ecosystemic synergies between people, perspectives & projects unleashing human, ecological organisational & societal potentials
Editorial -Welcome to our first edition! This online publication will bring 21st century science and education through the G4 network. G4 also offers insights from our work to inspire all Living labs including public, private and those of the UN. We invite all Living labs to come and participate to our G4 Living Lab meetings. Your insights are our insights we need to synergize and co -create emergence. Our role is to accelerate the global goals, to make the Greater Geneva a Lighthouse region that allows us to reach the Global Goals before 2030. We are about accelerating success to become regenerative for people, planet, profit, prosperity and partnership, co- creating and aligning all societal partners including business, academia, banks and investors. Re positioning Switzerland to create a brighter future. social-IN 3 , is happy and proud to host G4 as a flag project. G4 is indeed aligned with our status, as it is about innovation and incubation in both social and societal matters. social-IN 3 , is a cooperative of research based in Geneva, under the Swiss law and was founded by experts convinced by the new challenge of the Information Age in the 21st century, which will impact and transform our whole Society. Change is happening now, right under our eyes, check and dive deep into the 17 Sustainable Development Goals!
We are involved into that change as actors and subjects. Our group informally dealt with those questions for 15 years with the support of academic structures, were explored and were published. In 2012 we became conscious of the obvious need to adopt a corporate structure to reinforce and illustrate our work, with the addition of a charter. We agreed to form this Swiss private company, as a think tank linking us to the highest level of Technology, Sciences and Social Societies in the Information and Anthropocene Age. We share our beliefs with other international strategic foresight actors and partners ... including G4. Our next societal operational action will be working with all Living Labs, to produce by September 2017 for the second anniversary of SDGs. A Greater Geneva context based roadmap 2030. We plan to organise 3 living labs May, June and September to hand over to Fondation pour Genève and UN SDG Lab. G4 proposes to coordinate Living Labs as a Lab of Labs. Philip Koenig

G4 intention: to make Greater Geneva a Lighthouse prototype for a city region to become regenerative... context, strategy & action Why – we start to recognize the obsolescence of multiple societal value propositions. We are at the end of various life cycles in social, environmental, economic and financial realms, at least since 2008. People: 80 % are emotionally and intellectually disengaged in their work place – public and private sector; Planet: we globally consume an equivalent of 1.6 renewable planetary resources, when planetary boundaries are at 1. In Switzerland we are currently using 3.3; only Geneva voted (Green Economy Initiative) to reduce to 1 by 2030; Profits: an economy cannot be growing indefinitely in a finite world, nor can profits; economy is a pseudoscience; since October 2016, the IMF recognizes that an economy based on indebting governments, businesses and families/individuals is not and cannot be a viable and sustainable model; In a multi-capitalistic accounting system that includes societal & social responsibilities, a corporation could not simply reduce costs by laying people off – it is just pushing the problem over to the public sector. This generates a downward vicious spiral, both social and economically. It is simply ecosystemically incoherent and societally a zero sum game. It cannot generate social, environmental, economic peace and health ! Who ? Peace only 17 countries are without wars / armed conflicts: BE, CND, CH, S, N, D, ISL…; social conflicts come from a lack of ecosystemic, integral thinking and true materiality considerations. Reporting 3.0 and other multicapitalistic accounting systems need to change that. The Geneva financial and banking ecosystem, all major business and economic international organisations, incl. WEF, WBCSD, IISD, etc… UN Global Compact, UNOG SDG Lab, EPFL, Ecole Internationale, as well as the bridge with the local Geneva, the Fondation pour Genève, and then the local public and private sector architecture of Living Labs and the G4 local Lab of Labs, are natural driving forces to embrace a common transformational movement, together with Switzerland. Partnerships current public-private “silos & ego” cultures need to evolve into an ecosystemic participative, inclusive and federal dynamics principles based system, with the neutral independent civil society; the global goal no17 re-empowers civil society , initiators, innovators and early adopters to insure mobilizing
Prosperity – the financial “trickle down effect” rate into the real economy varies between 20-7 % over past 30 years; it creates bigger divides and inequity everywhere; whether we have a bottom approach or a top down – we actually need both – from a true societal 21st c governance perspective, to ensure optimisation and equity. What - education 21 at all ages - continuous learning and improvement via human centric, epigenetics, neurosciences, neurocognitivism, integrating actualized 21st c. sciences - sciences21, wisdom from all great traditions, knowledge of all first nations, and the more and more affordable – getting closer to zero marginal costs - and available – Fab Labs - 21st technologies to ensure local autonomy of drinkable water, healthy bio food and renewable energy - see Stiglitz and Jeremy Rifkin. We can unleash human, organisational and societal potentials by reducing drastically fear and distress factors, increasing human fundamental needs – see Manfred Max Neef – joy, intrinsic motivation, moving into an neurocognitive adaptive mode of functioning – see SEVE, INC, Mindfulness, … Where – our focus and intention is to make the Greater Geneva city/region a SDG lighthouse, connected to other pioneer pilot city/regions on all continents, all connected and acting together as one via the UN SDG lab, at UNOG and other locations. All city regions embracing the ecosystemic multicapitalistic tool Resilience.io seem to be natural candidates, as the equivalent local context based 2030 Roadmap naturally generates the glocal 21st c. governance and asks to address all 16 SDs meta topics. how: our approach systemic societal, architecture of Labs in public and private orgs, right people right orgs / culture in front of VUCA – volatility, uncertainty, complexity, ambiguity - , transformations, transitions and innovation; differentiate people by passion and natural strength and will for design, develop execute
G4 is focused on evolving mindsets supported by 21st c education for all ages to become regenerative for… People, planet & profit: A new economy. Renewed prosperity, peace & partnerships: a wise society. G4 acompanies city-regions on their transformational projects and enables them via Living Labs, Digital Societal Equity, Resilience.io integrated systems platform, with Local & International Greater Geneva, for the world, as a Lighthouse, a Labs of Labs, together with UN SDG Labs for the 2030 Global Goals

CEO - HR testimony: How to leverage high potential employees: High potential is defined as : high empathy, acting for a common greater good & ecosystemic perspective They can tackle SDG complexity, optimise complex systems & problems, co create an inclusive culture. There are very reasons as to why we all go to work, says Richard Bandell CEO Grass Roots Group (GRG). Sure, we could use the money, but it’s more than just that alone. And if, as leaders, we do not recognize and encourage people to meet their full potential we are doing it wrong. Most business leaders have all seen - and shivered at - the stats about employee engagement in the UK. For those of us who haven’t, think about how many people are genuinely engaged in the overall vision of your organisation. Richard imaginatively pointed out that if you compared that to the players on a cricket team, it’s like saying that 3 players are determined to win the game, 4 players aren’t bothered either way and 3 of the team are actively playing for the opposition. It is therefore the responsibility of all leaders to actively recognize, understand and promote the personal aspirations of all individuals. Once they are stimulated to fulfill their highest potential they will become more synchronized with the organisation’s overall vision.
“How can you get them to have an affinity with your aims if you don’t have one with theirs?” Unlocking our intrinsic motivators
lose the hierarchy
How can a business smoothly transition from a hierarchical business model to an adhocracy? Richard revealed all as he talked us through his findings. “The first thing we realised was that culture had become very stagnant, it was a hierarchical and clam like organisation.” Richard determined that when there is a hierarchy people are afraid to step outside of the lines, and that their behaviour is quickly corrected on the occasion that they do. In one example he shared, the reaction of leaders to employees who tried something different was even described as a ’drive-by shooting’! These models are counterproductive as far as employee engagement is concerned. So what do you replace a model like this with? How does an adhocracy add value? When people don’t authentically, genuinely believe that leaders value their aspirations, this causes a huge problem, says Richard. Not just in business, but across all areas within society.
As follows, the organisation’s business model was completely disrupted and a very bold new vision and goal were determined: A vision to inspire people to meet their full potential and a goal to hit a huge financial target that was sky high. Both the vision and goal were established to encourage employees to shoot for the stars, even when it seemed beyond the organisation’s, and indeed their own, capabilities. The new adhocracy model spawned new attitudes, approaches and programmes to really bring the best out of their employees. These included defining behaviours, not values, and introducing a recognition system to boost peer-to-peer awareness, support and value. “Instead of defining a strategy we actually asked people to constantly define the strategy and their own productivity targets... We gave people permission to make mistakes and applauded the effort and bravery that went into doing something different.”
discovering high potentials
GRG also developed a High Potentials Programme designed to discover self-selecting workers who had fuller potentials that were previously being under utilized. Open to all, the new programme was quietly advertised in order to prevent scaring anybody off. Once people had put themselves forward, they were interviewed and a selection of candidates were then invited to attended an assessment day. This included tests, tasks and psychological profiling to explore their personal drivers in more depth. Astonishingly, those 20 individuals are now driving some of the most important change within the company. Richard described the HPs as ‘informal leaders in the business’. The HPs are so pleased for the development opportunity that they are really pushing to meet the company’s new vision and previously ‘unattainable’ goal. It comes to the high potentials in any business, who have access to altruism, empathy and a holistic understanding, to create cross-disciplinary emergence. Have you identified yours? High potentials exist in all organisations. It is our task to find them and, in return, they will solve complex problems, drive coherence and transparency. If HPs from all societal stakeholders can address the Global Goals, they will conceive simple solutions for us all to develop and implement.
