October, 2012
DearFriends, Dear Friends,
Welcome to our annual Halloween – or better yet, HalloQUEEN issue! Indeed, October 31 is one of the gay high holy days for the LGBT community. The holiday offers the perfect opportunity for self expression, revelry and utter fabulousness. It was also safe harbor for our community when the world was a far less accepting place. There’s just something about the season with its autumnal chill, crystalline air and myriad colors that lends itself a perfect fit for our community to play. From the storied Central West End celebration to The Grove and epic house parties throughout the STL – we’ve been putting our unique stamp on Halloween for generations. This issue boasts a spectacular array features to celebrate the season. We’re delighted to showcase Elvira, Mistress of the Dark on this month’s cover as staff writer Matt Jamieson chats it up with the Queer Icon. Also check out my “1 Out of 10” column on Halloween 1969. It was but a few months after The Stonewall Riots in New York when a group of St. Louis drag queens were arrested for masquerading and kick started the LGBT Rights movement here in St. Louis. Alex Galindo is back with another incredible Spread and our own Dieta Pepsi breaks down the steps to painting a face. Given the number of queens that are born each Oct. 31 – this is a must read! In closing, we’re thrilled to announce that V2 2013 will be held on Jan. 19th at Lumen. Stay tuned for details – another showstopper is in the works. In Pride,
Colin Murphy, Executive Editor

Halloween 1969: St. Louis’ Stonewall
Written by Colin Murphy – Editor Photography by Darin Slyman & St. Louis LGBT History Project Greg Smith can count on two fingers the number of times he’s dressed in drag. The first proved a fateful debut as he ventured out with friends on October 31, 1969 to hit the strip of gay bars along Olive at Grand. The night would end with the arrest of Smith and eight others under St. Louis’ then Masquerading Law and become a rallying cry within the community to organize for LGBT equality. Known as “St. Louis’ Stonewall” – the Halloween 1969 arrests were a common occurrence for LGBT establishments in the 1950s and 1960s. For in addition to it being illegal for persons of the same sex to dance together or engage in public displays of affection, the law prohibiting dressing in drag or “masquerading” would remain on the books until St. Louis entertainer Michelle McCausland and a local transwoman successfully challenged the city statute in 1986. “We were coming out of The Onyx Room and going over to The Golden Gate and they [the police] just grabbed us,” recalls Smith, who owns Coiffures by Shawn in the CWE. “They didn’t even say why – boom – just put us in the paddy wagon and down to the police station on Clark Street. Smith was aware you could be arrested for dressing in drag – but was assured by friends that they’d be fine, especially on Halloween. “I was going out with people who had already done this a lot – and what I was told that night was as long you had on men’s underwear they could not arrest you,” he explains. “That was supposedly the way to get away with it. But the cops didn’t care. And we couldn’t use Halloween as an excuse because we were arrested one minute after midnight on Nov. 1.”

“It was Halloween and I mean I looked just like a hooker,” Smith continues. “That’s what it reminded us of when they got us – we were all in the back of the paddy wagon and it didn’t scare me at all. I was just really playing it up – even at the police station.” The nine men were taken to the downtown police station where they were processed, fingerprinted and had mug shots taken. Meanwhile – the fledgling Mandrake Society – a group of LGBT and allied activists who had started to organize in April 1969 heard the news and immediately activated their phone tree to collect bail and secure an attorney. Within hours the foyer of Central Station was filling with angry supporters. “I didn’t know that a group of people had got an attorney to come down and get us out because I had called my parents,” says Smith. “These people [the police] were starting to get serious with us. We’re in there 12 | October, 2012
singing Let us—Entertain You… and these prisoners have got their tin cans and are banging them and this guard comes in and growls, “I’m gonna tell you right now – if you don’t shut up I’m gonna knock the hell out of you.” And that’s when I said to my friend, “I think they’re serious about this.” Smith, who was 20 at the time, was the first to be bailed out. His parents made the drive from Webster Groves and had to put up their house to secure bail. “They’re doing all of the final processing to get me out and one of the officer’s says, “you’ll want to take that wig off and wipe that shit off your face,” Smith recalls. “I said, “I will not – I’ll go out the way I came in!” So I got this brush out and teased up that wig and put on some more lipstick and put on my mother’s diamond earrings. Then they threw open this door—and there she was.”
His parents were not amused and rushed him into the car outside. Smith had come out to his parents earlier, for the most part, but admits – it was a long next few days. A few months later the nine men were reunited when the Mandrake appointed attorney represented them in court. “Our lawyer was really good,” Smith offers. “You know the V.P. Fair Parade in those days – the rich guys dressed up like women on all the floats. And so when our lawyer went in front of the judge he said, “I’ll
have every Santa Claus in the city and every man on that float thrown in jail for masquerading.” And the judge threw it out!” Smith is honored to have played a small part in St. Louis LGBT History. The arrests proved the catalyst for The Mandrake Society stepping up to become the first LGBT equality organization in St. Louis. Their focus, while short lived, was the decriminalization of homosexuality and the legendary “Mandrake Ball” Halloween costume galas proved a hot ticket through 1974. v

Lisa Lampanelli: It’s All About Me (And the Gays) Written by Colin Murphy – Editor Photography by Shearer PR Lisa Lampanelli – “The Loveable Queen of Mean” storms the stage of The Pageant in The Loop on Friday, Oct. 19. The “equal opportunity offender” enjoys a loyal LGBT following and is a cross between Don Rickles, Archie Bunker and a vial of estrogen. Vital VOICE recently caught up with the comedienne to talk about her unique brand of humor, her gay following and more. For more info check out www.thepageant.com. Colin Murphy: So I understand you’re just coming off vacation? Lisa Lampanelli: Yes – I was out for six weeks at my new house on the beach because I’m a fabulously wealthy celebrity! So if you had a reality television crew following you around – what would we see? What’s Lisa Lampanelli like when she has some time off? Oh my God. They would see me being mean to my neighbors because they don’t keep their houses as nice as I keep mine – and God damn it, we’re in Connecticut, get a grip. You’d also see me getting into fights with people at Bed Bath and Beyond, Home Depot – including telling one of my contractors to go fu*k their mother. I was interested to learn that you came from a journalism background. Did your interviewing people—telling peoples stories—did that help shape your comedy at all? Well, the only thing it helped me do is learn how to talk to reporters and promote myself. Pretty much I don’t care about anybody else’s story because it’s all about me. So basically it was me learning how to nod and pretend that I understood and cared what other people were saying about themselves. Obviously you get a lot of comparisons to Don Rickles. But Don was doing it during a time when we had a much more free sense of humor. We’re living in such a politically correct time now – how were you able to pull off this biting, cutting edge comedy that you’re doing in 2012? Well, without sounding conceited – because I totally am – I feel like I’m lucky that I have a personality that people know I’m just joking around and people understand that it’s just comedy. So I think if you have some kind of a warm personality, people will buy in and go, “oh – she’s just kidding.” Luckily it works for me. One of your most loyal fan bases in the gay community. Why do you think gay men, in particular, “get you” the way that they do? I think the more people have gone through struggles in their life, the more they can understand and take a joke. But really – every minority group that comes to the show seems to have a healthier sense of humor than the white straighties. So you know – gay men have gone through a lot and struggled with their identity
and they also sense that I’ve had some struggles with jerks being comfortable with who I am because of weight issues and issues with men and stuff like that. So I think they just go, “wow – she’s kind of like us.” Either that or you fags just like mean bitches – I can’t figure it out. It’s a little bit of both – it really is. It’s a fine line. Could you talk about your connection to the LGBT community? Obviously it’s been going on for a long time. I’ve always had gay friends all my life. When they asked me to do The Celebrity Apprentice, I decided to donate the pay to The Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC) because I had donated money to them when the Westboro Baptist Church picketed me. So I’ve always had a connection, charity wise, to the gay community but I’ve always sort of identified with the gays in my crowd. So yeah, I’ve been pretty lucky that there’s a group that I really believe in and their struggle and want to help them – and then they’ve kind of in turn helped me with my career and support my show. I thought it was brilliant that you donated $1K to GMHC for each of the Westboro protesters that showed up. Yeah – I love that. It’s like, really? You’re gonna show me? Well let’s figure out how to help people with a disease you say comes from God. So F.U. Fred Phelps! But they’re some thick headed S.O.B.’s – a bitch could go broke if you had to keep this up on a regular basis. Oh yeah – that’s why I figured I’d do it on The Apprentice and let [Donald] Trump donate. It’s like, OK—I’ve given enough of my money to you dirty homos—let Trump take over! Oh yeah – trick him. He’s a real supporter of ours. It’s funny because he had no choice to support what I planned. I got $130K just for you guys. So do you think on some level that people secretly enjoy being insulted? Yes, yes – they definitely do. Because when I go on stage people always come up to me after shows and they thank me for insulting them. They also get mad when I don’t insult them enough. So I chalk that up to either they have really high self esteem or really low self esteem – but either way, it doesn’t matter, because I get paid. Last question – did you watch any of the political conventions? Oh –no, no, no. I couldn’t care less – because again, it has nothing to do with me. So I basically just watched the reruns of all my shows because I don’t care about anyone else. But I did hear Clint Eastwood was FANTASTIC. v

Political VOICE Survival of the Fittest Written by A.J. Bockelman Photography by DNC.org
W
e all want to be successful, right? It is the norm, the standard that is drilled into each one of us growing up in America. This is a country built on that drive for success. Some would argue that the crusade for equality and justice, essential tenets of the U.S. Constitution, are what justify the idea of American exceptionalism – the notion that America has a unique place in the world to bring about democracy and freedom. I’m starting this month’s column off with this framework of what many believe this country stands for. As citizens, next month we have a choice to make. That choice is critical to what makes our whole political process – however messed up we may think it is – work. On November 6th, we go to the polls to elect the President of the United States. When looking at our two choices, keep that initial framework in mind. Which candidate do you believe offers the most realistic view of America and is willing to create the America we want to live in? Forgive me for saying this, but I understand the appeal of Mitt Romney. It is as if his story, woven as it is, is ripped from the pages of an American success story. Smart, good-looking, prosperous. Come on, who wouldn’t want to vote for this guy, right? Look deeper though. The Republican campaign for President has been hijacked by the far right and by corporate interests. 18 | October, 2012
Romney epitomizes everything we don’t want in a leader – he changes his positions frequently; he perpetuates half-truths and bald-faced lies; he holds up his experience as a corporate raider as the reason why he should be crowned prince of the U.S. The Republican National Convention, held at the end of August, was astonishing in its audacity. So many of the speeches tried to paint a picture of the rags to riches stories – you know, the American Dream. The words from the stage echoed a hollow call for equality for all; yet the platform they approved held no promise of exceptionalism for the LGBT community, not to mention women, poor people, and persons of color. Their platform, vetted, approved, and cheered by the likes of Phyllis Schlafly and Tony Perkins, if enacted, will only work to consolidate power for those who already have it and would actively and willfully obstruct those of us in the LGBT community from ever achieving the American Dream. Contrast this with our current President, Barack Obama. Yes, in his first two years in office, he got off to a rocky start with the LGBT community. There were many promises but slow movement. However, now we can look back and tick off several items – Hate Crimes passed, DADT repealed, and a host of Federal level policy changes such as hospital visitation and a refusal to defend DOMA by the Department of Justice.
Earlier I criticized Governor Romney because “he changes his positions frequently.” And some have criticized President Obama for his “evolving” view of marriage equality. You may well ask, what makes Obama any better than Romney? Two things: direction and sincerity. In 1994, Romney ran for Senate in Massachusetts. At that time, he said, “If we are to achieve the goals we share, we must make equality for gays and lesbians a mainstream concern.” When he was governor of Massachusetts in 2003, the state’s highest court ruled that same sex marriage could not be barred under the Massachusetts constitution. He initially said that he would abide by the decision, but then as he set his sights on higher office, he backed a state constitutional amendment to bar same sex marriage. Today, he favors a US Constitutional Amendment limiting marriage to one man and one woman, and he even opposes civil unions for same sex couples. On the other hand, Obama was a supporter of same sex marriage back in 1996. By 2004 his public views changed to supporting civil unions and employment protections but not marriage. He stated quite plainly that his hesitation to endorse same-sex marriage was strategic and political. Since then he has talked about how his views have “evolved,” till that historic day in May 2012 when
HOME SWEET HOME...
for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Older Adults
he told Robin Roberts of ABC News, “At a certain point, I’ve just concluded that for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married.” I mentioned sincerity and direction. You might say, “Look, Obama, said out loud that he did not support marriage because it was not good for him from a ‘strategic and political’ standpoint. How am I supposed to trust him?!” I would say precisely because he did say this out loud. Obama gave us a view of what drives him that Romney is simply incapable of, and frankly is probably unaware of. Romney says he does things out of personal and religious convictions, yet I have no idea what his personal and political convictions are. Was it 1994, 2003, or 2012? Romney only seems to know what he feels when he sticks his finger up and feels which way the wind is blowing. Obama, on the other hand, is quite frank about what he needed to do to survive and who among us who identifies as L,G,B, or T does not know what that is like?
To be a politician at a national level espousing “gay marriage” a decade ago would have been political suicide. Obama, on this issue, has been going through his own “coming out” process. Again, each and every one of us knows how tough that is and how long that can take. But President Obama has arrived, and we should welcome him into our community. So when it comes to sincerity, Obama wins hands down. As for the direction of their changes in views, is there really any question about who is on our side? Like you, I want to believe in and live in a world where we see ourselves reflected in our leaders. The difference in how we are reflected in these two candidates is stark. When I look at Mitt Romney, I see the person that I, as an American, am supposed to be – rich, ruthless, willing to do anything for maximum profit. When I look at Barack Obama, I see the person that I truly want to be – struggling with myself and my past to make America truly exceptional through equality, fairness, and justice. v

5?s’ with... Josh Gould
Written by Jennifer Potter Photography by Darin Slyman At the young age of 21, Josh Gould of Elco Chevrolet Cadillac has already made his mark as the “Prince of the Car Industry”. We met up with Josh to find out what he attributes most to his success and why he feels it is important to share this success with the LGBT community. Tell us about Elco Chevrolet Cadillac? We have been in business over 25 years! We carry a great sense of pride in every aspect of our business. We have just recently won Cadillac dealer of the year. It was a huge stepping stone for us. Although we have become one of the top performing dealers in the mid-west, we still pride ourselves on the personal relationship that we build with each one of our guests. We still send out handwritten thank you cards and everything. Our business as whole believes that if you do business the right way your guest will continue to come back. Needless to say it has served us well so far! What do you attribute most to your success at such a young age? My dad was one of the original “kings” of the car business, He taught me everything that I know so far, and continues to teach me and help me with deals whenever I need him. He always gave me a great sense of encouragement to strive for the best. That is where my work ethic comes in – I settle for nothing but the best things in life. I believe if you work hard, then you should expect nothing less. I also owe a great deal to my grandmother Lois and my mother Susan. These two women are incredible people that have always told me I was going to be successful at whatever I choose in life. So far it’s worked out pretty well! What’s your involvement within the LGBT Community? I am very proud to say that I am starting The Gould Foundation. We will be providing temporary housing for the LGBT community that is displaced due to family circumstances, whether it be domestic violence or parents that disowned their gay or lesbian child. I have been given so much in my life, and I felt like it was time to start giving back. Are there any obstacles and/or advantages for being a gay man in a predominately straight industry? For the most part people don’t pick up on it. I am out, and am very proud of who I am. There is more than one way to be gay. It’s cut throat and it takes a special kind of person to do what I do, but I love it. I get paid to talk and play with cars. My dream since I was a little boy! How would you describe your perfect match? Someone who would enjoy anything from dinner at the club to a quiet evening at home with Jimmy Johns. I typically like the well groomed, professional, in-shape type with maybe a 5 o’clock shadow. Relationships are no different than any other aspects of my life. I expect the best out of people – If you’re going to do something, give it 100%. I’m a sucker for a great smile and a warm heart. It is important that someone who can laugh at the small stuff and appreciate each day no matter what it brings. theVitalVOICE.com | 21

No Show Knows Music
The Saturdays Uk’s hottest girl band is coming to America! Written by Jimmy No Show Photography by The Saturdays
T
hings are about to get REAL for The UK’s hottest girl-group, The Saturdays. The pop quintet has just signed a deal with reality entertainment network E! to document the bands attempt to crack the American market – a feat not accomplished by a girl band since the Spice Girls in the late 1990’s. With the likes of UK pop bands One Direction and The Wanted breaking into the American charts, it may not be a total uphill battle for The Sats, who are practically pop veterans compared to the greener boy bands from across the pond. Breaking onto the UK music scene in 2008, The Saturdays’ debut “If This is Love” drew on a sample of the 80’s dance hit Situation by Yazoo for a killer hook. Their album Chasing Lights followed, and spun four more hits: Up, Issues, Work and more 80’s inspiration with a cover of Depeche Mode’s “Just Can’t Get Enough”. Their first full-fledged live show took place at London’s famous G-A-Y Nightclub. The Sun reporter Larry Meyler noted, “If this live show and the crowd’s raucous reaction was anything to go by, the feisty fivesome are taking a first class ride on the pop train to super stardom with no looking back.” Instead of a train the band got a tour bus; the girls’ first headlining tour titled Work followed. Werk! Sophomore album Wordshaker hit shops in 2009 with “Forever Is Over”, the first single, as a testament to just how powerful the band was becoming. The likes of Kelly Clarkson and P!nk, also of considerable gay fandom, had also recorded the break-up power ballad and were fighting to release the track. The Saturdays ultimately won the battle, performing at G-A-Y for a second time, the day before the song’s release, where it landed just shy of the number one spot.
Follow up single “Ego” was the first time The Saturdays appeared on any international radar (I can remember DJ Josh Waters playing the video back in 2009, and being so excited to see the girls finally getting the attention they deserve.). The undeniable “check-yourself” anthem featured a sexy but camp video of the band dressed as glamazon super heroes that borderlined on drag. The clip drew attention from DJs outside of the UK for the first time – going into rotation in gay bars and clubs around the world. Fond of this new attention, and keen to keeping the ball rolling in the right direction, the band rush-released 8-track EP Headlines in 2010 with a decidedly different and dancier direction. Leading off with raver-ballad “Missing You” - I caught DJ Danny Morris still spinning the track just a few months ago during a guest spot at Just John – the song truly ignores musical trends and stands on it’s own as a timeless dance track with a love/hate theme. Higher, a pure-pop tune featuring Flo Rida followed, along with their Headlines! Tour. The tour was documented in their first reality series, shown only in the UK, titled What Goes on Tour.

2011 brought the Sat’s third full-length album. The edgier and even dancier On Your Radar is a hand-to-God must own album for any fan of dance-pop music – a solid offering through and through. The single “All Fired Up” found the girls once again with the attention of DJs across the world. The song was produced by Xenomania, an out-side-the-box music production team known for making unexpectedly unique and remarkable hits for the likes of Britney Spears, Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Mingoue and most famously Cher’s megahit “Believe”. While the song never quite got to the level of Cher, the girls found yet another song had gotten the attention of bosses at E! all the way in Hollywood. After their “All Fired Up” concert tour wrapped, The Sats found themselves in sunny California shooting a pilot for a new reality series (as well as an Out 4 Marriage equality video!). E! picked up the show, and the girls were transplanted to Los Angeles to begin shooting the series, highlighting the recording of their new album, as well as their attempt to break America. The deal caught the attention of celebrity blogger, and fellow ‘family member’ Perez Hilton, who tapped the girls to appear at his after party following MTV’s Video Music Awards this September, where the girls were invited guests. The Saturdays announced at the awards ceremony their first American released single “What About Us” would be out in January of 2013. Until then, you’ll have to let their back catalogue hold you over, and you can be the judge for yourself. (DJ Jimmy No Show is resident DJ of Musical Monday’s at Meyer’s Grove as well as a favorite guest DJ at Just John’s Nightclub.) v

ElVIRA How the Sassy Lassy’s Kept it Classy Written by Matt Jamieson – Staff Writer Photography by Austin Young & Kevin Scanlon
Y
ou can’t deny that Elvira’s still got it going on. With a career spanning 30+ years, the kooky, spooky gal has managed to stay relevant as a horror icon and sex symbol with two feature films, host of Movie Macabre, live appearances, and much more. I spoke with Cassandra Peterson - the woman behind the wig and wit about her career, her LGBT fans and her connection to the king of rock n’ roll. You have a fantastic career - what’s it like to have done this so long and how do you keep it fresh? I’m always doing different projects, it’s not like I’m going in to do the same television show every week. One week I’ll be working on a book project, the next a TV or video thing, music and hosting live events. I’m always doing different things, even though it’s always Elvira, it’s always something different. That keeps it fresh for me - changing it up all the time. I don’t really get tired of it. Have you always had a quick, acerbic wit, or did that come with the character of Elvira? I was always pretty wacky, but I think it developed over the years. Hanging with queens, we were all pretty snarky. I started go-go dancing in a drag club when I was 14 or 15, so I was around a lot of drag queens and a lot of my sense of humor came from them. I was later in Groundlings - but it all started with being a drag queen-in-training. As Elvira, you have a very strong LGBT fanbase. What do you think of your LGBT fans? I don’t know what I would do without them. They’re one of the strongest of my fans. I grew up around gay men and everything I’ve ever done in my career was helped and supported by gay men in particular. My whole life has been ‘the gays, the gays, the gays’ and they love me and I love them. I’m very into the whole community - a lot of my friends died of AIDS in the ‘80s. So I’ve been very involved in helping AIDS charities over the years. My boyfriend and I have been fans of you for years. We were ecstatic to see you on RuPaul’s
Drag Race as a guest judge. How did you meet Ru? Because I remember when you were on Hollywood Squares in 2002 with Ru for Halloween week. I met Ru somewhere before that, at different parties and things in Hollywood. But we sort of connected when Hollywood Squares happened. It was so funny, here I’m sitting between Tammy Faye Baker and RuPaul, it was so bizarre. We’ve been friends for years and always wanted to do something together. So I was so happy when he asked me to judge the show. He’s a big Elvira fan, he’s so funny, he can quote every single line from Mistress of the Dark. I adore him, I had a blast on that show, I wish I was a full-time judge - I love drag queens, I love judging, I love judging people. So I gotta ask, what’s your beef with Showgirls? Ohmygod! I cannot believe everyone says that. I have no beef with it, I LOVE Showgirls - I’ve seen it a bazillion times. I brought that up [on Drag Race] as an example of a really bad film and had no idea I’d be attacked. What’s your proudest moment to date? The highlight of my career was making Mistress of the Dark, which, like Showgirls in its own sick way, has kind of become a classic. I’m extremely proud of that movie - that I wrote it and put it together. I’m proud of my own movie, Haunted Hills, even though it’s not up to par with Mistress of the Dark. I produced it, wrote it, everything. It’s a pretty big achievement. I feel that if I could do that, I could anything. Anyone who’s made an independent film deserves some kind of a freaking medal! One of the things I’m most proud of with Haunted Hills is the way we released it - taking it around the United States to all major cities and doing events for the opening of the film, where all the money went to AIDS charities. With Halloween a few weeks away, how busy are you in October? It is insane, we hold off on bookings until August, so we can cherry-pick the best ones, then we start booking them back to back as close as we can. Last

October, I had to be in Monterrey, Mexico, then Toronto, Canada, Kansas City, then Halifax, Nova Scotia, New York City. We were booking everything two days in between. October is beyond insane for me, I try to cram in a year’s worth of work into a month. Who has been the most influential person you’ve met in your career? Well, I hate to be a name-dropper but it’s probably Elvis. He’s the one who told me to get the hell out of there and pursue a career in singing, which didn’t really work out so good for me. But it did get me out of Vegas. I was the youngest showgirl in Vegas history and if it hadn’t have been for Elvis, I would now be the oldest showgirl in Vegas.
What’s it like to be a continuing sex symbol? It’s really weird. It’s so bizarre, but it sort of keeps going on. But it feels great - I’m happy that so many people fantasize about me. Some wanna be, some wanna do me. It’s thrilling to be my age and still be that sexy. Do you ever think about retiring? Well I think about retiring almost every day. But [I don’t] for many reasons, I love the fans - maybe I need the adoration - but I love my fans. I love to perform, I love to be goofy and I could use the money. Who knows when I’ll retire? I don’t know. Somebody please send me a letter and let me know when it gets pathetic, so I can immediately stop!

t. Louis has its share of “haunts” and The Lemp Mansion is no exception. It’s one of the top 10 spookiest places in the world! The STL is also home to some nationally recognized haunted houses. What’s more – the classic film, The Exorcist was based on a true story right here in River City. Indeed - we live in a city that is creepy and full of haunts and history and perfect for the month of October. Halloween is a time you can dress in outfits you would never be able to pull off the rest of the year. But drag queens have the ability to dress up and
look fabulous year round! If anyone knows how to put an outfit together with the words, Addams Family Couture, they do! So for this month’s SPREAD, we decided to take some of the bewitchingly alluring drags of St. Louis, kill them up, and throw them on the grounds of the haunted Lemp Mansion. If you look closely, you just might spot an orb or one of the Lemp family members walking in the background. No matter how closely you look, make sure you’re on guard and always keeping one eye behind you. You never know who’s lurking!

A New Les Miz! Written by Colin Murphy – Editor Photography by Deen van Meer
T
he 25th Anniversary Production of Les Misérables marches into town to captivate audiences at the Fabulous Fox Theatre, Oct. 16-28. The all new production features glorious new staging and spectacular reimagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo. “It’s a Les Miz theatre goers have never seen before,” says Jason Forbach, who plays the charismatic student leader, Énjolras. “It’s much more flushed out, it’s much more cinematic. It’s beautiful.” The New York Times calls this Les Misérables “an unquestionably spectacular production from start to finish.” Productions have played in 43 countries and over 300 cities and the smash musical has won over 70 major theatre awards including an Olivier, Tony & Grammy. “It’s so relevant and the music seems to be connecting with people now more than ever,” explains Forbach, who attended University of Missouri-Columbia, his family’s alma mater, on a music scholarship where he majored in Vocal Performance. “I see audience members that are young—very young, who know every word. I think that’s the power of Les Miz – the story of redemption is something everyone can relate to.” “As a community, everyone is realizing that there is a power to your voice and how important it is
to stand up for what you believe in,” the out actor continues. “In this story you see people do that – they die for what they believe in. I think as a community, there’s so much power in our voice and so much power in our influence and I think it contributes to greater change in the long run… The show speaks to that.” Based on Victor Hugo’s classic novel, Les Misérables is an epic and uplifting story about the survival of the human spirit. The revolutionary tale boasts a powerful score, including the classic songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Stars,” “Bring Him Home,” “Do You Hear the People Sing?,” “One Day More,” “Empty Chairs at Empty Tables,” “Master Of The House” and many more. Forbach continued his musical training and was accepted at the prestigious New England Conservatory in Boston, MA. He was named the Frelinghuysen Grant Recipient and completed his Masters Degree in Vocal Performance. He looks forward to performing in St. Louis and reuniting with friends and family. “My mother is from St. Louis and I’ve spent a lot of time there and of course I went to school a few hours away,” he explains. “I’m just really happy and my Mom’s already planning a big cast meal and snatching up hundreds of tickets for all of the relatives – so it should be a really cool homecoming.”

Forbach‘s list of credits continues to grow having recently appeared in The Phantom of the Opera. On the concert stage, he made his Carnegie Hall debut in A Prince of a Fella: A Tribute to Hal Prince with the New York Festival of Song and has made appearances with the Las Vegas and Abilene Philharmonic. On the Operatic stage, Forbach has sung with Boston Lyric Opera, Opera Boston, Central City Opera and was a Metropolitan Opera National Council Semi-Finalist. Off-Broadway credits include The Music Teacher, A.W.O.L. and As You Like It. Regional appearances have included Into The Woods, A Christmas Carol and Les Misérables. recently, his debut solo recording A New Leading Man and holiday EP Remembering To Dream. “I adamantly believe that you can have a brilliant education in the middle of Missouri as you can in New York or Boston,” says Forbach. “I think any experience is what you make of it. I think to those who dream big but they are in the Midwest – just be bold and daring… there’s possibility everywhere – it’s just a matter of seeing it and taking advantage of it.” For ticket and further info on Les Miz check out www.fabulousfox.com. LezTalk, More Action! Written by Jenny Potter
M
y name is Jenny Potter and I was born without a filter. I speak my mind, I don’t beat around the bush (every pun intended), and do not for any reason, try to pretend to be someone I am not. I have learned along the way that before blaming anyone else, I first need to blame myself for any negative drama in my life. I will hold myself accountable before holding anyone else. There is nothing I would say behind your back that I wouldn’t say to your face. Ever since I can remember I have had a burning desire to, in some way, follow in my grandmother’s footsteps. My grandmother, Jessie Potter, received her doctorate from Northwestern University in human sexuality at an age when most people are considered elderly. For decades on the lecture circuit, my grandmother spoke about things no one, but she, had the nerve to talk about. She appeared several times on the Phil Donhue and Sally Jessy talk shows. She spoke to the audience about the importance of the clitoris – having the means as women to satisfy their own sexual tension, and the importance of “Non-Sexual” touch.
44 | October, 2012
At a young age I knew I had a very unique and special grandmother and not because she was a sexuality therapist or because she placed Penthouse magazines next to our toys at her house. There was something bigger than I could have imagined about her. It wasn’t, unfortunately, until her death that I discovered what set her apart from everyone else I had known. Short stories were left to us grandchildren by people who wanted to share the impact that my grandmother had on their lives. There were stories about how she helped gay fathers become comfortable and confident with their own sexuality - enough to come out to their children in the 1970s. There were great women’s stories who attributed their eventual feminism 30 years ago to a lecture my grandmother gave to a group of conservative North Shore women (let’s just say she didn’t tell them to go shopping). Women – who after 50 years can look at themselves naked with scars and other life marks and feel love and pride in what they see. The one “Jessie-ism” that seemed to repeat itself amongst the diverse stories was that my grandmother will always be with them, especially when they warm their children’s towels while they take a bath so they can wrap them in love as they come dripping out of the tub.
Unlike my Grams, I in no way have any educational background to counsel anyone (I received my Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science from Webster University) – but what I do have is life experience. A friend of mine said to me, “I don’t believe you have enough experience to write a lesbian column – you have only had two girlfriends.” With a slight grin on my face I confidently replied, “Well old friend, you know my two ex-girlfriends and so does almost everyone else, I HAVE PLENTY OF EXPERIENCE”! I can openly (and with a little of sense of humor) admit I have probably made every wrong decision and bad mistake possible up to this point in my life. My greatest hope for writing this column is to share my own personal experience; my mistakes, heartbreaks, lies, betrayal and at some point the forgiveness of oneself and others in order to help shed the honest reality of the consequences our choices create. I hope everyone is as excited as I am about a little “LezTalk” in Vital VOICE. v

Halloween in The Grove Written by Denny Patterson
Halloween, also known as All Hallows’ Eve, is the yearly holiday observed around the world held on October 31. It’s the day where we initially incorporate traditions from pagan harvest festivals and honoring the dead. Activities typically include children trick-or-treating, attending costume parties, carving jack-o’-lanterns, lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, visiting haunted attractions, playing pranks, telling ghost tales and watching horror films. But what if you’re not into any of that and all you want to do is go out on the town with some friends? Where would be the best place to go? How about hitting up The Grove - the home to premier nightlife and is a thriving center for the LGBT community.

6steps to Painting a Face
Ever been sitting at home watching the Housewives, Glee, or the Cardinals and wonder how many steps it would take your change from Glen to Glenda? Well here are six basic steps to change your gender facially, without the aid of surgery or hormones. (That is another process we will discuss later.)
Written by Dieta Pepsi & Matt Jamieson Photography by Darin Slyman
1 - Shave and Face Cleansing Just like Picasso, Van Gogh or Sherman Williams you need a good clean smooth canvass to start the painting process. Make sure to get a good close shave and that there are no missed spots. Take your time. Your face needs to be as smooth as a twink’s bottom. Also - wash your face with a good astringent or good ole soap and water to remove any dirt, grime or product that may have built up over the day. 2 – Base and Powder Drag Commandment #1 - “Cover Girl does not cover boy”. Base is the one key element that you need to go from duke to duchess. Always, always, always use Pan Stick. Most showgirls use Max Factor. The thick, creamy texture of stick foundation makes the complexion perfectly even and camouflages life’s “small imperfections” and that pesky five o’clock shadow. Max Factor comes in various shades. Trust me; they have a shade that matches your skin tone. MATCH THE BASE TO YOUR SKIN TONE! Let me repeat: MATCH THE BASE TO YOUR SKIN TONE! As for powder - a nice loose powder works wonders. Some girls use a translucent; some use a powder that matches their base color. MATCH THE POWDER TO YOUR SKIN TONE! Also use a pink or white highlighting powder under your eyes and on your checks to catch the falling eyeshadow when doing your eyes. But make sure you dust the remainder off before hitting the stage or traipsing about town. 3 – Eyes and Lashes This is where you can go ballistic with color, 52 | October, 2012
style and creativity. There are no specific rules here. You can use powder or cream eyeshadows, use all black (which is called smokeout) or overdose on colors, and even add sequins and rhinestones. It’s all up to you and how you want to express yourself that day. Or you can just put a little black in the corners, line your eyes and hit it. Again it’s your individual expression. Fake eyelashes are the same way. You can wear a training lash (No. 38) or a tarantula (No. 399). They can have feathers and rhinestones. It depends on how big and deep set your eyes are on the size lash you wear. Some girls apply their lashes with weave bonding glue or dark tone waterproof Duo. No matter what size lash you choose, line the top of the lash, the bottom part that is on your eyelid with liquid waterproof eyeliner. 4 – Contour and Cheeks Now pucker like a fish and smile at the same time. This will make your cheekbones stand out and underneath the cheekbone is where the contour goes. Using a dark brown eyeshadow start at the front of the cheek and continue under the cheekbone until you get to the temple. This is called the “Nike Swoop” - blend this contour upward into your cheekbone. If you are full figured and flawless, you might want to contour under your chins and jaw line to hide some of them. This will give us big girls an appearance of a single chin and a jaw line. Make the smiley fish face again. This time put the blush on your cheeks or “apples” and continues it up towards your temple as well. Don’t overdo it; you don’t want to look like you got punched in the face.
5 – Lips Some girls like a nude lip, some girls like a bright lip. I prefer a bright lip color because it looks good on stage or from across a crowded bar. Choose a lip shade that is complimentary to your eye and cheek pallet. Start by lining your lips with a lip pencil the same shade as your lip color. Never use a black or dark brown lip pencil. Take a lip brush and your lip color and color your lips. Be careful and stay within the lines just like when you color in a coloring book. Now apply a gloss that is the same shade as your lip color. Shine up your lips, honey, like the glaze on a donut. MAC Glass is the best lip gloss ever made. 6 – Final Steps and Wig Once you have yourself looking fabulous and fishy apply another coat of powder, fresh powder, and dust the highlighting powder from under your eyes. Look at yourself in the mirror and make any necessary touch ups. If you are satisfied by what you see, it’s wig time! Again here is a place you can go crazy. Pick any style, length, texture or color. It’s all an expression of how you feel. I hope these simple steps help you become the woman inside of you. Granted, these by no means are the only steps, just some basic ones to take your from Chico to chica. Some girls have a more elaborate transformation processes. So go buy some make up and paint up!!!
