Welcome all, to the August/September edition of the Vine Magazine.

Summer now seems to be breaking into full flow which is good news for gardens, outdoor events and all things enjoyable, so without further ado let’s precis for you a few of said favourite things…

Pleasantness incarnate comes in the form of our fab Food Feature, from lunches, to dinners, lite-bites and full sit-downs, some of our best local eateries are on show offering quality and service to suit your budget, preference and palette. Take a look at what Beamanor Hall has to offer for example and why we think the Horse, Shepshed is definitely worth a visit (food feature, pages 27-31)!

Talking of getting out and above….activities and embracing the great outdoors is always a welcome relief at this time of the year so we happily bring you news of events already held (…to much applause) or those diarised that might take your fancy: from the Ivanhoe Challenge (raising over £5,000 for Wishes 4 Kids, see page 16) to My Run, My Way, a unique way of choosing your own running events to generate funds for Heart Research UK (page 12) to taking up Squash with the Ladies of Loughborough (page 22). There’s lots of hobbies, sports and interests to suit all ages, lifestyles and groups, so please peruse our pages for great ideas and news on many.

For a fab review of all things green, check out David Haddon’s report on Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club’s summer break, not just a very enjoyable read but informative too (turn to page 36 for more information), also on the subject are interesting articles on Newtown Lindford’s Gardening Club, courtesy of Anne and David Couling whilst it’s very promising to hear of the work the National Trust are doing with schools, in their “Schools into Gardening” programme (see page 36 and 37 respectively for the more detailed appraisals).

Our son Jake McCarthy passed away from an undiagnosed brain tumour. Jake was on holiday with his brother in Thailand when he had a seizure which left him in a coma, he underwent emergency surgery to remove a large brain tumour but devastatingly for his family Jake never regained consciousness and passed away on 24th December 2012 with his family around him.

Due to overwhelming support from family & friends we decided to set up The Jake McCarthy Foundation in 2013, to raise awareness of these deadly brain tumours, the biggest cancer killer of the under 40’s and to prevent other families experiencing our tragedy.

Since then we have been raising money at our events not only to raise awareness but to help fund research & find a cure, as brain tumours are woefully underfunded with only 1% of government cancer funding being allocated to brain cancer.

Our last big fundraising event was our annual cycle ride from Rothley to Norfolk, 100 miles, which took place on June 11th.

This is our third year of this event and this year saw 94 riders ‘Ride for Jake’. Our target for this year was £25,000 which we look to smash with money still coming in. Everyone seemed to enjoy the day and the weather was kind for a change!! Our finish line this year was at Caley Hall Hotel Old Hunstanton where we enjoyed an overnight stay with an evening buffet to celebrate our beautiful Jake.

We had two further fundraisers in July - the Rothley Duck Race and Robbies Rugby Festival 16th July, held at Loughborough Grammar school sports fields, where Jake was a former pupil - both events were a roaring success and we look forward to totting up the totals of money raised between the two.

10th Anniversity Open Day

After reaching the milestone of 10 years in helping young people stay safe, Warning Zone is holding an Open Day this August.

Warning Zone is a children’s educational charity, based at Frog Island in Leicester. By the end of this school year we will have had over 9,000 year 6 pupils (aged 10 & 11) visit us from Primary, Independent and Special Schools from Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Interactive learning is the key to our success and we educate the young people on how to stay safe both online and offline, whilst at the same time realising the age of criminal responsibility (which is 10) and discouraging anti-social behaviour.

The ultimate aim is to save lives, reduce injury and stop children and others from entering the criminal justice system.

It also helps them in their transition into early adolescence by equipping them with important and relevant life skills.

Our original eight interactive zones cover fire risk in the home, the dangers of electricity and building sites, alcohol, personal safety, water safety, arson and finally risks around the railways.

In September 2015 recognising the issues surrounding young people in an ever increasing online world we created our new E-Safety Zone which is designed as an old fashioned fairground. Within this zone each of the interactive stalls deals with issues such as grooming, phishing, cyber bullying, privacy settings and understanding all about your digital footprint and the dangers of sharing inappropriate images.

This new zone has now enabled Warning Zone to offer a full day experience rather than the half day as in previous years.

Free entry: Please join us on Saturday 13th August between 11am - 4pm for demonstrations, stalls and guided tours around our unique safety zones. Refreshments will be available to purchase on the day.

Bring the family and friends, all ages welcome, wheelchair friendly.

There will be exciting attractions and demonstrations from the Police, Fire Service, First Aid, Star Wars, various local sports stars, teams and mascots, Defib demo, craft stalls, a tombola and much more.

A Quacking Amount Raised!

The Rothley branch of the Nottingham Building Society and Harrison Murray Estate Agency are proud to have raised over £2,500 for local charities at this year’s Rothley Duck Race.

The annual event took place at Rothley Brook, Bunny’s Field, on Thursday 7th July with hundreds of people turning out to watch.

Alex’s Wish, The Jake McCarthy Foundation, The Tilinanu Orphanage and Warners Wish To Walk will receive the charitable proceeds.

Ben Price, Building Society Manager at The Nottingham in Rothley, said: “The event was an even bigger success than last year, with over 300 people turning out to watch the race. The weather stayed fine and a fun time was had by all!” www.thevineleicestershire.co.uk

Raises Over £5,000!

Due to the adverse weather, changes had to be made for the 8th annual Ivanhoe Way Challenge, a 37 mile walk around the Ivanhoe Way Footpath. Normally the event would start at 4:30am and follow the full 37 miles of the Ivanhoe Way public footpath. However, frantic last minute changes had to be made as some fields between Ashby and Whitwick were impassable as they were under water.

Event organisers Richard and Angela Bebbington made the decision on Thursday night to cancel the 37 mile route and offer the walkers of this challenge the opportunity to join the 20 mile challenge walk instead. This part of the Ivanhoe Way Challenge started at Stanton under Bardon, going through Nailstone and Shackerstone, along the Ashby Canal towards the Moira Furnace before going through Hicks Lodge back towards Ashby as this route was not as affected by the recent heavy rains.

Although the walkers of the 37 mile challenge were disappointed they realised that the unprecedented rain made this option impossible. However this didn’t dampen spirits as the walkers were supported at a number of checkpoints where tea, coffee and homemade cakes were on offer along with much needed encouraging support from the marshals.

As walkers approached each checkpoint many stories were heard being shared about people’s goals and motivations for taking part in the challenge, some very emotional and inspiring. One common theme we heard from many people was the good cause for which the event supported, Wishes 4 Kids.

The amount raised for this year’s challenge is over £5,000 which is amazing, and this keeps on rising. This brings the total raised over the event’s 8 years to more than £48,000, with over 400 people having completed the challenge. The true winners of this challenge are all the participants and the children who will benefit from all the money raised.

Despite having blisters, aches and pains, walkers enjoyed a warm welcome and a well-earned rest at the Ivanhoe Social Club with tasty soup and refreshments once they had completed the walk. A great atmosphere of celebration, elation and relief as everyone welcomed each team back, and continued until the last team finished.

One challenge walker, Gemma Chatwin from Team Wolseley said “It was great to take part with work colleagues and raise money for such a worthy cause. We all felt proud to be a part of this event which helps children’s wishes come true”.

Special thanks must go to all the volunteers who helped out on the day, Ashby Rotary for providing refreshments at Donisthorpe, and Leicester Search and Rescue who provided the first aid cover. Co-founder of the challenge Angela Bebbington says “Even after 8 years of organising this event with Richard, it never fails to amaze us how generous people are, whether it’s raising money for the charity, helping at checkpoints or baking cakes for the walkers. Not forgetting the walkers who keep coming back year after year” Without volunteers this event would not be able to take place, they all play such an important role in making the whole event a success. Many walkers commented on how great the support was at checkpoints with cheers of encouragement from marshals, really giving them a push and motivating them to keep going.

Richard and Angela Bebbington, the founders of this event, continue to support Wishes 4 Kids. In April 2016 they completed yet another challenge, running 4 marathons in 4 weeks (Paris, Manchester, Brighton and London), raising further funds for Wishes 4 Kids, who are a Leicestershire charity that grants wishes for children and youngsters who are life limited, terminally ill, have experienced life-changing physical or emotional traumas or have suffered major abuse or are diagnosed as HIV Positive.

Unlocking The Past In Newbold With A Biffa Award!

Newbold Heritage Group in Newbold Coleorton, Leicestershire has secured a £7,095 grant from Biffa Award; a multi-million pound fund that helps to build communities and transform lives through awarding grants to community and environmental projects across the UK, as part of the Landfill Communities Fund.

The project, which was awarded funding under Biffa Award’s Recreation theme, will create a heritage trail on the New Lount Nature Reserve that will bring to life this important part of local history. New Lount was a former colliery (1924 to 1968) and many of the former colliery features remain; such as the vehicle weighbridge. This new trail will aim to connect visitors with the social and engineering heritage of the area.

John Macdonald, Vice Chairman Newbold Heritage Group said: “We are very excited to have the opportunity to tell the story of this colliery and help to bring it back to life. We will be researching the history of the colliery, and the people who worked in it, and with the help of other local community groups we will physically uncover some features of the old colliery that still exist on the site.”

Viv Mann, local resident and volunteer said: “We are highly delighted we have been awarded the grant from Biffa Award to fund the New Lount Colliery Heritage Trail. This award recognises the hard work of the volunteers involved in researching the local history of this area and developing the Heritage Trail to promote the historical and industrial importance of Newbold and the surrounding area.”

Gillian French, Biffa Award, said: “We’re proud to use the Landfill Communities Fund to help tell this fascinating chapter in our history. Visitors to the reserve will not only be able to engage with wildlife but also gain insight to the industrial heritage of the local area.”

Podium In First Single Seater Race For Line

Local Lad George Line Gets Off To Roaring Start George Line got his F3 Cup Championship off to a flying start at Donington Park with a podium finish in his first single seater race.

He hadn’t been able to practice before the first round of the F3 Cup National Championship, so went straight into timed qualifying. This was the first time he had driven a single seater around this circuit. Getting faster and faster he managed a credible P7 for the first race.

Race one saw George move rapidly through the field to finish second to the delight of family and friends. A fourth place finish in race two has given Line from Thurcaston an excellent start to his first season in F3 racing.

Langford Line Motorsport are the smallest and least experienced team in the series but they are learning fast thanks to Lewis Caruthers, Mercedes F1 Apprentice Engineer, Faith Pickering on Data and ‘The Old Man’ aka Robin Langford (ex-boss of Langrop Anstey and George’s Step-Dad) all on board.

The team are now looking ahead to further success in the next round at Brands Hatch.

Thringstone Live Music Festival Thringstone Live is part of a huge drive to put on both exciting and creative events of all kinds, at Thringstone House Community Centre and what better way to that than via MTV-nominated singer Oliver Sean, who will headline a day of entertainment and live music at Thringstone House this August.

Having in 2016 already secured the likes of Vicki Michelle and Jonathan Ansell to come to the centre with stage and musical productions, the next large event is the Thringstone Live music festival, taking place on Saturday, 6th August from noon.

The headline act is MTV Europe Music Award 2012 nominated Oliver Sean, known for his Americana influence with acoustic rock. Other bands include The Bench That Rocked, The Lids, Dave The Rock Band, Fleetwood Jac, Dr K’s Gastric Band, Sweet Revenge, and Melissa and The Vibe.

A spokeswoman for the house said: “Having Oliver Sean is a huge coup, but Melissa is no stranger to large audiences herself, as she was on The Voice in 2014 in Tom Jones’ team.

“We have always been fortunate to have funding from County Hall, but this is stopping shortly, so rather than looking backwards at what was, we are looking to the future, to what we can now do to ensure that the centre continues to thrive.

“We are very lucky to have a popular panto and drama society at the centre which always attracts a lot of interest, and one of our latest things is a monthly soul club night, which is going really well. As part of moving forward, we feel that putting on a variety of large events which attract followers from both near and far is the way to go.

“We had a music festival at the centre for the first time last year, and this year are aiming to put on another good day out for families. We are having an acoustic stage inside this year, to complement the outside artists, as well as having the Thringstone House Soul Club disco at the end of the night.

“We hope that people come along and support us. The event is free.”

Women Get Fit, Have Fun & Try Squash With Loughborough Ladies During This Girl Can Week in June, Loughborough Ladies enjoyed getting fit and healthy while having fun, in the spirit of London 2012 by playing squash at Loughborough Leisure Centre, writes Donna Richardson.

A friendly and welcoming group, established well over a year ago, Loughborough Ladies always welcome new members, so if you have ever wondered what goes on, on a squash court, Loughborough Ladies can show you what’s what and have you playing in no time.

Every Wednesday evening at Loughborough Leisure Centre you will find a ladies squash drop-in session. Women of all ages are invited to come along, give it a try and meet up with other women to play some squash.

The drop-in session is enjoying tremendous success and one year on, Loughborough Ladies squash group are looking to welcome even more ladies to have fun, get fit and socialise. They are working in partnership with Fusion Leisure, Charnwood Borough Council and England Squash.

Women and girls from all walks of life have picked up a squash racquet after not playing for a while or have started from scratch. There is a fun and friendly atmosphere down on the courts, with expert advice, hints and tips and coaching from some of the best women’s coaches in the county. The group was started by Pauline Young with support from Sally Hurman.

Pauline said: “This started as just a few of us getting together regularly to play some squash but I am delighted that so many others have wanted to join in. Squash is a great game and whatever your level it is a great and easy way to get in shape! If you enjoy sport you’ll love squash and if you don’t usually play sport, you’ll be surprised at what squash can offer. It’s a great way to get in shape and have fun.”

The popularity of the drop-in sessions proves that anyone can pick up a racquet and get involved. All you need is a pair of (white soled) trainers and some enthusiasm and willingness to improve and the group will provide the racquets and the rest.

Lisa Singleton who joined the group recently, said: “I have been practising and have been inspired after an absence of at least 25 years to try to become fitter and to lose some weight. To my amazement I am enjoying it a lot. Thank you very much. I am really enjoying practising, that is the best thing - I love the experience and exercise and now look forward to it every week - that is not how I remember games lessons from school!”

Squash is on the rise... Indeed, many women who have never played before have shown an interest and beginner sessions have been set up on a Saturday to get even more women and girls benefitting from playing squash.

Get involved... what are you waiting for? Get on down to Loughborough Leisure Centre on Saturday afternoons and Wednesday evenings and Pauline and Sally will soon be getting you playing some rallies once you have mastered the basic techniques and rules.

Sessions for improvers take place at Loughborough Leisure Centre every Wednesday night from 6.30pm until 7.50pm.

There is also a Saturday group for beginners.

The Monday Club - Anstey, Thurcaston, Cropston & Rothley Once again, on Monday 11th July, our Members arrived in number to attend our third Strawberry Cream Tea at “The Blue Bell” Inn in Rothley, in warm and sunny conditions.

The Tea was a resounding success with 28 members, family and friends attending. The Tea room was comfortably arranged for our benefit, leaving plenty of room to accommodate the members to exchange news and views of holidays past and to come.

On arrival we were supplied with either Tea or Coffee which was most welcome as the weather was beautifully warm – a real July Summer’s day. We were then more than generously plied with large scones, jam, copious amounts of Clotted Cream (so thick you could stand your spoon up in it!) and then came the strawberries, large and delicious.

There was no restriction on servings of both the food or liquid refreshments to the delight of all concerned.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to our Deputy Leader, Sue Wakerley, for organising the occasion and together with our Treasurer, Gill Smart, the very successful raffle which yielded the generous sum of £31.00.

Also our grateful thanks go to the more than helpful and diligent staff of the “Blue Bell Inn” Restaurant whose efforts resulted in a very successful afternoon for The Monday Club.

Our next Meeting will be on Monday, 8th August, when we shall welcome a speaker from the Charity REMAP who are an organisation set up to utilise the expertise of retired, professional volunteers. North Leicester MG Club Drives Money In For Charity As a result of their successful 2015 classic and sports car run, the North Leicester MG Club was able to make a substantial donation to a local charity at the club’s June meeting.

With around eighty cars in attendance, representing around a dozen counties, the 2015 Charnwood Caper Run only fell short of 2014’s record turnout by a couple of cars, enabling the club to match that year’s charitable donation of £1000.

This year the chosen charity was Headway Leicester, and club members were given an interesting and in-depth insight into the charity’s work by Alison Leight with a slideshow-based presentation. Headway Leicester gives support to adults in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland who have brain injuries acquired as a result of a medical condition (e.g. haemorrhage) or as a result of trauma (e.g. road traffic accident). Their work includes running a day centre at Headway House in the grounds of Leicester General Hospital, where the focus is on the provision of practical activities to enable individuals to regain self-esteem, confidence and motivation, which can be seriously affected by brain injury. Although two-thirds of the charity’s funding comes from Primary Care Trusts and local authority social care departments, the remaining third needs to be raised from grants, gifts and donations.

The national organisation, Headway UK, was founded in 1979, and since then local groups and branches affiliated to it have developed all over the country, including Headway Leicester.

Following Alison’s presentation, North Leicester MG Club chairman, Colin Readwin, handed over a cheque for £1000 to assist with the work of the charity.

North Leicester MG Club meets on the third Wednesday of every month at the Lingdale Golf Club, Woodhouse Eaves, at 8:00 pm.

NATIONAL TRUST LEICESTER ASSOCIATION Stoneywell Cottage at Ulverscroft opened to the public just 18 months ago. Since then it has proved to be a popular National Trust property offering visitors a quality experience.

The property was awarded a Highly Commended certificate in the Small Visitor Attraction category at the Leicester and Leicestershire Excellence in Tourism Awards, whilst also receiving a recent Certificate of Excellence by the independent web site Tripadvisor. Stoneywell Cottage is now listed as one of the Top 10 visitor attractions in Leicestershire.

The cottage is kept in immaculate condition by a large group of conservation volunteers who clean and maintain the property every day. They also “dress” the rooms according to the seasons with summer objects mid year and items such as bed warmers in the winter.

The split level cottage consists of a dining room and a sitting room on the ground floor and five bedrooms and a bathroom upstairs. All the rooms contain some of the original furniture from 1899 when the cottage was built.

The four acres of garden are looked after by the NT gardener and 20 volunteers. Over the last three years they have worked very hard to bring the garden up to its current excellent condition. In the spring there are carpets of daffodils and bluebells and throughout the year over 50 varieties of rhododendron flower at different times, including in winter.

In addition the garden contains many varieties of plants, shrubs and trees including magnolias, a Handkerchief tree, a Chilian Firebush tree and a Wisteria to name but a few.

Since opening, the tea room has been refitted to offer more comfortable seating and the “shop” has been enlarged. The stable block has been tidied considerably and some old family photographs are now projected on to one of the walls.

The cottage still features in a number of international books on architecture and receives visitors from all over the world.

During a visit you can learn about the cottage, the stable block, the garden, the attached woods and the three generations of the same family that lived there. A very detailed “virtual tour” of the property is available for less mobile visitors.

Food Glorious...Odour?

It’s that time of year again when we shine a spotlight on “Food Glorious Food” and with some interesting features and temping places to eat-in, eat-out or entirely take-away from, we’ve got some great local providers standing by to tempt your taste-buds, but why is it that our taste-buds get “that Friday feeling” at the thought of roast dinners, freshly-baked bread or a slice of double-this, double-that cake that looks like it’s just come straight off the set of a M&S advert?

In matters of gastronomic importance many elements influence our appetites, from what items look like on our plate (and on others’ plates), their shape, to food temperature and texture and also past eating experiences but fundamentally smell, or aroma, is the number one trigger for our brains to start getting tingly. Try holding your nose for example whilst eating and drinking (perhaps at home first!) and you’ll find your food or drink loses its flavour, the same goes when you’re struck by a cold or flu, food at best becomes functional rather than flavoursome.

Dr. Alan Hirsh of the Chicago Taste Treatment & Research Foundation determined that “ninety percent of what is perceived as taste is actually smell”, not good news as we age as our sense of smell naturally deteriorates, almost imperceptibly, but the ramifications of this can actually be quite harmful if we don’t pay attention, as research has shown that people with an impaired ability to smell, and therefore taste, tend to follow less healthy diets.

So how can we help prolong our tasty appreciation of food? Here’s a few suggestions to help you along the way: 1) Drive safely: believe it or not a common cause of loss of smell (other than ageing) is car accidents and head trauma even small impacts can shift the brain within your skull, tearing delicate nerve fibres that connect your nose to your brain.

2) Go for a brisk, 10-minute walk or run before eating: our sense of smell is heightened after exercise. Researchers suspect it might be related to additional moisture in the nose which is why our sense of smell is also considered strongest in the spring and summer too (due to increased moisture in the air).

3) Drink a glass of water every hour or so: a dry mouth - whether due to medication or simply dehydration - can adversely affect your sense of taste.

4) Stir well and chew slowly: even before you start eating, stir your food, this has the effect of aerating the molecules in the food, thereby, releasing more of their scent; then chew slowly as this extends the time that food stays in your mouth and in contact with your taste buds.

5) Eat only when you are hungry: sounds obvious right, but how many of us pick at food even when we’re not hungry; our sense of smell (and thus taste) is strongest when we’re hungriest.

So, there you have it, “Food Glorious Food” and all the very best that our local eateries can offer might not be entirely dependent on us maintaining a good sense of smell, but it will certainly make the culinary experience a darn sight more tantalising on our odour-loving taste buds! Treat them well and they’ll return the favour for years to come.

Local boys do good in bringing The Horse back to prominence

The Horse Shepshed is a thriving yet traditionally built restaurant and bar, offering fabulous cocktails and live entertainment but also a newly launched alfresco pizzeria to boot. Set on the edge of The National Forest and the University Market Town of Loughborough, the site of The Horse Shepshed represents one of the oldest public houses in the vicinity and whilst it is easy to get to (located as it is just off junction 23 of the M1) The Horse Shepshed has followed its own journey to prominence, courtesy of current owners, Lee Joynes and Lloyd Roper’s acquisition, in 2014, of the then White Horse.

In 2015 The Horse Shephed briefly closed its doors before re-opening with a beautiful extension that almost doubled the venue’s original size.

Enjoy A Great Day Out In The Countryside Monday 29th August 2016 If you are looking for a great, family day out in the countryside, The Countryside Show is definitely the event for you.

Located at one of the county’s most iconic country parks, Beacon Hill, on Monday 29th August, the Countryside Show promises an action-packed Bank Holiday event, showcasing the best of what the Leicestershire countryside has to offer.

Thurcaston & Cropston Gardening Club - Summer Events Report This year our summer break from the meeting hall took us to Whatton Gardens in June and Renishaw Hall Gardens in July.

Whatton Gardens near Kegworth is a huge 15 acre Country House garden well-known for its many fine trees, shrubs and expansive lawns. The deep herbaceous border and traditional rose garden were not quite at their best having suffered from the inclement weather we had been experiencing, but we had chosen a sunny, albeit breezy, evening and the delicious home-made cakes and tea were a welcome end to an enjoyable visit.

Talking of inclement weather, our day trip to Renishaw Hall gardens, North Derbyshire in July could not have started in worse conditions. Lashing down with rain as we journeyed up the motorway and not an awful lot better when we reached the Hall, we feared the worst. Dashing from the coach to the delightfully extended and refurbished café, our mood improving after consulting the BBC weather app. promising a warm but overcast rain-free afternoon.

True to its promise the weather improved dramatically after 12 o’clock and it was time to discover why Renishaw had been voted “2015 Garden of the Year”.

The small but well-appointed museum was the first stop with its fascinating artefacts and small projection room showing a 20min. potted history of the Hall and gardens.

A brief history; the house was built in 1625 by George Sitwell (1601–67) the Sitwell fortune was made as colliery owners and ironmasters from the 17th to the 20th centuries, the vast formal gardens were added in the late 19th century.

Renishaw had two owners between 1862 and 1965, when Sir Osbert Sitwell gave the house to his nephew Sir Reresby Sitwell. He was the eldest son of Sir Sacheverell Sitwell brother of Edith and Osbert and owned the hall from 1965 until 2009 when he bequeathed it to his daughter, Alexandra Hayward. Edith was a poet and critic, the eldest and most famous of the literary Sitwells, her poetry was continuously published from 1913, some of it abstract and set to music.

With her dramatic style and exotic costumes, she was sometimes labelled a poseur, but her work was widely praised.

The Italianate garden was laid out by Sir George Sitwell (1860–1943) and has recently been restored to its former glory, it is considered to be a masterpiece of formal gardening. With only 3 full-time gardeners taking care of such a vast garden it would appear impossible for everything to look so neat and tidy, from the immaculately clipped yew hedges and shrubs, the organised borders and trimmed lawns all flanked by a superb array of mature trees. Then there’s the wooded hillside with its steep descending pathways leading down to the Gothick Archway, Old Sawmill and lakes. The trouble with steep descending pathways are steep ascending pathways on the way back, not a journey for the faint-hearted, phew.

Everything considered it turned out to be a most enjoyable day.

Our next meeting is at Thurcaston Memorial Hall on Wednesday August 10th, 7.45pm with an illustrated talk from Geoff Hodge entitled “Greenhouse Gardening” making the best use of our greenhouse through 12 months.

Then on the September 3rd we are holding our 33rd Annual Garden, Craft & Produce Show at the Richard Hill Primary School, schedules are now available from various outlets, look out for our posters giving full details or ring the Show Secretary on 0116 2359758 to obtain your copy. As we say every year, it’s not the severe competition many still believe it to be, it’s a fun day, so pluck up the courage if you have hesitated in the past and give it a go. Otherwise come along in the afternoon - 2.30pm - and witness the splendid efforts of our exhibitors.

Newtown Linford Gardening Club

We had a wonderful evening at our June meeting when David Chevell came to talk to us about bees. He has been keeping bees for most of his life and his twelve hives accommodate thousands of bees. He had slides to show and many stories to tell. We discovered that there are several types of bees and not all of them live in a hive or make honey. We also discovered they do not like things to be wet and that this winter was not good for them. His pièce de résistance was to reveal a demonstration hive where we could observe the queen bee (marked conveniently by him with a white spot) and all the workers busily doing what bees do.

Our activities in the Summer move out of the village hall. Our annual summer garden party is being held on July 19th at Mike and Liz Newcombe’s house and we are expecting a large gathering on this occasion. In August we visit Felley Priory in North Nottinghamshire where we will have a full coach load and the privilege of a private visit.

The opportunity to hear Fergus Garrett from Great Dixter is proving popular and almost all tickets have been sold.

Fergus does very few speaking engagements in any one year and we are very proud that he has chosen Newtown Linford as one of his venues this year.

We have welcomed a large number of new members this year and will be pleased if others want to join us. National Trust Gardens Consultant to help raise money for local charity’s “Schools into Gardening” programme National Trust Gardens Consultant, Simon Gulliver, will speak at The Leicestershire & Rutland Gardens Trust Annual Lecture on September 20th, 7.30pm at Leicester University. All proceeds from the lecture go to support local schools, through the Trust’s “Schools into Gardening programme”. Tickets are on sale now, to book call 0116 2705711.

Simon works with over 30 National Trust gardens across the Midlands, Lancashire and Cheshire on conservation, restoration, acquisitions and the day to day management of these significant historic landscapes. His talk is titled “Archives, potting sheds and databases: managing historic gardens in the 21st century”. It will include some of the processes and conservation dilemmas the National Trust faces, how they determine restoration works – or not, and how they balance visitor access, legislation and climate change whilst ensuring they act as good custodians. He will also share with us some of the projects they are working on in the Midlands.

Previously Simon worked for Birmingham Botanic Gardens for 10 years, the final few of which were as Plant Collections Manager and prior to this he worked for Plant Heritage, based at RHS Wisley responsible for the National Plant Collections.

The “Schools into Gardening” programme has been running for over five years and has enabled the trust to provide financial support to gardening projects in a number of local schools. This year the Trust has committed grants in excess of £1000, including work with Maplewell Hall Special Needs School, trips to Kelmarsh walled garden for inner city schools such as Charnwood, and a student award at Brooksby College. All profits from the talk will go to our “Schools into Gardening Project”.

The Leicestershire and Rutland Gardens Trust is a voluntary organisation and a registered charity. The Trust brings together people from all walks of life who are devoted to protecting our landscape, parks and gardens, giving their members the opportunity to learn more about garden heritage and how to protect it for future generations.

This summer Chorus Theatre is joining forces with The Century Theatre in Coalville to present an exciting drama project for young people. The project runs from Monday 15th to Friday 19th August. Working with professionals the participants will begin rehearsing a brand new production on the Monday morning ready for performance on the Friday evening!

The cost of this project is £75 per person. This works out as £15 per day and around £1.92 per hour! A bargain for a week of creativity and fun! We can also offer a reduced rate of £125 total for two siblings.

Love Loughborough have teamed up with Charnwood Borough Council to say thank you to loyal shoppers by offering Free Sunday Parking through July and August.

Love Loughborough, which operates on behalf of the town centre businesses, would like to thank loyal shoppers who shop local and support the town centre businesses by offering free car parking at all council owned car parks (excluding Browns Lane) through July and August. It is hoped that free parking will also encourage more visitors into the town on Sundays, which is fast becoming one of the busiest shopping days of the week across the country.

Love Loughborough and Charnwood Borough Council are also looking at alternative days in the week to offer free parking to support shops that don’t open on Sundays.

Lez Cope-Newman, Love Loughborough Vice-Chair, said: “This is to say thanks to all of the visitors and local residents that continue to support local traders by shopping in Loughborough. The free parking also offers an extra convenience to people that come along to one of the many events planned for the Summer.”

ART EXHIBITION: ‘Revealed – The Secret Wild’ Almost 50 artists are exhibiting at the Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust’s 60th Anniversary Art Exhibition at the Guildhall in October. It promises to be a very special event and a wonderful showcase both of local artistic talent and LRWT’s amazing reserves.

From oils to watercolours, mixed media to printmaking, ceramics to felted wool, a huge range of techniques and materials will interpret the wildlife, views, atmosphere and people found on Leicestershire and Rutland Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves in the two counties whilst celebrating 60 years of wildlife conservation.

The exhibition is open all week from Sunday 9th to Friday 14th October and will be housed in the wonderful Great Hall of the Guildhall, which dates from 1390. This Grade 1 listed building is a superb setting for this inspirational exhibition, drawing together art and wildlife in a thrilling combination.

Artwork will be for sale and 25% of sales will go to LRWT. There’s no admission charge to either the Guildhall or the exhibition.

Redgate Animal Sanctuary Redgate Annual Open Day & Dog Show Sunday 14th August, 10:30am - 3:30pm Redgate are holding their annual Dog Show and Open Day on Sunday 14th August! There will be lots to do, whether you are bringing a dog or not. They open for dog registrations at 10.30am and have three marvellous judges and an agility trainer signed up to run the competitions.

There will also be all the side shows and activities you would expect , Coconut Shy, giant Bouncy Castle, Slide and Trampolines, Carousel, Pony Rides, Test your Strength, Birds of Prey display, Candy Floss machine, AND the amazing Sambando Drummers who have to be heard to be believed. The fabulous Tunnel Micro-Brewery will also be setting up near the barbecue, selling their delicious artisan beers.

There will also be live music, hot and cold food, cupcakes and ice creams fresh from the van!

Redgate Farm Animal Sanctuary was founded in August 1986 at Shaw Lane, Markfield, Leicestershire.

In the beginning it was started out by a small number of caring people re-homing a few sick and injured Animals...this soon escalated dramatically into re-homing Horses, Sheep, Goats, Pigs, Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Ducks, Geese and even Owls.

All the Animals in the care of the Sanctuary need support, we have many cats, dogs and rabbits as well as some rodents who are all looking for their new forever homes. T CHARNWOOD MUSIC FOR ALL – ORGAN CONCER Those who fail to give these concerts a try really are missing out!! They are held each month at The Charnwood Arms, Bardon, and feature some of the country’s top keyboard and organ players. There are reasonably priced meals available beforehand, a bar in the function-room, a raffle and, often, CDs at bargain prices. Best of all, visitors are treated to two hours of top-class music of all kinds.

June’s visiting organist was Jean Martyn whose reputation in organ circles is second to none. In addition to her musical talents, Jean is a really nice person who kept her audience entertained, between tunes, with tales of her concerts at Buckingham and St. James’ Palaces. She told us of her appearance on ‘Britain’s Got Talent’ and what really happens behind the scenes; of her surprise meeting with James Last and the amazing influence he had on her career; and of her Christmas concerts for the Chelsea Pensioners. These stories were accompanied by almost magical music on both the piano (Jean is a renowned pianist and has two degrees in Music) and on the Yamaha ‘Tyros 5’ organ.

Whilst playing ‘The Robin’s Return’, Jean recalled how her piano teacher used to ‘rap her knuckles’ if she played a wrong note! Her experiences playing the Blackpool Tower Wurlitzer organ were relived as she treated us to ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses’, ‘I do like to be beside the Seaside’, Around the World in Eighty Days’ and ‘Hey Look Me Over’. She introduced bagpipes and accordians during a round of Scottish music (Scotland the Brave’ and ‘Donald where’s your Trousers’), and drums, piano, and cello whilst playing American Jazz (‘Sweet Georgia Brown).

Jean, resplendent in a sparkling union jack outfit, plus hat, was a joy to listen to. This was a lady whose charity concert had raised £5000 for ‘Help for Heroes’; who had mixed with royalty, and had the funny stories to prove it; who wrote ‘Having a Ball’, the theme tune for Sun Bingo’s on-line betting site, in a matter of minutes; and who was involved in eight weeks of filming in 2014. Having played many memorable pieces of music, Jean concluded with her own ‘mini proms’.

What an evening!

To mark the Centenary of Roald Dahl’s Birth, Leicestershire’s famous Wistow Maze has been designed in the shape of the wonderful ‘Big Friendly Giant’.

“Roald Dahl had such an impact on children’s imagination with his extraordinary stories and characters, so to celebrate we are highlighting both his work and that of other famous children’s authors” explains Diana Brooks, owner of Wistow Maze.

The maze features 3 miles of intricate pathways carved through 8 acres of living corn, with high level bridges and towers giving fabulous panoramic views.

The challenge is to find 12 quiz boards hidden in the giant maze. Each quiz board has a multiple choice question on a classic children’s book, which will help to unravel the answer to the quiz trail, whilst also providing interesting facts about the authors and their stories.

It includes an Activity Funyard with mini mazes and games for all ages, including hoopla, a space hopper track and football shooting game. Opposite is the Wistow Rural Centre with its cafe, garden centre, art gallery, model village and numerous shops, making it a great family day out.

The Wistow Maze is a winner of Leicestershire’s “Best Visitor Attraction” and attracts over 20,000 visitors each year.

At the end of each season, the maze is harvested for cattle fodder and then redesigned the following Spring using GPS satellite technology.

Whitwick and District U3A will hold its next monthly General Meeting on Friday 19th August. For retired people, or those approaching retirement, this is a chance to discover the opportunities for new learning experiences and friendships within a local, thriving organisation. The speaker at the August meeting will be Ian Rogerson with the topic “Smile Please, Say Cheese”. Ian, also known as The Cheese Man, is an experienced public speaker. We are promised an informative and entertaining talk on cheeses with samples to taste.

Shepshed ALLeY Group Shepshed ALLeY Group is a registered charity for young people aged 12 (Year 7) to 19 who have physical, mild learning or social interaction difficulties e.g. Cerebral Palsy, Dyspraxia, Dystonia, Spinal Injury, injury as a result of an accident, Aspergers Syndrome and other Autistic Spectrum Disorders. The group meets in Shepshed for two hours on Friday evenings throughout most of the year, with the occasional Saturday trip thrown in for good measure. The main aims of the group are to encourage friendship and confidence and to support the young people to develop social and life skills, helping them become more independent. But most importantly, the group is all about fun. We accept members from any locality.

Newbold Heritage Group A small group of local people are documenting the history of the village of Newbold Coleorton.

Whilst references to Newbold have been made in other historical texts relating to this area, there is no specific formal account of the significance of this village. Newbold Heritage Group are changing this.

The group meets at 7:30pm on the first Tuesday of most months at the Cross Keys pub, Worthington Lane, Newbold.

Local Clubs SWANNINGTON WI We are a small but very busy WI, meeting at 7.30pm on the first Monday of each month in Swannington Village Institute, Main Street, Swannington, LE67 8QL. In addition to the monthly meetings, we also enjoy lots of other activities - we have a book club, two walking groups - the Strollers and the Striders, a craft club and a theatre group. We also tend a small bee friendly garden in the centre of Swannington which we created for the community and having raised money to donate a bee hive, in order to help more people train as bee keepers, we are also able to enjoy eating honey produced by our own bees!

The Friends of Charnwood Forest Members of Friends of Charnwood Forest (FOCF) celebrated their 30th anniversary yesterday, June 26, with a Hog Roast at The Brand, Woodhouse Eaves, by kind permission of Colonel and Mrs Martin.

The sun shone, the gardens beckoned and the good food and wines were thoroughly enjoyed by all. The members chatted and old friends and new shared a wonderfully happy occasion.

The Chairman, Councillor Paul Day, welcomed the guests and thanked Colonel and Mrs Martin for their kindness in hosting the day.

Mrs Janie Martin, President, said how pleased they were to see so many members here again and went on to praise the work of the Committee and Officers, not only for today’s party but also for their many hours of hard work for the Society.

Peter Bertram, founder member and first Chairman, spoke of the origins of the Society, particularly mentioning Colonel Andrew Martin, Lord Lieutenant, and David Thorpe and their efforts in founding the Society. He mentioned past achievements and a steady plan for the future, based on our strong membership and sound finances. Finally he proposed a toast to Friends of Charnwood Forest and its future.
