Letter from the Editor

Appreciating the Community College Experience I moved to Austin in the fall of 2013 from a small town called Belton, just an hour north of Austin. When I came to Austin, all I wanted to do was bypass community college and transfer to the University of Texas to obtain my journalism degree. However, in the two years that I have been here, I’ve grown to love ACC and the community college life. I didn’t realize how much I would grow to appreciate every opportunity the small classes and Student Life organizations had to offer. Austin Community College helped me juggle volunteering, my full-time job at a Mediterranean restaurant and working on this magazine with wonderful people. I hope the information the staff and I put into this magazine will give readers an understanding of what life at ACC is like and how they can make the transition a little easier. The magazine contains tips about admissions and navigating college life. It is important to us that your time here at ACC is as stress free as possible. What I wish for more than anything is for my fellow students to have as wonderful a time at ACC as I did. Have a great semester everyone!

CONQUERING STRESS Seven Causes and How to Alleviate Them

Successfully handling stress is essential to achieving college goals. Dealing with the following common stressors head-on is a positive step toward preventing problems and averting crisis. by Lucas Bolton

1. Procrastination Waiting until the last minute can make any task seem harder than it is. • Review notes regularly. • Take care of homework promptly. • Plan big projects as soon as possible. Applying these three strategies may increase efficiency and improve grades.

2. Finances Living expenses and educational costs are constantly vying for students’ limited resources. • Create a budget and stick to it. • Pay bills on time. • Ask businesses if they offer student discounts and make use of free and reduced cost services and activities for students. • Apply for federal financial aid, private grants and scholarships. Keep track of deadlines and apply early. • Fill out the ACC Foundation scholarship application. One application allows students to apply for the numerous scholarships the foundation administers. 7. Feeling Isolated The transition to college can be difficult. • Joining student organizations and getting involved with the Office of Student Life are great ways to engage in social interaction while developing professional skills. Students may visit the Student Life office on any ACC campus or learn more online at austincc.edu/sl. • Counselors are available through ACC’s Student Services Department to help with both career and personal concerns. • For local resources including food, shelter, rent assistance and child care, dial 2-1-1 or visit www.211texas.org. Tips for College Students ADV ISIN G

TBOOKS X E T Sean Perry, Student: “The first year I spent about $800 on books, and they were all new! I could have saved $500-$600 if I had rented. I feel that most people don’t even realize how much money it saves them.”

G LABS N I N R LEA

Rafael Ochoa, Advising Specialist:

“Making the most out of an advising session requires that the student comes prepared with questions, time and patience. The first session sometimes takes longer than others because I may have to spend extra time digging for what the student needs and questions they need answered that they might not even be aware of yet. Be mindful and have an open mind. There’s a lot of information and it cannot all be processed in one session. Meet with us at least once every semester. In person, email or phone. No excuses!”

Jorge Mendoza, Student: “Advising and counseling really helped me choose wisely what classes I needed and should take. They were able to tell me what classes were available during any given semester and which ones were not. This was extremely helpful.”

Harrison Smith, Graduate: ”The learning lab was always a great place to get work done. Anytime I needed clarification on a subject, the staff was always ready to help. I would list the learning lab as one of the top resources at ACC that helped me succeed in graduating.”

TAKING NOT ES

Rachel Proctor, Student: ”The learning lab is a great environment to work on your studies, with access to many varieties of help including computer use and tutoring. It’s easy to get overwhelmed as a college student, but with the help of the learning lab you will gain all the right tools needed to succeed.”

SCHED UL I

NG

Samuel Manaway, Student: Taking notes is not the way it was in high school. I just write down everything the teacher is saying. When I look back I am able to recall what she was talking about in more detail than in the main points she presented in her slideshow during the lecture.

Tyler Castro, Student: ”I like to compare it to going for a run. I clear my mind of all stresses, focus on one important thing and put one foot in front of the other to get to my end goal.”

Lauren Ferrante, Student: ”A daily/weekly planner is a must so you can write down work schedules, class times, test dates and dedicated study times so you can stay on top of everything!”

ANNA MUELLER Story by Jessica Youssefi, Photo by Melisa Urban

A

nna Mueller’s resume packs a punch. The 24-year-old kinesiology student is a former Israeli Defense Forces officer, holds a black belt in karate, speaks fluent Russian and Hebrew, and has maintained a 4.0 grade point average during her time at ACC. Still, the 2014-2015 Student of the Year is more than a mere list of accomplishments. Mueller’s military background and multicultural experiences have inspired her service to fellow students. As vice president of ACC’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society, Mueller brought her self defense training into play when planning fundraisers for student scholarships. “I didn’t want to do something generic,” Mueller said. “I wanted to do something a little different, and I like sharing my experience in martial arts.” Combining her background in karate and experience training soldiers in combat fitness, Mueller organized a teach-in fundraiser during Sexual Assault Awareness month in April. During the sessions, Mueller taught self-defense maneuvers. For the fundraiser, participants were charged $5 per class. Fifteen students attended the first class, and by the third class, attendance had doubled.

PTK faculty advisor Mary Kohls witnessed Mueller’s dedication and effectiveness as a student leader first-hand. “Anna is a real go-getter,” Kohls said. “She is very energetic and very intelligent and excited about education.” Mueller’s excitement for learning started with her early experiences. She was born in Ukraine and moved to Israel as a young child. Her appreciation for the various cultures she was exposed

“I didn’t want to do something generic. I wanted to do something a little different.” to inspired the multicultural-night event she organized through PTK. The event allowed students to share information about their cultures and home countries. “We had students presenting countries like Ecuador, Ukraine, France and many more,” Mueller said. “It was my idea and directing, but it was executed by our own members which was very cool.” Mueller also participated in Competitive Edge and College Fish, two online programs through PTK that engage students with tools to help them excel in education and other aspects of life.

The programs emphasize resume building and provide tips and advice on acquiring scholarships, transferring to a 4-year college and landing that dream job. By encouraging her peers, Mueller was able to triple the number of members participating in Competitive Edge. Anna’s husband and best friend, Pablo Mueller, has been by her side to witness her many endeavors and achievements. “What is most inspiring about my wife Anna is her burning desire to achieve the goals and dreams she has,” he said. “I know how many obstacles she’s come across in order to obtain her goals but she has always found a way to overcome them.” As Mueller embarks upon her future studies, she and her husband plan to move to Miami where she has been accepted into Florida International University. She hopes to obtain a doctorate in physical training. Wherever life may take her, Mueller said she holds her time at ACC very dear and has fond memories of her involvement. “I worked very hard, and I was very much honored to receive the Student of the Year Award,” Mueller said. “I knew some of the people who were nominated as well, and they were also very deserving of the award, so I was very humbled.” Fall 2015 - Spring 2016 | 33

DEVIN WHITE Devin White stands out as a leader. As campus team chair, he led the Cypress Creek Campus Team to produce 23 events which served more than 700 students. He scored 20 points during the ACC vs. Australia men’s intramural basketball game, and maintained a 4.0 grade point average while holding two part-time jobs. Even with all this success, the 2014-2015 Campus Team MVP describes himself as the man behind the scenes who makes sure everything goes well. White explained that his role as campus team chair is one of support where he helps the other team members with their jobs of creating programs that engage, entertain and inform the student body. “Being campus team chair is not being a boss, because a boss tells people what to do,” White said. “It’s a leadership position, because leaders show people what to do and help them do it.” White compared his position on the campus team to being a shooting guard on a basketball

34 | Life 4U

team. White said he doesn’t take all the shots for himself. He passes the ball and lets his teammates score similar to the way he collaborates with campus team members. White is particularly proud of the collaboration that resulted in the “Know Your Rights” event. With the recent controversy surrounding the deaths of several unarmed black men at the hands of police in the United States, White

“Leaders show people what to do and help them do it.” thought it was a good idea to educate students on their civil and legal rights and responsibilities. “It wasn’t about being negative toward the police,” White said. “It was about knowing our rights as American citizens.” Representatives from the police department and the Texas Rangers’ office came to interact with students and dispel misconceptions that may have risen from media coverage. The program proved to be the most attended Student Life event at the Cypress Creek Campus during the 2014-2015 academic year. Student Life Coordinator Quevarra Moten, who worked with White during his term as campus chair, summed him up in one word

— remarkable. “Devin is an extraordinary leader, not only for our campus team, but the entire Cypress Creek Campus,” Moten said. She described White as the glue that held the campus team together. Because of his participation in cocurricular activities, efforts to maintain a stellar academic record and working two part-time jobs, White has become a master of time management. He said he limits the hours he works at his jobs and makes sure that he schedules time for rest and relaxation. White advises students to get involved with cocurricular activities and to “keep at it as long as your grades aren’t dropping and you aren’t getting tired. College is what you make of it,” he said. After graduating from ACC, White plans to pursue further studies in environmental engineering and criminal justice at Texas State University or Texas A&M University. White also plans to become a mentor to children in disadvantaged neighborhoods. In true behind-the-scenes fashion, White gave credit to the other campus team chairs who were nominated for campus team MVP. “I was surprised I won,” he said. “I know people do more if not the same amount of work as me.” Story by Ryan Fontenette-Mitchell Photo by Melisa Urban

CAMPUS TEAM of the Year

Ryan Fontenette-Mitchell by Ryan Fontenette-Mitchell

1.

The Office of Student Life supports campus teams on each of ACC’s 11 campuses. During the 2014-2015 academic year, the Round Rock Campus Team stood out. The 10-student, Round Rock team produced 40 events which served nearly 4,000 students. That’s equivalent to 83% of the Round Rock Campus student body population. “We are very interactive and our doors will always be open,” Nicolas Restrepo, campus team office manager, said. The 40 campus-team-led events included a time management program which used games like speed Jenga to help students understand time management, and a “Tea Talk” session during Women’s History Month to

2.

celebrate female leadership and network building. Campus team volunteer Maleha Baset said her favorite event was the flash mob dance to Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” because it helped her break out of her shell and become more comfortable interacting with fellow students. Baset has been chosen to return to the campus team as the director of programming during fall 2015. Student Life Specialist Samantha Cook encourages all students to become involved in Student Life programming as a member of a campus team, as a volunteer or just to come out and enjoy the events. “We love this campus and we love our campus team,” Cook said. “But if you’re

not at Round Rock go see the SL office and campus team at the campus you attend, because I guarantee you, they are just as passionate.” The ACC Student Life campus team is a group of student leaders at each campus who: • Plan and create experiences and programs for their peers • Provide assistance during peak registration periods • Participate in focus groups and panels as needed • Provide information for improving student services and information dissemination Paid volunteer and work study positions are available.

CAMPUS Event of the Year by Ryan Fontenette-Mitchell In celebration of Black History Month, the Hays Campus Team held its “Segregation, How Does it Feel?” event. The team’s goal was to challenge belief systems, shed light on past issues and learn from them. “We wanted the students to be more informed about Black History, but also bring history back into play so that the students could get a better glimpse of what it was like back then,” Roshunda Bell, Student Life staff member, said. Students wrote how the event made them feel on note cards and then posted them to a bulletin board. Reactions were mixed. Some said the event was wonderful while others were offended. This was the type of thought provoking response the campus team wanted. “I definitely grew from the event,” Alex Flores, the campus team’s director of wellness and sustainability, said.

Phi Theta Kappa

Chartered Organization of the Year

by Lucas Bolton Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society in which students at twoyear coleges can gain experience in leadership and networking through service projects. Members of Alpha Gamma Pi, Austin Community College’s local chapter of PTK, held several events

including “Frontiers in the Spirit of Exploration” which focused on suicide awareness and prevention. The PTK students involved in the event researched the causes of suicide and depression, and presented practical ways to help those who may be depressed or on the verge of suicide.

The project’s motto was “Take Ten to Save a Friend” and advocated that students take a proactive approach in suicide prevention by talking with people they see who may be sinking into the depths of depression. For more information visit austincc.edu/ptk.
