City Tours seek to roundup new Jaguars BY JHAYLON GREEN
SOUTHERN DIGEST - STAFF WRITER
Southern University has embarked on a journey to increase enrollment by touring cities in Louisiana and surrounding states this year. “These tours give us an opportunity to take Southern on the road. Due to intensified recruitment efforts, there has been an increased interest in attending Southern University. Each year, the number of applications received has increased,” said Vice-Chancellor of Student Affairs & Enrollment Management Dr. Brandon K. Dumas. The first city toured by Southern was Houston, Texas, on a Saturday at Lily Grove Missionary Baptist Church. Lafayette, Monroe, Shreveport, Alexandria, and Lake Charles have all been successful stops for the Southern University administration, with the only remaining stops being in Donaldsonville and New Orleans. “We have identified cities in which we have strong alumni bases, and cities where students have generally expressed an overwhelming interest in Southern University,” said Dumas. These tours

Della NetterPerkins, a longtime counselor and instructor in the Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes (D.M.R. Spikes) Honors College at PERKINS Southern University Baton Rouge, was elected president of the Louisiana Collegiate Honors Council (LCHC) during the group’s 2017 annual meeting, March 18, hosted by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. The LCHC aims to promote academic excellence and scholarly pursuits by Louisiana’s Honors students, and to be the role models for their peers on most campuses. Exposing students to the practice of research-related communication and networking is a central objective of the annual conference. “Congratulations to Mrs. Perkins for this high leadership position. The Council made an excellent choice, as Mrs. Perkins’ competency, dedication, and professionalism are exemplary,” said Diola Bagayoko, dean, Dolores Margaret Richard Spikes Honors College, director, Timbuktu Academy and LSLAMP, and Southern University System
Distinguished Professor of Physics. This year, as in the past, students made scholarly or technical presentations to their peers and faculty members attending the LCHC meeting. They also engaged in a celebration of scholarship through quiz bowl games. Perkins and Eric Pugh, recruiter and program associate, D. M. R. Spikes Honors College, accompanied twelve SUBR Honors College undergraduate scholars to this conference. The conference theme was “Cruisin’ with the Cajuns.” Two D. M. R. Spikes Honors College scholars, Oscar McClain, a sophomore chemistry/chemical engineering major, and Kristofer McKinney, a junior nursing major, presented results from research activities. McClain’s presentation was entitled “Using a Micrometer Film Applicator to Determine Platinum Loading for Electrodes,” and McKinney delivered his talk, “Race-Gender Specific Associations between Sleep Characteristics, Allostatic Load and Stroke in the REGARDS Study.” According to Pugh, “the quiz bowl games were an opportunity for SUBR’s team to get additional practice before it travels to California, in April, to compete in the national Honda Campus All-Star Challenge.”
that have supported us historically. Also, we had made several stops in areas where the univerisity has not had a tremendous presence, in order to inform them of the many opportunities that Southern University has to offer,” said Dumas. The University has seen a recent drop in enrollment for reasons unknown, and has
also struggled with converting applicants into physically enrolled students, but the tours have had a positive effect on the numbers. As of Friday, 6,475 students have submitted applications for admission and 1,488 have been accepted into the university which represents 23% of the applicant pool being admitted compared to 15% of the applicant pool being admitted on the same date last year. Southern has not had to use any school funding to compensate the cost of these tours. The Division of Student Affairs and Enrollment Management have connected with local alumni chapters and different churches that donates to Southern. University vehicles are also used which bare little to no cost for the school, and student affairs covers the cost of any overnight stays. “My perspective is we take these trips, and some people look at the expense side of it but my position is, if we take these trips and get one student to come to Southern University, that investment pays for itself,” finished Dumas.

Striving for Gold, Stuck with the Blues: Jags bite the dust in Nailbiter BY ANDREW EVANS
SOUTHERN DIGEST - SPORTS WRITER
Last Wednesday on March 22, the Southern University Jags went on the road against Nicholls State. They came into this game coming off a two game losing streak against Prairie View A&M and the struggle would continue as SU came up short in a close contest with the final score reading 10-9 in favor of the Nicholls . Center fielder Javeayan Williams was 4-5 batting at the plate for the Jags while scoring 2 runs for the team. Designated hitter John Pope also had a total of five at bat, tallying in 3 Runs batted in (RBI) on two hits. Together the Jags combined for 11 hits, five RBIs, and six base on balls (BB). In the top of ninth, southern scored six runs to cut it close against Nicholls. In response to this Coach Cador said “We keep battling, we had opportunities early and we didn’t capitalize. To the credit of the kids, they didn’t give up. They kept fighting and fighting and tied the game in the ninth inning. As a coach, you like that they didn’t give up because sometimes, when you’re playing bad, teams give up.” Sadly on the defensive side of the ball in the bottom of the ninth, Southern Coach Roger Cador was tossed out the game for have a yelling confrontation with the umpire. Cador said it was

about a discrepancy of the strike zone. This was at a crucial part of the game as Nicholls had two outs with a runner on third base. Then closing pitcher Troy Lewis threw an unintentional low pitch that Southern’s catcher Bobby Johnson could not stay in front of, which cause
the runner from third to advance and win Nicholls the game. This was Lewis’ first lost of the season (3-1). When ask why Southern lost the game Coach Cador said, “Lack of concentration is the biggest issue I look at. Not understanding what you have to
do. You have to make adjustments with two strikes and put the ball in play.” Their next game is tonight against Jackson State University in Jackson, Mississippi for 6:00 p.m.
SU inks deal to play McNeese in 2019 COURTESY: SOUTHERN U. ATHLETIC MEDIA RELATIONS
LAKE CHARLES – The Southern Jaguars will be coming to Cowboy Stadium in 2019. “With our commitment to broadening the Southern University athletics brand, traveling to Lake Charles to face McNeese State provides a unique opportunity to add a storied in-state football program to our 2019 schedule and expose Southwest Louisiana to Jaguar football and the Jaguar Nation,” said Southern Interim Director of Athletics Roman Banks. A contract was recently agreed upon, and signed, by both school’s athletic directors, that will have Southern playing in Lake Charles for the first time on Aug. 31, 2019.
“We’re excited to have such a great program come to Cowboy Stadium, in what will no doubt, draw a big crowd,” said McNeese Director of Athletics Bruce Hemphill. “It’s always great when you can get an in-state team like Southern to come to your place. With their large fan base and alumni numbers, it will make for an exciting atmosphere and more than likely a capacity crowd.” McNeese visited Southern in 2004, beating the Jaguars 35-18 in the firstever meeting between the two teams on the gridiron. Drake’s “More Life”

Sesame Street introduces new Muppet that has Autism
Album Review BY KONNER JOHNSON
SOUTHERN DIGEST - STAFF WRITER
As we all know by now, ChampagnePapi, also known as Drake, has finally released his fifth studio album “More Life” and fans couldn’t be happier. Earlier this month, Drake released a video on his Instagram revealing the release date of the album which was on March 18th on OVO sound radio. After the response to Drake’s 2015 album, “Views”, the rapper superstar is back with a unique ‘playlist’ compilation. The 81-minute, 22 song long form is one of Drake’s finest mixes of songs that perfectly reflects his diverse musical influences and versatility. Though the emotional intensity of the album is more playful than serious, it is actually heavy on Drake’s patent feat tapping tunes. There are elements of Dancehall, European house and Afrobeat with collaborations with Kanye, Young Thug and Sampha. One of the tracks that listeners said stood out is “4422” featuring experimental British pop singer, Sampha, who sings about the miseries of long distance relationships and trust issues. Sources said that 44 is the Britain’s country code and

22 the area code for his lover. Sampha’s voice has a jarring, emotional quality that gives you goosebumps. Another track that apparently stood out is Jennifer Lopez’s “Teenage Fever” that has a nostalgic quality to it, and Drake’s flip just takes it further. In the song “Sacrifices”, Drake collaborated with Young Thug and 2 Chainz and takes a back seat as his collaborates steal the spotlight in the soulful track. “We the new Abu Dhabi,” raps Kanye West during his appearance on track 18 titled
“Glow”, as the two stars threaten to leave all their fame and fortune behind. But the track is a bit underwhelming; it does not reach the expectations that eager fans had been waiting for since this billboard in LA started the speculation of the collaboration. Other people seem to actually like the song and felt like Drake brought back the old Kanye. Drake seemed to have gone on a globe-trotting journey with the extravagantly long album. He takes it to South Africa for “Get It Together” then reaches
Jamaica for “Passionfruit” and “Blem”, and then journeys to the British music scene for “No Long Talk.” On More Life’s closing track “Do Not Disturb,” he acknowledges the bad spot he was in: “I was an angry youth while I was writing VIEWS/ Saw a side of myself that I just never knew.” Drake even lets his mother pipe in with a voice message two-thirds of the way through the record on “Can’t Have Everything” as she talks about her son for the hostile, See DRAKE page 10
Rather You Than Me BY BRANDON TUCKER
SOUTHERN DIGEST - STAFF WRITER
“I told Meek I wouldn’t trust Nicki” one of many reflective lyrics Rick Ross provides his audience on his latest musical offering ‘Rather You Than Me.’ Ross has always had a way with words proving time and time again how his lyrical skills only refine with time. The usual raps based on his lavish lifestyle are all present on this album but there is still something different about ‘Rather You Than Me’ compared to previous releases. There’s a hint of wisdom heard from Ross on each breath of his lyrics on this album. Ross and his label, MMG have felt the brunt of adversity the past few years from stories of inside quarreling to Ross being placed on house arrest in his newly acquired mansion in Atlanta, GA, formerly the home of Heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield. Ross seems
to use the wisdom gained from all of his adversity on Rather You Than Me. On the album Ross opens up about pressures of the industry and even speaks on his beef with former collaborator turnt foe, Brian “Birdman” Williams. On a Breakfast Club interview a lot of people including myself wondered why Ross even spoke on collaborator and friend Lil’ Wayne’s current contract woes. “Knew you would never visit BG…” hits heavy as one of the many scathing lyrics on Ross’ song “Idols Become Rivals”. As of March 20th of this year the famous children show Sesame Street announced that they will be debuting a new character for their “see amazing in all children” initiative. Her name is Julia and she will only be a new character for the television screen. Julia has been featured in Sesame Street book series and app. The show has not introduced a new character in nearly 10 years. After its 48 years of successful television broadcasting, the introduction of a new character should not only revamp the show’s rating but also reach a larger audience of children to help aid in their understanding of autism. Even though autism is something that people are now aware of, they are not exactly informed as to what autism does to the child it affects. Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by impaired social interaction, verbal and non-verbal communication, and restricted and repetitive behavior. It’s usually noticed within the first two years of childhood development. Some children may have their symptoms develop gradually, while others may reach their full developmental potential and then slowly regress. Sesame street’s senior writer Christine Ferraro told “60 minutes” that the character of Julia was complex because “ autism is not just one thing, because it is very different for every single person who has autism.” The puppeteer for Julia is a mother who has a child affected by autism by the name of Stacy Gordon. Gordon said in an interview on 60 Minutes, “Had my son’s friends been exposed to his behaviors through something like what they had seen on TV before they experienced them in the classroom, they might not have been frightened. According to news reports, the “Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta” star, Karlie Redd, has newfound relief as the one million dollar lawsuit filed against her by rapper, Christopher Powe, also known as Pharaoh, claiming she spread false information has been tossed. Pharaoh served Redd with a restraining order last year after she allegedly tried to ruin his reputation by saying that he raped her. On March 10, a final order entered the case stating that the judge dismissed the entire motion. Reports say the reason for the dismissal in the case was Powe’s failure to serve the reality star legal documents. The judge gave Pharaoh way more than enough time to serve Redd with the papers, the judge even granted Pharaoh with more days to serve Karlie, he just never followed through. In 2016, Pharaoh filed a police report stating that he and Redd were in a romantic relationship at the time, and got into an argument at an Atlanta hotel.
Pharaoh stated she “went crazy” and threatened to spread false allegations about him raping her to the press. Pharaoh said at the time of the incident, he tried to leave the hotel, but Karlie allegedly locked herself in the hotel bathroom with a couple of his belongings including two cell phones she threatened to flush down the toilet. Powe claimed that he decided to run down to hotel security, but by the time he got back to the room, Karlie Redd had already left the premises and his belongings behind. Redd later responded saying she was afraid and feared for her safety, and said she caught Pharaoh taking pictures of her while she was sleeping, which he denied. All this came down to Pharaoh suing Redd for slander and spreading rumors about him to the press. He demanded a million dollars in damages, a retraction, and an apology from her, and in the end he came out empty handed. Karlie Redd was granted a new lover, Ceaser from VH-1’s “Black Ink Crew!”
CIA hacked Apple devices in ways users can’t fix BY ANICK JESDANUN AP TECHNOLOGY WRITER
NEW YORK (AP) — New documents from WikiLeaks point to an apparent CIA program to hack Apple’s iPhones and Mac computers using techniques that users couldn’t disable by resetting their devices. Security experts say the exploits are plausible, but suggest they pose little threat to typical users. They say that many of the tricks are older — the iPhone hack involves the 3G model from 2008, for instance. The techniques also typically require physical access to devices, something the CIA would use only for targeted individuals, not a broader population. “The most notable part of this latest WikiLeaks release is that it shows the CIA doing exactly what we pay them to — exploit specific targets with limited attacks to support our national interests,” said Rich Mogull, CEO of the security research firm Securosis. Apple didn’t respond to a request for comment. The CIA has not commented on the
authenticity of this and earlier WikiLeaks revelations, but has previously said it complies with a legal prohibition against electronic surveillance “targeting individuals here at home, including our fellow Americans.” The agency declined further comment Thursday. DOCUMENT DUMP The leaks Thursday come about two weeks after WikiLeaks published thousands of alleged CIA documents describing hacking tools it said the government employed to break into computers, mobile phones and even smart TVs from companies like Apple, Google, Microsoft and Samsung. The latest disclosures are much more focused and consist of just 12 documents, all involving Apple products. The documents describe techniques for rewriting devices’ firmware in ways that would maintain a hacker’s access even if a user resets a phone or computer to factory settings. Doing so wipes out all apps and the operating system and installs a clean version; it is an extreme measure sometimes used to deal with

technical problems, but is also the sort of step that someone suspicious of surveillance might take when getting a brand new phone. A December 2008 document

Ross waxes poetics on a love interest while detailing his come up on “Maybach Music V” with assistance from Dej Loaf’s sultry voice. Even with all of the features Rather You Than Me is a very well put together album that can play from top to bottom and is worth a listen. In an article written by Preezy on XXL magazine’s website he says, “[n]ine albums removed from anonymity, Rather You Than Me secures Rick Ross’ slot within the list Top 5 of rap soloists to emerge from the South over the last 20 years, and is among his more cohesive bodies of work to date”. Throughout, Drake’s appetite for the music of other cultures remains ongoing. “I switch flow like I switch time zone,” he raps on “Gyalchester”, the song title itself a patois nickname for the neighborhood of Manchester. “More Life” will make you want to move your hips one moment, turn up and get in your feelings all in one setting. Johannes Ullrich, director of the Internet Storm Center at the SANS Institute, said NightSkies might not even be a current project given that the document was last updated in 2008, while the leaks appear to have come in 2016. Other documents released describe similar exploits for Mac computers. One hides in the firmware of Apple’s Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter and requires someone to plug in that adapter to install the malware. Another targets a specific Mac model, the MacBook Air with the Leopard version of the Mac OS system — current at the time, but now seven generations old.

might not have been worried when he cried. They would have known that he plays in a different way and that’s ok.” Children with Autism do not always lack in all areas of development. Stanford University conducted a study which found that Autistic children excel at numbers. Ph.D., Professor of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the school of Medicine, Vinod Menon said, “There appears to be a unique pattern of brain organization that underlies superior problem-solving abilities in children with Autism.” Though this may not be the case for all those that are having a communication problem, they still may be able to play an instrument as if they had done it their entire life. Social development will also play a key factor in helping establish that
connection as to why development is slow; an autistic child lacks certain interpretation skills. These interpretation skills are learned when in the early stages of development from paying attention to body language and facial expressions usually picked up from family members. If as many people took the time to understand this illness; there would be more empathy towards parents and siblings that help the child cope. So the next time you see an autistic child acting out in the store; do not ridicule the parents for not being able to get them to stop immediately, do not judge how they have to raise their child, do not scrunch up your face. Instead, empathize and understand that autism is not something that is easy to deal with for the children and those around them.

Rick Ross Drops New Album: Let’s Talk BY LYONEL NICHOLAS
SOUTHERN DIGEST - STAFF WRITER
Rick Ross is back at it again with the release of his latest project. His newest album titled “Rather You Than Me” sparked a lot of conversation amongst hip hop fans as a result of what some may call “disses” placed in some of his tracks. As a self-proclaimed top music critic and a fan of Rick Ross, I decided to give the album a listen and share my thoughts on what looks to be another great project for hip hop fans to enjoy. On the very first track “Apple of My Eye” Ross raps, “I told Meek I wouldn’t trust Nicki [Minaj].” Now, with the Nicki and Meek Mill’s breakup still fairly fresh, it makes me wonder what Nicki could’ve done to
warrant such a warning. As I continued through the album, it didn’t take me long to get to the next diss which comes from the Chris Rock-assisted “Idols Become Rivals.” In the song, Ross takes a couple digs at Cash Money Records head, Birdman, for his mistreatment of his artists like Lil Wayne and DJ Khaled. Birdman has made countless headlines for his beef with Wayne, but he’s also been the focus of several lawsuits from producers claiming they haven’t been properly compensated. So of course, with my prior knowledge of Birdman’s alleged behaviors, I conducted a search to see if he responded to Ross and he did. In an interview with Billboard, Birdman stated, “I don’t get caught up in that, I don’t play like that. I’m a man
and I stand my ground and I do my thing. Numbers don’t lie.” Disses aside, this album is pretty much classic Ross. What I mean by that is, many, if not most, of the tracks on the album were pretty predictable. My top picks off the album would have to include “Trap Trap Trap” featuring Young Thug and Wale. The flows and the hard hitting bass of the track stand out. However, “Game Ain’t Based on Sympathy” is at the top of my list. What I like about tracks like this is that Ross reflects on the times when he was living on welfare. It’s always refreshing to be reminded that some of today’s DIGEST ART successful people came from Let’s take this in, this is the definitely isn’t a new Ross, he’s the struggle, making them more ninth studio project from the still in the same lane and I think relatable to people like me. What makes me Black? More Life: Drake’s back BY KERRY WILSON
SOUTHERN DIGEST - STAFF WRITER
Rachel Dolezal is an American. She is a former civil rights activist and former African studies instructor. Just two short years ago, she was well respected for her activism and teaching. She is a woman who to this day believes that people shouldn’t be judged by the color of their skin. She was elected to serve as the president of the NAACP’s Spokane Chapter. However this all changed in June of 2015, the day people found out that she lied about being black. When she claimed to be the victim of a hate crime, her identity came under fire while being interviewed for a local newscast. Since then, she has been seen all over the country and interviewed by many reporters. Dolezal has made statements about how she always wanted to be black and that when she was a little girl she used to color herself with a brown crayon in her drawings. She has even written a book about her life called “In Full Color: Finding My Place”. The book was released on Monday, March 13, 2017 as her attempt to explain why she identifies as black. Despite her efforts, her statements have led to her being heavily criticized in America. Many people don’t agree with her and think that she is nothing but a liar and a con-artist. Her own parents have said that she has lied about many things including coloring herself black as a child. That’s not all. There have been people both black and white who have been offended by Rachel. Some even see her as a woman manipulating others for her own needs. However, there are those who actually show her compassion, but only out of pity because they feel as if she is mentally ill. One of her defenders being NBA legend, Kareem Abdul-Jabdar, who
said, “The black community is better off because of Rachel Dolezal.” Singer Rihanna even stated “I think she was a bit of a hero.” Dolezal is clearly being treated differently because of something that she feels that she truly is. So, after everything that has happened with her story, what do I think of Rachel Dolezal? I don’t think of her as a conartist, or as a person in need of help. I do believe that it is a little strange for a white woman to want to be a black person, but I have no room to judge her. I don’t look at her as a black or white woman. I don’t see her as a person trying to get sympathy or attention. I don’t see her as a crazy person. I see her as someone trying to help an important cause the best way that she can. Remember before all this started she was a civil rights activist, the NAACP’s president in Spokane, and a person who believed in being judged by her integrity not the color of her skin. None of this has changed what she believes; she identifies as a black person and I don’t see that as wrong. I feel like she really is trying to understand what it really means to be black. To be treated differently because of the color of your skin, or because of something you were just born with. She wants to understand it so she can help the cause. Honestly, I don’t see why so many black people don’t support her as opposed to rejecting her. I could understand if she was doing this just to be racist to black people, but that’s not the reason. As a teacher, she not only studied black culture; she fell in love with it. That’s when she decided that’s what makes her black. So, what makes you black? Is it the love of your culture or your parent’s biology?

Drake’s new LP or “playlist” as he calls it, was dropped March 18th, 2017. I’ll start this off by saying that I appreciate the homage he paid to the UK rap industry by featuring british artists Sampha, Giggs, and Skepta. I feel that this album is very versatile since Drake gives us B ritish vibes with his fake brit accent in “No Long Talk” featuring Giggs, and I was not a big fan of it. I can understand showing the UK love by featuring some of their artists, but rapping in the fake accent seems quite pointless to me. It throws the song off in my opinion. As anticipated, Drake has to throw a couple of R&B tracks in every album, which is the only reason I am a fan of this new playlist. I like R&B Drake better than rap Drake. Rap Drake seems like a facade in my opinion while R&B Drake has a legit vibe. If Drake was to drop an actual R&B LP I’d be the first to download, I promise. His sweet serenades are more appealing in my opinion, than his wanna be hardcore raps. Teenage Fever is my favorite R&B track on this LP as the song samples Jennifer Lopez’s “If You Had My Love.” The vibe of the track is very chill and mellow, exactly what I look forward to from Drake. I really appreciate the dancehall tracks that were put onto this playlist. To name one, Madiba Riddim. If
you are unaware of what dancehall is, it’s a type of uptempo Jamaican dance music. The beat of Madiba Riddim is very infectious, and would make a nun want to rip off her habit and shake a tail feather. Drake’s single, “Controlla” is a great example of dancehall. The playlist consists of 22 songs that total 81 minutes and 41 seconds long, which for me is a great length for an LP. Drake’s metaphors and lyrical content are pretty good in the album, but I wouldn’t say that Drake is “GOAT” material after this, but it did change my perspective on him and his versatility. I was the type of guy to listen to Drake only when I’m bored, but after this playlist, I may just have to change my mind. I like the vibe from the UK artists on the album. This album was different for Drake which I was not expecting. And if I had to rate this drop, I’d give it a solid 7/10. It’s available for play on Itunes, Spotify, Apple Music, and other various music streaming services.
