ProPeas and New Year’s Resolutions By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

According to a 2017 survey, the top three New Year’s resolutions globally for 2018 were eating healthier, getting more exercise and saving more money! In the USA, the 3 top resolutions for 2019 were exercise to get in shape, diet to lose weight and to save money! So as you can see, dieting to lose weight and getting in shape are areas in which most people wish they could improve. Unfortunately, many people will announce their New Year’s Resolution without so much as a basic plan in order to achieve this goal. They don’t set out a framework to enable this to occur, there is not basic change in daily life schedules and few ask for help. So they literally set themselves up for failure! So if improving diet is one of YOUR goals for the new decade, what changes can you make to help you achieve this? Firstly and most importantly, set a REALISTIC target! If you are 10 kilograms overweight, then allow 5-8 months to lose it! There are nutritional programs available that do promise quicker weight loss, but be careful as many of them are nutritionally inadequate and give you false hope. They can also cost a fortune so the second New Year’s resolution (to save money) may also be thwarted! Secondly, get yourself a MENTOR. Losing weight may be SIMPLE but it’s NOT EASY! There are several stumbling blocks along the way, some you will anticipate and some 4

will catch you by surprise, but ALL of them can tip you off the bandwagon and you’ve lost the battle even before you start! Partner up with a friend, family member or work colleague to facilitate the process. You are then accountable to him/her and he or she to you! It really does work better. As they say, a problem shared is a problem halved.

How does protein help to lose weight? Protein is one of the essential macronutrients and most of us acknowledge how important it is in daily nutrition. However, the current trend is to cut out animal foods as much as possible and replace them with plantbased foods. As holistic and natural as this sounds, simply cutting out meat and dairy doesn’t always bring the health euphoria it promises and in fact, it may create more problems than it cures! I’m certainly NOT saying vegetarianism is unhealthy, but in order to make sure the nutrient content of the diet is adequate, you have to pay attention to all the macronutrients, those being proteins, carbohydrates and fats as well as the micronutrients, vitamins, minerals and trace elements.

CELL FOOD

Eating protein-rich foods on a weight-loss diet has many benefits. The most important one is that protein makes you feel full, so you are not tempted to break your diet due to irrepressible hunger pangs. As my daughter once said to me when I remarked that she was ‘irritable’, she said she was HANGRY (angry because she was hungry)! A diet that has sufficient protein will also help to build up muscle, especially if combined with resistance exercise. Increasing your muscle percentage also helps to stay lean as muscle tissue has a higher metabolic rate than fat tissue so ultimately you will manage to keep the weight off more successfully if you have a leaner and more muscular body. Proteins can also influence the messages your hormones relate to the brain signalling hunger or satiety. Removing sugars, other excess carbohydrate-rich foods such as bread, pasta and baked products as well as bad fats like fried foods, visible fat on meat, fast foods and snacks such as chips and fatty biltong, and replacing them with lots of leafy vegetables and lean proteins, can increase the level of appetite-reducing hormones (satiety hormones) such as leptin and reduce the levels of the hunger stimulating hormones like ghrelin. Protein digestion also requires more energy than do carbohydrates and fats, so ensuring you have adequate protein in the diet will enhance your energy output and thereby also contribute to weight loss. This is called the thermic effect of foods. Protein digestion has a 20 - 30% thermic effect, as opposed to carbohydrates which have a thermic effect of 5-10% and fats have a thermic effect of 0-3%.

• • • • • •

Turkey breast Fish – all types Legumes – lentils, chickpeas, dried beans Eggs Low fat cottage cheese Raw nuts and seeds

ProPeas and Weight Loss This superb food supplement can really help with keeping protein levels in the diet adequate without adding all the disadvantages of increasing animal protein foods. ProPeas is completely vegan and yet provides high biologically available amino acids to adequately support a healthy diet. It also includes all the branch chain amino acids, which protect against muscle loss and aid in fat metabolism. Propeas has been proven to have an alkaline effect on the body, unlike many other protein-rich foods, which are highly acidic.

Conclusion Remember that weighing yourself daily is not necessary or desirable. Weight fluctuates all the time, depending on hydration, whether it is hot or cold, whether you have just eaten or not, etc. It is far better to weigh once a week only at the same time of the day on the same day each week. Also take measurements only once a week and use these as a benchmark rather than weight. You must include exercise on a daily basis and never forget the positive effects from taking time to de-stress, breathe fresh air and relax!

The following foods are all rich in protein and lean in ‘bad’ fats and should form an integral part of a weight loss diet: • Lean meat • Chicken (without the skin) nutrition that works / www.theaimcompanies.com

Cellular Pollution One of the side effects of living in modern society is exposure to environmental pollutants. Just think about one of the many great inventions of the of the 19th century: gasoline-powered automobiles. Almost 150 years since the first car engine was started, the collective exhaust of vehicles worldwide is continuously pumped into the air we breathe. The fumes from car exhaust contain poisonous chemicals, such as benzene, carbon monoxide, formaldehyde and soot. Take a Deep Breath What happens when we breathe in environmental toxins? Respiratory illnesses, nervous system disruptions and metabolic disorders are some of the health problems that can develop. Negative effects can even begin before birth. A study published in Jama Pediatrics (Dec. 2017) revealed that mothers exposed to PM2.5 pollution during pregnancy gave birth to children with significantly lower telomere length.1 These newborns were already aging faster as a result of pollution. At the cellular level, pollution can affect us all, right down to the mitochondria: the energy centers of our cells. Mitochondrial toxicity has been a known threat to our health for decades.2 The toxic effects of pollutants have increased over the years, leading to mitochondria diseases that affect 1 in 4,300 people.3

The Need for Detoxification With a wide variety of AIM products providing cleansing nutrients and herbs, Members have ways to detoxify at the cellular level by taking products such as BarleyLife and Herbal Fiberblend. 6

Detoxification of the cell environment is one of the five avenues of The Healthy Cell Concept. And Kim Shallcross, NMD, DC, TCM, is an AIM Director who firmly believes in addressing the effects of cellular pollution. With over 30 years of experience, Kim helps her patients to reverse the effects of environmental toxins at Shallcross Lifestyle Consulting in Thornbury, Ontario. Most of her patients take Peak Endurance. “Every day we’re getting bombarded by environmental toxins that damage the ATP cycle, energy production that takes place in the mitochondria of our cells,” Kim explained. “The supplemental ATP in Peak Endurance can help to repair this.” Many health issues are related to ATP production in the cells, and Peak Endurance may help to reverse any imbalance. “I think Peak Endurance is a fantastic product. It is extremely important in today’s world to lessen mitochondrial damage caused by toxins in the environment,” Kim affirmed. “I’ve been taking Peak Endurance for many years, and it works.”

CELL PROTECTION

Locked Loaded and

It is one of the most effective armies ever constructed. Fortunately for all of us, it wins more battles than it loses. It has no general and knows no geographic borders. Welcome to your immune system, your body’s natural defense that relentlessly battles infections, bacteria, parasites and any virus identified as a threat to normal healthy tissue. The primary immune system defenders include: 1. Tonsils and Thymus: both produce antibodies that fight infections 2. Lymphatic System: traps bacteria, viruses and other foreign substances, which are then destroyed by white blood cells called lymphocytes 3. Bone Marrow: the primary site of new blood cell production 4. Spleen: filters compromised blood cells, destroying bacteria and other harmful blood-borne substances 5. White Blood Cells: attackers that attempt to obliterate harmful bacteria, viruses and other disease-causing organisms

A strong, healthy immune system identifies and eliminates germs and other invaders that have no business being in your body. In contrast, a compromised immune system opens the door to health problems, allowing infectious agents to flourish and cause major illnesses, along with annoying maladies such as colds or the flu. Even though the immune system is built to defend and does an incredible job of protecting you, healthy lifestyle choices can help to maintain its effectiveness; for example, not smoking, regular exercise, sufficient sleep, wholesome nutrition and AIM’s highquality health products. AIM’s whole-food concentrates and targeted nutrition provide supplemental support that can assist the immune system’s army in its constant battle against germ warfare.

PERSONAL PRODUCTIVITY

It’s not just about financial rewards either. Like the majority of AIM Members, Chairman’s Club Director, CEO and founder of Chrysalis Networx, Joan van Rensburg never intended to start a business.

Transforming a home-based business into a successful enterprise requires a reasonable amount of time and focused effort. To help sustain and direct that focus, Chrysalis Networx provides an AIM directed training platform that gives you a solid foundation for your organization’s transformation. Whether or not you have signed on to Chrysalis, make it a New Year’s resolution to get fully on board the Chrysalis platform. A wealth of training and expertise is available to help you launch your business to new heights.

“The main reason I signed up as an AIM Member was to get the products at the wholesale price,” Joan acknowledged. “Unbeknownst to me, it grew into a big business, and I didn’t realize it at that time because I was just sharing my story with friends and family. And it’s so rewarding to be involved in a business where you are changing people’s lives, where you’re improving their quality of life and making a difference.” Being on the Chrysalis Networx platform keeps you connected to Joan and other successful business leaders who have made a difference. Nutrition

The role of in recovery from bone injury By Charlotte Meschede - Nutritionist

Breaking or fracturing a bone is a traumatic event and frequently has long lasting consequences. Whether it is your 5 year old child who has fallen off the jungle gym or an older member of the family that has had a broken bone, nutrition can affect the healing and recovery of broken bones. For many years, the only two nutrients that were thought to play a part in healing of fractures were vitamin D and calcium. However, it has emerged through clinical trials, research papers and anecdotal evidence, that MANY nutrients are involved in the bone re-structure and healing process. These are:

• • • • • •

Protein Calcium Vitamin D Iron Vitamin K Vitamin B12

Protein The skeleton is an important reservoir of minerals for the body. It is made up of 70% mineral, 20% collagen (protein) and 8% water and 2% of non-collagenous protein. Approximately 99% of the body’s calcium is contained in bone, as well as a high proportion of other minerals such as magnesium, phosphate and sodium. Think of protein as providing the steel structure of a basic skeleton. Without bone there is no strength and there is no internal structure on which to build. We all know the good sources of protein: meat, eggs, chicken, fish (especially fatty fish), dairy foods, nuts, seeds 14

Jan - Feb 2020 / to order call 011-675-0477

and legumes. Depending on age, individuals will have different protein requirements. Babies and young children, still growing and developing, have a higher demand of protein per kilogram body weight than do adults, so it is important that these needs are adequately met. However, eating a very high proportion of protein (high-protein diet) to the rest of the macronutrients (carbohydrates and fats), may adversely affect bones, as too much protein on a daily basis will cause bones to leach calcium into the blood. The same is true if the protein intake is too low.

Calcium Calcium binds with specific proteins in bone to provide the strength and integrity. Without these proteins, calcium cannot be absorbed and optimal bone density cannot be achieved. In essence there is a codependence between these proteins and calcium in order to preserve bone health and especially after fracture or trauma to the bone. Rich sources of calcium include: dairy products, dark green leafy vegetables, fatty fish (especially if ingested with the bones like canned salmon) and some legumes such as soy beans and tofu as well as seeds and seed products like tahini. Most clinicians will advise of a daily calcium intake of 800

CELL FOOD

mg per day, with this amount increasing to 1000 – 1200 mg per day for pregnancy and breastfeeding. If an individual has broken or fractured a bone, then calcium intake should be increased to at least 1000mg per day until full recovery is achieved.

Vitamin D Vitamin D is needed for calcium to be absorbed into bone and is also essential for bone healing. Therefore this is the MOST crucial nutrient when it comes to healing of a fractured bone. It has also been proven that adequate intake of both calcium and vitamin D in later life helps to PREVENT fractures and plays an important role in the progression of osteoporosis.

Iron Research has shown that clinical iron deficiency anaemia can not only prevent bone formation but also prevents bone resorption. Iron is a major cofactor in the formation of the most significant bone protein which is collagen. If collagen cannot be synthesized, then bones become more porous and more fragile, creating a vulnerability for future fractures. Foods that are naturally rich in iron include red meat (especially beef ), dark meat in poultry, eggs, liver as well as dark green leafy vegetables, tuna, salmon as well as legumes and dried fruit (apricots, dates, prunes and raisins).

Vitamin K Vitamin K is essential for bone metabolism. Both vitamin D and vitamin K are fat soluble, meaning that if supplements for foods containing an abundance of either of these two vitamins are not taken in the presence of fat (i.e. with food that contains some fat), they will not be absorbed. Food sources rich in vitamin K include beef liver, broccoli, spinach, kale, cabbage, asparagus and dark green lettuce. There are several individuals on Warfarin, aspirin or other blood thinning agents and these people will be at risk of vitamin K deficiency as most practitioners will advise them to avoid vitamin K-rich foods in order to help prevent blood clots. However, this is not necessary and they can eat small and regular amounts of these foods providing the amount taken every day remains constant. If anyone has an issue in this regard, they should contact their health care professional for more advice as they will be at risk of creating a vitamin K deficiency and this will adversely affect bone health.

Vitamin B12 A deficiency of vitamin B12 will affect several metabolic processes and in particular iron absorption and nervous system damage. However, studies have also shown that vitamin B12 deficiency can lead to bone loss in old age causing osteoporosis. Adults with a clinical deficiency of vitamin B12 have a much lower bone density which will contribute to the risk of osteoporosis.

CELL FOOD

Glucosamine No article on bone health would be complete if management of joint disease and inflammation is not addressed. Where there is bone trauma, there is inevitably inflammation and/or damage to joints. Glucosamine has been researched extensively and definitely does aid the regeneration and rehabilitation of cartilage and tendons. If a bone is injured in any way, the accompanying inflammation will have a negative effect on the joints of the bone as well.

Other factors that can negatively affect bone health There are other compounds and factors that can negatively influence bone healing are also extremely important as following a so-called healthy diet may fail in the face of excess alcohol intake, smoking, eating too much salt, excessive caffeine intake, not enough exercise and hormonal imbalance. As mentioned above, the amount of protein in an individual’s diet is extremely important – too little or too much will cause leaching of calcium into the blood and a consequent weakening of the bone tissue itself.

AIM PRODUCTS AND BONES The first and most significant one in the AIM inventory is CalciAIM. In my opinion most over the counter and prescription supplements contain too much calcium and not enough of the supporting nutrients, which enhance calcium

16

Jan - Feb 2020 / to order call 011-675-0477

absorption. CalciAIM has a unique blend of bio-available calcium together with all the supporting nutrients, including VITAMIN D, in a synergistic ratio. I have had great success in helping my patients achieve optimal bone healing and an improved bone density with this product. Frame Essentials contains a glucosamine complex that will help normalise joint pain and inflammation. A necessary additive to the arsenal of supplements that will improve bone healing. ProPeas will help a person ensure that he/she is taking in enough protein. Especially with the trend to eat a more vegetarian-based diet, protein requirements may not be met in some individuals, particularly in times of trauma such as fracture.

BarleyLife. As we all know, BarleyLife is produced from green leafy vegetables that is high in antioxidants, active enzymes and VITAMIN K. this magic supplement should not be left out when treating a person with broken bones. In conclusion, there is NO question that nutrition plays a role in bone rehabilitation. Even minute deficiencies of basic nutrients can delay the healing process. Ultimately, if quality of life is the goal, then look to diet and lifestyle to achieve optimal results.

Beat the summer

Heat

The heat is on! As temperatures rise, energy levels lower for most people. But hey! It’s summertime. You get to spend more time being physically active outdoors. At the same time, the heat makes you sweat, so you need to replenish with water to avoid dehydration. Perspiring also makes you lose electrolytes. These electrically charged minerals not only play an active role in nerve, muscle, heart and brain activity but in moving nutrients in and waste out of your cells. Electrolytes also maintain the balance of water in your body, so you need more than H2O to replenish them as well. But knocking back sugary energy drinks is not the way to go.

Greens from BarleyLife, BarleyLife Xtra and LeafGreens are jam-packed with revitalizing plant nutrition. CoCoa LeafGreens adds a chocolaty cocoa-bean boost of flavour and nourishment. Splashes of colour from orange Just Carrots and red RediBeets up the smoothie intake of vegetable nutrients even more. For natural help in rising above the summer heat, turn to AIM.

Replenish with Peak Endurance AIM packs a lot of replenishing power in blueberry-açai-flavoured Peak Endurance. By adding this powder to water, six major electrolytes are activated: sodium, calcium, potassium, chloride, phosphate and magnesium. Along with vitamin C, Peak Endurance also gives you six B vitamins, which are involved in cellular energy production. What’s more, each serving of Peak Endurance “powder power” delivers 200 mg of ATP, short for adenosine triphosphate. ATP is the molecular source of energy in your body, so Peak Endurance helps to replenish your energy levels in the summer heat.

Antibiotics have a detrimental effect on the microbiome, destroying good bacteria along with those that cause infections. Many people take antibiotics for a cold or the flu, but both illnesses are caused by viruses that antibiotics cannot kill. Studies indicate long-lasting disruption of the microbiome even from short-term antibiotic use. Childhood exposure to antibiotics impacts microbiome development and can result in the onset of illnesses through adulthood.

Exercise improves the microbiome of mice and men . . . and women. In studies that monitored mice, six weeks of voluntary wheel running created positive changes in mice microbiota. On a human level, a study showed that exercise altered the composition and metabolic capacity of gut microbiota. In these human and animal studies, exercise stimulated bacteria that produce butyrate, a short chain fatty acid that reduces inflammation and supports gut health.

The microbiome’s connection to mental health is controversial primarily because most of the research has been done on animals. However, one study revealed that people with a variety of psychological issues had similar gut microbiota profiles. It is known that gut bacteria are involved in producing the brain’s chemical messengers, neurotransmitters that include mood-influencing dopamine and seratonin, so a bacteria deficiency or lack of diversity may negatively impact mental health. bit.ly/Smithsonian-Bacteria----Depression bit.ly/Bacteria_Depression

AIM nutrition supports a healthy microbiome with a variety of wholefood powders and targeted health supplements. FloraFood and fit ’n fiber are particularly beneficial for the microbiome. Repopulating the gut with FloraFood’s three species of probiotics–3 billion live cells per capsule—gives the microbiome an influx of friendly bacteria. The prebiotic fiber in fit ’n fiber feeds the good bacteria in the microbiota community.

A Word about

Nutrients Some words do not require a definition. You sort of know the meaning without having to check a dictionary. One of those words is nutrient, and it’s something you just know is good for you. By consuming a healthy and balanced diet, you ingest nutrients that provide nutrition for your body. Two of the most common words in the AIM product catalog are nutrients and nutrition. All AIM whole-food concentrates provide nourishment in keeping with AIM’s Healthy Cell Concept. Food is the first avenue of the Healthy Cell Concept, providing a common-sense explanation: Our cells need the nutrients from fresh, whole foods as well as high-quality nutritional supplements. Consistent nutrition for your body can improve pH, prevent inflammation and support the immune system.

Nutrient Breakdown •

Nutrients are classified into six categories: carbohydrates, fats, vitamins, minerals, protein and water. Nutrients are also sub-grouped into two broad classifications, macronutrients and micronutrients. Macronutrients are energy producers that you need in large amounts: carbohydrates, proteins and fats. They provide the fuel your body needs to function. Micronutrients are consumed in small amounts and include vitamins and minerals. Water is in a nutrient category of its own.

Nutrients are important for three reasons:

1 2 3

Carbohydrates, fats and proteins supply the energy required for the multitude of chemical reactions involved in proper functioning of the body. Energy is measured in calories, and fats have more than either carbohydrates or protein. By comparison, one gram of fat has nine calories, whereas each gram of carbohydrates and protein contains only four calories. Minerals, fats and protein are the foundational blocks for building, maintaining and replenishing bones, teeth, organs and tissues. Carbohydrates are broken down by the body into glucose, which provides a source of energy. Excess glucose can end up as fat stored in adipose tissue. All six nutrient categories play a role in regulating body functions that include sweating, temperature regulation, metabolism, blood pressure and thyroid function. Homeostasis is the desired outcome, when all the different functions of the body fueled by nutrients are in balance. nutrition that works / www.theaimcompanies.com

Digestive Health is your By Ananda Russ - Royal Emerald Director

AIM

When I was diagnosed with a digstive issue way back in 1983, in those days digestive issues were foreign and weird. These days it seems that we all know someone who has some kind of digestive disorders.

My story is that I was on very heavy medication for about 13 years, too many to recount and the experiences whilst on these were rather traumatic, so I prefer not to dwell on it. I would rather focus on how and when I got better. I was told I would be on medication for the rest of my life and I had to make peace with the fact that going to the toilet 28 times a day was going to be fairly normal for me. And for years I suffered, no other words to describe it. In 1998 I was introduced to the AIM Companies and Renewed Balance Cream. No sooner had I started on the product, when one of my downline members told me about Herbal Fiberblend. She had bought Theresa Schumacher’s book

“Cleansing the Body and the Colon for a Happier and Healthier You using Herbal Fiberblend” and told me that I had to read it immediately - I borrowed it as I did not have enough money to buy it. Oh my goodness, little did I know that my health and life would make an about turn for the 20

better! I read the book about 3 times, in my heart I was convinced that this product would be a key in getting me better - and so it was.

My first taste of Herbal Fiberblend was in room temperature water! - and still I decided to take it, so you must know how desperate I was to get better (no capsules in those days)! I immediately took the cleansing dosage for about 4 months, I could not believe how much better I was feeling. My bowel movements used to fluctuate between constipation or diarrhoea, and for the first time virtually in my life I had softly

formed stools two to three times a day. It honestly changed my life. The next product I added to my daily routine was BarleyGreen, now BarleyLife. I found that I had more energy, the first winter passed without any sniffles or flu, and no infections of any sort - bargain! Enough said. After being on the “green train” and the “tummy mud train” for a couple of months, I introduced Florafood to my daily routine. I am sensitive to certain foods (trial and error got me there), and I would often struggle with a bloated feeling for no apparent reason. Well, as soon as I started feeling uncomfortable, I would take a Florafood and within about half an hour, the bloatedness would be gone. I take it each and every day, as it helps restore the flora in the gut as well as assist my body in making some Vit B12. It is a wonderful food for your gut, so you can’t overindulge on Florafood!

I tested Composure, as I tend to be a bit of a stress-bunny. Well, I want to shout hallelujah!, because it has stood the test of life’s stresses and disasters. I cannot urge you enough to add it daily to your routine - it is a handbreak for when you feel overwhelmed and stressed out. I love the fact that it helps to feed the adrenal glands, those little guys that get hammered when you are chronically stressed.

The next product that had a wonderful impact for me, was Prepzymes. I saw the demonstration of dry, hard, sticky oats being mixed with just one opened capsule of Prepzymes, and within 20 minutes that goo was liquid. I read up on enzymes and realised the importance of replenishing enzymes that has been destroyed through the cooking methods that we use. I take one to two Prepzymes with every meal, and I have no heavy feeling afterwards. Prepzymes has 7 different enzymes in its composition. It is active in both acidic and alkaline environments.

The last product that I want to share with you regarding digestive wellness, is Herbal Release. It is a product developed as a natural support for the lymphatic system. I exercise daily, I am very active, I eat healthily yet I have a slow lymphatic system. And Herbal Release is a great helper for me. The herbs in Herbal Release works synergistically with each other, helping the bile flow, aids in the immune system & cleanses the lymphatic system. I take Herbal Release every day, and am so grateful that I can assist my body in getting & staying healthy. It has been an experience & journey that I would not change for the world. I have been symptom free for over 20 years now - I am grateful to AIM for making these terrific products. Keep sharing! - you will change someone’s life!
