“What are you thankful for?” This is the question that educator and community organizer Lori Harris always starts her speeches with, like at Shippensburg University on April 12.

Harris went around the room in the Dauphin Humanities Center asking the students of SU what they are thankful for. Their answers ranged from family and friends to as simple as being alive. Harris said she is thankful for her aunt and her past students — they helped her get to where she is today.

Harris runs an educational program called Pillars of Peace, which helps students connect with one another and stay out of trouble.

Harris had a hard time finding a job, at least until she went to Imhotep Institute Charter High School in Philadelphia. She was in charge of the mediator program when she helped create the Pillars of Peace program. Harris described Pillars of Peace as a mentoring and Afrocentric program.

ting black people in the center of it,” Harris said. She wants to give students this kind of perspective — something that was not taught to students her age when she was in school. In Pillars of Peace, instead of giving students detentions because of their actions, they called it “re-centering.”

During re-centering, Harris had students write down why they were doing their bad actions. After reading these responses, Harris realized that some students were going through things that other students have also been through. She wanted them to realize that they are not alone, she said.

human. She said she knows her program works because people who used to get suspended from school do not anymore, ever since they have been in Pillars of Peace. Harris said in order to create peace with anyone else, we need to create peace within ourselves.

“Once we realize we are connected, we can all work together,” Harris said. Harris plans to put the Pillars of Peace program in more schools in Philadelphia and in more universities because peace is needed.

Harris was a minority all through school. She felt as though people never saw things through her perspective. Once she graduated high school, she did something that she would never believe that she would be doing — she went to college. Harris graduated from Juniata College where she focused on interpersonal/ intercultural communication and peace studies. She wanted to get involved in education and work with peace and diversity.

SU receives $49,000 grant, furthers conservation efforts Jenna Wise

There are two urgent care facilities near the Shippensburg area that offer treatment for common, non-life-threatening conditions to patients on a daily basis.

Located in Shippensburg and Chambersburg, the urgent care medical facilities are something that is available to the public.

Urgent care can provide many services and treatments to anyone who walks through the doors.

Whether it be an illness, injury, lab and imaging testing or a simple physical, urgent care will cater toward your needs, according to Allison Schuchart, Summit Health’s strategic communications coordinator.

The benefits of going to an urgent care facility can influence a patient’s decision to choose the facility rather than seeing a primary physician. Walk-ins are welcome and the center is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.

With many people getting off work around 5 p.m., this may be the only option someone has to get treatment without having to take off work.

Should these kinds of facilities take the place of primary physicians? The simple answer is “no,” according to the facility’s staff.

“Urgent care should never take the place of your primary care physician and is not intended for the management of chronic disease,” said Dr. Brooke Sheffler, the associate medical director for walk-in and urgent care.

Following the development of a new sustainability program and a grant donated by the National Science Foundation, Shippensburg University put forth additional environmental conservation efforts during the 2015-16 school year.

Titled “Teaching for a Sustainable Future,” these initiatives will expose university professors to how students can be educated about living in today’s society, while remaining conscious of current environmental issues.

SU’s grant was one of about 15 implementation grants given to colleges and universities nationwide.

The $49,000 donation will be made toward integrating education on sustainability into a variety of university courses involving humanities, social and traditional sciences and mathematics.

“What’s interesting is that sustainability can be incorporated into so many classes,” said Steven Haase, chair of the Environmen-

tal Steering Committee (ESC).

“Humans are the driver of climate change. It’s important to be asking how we can change our behavior.”

One of the largest obstacles people face is how to make the issue of living sustainably possible for everyone, Hasse said. Shippensburg Produce and Outreach, a non-profit organization that distributes produce to more than 500 families in the Shippensburg area each week, helps provide local community members with resources they may not have had access to otherwise.

Additionally, much of the produce grown on SU’s student and faculty-run campus farm is donated to the university’s dining services or to Shippensburg Produce and Outreach, before going back into the Shippensburg community.

Haase said that although less wealthy communities may not be able to obtain more environmentally friendly resources, SU students are fortunate to have these materials at their disposal.

“We have the resources to be moving forward on the right track, while not everyone has that capa-

bility,” Haase said. “When families are struggling to put dinner on the table, [sustainability] may not be an issue on the top of their list.”

Haase said that although it is never too late to make the transition to a greener lifestyle, he recommends that the process begins sooner rather than later, particularly at the primary school level.

Educating the public that actions as small as recycling proper materials and turning lights off when leaving a room, can make a huge difference, according to Haase.

“We have to make sure that the [importance of sustainability] message keeps getting out, and the sooner we start educating the easier it is to change the behavior,” Haase said.

Beginning on April 18, SU began hosting sustainability programs such as a campus community forum, a sustainability field conference as well as student service-learning opportunities at the SU campus farm, the Food Recovery Network and others available through several local and regional partnerships.

Summit Health, based in south-central Pennsylvania, is a non-profit healthcare system, according to its website. Its mission is to provide high quality and affordable healthcare to anyone who needs it.

The facility offers a number of treatments and services on site.

Something like a cold, the flu, a rash, sprains or a pregnancy test can be taken care of in an urgent care facility. Physicals or a flu shot can be taken care of at the facilities as well.

“We know that patients are busy and need an easily accessible option,” Sheffler said.

But, urgent care warns that if you are experiencing chest pain, severe pains, dizziness or lose consciousness, be sure to call 911 or contact the nearest emergency department.

The members said they hold events throughout the year, such as conferences and socials, to share their culture. The march is a way to make their presence known, but also to remind people of the discrimination that goes on. Not everyone

Examples of holds could be for missing paperwork, parking fines or a balance still needing to be paid on your bill (among other things).

If you have a financial hold on your account, this was placed by the student accounts office, not the financial aid office. However, if you have questions about your hold you may contact the student accounts office and may be directed to our office for po-

tential funding. Having a hold on your account will prohibit you from scheduling classes.

On Thursday, the Army ROTC celebrates its 100th anniversary. Shippensburg University’s Raider Battalion will be hosting multiple activities from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. All of the events are free and are held in the CUB and the practice football field.

Congress undergoes debate on statute of limitations Missy Langdon Opinion Editor

Last week here at Shippensburg University, we had the “Take Back the Night” event, at which victims of sexual assault spoke out about their awful experiences. I am sure anyone who attended that event had a heart full of grief for anyone who had to go through that in his or her life, as well as a mind full of ideas on how to stop it.

There is an entire legal matter in regard to sexual assault that also needs to be addressed, and that is the statute of limitations. The statue of limitation states how long you have to file a crime. For rape it is 12 years and for assault it is two years, according to lawyer.com. After these time limits, the victim is unable to come forward and receive justice. Is this really fair?

relive the event, whatever it may be. I just do not think it is fair to put a time limit on someone’s grieving and healing time.

On a positive note, the U.S. House of Representatives voted on April 13

to abolish the statute of limitations in regard to child sex-abuse crimes and it got an astonishing 180-15 vote, moving the vote to the Senate next, according to Philly.com.

It would be a huge step forward

in our society if we were able to get an extension, or even completely get rid of these time limitations on how long a victim has to come forward about a horrific crime. Some people would argue that after such a long amount of time it is unfair to the person being accused, but is it really? If he or she is found guilty, even if it is 30 years later, it means that they are guilty. Time does not make someone “un-guilty” of a crime; time only gives them more time to hope that they will not get caught.

By removing the statute of limitations, we will be able to give victims of assault and rape the time they need to heal while still being able to come forward and give justice where it is due. I truly hope that abolishing the statute of limitations with regard to child sex-abuse crimes will get through the Senate. It will be a huge step in the right direction and hopefully give victims a more comfortable feeling about coming forward, rather than feeling like they need to be rushed.

“Do not date that guy you will meet this day.” “Don’t buy that dress.” “Study harder.” These are just a few responses I received when I asked 30 random people what advice would they give themselves if they could go back in time.

More often than not, people tend to look back on the things they regret the most in their lives. Since no two experiences are the same, I began to wonder what advice people would give themselves if they had the chance.

The answers I received were extraordinary. Some people told me they would go back and only change frivolous details, like small financial purchases or switching out a beauty product that would cause a horrible acne break-out in 11th grade.

Some people wanted to change very significant details that could alter their lives drastically — whether it was dating advice, choosing a different college or major, cutting ties with toxic friendships or financial advice.

The response that stuck out the most to me was, “If I had a chance to go back and give myself some real serious advice, I would teach myself how to recognize abuse early on,” one woman said.

“If I knew relationships weren’t supposed to be this way I would have gotten out sooner and saved myself a lot of heartache,” the woman said.

After gathering my responses on campus, I decided to broaden my horizons. So I went to Twitter, because it’s Twitter and where else should one go to get answers to deep, profound questions, right?

Twitter user @sonyaacole responded to my question with, “Stand

up for yourself and don’t care what anyone else thinks or says about you because you know who you are.”

Another Twitter user, @imAnthonyB, said he would advise himself never to be afraid to speak his mind.

Although everyone differed in what advice they would give themselves, there was one thing all of my interviewees had in common — each person’s mistakes helped them learn and grow as a person.

I began to reflect on everything that had happened in my life and wondered if there was anything I would advise myself to do differently.

I decided that I would not change a thing. I think I learned everything I should have at the right time. Every mistake taught me what not to do again. I now know how to properly manage my money. I have learned how to spot the signs of toxic relationships and how to remove myself from them. Most of all, I am

Is raising the minimum wage really a good idea?

President Barack Obama was quoted as saying, “Nobody who works full time should have to raise their children in poverty,” according to usnews.com. Now, I agree with this statement and I feel like the government should help people who work that long and do live in poverty.

But the solution to this is not raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. Some cities have already passed laws that will increase the minimum wage to $15 gradually, such as Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York. Unlike Seattle, where officals made the jump to $15 an hour overnight, they passed the law hoping that it would cause the number of people on welfare to drop drastically.

Despite the booming economy throughout western Washington, the welfare caseload has only

dropped slightly, from 130,851 to 130,376 since the minimum wage increase, according to foxnews.com.

This is due to the fact that many workers are actually asking for fewer working hours so they can keep public subsidies such as food, childcare and rent.

So these people needed the public subsidies to get by and still need them to live. But in order to keep the public subsidies, they need to make below a certain amount of money.

The increase in the minimum wage will take that away and they still will not be able to live off of it. All it is doing is hurting these people.

These people are not the only ones getting hurt by the increase. The increase will have a drastic negative effect on the job market for young and less-educated workers, who are already having problems trying to find jobs that will give them valuable work experience, according to fortune.com. So what is happening in the cities and areas where they have already made the increase to $15 an hour? Well, in Washington, D.C., Wal-Mart was planning on opening six new stores, which would create around 1,800 jobs. Once the announcement was made that the D.C. city council passed the law, Wal-Mart canceled the plans for the six new stores, according to usnews. com.

Now some restaurants are even adding on a 15 percent surcharge to cover the minimum wage hike and some managers are no longer encouraging tipping the waitstaff so the restaurants can redistribute the income. So as the dishwashers and the cooks in the back are making more money, the waiters and waitresses are seeing a pay cut, according to foxnews.com.

Staying home can cause some hazards to your health, but not only that, it is extremely boring. Most college students only have a part-time job, which means a lot of free time, especially over the summer with nothing to do. With that being said, there is no excitement, no fun, just the same thing you did last summer. Who wants to do that?

Wellness Fair helps students relax before finals Mary Grace Keller Editor-in-Chief

Dogs, massages, free food and drinks filled the Ceddia Union Building (CUB) on Wednesday, ready for students to arrive at the annual Shippensburg University Wellness Fair.

The SU counseling center and human resources office combined efforts to bring 56 vendors to the CUB multipurpose room from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Each table offered a service that could be helpful to students.

The Wellness Fair comes at a time when the stress of final exams is beginning to set in.

Visitors to the fair received bingo cards with the names of different vendors on them. By going to each table students could check off spaces until they got bingo, which made them eligible to enter a drawing for raffle prizes.

One of the most popular tables, Kindly Canines, attracted a crowd

of students. Curious therapy dogs circled their new friends, pressing their noses into the hands of excited college students. Members of Kindly Canines also visit elementary schools, where students read to the dogs — the organization visits any place where it can help provide comfort to people under stress.

Chambersburg resident Jacqui Whitfield brought her 7-year-old yellow lab, More Love, to visit with SU students.

“It’s the feeling that we can give love back to people who are feeling stress,” Whitfield said of Kindly Canines.

In addition to the therapy dogs, the fair offered massages from New Day Yoga and Wellness, which drew a line of eager students. Carlisle Regional Medical Center had several tables available for people to learn more about their services in person, like through blood pressure tests.

Wal-Mart’s vision center performed eyesight tests to determine whether students had strong enough vision to drive safely. The Department

of Motor Vehicles wants drivers to have at least 20/40 vision in both eyes.

The counseling center had a tea tasting with information on the soothing effects of various types of tea. Chamomile, for example, can induce a sense of calmness and relaxation.

Chartwells Dining Services offered free samples of Starbucks drinks, green tea and passion tango.

While students tasted drinks, Dining Services Director Nick Iula used his time with students to educate them about the benefits of eating bananas. The fruit is high in potassium and can help reduce the risk of cancer, Iula said.

Sophomore Sylvia McMullen decided to come to the Wellness Fair after she had a bad morning and heard there would be puppies at the event.

“I’m really happy I went because it reminded me how much this school tries to help us mentally and physically,” McMullen said.

Student’s project aids in future for agriculture Ricardo Almeida Staff Writer

Since the spring of 2015, undergraduate student Aaron Einstein has been actively involved with the environment.

This includes working on the campus farm and being a member of the Shippensburg University SEAS, which stands for Students for Environmental Action and Sustainability. Einstein is a geoenvironmental studies major, and since he was a child, this is something that he has been interested in.

“As a kid, I was always outside, and I actually wanted to be a park ranger,” Einstein said, “When I came to Shippensburg I discovered the geoenvironmental studies major and I thought it was perfect for me.”

In the 2015 fall semester, professor Sean Cornell approached Einstein with one question. If you grow

potatoes in raised cages, does it produce a higher yield compared to the traditional in-ground method? This question would spark the sustainability project on which Einstein currently finds himself working.

To Einstein, one thing comes to mind when he thinks about sustainability, “When I think sustainability, I think of ensuring that future generations will have everything they need to survive.”

With this project, he hopes to find that growing potatoes in the cages will produce a higher yield because they are easier to harvest and have less soil and land disturbance. If he does find this method to be better, he could recommend this to urban farmers and this could help future generations sustain a healthy environment.

Also, no one was really monitoring the potatoes as often as Einstein finds himself monitoring his, which is at least three times a week.

In order to find his answer and to better control the experiment, Einstein used three different types of potatoes: Banana, Kennebec and white potatoes. Eight potatoes were put in the raised cages and another eight were put in the ground. In the cages, there are two inches of woodchips at the bottom, leaves, a little bit of soil, compost, potatoes and then more compost covering the potatoes.

Einstein will not find his answer until the fall.

Los Tres Cubanos take Harrisburg

Los Tres Cubanos is located in Shipoke, downtown Harrisburg.

As downtown Harrisburg undergoes many transformations in its bars and restaurants, the small historic area known as Shipoke offers its own new addition. Los Tres Cubanos opened its doors in July and has been inviting patrons to enjoy this “little slice of Cuba” ever since.

Los Tres Cubanos, or “the three Cubans,” is owned by Jose M. Manjon, Jose E. Misas, and Alfred Leal. Their roots in Cuba fostered a love of the culture and food that is evident as soon as you step through the door. With the sounds and smells of Cuba surrounding you upon entrance, you cannot help but be swept away into the experience. Bright colors and warm lights evoke the energy and feel of the tropics while the simple layout fits the quaint building.

Cuban artwork and photographs adorn the brick walls and a small bar is located in the back, where the bartender quickly mixes up signature cocktails. If you are in the mood for something tropical, try Los Cubanos, made with Sobieski Orange Vodka, cranberry juice and mango juice. For something a little more sophisticated, try the rye and honey Manhattan, prepared with Knob Creek Rye, Barenjäger honey, sweet vermouth, bitters and black cherry juice.

Drinks and atmosphere may be what draw you in, but the food at Los Tres Cubanos is what will keep you coming back for more.

The menu features five appetizers, four salads, 11 main courses and three desserts.

Each offers either a traditional or unique

twist on Cuban cuisine. Dishes range from empanadas to slow-roasted pork shoulder and even a whole fried snapper with mango and pineapple salsa. The best decision is to try a little bit from each course.

My party and I started with the empanadas and ceviche. The beef empanadas, or fried Cuban turnovers, were bursting with flavor. The savory meat filling was met with the subtle sweetness of raisins to deliver a perfect balance. The ceviche was teeming with bright fresh flavors, like citrus and cilantro, which marinated shrimp and bay scallops.

For our main course, two stand-out items were La Cubanita and Ropa Vieja. La Cubanita was their version of a Cuban sandwich.

Pulled pork, ham, Swiss cheese, mustard and pickles were pressed between two slices of Cuban bread, delivering a warm tangy sandwich you will not soon forget. Ropa Vieja, which translating to “old clothes,” is anything but. A traditional Cuban dish, Ropa Vieja is made with shredded beef brisket braised in garlic and bell peppers, olives, parsley and Spanish white wine. The dish is served over white rice and is reminiscent of a red sauce or stew, but with much more depth.

If there is ever a time you should leave room for dessert, this would be now. We sampled the Tres Leche, a traditional threemilk cake topped with whipped cream and a cherry. This moist cake offers a rich, decadent sweetness, while the classic dish, flan, is subtle and creamy, just the way it should be. And if dessert is not your thing, try ending the meal with a Cuban coffee or the Café Bombon, made with sweetened condensed milk. Either way, you are certain to end with a smile.

Los Tres Cubanos brings a wonderful “slice” of Cuba to the Harrisburg area with great food and atmosphere. To quote the owners themselves, “three times the Cubans means three times the flavors and fun!”

C2 Life from a gnat’s eye Nothing beats that ‘Ship smell’ Commentary NATALIE EASTWOOD Staff Columnist

If near-graduates are worried about missing Shippensburg, the one thing that won’t keep them here is the classic “Ship smell” that wafts into open windows on breezy spring days.

I woke up the other night to the intense smell of poop. My first thought was that a dog pooped in my room, but I do not have any pets at school. I briefly thought it was me, but I have a few years before I run into that problem.

Then, for the longest time, I was convinced that at some point during the day I had found poop and stuck it in my teal book bag. I mentally retraced my steps trying to think back to when I would have scooped up that treasure — would I have gotten poop after Dr. Drager’s class, or maybe during one of my interviews?

If I hadn’t been half-asleep I would have gotten out of bed and searched my teal book bag for the lumpy, brown culprits.

The smell was, of course, fresh cow manure, which periodically manages to infiltrate my apartment, even though I live downtown. So I

sprayed some air freshener and went back to bed, still feeling like my face was pressed into a cow patty — a heavily perfumed cow patty.

I do not remember that “Ship smell” on my visits to SU, but I do remember my first few nights in my freshman dorm room — fifth floor of McLean Hall (now “old” McLean). The odor was especially strong because of a cow pasture’s proximity to campus and since we were on the fifth floor, there was very little to obstruct the smell of cow manure wafting on the winds and through our window.

It was always so blistering hot in our dorm room, so our options were to shut the windows and roast or keep them open. Each night my roommate and I would sit on our beds and discuss what to do, but we always made the same decision — to throw open the windows and catch the slight breezes, which unfortunately carried with them a smell just as suffocating as the heat.

With the new, air-conditioned dorms being built, I am not sure how people have recently had the pleasure of trying to sleep in an oven-baked cow patty, but I am sure graduating seniors have similar memories. So if anyone is feeling overly sentimental about leaving Shippensburg, wait for a strong breeze on these spring days and hold on to your graduation caps as you run for the car.

Alex Shaw brings Brazil to SU with samba Marissa Merkt Staff Writer

While typical classes occur in lecture format with students seated at a desk and continuously fed information, a handful of Shippensburg University students learned through a samba workshop on April 15.

Alo Brasil band leader Alex Shaw presented professor Gretchen Pierce’s history of Brazil class with a samba and drumming lesson during their typical class period.

Shaw explained how it is good to learn with your hands in addition to textbook learning.

The workshop began with Pierce’s class forming a circle and attempting a simple pattern: Two steps forward, two steps back. As students grasped the concept, Shaw added new aspects to it, such as clapping, counting and even closing their eyes.

SU junior Megan Lawrence explained how it was easier to hear everyone when she closed her eyes.

Others felt this allowed them to relax to the music since no one was watching them, and overall saw it as beneficial.

“Your senses are heightened,” said SU graduate student Kendrick Gibbs.

Between sets, Shaw talked about syncopation and how it helps make music more exciting and funky.

“If everything is just ‘boom, boom, boom,’ after a while you get a headache,” Shaw said.

Shaw explained how instead, musicians use different rhythms and syncopation to create a tension and release relationship. He compared this to the action of the human heart pumping blood.

“This music has a purpose.

It’s not just about hitting a drum, but to mobilize and inspire people.”

–Alex Shaw, Alo Brasil band leader After students became comfortable dancing, Shaw moved on to teach about the samba instruments.

The first drum introduced was the surdo, which means “deaf” in Portuguese, since it is very loud. The surdo is used to mark time and functions as the foundation of the group.

Shaw also brought a caixa, or “box” drum, which is similar to the American snare drum. In addition, there was a tamborim, which is played with one hand and one plastic stick, and a repinique, which is used to call people’s attention.

Students selected one of the instruments to use and created poly-rhythm as each instrument section played its own pattern. Shaw repeatedly stressed that this style of music was a fluid conversation.

Each part fit intricately together to form a melody through balance.

Samba is played for both celebration and social conscience. Shaw described how samba was used to educate the Brazilian community about the African-American slaves residing there.

“This music has a purpose. It’s not just about hitting a drum, but to mobilize and inspire people,” Shaw said.

Pierce’s class is centered around the theme of music. She previously brought Shaw in for her class back in 2014. Emotions of war told in song and strings Marissa Merkt Staff Writer

In a generation in which the news is filled with endless conflicts, the Shippensburg University Orchestra and the SU Concert Choir combined forces to present “Peace in Time of War.” “Not only do we get to have a really large orchestra, which is lots of fun,” orchestra director Mark Hartman said to audience members, “this is the first time I’ve been here that we’ve ever worked with the choir.”

Typically, the department of music and theatre arts of SU presents separate concerts for the SU Orchestra and the SU Concert Choir.

However, this spring, Hartman and Elizabeth Shoenfelt, music professors at SU, decided to collaborate on Sunday in the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center.

The concert began with the orchestra performing “Peace Overture,” by Russell Peck.

As instruments gradually twinkled in, a gentle, soft tune took form.

However, once instruments came to life, there was an eerie feeling in the theater. Slowly, the song built up before reaching a repetitive section and then silence. The song

As the stage was adjusted for the second half of the show, Hartman turned to face the audience and provided some context.

Hartman told the audience that, although the words in the songs do not specifically talk about war, the

use of timpani conjures the idea of war.

The break between sets was also used to acknowledge the seniors leaving. Hartman commended them and the other SU Orchestra students for sticking with orchestra even though it is not a major on campus. All students, community members and facility members involved do it voluntarily and solely for the love of music.

After orchestra President Allison McEwen thanked all who contributed to the concert, the four professional solo vocalists appeared on stage in tuxedos and ball gowns.

Among the vocalists was Shoenfelt, who sang soprano. Shoenfelt worked as an assistant chorus master (performing assistant to the conductor) for the Harrisburg Opera and is a music professor at both SU and Wilson College. She also maintains a private vocal studio and directs the Susquehanna Young Women’s Chorale.

Singing mezzo-soprano alongside Shoenfelt was Leah Serr. Serr has performed in the Sarasota Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, Knoxville Opera and Central City Opera. She also sings with several other orchestras.

has performed extensively throughout central Pennsylvania, as well as abroad in locations like Weill Recital Hall in New York City and Smetena Hall in Prague, Czech Republic.

Pulling all three voices together was bass soloist James Barciz. Barciz is currently a senior at SU, majoring in French. He was accepted

into the SU Concert Choir and also became a member of the Shippensburg Symphony Festival Chorus, a select ensemble of 25 professional singers. In addition to singing for SU, Barciz was chosen as a soloist and member of the Madrigal Singers, where he sang at Cathedral Notre-Dame de Bayeux and La Madeleine in Paris.

Having the choir sing along with the orchestra added an extra element to the concert. The concert choir and four soloists would continually battle back and forth and echo one another during the song “Missa in Tempore Belli,” which can be translated to “Mass in Time of War.” “Mass in Time of War,” written by Franz Joseph Haydn in 1796, was a response to the French Revolution.

Haydn applied sounds of the timpani to imitate the noise of cannons firing.

While the opera-like singing added an element of sadness, the song was overall peaceful and uplifting.

At times, it felt like the audience was teleported to an old-fashioned carousel, rather than to a battlefield.

The journey came to an end as silence erupted in the theater and the two musical groups’ hard work over the semester came to a close.

D2 SAILESH transfixes reality with hypnotism for SU students MOLLY FOSTER Staff Writer

Close your eyes. You are getting tired. Your eyes are getting heavier.

You are falling deeper and deeper asleep.

This rush of fatigue is not from the end of the semester’s vigorous workload, but from the hypnosis of SAILESH, an award-winning comedic hypnotist, who performed at Shippensburg University on April 14 in the multipurpose room of the Ceddia Union Building.

SAILESH’s devious half-smile said it all from the beginning of the show. He knew what was in store for the audience, but they, on the other hand, were about to get their minds blown.

Eighteen chairs sat vacant on the stage behind SAILESH. Upon welcoming those from the audience to join him, both eager and hesitant students filed their way up onto the stage to occupy them.

With relaxation, prompts from SAILESH and the sheer power of their own minds, half of those students drifted into a deep, hypnotic state.

After complete and utter relaxation was reached by the participants, the combination of SAILESH’s touch and the command “sleep” left their bodies limp and their heads dangling.

From that moment on, the brave nine were no longer in control of their own bodies and were left susceptible to all the embarrassing things that they were about to do on stage.

The first hypnotic skit of the night began with SAILESH prompting the participants to visualize the temperature dropping down to 30 degrees and snow falling and laying on the ground around them.

Those up on stage started to rub their hands together, shiver and nuzzle up to whoever was sitting next to them, despite the reality that they were in a room that was nowhere near freezing.

The rest of the night grew far

Capitol Steps satirizes U.S. politics at Luhrs JUSTIN LEE

The comedic group Capitol Steps put on a laughing riot at the H. Ric Luhrs Performing Arts Center last Thursday.

Capitol Steps started its run in 1981, commentating on the political atmosphere of the United States and the rest of the world. Anything that has happened, any ideas that people have thought of, attitudes toward those in office and running for president of the United States, the comedians of Capitol Steps have taken and made fun of it.

Nancy Dolliver, Janet Davidson Gorden, Corey Harris, Brad VanGrack and Jamie Zemarel took everything that happened up to the point of Hillary Clinton winning South Carolina and speculation of Mitt Romney running for the Republication nomination of 2016.

But making fun of politics is one thing. Matching it to exactly what you think is another level of talent.

Take Bernie Sanders — I am sure a section of the American electorate sees Sanders as a pot-smoking hip-

py whose rhetoric is that of spouting verses from the songs of Bob Dylan.

Sure enough, that is the scene VanGrack creates.

Some may see Ted Cruz as a cowboy who wants a new nation called “The United State of Texas.” Capitol Steps brilliantly has a scene depicting Cruz as a rogue cowboy on a wooden horse, singing in a twang about how Obamacare is the worst thing ever and how conservatism will save the world from ISIS. The audience could not stop laughing. It consisted mostly of senior citizens. For a demographic who has seen politics change so many times during the 20th century, they understood everything.

It was pretty easy to tell whom the audience preferred. Bernie Sanders’ character received the most applause, while Donald Trump received the least. But for laughs, they were equally shared.

With all the drama and anger that has surrounded the presidential campaign of 2016, it was relaxing to just laugh at it all off.

SAILESH convinces Shippensburg University students to fall asleep on stage in the multipurpose room of the Ceddia Union Building. SAILESH simultaneously explained his exceptional talent throughout the show, cracking jokes and minds alike. more hilarious and, as some may say, disturbing, as SAILESH made a belt “turn into a snake,” and the hypnotized individuals twerked, slow danced, jammed out with invisible instruments or even became their opposite sex alter ego.

The audience was booming with laughter the entire show as they watched their fellow students involuntarily embarrass themselves on stage.

Shippensburg University senior Crystal Hartman, who was hypnotized by SAILESH during the show, said that while she was on stage she had no control over what she was doing.

“I’ve been hypnotized before, so since I experienced the process before, I didn’t think I would actual-

ly let myself fall under hypnosis again,” Hartman said, “but once I closed my eyes and followed what I was told to do, I was out.”

“Even though I had no control over what I was doing at the time, it was still a lot of fun,” Hartman said.

With the count of three and a snap of SAILESH’s fingers, the nine who were willing and brave enough to give their minds over to SAILESH for the evening were awakened from their hypnotic state.

Pondering, student and musician Tyler Michael Law fiddled his upper lip with an index finger, wearing a casual button-up blue shirt, grey dress pants and white bowling shoes.

Sitting in an apartment that is shared with friends, on his blue 1985 furniture donated by his parents, Law sank into his answers, just as he sank into his comfortable couch.

Law has attended Shippensburg University since the fall semester of 2014, majoring in communication/ journalism.

As a freshman, he joined The Slate newspaper as opinion editor, and then became editor of the arts and entertainment section his sophomore year.

Now, he focuses on starting his ambitious solo musical career, while balancing the many hours of schoolwork and paying rent.

Law has performed as a solo acoustic act many times throughout the Shippensburg area, as well as in Washington, D.C., Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Lancaster, Pennsylvania and several other cities.

He has always had his heart set on entertaining others.

His first real experience of feeling success was when he was 16, participating in a talent show at Palmyra Area High School in Palmyra, Pennsylvania.

ended up winning the talent show and was applauded.

“Winning that talent show and getting a positive response was one of the most satisfying experiences of my life,” Law said.

Later, Law was nominated for a Hershey Apollo Theatre Award for “Best Lead Actor in a Musical,” for his role as The Cat in the Hat for “Seussical.” The award is given for exceptional acting for high school students in central Pennsylvania.

“I got to perform a song at the Hershey Theatre in front of 2,000 people and that was very satisfying.”

Looking deep into his psyche, he discussed his role as an individual and artist.

“I want people to think of me as a creator and it’s also important that people see me as a person,” Law said. Law is not just a musician. He is an actor, a poet: “I like to create things,” Law said.

Law made a great distinction that those we see as actors and famous, “we stop seeing them as people.” His desire to be human is key, and music helps humans be closer to other humans.

“Sometimes musicians have crowds of 30,000 people, and it’s amazing that they are coming together to see someone do something incredible,” Law said.

The emotion that is brought together by way of music is something that Law says is beautiful.

Despite his loose, semi-casual choice in clothing, Law has embraced the idea of bringing people together through art.

“The venue of having people together with similar interest of what’s going on, it makes it easier to talk about other things with those people,” Law said.

Law’s style that he has gravitated to over the years is that of old-country music influence, based on good storytelling.

His upcoming EP of six tracks, “Highway B o r n , ” falls in line o f the typical American stories that everyone has experienced in some way, at one point or another, whether they realize it or not.

“Highway Born,” talks of a fight between a couple that seems never-ending, which parallels the infinite illusion of the road. This then allows the listener to form an image in their mind and relate to what Law is pouring out into his music.

“Imagery has always been important to me. I like pictures. I like when a song can put a picture in my head,” Law said. “It’s really important in music. The best songs are those that can paint a picture in your head.”

Another song, “Sleep,” talks about a collection of random images, like when he sings, “Candles flicker off the wall.”

The people that Law admires, like Johnny Cash, Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen, also have this ability to paint pictures through music.

Law said that even though they may not be complicated musicians, it is the substance of their music that matters most.

“It doesn’t matter how complicated the music, or how impressive your vocabulary is. If you do not have a reason for writing and a message, then I don’t think it’s worth doing,” Law said.

“I want people to think of me as a creator and it’s important that people see me as a person.”

“It’s like having a free concert, whether you want to go or not,” Okum said.

Okum explained that Law is always working, all hours of the day, and he admires that Law is devoted to what he is doing.

“I’m like a cheetah. I never stop,” Law said. But Okum thought that Law reminded him of a raven, looking down to Earth yet separate from it, reflecting on what the world should be.

Okum explained that when people see Law on stage, he is giving them his heart, “his physical heart, an organ, opening the floodgates of whatever he decides to share.”

“People have been relatively receptive about him and he’s always been able to get into venues. I’m sure it will continue to happen,” Okum said.

“A day might come where I’ll have to hang this up and I hope that doesn’t happen,” Law said. “I hope I can make a career out of this, but I’m glad that for the moment I can do what I love.”

Virtual Reality re-entering the gaming market Izzy’s View CARSON WOOD Guest Writer

The future is now. Actually, the future is running low on supply and is unaffordable, but baby steps are being taken.

The future is virtual reality (VR) headsets. VR is where you put on headsets that turn everything you see into a virtual world through the headset.

It will typically be used for video games, but it is not limited to that.

In fact, Six Flags, for example, is creating VR rollercoasters and Netflix has released its own VR app to watch Netflix in VR. VR is one of those futuristic ideas that has been talked about for many years and was even attempted with the Virtual Boy by Nintendo in 1995. The idea of VR is right up there with hover boards or flying cars, when people stereotypically talk about the future.

The first attempts at this new powerful VR headset concept were

by Valve, creators of Steam, “Portal” and “Half Life.”

With the HTC Vive, Oculus’ “The Rift” and Sony’s PlayStation VR, other companies like Samsung with the Gear VR have created less powerful, but more affordable VR options.

Two of those options have been

U.S. Navy personnel simulate sequences through a virtual reality headset, monitered by a computer. The idea of simulating real-life situations has been experimented with for video games, but now developers are making it afforadable. released recently. The Oculus Rift was released on March 28 at $599, and the HTC Vive came out on April 5, at $799.

These require fairly powerful computers to operate — you cannot run these on the laptops in the library. Customers are looking to pay at least $800 or more for a computer to run these, most likely more if you want to run them at better quality.

The HTC Vive requires a lot

of free physical space to operate.

Valve requires a minimum of 5 by 6.5 square feet in area.

To devote a whole room to this is not cheap, not including the software and games.

The extortionate price of the Rift and the Vive may be a bit expensive for most people. However, there are cheaper VR options hitting the market soon, if not already.

Samsung’s Gear VR, for exam-

ple, runs about $100 and works with most modern Samsung smartphones. It is not as powerful as the Rift or the Vive.

Sony will also be unleashing the PlayStationVR later this holiday 2016. The PlayStationVR will work on any PS4, provided you also have PlayStation Move controllers and a PlayStation Camera. Assuming you have a PS4, a PlayStationVR headset will cost around $500 to include everything you need. It is $400 for the headset alone.

There are some other limitations besides price that VR is facing. One is lack of content.

Most of the VR games that have come out, many feel, are not full games and are instead just demos. Valve released its first game in three years, called “The Lab.” It is not really a full game, though. Rather, it is just a couple mini-games to demonstrate the Vive. This is one of the biggest problems I see VR having.

The technology and possibility is there, just not the content. There is no game I can point to now and say, “This is why you should drop potentially a few thousand dollars for a VR headset.”

I would advise against being an early adopter of this technology. Instead, save your money for later.

SU to experience a ‘Spring Awakening’ BRENNAN JACKSON Asst. A&E Editor

An awakening is blooming at Memorial Auditorium. Act V’s production of “Spring Awakening” will be bold, energetic and entertaining once it arrives on stage later this week.

“Spring Awakening” contains strong adult content and will be uncensored. The show’s director, Christopher Ericson, decided it would make more sense to keep the show as it is. It would also take away the show’s meaning and what it stands for to censor certain parts.

Ericson went through an approval process involving University President George F. “Jody” Harpster and Vice President for Student Affairs Roger L. Serr.

“Spring Awakening” fuses mortality, rock ‘n’ roll and sexuality

into one thrilling musical. The production showcases the journey of finding yourself and exploring your body. The musical is set in Germany during the late 19th century.

“Spring Awakening” opened on Broadway in 2006. The musical was critically acclaimed and won eight Tony Awards, including “Best Musical” in 2007. The musical saw a Broadway revival in fall 2015. The revival closed on Broadway this past January.

The audience should be aware that the underlying message of the musical is very important. “[The audience] should take away the idea that kids are growing up, experiencing sex and it’s OK and normal,” Ericson said.

“Even if the audience does not like the message, it will make them think,” Ericson said.

April 21, 22 and 23, and at 2 p.m. on April 23 and 24.

The Netflix comedy that captured everyone’s heart is back this weekend, with 13 ready-to-binge episodes.

Season 2 of “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt,” created by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, continues the story of Kimmy Schmidt, who recently moved to New York after being rescued from an underground cult.

Season 2 lives up to the first season in every way, with funny and quotable jokes, smart storylines and an extremely talented cast.

This season mostly deals with Kimmy finding an equilibrium in New York and not as much with her escaping her captor.

Sadly, the first half of the season shows Kimmy’s friends beginning to take advantage of her kindness, as well as a boring subplot of Kimmy pining for a fellow GED classmate.

The ending of this subplot is completely unsatisfying and proves to be some of the most boring scenes of the season.

The second half of Season 2 gives a new depth to Kimmy and her interactions with her new psychiatrist, played by Fey. This explores some skeletons not yet revealed in Season 1. It also helps Ellie Kemper, who plays Schmidt, play her happy and extravagant self with some troubling layers.

As in Season 1, Titus Burgess is a genius actor. He delivers his jokes on the spot and on point and he even gets a nice relationship story, which ends better than Kimmy’s.

We also find Jacqueline getting over her divorce, resulting in a lot of shenanigans.

There is a lot more musical numbers this season, which is a lot considering the vast amount of scenes in Season 1.

Season 2 is an amazing follow-up to Season 1 and it will be exciting to see where Season 3 goes.

Megan Lundy earns second PSAC Top 10 award

Megan Lundy was spectacular during the 2016 indoor track-and-field season, earning herself a special PSAC honor for her running and academic success.

They say college is a blur full of memories that last a lifetime. Shippensburg University senior Megan Lundy sprinted her way through campus while maintaining a 4.0 cumulative GPA and winning two PSAC Top 10 awards.

On Wednesday, Lundy was nominated for the 2015-2016 PSAC Winter Top 10 award for women’s

indoor track and field. This is just one of the awards she has earned this season.

“I give a lot of credit to my teammates for helping me to be successful. The Shippensburg track and field team is such a strong program and my teammates push me every day to improve and better myself as a student athlete,” Lundy said.

Lundy received her first PSAC Top 10 nomination in the spring of 2015. In addition to winning two

awards, Lundy earned nine PSAC titles and placed eighth in the Division II 400-meter sprint.

At the conference meet in February, Lundy finished in third place for the 400-meter sprint. Lundy also participated in the 4x400-meter relay, where she helped anchor the SU team for a win.

As the track season is wrapping up, Lundy is preparing to compete for one final time before graduating from SU with a bachelor’s degree in

early childhood education. She has enjoyed her college career at SU. “I have loved my experience as a collegiate student athlete and I will miss participating in track and field. A huge thank-you to the teammates and coaches who have made my time in the program so unforgettable,” Lundy said.

Looking back over this past season, Lundy says her most memorable moment was when SU was battling with Slippery Rock Uni-

versity. Since the 4x400 meter relay was the last event of the meet, Lundy was able to help SU grasp the win.

In order to qualify for the PSAC Top 10 award, athletes must have at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA and athletic credentials.

Shippensburg has had more PSAC Top 10 award winners than any other school in the conference since the award’s creation in 1997.

SU alumna conquers the Boston Marathon William Whisler Sports Editor

A former Shippensburg University runner with an endless number of accolades can add another one to the list. On April 18, Neely Spence Gracey ran into United States history.

On Monday, Gracey ran the 2016 Boston Marathon, finishing ninth among women contestants with a time of 2 hours and 35 minutes in her marathon debut as a professional runner. Gracey was the first American woman to finish the 2016 Boston Marathon.

Gracey, a 2012 SU alumna, was born with running in her blood. In a 2012 interview with The Slate’s sports staff, Gracey said that both

her parents were long-distance runners so she has always had a drive to excel in a longer race.

According to ESPN, Gracey’s father, current SU men’s cross-country coach Steve Spence, was the second American man to cross the finish line in 1989. His daughter, Neely, was then born on race day while he was competing in the 1990 marathon.

At SU, Gracey helped lead the women’s 2011 cross-country team to four consecutive NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships. Gracey became the first athlete in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) history to win four straight individual PSAC cross-country titles.

In 2011, Gracey also medaled in the Pan-American Games, fin-

ishing eighth among some of the world’s top runners.

“I was really happy,” Gracey said of the Boston Marathon. “I met all of my goals out there. It wasn’t a fast day on the course, but I executed my plan and strategy very well.

I played it conservative to have a positive finish and I’m excited to it being the beginning of my marathon career,” Gracey said.

With a time of 2 hours and 35 minutes, Gracey finished just 5 minutes and 41 seconds off of the women’s marathon winner.

“I think SU set me up to have a successful professional running career,” Gracey said.

“Starting with my freshman year, I was a part of a team that won a Division II National Championship. It opened the door for me to

love the sport. It made the running experience more fun today.”

Attending the race was Gracey’s father, Steve, who got to enjoy Gracey’s success first-hand as a spectator.

“It was so nice he was there with me today. He went through this before and it was very special that we got to share it together,” Gracey said.

Among other proud supporters of Gracey were her twin sisters, Margeaux and Reynah Spence.

“I was able to watch part of her race in philosophy today and I was so excited to see how she did,” Margeaux said.

White knocks off Red 13-3 in annual Spring Game Darren Braxton Staff Writer

Spring is a season of new beginnings, and April 16 marked the official start of the 2016 Shippensburg University football season.

The Raiders kicked off the year with their annual Red-White Spring Game. The White team was victorious, 13-3.

The White team included the first team offense and the second team defense, while the Red team featured the first team defense and the second team offense.

The White team scored the lone touchdown in the low scoring affair on a Cole Chiappialle 24-yard run.

Chiappialle — the transfer running back from Penn State — had his run set up by his own flea-flicker pass to wide receiver Brady Forney for 43 yards.

Chiappialle finished the game with 64 total yards and the touchdown. After the game, he was feeling good about his performance.

“It’s been almost about a year and a half since I really played football so it’s good to get back out there,” Chiappialle said. “My line did a great job today, and I can’t do anything without them so all the glory goes to them. It was a great day for Shippensburg.”

Quarterback Ryan Zapoticky led the first team offense, completing 17­-24 passes for 175 yards, and running for another 13 yards on the ground.

“I felt, as an offensive unit, that we did pretty decent. We did a great job of moving the ball down the field, but we just need to finish drives a little better and that will come with time,” Zapoticky said.

The offense looked good, but the defense and special teams were the stars of the show on Saturday. The defense had a combined 12 tackles for loss including seven sacks. The defense was lead by linebackers Allen Holman and Tyler Emge. Emge lead all tacklers with nine total for the game. The breakout freshman Richard Nase looked good with

Kicker Billy Deane had a great day by going 3 ­for ­5 on field goal attempts Saturday, including a long of 54 yards in the second quarter. He kicked for both teams and ended the day with a 33-yarder at the begin-

ning of the fourth quarter. Deane said of his longest kick, “It feels great honestly, and it’s about time for me. I feel like I had worked really hard for it and hope there’s more to come.”

The second-team offense and defense did not disappoint either.

London Whitfield led the charge for the second-team offense rushing at-

tack, with 37 yards on the ground, and seven more yards through the air. John also impressed, with three tackles including two sacks.

The Raiders 2016 season will begin in Springfield, Massachusetts, where the team will take on American International University.

Women’s outdoor track and field wraps up great weekend at Bucknell Cat Amoriello

The Shippensburg University women’s outdoor track-and-field team had a great weekend at the Bucknell University meet.

Saturday, April 16 Sophomore Tamara Ovejera was the highlight of the first day of competition, with a record-breaking performance in the discus. Ovejera threw 159 feet and 6 inches to break the 32-year-old school record. Her throw placed her second at the meet and was also an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark.

Junior Sarah Hunt led SU in the triple jump with an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark of 39 feet and 7 and 3/4 inches. The jump earned her a third-place finish in the event.

Senior Brianna Davis competed alongside Ovejera in the discus event. Davis threw 149 feet and 8 inches, which placed her fourth and earned her a spot in the NCAA Provisional meet.

Sophomore Crystal Hartman represented SU in the javelin with an eighth-place finish and a throw of 135 feet and 7 inches. The throw qualified Hartman for NCAA Provisionals.

Sunday, April 17

Hunt snagged first-place in the long jump with an NCAA Provisional qualifying mark of 19 feet and 11 and 3/4 inches. Sciremammano placed seventh in the same event with a mark of 18 feet and 9 and 3/4 inches, while freshman Abby Wagner placed eighth with a jump of 18 feet and 4 and 1/2 inches.

Sophomore Kali Hepner took fifth-place in the pole vault with a mark of 11 feet and 9 and 3/4 inches.

Ovejera finished her weekend with a sixth-place finish in the shot put and an eighth-place finish in the hammer throw. She threw 43 feet and a 1/2 inch and 157 feet and 1 inch, respectively.

The second day of competition Shippensburg will host seven held two first-place finishes for the teams this Wednesday for the SU Lady Raiders.

E4 Players recall Robinson’s legacy 69 years later William Whisler Sports Editor

To many people in the United States, April 15 is tax day. For Major League Baseball, however, it is something much different.

On April 15, 1947, Jack “Jackie” Robinson broke Major League Baseball’s color barrier. Robinson became the first African-American to play in the all-white professional league at the time. Now on April 15, players all around Major League Baseball honor Robinson’s legacy by wearing his No. 42 on the backs of their jerseys — cementing Chris Bostick of the Harrisburg the day as “Jackie Robinson Day.” African-American players Chris In Minor League Baseball, this is different. Certain teams in the Bostick and Kevin Keyes of the minor leagues honor Robinson by Harrisburg Senators — the AA afwearing the No. 42, but not all filiate of the Washington Nationteams in minor league baseball als — reflected on their thoughts before their game with the Reading participate.

Fightin Phils on Jackie Robinson Day. “It means a lot. When you think about it and look back to see where we are now and where we used to be, it’s really not possible without everything that he has done,” Bostick said.

“I think that really everyone can say the same thing when it comes to equality and opportunity, that he is probably right up there with Martin Luther King — just helping the cause and letting everything be what it is now.”

“It means a lot. He really set the bar for African-Americans playing baseball,” Keyes said.

“In his time, colored people weren’t an equivalent race, but what he did to provide, and what he meant to the game today for African-American baseball players

is huge. Going through the rough times of being called vulgar names and receiving death threats and stuff like that, I can only imagine the toughness he had. What he did and what he sacrificed really helped us be where we are today.”

Both Bostick and Keyes spoke highly of Major League Baseball’s effort to preserve Robinson’s legacy through the yearly honoring of Robinson with his No. 42 draped across every players shoulders.

“I think they do an incredible job.

I think it’s awesome seeing every player wear No. 42,” Bostick said.

“I wish we could do it down here, and I think that it is something that is really important. He should be recognized and he deserves that recognition. I think that all the things [major league baseball] is doing and all the things they will do

is earned and they should continue, for sure.”

“I think it’s amazing — for all races to come together on one day to honor a figure that sacrificed so much for his family and for himself to play the game that he loved.

I think it’s just a great thing for baseball to remember him every year and remember the sacrifices and the way the game has changed since then,” Keyes said.

Even though not all minor league baseball players get the chance to wear the No. 42 on Jackie Robinson Day, both Bostick and Keyes both have had the opportunity to wear 42 in honor of Robinson.

“When I was in high school my junior and my senior year. I wore No. 42 for that reason. Thinking back on it, I kind of wished I wouldn’t have,” chuckled Bostick. “Not that I was disrespecting it — I was doing it for the right reasons — but I don’t know that I have really earned the right to wear that number. I wore the number [to remember Robinson] and for that reason specifically. It was an honor to do that.”

“I think it’s great. I actually have only worn it one time when I was in college my junior year,” Keyes said. “Jackie Robinson Day came up and we were playing, and I went to my equipment manager (to ask) if it was okay to wear the No. 42, and he asked my coach and he was all for it. For me, being able to do that was huge and I definitely won’t forget it.”

SU men’s track and field break multiple records Cat Amoriello

Asst. Sports Editor The Shippensburg University men’s outdoor track and field broke many conference and school records at the track and field meet held at Bucknell University this past weekend. The day marked one of the most successful days in SU history.

Sophomore Bryan Pearson and junior Kieran Sutton were the highlights of the first day of competition, with Pearson breaking a conference record and Sutton breaking

SU’s oldest record on the books.

Pearson broke the 45-year-old conference record in the discus with a throw of 181 feet and 10 inches.

The impressive throw earned him a first place win and an automatic spot in the NCAA competition, which will be held in Florida this May. Sutton broke the school record in the 10K with a time of 29:14.62, which placed him in third at the meet. His time guarantees him a spot in the NCAA competition as well.

Sophomore Alex Balla also had a great showing in the 10K, with an

NCAA Provisional qualifying run of 30:35.75.

Senior Chris Mullin qualified for NCAA Provisionals in the 3K steeple run with a time of 9:12.92. Mullin placed fifth in the event.

Senior Ryan Hart competed alongside Pearson in the discus and also performed well, with an NCAA Provisional qualifying throw. Hart placed third with a mark of 163 feet and 1 inch.

Junior Derek Nothstein led SU in the javelin with a sixth-place finish. Nothstein threw an NCAA Provisional qualifying throw of 203 feet and 2 inches.

The second day of competition held even more accomplishments for the Raiders.

Sophomore Dru Adighibe took first place in both the 100-meter dash and the 2000-meter dash.

Adighibe broke the 200-meter record a second time this past weekend with a time of 21.28 seconds.

Senior RJ Smith competed in the 100-meter dash as well and finished eighth.

Sophomore Pat Manna and junior Connor McHugh competed in the pole vault and placed seventh and eighth, respectively.

Sophomore Alec Rideout and

Pearson both threw NCAA Provisional qualifying marks in the shot put event. Rideout threw 55 feet and 7 and 1/2 inches which earned him second place and Pearson threw 52 feet and 10 and 3/4 inches for a fourth place finish.

Junior Caleb Bartlett finished fourth and graduate student Wulf Sutcliffe finished fifth in the hammer throw event. Both of their throws qualified for NCAA Provisionals.

Shippensburg will host seven teams this Wednesday, April 20, for the SU Invitational set to start at 3 p.m.
