Welcome to the RSC. Our first season as Co-Artistic Directors is now underway and we are so excited to see people coming through the doors to experience the Company’s work.
Our mission is to bring stories to life – on our stages, in classrooms, in communities and in the virtual sphere. Shakespeare is our touchstone, and from the moment the Memorial Theatre became the Royal Shakespeare Company in 1961, stories by other writers have stood shoulder to shoulder with Shakespeare in our theatres, sometimes in delicate conversation, sometimes in fierce contention. As well as plays by Shakespeare, this season offers brand new plays, a Restoration comedy, a retelling of a classic fairy tale and a story from one of Shakespeare’s contemporaries.
If you can, do spend an hour or so in the beautiful surroundings of the Swan Gardens enjoying our compact and joyful new version of As You Like It in The Holloway Garden Theatre. This much-loved outdoor theatre will also be home to the latest production from RSC Next Generation –The Two Gentlemen of Verona – as well as offerings from other companies who’ve travelled from near and far to share their stories.
On your visit, you’ll find a cafe on the river, a restaurant on the roof, Susie’s Bar in The Other Place, our free exhibition The Play’s The Thing showcasing objects from our almost 150 years of theatre making, as well as hundreds of events in unexpected places. As we celebrate other art forms and reach across borders, you’ll also be able to enjoy visiting productions from Northern Ballet and from the Uzhhorod Theatre of Ukraine.
Whether you’ve got an hour or a week, whether you’ve been part of the RSC for 50 years or whether you’re visiting us for the first time, we hope you’ll come and join us – we can’t wait to see you!

BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
‘Revenged I will be, as sure as his guts are made of puddings.’
Curtains are twitching and tongues are wagging in this fresh new production of Shakespeare’s suburban comedy.
When an out-of-pocket schemer arrives among the lawns and herbaceous borders of Windsor, he sets about seducing two well-to-do married women. It’s the perfect hustle. Surely one of them will fall for his irresistible charms? But in this neighbourhood, wives talk. And they’re about to play some tricks of their own...
Lies! Jealousy! Dirty laundry! The Merry Wives of Windsor is an uproarious tale of mischief and double-dealing where the women get the last laugh. What goes on at Number 22 is absolutely everybody’s business.
Blanche McIntyre (The Two Noble Kinsmen, All’s Well That Ends Well RSC, Arabian Nights Bristol Old Vic) returns to direct a company including John Hodgkinson and double Olivier Award-winner Samantha Spiro.

‘It’s not a negotiation, it’s hand to hand combat.’
11 December 1997.
The Kyoto Conference Centre. 5am.
The nations of the world are in deadlock. 11 hours have passed since the UN’s landmark climate conference should have ended. Time is running out. And agreement feels a world away…
Their prize: the world’s first legally binding emissions targets. Their obstacle: American oil lobbyist and master strategist, Don Pearlman.
Award-winning directors Stephen Daldry and Justin Martin (Stranger Things: The First Shadow) reunite with writers Joe Murphy and Joe Robertson following their acclaimed collaboration on The Jungle. With a cast including Stephen Kunken (Billions and The Handmaid’s Tale), this new production is a timely and fast-paced political thriller placing you right at the heart of the historic 1997 Kyoto climate summit.
Global in scale and personal at heart, Kyoto is the breathless, gripping tale of a moment when, finally, the impossible seemed possible. Be part of that moment with our limited ‘In conference’ seats which give audience members the chance to be one of the delegates in the play. Call the Box Office for more details.
During the run of Kyoto we will host our very own climate conference – with a range of wraparound activities –see the website for more details.

‘There’s no possibility of being witty without a little ill nature.’
1770s London, where the aristocracy’s morals have plunged lower than the necklines on the women’s gowns. The vicious Lady Sneerwell enjoys ruining reputations for pleasure, and her latest target is the young bachelor Charles Surface — why should this pretentious little rake inherit his uncle’s fortune? Together with Charles’ conniving brother Joseph, Sneerwell orchestrates an elaborate scheme of intrigue and infidelity that’s sure to ruffle all the right feathers — hopefully.
After Shakespeare but long before Bridgerton, there was The School for Scandal, Sheridan’s brilliantly biting comedy of manners in five acts. This new production — styled to the nines with period flair — promises an exuberant feast of big wigs and even bigger laughs.
Tinuke Craig, Artistic Associate at the Lyric Theatre Hammersmith, directs. Recent work includes Jitney (The Old Vic for Headlong), The Color Purple (Leicester Curve) and Crave (Chichester).

PERICLES
BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
‘O you gods! Why do you make us love your goodly gifts, And snatch them straight away?’
When Prince Pericles solves a riddle set by the King, he knows the answer could get him killed. Fleeing for safety, he finds himself swept away on an epic voyage that will see him battle princes, marry his true love and become a father. But this is also a journey of storms and shipwrecks, abduction and devastating loss. Adrift in an ocean of grief, will Pericles ever see his family again?
Shakespeare’s stirring tale of love, hope and miracles marks the RSC debut of Tamara Harvey, our Co-Artistic Director.
Known for his television work including How to Get Away With Murder as well as his acclaimed stage work including Red (Wyndham’s), Romeo in Romeo and Juliet (Shakespeare’s Globe) and Orlando in As You Like It (Soho Place), award-winning actor Alfred Enoch plays the title role.

‘No sooner met but they looked; no sooner looked but they loved.’
You might not expect to meet your true love at a wrestling match, yet that’s exactly where Cupid takes aim at Rosalind and Orlando. But family feuds send them running in different directions.
A forest, several disguises and a lot of love poetry later, will they find their way back to each other? Love at first sight isn’t quite as straightforward as you might think...
Feel the wind through the trees of the Forest of Arden as you enjoy As You Like It in our outdoor venue, The Holloway Garden Theatre. At just 1 hour 20 minutes long, this edited version is a great first introduction to Shakespeare, or just a lovely way to see his timeless comedy in the glorious surroundings of the Swan Theatre Gardens.
The Holloway Garden Theatre will also host a community-programmed series of workshops and events as well as a production of The Two Gentlemen of Verona performed by the RSC's Next Generation Young Company –see show page for more details.

‘So here’s the offer. To run a highly ethical campaign for a candidate you really can believe in, actually. In a place that needs you. Now.’
It’s the 2000s. We’re in a faraway country. Rachel, a stellar American political strategist, and Caro, her British data whizz, have been hired to fight a ferocious election, in a place where it’s hard to tell what’s real and what’s fake.
They think they’re here to teach the Eastern Europeans how to do democracy, but it turns out they’re here to learn. And when Rachel’s former political partner Larry rocks up on the rival side, their showdown threatens to change global politics, from Warsaw to Wisconsin. Forever.
At a time of epoch-changing elections on both sides of the Atlantic, Holly Race Roughan (Artistic Director of Headlong) directs The New Real, David Edgar’s epic, panoramic play about how the political fault-line was redrawn. An origin story, for right now.
Get a seat right at the heart of the drama as The New Real is performed in traverse in the newly re-configured auditorium of The Other Place.

‘Men should be what they seem.’
Jealousy kills.
Othello is at the peak of his powers: not only Venice’s greatest general, but now husband to the noble and beautiful Desdemona. But he does not know that in passing over his servant Iago for promotion, he has created a deadly – and brilliant – enemy.
John Douglas Thompson (Till, Theatre for A New Audience’s The Merchant of Venice) takes the title role opposite Will Keen (Operation Mincemeat, Wolf Hall) as Iago and Juliet Rylance (McMafia, Perry Mason) as Desdemona, in this new production from director Tim Carroll (Artistic Director of Canada’s Shaw Festival and director of the award-winning Twelfth Night and Richard III featuring Mark Rylance at Shakespeare’s Globe, in the West End and on Broadway).

'What’s wrong with wanting to dance?'
Give a girl the right shoes and she can conquer the world, or so they say.
When an orphaned young woman is taken in by some local do-gooders, she is expected to be seen and not heard. Dazzled by a pair of beautiful shoes, she sees the chance to do and be so much more, but soon her feet betray her, taking her to places she does not wish to go.
This Christmas, get up close to the magic as playwright Nancy Harris brings Hans Christian Andersen’s dark fairy tale into the 21st century in the intimate surroundings of the Swan Theatre.
Directed by Kimberley Rampersad (Associate Artistic Director of the Shaw Festival, Canada) in her RSC debut, The Red Shoes is both a magical story and cautionary tale of pride, vanity and how we all deserve to dance how we wish to dance.

‘I was adored once too.’
A woman survives a shipwreck and washes up on an unknown shore.
Alone and bereaved of her twin brother, she embarks on a secret new life as a go-between for two people in the extremity of love and grief. Caught up in the ensuing love triangle she experiences the chaos and humanity of unexpected love; and she discovers that in Illyria, everyone is hiding something.
Prasanna Puwanarajah returns to the RSC to direct Shakespeare’s bittersweet winter masterpiece: a freewheeling miracle of farce, longing, love and life.

‘Drown
the stage with
tears.’
Grief can play tricks on the mind, even conjure ghosts. But when Hamlet’s dead father appears to him one night, he signals murder, not madness.
Hamlet’s mother has married his uncle, and at a less than decent interval too. As he pulls at the threads of his not-so-happy new family, Hamlet unravels a web of deceit and immorality that leads to the ultimate crisis of conscience.
Following their hugely successful recent collaborations on Cold War and Patriots, multi award-winner Rupert Goold (Dear England, National Theatre; Romeo and Juliet, The Merchant of Venice RSC), directs Luke Thallon as Hamlet in this new production of Shakespeare’s family saga.

BY CHRISTOPHER MARLOWE
‘I see your love to Gaveston will be the ruin of the realm and you.’
The King is dead, long live the King. And his boyfriend.
When Edward II insists on ruling with the man he loves by his side, the Palace refuses. The establishment conspires to restore the natural order, plunging the country into a civil war and threatening the very existence of the monarchy.
Better a dead king than a gay king.

THE TWO GENTLEMEN OF VERONA
BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE
‘How
wayward is this foolish love...’
One friend wants to see the world, whilst the other stays home: for a girl. Soon the two friends are brought together again in the court of Milan, where one will quickly forget his love back home and betray the other – all in the name of love, or jealousy. The Duke of Milan’s daughter, the focus of the friends' love, will not have her mind changed by the plots and plans and when the girl from back home shows up disguised, these two young “gentlemen” have to face the music.
A fresh air approach to Shakespeare’s early romantic comedy – where first loves, betrayal and a dog all collide in music and mayhem.
This production is created and performed by the RSC Next Generation Act Young Company, made up of 24 young people aged 13-18 from across England. They are supported by behind-the-scenes creatives drawn from our Next Generation Direct and Backstage programmes.
Next Generation is our talent development programme for young theatre makers across England recruited through the RSC Associate Schools Programme. We work in long term partnership with Next Generation company members to support them to develop skills for life and work

A powerful transformation of society is taking place –we are changing, the world is changing. The Shakespearean spirit has given us the strength to continue, we do not give up.
When Russia invaded Ukraine, thousands of people found refuge in the small town of Uzhhorod in western Ukraine. Local Director Vyacheslav Yehorov saw the parallels between the refugees’ experience and the themes of King Lear, and involved them in the creation of his play.
The result is a compelling new production threaded through with a haunting sense of loss.
King Lear is performed in Ukrainian without surtitles.
Two performances only. Sold out – check with Box Office for returns.
