RW: Let’s start out by having you tell us a little bit about your life before roller derby. What was your life like then? What was your professional/educational background? And were you already engaged in playing other sports? FDD: My life before roller derby consisted of school, work, and tennis. I played college tennis for Saint Leo University and studied Biology -- graduating with a B.S. in Biology. Since graduating, I have been working as an electronic medical records labeler and I have been studying to take the MCAT. For the time being, I have decided to hang up the tennis racket to try other sports…maybe roller derby? RW: And how’d the idea of playing roller derby come about for you? What was the sport’s appeal to you? And dare we ask where that name came from?

FDD: When I was a sophomore in college I remember going with my mom to one of the Bradentucky Bomber’s bouts. I remember thinking how bad-ass all the girls were and I knew it was something I would have to try. I have been playing a non-contact sport my whole life…it was time to change things up. My name Fais DoDo is a Cajun word for “go to sleep.” I’m from New Orleans and I have narcolepsy. I figure if I’m not the one falling asleep, hopefully I’m making the other girls “sleep” when I hit ‘em! RW: Upon entering the derby world, were there any preconceived notions or misconceptions that you had that were shattered? What was the transition like for you? FDD: I don’t think any of my preconceived notions were shattered. I went into derby thinking it would difficult and that it would take some time to be decent on skates. The only misconception I had was that derby girls would be injured all the time. This is not the case. The amazing training team we have teaches you how to fall properly and stand up quickly to avoid injuries.
RW: In the early days, what were some of your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them? FDD: I’m still in my early days. As of now I am the newest Bomber on the team. I think my biggest challenge has been confidence. Luckily, every girl on this team has been incredibly supportive and has helped me to overcome many of the challenges derby has to offer. RW: So, now as you’ve reached your first season, what keeps you motivated and focused for more? Does it take more to get excited about playing now than those early days? FDD: Since I’m still in my first season, everything is still very new to me. There are definitely days where I don’t feel like going to practice after long days of work, but once I get there, I’m so glad I did. Derby is a great social and athletic outlet. There’s nothing like a little derby to take your mind off of the hectic day you just had. RW: Where do you feel that you contribute the most to the team? Why? And what goals have you set for yourself for this year to improve even more? FDD: I’m not sure yet where I contribute to the team. I always try to show up with a positive attitude – always ready to learn something new. My current goal is to stop more effectively and become more agile on my feet. RW: As a skater, what’s been your most memorable moment on the floor? FDD: My most memorable moment was in my first bout. When I lined up for the start of the jam next to my teammates, it all made sense; the feeling could not be described -- this is what we practice so hard for and this is why we play derby. RW: And when you’re not rolling on the track, living in the derby bubble, what is Fais DoDo to be found doing? What keeps you going on those rare occasions when there’s nothing “derby” happening? FDD: My life is pretty much consumed with studying. When I’m not studying, I try and spend time with my family or hit the beach. RW: One thing we love to ask is if you have any advice or encouragement to give to those who are reading this now, thinking about joining up and trying derby on for size. Any words for those folks? FDD: The only thing I can say is that I never thought I was capable of being a derby girl. Give yourself a chance on skates; you might surprise yourself. There is so much support and guidance on the team that it is impossible to fail. RW: And last but not least, anything you’d like to say to the fans? FDD: The fans must know that without them, we would not have nearly as much fun and we would not be nearly as successful. The fans are the reason we work so hard at practice and fight so hard in bouts. You guys make us want to be better!
