publisher’s Letter

Design your future,

Design your life.

It was a year ago this month that we launched a redesign of the Vital VOICE brand. To look back over the past year, I could have never fathomed all the changes and evolution that our magazine would see. We’ve been blessed with the growth of audience and clients. I credit a lot of the Vital VOICE appeal to the beautiful design work of our Art Director, Andrea Piamonte. Her design voice has made a strong visual statement for the Vital VOICE brand. This month, we celebrate those who bring a keen design eye to our community and our lives. Leading off this month is famed rock star daughter and fashion commentator Kelly Osbourne, who critiques celebrity style weekly on E!’s Fashion Police. Not only is she stylish, but also our in-depth feature outlines her love and alliance with the LGBT community. Speaking of fashion: take a look into the fall season’s must attend event, St. Louis’ and Kansas City’s Fashion Week. Vital VOICE is proud to be a sponsor of these upcoming events.

Design isn’t limited to fashion this month. Our columnist and writer Chris Andoe explores some of St. Louis and Kansas City’s most fabulous homes in his photo feature. This piece on some of the palaces of the plains is sure to stir your stately intrigue. Vital VOICE also caught up with the very handsome Property Brothers from HGTV. Who hasn’t wanted to find a neglected house and turn it into your dream home? These twin creators take us on a journey into buying a home, offer design advice and warn us of the common rookie mistakes in renovating a home. I want to thank everyone that voted in last month’s VOICE Your Choice polls. We were ecstatic to see over 15,000 votes come in. Be sure and pick up next month’s issue of Vital VOICE to see who won!

CYDNEY LUCIO, LOCAL YOUTUBE SENSATION Written by Hanna Botney Photography by Darin Slyman design by Michael Tarazi

I want to show kids that you can be happy and successful and also be

“Hi my name is Cydney. For those of you who don’t know me: I like plants, I like girls, and I love making YouTube videos,” a vibrant redhead says into the camera before she launches into her weekly topic. Cydney Lucio is a college student in the St. Louis area who shares pieces of herself on her YouTube channel. Each week, she discusses anything from LGBT topics to what books she is reading, and everything in between. Her videos started in 2011 with her then-girlfriend. They made videos of their time together and discussed various topics, and the channel really took off. By the time they split, they had nearly 40,000 subscribers and some videos with over 600,000 views. Lucio fell in love with YouTube and the community of people that gather on LGBT YouTube channels and blogs. She created a solo channel and continues to do her thing each week under the username JumpingGayWalrus. Lucio realized she was gay when she was only 13. She laughs as she tells the story: “Let me tell you how dramatic this was. I walked into the room and my mom was watching The L Word. It was

10

September 2014

the episode where Tasha gets kicked out of the Army because she told them she loves Alice. That was the scene that I walked into. I had already been so obsessed with girls and then I watched that scene so I walk into the bathroom and I was like, ‘Cydney, you’re gay.’” Since she attended a very small school with people that were unlikely to accept her sexuality, she didn’t come out until she was 16. She spent the interim researching counter arguments and Bible verses to support what she knew was true about herself. Lucio was never going to let someone question or belittle her because of her sexuality. Her parents have been incredibly accepting. “I came out to my mom and she was like, ‘Okay, cool, what do you want for dinner?’” Lucio recalls. Recently, her mother even appeared in a video about what it is like to be the parent of a gay child. Her mother says in the video that the hardest part of her daughter’s coming out was people’s reactions. “In a town like this, I was afraid for your safety,” her mother says. “I didn’t want people to be mean to you. You just want your kid to be happy.” Lucio asks her mom if she would

change her being gay if she could, and without missing a beat, her mom replies, “Oh my God, no! I wouldn’t change you at all. That wasn’t even hard. You are who you are and I love you the way you are.” There are parents of LGBT kids that watch Lucio’s videos. Seeing her success, and now Lucio’s mother’s point of view, has helped many parents accept and understand their children. Her videos have gotten so much attention that she opened a P.O. Box so people would have another venue to communicate with her. She says that moment is when she really felt like she was part of something bigger. “At first, it felt like we were just talking to ourselves,” Lucio recalls. “Once we started getting letters, that was when it was real. We had people reach out to us telling us that our videos helped them. The videos were obviously super fun to do, but connecting with people is what gave us motivation to continue.” The Internet gives many young people struggling with their sexuality an outlet to find answers. Lucio serves as one of those outlets. She is honest, open and fun to watch. She happily answers questions that people feel like they

cannot ask anyone else, whether about sex, mental health or the coming out process.

Lez BE REAL

She shows people that you can struggle with things in life and still end up happy, healthy and proud to be gay. “I want to show kids that you can be happy and successful — and also be gay,” Lucio says.

Q&A

We laughed as I asked her if she gets recognized a lot. I saw her at an Uh Huh Her concert and introduced myself. She says it happens quite often, especially at LGBT functions. “I think I have been recognized at every LGBT event I have been to for the last two years,” she says. “People will recognize me out and about too. On Black Friday, a bunch of people saw me. I had like seven messages saying ‘I saw you at Target.’”

What is the best thing a person has written you?

Although she isn’t about to give out her home address, she will let people know where she is hanging out so they can come say hi. “I want people to know there are gayborhoods,” she says. “I didn’t know there were any places until I went to college.”

I am really about loose-leaf tea and this girl from France sent me little samples of her favorite teas. My favorite ones are the ones where people tell me their stories. There was one girl who was in London with her class. She went to see a musical and she ran into one of the actresses in it afterwards and they really hit it off. They decided they were going to spend those next five days just being in love. They didn’t give each other last names or any contact information. I love those kinds of stories.

As far as her inspiration for her weekly YouTube topic, it mostly comes from her fans. Many of her videos are Q&A format that come straight from her Tumblr inbox. She answers the questions from her own personal experiences, offering insight and guidance. She will talk about the topics that many people won’t touch. She did an entire video answering questions about sex, as there are hardly any resources available on safe LGBT sex or even just how you go about doing it. Although the serious topics are what make Lucio’s channel so vital to people needing help, she has a lot of fun with her videos as well. She happily shows us the goofier side of herself, going on and on about her plants, tattoos and love of pickles. She will crack open a bag of mystery Jelly Bellys and let us watch her try not to gag as she guesses whether she is eating peach flavor or barf flavor. It always fun to see what she comes up with next. Living her life publicly is not without some challenges. She had to endure a break up publicly, with people prying into the details and inserting their own opinion. “It is great to share your entire life, but at the same time, you’re sharing your entire life,” she says. “My family is super important to me and I love to show my mom and sister on YouTube, but my family is also my escape. I don’t want to lose that for myself. The same goes for my really close friends.” For the most part, she ignores the unkind words and keeps on plugging. The positive impact of making YouTube videos has far outweighs any negative. Lucio plans to keep growing and expanding her channel as long as she keeps helping people. “People need that visibility,” she says. “People need something that represents who they are.” V

Someone told me they named their kid after me – same spelling and everything.

What is the best thing you ever received in your P.O. Box?

Do you see marriage and kids in your future? If it works out with [my girlfriend], then I am totally okay with it. [Laughs] I want to have kids and I want to get married.

What would you like to do for a living? I would like to do grief counseling. Originally, what I wanted to do was run my own funeral home. I wanted it to not be religious and be in a very LGBT friendly area. But if I were to go into grief counseling or just counseling in general, I want to have some type of focus on the LGBT community.

What do you like to do in your free time? Right now I am really into Parks & Recreation. I really liked Breaking Bad. A lot of Netflix. When I am in St. Louis, I take advantage of the Botanical Gardens, the Zoo, and the farmers markets. When I can, I go home and hang out with my family.

What is your favorite book? I just read Zami: A New Spelling of My Name by Audre Lorde and loved it.

What is your favorite movie? Girl Interrupted.

Lauren McGrew Alicia Janesko Caftans After realizing that there was a large gap between the lower price lines found at department stores and lines found under luxury brand labels, Alicia Janesko Caftans’ desire was to fill the need for a handcrafted designer line at bridge price points. More importantly, she wanted to curate a line that would function as a cover-up during the day and transform into evening wear at night. (Photo by Cameron Gee)

Lauren McGrew is the head designer at the nationally renowned TOMBOY design studio. She has been independently designing since 2003. Named KC’s best designer in 2009 and 2010, she offers couture quality apparel created in KC. Luxurious fabrics and exceptional fit have made the label one of the most coveted in KC. The TOMBOY label is built for women of style who won’t sacrifice comfort and ease. Made of lightweight, travelready knits, this collection belongs in every active woman’s closet and suitcase. McGrew’s signature collections are sold exclusively though luxury retailer’s nationwide.

Everyone wonders what it’s like to walk the red carpet, right? Unfortunately, not many will receive the opportunity. With Lauren Bander’s collection, LB, you can feel as if you are walking the red carpet every day. In addition to the red carpet, Paris also inspired Bander’s collection. After visiting Paris numerous times and vividly remembering the architecture, language and culture, she uses it all as inspiration for her designs. She wants to give a couture feel to the everyday woman.

Anthony Ryan Auld is a Louisiana-based fashion designer who won the second season of Lifetime’s Project Runway All Stars, along with the Fan Favorite title. He was originally featured on the show’s ninth season. A graduate of Louisiana State University, Auld is known for his (Photo by Tate Tullier Photography) unconventional use of fabrics and raw outlook. He has been recognized nationally for his award-winning designs, and has studied design techniques in Paris under the masterminds of Vivienne Westwood, Basil Soda, Elie Saab, Jean-Paul Gaultier and Anne-Valerie Hash. As a cancer survivor, Auld is the founder of ROAR, a non-profit foundation that gives voice to those with inspiring stories in the face of adversity.

Laura Kathleen Baker

Laura Kathleen Baker is a St. Louis-based designer who has been working on her fashion career since she was 8 years old. She attended Western Kentucky University where she earned a Bachelors degree in Design, Merchandising and Textiles. She also studied fashion design at Academia Italiana in Florence, Italy. (Photo Courtesy by Laura Kathleen Baker) Remaining in St. Louis, she represents someone who obtains luxury. The LK woman likes to be glamorous, elegant and sophisticated, all while being sexy at the same time. Baker was originally on season nine of Project Runway as a top five finalist. She then went on to compete on season two of Project Runway All Stars where she finished in the top six. Baker now casts the new designers on season 10-13 with Lifetime and has also been the commentary on the Road to the Runway. thevitalVOICE.com

Jimmy No Show Photography by Brian Bowen Smith (E!) Written by

There’s not much about Kelly Osbourne that isn’t outspoken — from her personality to her quirky fashion style and purple hair. “It’s my Vivian Westwood,” she says, referencing the famous redhead, “And I don’t think I’ll ever change it. It’s me.” So far, being herself has worked. When her career started on her family’s hit MTV realty series The Osbournes, she was known as the rebellious, don’tgive-a-fuck child.“I was in my most awkward phase in life and [The Osbournes] didn’t really help with that,” she says. “But I am really happy that other people got to see those awkward moments.”

Osbourne’s experience of feeling different at a young age is something everyone can relate to. Almost four years after the series ended, another reality TV show changed Osbourne’s life in a completely different way. In 2009, she signed on for Dancing With The Stars. When I casually mentioned the show, her friendly tone shifted. “I just got out of rehab and wanted to lose weight,” she begins.

At the time, she was cursing like a sailor and wearing all black — to say she stood out for being different would be an understatement.

“I was absolutely convinced I would be thrown out the first week. I was terrified. I didn’t even know I could dance. It completely changed my life!”

“Hopefully [the viewers] didn’t feel alone when they were going through them too,” she says. “It happens to everyone.”

Osbourne paired up with openly gay ballroom dancer Louis van Amstel, but not by coincidence. “I refused to do the show if I wasn’t dancing with a thevitalVOICE.com

K gay man,” she explains. “You have to be so close [to your partner] and you will build some form of a physical attraction.”

In her post-rehab state, Osbourne was still feeling insecure and van Amstel helped her find her feet again. “I couldn’t have asked for a better partner,” she says. “He really figured me out. He taught me dedication. He taught me not to give up on myself. He taught me how to eat right. He taught me to believe in myself.

know everyone,” she continues. “The Oscars are The Oscars! How many people can say they’ve walked the red carpet at The Oscars? It’s just such a Hollywood legendary thing to be a part of.”

In addition to Fashion Police, this year Osbourne joined up with the Broadway hit Kinky Boots’ “Just Be” campaign, although she had some reservations (ironically they were fashion-related).

It wasn’t until after The Osbournes ended that her personal style began to mature and grow.

“Those boots,” she says with a sigh.

“I’m not afraid to try new things, and I don’t want to be a sheep and look like everybody else.

“Plus, I just get along better with gay men,” she adds with a laugh.

Living in LA, when you’re surrounded by sheep, it’s easy to find a wolf – and I’m not afraid to be a wolf.”

With a gay ballroom champion on her arm, Osbourne was ready to tackle the dance floor.

It’s not hard to notice a wolf like Osbourne, with her signature purple hair.

“It wasn’t an easy learning curve,” she says. “I had to stand in front of a mirror for eight hours a day and it sucked. You see every tiny little flaw that you have! But oh my God, I didn’t realize my butt was that big!”

“You have to realize when I first did this four years ago, I got so much abuse that I changed it back to blonde,” she explains.

Osbourne’s hard work began to pay off, with her dancing partner’s help.

“I started seeing my body changing and I was like, ‘Wow! I really can do this. This is so fun,’” she recalls. “It just taught me dedication, and just changed me completely and I never thought I would learn to love myself through ballroom dancing.”

Osbourne went on to final show, taking third place — a far cry for being thrown out the first week. Soon after, in 2010, another television role popped up as a panelist and presenter on E!’s Fashion Police .

Even before her Fashion Police days, Osbourne was no stranger to the red carpet.

“They’re all so much fun,” she says. “I can’t lie, even though I have the job of critiquing it the next day. The Golden Globes are great because everyone gets absolutely shitfaced! The things you see will blow your mind. “The Grammy’s I like because I

Never one to conform, the blonde comeback didn’t last.

“I was like, ‘No! I want my hair the color I want it to be,’ so I went back to [purple].” If there’s one thing Osbourne has mastered, it is taking what she’s got and making it work. “I’ve got a big jaw,” she says. “I got that from my father. Thank you very much, Dad!”

In fact, she explains that a drag queen taught her how to contour with makeup and draw attention away from her jawline. The idea of being a wolf – embracing her differences – is what makes Osbourne resonate with the LGBT community. It’s also a theme that Osbourne has lived her entire life.

“Look at my family,” she says. “We are the most open and nonjudgmental people. I was brought up to never judge people. Everyone can be who they want to be.”

“I never wear boots with an inch or more,” referencing the show’s signature high-heeled boots used in the campaign’s shoot. “But it wasn’t about me,” she says. “It’s about the cause and the message it sends: to be who you are, be free to be whatever you want to be. It doesn’t matter if people don’t like it. There’s someone out there that will.

“Confidence in yourself is infectious to other people,” she continues. “It’s almost as infectious as the common cold. I like being around happy, fun people.”

More recently, the Trevor Project Prom offered the chance to win a date to their prom with Osbourne. “It was my idea!” she says. “I thought if I’m going to go to this, I might as well make it fun for somebody. So, I went on my first lesbian date, which I loved!

“She was so sweet,” she continues. “She brought me a corsage and it was so lovely! We just had a really lovely time, and it was a really fun event to be apart of. I got to see Shangela perform and she is everything!” It’s clear from her excitement just how proud Osbourne is to support the LGBT community. The message she wants to get across through her activism is simple.“Remain confident about who you are,” she says. “Fuck what anyone else says. No one has the right to tell you whom you can and cannot love. No one!” No arguments here. V

Property Brothers’ Drew & Jonathan Scott

Would you trust two guys to take a dingy, scary fixer-upper and turn it into your dream home on a budget? Apparently, the answer everyone that’s ever appeared on HGTV’s Property Brothers gives is, “Absolutely not!” The wildly successful Property Brothers features twin brothers realtor Drew Scott and contractor Jonathan Scott as they guide newbie homeowners through the process of buying, renovating and loving fixer-upper homes. I chatted with the brothers and grilled them on their show, their jobs and mistakes not to make when dipping your feet in the real estate pool. thevitalVOICE.com

37

Do you guys always work together like you do on the show, or is it more separate than that?

Drew, what are some of the biggest mistakes that homeowners make when selling their homes?

We run multiple companies together and enjoy working together. It’s nice to have a business partner you know you can trust. We actually work with our other brother JD as well. Brothers in business!

Undervaluing the importance of staging and repairing minor issues with the house. Even though staging doesn’t add hard value to a home (hard value being something like renovating a bathroom which will help the house appraise at a higher value), in the eyes of buyers a well staged home looks more appealing and they will offer you more money.

We do have individual ventures as well, though. Jonathan is an award-winning illusionist and has performed in Vegas. I love directing and try to direct a couple productions a year – when time permits!

Do you ever get comments from fans on which aspect of the show they like the most? Jonathan gets the most response, as I think many of our viewers love a man who gets his hands dirty. He has also had more proposals via Twitter than me. [Laughs] We are very interactive through our social media and love answering our fans’ questions. The biggest thing fans seem to love on the show is that we aren’t stuffy designer/contractor/agent types. We try to make our shows relatable for our viewers and we like to have fun during the process.

Jonathan, what’s your design philosophy? I believe your home truly should reflect your personality while also making your life easier. If you love to entertain, it is important to create wonderful gathering areas. If you have four kids, maybe having upgraded laundry facilities and a spacious playroom with storage is key. There is not one correct way to do anything in design. Every homeowner has unique needs and their own sense of style. I quite enjoy the process of discovering who they are and what they want, but keep in mind, many homeowners don’t really know what they like or what’s available on the market. It’s my job to take them just outside of their comfort zone and deliver something they never knew they’d love.

38

September 2014

Many buyers are also too emotionally attached to their home and are biased when valuing the property. That is why it’s important to trust a good agent to do a market analysis for your home so that you have a better chance at selling in a reasonable time frame.

What are the common “rookie mistakes” you both see in your lines of work? We constantly come across do-it-yourself disasters where homeowners market a sale as “professionally renovated.” The moment we step into the house, we can see the work was not done by a professional. You are doing yourself a disservice trying to do improvements if they are out of your ability. The money you feel you’ll save by not hiring a professional will be lost when you turn around to sell. Buyers will see the shabby work and either offer you less or simply walk away. You are also putting doubt in the buyer’s mind because they will be wondering what other shoddy work you tried to do behind the walls. Electrical? Plumbing? Homeowners who feel they know the price of their property better than professionals is also a common rookie mistake. They don’t realize that the price of other listed properties in the area doesn’t matter. Only the sale prices of the sold homes in the area matter. I also try to educate that the city tax assessment is a terrible way to value your home. This is a very broad guesstimate of the value of

your home based on averaging the houses in the community.

It’s all part of the process.

Your shows, and HGTV in general, really resonate with the LGBT audience. Why do you think that is?

So Jonathan, speaking of drama: Have you ever had someone really dislike one of your design or reno decisions? If so, what’s the worst experience you’ve had with a homeowner not liking something you’ve done?

The one thing that everyone has in common is the desire to have a beautiful retreat they can call home. We love helping homeowners find their dream home and have worked with people from all walks of life. I feel it’s HGTV’s, Jonathan’s and my open, honest and sincere dedication to helping families that appeals to all of our audiences.

What makes a comfortable, livable home, in your opinions? Somewhere that gives you peace of mind. Jonathan is not a fan of long commutes, so for him one of the most important things is having a short commute to and from work. More time at home with his two dogs, Stewie and Gracie, gives him peace of mind. I really love organization. Like many people, if your home is functional, organized and fits your lifestyle…it’s more comfortable.

What is one element everyone should try and incorporate into their homes? Their personalities – without going too far. I’ve seen people remove all bedrooms because they love an open floor plan. This cost a lot of money to do, but when they go to sell down the road it’ll cost thousands to turn the house back into something buyers want to see. Instead, try adding your personality through artwork and décor pieces. These are much easier to swap out if needed but can still help define your space.

You guys have a fun sibling rivalry dynamic on your shows. Does that exist off-camera as well? It’s ever present! Jonathan says I am probably the most competitive person he has ever known. We don’t compete to knock each other down, though. We always strive to push each other to new heights. There’s a lot we can accomplish on our own but even more we can accomplish together.

Piggybacking off the sibling rivalry aspect, how well could you do each others’ jobs?

Fortunately (knock on faux wood table top) I’ve never had a homeowner hate the design. Sometimes there are individual furniture or décor pieces they don’t like, and that’s easy to swap. I’m a very collaborative designer, so there is a lot of communication throughout the whole process. I did have one client who wanted something really edgy in their dining room. I hired a graffiti artist to do this incredible abstract feature wall only to discover once it was done that the homeowner hated that particular color. Five hours down the toilet. I primed over it and my graffiti artist started again. Same design, different color. Always tell your designer your dislikes before he starts a major project. [Laughs]

What’s in the future for the Property Brothers? There is a LOT happening down the pipeline. Currently we are working on our first book. Our furniture and décor line will be coming out this year and as global ambassadors for World Vision, we have more campaign involvement throughout the year. Brother vs Brother season 2 premiered this summer, and we have a fourth series that will be airing this fall, showing the renovation of our place at home in Vegas. If that wasn’t enough we’ve green lit three shows with our production company Scott Brothers Entertainment! We are always looking to find new ways to grow and we are ever learning.

...many of these homeowners have not watched our shows. We try to find people who don’t know the shows and don’t like the idea of a renovation.

Many people don’t realize that I was a licensed agent and broker for our real estate company. So I literally could do Drew’s job and have! [Laughs] The big difference is that Drew is a clean freak and has no desire to do my job. I will admit, though, when we first started renovating, Drew was great at laying tile or putting up siding.

On the shows, sometimes homeowners get really nasty with you guys. Is the drama amped up for the sake of TV, or are some people really that ungrateful? I mean, you’re the Property Brothers! Our viewers always ask us why we don’t just say to these families,”Haven’t you seen our show? Of course we can renovate this place within your budget!” In reality, many of these homeowners have not watched our shows. We try to find people who don’t know the shows and don’t like the idea of a renovation. We realize that buying, selling and renovating can be very stressful and that’s why we don’t mind our clients venting a little.

Drew, what are three pieces of advice you’d give to people looking into buying their first homes? 1. Educate yourself on the processes involved with buying your first home. 2. Work with professionals that will make the buying process easier (realtor, lawyer, contractor, inspector, etc). 3. Get your financing in order ahead of time so you know how much you can qualify for. This way, you’ll avoid falling in love with a home you can’t afford.

Jonathan, what are three pieces of advice you’d give to people looking into doing some renovations on their homes? Plan in advance. If you’re doing a six-month renovation and know you’ll need fixtures, appliances, flooring, etc., don’t wait until the last minute to buy them or you’ll be forced to buy at that price. Shop around because every retailer revolves discounted items. Planning in advance can save you up to 50 percent. Do not over renovate. Add-ons can really get out of control and there are many things you could put into a home that will never pay you back when you sell. Talk to a good realtor who knows that community. They can tell you where your renos would max out. Hire the right contractor. Do your research, check if they are licensed, bonded registered with organizations like the Better Business Bureau and also call their references. Use sites like Porch.com to see reviews, photos of their work and details of where they specialize. If you have ANY red flags go up, find another contractor. V thevitalVOICE.com
