TARBERT NEWS

Email; tarbertnews@outlook.com or telephone Patrick Lynch at 068/ 36117 on or before 7pm Sunday.

DEATHS

The death took place of Thomas Dillane, Doonard Upper, Tarbert. Thomas who was aged 81 died after a short illness at University Hospital Kerry, Tralee on Thursday 30 March. He reposed at home on Sunday and his funeral took place on Monday 3 April. A large guard of honour comprising younger and older members of Tarbert CCE and Tarbert PTAA met the cortege at Tieraclea Park and escorted the remains to St Mary’s Church, Tarbert. The Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fathers Michael Hussey, John O’Connor and Philip O’Connell. The chief cantor was his next-door neighbour James Enright. His son Thomas spoke of his witty sense of humour, his love of Kerry football, traditional music, animals and gardening. Patrick Lynch spoke of his involvement with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann, the Tarbert Pioneer Marching Band and his commitment to Irish music and culture from the 1970’s. After Mass his remains were removed to the adjoining St Mary’s New Cemetery where friend and fellow musician, Pete Kiely played ‘Roisin Dubh’ the theme from Mise Eire. There was a nice turnout of younger musicians from the Ballylongford / Tarbert Branch of CCE resplendent in their new uniform jackets. Thomas would have been proud that his legacy and love of traditional Irish music was being carried on by the current generation.

Thomas was an only child born to Thomas and Christina Dillane (née Maher) in Doonard Upper, Tarbert. He completed his Secondary School education at St Ita’s College, Tarbert and worked the family farm. He had a keen ear for music and was self taught on the accordeon and concert flute. With other dedicated volunteers he helped set up a branch of CCE in Tarbert and organised teachers to provide classes in traditional music, Irish set and step dancing for young and old in the Community Centre. As Chairman of the branch he directed the running of three County Fleadhanna Cheol in Tarbert in the 1990’s.

A very unassuming and understated individual he gave freely of his time and advice to younger musicians. He was helpful in so many ways, whether in choosing an instrument, individual tuition, tuning an instrument or general encouragement . He coached individual players to win All Ireland honours at All ireland Fleadh Cheols in various categories and age groups. He passed on this love of music to his own two children Thomas and Deirdre. Running a successful Farm Guest House with his wife Mary for many years he enjoyed entertaining guests every night. In recent years he enjoyed visiting various hostelries in North Kerry and West Limerick where in the company of other musicians they could play their favourite music. Every New Year’s Eve he led the musicians in a tradition unique to Tarbert in marching through the village to beat out the Old Year and ring in the New Year. Truly, he was one of Nature’s gentlemen and the gentlest of men.

Sympathy of the community is extended to his wife Mary, son Thomas, daughter Deidre, daughter-in-law Grainne, son-in-law Iain, grandchildren, sister-in-law Carole, her husband John, extended family, relatives, neighbours, friends and many admirers. Codladh sámh, a Thomás, leaba i measc na naomh go raibh agat.

Sympathy also to Jer Foley, Doonard on the recent death of his father, Thomas Foley, Lartigue Village, Listowel and formerly of Gortdromasillihy, Moyvane who died on 6 April. Requiem Mass took place in the Church of the Assumption, Moyvane on Easter Monday 10 April followed by burial in Ahavoher Cemetery, Moyvane.

EASTER CEREMONIES

There was no celebration of Holy Thursday and Good Friday Ceremonies in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert. Many parishioners attended Good Friday celebration of the Lord’s Passion in the Church of St Michael the Archangel, Ballylongford. The Easter Vigil and the celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection took place in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert on Holy Saturday and Easter Sunday. Fr John spoke of the Easter Garden in the Sanctuary with the figures of the Risen Christ and the two Marys present on the morning of the Resurrection. The impressive large backdrop painting of the Risen Christ by Alan Higgins and the floral arrangements of white and yellow daffodils signified new life and the coming of Spring. St Mary’s Choir rendered the Easter liturgical hymns. Sacristan James had a supply of bottles of blessed Holy Water available for distribution in the Church. Beannachtaí na Féile Cásca to all our parishioners at home and abroad.

CÚRSAI CURSALÁ

Fogra from Tomás; Sometimes in all aspects of sport one has to go to the archives for information. In the case of ‘Coursing Greyhound of the Year’, through the decades, there is no need. The names of these dogs are embellished in our memory. This accolade was earned by great dogs like ‘Move on Swanky’,’Master Myles’, ‘Swanky Star’, ‘Multibet’, and many more. To received the title ‘Coursing Greyhound of the Year’ is the greatest award the sport can bestow on a greyhound. For the record, John Prendiville’s renowned stud dog ‘Swanky Pa’ holds the unique distinction of being the only sire of ‘Track Dog of the Year’ and ‘Coursing Dog of the Year’ in the same year. It was 1974 the ‘Courising Dog of the Year’ was Rory Ryan’s ‘Move on Swanky’ and the ‘Track Dog of the Year ‘ was Larry and Helen Kelly’s ‘Waiting to Work’.

‘Express Razor’ has been awarded the title of ‘Coursing Greyhound of the Year 2022/2023’. Congratulations once again to Tom, Patricia, Chris, Joe and the Saleen team who worked so hard through the season.

The Irish Coursing Club hosts a social every year to mark the occasion. The Rose Hotel, Tralee is the venue on the Saturday night of the May Bank Holiday weekend. Tickets are available from the Irish Coursing Club, Davis Road, Clonmel or from Conor Foley at 086/ 8830095.

The O’Connor family would appreciate as many people as possible from the parish to celebrate this wonderful social occasion with them.

ASTRO TURF PITCH & BALLWALL FACILITY

Last Sunday was another important milestone in the development of the facilities at Hermitage Park.

The Official Opening of the Community AstroTurf pitch and Ballwall facility marked the culmination of a significant development which was initially discussed in late 2020 and was set in train in January 2021 with the formation of a Development Committee.

On Sunday, the Minister for Education, Norma Foley, who wholeheartedly supported the project from the beginning, cut the ribbon to formally open the facility, spoke of her admiration for the new facility and the benefits which it will bring to all the community.

She expressed her pleasure in being able to assist in the provision of Sports Capital Funding which was vital to enable the project to proceed.

John Stack, the Chairman of NEWKD / Leader who also provided substantial financial support, spoke of the importance of supporting community initiatives. Patrick O’ Sullivan, Chairman of Coiste Chontae Chiarraí; Liam Lynch, Vice Chairman of the Coiste and Liam Ross, Hurling Officer were in attendance to acknowledge the financial assistance received from the Munster Council of Cumann Luthcleas Gael.

Club Chairman John McElligott introduced the various speakers while Fergus Fitzmaurice, the Chairman of the Development Committee, in his address, outlined how the whole process evolved from an idea and a design to becoming the fine facility that will enhance the physical and mental wellbeing of everyone in the community.

He expressed the club’s gratitude to the people of the parish for their generous support of the Car Raffle which provided the initial impetus to proceed with the project and he thanked the government agencies on both a national and local level for the funding received as well as the Munster Council for their financial assistance. Clann Credo’s provision of credit facilities was acknowledged as being of tremendous benefit during the project.

Fergus also thanked the Daughton Brothers for their work in stripping the sod/soil and PST who constructed the Ball-Wall and AstroTurf pitch.

Fr. Anthony O’ Sullivan in his customary low-key fashion blessed the new facility before everyone enjoyed a chat, a cup of tea and some light refreshments thanks to the Ladies’ committee .

Beale Gaa

A disappointing performance by Beale seniors on Sunday saw us lose our second County League game. This was always going to be a tough test, especially with a few regular faces missing. Playing conditions were ideal at Mountcoal’s newly refurbished pitch and the heavy rain held off for most of the game. Overall, it was a rather shaky performance with things not going to plan for us. While our backs defended well, when we got our running game going, our moves often broke down with many turnovers at pivotal stages of play. We were first to hit our stride and opened the scoring with two points from frees before Senans got off the mark. Our opponents hit back and equalised before raising the green flag in the fifteenth minute. We tried hard but all too often there was a lack of movement when pushing forward. When we made an opening, very often we could not seem to find the finish. The teams exchanged points and Senans were a goal to the good at the interval, 0-4 to 1-4. When half time came, the feeling amongst supporters was that we might show a little more in the second half. Despite some better patches of play, it wasn’t translated to the scoreboard. The teams again exchanged points on the changeover before Senans went ahead by five points going into the final quarter. We pulled them back to within three but, try as we might, we failed to break that barrier.

The game lacked pace and excitement for the most part. However, in a pulsating finale, we tried hard to get that elusive goal. We found some spirit and mounted a number of attacks, lobbing balls into the square as the game came to life. Regrettably, we yielded nothing from these attacks. We could not convert the chances that we created and remained a goal adrift at the long whistle, 0-7 to 1-7.

Beale team lined out as: Joe Downey, Johnny O’Sullivan, John Griffin, Joe Finch, Fionnán Toomey, Phillie Blake, Diarmuid O’Mahony (0-1), Neilus Mulvihill, Conor Toomey, Barry O’Neill, Callum McSweeney (0-1), Shane O’Connor, Ian Mannix (0-4(4f)) and Eric Daly (0-1). Substitutes: Podge Holly for John Griffin, Jack Mallon for Shane O’Connor and Seân Maloney for Daithí Toomey. The day ended as it began, and we stand still on two points from three games. With the return of some key players, we hope to get back to winning ways when we meet Dr Crokes B in Ballybunion in two weeks’ time.

We await details of the County Junior Championship. Beale seniors travel to Renard for our first round game. Other teams in our group are Knocknagoshel and Kilgarvan. Beale juniors play Knockanure in the first round of the North Kerry League, Division 4. Details to be confirmed.

This week’s Beale Lotto took place on Bank Holiday Monday night in The Railway Bar. Numbers drawn were 8, 12, 14 and 21. The Lotto jackpot was not won and there were three Match-3 winners, Jacky Pearse, Alice Kelly and Tommy Heaphy, who won €35 each. The winner of 5 Free tickets was Jack Mallon. Next week’s lotto jackpot is €3,150. Draw takes place on Sunday night in JD’s at 9 o’clock. A huge ‘míle buíochas’ to everyone who supports and promotes the Beale Lotto. Tickets, €2 each or 3 for a fiver, may be bought online and are available in Joyce’s Newsagents and in the local pubs. Terms and conditions apply.

Best of luck to the competitors and their mentors representing Beale GAA Club in the County Semi-finals of Scór na bPáistí in Moyvane on Sunday.

Beale GAA Club extends sincere sympathies to the Quane family on the recent passing of Pat Joe. A dedicated footballer, Pat Joe lined out for St Patrick’s club in the late 1960s and early 1970s. He also played in local tournaments and carnivals which were popular at that time, and he played with the Beale team in the Parish League.

Pat Joe was a proud man when his daughters, Ciara, Niamh and Nonie brought glory to Kilconly National School in the early noughties. 2001 was a memorable year for the family as Kilconly teams were crowned North Kerry champions and County champions. After a long illness, bravely borne, Pat Joe passed to his eternal reward a few weeks ago. Ar dheis Dé gurb a anam dhíl.

Ballybunion Golf Club

Men’s Medal I Competition Sponsored by Jim O’Flynn (Scratch Cup Qualifier) –Old Course – Friday 7th April 2023 was up. However, it was not over yet and our lads scored the winning point two minutes into injury time to seal the win and collect two valuable league points. Final score Finuge 1-10 to Duagh’s 1-09. This win puts Finuge on top of division five with two wins and one draw, however there is a back game yet to be played that could change that landscape. Next week is a break week and the action resumes with a home game to Austin Stacks B.

MINORS: Into the league semi-final, our minor team had to make the trip to Fossa to see who would make the final. After a tight and exciting first half our boys held a slight advantage on the score Finuge 1-04 to Fossa’s 0-06. Gradually as the second half wore on, our boys built on that lead and would run out winners in the end on the scoreline Finuge 1-15 to Fossa’s 0-11. It is great to see this really young team able to mix it with older teams and be able to pull off results like this! They are now into the final of the Keanes Supervalu of Killorglin league where they play Firies who overcame Castlegregory after a replay - details tbc.

U15: Unfortunately, Spa were unable to fulfil the fixture last week and so the lads had no game. This week they play Knocknagoshel/Brosna on Wednesday evening the 12th in Knocknagoshel.

Finuge Gaa

SENIOR: Round three of the Credit Union sponsored county league saw our senior team make the short trip to Duagh on Sunday. The weather was rapidly deteriorating and a stiff fresh breeze meant conditions were never going to be ideal for football. Both teams scored a goal in the opening half and it was the home side that went in leading on the scoreline Duagh 1-06 to Finuge’s 1-02. The second half saw our boys work their way into a more advantageous position and with four minutes left on the clock finally drew level. They went a point up with two minutes to go but Duagh would level it as normal time

U13: On Good Friday the boys had a round 3 away trip to Annascaul/Lispole, played in Lispole. A very open and entertaining game saw the teams well matched at halftime where the home side led by one point. A purple patch for the West Kerry lads at the start of the second half saw them open a gap but our lads got stuck in and pulled it back. In the end it was not going to be enough however and the final score stood at Finuge 5-04 to Annascaul/Lispole’s 5-09. The boys fielded a very young team on the day due to unavailability of some U13s and so this was a good performance and even had plenty chances to be closer. Next up is an away game to Ballymac this Sunday 16th.

U11: The team began their Go Games campaign with a home game to Lispole last Thursday. This was a really good game and everyone played really solid with some very well taken scores. The team travel to Castlegregory this week on Thursday the 13th to play their next game - good luck to all. Training continues on Tuesday evenings.

U9: The team had their first outing on Sunday with a Monster blitz, held in Duagh. The team played Moyvane, Ballyduff and Knocknagoshel. The coaches were really happy with everyone’s performances and are encouraging all to practise at home! This week the focus turns to the Go Games series and the first game with our neighbours Listowel. This game will be played in Listowel this Thursday the 13th of April - best of luck to the team. Other teams in Group G are Clounmacon, Tarbert, Beale, Bally/Asdee.

U7: The first of the games commence for the U7s on the 8th of May when our super troopers travel to Tarbert! The best of luck to all our boys and girls involved - enjoy the experience. Training continues at Lixnaw astro pitch Monday evenings from 6:30-7:30pm. Anyone interested in playing football at this age are very welcome to make contact with a club officer for more information. Please follow us on social media for updates.

MEMBERSHIP is overdue by all members old and new for 2023. Please reach out to your respective manager, if on a team. Thank you for your continued support, it is greatly appreciated by the club.

Kerry Petroleum Club Championship 2023: Our Senior footballers will once again take part in the Kerry Petroleum Club Championship which are due to get underway on the weekend of Saturday/Sunday July22/23rd; Senior, Intermediate, Junior Premier and Junior. Asdee will be competing in Group 3 of the Junior Championship along with Duagh, Cordal and Sneem/Derrynane. The format will be one home game, one away and one neutral.

Asdee have fared ok in the Junior Championship despite not moving up to a higher grade and for the weaker teams who would fail to qualify; then they will go down to a Novice grade; and here certainly Asdee had a roller coaster year in 2013 when they exceeded all expectations by winning the Munster Junior “B” Cup defeating Charleville of Cork at Knockaderry County Limerick by 0-9 to 1-5 on Saturday March 16th.The remaining Junior Championship groups consist of Group 1, Tarbert, Scartaglen, Finuge ,Moyvane, Group 2, Knocknagoshel, Beale, Kilgarvan, Renard, Group 4, Lispole, Valentia, St. Michaels Foilmore, Moyvane. Certainly, an extremely tough championship to predict winners as to who will get promoted to the Junior Premier or drop down to the Novice grade.

County Minor Football League Division 2 Semi Final Result and Match Report Monday 3rd April.

Listowel Emmets 2-11, Tarbert GAA Club 3-09.

Tarbert U17s had a hard-fought one point victory over near neighbours, Listowel in the Co. League Div 2 semi-final on a scoreline of 3-09 to 2-11. This game was played in Listowel in front of a large crowd who were entertained by 2 evenly matched teams. This was an enthralling contest, played in a very sporting manner and gave a great account of the high standard of football being played in North Kerry.

Playing against a strong wind in the first half, Tarbert had to work very hard to try to contain the Listowel attack and keep in touch on the scoreboard. Listowel struck first and went into a 2 point lead but Tarbert responded with a point from a free from Caolam Moriarty.

Listowel scored 2 more points, but David Mulvihill ran the length of the pitch to score from play to respond for the away side.

Listowel again scored 2 more points before Caolam Moriarty responded with another pointed free. Paudie Finucane and Shaun Wren scored 2 points from play for Tarbert, but Listowel scored 1-01 before half time to leave the score at 1-07 to 0-05 in favour of Listowel.

Playing with the wind in the second half, Tarbert were rocked back on their heels when Listowel goaled early in the hald to leave 8 points between the sides.

Shaun Wren drove at the heart of the Listowel defence and was pulled down for a penalty, which was converted by Caolam Moriarty to again leave 5 points between the sides. Caolam Moriarty scored from play to reduce the deficit to 4, but Listowel responded with a point of their own.

Michael Coolahan challenged for a high ball into the square and it broke to Tadhg O Connell who had a shot on goal blocked which broke to Michael Coolahan who finished to the net to leave 2 points between the sides. Listowel again struck with a point of their own, but Caolam Moriarty pointed a monster free from the 45 off his hands to leave 2 points between the sides. Michael Coolahan drifted in behind the Listowel defence and finished to the roof of the net after he was picked out with a pinpoint pass from Shaun Wren to put Tarbert a point up. A pointed free from Paudie Finucane put Tarbert 2 up but Listowel responded with a pointed free to leave the minimum between the sides.

Heroic defence from the Tarbert expertly marshalled by Conor Egan kept Listowel at bay to keep Tarbert a point ahead when the final whistle sounded. Aaron White in goals was a steadying influence on the team with accuracy off the tee with his kickouts and was solid under the high ball.

In defence, Thady Mulvihill, Shane Stack, Lee Moriarty and Dylan Kennedy worked tirelessly, and in attack Tadgh O’Connell, Mikey Carmody, Donal Finucane and Adam Enright were constantly linking the play from defence to attack to create scoring opportunities for the other forwards.

A Div 2 Co. League final against Kilcummin on Monday 10th April, who defeated Tarbert in the group phase of the Co. League is the prize of the semifinal victory but with a similar heart and hard work, the challenge is not insurmountable and details of the fixture will follow in the coming days.

Team: Aaron White, Thady Mulvihill, David Mulvihill (0-01), Shane Stack, Dylan Kennedy, Conor Egan, Lee Moriarty, Paudie Finucane (0-02), Michael Coolahan (2-00), Donal Finucane, Shaun Wren (0-01), Mikey Carmody, Adam Enright, Caolam Moriarty (1-05), Tadgh O’Connell, Jack Walsh.

County Senior Football League Division 4 Result: Tarbert 0- 9 St. Michael’s Foilmore 1-7.

Tarbert lost two valuable county league points following a defeat to St. Michael’s Foilmore last Saturday evening in Shannon Park. Playing against a strong wind in the first half Tarbert seemed to be in control of the game until a wayward pass resulted in St Michael Foilmore scoring the only goal of the match twenty minutes into the first half leaving Foilmore lead at half time on a scoreline of 1-3 to 0-2.

Tarbert’s Andrew Doherty won a free to leave three between the sides early in the second half and another point by Finbarr Carrig reduced the margin to two after ten minutes. Foilmore however responded to Tarbert’s score and when substitute Conor Breen scored an excellent point to leave only one between the teams on a scoreline of 1-7 to 0-9 entering the final minutes a draw was seemed on the cards . A late free went wide from the boot of Doherty was Tarbert’s last chance to level matters in a game that Tarbert should have got a result out of.

Team : P. Carmody, D O’Connor, K. Enright, J. Healy, G. Breen, S.Enright, D. Wren, M. Normile, M. Heaphy, F. Carrig, C. Langan, J. Sheehan, A. Doherty, P. O’Connell, D. Foley Subs D, Stack for Langan (inj,) J. Coolahan for Foley, C. Breen for O’Connell, P. O’Callaghan for Sheehan, P. Carrig for Breen, T. Finucane, D. Heaphy, C. Breen, B. Wren.
