very rare in Thailand. The dining area is decorated in cool burnt

ochre with cream surroundings, the tables are dressed in a classical European style with white linens. We enjoying a Chilled Mojito cocktail and a Singapore sling in the bar lounge as we perused the Food Menu. For starters we tried the Foie de Volaille Salade. 190 baht (Marinated Chicken Liver with fried bacon on a bed of dressed lettuce leaves) and Parma Ham and Mango Salad 220 baht (Served with a Balsamic Reduction and Mango Coulis) which were both light and delicious. For main courses we ordered Lobster and Crab Thermidore 650 baht, ( Fresh Rock Lobster & Crab Meat in a white wine sauce with mushrooms & Gruyere Cheese) and Chicken Chasseur 390 baht (the French classic Tarragon sauce) Both dishes again were outstanding. Wine drinkers who visit cafe des amis are recommended to try the outstanding French house wine at 790 baht per bottle. We moved back into the bar lounge and finished with liquor coffees. As we sat reflecting on an enjoyable meal we were introduced to the executive Chef Mark Rowe 41yrs from England who chatted with us for some time about his weekly specials, his working experience and life in Thailand in general. Mark has over 15yrs experience in a French Kitchen and has worked in Thailand for a number of years. A very modest Mark, who created, developed and perfected the menu at CafĂŠ Des amis gave a lot a praise to his Thai staff for the standard the restaurant has reached and maintains. All in all our experience was delightful and we can confidently recommend our readers to try this hidden oasis. You will not be disappointed! The restaurant is open at 4pm daily (Closed on Tuesdays) Enquiries: 08402 64989 RESTAURANT REVIEW | THEPATTAYAGUIDE

THAI CUISINE Thai cuisine is considered by many to be among the best in the world. It is a blend of Asian and European influences created through centuries of trade between continents. Rice, fish, vegetables and herbs feature prominently in the Thai diet, although meat is less common as animals were required for farming. The Thai people have added their own ingenuity to their dishes, using influences from Portuguese traders who brought chillies, Indians who provided curries and spices, and the Chinese method of hot frying in a wok. A typical Thai meal is very much a communal affair, with all dishes served at once with rice. Thai Cuisine is well-known for being hot and spicy and for its balance of five fundamental flavors in each dish or the overall meal - hot (spicy), sour, sweet, salty, and bitter (optional). Although popularly considered as a single cuisine, Thai food would be more accurately described as four regional cuisines corresponding to the four main regions of the country: Northern, Northeastern (or Isan), Central, and Southern, each cuisine sharing similar foods or derived from those of neighboring countries. Southern curries, for example, tend to contain coconut milk and fresh turmeric, while northeastern dishes often include lime juice. The cuisine of Northeastern (or Issan) Thailand is heavily influenced by Laos. Many popular dishes eaten in Thailand were originally Chinese dishes which were introduced to Thailand mainly by Teochew people who make up the majority of the Thai Chinese. Such dishes include Jok, Kway teow Rad Na, Khao Kha Moo (also known as Moo Paloh) and Khao Mun Gai. Thai food is known for its enthusiastic use of fresh (rather than dried) herbs and spices as well as fish sauce. Thai food is popular in many Western countries especially in Australia, New Zealand, some countries in Europe such as the United Kingdom, as well as the United States, and Canada. Instead of a multiple main course with side dishes found in Western cuisine, a

28

THEPATTAYAGUIDE | Thai Cuisine

Thai full meal typically consists of either a single dish or rice khao (Thai: ข้าว) with many complementary dishes served at the same time.

Rice is a staple component of Thai cuisine, as it is of most Asian cuisines. The highly prized, sweet-smelling jasmine rice is indigenous to Thailand. This naturally aromatic long-grained rice grows in abundance in the verdant patchwork of paddy fields that blanket Thailand’s central plains. Steamed rice is accompanied by highly aromatic curries, stir-frys and other dishes, incorporating sometimes large quantities of chilies, lime juice and lemon grass. Curries, stir-frys and others may be poured onto the rice creating a single dish called khao rad gang (Thai: ข้าวราดแกง), a popular meal when time is limited. Sticky rice (khao neow, Thai: ข้าว เหนียว) is a unique variety of rice that contains an unusual balance of the starches present in all rice, causing it to cook up to a sticky texture. It is the daily bread of Laos and substitutes ordinary rice in rural Northern and Northeastern Thai cuisine, where Lao cultural influence is strong. Noodles, known in much of Southeast Asia by the Chinese name kway teow (Thai: ก๋วยเตีย๋ ว), are popular as well but usually come as a single dish, like the stirfried Pad Thai (Thai: ผัดไทย) or noodle soups. Many Chinese cuisine are adapted to suit Thai taste, such as kway teow rua (Thai: ก๋วยเตีย๋ วเรือ), a sour and spicy rice noodle soup. There is a uniquely Thai dish called nam prik (Thai: น้ำ พริก) which refers to a chilli sauce or paste. Each region has its own special versions. It is prepared by crushing together chillies with various ingredients such as garlic and shrimp paste using a mortar and pestle. It is then often served with vegetables such as cucumbers, cabbage and yard-long beans, either raw or blanched. The vegetables are dipped into the sauce and eaten with rice. Nam prik may also be simply eaten alone with rice or, in a bit of Thai and Western fusion, spread on toast. Often Thai food is served with a variety of spicy condiments to embolden dishes. This can range from dried chili pieces, or sliced chili peppers in Thai Cuisine | THEPATTAYAGUIDE

rice vinegar, to a spicy chili sauce such as the nam prik mentioned above. The ingredient found in almost all Thai dishes and every region of the country is nam pla (Thai น้ำ ปลา), a very aromatic and strong tasting fish sauce. Shrimp paste, a combination of ground shrimp and salt, is also extensively used. Below is list of popular Thai dishes served throughtout Thailand: BREAKFAST DISHES • Jok (Thai: โจ๊ก) - a rice porridge very commonly eaten in Thailand for breakfast. THE ROAD TO MANDALAY Having resided in Thailand for over seven years now I’ve seen and been on all the visa runs possible in fact Mongolia is one of only two Asian country I haven’t tried probably due to my horseman ship is not what it used to be, and not being a nuclear physicist North Korea somehow lacks appeal…so most of the time I book myself on a sky bound bean tin as I cannot handle sitting in a mini bus which promises the room of Dr Who’s tardiest but delivers u in matchbox Toy…ota . As I am working in Thailand I also need a work permit this means when I go to renew my visa I have to chop down half a rain forest to provide for all my company documentation, each country seems to have different rules and requirements which seems rather strange …add to this some of the most miserable people known to mankind often work the counter service, which can make it a drawn out process and sometimes your made to feel less welcome than a Somalian boarding an oil tanker.. Last year I decided to visit Burma or Myanmar as its now known...this was just before the regime decided to have a monk culling season.. Rangoon or Yangon is like stepping back in time with a mix of Asian and old colonialism, I found the people on the whole very friendly although very poor and temples take some beating if your into that sort of thing. I stayed in a medium class hotel and hired a taxi driver for my three day visit which worked out about 800 baht a day. His car was so old I had to walk in front waving a red flag...honest, it would of been refused entry to a scrap yard. So on my last day after playing the usual tourist I decided to visit the British Empire club. I had visions of the Mountbaton’s select X1 playing the Burma rifles at Croquet on the lawn, so I was disappointed to find an old building serving soggy pizza and Heineken with 2 pool tables and a dusty picture of Elizabeth II. After a quick chat the barman told me to go to the Strand hotel for a high tea ..as this was Rangoon’s premier hotel with a taste of days gone by. So off we set in our Datsun 120y weaving through piles of ox dung and human traffic slicks until we arrived at a huge Victorian building. We were greeted by a immaculately yellow clad bell boy who stood opened mouthed after the door fell off our car which he had just opened. Mahout my driver just grovelled, picked it up and staggered off

“Are you a resident sir” enquired the turban wearing doorman …..”errrr yes I am and I require high tea my good man “..I replied in my best Etonian voice… .”please follow me sir”…I entered into a huge lobby with an enormous picture of George the 5th starring down on me, I was then led into the dining area full of cane furniture, big fans and potted plants(back in index then!), in the corner was a gleaming Steinway waiting for Noel Coward. It was just as I imagined, I was then ambushed by ten musty feely touchy waiters …which resulted in a cramp attack in my calf ...with a screwed up face I ordered Darjeeling and the full works for $15 and as I waited in eerie silence I surveyed the room. In the corner sat Miss Marples I think she was dead and had rotted into the back of the chair with a fixed grin and an half knitted cat on her lap, in the other corner sat General Montgomery and captain Peacock choking on their fat cigars …I was back in 1922…sitting in a game of cluedo …mmmm the rev green in the library with a candlestick crossed my mind…then my tea arrived it was served in a solid silver pot accompanied by a silver cake stand filled with goodies. I was then offered the Financial Times and as I slurped with my pinky extended I noticed the paper was 2 years old. Then a voice from behind remarked…”very hot today sir”…”yes”.. I replied…”could be rain tomorrow”. ”oh” I said …”one should take an umbrella sir”…was this a Monty python sketch or for real, after polishing off 3 cups of cha and 25 items of scoff ..a very slim Chinese weasel with a black ratty moustache shuffled over and enquired …”will you be dining tonight sir”…. So thinking ...what the hell…I replied “yes I will and can I have my usual table and can you inform the chef General motors will be joining me about 8 pm” ……”umm” said the dining capt ..”I’m sorry sir I’m not familiar with you …..may I enquire for your name and room number” …”ok you got me fu man chew” …….”does one require the bill sir”….”yes please” …I paid the bill including a handsome tip whilst the bell boy summoned mahout who had just finished watering the trees… he zipped up and fired up the Datsun it then chugged up with plumes of smoke covering the hotels 1950’s Silver Shadow parked outside .I slid onto the stuffing less seat managing to position an old spring up my ***! like a fat nurse with a suppository.. And off we clattered to the nearest bar Brgds sg

LEARNING THAI BY MARK VERRALL

MARKVERRALL@HOTMAIL.COM

There are many people in the world who find it easy to learn a new language. I have a friend, Shaun, who is in that category. He speaks virtually fluent Thai & can read and write it. He even reads the Thai newspapers. Then there are those like myself who struggle with another lingo, who could never learn this tonal language in a gazillion years. I have more chance of learning ancient Aramaic from an alcoholic Russian with a strong Glaswegian accent. I have tried, believe me. After my first holiday here in 1979, Thailand became an obsession of sorts and I couldn’t wait to return. I thought it would enhance the experience considerably to learn the language, so I purchased two books, one called ‘Easy Thai’ (yeah, right!) the name of the other escapes me. It was something simple like ‘Learning Thai’ and was a deadly earnest tome. It was first printed in the 1940’s when of course they had a rather different way of putting things. The introduction explained about the tones and the vast number of consonants and vowels. It finished with a paragraph explaining that while study of the lessons in this book were useful, (& I’m not making this up) the best way to learn the language is to have as much intercourse with the Thais as possible. I think the word ‘intercourse’ in the 40’s meant talking to, interacting with, but I took no chances anyway & fully embraced their advice. After many years, I have great command of what is known as ‘Taxi Thai’ which means you have enough of a grasp of the language to tell a taxi driver, ‘left here, straight on and where the ****! are you going! to get to your destination. What defeats me are the tones. Take the word ‘Mai’ it has 5 different meanings depending on the tone. For example; ‘Is the wood burning? No, the new silk is burning’ is Mai mai mai? Mai, mai mai mai.’ Simple really. Another good one is ‘Glai’ which means near & ‘Glai’ which means far. Ask your Thai friend to pronounce both & see if you can hear the difference.

44

THEPATTAYAGUIDE | Learning Thai

The subtlety of the tone is what gets me. When I had my business in Bangkok I had a sales girl called Moy. No-one had corrected my tone until I was telling my ex-missus (we are still great friends) about her & she burst out laughing. “What’s her name again?” she said, “Moy” I replied. More laughter. It turns out that I had been calling her ‘pubic hair’ for 3 months, with people being too polite say.

The tone is all important. If you do not pronounce the word exactly to a Thai they don’t know what you are talking about. Unlike westerners they don’t seem to be able to guess what you mean from the context of the other words. As an example, if I was in London & a tourist asked me ‘Where is Piladiccy Circus please?’ My brain (as well as yours did just now) made that quantum leap in a fraction of a second that what they mean is Piccadilly Circus & you direct them accordingly. Thais don’t do this. I do have an alternative theory about this. I think it has something to do with Thai culture & ‘Face’. They hate to be embarrassed & to lose face in a situation, so they would rather pretend that they didn’t understand than make an interpretation & look silly or be laughed at. A quick way to understand the tone is if you remember the movie ‘Close Encounters of the Third Kind’, & the tonal signal that the aliens used to communicate with us, apply it to this word; Mai, mai, mai, mai, mai. I’m not comparing it to an intergalactic language, just that I find it as difficult to learn! Another killer for me was when I was trying to read Thai. It is all clumped together. I am sure there is a good reason for this, other than just to make it as difficult as possible. Perhaps it is an ecological thing, saving that waste of space between words, must save a huge number of trees. ImaginehowdifficultitwouldbeforsomeonelearningEnglishtohavetocutthis intoindividualwords. I think we should ask them nicely to change their ways & do it for us. I hope I haven’t put you off of learning Thai. You may be one of those that picks it up straight away. There are some great schools and private teachers out there. For the rest of us, it is back to our taxi Thai, so until next time, Chok Dee and Sawatdee Krap!

OUTSIDE PATTAYA SPONSORED BY KCR HOMEFINDER | PHONE 038 405 167-8 So, here we are again, since last month’s issue we have been out and about visiting places to eat and have a drink or two. I have mentioned these before but all have increased their menu’s and now offer a much wider range of food available. An old favourite is of course the Peacock Place. Danny the manager is running a tight ship and the menu now contains a nice choice of pizza and pasta dishes. I have just enjoyed a first class home made lasagna served piping hot by the delightful ladies on duty. To be honest it looked a bit on the small side however, it nearly beat me. The wife and kid’s favourite pizza’s are the pepperoni closely followed by the Mexican. James at the Roadhouse serves amongst other things an enormous burgher with a stack of real chips that my mate who is regarded as a trencherman couldn’t finish. I had a three egg omelet served with fresh crusty bread and real butter and this too was more than enough. If you want a bacon sandwich go see Chum at the Terrace bar. My sandwich came stacked out with back bacon served on fresh bread with some salady bits on the side and was more than enough for a late breakfast. Upscale we have of course the Lakeside Restaurant looking over the reservoir. Under the well established Deli Bean brand and having the brands full range of quiche, sandwiches, pies and pastries plus a number of new items. The restaurant itself is first class and as well as a comprehensive western and Thai menu they do imported turkey, beef and lamb roasts. Currently al fresco but by the time you are reading this the enclosed non smoking dining room should be open. 10 out of 10 in every respect. More from the jungle next month.

Property financing is available in Pattaya. Due to the economic downturn resulting in some properties ‘sticking’ we have negotiated with a number of sellers who are willing to offer self financing for buyers who may be wary of bringing one lump investments into the country at this time. This allows sellers to achieve a sale and buyers to make a purchase by reducing the initial level of investment, the system is simple and it works. Firstly it is legal being a private arrangement between the seller and the buyer and scrutinised by one of Pattaya’s most respected lawyers who will oversee the transaction from start to finish and hold all applicable documents during the term of the agreement. You select the property of your choice from our list of self financing sellers and we negotiate the terms of the agreement as follows:

1. The selling price.

2. The initial payment, normally 25% of the selling price.

3. The term of the agreement, normally two to five years.

4. The sum of interest applicable, normally between 3 and 5 %

There are a number of security clauses in the agreement protecting both the seller and the buyer and these can be explained in detail at our offices. Please call Paul for an appointment.

ACCOMMODATION .For those who are not familiar with the Pattaya and Jomtien geography, the South and Central Pattaya located hotels are the ones to chose if you are looking to be in the centre of the “action”. Lots of restaurants, bars, shopping etc. For those looking for perhaps a quieter night’s sleep, choose North Pattaya or Naklua, where there are several quality hotels down by the beach at Wongamat. If you really want to get out the city, then stay at Jomtien. The beach is better than that in Pattaya and it is easy to travel to Pattaya for evenings by taking one of the many “baht buses” which congregate at several points along the Beach Road. The Pattaya Guide Recommends - Sandy Springs Hotel, Soi 13 Room range from 1200 (Basic room) - 2500 (Superior Suite) The hotel is very clean, the staff are excellent and is you will struggle to find better value for money elsewhere in Pattaya. HEALTH AND FITNESS A healthy lifestyle can be achieved anywhere in the world and Pattaya is certainly one of the most popular places people choose. Thailand has a tropical climate and is therefore ideal for the pursuit of outdoor activities: volleyball, soccer, sailing plus many more. However, for and in indoor healthy lifestyle, Pattaya is also among the best and the vast number of 5 star health massage organisations, beauty parlours, plastic surgery clinics, spas and fitness centre mean that Pattaya really is the place to improve your overall health and look. Many people now choose to partake of the various treatments from facials, to waxing and detox to botox in order to gain that healthier looking body and due to the current price of treatments in many western countries, Thailand has found itself an entire new market in patients arriving for plastic surgery treatment and general medical operations which in their own country would cost much more than locally in Thailand. 70

VISA INFORMATION SPONSORED BY FIVE STAR VISA RUNS | PHONE 038 416 088 A visa is fundamentally a document affixed into the passport issued to a foreigner by the Thai government allowing a foreigner to travel to the Kingdom and a granted permission to stay for a certain period of time. Visas can only be obtained outside of the Kingdom from a Royal Thai Embassy consulate. A visa has a validity period which denotes the period within which the visa may be used to apply for entry. The validity period is NOT the length of time you will be permitted to stay in the Kingdom. A’ permission to stay’ stamp is entered into your passport upon arrival into the Kingdom. Whatever visa you hold, you will always receive this stamp. It will include the date of entry and date when you MUST leave the Kingdom or make alternative arrangements. The ‘length of stay’ will be dependent on what type of visa you hold. The majority of Foreigners that enter the Kingdom without a visa will be granted a ‘permission to stay 30 day’ stamp only, which is free of charge. At the discretion of the immigration officer this permission to stay 30 day stamp may be extended for up to 7-15 days (THB 1900) at an immigration office after which time the holder must leave the Kingdom. This stamp is NOT a visa. WARNING: YOU ONLY GET 15 DAYS AT LAND BORDERS DIFFERENT TYPES OF VISAS Single entry tourist visa will permit the holder a 60 day’ permission to stay’ stamp upon entry. If required, this type of visa may be extended by 30 days (THB 1900) at an immigration office, but after that time the holder must leave the country. After one entry, the visa is used. Multiple entry tourist visa will permit the holder a 60 day ‘permission to stay’ stamp upon entry (only visa exempt countries listed overleaf ) or 30 days if not listed below. If required, this type of visa may normally be extended by 30 days at an immigration office, but after that time the holder must leave the 82

country. The holder may then return to the Kingdom and will obtain a second 60 day ‘permission to stay‘ stamp which can also be extended and then the holder must leave. After the stipulated number of entries the visa is ‘used’. Single entry non-immigrant visa will permit the holder a 90 day ‘permission to stay’ stamp. This visa can be extended up to one year for specific reasons and with the required documentation. Multi-entry non-immigrant visa will permit the holder a 90 day ‘permission to stay’ stamp upon entry. Each time the holder enters the Kingdom whilst the visa is valid, he/she will obtain a further 90 day ‘permission to stay stamp’. Such visas can be issued for students/work/family etc., but normally require supporting documentation. This visa can also be extended up to one year for specific reasons and with the required documentation. Although most multi-entry non-immigrant visas are obtained in your home country they may also be obtained from some Royal Thai embassies outside your home country, if you can provide evidence of your marriage to a Thai citizen (marriage certificate) or support of a Thai citizen. 12 month extension to a non-immigrant visa: If you are holding a nonimmigrant visa, you have the option of extending this by 12 months based on either retirement (50 years old or over) or support to a Thai citizen, work, education and the like. This may only be accomplished at an immigration office inside the Kingdom and certain criteria has to be met. If you are residing in the Kingdom under and extension to a non-immigrant visa and wish to leave the Kingdom at any time, then you will need to obtain a re-entry permit to avoid losing the extension and having to re-apply. If you are residing in the Kingdom under an extension to a non-immigrant visa it is a legal requirement that the holder reports current address to an immigration office using form TM.47 (in person or by registered mail) every 90 days. Re-entering the Kingdom is the equivalent of a 90 day report. If you are in possession of a valid tourist visa or a 30 day visa exempt entry stamp and qualify for an extension of stay and plan on doing so you may be

permitted to change to a non-immigrant visa at an immigration office inside Thailand. This change of ‘status’ has certain restrictions depending on your particular circumstances therefore you should check with an officer first. Each individuals circumstances may differ greatly depending on your age, financial position, what port of entry you use, what country you are from, what embassy you are visiting, what you are doing here and of course how long you have been here and, remember the final decision on visa application/issue or entry into the Kingdom will always be at the discretion of the immigration officer. 7. SHOPPING GUIDE Pattaya has numerous large malls, small malls, supermarkets, bazaar-style markets, and thousands of other shops. Expect to find plenty of clothes shops and coffee shops but do not expect to find variety as most shops are selling the same things. Pattaya actually has a long way to go to catch up with Bangkok for variety and volume of shops but it is trying with several new shopping centres opening in recent years, and there is a lot more to come. Bargaining is a way of life here but don’t worry if you don’t know your Thai numbers as most shop keepers will carry a calculator to show the price. MALLS

REAL ESTATE GUIDE More than one hundred new housing or condominium development projects are currently underway in the Pattaya and Jomtien districts. Many of these projects are aimed at the “higher end market. Properties offering large spacious accommodation some with private swimming pools, top end air conditioning units, Jacuzzis etc. These properties are typically around the 8-25 million price range and many represent very good value for money. One of the more up and coming development areas is just south of Jomtien, where several developers are now constructing projects near to the beach at Bang Sare and Baan Amphur. Because of the local laws in Thailand with regard to property ownership by foreigners, condominiums are still as popular as ever with something in the region of 5,000 condominium units currently in construction. Some of the better quality condos are La Royale, Northshore and North Point. However, it is possible to find cheaper units especially in South Pattaya and Jomtien. If you are thinking of a permanent move to Thailand remember to do your homework and seek a reputable real Estate Agent. Real Estate Guide | THEPATTAYAGUIDE
