Skater Profile:

Hailey Explosive #C4

Let’s start out by having you tell us a little bit about your life before roller derby. What was your life like then? What was your professional/educational background? And were you already engaged in playing other sports? Photo by Joshua DeSario

In middle and high school, I played volleyball, basketball, and softball. I was lucky to win two district championships and be the regional runner up with our softball team. In undergrad, at UF, I played intramural sports to keep my physical activity up since I was so used to playing sports year round. And how’d the idea of playing roller derby come about for you? What was the sport’s appeal to you? And dare we ask where that name came from? My boyfriend is a huge derby fan, and he would always talk about going to bouts in Tampa. I had no clue there was even a derby team in Bradenton until I went to the Tampa Roller Derby draft party for last season. There were a few girls that were announced as transfers from “Bradentucky”, and alas, I found out about my team! I went to see the Bombers play, and I instantly knew this sport was for me! Derby lets you be fierce, athletic, and strategic all at the same time which I love! I’ve always been aggressive in every sport I have played. In high school I gained the nicknames “Animal” and “The Beast” from our sports announcer, Coach Clark (miss him and all my FCA coaches!). My derby name comes from that same line of thinking; every time I step out on the track I want to be the most aggressive, explosive skater I can be. If I’m blocking, I want to be the butt that you fear; if I’m jamming, I want to explode through the pack as fast as I can.

In the early days, what were some of your biggest challenges and how did you overcome them? Turning around! Oh gahd… it was awful. I dreaded warm ups SO MUCH because you HAVE to do it. The only way to overcome my fear was to do it over and over and over. What keeps you motivated and focused for more? Does it take more to get excited about playing now than those early days? I stay motivated by watching other derby teams play. I like to see what they do differently than the Bombers, and try to pick up new strategies. Watching the Tantrums is a huge motivational boost or me. They are so in synch and seeing them bout makes me want to go strap my skates on and practice so that one day I might be on their level!

Upon entering the derby world, were there any preconceived notions or misconceptions that you had that were shattered? What was the transition like for you?

Where do you feel that you contribute the most to the team? Why? And what goals have you set for yourself for this year to improve even more?

I had no preconceived notions because I knew nothing about derby before I joined the team. I hadn’t seen Whip It or been around the sport before. I jumped right in and gave it my all so the transition was pretty smooth!

Right now I feel like I contribute the most as a blocker. I’ve been able to learn a lot in a short period of time, and I am so thankful to everyone who has helped me along the way. My goal for the season is to improve my

jamming. I’ve made it into the jammer rotation a few times, but I really want to step my game up in that aspect and be a dominant scorer for the Bombers. As a skater, what’s been your most memorable moment on the floor? Being told by Dita during our Jacksonville home bout that they were sending out a power line, then having my name called to be part of it! I was so excited!!! If you told me when I started skating that I would be on a power line that soon in my derby career, I would think you were crazy… but it happened!

Also, being one of only two blockers in a jam against NR3 with Foxie was a big moment for me. We worked so well together and held the other teams jammer scoreless! And when you’re not rolling on the track, living in the derby bubble, what is Hailey Explosive to be found doing? What keeps you going on those rare occasions when there’s nothing “derby” happening? Studying! I’m a student at LECOM Bradenton. My life revolves around school and derby. If I’m not at derby, I’m studying, and if I’m not studying, I’m at derby (or having a beer…usually with my fellow derby girls). One thing we love to ask is if you have any advice or encouragement to give to those who are reading this now, thinking about joining up and trying derby on for size. Any words for those folks? DO IT! It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made, and I want everyone to try it! You will never feel so happy to have your butt kicked :-P It may not be the easiest sport to learn, but you can do it! Don’t give up, and just keep skating! And last but not least, anything you’d like to say to the fans?

Our fans rock! We couldn’t do what we do without you! You are the life force of our team. Your cheers keep us going no matter how tired we may get. Your support means the world to us. THANK YOU!!!!
