ACA Foundation Delivers Future Leaders Forum for Tomorrow’s Leaders The Future Leaders Forum was held on Thursday 21 and Friday 22 February 2013 in Adelaide. The Forum was attended by 21 scholarship recipients from across Australia and New Zealand. The purpose of the Forum is to assist younger members of the industries that ACA serves to develop skills which will assist in their personal and professional development. By providing financial support, ACA Foundation Ltd. is leading the way in positively contributing to the work and personal lives of those who are likely to advance to senior positions in the industry in the future. The Foundation provided principal funding support for what is rapidly becoming one of the leading personal and professional development events
in the corrosion related industries. Further support for the Forum was also received from ACA and its South Australia Branch. The 21 young men and women listed below were successful in securing delegate spaces on the program. Competitive applications were received from all parts of Australia and New Zealand. As in 2012, the 2013 Forum was oversubscribed with substantially more applications received than there were places available. Dean Wall, ACA Foundation Ltd. Chairman who participated in the program and presented on mentoring, said “the Forum is very popular with younger members of the industry. Their employers and direct managers value the work which ACA is doing in this area with support from the Foundation”. ACA Foundation Ltd. funds the accommodation, travel, meals, entertainment and two days of professionally facilitated development activities for all Forum participants.

Dr Carol Powell In addition to the 2013 Scholarship Program, ACA Foundation Ltd. will support the Australasian lecture tour of internationally recognised corrosion and materials expert Dr Carol Powell. Carol Powell has been a consultant metallurgist to the Nickel Institute and Copper Development Association in the UK for over 20 years with particular specialisation in copper-nickels and their application in marine and related industries. She has been a member of the UK Marine Corrosion Forum and International Copper Association Copper-Nickel Task Force and is currently deputy chair of the European Federation of Corrosion Marine Working Party. Her Nickel Institute activities have developed an in-depth knowledge of stainless steels and their application in the water industry. During this time, she has been involved in many workshops and conferences internationally including the USA, Europe and South East Asia and the Far East. In the UK, she has actively worked on guidelines and standards for the industry and provided material advice for companies associated with water and waste water treatment plants. Dr Powell is a graduate of Birmingham University, a member of the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science and Technology and a Fellow of the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining. She has written over 40 papers and publications.
made the following comment on the Forum. “I attended the FLF with the intention to network and learn a bit about public speaking. It was so much more than that... The Forum provided us with a mentoring opportunity with experienced professionals. They helped us identify areas for professional and personal development, for instance how important it is to be ourselves, how to deal with different personalities in the workplace and coping mechanisms in stressful situations. We also had lots of fun as we learnt about public speaking. Most importantly, I made genuine friends and am looking forward to the next event just to catch up with everyone! I can safely say on behalf of all attendees thank you so much to the ACA Foundation Ltd and the ACA for organising this forum.” Entries for the 2014 Future Leaders Forum will be open in October 2013.
