o you get Housing Benefit to help pay your rent and have someone living with you, aged 18 or over, other than your partner? Then the non-dependant deduction could affect you. What is changing? The Government is increasing the nondependant deductions made from Housing and Council Tax Benefits. This means that you could get less Housing Benefit if a non-dependant lives with you.

What is a nondependant? A non-dependant is someone who lives with you, is aged 18 or over and is not a joint tenant, border or partner. They could be a grownup son or daughter, a friend or another relative. Will this change affect me? If a non-dependant lives with you, your Housing Benefit will be reduced. However, the amount deducted will depend on the non-dependant’s circumstances, for example if they work or

claim benefits and their age. Anyone who claims Housing and Council Tax Benefit and has a nondependant living with them will be affected.

Resident top tips

R

esident Claudette Bonnet isn’t just a whizz in the kitchen (we hope you tried her recipe for seasoned rice as published in the last edition) - she also knows a top tip or two. Claudette says: “We are all feeling the pressure of making our budget stretch further these days and to minimise waste, here are my top tips on food shopping. “Use by” and “best before” dates are required by law.

However, there are some other basic guidelines that can help you to get the most from filling up your cupboards.” 1: Avoid fruits with bruised or broken skin 2: Don’t let raw fish or meat drip onto other foods – this can cause cross contamination and ruin your food 3: Avoid rusty or dented tins and damaged packaging – once air gets in, food will not keep 4: Check that eggs are not broken before you buy them to ensure you get the full pack

5: Don’t leave frozen, chilled foods, raw meat, poultry or fish in the boot of a warm car, as it can go off 6: Most supermarkets do price comparisons on goods – make use of this to find the best deals Have you got a recipe or some top tips to share with readers? esidents and local agencies in Bordesley Green were invited to come together recently as part of a special ‘Meet your Neighbour’ event. The event, held at Blakeland Street Community Centre, encouraged local agencies and the community to come together, get to know each other and find out what’s happening in the

The Your Bordesley Green Partnership is made up of community activists and local agencies, and is being championed by Ashram Housing Association. Its purpose is to work with the community

and residents to codevelop locally grown solutions to tackling neighbourhood priorities such as community safety, the environment and developing more opportunities for young people. The Near Neighbours Programme is a Government-funded scheme which runs until March 2014. The project aims to bring people together to improve their neighbourhoods.

Leanne Bell, Senior Personal Assistant and Dementia Champion at Accord, said: “Dementia UK is a charity that is very close to our hearts. We managed to raise £500 for the charity and importantly we also raised awareness of dementia.”

Staff get in a spin to raise cash Students praise Moseley and District placement for worthy cause

S

taff from Accord’s Bournville House got into a spin when they took part in a gruelling 24-hour sponsored ‘spin’-style bike challenge. Lucas Bladen, Ree Richardson, Louise Hicks, Adrian Ellis and Danielle Jones raised £400 for Bournville House, where they all work, by taking part in a ‘spinathon’. The funds raised will be used to pay for outings

and entertainment for residents of Bournville House, which is in Lightmoor Village in Telford. Louise Hicks, Domiciliary Care and Support Manager at Bournville House, said: “It was a fantastic event and a number of the residents stayed up during the night to

give us support and encouragement.” Spin is a popular high energy, low impact cardio session which participants do on indoor specialist bikes.

How long have you worked in your current job and what did you do before? I have been in my current role for six years and before this, I worked as a homeless prevention officer for Ashram. I started working for Ashram in 1996 as a volunteer whilst I was studying a counselling qualification, shortly after I applied for a permanent position.

What do you enjoy about your job? I enjoy that fact that my job gives me the opportunity to make a positive contribution to a person’s life. I also like the development side of my role, such as coming up and launching new projects like our music studio, which was launched earlier this year. How can I contact you? You can email me at sahdaish@ashramha.org. uk. If you are experiencing domestic abuse and want to talk to someone at Ashram, call 0121 764 3817 from 9am to 5pm, Monday-Friday, or email rdvp@ashramha.org.uk

V

olunteering is about giving your time for free to do something that benefits an individual or your community. We offer a huge range of ways to volunteer, building your skills, confidence and employability at the same time. What are the benefits of volunteering? There are lots of reasons to become a volunteer. Not only can it help build your confidence and give something back to your community but it’s also a fun way to gain new skills that could help you find work or change your career. Will it cost me anything? No, if you volunteer with us you are entitled

to claim travel and outof-pocket expenses. If we signpost you to another organisation, expenses claims would be discussed with them. If you receive benefits, you should always inform the benefits agency if you decide to volunteer. Will I need a Criminal Records Bureau and reference checks? If the placement is with us you will be asked to complete a CRB form and provide two references. Other organisations also may request this. What type of volunteering could I do? We have lots of opportunities, from driving and gardening to caring and escorting people to appointments.

There are also opportunities to volunteer within an office environment. We also sign post people to other organisations such as hospitals, charities and other housing organisations. Where can I find volunteering roles? All of our volunteering roles are advertised on do-it.org. You can search for our vacancies by visiting this website or your local volunteer centre. How can I find out more? To find out more, contact Irene Casserley, Accord Group Volunteer Services Manager, on 0300 111 7000 or email irene.casserley@ caldmorehousing.co.uk

ur housing officers are on track to save an impressive 500 ‘fuel’ miles this year by ditching their cars for visits to nearby Moseley and District estates and homes. The team has walked an impressive 250 miles since December last year, by walking to visit you rather than using their cars and motorbikes. Each month, Housing

Officer’s Peter Helly and Katie Gallon will record the miles they have walked and the equivalent financial and CO2 savings. They are also hoping to start cycling to visits too. Katie Gallon, Housing Officer, said: “Walking and cycling to visits is not only more environmentally-friendly but it can often be quicker as we don’t get stuck in traffic queues.”

We visited homes in Bartley Green, Edgbaston, Balsall Heath, Sparkbrook, Sparkhill and Moseley, as part of Noise Action Week. Noise Action Week, which ran from

Monday, 21 May to Friday, 25 May, is an annual initiative by Environmental Protection UK to highlight the problems noise disturbance can cause to communities. Staff toured estates to highlight practical solutions to noise problems, promote communication and consideration between neighbours and offer information about noiserelated services.

We also worked with Saint Martin de Porres Primary School in Moseley, where pupils designed posters about noise nuisance to display at our Alcester Road office. Pupils were also asked to come up with poems and rhymes about noise nuisance, with the best three awarded prizes and given certificates recognising their achievements.

Mike’s role is extended

Nuneaton

T

his month Dennis Neale, treasurer for Alpha Housing Co-operative in Handsworth, Birmingham, tells us what it’s like to live there. “I’ve lived so long in a co-operative house that I’ve forgotten (well almost) what life was like under the local authority. I’ve always said I liked old houses and that’s exactly what I’ve got. “High ceilings, plenty of space, a big garden and something really old fashioned - a cellar (can’t afford the wine to go in it though). In case you might think I’m a very happy man, it all comes with a price. Decorating can be a bit costly and that garden requires a bit of effort as well. “The co-operative has 33 units and not a new one amongst the lot. They all date from 1888 to 1912 and are tucked away in a quiet part

of leafy Handsworth, between Rookery Road and Grove Lane. “We have lived in the area for over 48 years and for almost 30 of these in a co-operative owned house. Unlike the first 18 years, I no longer have to worry about waiting for repairs and maintenance, every property now exceeds the decent homes standard. “The co-op has benefited over the years by having a really solid core of committee members who have kept up the standards in both the repairs and financial systems. We have recently finished renewing all the kitchens, which followed the fitting of new double glazing and the complete replacement of all the central heating systems. And for next year, well that’s up to the members, but I did hear one mention gold plated bath taps.”

I

n this edition of Our House, clients Simon Argyle, Stuart Carrigan, Mike Butler and Jake Honour give us the low down on Nuneaton. Tell us about Nuneaton? Nuneaton is a small market town. It is most famous for being the birth place and home of famous author, George Eliot who was really a woman called Mary Ann Evans. A local landmark is Mount Judd, which is a large mound of quarry residue that was formed when Judkins Quarry was dug out.

W

Residents of an apartment block at Victoria Co-operative asked for electric gates to stop problems with anti-social behaviour. This request was taken to the Victoria’s committee where it approved and the gates were fitted in May.

They also offer voluntary work and mentoring services, which lots of us at the Nuneaton scheme get involved in. What else can I do in Nuneaton? There is a local cinema and bowling alley which we have been to and was a really good day out. If you are short of money you can go to the museum which is close to the town centre and free.

Mount Judd, Nuneaton.

60 seconds with... What does your job involve? My role involves supporting clients’ needs, supervising activities at the scheme and some housing management, such as making sure repairs are done and carrying out health and safety checks.

You said, we did  e take your complaints and requests seriously, so in every edition of Our House we will explain how we, or your co-operative, are improving things for you.

Where are the best places to eat? Nuneaton has a few bars and clubs that have a good atmosphere. The best chip shop in town is Toppers, which has decent gravy and curry sauce. The Life Church and Salvation Army both offer free hot meals and are good places to socialise and meet new people.

What is your name and what do you do? My name is Sara Hunt and I am a support worker at the Nuneaton scheme.

How long have you been doing your current job and what did you do before? I’ve been at Nuneaton since the beginning of March this year and I previously worked as a Police Community

Support Officer (PCSO) in Nuneaton for five years. What do you enjoy about your job? I enjoy the support side of my job and the resident engagement side. How can I contact you? You can call the Nuneaton scheme on 02476 3473330 or email Nuneaton@fryha.org.uk

Your story

I

n this edition of Your Story, we speak to Redditch Cooperative Homes resident Jenny Mann about why and how she became an artist. How long have you been an artist and what inspired you to become one? I finished a degree in fine art in 2009. I love the freedom of being an artist and the chance to be expressive. How would you describe your work in three words? Varied, ambiguous and evolving. What is your favourite piece of work and why? My favourite piece is a large oil painting. It is an abstract piece depicting a stormy sky and a running fence. It was created by softly blending various shades of blue together and then dragging the paint downwards to give an idea of heavy rain. I love creating art when it has a sense of ambiguity to it and the viewer is able to interpret it as they please. What inspires your work? At the moment, I am working mostly on portrait commissions such as pets, family, celebrity, even cows. I love working on close-ups of faces and capturing the detail in eyes. I work in a variety of media, but I especially love the diversity of oil paint and the simplicity and speed of charcoal.

Was it challenging to set up your own business? A few months back, I was lucky enough to find a unit at a new craft centre just next to Redditch town centre. The overheads are fairly low and I am happy doing all my own web design, framing, canvas-stretching and book-keeping. The hardest part is advertising. With a small budget, knowing where to advertise with successful results is something I am still working on. What advice would you offer people thinking about starting their own business? Be as self-sufficient as possible to cut down any extra costs. How can I find out more about your work? You can visit my website jenny-mann. com or my studio – Mann Made Art, The Old Needle Works, Britten Street, Redditch. If you have an interesting story to share, call Our House Editor Claire Morrall on 0300 111 7000 extension 2340 or email clairemo@ accordgroup.org.uk
