BUSINESSES IN EDUCATION Employers want young people to be work-ready when they leave school and enter the job market. This means that businesses expect young people to come equipped with core skills like numeracy and literacy – but increasingly there is much more emphasis on ‘real world’ skills like communications, a can-do attitude, team work and positive work ethic. Meeting these challenges, demands a new approach to education - one which sees schools and businesses working together to help students become more employable. This is something which Peterborough’s Skill Service, run by Opportunity Peterborough and Peterborough City Council, is keen to support. The Service offers a pioneering brokerage programme that facilitates the delivery of work-related activities, such as mentoring, careers talks, classroom sessions and work experience placements. A website www.peterboroughskillsservice.com was set up in May this year to act as a central information portal. Schools and colleges can read about events and see some of the activities they could take advantage of in the future. Young people and their parents can find links to information to help them with career and education choices. And local employers are encouraged to visit the site to learn how Peterborough Skills Service can provide assistance and be signposted to
the most recent funding and developments for education and skills in the city. One local success story is the innovative partnership formed earlier this year between one of the city’s most successful and dynamic local employers, BGL Group, and Ormiston Bushfield Academy located near Orton Centre in Peterborough. An important aim of the partnership was to provide invaluable opportunities for training, mentoring and apprenticeships to current and future students at the Academy. Five months in and the partnership is already meeting that aim. Staff from BGL Group are sitting on the Academy’s board of governors, and offering invaluable input into lessons like economics and enterprise. www.bglgroup.co.uk
LANDLORDS IN THE PETERBOROUGH AREA TARGETED IN CLAMP DOWN BY HMRC Landlords in East Anglia are on HMRC’s hit list in a crack down on tax evasion. The warning comes after the tax office’s success in similar campaigns which has helped collect an additional £50 million of unpaid taxes and looks set to launch a number of criminal investigations. Peterborough accountants Rawlinsons are now alerting those operating buy-to-let properties in the area to ensure they are fully compliant to avoid falling foul of the ongoing campaign. www.rawlinsons.co.uk

HEALTH, HAIR & BEAUTY Hi Beauties The summer holidays are finally upon us and hopefully we will eventually see the sun out more than the odd hour here and there… This months issue is all about teenagers so I’ve put together my top tips to start them off with a basic guide to some ‘PG’ beauty. It’s always nice to take care of your appearance but it’s good to make sure your teenagers remember less is more and to enhance rather than mask (e.g. - don’t wear too much make-up)!
1.
Top tips for the perfect teenager’s beauty bag… 1. Spot the difference It’s always handy to have a blemish stick for when you get a break out, just apply a couple times during the day and before you go to bed, which will make the spot dry up and go much quicker. Try the Tea Tree Blemish Stick from The Body Shop £5.
2.
2. Simple Skincare Start off with a simple 3 step routine; cleanse, tone and moisturise, choose products that are kind to the skin, the ‘Simply Sensitive’ range by Boots is perfect for teenage skin. Prices start from £2.49.
3. Lip-tastic My favourite product as a teenager had to be lip balm; I had 100’s of them. Keep those lips in top condition with Vaseline’s Lip Therapy which comes in different versions including; original, cocoa butter or try the tinted version ‘rosy lips’ to add a bit of colour. RRP £1.99.

4. Nail Polish Nails are a great way to express yourself and easy to change or remove. I adore the new press-on nail ranges by imPress from £7.99, they come in loads of colours, I especially love the floral and animal print designs! Perfect if you’re in a hurry and they last for up to a week…
5.
5. Hair Sometimes washing your hair can be such a chore, banish grease and keep your hair fresh in-between washes with Dry Hair Shampoo from Batiste, just spray, brush and go… RRP £3.99

Women’s Rugby is the NEW beauty and fitness regime!
Peterborough Lions
With participation currently at an all-time high there are more reasons than the rough and tumble why women’s rugby is becoming more popular. Formally known as a man’s sport the women and girls at Peterborough Rugby Club are proving they can hold their own on and off the pitch. Now it’s your turn to get involved. This year the team are very proud to launch a new campaign to prove anyone can play rugby and the stereotype of a Man’s sport has well and truly been put to bed. For many years rugby has prided its self on being a sport for all the family, with many social aspects, which has attracted a variety of women and girls to the sport. Sunday mud facials are all part of the fun! Summer training is on a Tuesday and Thursday at Fortress Fengate, Peterborough. Anyone is welcome to join in, you don’t even have to have held a ball before to play. The team has a range of players with different abilities and backgrounds. The club are keen to promote ‘There are 2 sides to every girl’ so if you think you won’t fit into the team, challenge them! Peterborough Ladies prides itself on being a unique mix up of personalities with a variety of job roles and talents, including scientists, landscapers, paramedics, mums, engineers, carers and police women. So if you’re up for the challenge, or would like to sponsor the Peterborough Ladies team, contact Roxy 077817488320 or email roxy170291@hotmail.com www.pitchero.com/clubs/peterborough
It’s Goodbye from her and Hello from him. Immediate Past President Gaby Sharman handed her chain of office to President Bill Peacock at the handing over ceremony at Elton Village Hall on 29 June. In her very busy year, Lion Gaby led a full programme of events and charity fundraising in support of Peterborough Soup Kitchen and Shopmobility. Her practical help has been given people who have been affected in life by one-toomany hard knocks. Two new shopping scooters, both labeled “Pride” were presented in May to Shopmobility on 11th floor of Queensgate. President Bill has been installed for the third time, and is very proud to represent Peterborough Lions Club. His main projects for the coming year are Breast Cancer Research and Music for the Deaf. Breast cancer can affect both women and men, and in that sense we are all pink. Music for the Deaf has worked for well over 20 years to bring the joy of music to seven million deaf and partially deaf people in Britain. The handover ceremony included a lively evening of Barn Dance led by the band Ock-n-Dough and a generous supper of Fish-n-Chips.
ORTON WATERVILLE VILLAGE HALL The Trustees of Orton Waterville Village Hall are pleased to announce that detailed planning has begun for work on the Jubilee Project. Funding is now in place for Phase 1 which includes a replacement roof, new heating and better insulation. This has been made possible through local fundraising and grants awarded by national organisations. The most recent award of £50,000 from WREN broke the £100,000 barrier needed to trigger Phase 1. www.wren.org.uk

Indesit’s Adam conquers the seas in life-threatening swim AN INTREPID Indesit employee battled excruciating pain to become the first British swimmer to complete one of the world’s toughest swims. National Account Manager Adam Walker stretched his body to its physical limit by conquering Hawaii’s Molokai Straits – despite being stung across the stomach by a Portuguese Man O’War, one of the sea’s most poisonous jellyfish. The 33-year-old’s lethal brush with death came towards the end of his mammoth 36-mile swim which took him 17 hours and five minutes to complete. Vicious ocean currents meant he had to take an alternative route, adding 10 miles to the planned course.
the world. The remaining swims are the Catalina Channel (Santa Catalina to California), the Cook Strait (New Zealand), the Tsugara Channel (islands of Honshu and Hokkaido in Japan) and the North Channel (Ireland to Scotland).
Adam, who works at Indesit’s head office on Morley Way, Peterborough and lives in Nottingham, also braved numerous other jellyfish stings to his face and a six-foot tiger shark swimming underneath him.
White Goods Manufacturer Indesit have sponsored Adam who is raising money for the charity Sportsaid.
This swim takes Adam one step closer to completing the Ocean 7 Challenge, to become the first British swimmer to conquer the seven hardest swims in

ORMISTON BUSHFIELD ACADEMY Ormiston Bushfield Academy’s (OBA) brand new building is currently under construction at Orton Centre, Peterborough. The £20.6 million project is set to be completed in July this year and includes a 524 sqm library, a purpose built dance and drama studio, a television studio, and an all-weather football pitch – all of which will be available for the wider community as well as pupils. Academy Student Sam Ladds (17) is keeping track of progress as construction continues... On Monday, July 9 at 10am I was proud to witness the official handover of our new building from Kier Construction to principal Eric Winstone. Watching Mr Winstone open the doors to the new building was a momentous occasion. A select group of current and ex students were invited to the handover, including some of the first students to enter the old building when it was opened in 1978.

After the official ceremony, we were given the opportunity to have a tour around the new building, leaving many of us completely awe-struck and excited. The tour gave students a tantalizing taste of the future. It was ten times more impressive than any of us could have imagined and the possibilities it will open up are endless. Staff will begin the process of moving into the new building during the summer holidays ready for us to walk into in September. I can’t wait!

TORCH RELAY The Paralympic Torch relay takes place from 24 – 29 August. Building on the traditional Torch Relay format, the relay begins in London on Friday 24 August with the lighting of England’s flame. The United Kingdom’s other three capital cities – Greater Belfast, Cardiff and Edinburgh – will then light a flame on each of the following days, at special Flame Lighting events. Once a flame has been lit, it will visit local community groups and key locations in and around the city.
By the time of the Sydney 2000 Games, 18 sports were part of the programme, with Paralympic Sailing and Wheelchair Rugby making their debut. The Barcelona 1992 Games featured 3,021 athletes from 82 nations. The London 2012 Paralympic Games will feature 20 different sports with as many as 4,200 athletes from 150 nations taking part.

HOME & GARDEN
Garden Scene By Joseph Whitehead www.gardenwiseadvice.com
A few plants to perhaps avoid in a child friendly garden – • Anything very spiky like Pyracantha and Berberis. • Plants that can cause irritation, like Euphorbia who’s sap can irritate the skin or Fremontidendron and its furry leaves that can cause breathing problems. • Anything poisonous like monks hood (Aconitum) or fox gloves (Digitalis) which are very dangerous
if ingested.
You could say that gardening is in my blood, my grandfather as his father before him, a head gardener, my dad a keen and very capable gardener, I think the path I chose was probably inevitable! Gardening doesn’t just offer us great pleasure but also our children; just the simple act of sowing a seed waiting for the first shoot to appear and watching it grow is enough to inspire a future generation of young gardeners.
To capture the imagination of your young gardeners maybe we should look at plants that excite the senses – • • • •
Calendular a lovely annual, bright flowers and as they fade seeds of three very different shapes. Stachys byzantine or ‘lambs ear’s with soft furry foliage that you can’t resist stroking. Picking fresh Strawberries or eating raw peas from the pod no child could resist! Growing potatoes in the ground or if space is limited in large pots on your patio, when it’s time to harvest them it’s like searching for buried treasure!
To help inspire your budding gardeners how about – • • •
Sow some giant sunflowers and see who can grow the tallest. Making a wildlife container pond with a large waterproof glazed pot, filled with water and add small aquatic plants. How about using hazel sticks to make a teepee, and then growing runner beans all over it and hay presto a living and partly edible den.
A nice way to introduce your children to fruit and vegetable growing is to build a simple raised bed, the wood can be painted and decorated. Put in a strawberry plant, sow successional crops like lettuce, spring onions and beetroot, and longer term crops like carrots, peas and French beans that can just be dug up or picked and eaten raw. Don’t forget to sow a row or two of annual flowers like Nigella to attract lots of bees and other insects for pollination. Telephone: 01780 783613 | August 2012

Give yourself the edge… Yes, it is still August, but September is approaching quickly, which unfortunately means that school is too. If you’re at the point where you actually want to be proactive and do something really beneficial with your time then you might want to start preparing for the new school year. I don’t mean just nipping off to the shops to buy a shiny new pencil case and shoes (which, lets be honest, we all secretly love to do, or is that just me?),
Step Up 4: Miami Heat Okay, so I’m bound to be sceptical when there’s a sequel of a sequel of a sequel due to be released (the originals are undoubtedly always the best), but this dance film, out 10 August, might just prove my pessimism wrong. Set in Miami, hence the title, the film follows a professional dancer who falls in love with a man who leads his dance crew in flash mobs.
DRIVING So my birthday has been and gone and I am now officially allowed on the roads. I have had a few near misses in my car Jeremy (looking lovely with his brand new air freshener and dice), but apart from stalling (a lot), overall everything is running smoothly – at least I haven’t crashed yet! I’m now on driving lesson number three and have been driving through town, on country roads and practising roundabouts - next time I’m braving the A1, so wish me luck! 31
but setting yourself up for the coming year academically. If you love history, then visiting Peterborough Cathedral, Burghley House, Peterborough Museum, Longthorpe Tower might be interesting, making sure that you don’t lose touch with the subject by the time you go back and boosting your local historical knowledge at the same time. If art is more your thing then visiting the Norman Cross Gallery near Peterborough or simply Stamford Arts Centre would probably be of great interest to you, or if you love sport then why not try something new? BEWARE – GRASS SEEDS!! Take care where you walk your dog. These dart shaped seeds enter the skin between toes, ears or eyes etc. The seed pierces the skin and due to the dart shape they are unable to leave the entry point, this means the seed will migrate through the dog. It is not unknown for a seed to enter between the toes and travel up to the shoulder which requires a surgical procedure under sedation to remove it. Avoid grass seed areas if possible and check your dog over after their walk paying special attention to the feet and ears.

August is finally here and that means the start of the domestic football season. As is the case every year the start of the season is a time for fans, players and managers alike to have fresh optimism for the 9 months ahead, look forward to new marquee signings making their bow and discuss how this might, just might be their year. This month I’ve decided to give insight into 3 players who are new to these shores but I believe have the ability to set the Premier League alight.
Eden HazardChelsea Signed from French side Lille for a reported £32 million, huge expectation will lay on the Belgian midfielder despite being just 21 years old. I believe though once he has settled into what is a much more intense, fast paced league compared to that of ligue 1 we will him flourish into a truly fantastic player. Many would have only seen small glimpses of him, (England’s friendly with Belgium prior to Euro 2012) Hazard is blessed with fantastic balance and skill and has the ability to drift by players on either side which will no doubt create plenty of opportunities for his new team mates. As demonstrated in France he

has an eye for goal too, scoring way into double figures last year. He may have to slightly bide his time initially at Stamford Bridge but I fully expect him to be a fans favourite.
Lukas PodolskiArsenal Many gunners fans have been screaming from the rooftops for this type of signing for a while now and I think Podolski will certainly be a hit in the red side of North London. At just 27 he has already amassed over 100 caps for Germany and scored way over 200 goals for the two sides he has represented, FC Koln twice and Bayern Munich. Like Hazard his pace and trickery will suit the Premier League but add to this his power

and explosive shooting when driving inside usually from the left. Many saw the arrival of Podolski as the perfect foil for star man Robin Van Persie but with Dutchman appearing to be looking for an exit out of the Emirates it may be left for him to quickly form a partnership with another fresh face, Frenchman Olivier Giroud.
Shinji KagawaMan United Of the three players, Kagawa is probably the least known and talked about but without doubt has the ability to perform at the highest level and add that extra creative midfield spark many believed United lacked last year. Signed by German side Borussia Dortmund from Japanese club Cerezo Osaka in 2010, the Japanese Midfielder was a massive hit, helping Dortmund to the Bundesliga title two years in a row and scoring in the double figures both years. Like Hazard he may take time to settle into life in England but I’m pretty sure it won’t be long before we see the best the 23 year old has to offer.
