We set aside this space to publish these letters for others to enjoy. This newspaper is not responsible for individual opinions expressed on its editorials, commentaries, ans speakouts. The Southern DIGEST reserves the right to edit any contributions and or reject them without notification. Authors are encouraged to limit the length of submissions to 300 words. Letters should not include libelous statements. Offensive and personal attacks will not be permitted. The DIGEST will not print “open letters” addressed to someone else. All contributions must be type written, signed and must include the author’s address and phone number. Unsigned letters will not be printed. Southern University students should include their majors, hometowns and year in school. When referring to specific DIGEST articles, please include the date and title. Fall commencement U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Perdue set to speak Whitney Thomas

The graduation speaker for Southern University’s Fall Commencement Ceremony on Friday, December 13 is Sonny Perdue. Perdue has been serving as the 31st United States Secretary of Agriculture since 2017. As a former governor, Perdue has a wealth of knowledge and experience in the realm of poli-tics as well as business. A veterinarian and farmer by trade, Perdue has been given the task of improving and safeguarding the United States’s farm land and agricultural centers, with plans to maximize the amount of men and women in the agriculture sector. Prior to becoming a poli-tician, Perdue was a successful businessman with a strong work ethic, having achieved the rank of
captain in the United States Air Force as well as being the owner of three separate busi-nesses. Tesha Lewis, a nursing major and graduating senior, says Southern made an excellent choice by allowing Perdue to speak, “Southern is an Agricultural school, so to have someone speak that became very successful in agriculture is dope. I think he’s going to give off good energy and an understanding of how far hard work will take us.” Timothy Lewis a computer science major, and upcoming graduate says Perdue’s success out-weighs everything. “He’s successful in a field that most students come to Southern to succeed in, and he’s a hardworking businessman. I’m happy we have somebody who’s been where we are but also knows where they’re going.”
The general consensus among students is that they want Perdue to be concise while still being able to deliver a thought provoking and positive message throughout the speech. John Bennit a English major, and upcoming graduate expresses, what he would like to see in a speaker, “I’m really big on points and delivery. I enjoy when everything just flows together and each point is delivered precisely.” Students additionally would rather the speaker be rainbows and sunshine rather than fire and brimstone as many postgraduate students are nervous for what life after college will be, and how successful they’ll be in the long run. Alyah Washington says she’s seeking reassurance more than anything, “Southern is really all I’ve known, so
Perdue I’m a little scared to branch off on my own. I hope Mr. Perdue can share some words that’ll let me and some of the graduates know that everything is going to turn out fine.” The topic, direction, and tone of the speech is ultimately entirely up to the speaker, but what is not, is the fact that all of the graduates in attendance have come to the culmination of years of hardwork and ready or not, a new chapter of their lives are upon them.
A Final farewell
With 40 strong issues of The Southern Digest published under my leadership, I am reluctant, yet proud to announce that my journey as Editor-in-Chief has come to an end. I want to thank our readership for sticking with me, and trusting my work for our beloved institution. Though, I could not have done it without the support of everyone on staff, so trust that the work has only begun. To my loyal “Digesters,” thank you for taking leaps and bounds with me to assure that the student body was well informed at all costs. I trust that you will continue to uphold The Southern Digest as the Sentinel of An Enlightened Student Body. Remember: your journalistic integrity always comes first! My time at Southern has been a four and a half year journey of laughs, trials, smiles, tears, good times, drawbacks and sacrifice, but at the end of the journey is triumph, which is the greatest feeling of all. Some said I couldn’t but, I’m here to say I DID.

Alcorn intercepts Southern’s SWAC title hopes James Eaglin, Jr.

Much of the immediate conversation from those who were among the 22,000+ in attendance last Saturday at the 2019 SWAC Championship Game rematch between Southern and Alcorn State followed the same dialogue:“Did we win?” “No.” “Why?” “Turnovers.” (give or take a few certain words) The championship-caliber atmosphere and the several momentum shifts made the turnovers appear insignificant, as the game was highly competitive until the fourth quarter. Ultimately, the game wasn’t decided by who held the ball the longest, but simply who held the ball. The Jaguars were able to control the field position battle at Spinks-Casem Stadium early thanks to dominant defensive plays. 2nd team All-SWAC defensive back Tamaurice Smith ruined Alcorn’s opening drive with an interception, but Southern failed to capitalize as QB Ladarius Skelton fumbled in the red zone. The Jags were eleven yards away from a touchdown on their next offensive drive, but Skelton’s pitch to Jared Sims was intercepted by an Alcorn linebacker, who returned it 84 yards. Sims’ biggest run was arguably chasing down the defender from behind and preventing him from reaching the end zone, tackling him at the 2 yard line. The very next play saw Sims’ effort rewarded, as Jakoby Pappillion recorded an interception in the endzone, preventing points on the

scoreboard while marking the fourth turnover of the game. For nearly 13 minutes, there were more turnovers than points scored. Sims made sure Southern was able to score first by running for a 32yd touchdown. Alcorn responded quickly, returning the ensuing kickoff for a touchdown, tieing the game in a matter of seconds. Southern’s next kickoff return wasn’t as successful, with a fumble from Hinton resulting in the Jaguars offense having to take the field deep inside their own territory. So deep, that a holding penalty on the Jaguars offensive line resulted in a safety, putting Alcorn on top 9-7. Skelton led the Jaguars to lhe end zone with his first rushing score of the game, giving Southern a 14-9 lead. However, the Braves again responded quickly, only needing 5 plays to regain the lead. With the score at 16-14, the Jaguars would end their next two drives with turnovers, but the defense held their ground and forced Alcorn to a turnover on downs and a punt in both instances. Kicker Caesar Barajas missed a 50yd field goal that would have given Southern the lead to end the half. Both teams added an interception to their turnover tallies in the third quarter. The scoring difference came from special teams. Whereas Alcorn missed their field goal opportunity, Barajas was able to redeem himself and give Southern a 17-16 lead after converting a 41yd attempt. In the final 15 minutes, Alcorn’s offense became more efficient, scoring on every possession. Outside of a 5 minute touchdown drive, the Jaguars failed to reach the end zone enough to keep up with the Braves. The game was sealed with Skelton’s third interception, which was returned for a touchdown. The final score was 39-24, ending Southern’s 2019
season with a record of 8-5. Skelton finished the game throwing 18/30 passes for 159 yards and 3 INT. Senior linebacker Calvin Lunkins lead the team with 12 tackles. “That’s what’s tough.” said Odums. “A bounce here, a bounce there, this game could have gone another way. But you’ve gotta create those bounces,” When asked about season reflections, a calm and collected Odums replied with perspective, reminding the media about the team’s 1-3 start. “We were supposed to be here, and we had our chance to change the outcome,” “I know it hurts, but you can’t let losing define you.,”said Odums to his team following the loss. “When those 60 minutes are over, you can’t have no regrets, because you can”t go back. The Jaguars are still hunting for their first SWAC title since 2013. Coach Odums now drops to a record of 1-10 vs. Alcorn State.
