An Irish Folklore Treasury

By John Creedon

A selection of old stories, ways and wisdom from The Schools’ Collection

In this people’s history of Ireland, John Creedon introduces a fascinating collection of stories from the Schools’ Collection. This treasure trove of old stories, ways and wisdom, which could have been lost for ever, was collected by schoolchildren as part of a nationwide project set up in the 1930s to preserve Irish folklore.

Published here for the first time, this ‘best of’ selection includes chapters on ghost stories, agriculture, forgotten trades, schooling and pastimes. The result is an incredible arc of folk history that tells us about ourselves and how we lived long ago.

GAA NEWS

Kerry Hurling:

Ballyduff was represented on all Kerry teams at the weekend. Jake Segal, Reece O’Connor and Shay Murphy were on the Celtic Challenge Cup that lost to Dublin in Portlaoise on Good Friday.

Jayden Condon, Adam Lynch, Gavin Murphy and Calum Carey- Sheehy were on the Minor panel that lost at the same venue on Friday

On Saturday the Kerry Senior hurling team made the long journey to Down to take on the locals in Round 1 of the Joe McDonagh Cup and came away with a twelve point victory, 1 – 26 to 1 – 14. Ballyduff was represented by Eoin Ross, who gave a “Man of the Match” performance at midfield and Kyle O’Connor. It’s nice to see Darragh Slattery get his place on the subs bench as he continues his rehabilitation from his cruciate injury last year. Kerry are at home to Carlow on this Sunday in Austin Stack Park at 2pm in Round 2 of the competition.

Club Hurling & Football:

On the local front our Senior teams had mixed luck at the weekend on Friday evening Ballyduff were hosts to Ballyheigue in the North Kerry Senior Hurling League. Both teams were very much under strength with Ballyduff winning on the score line Ballyduff 0–15 Ballyheigue 0 – 9.

On Sunday our Senior football team continued to fail to achieve a victory after their Round 3 game in the County Senior Football League with Cordal ended in a draw. After three rounds it leaves us with two draws and a loss of two points in the other game. Our next outing is away to Castlegregory on Sunday April 23rd.

LADY’S

Walk Hurling

Lady’s Walk 1 – 11 Crotta 0 – 14.

The Walkers had their first game of 2023 last Wednesday evening when they took on Crotta. “The Walkers” had a very young team on duty with 5 players making their Walkers debut. The first half was a very tight affair with both teams finding their feet. With a few minutes remaining the Walkers were trailing by 4 points. The team never gave up and when Killan Boyle scored a goal from a free the next ball was vital and following some good team play the walkers got the point to tie the game and they were unlucky not to claim the win. It was a great display from a very young team. The Walkers next outing is on Wednesday the April 18th away to Rathmore.
