‘SNL’ HITS THE NOSE ON MUELLER REPORT

When I saw the cold open title on YouTube for the latest episode of “Saturday Night Live,” I was wondering how the show would tackle the situation with Robert Mueller. In the thumbnail I saw

Robert De Niro, an outspoken critic of the president (in the lightest of terms), play Mueller – special counsel in the Trump-Russia investigation – with a strong facial resemblance to the man himself.

This cold open is an accurate portrayal of what the Russia probe concluded: There was no collusion, but that doesn’t completely exonerate the president from any crimes that are being investigated – of which there could be plenty.

There are three different sides to the Mueller conclusion: the full report; U.S Attorney General William Barr’s summary report to Congress; and the tweets from Trump that declare a full innocence and victory.

However, just like the SNL skit and Mueller himself said, Donald

Trump isn’t innocent, or immune to potential investigations from the state of New York over, for instance, actual finance crimes.

The problem we are seeing is that some people on the liberal news outlets are still riding on the collusion train and some, like Trump, are using this summary letter from Barr as a final stake for victory. That’s not to say that this conclusion isn’t going to give Trump a momentous boost for the 2020 election campaign, but this only one major event in a long series of dominoes.

Most importantly to recognize, the declaration of “victory” from the Russia probe contradicts the entire witch hunt narrative and the resentment towards Mueller. One

moment the special counsel is some Democratic plot to undermine the president; in the next, he’s an admirable person. It doesn’t make sense.

I have to admit, even I had doubts about Trump and Russia, or at least the more extreme theories floating out there. I never believed that Trump was a puppet propped up by the Russian government; that sounds more like a projection of our government’s experience with “establishing democracy” in foreign countries. I thought the extent of the Russian collusion was shady business dealings with oligarchs that Trump’s cabinet staff were involved in – and even that sounds like farce, in theory.

From what we learned in the

Michael Cohen (Trump’s former personal attorney) hearing before Congress, the president has done a lot things that are illegal in the business world and those problems will follow him after his presidency.

You can’t have dozens of your staff investigated and indicted for finance crimes connected to you and act like you’re completely innocent.

Not only is it a lie to mislead the public on the investigation, but it’s also suspicious to celebrate your initial innocence and ignore the full legal statement.

So while SNL borders on satire, and a little bit of the truth when it comes to Trump, it couldn’t have gotten it any more spot-on when it comes to the parallels of the Russian probe conclusion than it did.

MHCC STUDENTS VISIT OXFORD IN UK Chloe Collins the advocate

From March 11-16, three Mt. Hood students represented MHCC at Oxford University, and here is the tea – that is, the inside story of their British trip.

Joe Davis and Aye Chan May were selected to attend the Oxford Consortium on Human Rights, and were joined by their classmate, Solaman Ibe. The three students come from very different backgrounds and brought an element of diversity to the group.

At the seminar, students from around the United States form groups and create presentations about human rights issues in their particular area. This year’s group of attendees was the third group from MHCC to attend.

Since the first group of Mt.

Hood students attended in 2017, Janet Campbell, MHCC political science instructor, has been involved in selecting the attendees.

She accompanied the selected students as an adviser both in 2018 and this year.

Campbell said opportunities such as this are important to students because it allows them to see that they, too, can become whatever they desire. The goals they want to reach sometimes seem unattainable, and having the chance to meet others who met their goals – in a setting such as the Oxford Consortium – can be impactful and inspiring.

Currently, the process for being selected is for an MHCC student to be recommended by a teacher, and then Campbell reaches out to that individual. In the future, she would like to make a student application

available online and allow for teacher recommendations, rather than nominations.

In order to be considered, Mt. Hood students must be at least 18 years of age, and must have a good academic record. A faculty member must recommend them, and they must submit a short essay explaining why they want to attend.

Campbell primarily bases her selection on the essay portion of the application, and looks forward to continuing the program.

Obtaining funding for the March trip was no easy feat as the request for travel was not approved until December. Campbell will ask for Social Science department support to continue the program, as the MHCC Foundation “does not wish to consistently fund it,” she said.

STUDENTS INVOLVED IN HUB PROJECT

Jennifer Salazar the advocate MHCC staff and faculty gather every other week to discuss Mt. Hood’s new renovation project, the Student HUB. John Hamblin, executive dean of Student Development for MHCC, leads the meetings and said construction for the HUB, which is now fully funded, will begin April 15.

The goal for the HUB – not an acronym, but all capital letters, it’s been decided – is to create a central place for orientation on topics and tasks new students need the most help with, while making it a space where they feel welcome.

Incoming students will be able to ask questions about financial aid and accessible education services, and receive academic advising in the HUB. The HUB will be located where Student Services now operates, inside Building 12. Financial Aid will be to the left (north) of the present lobby area, where the business offices are currently.

on the right/south side, will not be moved. The MHCC business offices will be moved to Room 50 in the Main Mall basement, below the Student Union.

This four-phase project will proceed as follows, said Hamblin: First, construction of the business offices as well as temporarily “surge space” for other affected departments; second, the HUB’s core (the orientation center) will be renovated; then, Financial Aid, and finally, Advising, will be overhauled.

As construction begins, the college is being cautious to make sure it won’t create any new issues with bouncing students around to different parts of campus to find things in new locations too far from where they were previously located, such as needing a document from the business offices through Financial Aid or Advising. The college is also working to make sure staff fully understand the changes that impact them and timelines for their departments, so they continue to feel supported during the renovations.

companies that will be working on the Student HUB. On March 19, students had the opportunity to visit Hue in downtown Gresham to go over designs and ideas for the HUB. Hamblin said the group had some great takeaways: Students suggested that counters in the Financial Aid area for filling out paperwork be moved slightly to a more private area. They also suggested that while the furniture be comfortable and welcoming, a clear distinction should be made between these being productive meeting spaces, versus a hangout area for students. The students also suggested installing charging stations throughout the HUB. Since spring and summer are the least busy periods at Mt. Hood, construction will take place during this time. The Student HUB is fully funded by the MHCC Foundation.

Completion is set to be done by Aug. 15, depending on the progress made by contractors.

ASG ELECTIONS From noon to 2 p.m. on April 8 and 9, students can meet the candidates running for 2019-20 Associated Student Government president and vice president, in the Main Mall. On April 10, from noon to 2 p.m., the candidates will present their platforms in the Main Mall. Polls for the election will open at 12:01 a.m. on April 23 and close at 11:59 p.m. on the 24th. SPRING CAREER FAIR The fair runs 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Vista Dining Hall on Friday, April 15. All current MHCC students, alumni and community members may look for employment opportunities and internships, or just explore what other career choices are available. This is an opportunity to speak to experts in numerous fields.

EAST MULTNOMAH COUNTY’S ECONOMY Panelists will discuss the challenges and opportunities for attracting and retaining jobs in East Multnomah County.

Hosted by the City Club of Portland, the event runs 6 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, April 9, in the College Theatre at MHCC. Light refreshments will be served.

SPRING CLUB FAIR Held in the Student Union from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on April 1516, this gives students a great opportunity to learn more about the clubs offered at MHCC and ways to become more involved.

A representative from each club will be there to answer questions.

VOICES HEARD: MHCC BOARD RESCINDS DE Cassie Wilson the advocate

A

fter much outcry from KMHD listeners, donors, and even city and state government officials, the MHCC District Board of Education voted on March 20 to keep the college’s FM station in operation at Oregon Public Broadcasting (OPB) for the next five years – reversing a proposed return to the Mt. Hood campus.

Originally the board voted on Jan. 16 to terminate the college’s current agreement with OPB, which was up for an automatic five-year renewal following its initial 10-year term, which ends Aug. 10. Within its January motion, the board instructed MHCC President Lisa Skari to negotiate a new, two-year contract with OPB with the intent to bring the station back to Gresham at the contract’s end.

An on-campus KMHD strategic planning committee created a roadmap for what it would look like if KMHD was abruptly moved back to the college this year if OPB didn’t agree to the two-year contract. This plan outlined items such as equipment repairs, costs, and staffing structure.

Meantime, Steve Bass, OPB President and CEO, sent a letter to Skari explaining that OPB is currently under renovation, including creating new studio space for KMHD as its current studio space is being repurposed. Bass wrote that by April 1, either the current fiveyear extension or a new agreement would need to be in place, or the college would need to take back KMHD by Aug. 10.

MAKING WAVES Bass also sent a letter to KMHD members to inform them of the Mt. Hood board’s January

decision and encouraged listeners to share their thoughts with the board. This resulted in hundreds of incoming emails, which the Advocate accessed through a recent public records request to the college.

Folks wrote in from all across the U.S. The large majority live in Portland, but some dedicated online listeners from New York, Virginia, Massachusetts, Texas, and other states also responded. So did previous and current KMHD volunteers and staff, as well as MHCC alumni. Most who wrote urged the college to keep the station with OPB, threatening to revoke their funding (donations) if anything were to change. Others didn’t necessarily care where the station landed, so long as the programming remained professional, diverse – and jazz-oriented.

Most notably, Oregon state House of Representatives members Jeff Reardon, D-Happy Valley (who is married to MHCC board member Annette Mattson, who voted against KMHD’s return to Mt. Hood), and Diego Hernandez, D-East Portland, emailed the MHCC board.

Reardon wrote, “To be very clear, I believe that making a financially risky decision on a station that serves very few students looks completely irresponsible. You are making it very easy for the K12 supporters to ignore the needs of the community colleges. Your actions make it even more difficult to advocate for your funding and to support local control.”

Hernandez wrote that he supports listening to student voices, but based on how he’s seen the process publicly unfold, he worried that, “Making this decision hastily could dramatically undermine the station. Nobody would benefit in that scenario.” He also offered

to sit down with OPB and the MHCC board to work together on a path that would support everyone’s needs.

In addition, Jamie Dunphy, senior policy director for Portland City Commissioner Nick Fish, wrote to say that Fish is a regular KMHD listener and wanted to look further into why the board went against Skari’s recommendation to renew the OPB contract. Fish also offered to assist if he could do anything to “help right the ship and ensure KMHD continues serving the Portland area.”

On top of the individual comments to the board, a petition was created by Barra Brown, musician and community member, whose music has been played on KMHD. The petition demanded MHCC to renew the OPB contract

to preserve KMHD as it exists now. The online petition gained 1,137 signatures. Brown said the local jazz music scene has greatly benefited from KMHD’s current iteration, and hopes that MHCC and OPB can work out a solid plan that supports musicians and listeners, as well as Mt. Hood students.

During both the February and March board meetings at MHCC, 13 to 14 people spoke passionately during public input sessions on KMHD, most of whom urged the board keep the station at OPB. MOVING FORWARD Facing that community pressure and a lack of solid funding, Diane McKeel, chair of the MHCC Board, began the KMHD portion of the March 20 meeting by acknowledging the

On March 20 the MHCC District Board of Education held a formal meeting in the Town & Gown Room, following a special faculty tenure reception in the adjacent Jazz Café.

The board took action on various items including faculty tenure recommendations and sabbatical requests, as well as tuition and student fee increases.

The final decision of the evening regarded KMHD, MHCC’s FM radio station, which has been operated by Oregon Public Broadcasting for the past 10 years. The Board rescinded its motion from the Jan. 16 meeting to grant OPB a two-year contract extension accommodating its use of PA G E 4

the college’s radio station license. The board then voted to instruct Mt. Hood President Lisa Skari to work with OPB on a five-year contract extension, with modifications. The motion also retained the college’s right to broadcast on the sub-frequency channel known as KMHD2, an online streaming station used by broadcasting students. TUITION The Board approved an $8 (8%) instate tuition increase, a $17 (8%) outof-state tuition increase, and a $7 (3%) international tuition increase, resulting in per-credit hour tuition rates of $115, $233 and $243 for in-state, out-of-state, and international students, respectively.

(The in-state tuition rates beyond 18 credits in a quarter (term) is $57.50 per

credit; out-of-state and international students must pay the full amount, no matter the number of credits taken.)

The overall operating budget for the college is due to be approved by the Board this month (April), with funding cutbacks to several departments and other expenditures certain to be made.

FEE CHANGES The Board approved a student activity fee increase of 25 cents per credit hour (now $4.25 per credit hour, total), and terminated certain fees no longer being sold in areas such as the Aquatic Center. Some course fees and test fees were adjusted as well.

When asked why the student activity fee was increased, Director of Student Life and Civic Engagement, Doctor Abio Ayelia explained that Mt. Hood has been undercharging for student

feedback from the past couple months, and the additional information the board learned about KMHD’s potential return to campus.

McKeel said, “Hearing the public input, receiving additional clarification, and better understanding the financial implications to the college, is there a motion to reconsider our prior action?”

Board Vice Chair Jim Zordich motioned to rescind the January decision to grant OPB a two-year contract extension accommodating its use of the college’s radio station license. The motion was approved 4-2, with Tamie Arnold and Kenney Polson as the two “nays.”

The board then motioned to instruct Skari to negotiate a new five-year agreement with OPB. That motion was approved 5-1, with

Polson as the one nay. That decision met OPB’s April 1 negotiation deadline, since KMHD will stay put another five years OPB can proceed with renovations.

As for the terms of a new agreement, the college’s KMHD planning committee created a bullet-point list of guidelines and ideas for Skari to use in the negotiation process. Included are things such as stronger co-branding; marketing of MHCC performing arts events; and more opportunities for music and broadcasting students at Mt. Hood. How these things come into fruition in the new agreement remain to be seen as discussions and negotiations take place.

Following the March 20 decision, JD Kiggins, MHCC broadcasting instructor,

voiced optimism over a new agreement. He said, “I’m sure that OPB is on board with working with us and I really do want to explore more opportunities for East County, arts, culture... learning opportunities and perhaps some directions we can go that we haven’t thought of yet.”

Bass said he was particularly moved by hearing how important KMHD is to its listeners. “Listening to the people talk about how meaningful the service is to them and knowing that there are thousands more out there that were going to, together, kind of keep this resource going forward and making a big difference in people’s lives, I think is spectacular,” he said.

IN THE STUDIOS Current KMHD employees are excited about moving into newly renovated space just across the hall from their current studio in OPB’s building, which lies on Southwest Macadam Avenue near the Sellwood Bridge.

The Advocate was given a tour on March 29, by Bass, Matt Fleeger, KMHD program director, and Lynne Clendenin, vice president of programming.

Actually, the KMHD studios don’t take up much space. There’s a huge collection of CDs, as well as vinyl records. The vinyl collection is specifically rare or out-of-print records of albums that haven’t been digitized, something that makes KMHD unique because it’s often the only place jazz fans can hear those albums.

activities compared to other community colleges in Oregon. Student activities also had lost roughly $90,000 this year due to enrollment being down 5 percent.

Enrollment is expected to potentially be down by 8 percent, so the fee will accommodate for the loss in revenue this year and prepare student activities for further potential losses next year.

Sabbatical leaves are granted for various purposes, some of which include preparing a new course for the college, enrolling in studies or training

programs and/or to complete the requirements for a degree or certificate, and to learn new methodologies related to the faculty member’s instructional area, program, or discipline. Upon returning to duty, each faculty member reports on the work completed during the professional leave and how it applies to his/her college assignments.

Another action item on the agenda was approval of a vendor to rebuild the college stadium bleachers. The administration recommended awarding the contract to Bleachers International Inc., and the Board concurred. The work should be completed by about Aug. 31 at a cost of approximately $200,000.

The next regular Board meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. on April 17 in the Board Conference Room.

IS THE MARVEL HYPE TRAIN RUNNING OUT OF STEAM? Kurt Larson the advocate Another week, another Marvel movie, or at least that’s how it feels.

With a whopping 21 films in the main “Avengers” cinematic canon already, not to mention all the Marvel properties that were previously held by Fox, such as the X-Men, it’s no wonder so many people are starting to get burned out on the superhero genre.

So, with all the previous inconsequential controversy surrounding “Captain Marvel,” and the stale formula of Disney’s superhero films becoming ever more obvious, you may be wondering if it’s really worth leaving the house to see this latest

Marvel superhero flick.

Captain Marvel introduces the latest member of the Avengers: Our heroine, Carol Danvers (played by Brie Larson), is an earthling turned honorary Kree alien, who was discovered in a freak accident that gave her extraordinary powers.

Now suffering from extreme amnesia, Carol fights for the Kree against Skroll terrorists, a race of shape-changing aliens who seek independence. When a mission takes her back to Earth, however, she learns there might be more to her mysterious past and the people she fights for than she could have imagined.

Captain Marvel puts itself in a weird position, as the movie retroactively makes Danvers one of the most important characters in the Avengers canon. Previously, Captain Marvel had only been

minimally hinted at in the other Avengers movies, and introducing a new, big player in the franchise with an origin-story film this late in the series – especially with the release of “Avengers: End Game” only a few months away – really comes across as too little, too late.

For all the hype and arguing that went on over this movie’s “feminist agenda” – all of the trolling and unnecessary support that was given to this movie – it all just ended up being more money in Disney’s pocket. Despite this film’s rather mediocre critical reception, it has still been a massive box office success.

But, money in the bank does not excuse poor quality.

Truth be told, this movie is enjoyable enough if you turn your brain off, but then again, most anything can be considered

passable if you turn your brain off.

The issues begin with the film’s directors. There are two of them, first of all: Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck. Generally speaking, having two different directors who aren’t used to working together, with two separate visions for the movie they’re working on, just won’t turn out a cohesive product.

That sentiment has unfortunately proven true once more, with Captain Marvel.

All of the pieces seem to be present in order for a fun story to be told, but it all just feels a little stilted and uninspired. In some scenes Larson is fun and snarky, especially when interacting with a young Nick Fury (played by Samuel L. Jackson, of course), and it’s fun to see their relationship grow. In other scenes, however, she comes across as flat and annoyed.

The flow of the editing is also completely off. The way this film was structured, there simply isn’t much payoff or character development for any of the main cast except Fury.

Overall, this movie simply lacks the flair and sense of adventure that audiences have come to expect from a Marvel film.

In fact, I’m less excited to see Captain Marvel’s appearance in End Game than I was before, because this movie offers nothing more than cheesy-looking special effects and a very on-the-nose soundtrack.

If you really want to know all of the lore and backstory behind the newest Avenger before you watch End Game, then go see Captain Marvel. More than likely, the character’s appearance in the final Avengers won’t be jarring enough to warrant going out and watching this movie, however.

Riverview Café has extended its hours, and is now open from 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekdays.

The café (in the Vista Dining Room) has also added new items to the breakfast menu, and a happy hour menu, available from 4 to 6 p.m.

Steve Curtis, kitchen manager and chef of Riverview on campus, explained plans to keep the longer hours through the end of Spring Term, but also the need to reach a revenue target of $400 during the extended late afternoon hours, 2 to 6 p.m. The café will soon display new signage to reflect the recent changes.

Curtis has been managing Riverview since September 2018, and has several ideas to modify how the café is run in the future. His next goal is to assess how it can improve food quality.

One way to achieve this is by providing made-to-order items during breakfast, as compared to grab-and-go items.

The expanded breakfast menu includes made-toorder breakfast sandwiches,

pancakes, french toast with fruit, omelettes, biscuits and gravy, and chicken and waffles. Sides are also available and the items mentioned will be available every day as opposed to being one-day specials. Breakfast is available from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m.

The other new addition is a Happy Hour menu. Items now offered include mozzarella sticks with marinara ($4), deluxe nachos ($4), wings with choice of sauce ($5) and churros ($1 each).

Due to the extended hours, Riverview is in need of new staff.

Anyone interested in applying can pick up an application from the cashier in the café.

Several positions are available, mainly cashiering; p ote nt i a l ly, additional cooks; and a backup barista at Riverview Barista in the St. Helens room.

Fleeger also showed off a shared office space that is typically full of volunteers and hosts preparing and researching for their shows.

Fleeger explained that, along with the physical renovations, OPB is, ahead of its 100-year anniversary in 2022, updating its digital infrastructure to a new media asset management system which will allow people to research its archives more easily.

The three core staff members of KMHD are Fleeger, and hosts and producers Isabel Zacharias and Derek Smith. In many of their emails to the MHCC board, listeners and community members gave high praise and respect to the three for their work at KMHD. In terms of student opportunities, currently, there’s a general internship for KMHD posted online. Fleeger has interns shadow someone in each

temporarily hire 30-50 people.

What’s more, there are currently written survey sheets available in the café. Curtis asks those customers filling out the survey to be specific in items they would like to see available.

Throughout the year the café has tried new food items that sometimes do not sell quickly.

“I hate to throw away food,” Curtis said. However, if the food is still good (reusable), the café tries to donate excess items to Barney’s Pantry in the Student Union. “We try to send as much as we can down to the students,” he said.

element of the station, and then after they’re done shadowing, a project is created for them, based on their interests. As for the three-year education minimum listed on the website for this internship position (a qualification few students in Mt. Hood’s two-year broadcast program can meet), Fleeger said it’s not a “complete” requirement so much as a preference when narrowing down internship applicants.

Bass said that while for some internships the three-year minimum is more important, for others the rule doesn’t have to be as strict. He added that there are opportunities at OPB for students in multimedia programs, photo, video, graphic design, and web design.

Looking ahead, even with a more solid path forward with KMHD remaining at OPB for at least the next five years, the college still needs to make some hard decisions. Mt. Hood must

address the reality that KMHD’s 20 year old transmitter needs to be replaced, and the lease where the transmitter is located expires on Feb. 28, 2020. There’s also no current backup transmitter for KMHD. Jennifer DeMent, budget director, said that while the transmitter isn’t specifically included in the proposed budget for 2019-20, the college is currently working on a funding strategy for these expenses.

Skari said the KMHD committee is working on finalizing a list of requests for discussion, and she asked Associated Student Government leaders Bob Hansen and Melanie Roberts for input, as well. Based on feedback from those two sources, she will see what’s already in the agreement and what items are new to determine a negotiation timeline, moving forward.

he 2019 NCAA Division I men’s basketball championship tournament is reaching its climax. After a long season, 64 spots (plus another four “play-in” spots) are earned in the tournament, for a chance to compete for the trophy.

There are then five rounds to get to the championship game, which comes on Monday night.

There have been a lot of ups and downs during this March Madness season. If you filled out a betting bracket before this tournament started, it’s most likely busted by now – unless you have No. 1 seed Virginia, No. 5 Auburn, No. 3 Texas Tech or No. 2 Michigan State winning it all. There’s only one No. 1 seed left to make it to the Final Four. Teams that were predicted to win it all, such as Duke, Gonzaga or North Carolina, have already had their season ended.

During the opening round there were 12 “upsets” out of 32 games (if one trusts the seeding). Most of the upsets weren’t even close games, however. The first round just shows that no matter what seed you are in going into the tournament, as long as you play your best with what you have, you can win and advance.

Heading toward the Sweet 16, there were only two upsets, which were No. 12 Oregon beating No. 13 UC Irvine, which had upset No. 4 Kansas State in the first round.

This game had its ups and downs for both teams. Oregon was dominating this game in the first half, but going into the second half UC Irvine played great defense, leaving Oregon scoreless for the first five minutes. The Anteaters erased a 12-point deficit, but the Ducks remained calm and worked more

on their own defense, until their offense started flowing. Oregon started scoring and UC Irvine ran out of gas from the comeback run they had, and had trouble scoring the rest of the way, and Oregon won, 73-54.

The second upset came when No. 5 Auburn outplayed No. 4 Kansas, and had a 26-point lead in the first half. Kansas tried to fight back, but Auburn just kept answering, taking advantage of turnovers and hitting open shots and winning, 8975.

Also in the round of 16, No. 1 seed Duke was barely able to survive No. 4 Virginia Tech. The entire game it seemed that Virginia Tech had a chance for the upset, but their 7-foot, 6-inch center, Tacko Fall, fouled out before the end of the regulation. Duke was able to gut it out and defended until a last-second tip-in try and held on, 75-73.

To make it into the Final Four, No. 1 seed Virginia had to get past No. 3 Purdue last weekend. Purdue opened with plenty of offense, but Virginia locked down on defense, cutting the lead to one point at the half. Virginia started the second half where it left off, hitting open shots and taking advantage of turnovers, but the game was close throughout. Each team was locking down on both ends of the floor.

With less than 5 seconds on the clock and Purdue holding a two-point lead, Virginia missed a free throw that bounced far from the rim. But Virginia was able to secure the offensive rebound and make a buzzer-beating shot and tie the game at 70.

Guy put Virginia ahead by three points with 5.6 seconds left. With a chance to tie, Purdue inbounded the ball, but their star Carsen Edwards was not able to corral the ball and the turnover with just 1.8 seconds left sealed the 80-75 victory for Virginia.

State slugged it out until the final seconds. Early on, it looked like Michigan State had the game under control until Duke started hitting shots and was able to cut the lead to four points heading to the second half. Michigan State started the second half with a dunk and seemed to be in control, again, but Duke was able to regain the lead with 13 minutes left in the game.

It stayed close until the end. With five seconds left, Michigan State was ahead with two points. Duke had a chance to tie the game, with R.J. Barrett shooting two free throws, but he

missed the first one. Barrett intended to miss the second free throw (just like Virginia had), but it dropped in after a high bounce, instead. Michigan State was then able to inbound the ball and secure the dramatic win, 68-67.

The Final Four semi-finals are set to be televised this Saturday, April 6, on CBS TV at 3 p.m. Pacific time. It’s Auburn vs. Virginia, followed by Texas Tech vs. Michigan State.

The two winners will meet for the championship at 6 p.m. Pacific time on Monday, April 8, also on CBS.
